Jubilee Street Party A fantastic community Street Party is being organised for the village to take place on Monday 4 June 2012 (Spring Bank Holiday) from 1.00pm - 4.00pm on and around the village green.

This is one event, commemorating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, that you definitely don’t want to miss and will be your opportunity to dress up in 50’s gear and have some fun and games.

Nettleham Weather Reports Lee Barker, a resident of the village, has kept us informed of our village weather statistics with his regular meteorological reports, which have appeared in the magazine now for a number of years.

Lee has decided to take a break from this task for a while, so the Nettleham Weather Autumn 2011 report on page 72 of this edition will be the final one in the present series.

I would like to sincerely thank Lee for his regular contribution to Nettleham News over the years.

The Bishops’ Palace site The front cover photograph of this edition features the Bishops’ Palace field and inside on pages 34 - 41 you will find a number of articles about this important heritage site in the village.

In 2007 during the creation of the Parish Plan, when residents of the village were asked what changes they would like to see in Nettleham in the future, the public consultation revealed that many people thought that although the Bishops’ Palace site was acknowledged as an extremely important national historic asset, it continued to remain a neglected and largely unnoticed central feature of the village, which should be improved and developed for the benefit of the community.

A recent successful application for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled us to now move forward in this endeavour and develop the site to make it a credit to the village and an attractive amenity for a wide range of people to enjoy.

It is anticipated that additional funding may be secured from other sources to assist with the improvements and a photographic survey of the field has been completed to record the current status of the site and assist in planning new developments for the future.

In addition to creating an attractive leisure amenity, it will provide an important educational facility for local schools and others with an interest in local history.

It is hoped that residents will want to become involved in this exciting new venture and anyone who may be interested in contributing in any way to the general effort would be most welcome.

Our Colin is 65!

Yes, your favourite bus driver, Colin Dallas, will reach the grand old age of 65 on Monday 30 April this year and on pages 32/33 of this edition of Nettleham News he tells of his life and times behind the steering wheel.

Everyone in Nettleham knows Colin and I’m sure they will join me in wishing him ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day’. But don’t worry - he’s not leaving quite yet!

New Contributors On page 69 of this edition, there are three short pieces on different themes by Janet Lazell, an aspiring writer from North Hykeham and on page 63 is also a short story by Harry Carter.

Parish Council News News from the Parish Council As we anticipate the new shoots of spring, which are hopefully just around the corner and we are getting ready to put away our winter garments, the Parish Council quarterly news appears once more - totally unaffected by weather or climate.

Winter, Roads and Paths At the time of writing this report (31 January 2012) the winter has in fact been kinder than we might have hoped, although with February still before us, we remain ready for wintery conditions. The Parish Council has established a small volunteer network to assist with pavement salting and path clearing and has a small stock of salt for this purpose. In addition arrangements were made with the County Council for a quantity of salt to be made available if necessary.

Play areas Following the destruction, in high winds, of part of the fencing at the Larch Avenue play area, residents will have seen that we have had a new metal fence erected. This was funded from part of the money endowed to the Council by the original developers of the estate.

It is likely that this spring we will be installing replacement matting under the play equipment at Bill Bailey’s Field in order to overcome the problems caused by the rubber tiles developing cracks, as we did at Larch Avenue last year.

The Bishops Palace Site A 14-year lease has now been signed between the Church Commissioners and the Parish Council. Cllr John Evans is leading a small group of interested individuals and organisations and a plan is being developed which it is hoped will enable the site to be opened up for public access, along with some tidying up and eventual provision of interpretation boards.

regarding this matter and can be seen on pages 36/37.

The Village Hall The new village hall roof contract was finally concluded in November and reports from users have been very favourable.

Small Parish Council Grants The Council has been pleased to approve three grants under the Council’s scheme. These were to the Stepping Stones children’s playgroup, to help with the construction of a vegetable garden, to the Nettleham Cricket Club, towards a new digital scoring system and Nettleham LIVES, towards the costs of meetings and training sessions.

Flyposting and Noticeboards The Parish Council have established a working group tasked with developing a policy with regard to advertising in our village. It is reviewing the use, location and size of official notice boards, flyposting and the

appropriateness of advertising associated with shops and other commercial activities. We will be consulting with interested parties.

Trees in the Village The annual winter maintenance work has now been completed and unfortunately it had to include the replacement of some vandalised hazel, planted last year in Green Lane.

We have enhanced the environmental planting in the amenity area on the north side of Washdyke Lane and in the Old Quarry.

Residents may have noticed that two willow trees by the Beck in Watermill Lane have been showing signs of distress. The trees are over 35 years old and the taller tree is slowly dying from the top downwards. Both have been shedding increasing amounts of debris.

After consultation with tree surgeons and WLDC it has been decided to fell the trees and replace them with more suitable specimens, eg small-fruited crab apple or native thorn trees. One of the key factors noted by the Village Plan Survey was the appreciation of villagers of our green environment certainly the birds value it!

Skate Park Steering Group The inaugural meeting of the Skatepark Working Group has now been held. With representatives including local residents, Parish Councillors and Sudbrooke Parish Council, the group is being chaired by Cllr Joe Siddall. The group are currently looking at the most suitable location, drawing up some draft designs for a skate Park and potential costings.

The Group will now be consulting with Groundwork Lincolnshire regarding possible funding and planning requirements for a skate park.

Parish Council News continued from page 5

Parish Precept for 2012/13 At the Parish Council’s Budget Meeting (1 November 2011), the Clerk submitted a proposed budget for 2012/13 with a zero increase on the Parish Precept (£111,886). However, during the course of the meeting, the allocation identified for the production of a Neighbourhood Plan was felt to be insufficient for the successful completion of this document. It was resolved that the Neighbourhood Plan allocation be increased by £3,000 which resulted in an increase in the Parish Precept to £114,886. This equates in real terms to an increase of £1.90 per household per year or 4 pence per week based on 1,570 houses in the Parish.

The Localism Act makes provision for a Parish Council to produce a Neighbourhood Plan; this Plan would put the parish in a strong position in relation to any future development and would enable the Parish to have a greater say in the type, siting and style of any future potential developments.

An article relating to the creation of the Neighbourhood Plan can been found on page 11 of this edition of our village magazine.

Parking on the Village Green At the time of writing discussions are under way (imminent) with Lincolnshire County Council and the local police to try to determine the best way forward to alleviate the obstructions being caused by inconsiderate and illegal parking, whilst not adversely affecting the trade of local shops.

Sponsors Villagers will be aware that the three flower tubs outside the Co-op on Vicarage Lane have for several years been sponsored by Charles Warner.

This arrangement has now come to an end and the Council is looking for a new sponsor, or sponsors.

Each tub can be sponsored for £30 per season (summer/winter) or all three for £70. Sponsors’ names with agreed wording would be placed on the tubs, as is presently the case.

Please get in touch with the Council if this is something you would like to do to help maintain the floral attractiveness of the village.

The Council has indicated its support for an event (in the nature of a street party) which is being organised jointly by a local resident and Threshold Church. Details of this Diamond Jubilee event can be found on page 53 and it is hoped that many residents, groups and organisations will want to become incolved in this exciting new community event.

Fraudsters claiming to be from National Government Bodies Lincolnshire County Council have received numerous complaints from people who have been contacted by phoney officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Office of Fair Trading.

These people have been contacted by telephone and told that they are owed large amounts of money by the government. To release the funds, the unsuspecting victim is asked to carry out some instructions, usually involving paying an upfront fee.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my family and friends who attended my ‘21st’ Birthday Party at Nettleham Village Hall on 26 November 2011. Thank you all so much for your presents and contributions towards my new 42” television which was installed just before Christmas (I couldn’t wait for the sales!). No need for glasses now!

I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone in the village for their support during my husband, Gavin Hall’s, recent illness and subsequent passing.

Thanks also to ‘Awesome Discos’ and a special thanks to ‘The Storybook’ who performed for us all. What a fantastic job they did, and what a treat to hear some live sixties music again.

I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did, even nearly chopping my fingertip off (could only happen to me!) and spending several hours at A&E (where the doctors sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me) didn’t spoil it for me.

From Watford My birthday was in December and this year I decided to just forget it as I haven’t many close family and I hated the thought of being yet another year older! I even had a dentist appointment!

Mid morning, the young woman who helps me in my home, paid me a surprise visit with a present for me which was a disc of “The King’s Speech” which she knew I would love.

The postman brought me seven birthday cards and the winter edition of Nettleham News - always a joy to receive.

I attended the dentist in the afternoon and, as I was leaving, Dr Sheena handed me ten beautiful roses! She said they were from her and all her staff for my birthday.

What an emotional surprise that was!

And Another Thank You I would like to express my sincere thanks to the people who looked after me early on Saturday morning 26 November after my nasty fall in Crescent Close, and waited with me until the ambulance came. I don’t know all their names, but there was a lady with a Border Terrier, the lady from the Co-op, a gentleman who stopped his car, WPC Jackie Raby, and Sandra and Dave Skipworth who came walking by and took my shopping home with them. I spent the morning in A&E and after being treated went to spend the night with my daughter.

The gentleman who stayed said what a caring village we live in. I wholeheartedly agree - many, many thanks to you all.

Last year was incredibly tough for us, but the support of our family and friends has helped us through and will hopefully continue to do so. To be told at the age of 44 that you have terminal cancer is totally devastating and turned our world upside down. To watch him suffer and waste away was tremendously hard, but in the end he passed away at home with his family around him which is what he wanted and he will continue to be very much loved by us all.

Plans for Major Housing Development in Nettleham Nettleham residents may remember that Truelove Property & Construction Ltd revealed plans for large-scale house building in Nettleham in 2008. It is understood the company is to submit a planning application to West Lindsey District Council very shortly.

The company wants to build on three separate areas of land which it owns on the edge of Nettleham: 1. Approximately 40 acres to the east of High Leas and Highfields; the plans include a ‘super surgery’, 19 acres of housing, a new scout building and new woodland.

2. Land either side of Greetwell Lane; the plan (as it was in 2008 without the village hall), is to build up to 250 houses; 10-20 houses a year, over a number of years.

3. More housing along the A46 from Deepdale Lane to the existing houses on Nettleham Heath.

In addition they want to develop a 3-acre plot of land on the Nettleham side of the Wragby Road bypass roundabout.

A Neighbourhood Plan for Nettleham to provide a fresh perspective.

In addition, the Committee will have the possibility of co-opting up to two additional members from time to time, as the need might arise.

You may have heard a lot recently about ‘Localism’, ‘The Communities Act’ and in particular ‘Neighbourhood Plans’ (NP), in the media.

Last year, Nettleham Parish Council decided to investigate this further and see how it could benefit the village.

This short article is intended to inform you, the residents, of the results of that investigation and what the Parish Council is planning to do.

The Committee’s Terms of Reference will need to be produced and roles and responsibilities defined, followed by a plan of action. We will also need to work with WLDC on the plan, as it needs to take into account the Local Development Plan ‘and ideally offer something extra’.

What is Neighbourhood Planning?

If they wish to, local (parish and town) councils can now work with their communities to develop a Neighbourhood Plan (NP) for their area. This might show where new homes or other buildings can be built, specify design criteria for any future development, or protect a valued area of local green space. Alternatively, they might draw up a Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) for a particular site, which grants automatic planning permission for building on that site, so long as it meets any conditions they specify. Before they come into force, draft NP’s and NDO’s will have to be checked over by an independent examiner (to ensure they conform to certain planning rules) and must gain support from a majority of local people voting in a referendum.

Why should we do this?

It has been said: “If you don’t want development in your community don’t do anything”. However that would leave us open to the risk of having externally developed plans imposed upon us. Whilst under the new legislation we cannot use an NP to block development that is already in the Local Development Plan, we will be able to identify sites which would be most appropriate for the development we most want to see in our community, and sites which should be protected and preserved.

What will it cost?

What’s next?

Estimates vary due to the uncertainty about the costs of the inspection and referendum, but approximately £20,000 seems to be the latest best guess.

The Parish Council is forming a Steering Committee of local people and it is planned that this should be approximately 10 in total, of which four are Parish Councillors. The four Parish Councillors are Joe Siddall, Allan Bonney, Malcolm Leaning and John Evans, with Janice Clayton, ex officio as vice-chair of the Parish Council.

Most of these Councillors worked on the Parish Plan and/or the Village Design Statement and therefore have experience of the process. We also have some volunteers from the Parish Plan group who would now like to be involved in this project, so we already have an experienced team identified.

Of the six non-PC members, four will be from the Parish Plan Committee and two further new members will be recruited from the wider community

Is support available?

The local District Council (West Lindsey) has a statutory obligation to provide non-financial support to any parish producing a Plan. WLDC will also sponsor and help with an application to the Government for a grant to help cover the costs, although funding may be limited and not cover all the costs. The Parish Council will be working with WLDC to submit an appropriate bid. In the meantime the Parish Council has budgeted £7,000 to be spent in the NP preparation in 2012/13.

This whole project will involve quite a lot of work and is likely to take about 2/3 years to complete. Pilot schemes are already underway in Lincolnshire, so we should be able to learn from them, which should help reduce the workload somewhat.

Where does this leave the Parish Plan?

The Parish Plan produced in 2007 has been largely implemented, or is underway now (eg the Bishops’ Palace site is now funded and about to commence development). The Parish Plan Action Committee will therefore be wound up at the end of March 2012 and replaced by the new NP Steering Committee.

This plan will help to shape the future of our community, so it is vital that it is well informed, with a diverse range of opinions.

Nettleham Woodland Trust Lincolnshire Co-operative Wood: Tree Planting

Sponsor a tree in a brand new avenue walk to mark the Golden Jubilee year: 2012

By the time you read this, Lincolnshire Co-operative members will have taken part in the planting of the new 10-acre Co-operative Wood in Dunholme. The wood lies adjacent to Monks Wood in Ashing Lane and will become part of the Ashing Lane Nature Reserve.

The main tree planting took place on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February, when local school children and Co-operative members helped plant 4,700 trees and shrubs. Alder, ash, willow, oak, aspen and downy birch are the main tree species, with a hedge of hawthorn, blackthorn and guelder rose. The Co-operative Wood will be a wet woodland with a large pond and an island for nesting birds. We had to get planning permission to make the pond and island and the ground work will begin any day now.

All Abilities Area at Monks Wood On 10 February, children from Dunholme St Chad’s Primary School helped plant 420 trees around the new All Abilities Area at Monks Wood. The trees were provided free from the Woodland Trust as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and included a special Jubilee Oak grown from an acorn on the royal estates. We chose native trees with a harvest theme.

When they mature, visitors will be able to pick the fruit in the autumn and make delicious home-made jams, jellies and chutneys.

We are hoping for further funding from WREN to continue the development of the All Abilities Area later in the spring.

Jubilee Walk, Monks Wood To celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, the NWT committee has decided to plant a special Jubilee Walk at Monks Wood.

We have ordered 60 small-leaved lime trees and they will be planted either side of the pathway leading from the main entrance to the Monk Oak and then on to the beginning of the woodland walk. Planting of the avenue will take place on Saturday 10 March. NWT supporters have been invited to sponsor a Jubilee Tree for £10.

Commemorative Tree Planting

Bonfires

On a bitterly cold afternoon, Friday 11 November 2011 (Armistice Day), members of Nettleham Gardeners’ Association gathered to see a commemorative tree being planted in Bill Bailey’s Field in memory of Cyril Needham by his daughter Yvonne and nephew Paul.

Garden bonfires, if burned in an uncontrolled manner, may give off smoke which will annoy and be a nuisance to neighbours.

For many years Cyril was a popular member of our village gardening club and was also President in his later years.

● Compost as much garden rubbish as possible and keep any burning to a minimum.

As an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced gardener, he regularly walked away with several trophies at the Annual Gardeners’ Show, held in the village hall every September. He will be sadly missed.

The tree, a purple or copper beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’) is a natural ‘sport’ of the common beech, discovered in the eighteenth century and will grow to a height and spread of around 10m in twenty years, eventually growing much larger as it attains maturity.

Beeches are one of Britain’s best-known and loved trees. Frequently used for hedging, when it is clipped annually to retain the desired shape, both this and young trees, despite being deciduous, retain their glorious reddish-brown leaves through the winter, until replaced by the new bright green foliage in the spring.

Smoke problems from garden bonfires can be minimised by following these simple guidance notes:

Mature trees usually have a massive trunk of smooth greyish bark, often with a distinctive buttressed base. A mature beech wood is one of the wonders of the British countryside, particularly in the autumn months.

The timber is hard and very strong, close-grained and of a bright buff colour with mid-brown flecks. It is traditionally used in furniture and turned items such as tool handles, bowls and spoons.

Beeches, including the purple or copper beech, freely regenerate from seed, although the copper beech, in which the rich purplish-brown colour of the leaves mask the the green chlorophyll content, is usually grafted onto common beech rootstock for additional vigour.

● Hedge clippings and other woody cuttings, which are unsuitable for composting, should be thoroughly dried before being burnt. A quick, hot fire will produce a minimum of smoke. ● Do not light a bonfire if the wind is going to cause the smoke or smuts to be a nuisance to anyone. ● Avoid lighting a fire within an hour of sunset, or leaving it alight later than one hour after sunset, when weather conditions often cause smoke to hang in the air. ● Do not leave the bonfire unattended as burning conditions may change quickly with the possibility of either heavy smoke emissions, or risk to the safety of nearby structures. ● Never allow a bonfire to smoulder extinguish it with soil, or water, before leaving it. ● For safety’s sake, never add household rubbish to a garden bonfire, particularly items such as aerosol cans or plastics, as explosions or acrid, chemical smoke may result. ● Be aware of the law concerning smoke nuisance: The Environmental Protection Act 1990 gives a local authority the power to serve an Abatement Notice where it is satisfied that a nuisance has occurred, or is likely to occur or recur, which effectively prohibits further nuisance. If such an Abatement Notice is then contravened, it can result in a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale (currently £5,000).

● As an alternative to garden bonfires, there is the WLDC Garden Waste Collection Service. Or you may choose to take your garden rubbish to your local house waste recycling centre (tip).

Your co-operation in avoiding nuisance from smoke and ash will be appreciated by all your neighbours.

The New Year came and finally the scaffolding around the village hall had been removed and the new roof looked wonderful.

At last we could start using our lovely garden again. We started by tidying up our vegetable plot and dug up the remaining vegetables and made a hearty vegetable soup with them. A big thank you must go to the Parish Council for their generous grant of £100 to build some raised beds to plant more vegetables, fruit and flowers.

Early Years Practitioner Julia Goodman, has drawn up a beautiful plan of what the garden will look like when finished and is planning to get started in the next few weeks - weather permitting of course!

In January we celebrated All Things Oriental and made sushi, tried some Chinese food and made money envelopes and dragon masks for the Chinese New Year. We enjoyed a great week during our Weather Week when we had sunny but frosty days, a rainy day and a foggy day, we would have liked a snowy day, but you can’t have it all can you? The children made some lovely hand-prints in the frost and some even managed to write their name in it, we aren’t ones to miss a mark-making moment! We also learnt about staying healthy and talked about some of the animals we might find in a zoo, making some very feathery parrot puppets to take home. Some of the topics we will be covering in the run-up to the summer holidays include talking about recycling, Easter, dinosaurs, Holi and music and movement, and we have lots of great ideas to support these themes.

Every week we include a baking activity which is always very popular with the children. As well as the sushi and vegetable soup already mentioned, we have also made bread buns, coconut macaroons and biscuits in the shape of crowns during our topic about castles.

On 6 March we will be hosting a Ladies’ Night in the large hall of the Old School rooms, Mill Hill, Nettleham. There will be lots of stalls selling beauty products, kitchen accessories, home-made cakes and so on. The price is £4 if the ticket is bought in advance and £5 on the night. We open

the doors at 8.00pm and the event will close at 10.00pm. There will also be refreshments in the kitchen.

We are an all-inclusive setting and take children from 2 years until they start school and offer funded places for 3 year olds, call in and speak to Allison or Vicki for more details. We are open 8.30am until 3.30pm during term time, and currently have spaces in most of our sessions. As a setting we put a lot of emphasis on the child’s social and emotional development, as these must be robust before learning in other areas can be effective. We encourage independent thinking, but are always on hand to offer support where needed to 17

promote the child’s self esteem and confidence.

These are truly wonderful figures and say a great deal for the generosity of Nettleham people, not to mention the time and effort that is given in order to achieve these results.

Nettleham British Legion Poppy Appeal 2012 In these days of financial constraints it is reasonable to assume that contributions to charities may have declined.

In some cases that could be true, but not so for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Nettleham. It was another record year in 2011, when we again surpassed the previous year’s total. It is now becoming something of a habit!

Our total for the year was £3,038.56, which was a magnificent effort given that one important house-to-house route was not covered because of illness.

Our house-to-house collectors once again did a terrific job, something which we have come to expect, but never to take for granted. It is hard work and a job that not everyone can do. They deserve our special thanks for raising the sum of £1,709.54.

The business outlets again gave their full support in allowing the use of their premises, producing a total of £1,100.59.

We are indebted to them for their full co-operation.

A church collection produced £122.59 and an individual donation of £108.84 was received from a Nettleham resident.

Each year at least one important route in the village is not covered because of illness or infirmity and this situation will continue in years to come.

Several of our collectors and organisers have been doing the work for many years and, of course, cannot go on forever.

Wise Owls Enjoy Fellowship

Here are the ‘Wise Owl’ doorstops produced, as our sewing project, during the autumn session of the Creative Fellowship at Nettleham Methodist Church and which are now earning their keep in a number of village homes.

We need to recruit more younger people if the Poppy Appeal in Nettleham is to continue for years to come. House-to-house collectors are needed in some areas, whilst there is also a need for someone to take over as organiser of the appeal in the future. We must plan ahead if the appeal is to have a future and to do this we must have “new blood” in our ranks.

We are a group of ladies who meet at 1.30pm each Wednesday for fellowship, friendship and crafts. Throughout the year we embark upon a number of projects covering a variety of crafts. Over the summer months, rather than planned activities, we encourage members to bring along a personal item of craft to work on, whilst enjoying company and conversation.

That planning needs to start now and I would urge anyone interested in the Poppy Appeal to contact me for further information (telephone 01522 751370).

At every session we have a quiet time, which may include a piece of poetry, or perhaps a favourite reading and, of course, there are always refreshments.

Finally I would like to thank our organising group for the valuable work they do each year and also the three new volunteers who gave their help at the money-count.

A record year in 2011 needs to be emulated in 2012.

As you might expect, ours is a popular group and, with some 30 ladies in the group we are currently at capacity.

However, it is always worth asking if we have any spare places.

Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society Now that spring is upon us once again, it’s time to think about what you’re going to enter in the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association annual show at the village hall in September this year.

As weather conditions improve, temperatures rise and the soil becomes increasingly warmer and more manageable, gardeners can once again get out into their gardens and begin the preparations for another year of growing.

Sowing seeds, taking cuttings, layering, dividing and other means of propagation will provide lots of colour in the flower garden during the summer and autumn months, but don’t forget to get your vegetables under way too, so that when the day arrives for the annual show, you’ll have some superb specimens to take along to the village hall.

It’s always a very popular village event and the organisers would like to see more entries than ever this year.

Relay for Life Relay for Life, Lincolnshire, comes to your neighbourhood Relay for Life brings together, families, friends, work colleagues and the community in teams to help beat cancer.

Throughout the year, these teams raise funds in their local communities to support Relay for Life, Cancer Research UK. The highlight in the Relay calendar is when everyone comes together in an inspiring 24-hour, overnight celebration in which the whole community can unite. Relay events focus on fun for all the family, regardless of age or fitness level.

Although the name Relay is similar and frequently gets mistaken with Race for Life - it is very different - you do not have to wear pink, it’s not just for girls and you don’t have to run - Relay is a non-athletic event and everyone is welcome!

Over the 24-hour Relay event, teams take it in turns to walk around a track - the only requirement being that one member of the team is on the track at all times.

Teams work hard to create a party atmosphere for the whole community at the event. Food, games, music, displays

and other entertainment help to create this atmosphere along with further fund-raising initiatives. Everyone is invited to come along and celebrate the lives of those touched by cancer and show their support for the vital work of Cancer Research UK. Relay is a national event, first taking place in Lincolnshire in 2010, seeing 13 teams taking part and raising £13k. The second Relay for Life, Lincoln, was held in July 2011 and saw 30 teams taking part and raising an incredible £50,000 for Cancer Research! As you can imagine we were absolutely delighted with the results, which also made us the fastest growing Relay across the country.

Our 2012 Relay event (21/22 July) will see some exciting changes. We will still have music, refreshments, stalls and a wide variety of entertainment, which this year will include one of Lincolnshire’s best known and loved bands: Soul Solution.

In addition we are delighted to announce that Relay for Life Lincolnshire will take place in Welton at William Farr School a much larger venue allowing for a greater number of teams and attractions during

Our own total eventually reached 335 boxes and it was simply great to realise that we were bringing joy to more than three hundred families at Christmas time. Of course, there were many more happy families when the remaining boxes were delivered and so many beaming smiles, as well as tears of joy, as a result of the boxes. Thank you all so much once again for caring and sharing.

Many of you are already busily knitting hats, mitts, scarves, etc, for this year’s Shoebox Appeal. Knowing as we do now how low temperatures can get in the winter months, your help is invaluable. Thank you so much.

NETTLEHAM BOWLS CLUB Lawn bowls is a sport that is played by a wide range of people, male and female, from the young (you probably need to be 10 years old in order to hold the bowl) to the not-so-young (players at 90+ are not uncommon).

Lawn bowls is played in the open air and is a good way to maintain or even develop fitness and flexibility without getting involved in excessive exercise.

The Nettleham Club, on Sudbrooke Lane, is open to literally anyone. The Club caters for all levels of skill (or lack of skill) and we offer a wide range of facilities; coaching is free if you want it. The Club arranges friendly matches, competitive matches and tournaments. You can enter County and National competitions and the Club operates a friendly social calendar where you can meet like-minded people. If you just want social bowling, we also run a Fun League on a Friday afternoon.

Lincoln Lions Lincoln Lions issue Cycling Challenge to all Teenagers On 29 April 2012, Lincoln Lions are organising a Three Twenties Cycle Challenge which is open to everyone aged between 11 and 18.

The aim for the participants is to cycle 20 miles around the perimeter road inside RAF Scampton and to raise at least £20 each in sponsorship for the very worthwhile Teenage Cancer Trust.

It’s going to be a brilliant day with over 300 young people from all over the Lincoln area taking part in the challenge in a totally safe environment.

Every participant will be given a pink T-shirt to wear on the day and we are encouraging friends to ride together to make it a real fun experience. Mums and dads are very welcome to come along on the day to watch and shout encouragement too.

Beware Imposters!

Fraudsters claiming to be from national government bodies are trying to con people out of their hard-earned cash, warns Lincolnshire Trading Standards.

The watchdog has received scores of complaints from people who have been contacted by phoney officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Office of Fair Trading.

Having been contacted by telephone and told that they are owed large amounts of money by the government, in order to release the funds, the unsuspecting victim is asked to carry out some instructions, usually involving paying an upfront fee.

Lincolnshire Trading Standards is urging people to ignore the imposters and

warning against transferring money in the hope of getting more back.

The intention of the scam is to persuade someone to send money on the promise of a larger return. Just because someone tells you they’re from a prominent organisation doesn’t mean they actually are. In fact, they rely on you being taken in by the organisation’s good name and reputation.

A big thank you to everyone who supported the Scout and Guide Christmas Raffle.

Lots of tickets were sold outside the Co-op on several cold days before the main event which this year was supported by a new venture: the “Nettleham Community Market”.

Stalls and produce were sold by several local residents ranging from local honey to handmade cards; freshly baked bread to Christmas gifts; home made chutneys and cakes to knitted hearts. It was lovely to see so many people coming along to look at the stalls whilst enjoying tea, coffee or mince pies. The scout group raised a fantastic £1,140.

The next Nettleham Community Market and Coffee Morning will be on Saturday, 24 March 2012, 9.00am to 12.00 noon at the Scout Hut. Come along to support your local residents.

Thank you also to everyone who has used the bottle banks on the Co-op car park to recycle their Christmas empties!

Please do continue to support this initiative, as it is an important part of our fundraising.

The Christmas activities are all behind us now and with the new year under way the scout group has a lot to look forward to - summer camping, Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Lincoln District Centenary year, Olympic fun events, carnival floats and lots more.

Our usual spring Breakfast on the Green will be on Saturday 19 May 9.00am to 12 noon, so please come along and treat yourself to a lovely cooked breakfast (see page 3).

If someone pressures you for money, contact information or personal details treat them with scepticism, because genuine organisations don’t do that.

All the units are full to capacity and lots of children are patiently waiting for a place to start them on their scouting journey. Unfortunately, without new leaders to open another unit, some children will be sadly disappointed.

Nettleham Medical Practice and Cherry Willingham Branch Surgery New Clinical Computer System The practice will be transferring to its new clinical computer system in May 2012.

The new system, called Systmone, has many new facilities which will help improve our care to you. One of the new features in the system is the ability for us to share information (with patient consent) with the local district nurses, OOH and the walk-in centre. This is a major step forward, reducing duplication of work, increasing safety and making sure a patient’s latest records are shared by more of the teams who support them.

Whilst we shall try and make the transfer as smooth as possible, there will inevitably be some disruption whilst staff and GPs become fully trained in the new system. More details will be given nearer the time.

Controlled Drug Collection A number of our patients have prescriptions for controlled drug medication such as Morphine. These medications have to be treated differently in the dispensary and are governed by very strict legislation.

To improve our management of these particular drugs, from the New Year, when a patient or a patient’s representative comes to collect these medications from the dispensary at either practice, they will be asked for ID. This is so that the dispensers can be 100% sure who is collecting the medication. We would request that anybody collecting any of these medications ensure that they bring some form of ID with them, so that the medication can be issued without delay.

Early Closures (Training) In order to enable our doctors and staff to be kept up to date, Nettleham surgery will be closed for training at 1.00pm on the following afternoons.

The driving scheme continues to flourish, with more and more patients making use of the offer of a lift to and from their appointments.

We are looking for people to volunteer their services in order to expand the team, based in all areas covered by the surgery and it would help if you had a reasonable knowledge of the whole area. You need to be over 25 with at least 3 years’ driving experience and ideally a clean licence. There is no upper age limit. You will need to own or have access to a 4/5 door vehicle.

Sometimes the patients use support buggies to assist in their getting around and these would need to be put in your car between the patient’s home and the surgery.

It must be pointed out that this is a voluntary service and that each new driver must be CRB checked before they can start to work for the scheme.

The CRB check is paid for by Lincoln County Council and each driver is allowed to claim 45p per mile for every mile they do in the course of their duties. There is a set rate for each trip.

How to complete the necessary paperwork and how the scheme works would be explained before the start of your employment.

Wildlife in the Village I wonder how many of you saw the recent reports on the television about some cousins of mine who are making a bit of a name for themselves.

Black squirrels - whatever next! Apparently, having established themselves in the south of England, they are now beginning to extend their territory and have been reported as far north as Peterborough.

I wonder how long it will be before someone spots one in this neck of the woods in Lincolnshire?

Talking of woods, I see that a section of the Bishops’ Palace Field (which does not form part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument site) may be the subject of a planting programme for a wide range of different trees and shrubs, some of which may be fruit, berry and nut trees. Now this is very good news - I’m always looking for a new source of food and to have a larder on the doorstep will suit me down to the ground!

I’m always interested to hear about nature and wildlife in Nettleham and would warmly welcome any reports from residents about things they have seen perhaps in their gardens, or whilst out for a stroll round the village.

Do you have a particular interest in natural history about which you could write for other readers to share and enjoy? Perhaps you are a keen bird-watcher, or maybe fascinated by butterflies, moths or other insects, or it might be wild flowers or toadstools that press your button.

Whatever it is - birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, fungi, etc, etc, I would simply love to hear from you with your observations and comments on our local flora and fauna.

Every season of the year presents different opportunities to observe local wildlife and jot down a few notes (perhaps with some photographs too) so don’t be afraid that you won’t find anything of interest - even the simplest things can often provide the greatest satisfaction and everyone I know likes to read about the discoveries and experiences of other people in their local neighbourhood.

Yen for Prosperity In the wake of the banking crisis in Europe, uncertainty has now hit Japan.

In the last seven days the Origami Bank has folded, the Sumo Bank has gone belly up and the Bonsai Bank announced plans to cut some of its branches.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Karaoke Bank is up for sale and will likely go for a song, whilst today shares in the Kamikaze Bank were suspended after they nose-dived.

While the Samurai Bank is soldiering on following sharp cutbacks, the Ninja Bank is reported to have taken a hit, but they remain in the black.

Furthermore, 500 staff at the Karate Bank got the chop and analysts report that there is something fishy going on at the Sushi Bank, where it is feared that staff may get a raw deal.

The professor then said: “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism”.

All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade, so effectively no one will fail and no one will receive an A.

Senior citizens are constantly being criticised for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world - real or imaginary.

We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

However, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took: ●

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. Not surprisingly, the students who had studied hard were upset and the students who had studied little were happy.

The courtesy out of driving

The romance out of love

The commitment out of marriage

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little for the first test had studied even less and the ones who had studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too, so they studied little. The second test average was a D! Needless to say, no one was very happy.

The learning out of education

●

The service out of patriotism

●

The civility out of behaviour

Following the third test, the average was an F. As successive tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and, of course, no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

The prudence out of spending

The ambition out of achievement

●

God out of government and school

To their great surprise, in the final test ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!

Here are some conclusions: 1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

And we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

Yes, I’m a senior citizen!

I’m the life of the party - even if it lasts until 8.00pm.

I’m very good at opening childproof caps with a hammer.

I’m frequently awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I’m smiling all the time - because I can’t hear a thing you’re saying.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by simply dividing it

I‘m sure everything I can’t find is in a safe and secure place - somewhere.

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work, because the other half is going to take care of it for them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

I’m wrinkled, saggy and lumpy - and that’s just my left leg.

What can we offer you? What can you do to help your community?

Lincoln Area Dial a Ride (LADR) have been providing an essential mobility service for the local community in Lincoln and the surrounding villages (up to a radius of 6 miles) since 1987.

We provide an affordable and accessible door-to-door transport service for the disabled and elderly, who have problems using mainstream public transport.

The service is funded by grants from local councils, as well as by the membership fees, charges and charitable donations received from the public and organisations such as the Lincoln Co-op.

There are eight modern and fully converted minibuses capable of meeting the needs of our users.

We are currently carrying 27,000 passengers a year, many of whom would not be able to get out at all and could be housebound, were it not for the service we provide. Although we have a strong and well-established membership, many people are not aware of just what we can offer and the excellent vehicles we have to make getting about much easier and more convenient.

If you find it difficult to get out on a regular basis, have problems waiting at a bus stop, or perhaps if you are in a wheelchair, why not consider LADR membership?

There is a small annual fee and we offer very competitive prices for journeys. If you travel with a carer, they can also be accommodated.

Queen Edith Wife, then widow, of Edward the Confessor Queen Edith was queen of England from her marriage to Edward the Confessor on 23 January 1045 until his death on 4 or 5 January 1066.

She is important to us because she held the manor of Nettleham as part of her dower lands. A queen’s dower lands were given to her to support her after the death of her husband, when his lands, and those lands held by them jointly, went to the king’s heir or successor. After her death these usually returned to the crown, not necessarily to be passed on to another queen as dower lands. Certainly William I’s queen, Matilda, had already been allotted dower lands without taking any away from Edith in the latter’s lifetime. However we do know that the manor of Nettleham did eventually go to Henry I’s queen, as when he gave the manor of Nettleham to the Bishop of Lincoln, he did so with his wife’s agreement.

Edith came from a powerful family. She was the daughter of earl Godwin, sister of king Harold Godwinson, who reigned briefly in 1066, and distantly related by marriage to king Cnut, through her mother the Countess Gytha.

Edward and Edith had no children. Some believe this was because he disliked Edith and her family, as he was forced into this marriage because earl Godwin had helped to make him king. Certainly he quarrelled with the whole Godwin family in 1051 and banished them all. However instead of divorcing Edith as he was under some pressure to do at the time, he banished her to a nunnery. When the quarrel was resolved in 1052, Edith was reinstated to full honour. Others believe that the marriage was unconsummated due to Edward’s religious scruples. At this distance in time we may never know the truth, but what we do know is that Edith survived as queen, apart from the one hiccough, already mentioned, and survived as dowager queen until her death in 1075.

Reports from the time describe her as a learned queen, an able linguist, musical and a talented embroiderer. There are some less favourable reports of her temper, but on the whole the impression gained is of a queen who was modest and deferential to her husband in public, but exerted great influence in private. However some of the information of her character does come from a narrative which she later commissioned, so it is difficult to be certain. The evidence which does give a

clear view of her place in the hierarchy are the charters which she witnessed, being second signatory after the king. There are enough of these to indicate that there was a close relationship between her and Edward, regardless of whether or not the marriage was consummated.

After the accession of William I, Edith seems to have retired from public life and caused William no trouble. There is no evidence that she was a rallying point for rebellion, although her mother Gytha certainly was. At her death, a week before Christmas in 1075, William had her body brought to Westminster and had her buried with great honour next to her husband.

This is just a brief account of queen Edith, as I hope to publish a booklet with a fuller account of her life and family, and the convoluted relationships of the ruling family early in the eleventh century.

Colin is 65 Who said that? What are you talking about? It’s only a few years ago that I started, so it can’t be over 40 years oh yes it can - and it is!

I started in the early 70’s and that was at the time that Charlie Trott retired and Chris Parker started Parker’s Coaches. Since then it has been Appleby’s, Mass Transport and now PC Coaches.

But let’s go way back to the very early days of the service (thanks for this information goes to Ken Weatherston). So did you know that it all started as a carrying service, ie parcels, by a gentleman called Savage who delivered mostly parcels and some passengers on market days around the local villages. The service then went to a couple called Grantham and Simms and then became Trotts.

Charlie Trott started in 1929 and became a regular passenger service to Lincoln, originally operating from Scothern. Charlie kept the service running right throughout the war, and the buses were kept in what is now The Barn (behind the Tea Cosy) and a petrol pump was located in front of it (see page 66). The buses were then moved to the Trott’s family home, which is at the side of Bill Bailey’s Field - you can still see the old sheds today.

So that brings it up to 1971 and enter Parker’s Coaches and me! I was very young and thought it would be fun to ‘do’ the service for a few months. Little did I know

that in a few weeks I would fall in love with the people of Nettleham and stay for all these years. Most of you know my life history as I know I do ‘talk’ a bit! For those of you who don’t here are a few bits about me. I joined the Post Office straight from school at fifteen-and-a-half, drove a motor cycle from the age of sixteen (having passed my test at the age of sixteen and three days!) for the post office telegram’s department. At eighteen I moved to the sorting office and started van driving one week after my eighteenth birthday.

At twenty-one I passed the PSV (Passenger Coach driving test) six weeks after my birthday, all first time! (Luck!)

At this time I was still at the post office and driving coaches part time; I took part in the British Coach Driver of the Year competition in Brighton in the early 70’s and finished 3rd in class out of around 200 experienced drivers. I was still only twenty-three at the time! This made me a big hit with the directors of Willowbrook Coach Builder’s (they got me drunk that night!).

Anyway, as you can see, I spent my working life hanging on to a steering wheel (I even have to steer the shopping trolley around Tesco!). How many miles?

I don’t have a clue, but I’m sure in all that time I must have upset some of you while driving a forty-foot bus around the village all day long and for this I would like to say sorry to you all!

Back to my past (and present!). I married Lynn Pamley, daughter of George (Manager of the Co-op) in 1977. Lynn was a passenger on the bus (bet she wished she had used the Road Car!). In 1983 our daughter Kirsty was born and went on to graduate from Nottingham University as a Registered Nurse specialising in learning disabilities (RNLD). She married Darren and they now have a daughter and son (Ruby and Archie) well-known on the bus and loved by all.

Our son Stuart was born in 1986 and went into turf management, going to Riseholme University and then to Carholme Golf Club to be come a well respected member of their greens’ team. Unfortunately he has been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis; this has resulted in him having to have a number of operations to his spine and recently to his leg. This has left him with nerve damage to his leg and reliant upon a walking stick for the time being - only time will tell as to how this will heal. Anyway he married Katherine and they have two very pretty girls, Ella and Isabelle, giving us four beautiful grandchildren, whom Lynn and I love to bits. We are very proud indeed of them all.

I always thought that when I reached 65 I would reduce my hours. Although I am fit and well, I have unfortunately seen two very close friends pass away recently, both in their early 70’s, and this seems to be the right time for me to slow down a little.

on the 30 April 2012

This brings us up to the present time and 30 April 2012 will see my 65th birthday.

Since the early 70’s I have worked a fifty- to sixty-hour week and still found time to be a rally driver, to participate in cycling competitions and, of course, our continued love of caravanning! I can’t seem to leave the road alone can I! I am not retiring completely, but I will be reducing my hours, intending to do a three-day week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will not be working any of the school holidays - ie a 38-week year.

I am sure that Lynn will find me lots to do and I have some hobbies to get back to as well.

I cannot thank you all enough for accepting me after thirty-five years of Charlie Trott - he was a very hard act to follow! I worked for Applebys for over twenty good years, but unfortunately the company went into liquidation and was split into two parts, the coach side under the safe hands of Bowings Travel. The service and contract side was sold off in bits and I must take this opportunity to thank my boss Pete and his team at PC Coaches for giving me the chance to carry on the service with an open hand -

I did it my way (is that a song?!) Also he let me try some day-trips which were a great success and continued for two really good years. Unfortunately new EC rulings made it difficult to do both - still it was fun and we all enjoyed it.

To all of you who have done my shopping and queued in the bank for me, a very special thank you, in fact so many times so many of you have given me help of one kind or another and I can only say thank you to you all. The people of Nettleham hold a very special place in my heart. I do hope as I reduce my hours you will accept whoever fills in for me during the summer holidays, etc, and remember I will be back at the end of each school holiday - so no rumours that I have retired completely please! So just to put it once more, from May, I will be doing a three-day week and taking all school holidays off.

The Bishops’ Palace Readers may remember the public consultation which took place in the village during the formulation of the Nettleham Parish Plan in 2007.

One of the points to emerge from this consultation was the desire by many village residents to see something done to develop, improve and raise the profile of the Bishops’ Palace field, a feature of significant historic importance, which had lain largely unused, unnoticed and neglected for many years.

On pages 36/37 in this edition of Nettleham News, there is information about new developments proposed for the site as a result of a successful application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

However, some years ago, we very nearly lost a considerable area of this site to a new housing development In 1947 the site had been inspected for scheduling under the Ancient Monument Act and in a letter of 5 March 1952 from G C Dunning, Inspector of Ancient Monuments, he said: “In order to comprehensively excavate the site it is estimated that it would take several seasons 3-5 years, working 3-4 months each summer (c£500 each year), voluntary

labour and employment of labourers and mechanical equipment (also even a light railway) to deal with the considerable amount of soil to be removed”. However, he suggested that a full survey of the site should be made.

In 1958 Welton Rural District Council (WRDC), the local authority under whose administration Nettleham was then included, had identified this site as a suitable location for erecting a number of bungalows ‘for old people in need of care and protection’.

An area in the north-west corner of the site (known locally as ‘The Park’) fronting High Street was earmarked for the construction of eight bungalows surrounding a central open courtyard, together with a residential warden’s house (see plan below). Planning permission was actually granted on 15 May 1959 by Lindsey County Council Planning Committee.

This development eventually came to the attention of local residents and a flurry of activity and correspondence ensued.

Objections were raised and the campaign to stop the development and protect this important historical site for future generations was initiated.

As a result of the objections, a number of ‘rescue excavations’ (in which six local men were employed to dig), authorised by J G Hurst, Chief Correspondent to the Ancient Monument Division (Lincolnshire) of the Ministry of Works, were carried out from 19 - 31 October 1959, supervised by Miss Vivien Russell and Mr Stephen Moorhouse. The results of their work was published and revealed that archaeology of some significance was present in the area (see diagram on facing page).

Mrs Florence L Baker (local historian and author of the original ‘Nettleham: a Short History of the Village’ in 1938) was a prominent figure in this campaign, supported by a number of organisations including the Council for British Archaeology, the Lincolnshire Architectural & Archaeological Society, The Lincoln Archaeological Research Committee (City & County Museum) and the Lincolnshire Local History Society.

The official objection documents were submitted to the Ministry of Housing by the deadline of 20 September 1960.

been continuing in anticipation of the sale of this section of the site on which to erect the new bungalows. On 9 May 1960, however, the Church Commissioners stated their intention to withdraw the land from sale and if WRDC wished to continue with the development, it would be necessary to obtain a compulsory purchase order to proceed (which they actually did!).

As a result of the numerous objections and strong local resistance to this development, a Public Enquiry, under the auspices of the Ministry of Housing & Local Government, was held at the Council Offices at 31 Clasketgate, Lincoln, at 10.00am on 1 February 1961. (Interestingly, The Council for the Preservation of Rural England (Lincoln Branch) had previously approached the Civic Trust, which had resulted in a cheque for £10 towards the funds for the cost of the Nettleham Enquiry).

In the face of vigorous opposition and unforeseen difficulties, the plan was finally abandoned by WRDC and the future of this important historical site in Nettleham was finally secured.

In 1976, almost 30 years after being first suggested, a full survey of the site was carried out by Paul Everson (see right).

New Developments at the Bis You will probably have noticed a piece of neglected land opposite the White Hart public house on High Street, beside and behind the Methodist Chapel. This is the site of the original palace of the Bishops of Lincoln and before that it was a manor house, dating back to the ownership of Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor, king of England over 1,000 years ago.

It is anticipated that the dry-stone wall on the southern boundary will be reconstituted using the existing on-site limestone

The remaining boundary around the site will be enclosed with traditional Lincolnshire post and rail fencing

Following local interest in the site identified during the Parish Plan public consultation, Nettleham Parish Council has obtained a lease for the land from the Church Commissioners at a minimal rent and formed a Steering Group to develop this site into a local heritage amenity for the people of Nettleham. The project focus is to create better awareness and local understanding of the Scheduled Ancient Monument site located in the heart of our village. The Bishops’ Palace is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) number 22749 and is one of only 15,000 sites in the country. It is therefore very special.

At present the total site is an overgrown derelict field of some 3ha of which approximately 2.5ha is SAM. Although the Bishops’ Palace is an English Heritage protected site, there has been minimal excavation work to date. However, there are clear signs of various archaeological

features when the grass dies back in winter. The site is important as it dates back at least to Queen Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor, who is recorded as having a manor house here. It eventually passed to Henry I through his wife Maud of Scotland. They gifted it to the Bishops of Lincoln who eventually created a larger palace, appropriate to their needs. The site was almost certainly the place where the document, which created the first Prince of Wales, was scribed and ratified, during the 1301 Parliament held in the Chapter House at Lincoln Cathedral, when Edward I stayed at the Bishops’ Palace in Nettleham.

Damaged by the Lincolnshire Rising in 1536, the palace remained sporadically in use until towards the end of the sixteenth century. Its slow decay was complete about a century later.

We plan to develop this neglected field into a local amenity with a focus on its relevance to the local and national heritage. We will create a discovery trail through the site which will benefit students of all ages and will lead visitors through the site, informing them of the historical significance of the area and how these once magnificent buildings might have looked and been used. We plan to create two entrances to make the trail into

more of a journey, one by the Methodist Chapel, the other by the burial ground and will plant hawthorn and blackthorn hedging appropriate to the mediaeval period to encourage wildlife. The boundary barbed wire will be replaced with more appropriate Lincolnshire post and rail fencing. A series of interpretation boards will be erected along the route to compliment a new interpretation board at the site entrances. To compliment these, Nettleham Heritage Association will produce a booklet providing historical details of the site and its national context.

Information on the site will also be posted on the village website.

We also have a 0.5ha field adjacent to the site on the east side which provides one access route from the burial ground.

This is pasture land, which is not part of the Scheduled Ancient Monument and therefore is not as strictly controlled with regard to ground disturbance and planting. This area will be used to enhance the learning experience, with various examples of medieval arts and crafts, and possibly re-enactments and a medieval fair.

In addition we hope to plant a heritage orchard, reconstruct the dry-stone wall, as well as carry out hedge laying, and use the area to demonstrate other outdoor skills of the medieval period. Nettleham CE Junior School will be involved in co-ordinating activities on this site and the children will be asked what activities they would like to see happen there. There are lots of ideas coming forth and as we want this to be an all-inclusive, village-wide activity, we will welcome all additional suggestions and offer of help.

Other local organisations which will be closely involved in this project and are also represented on the steering group:

To help us to realise this project the Parish Council has funded the 14-year lease for the site from The Church Commissioners and obtained a grant of £23,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Steering Group is also seeking additional funding for other aspects of the project from other organisations. We will also be working with Heritage Lincs and English Heritage to ensure that there is no damage to the site caused by our activities. We hope to have an agreed timetable for the plan of action in time for the summer edition of Nettleham News.

Two Heads are Better Than One! Two small carved stone heads, both both believed to have come from the original Bishops’ Palace buildings, were incorporated into residential properties in the village and are clearly visible to the present day.

And Two Entrances are Better Than One As part of the Bishops’ Palace site development, in consultation with English Heritage, Heritage Lincs, Nettleham Heritage Association, The Environment Agency and Nettleham Parish Council, the intention is to create two entrances to the site.

The first will be on High Street, opposite the White Hart Inn, where the existing ramp, forming a pathway to the Methodist Chapel entrance, may be modified to a lower gradient in order for people with disabilities to access both the site and the Methodist Chapel more easily.

Although the second entrance to the site (currently a five-bar fieldgate) will continue to give access from the burial ground extension land (recently acquired by the Parish Council), there is the possibility of locating a secondary entrance near the centre of the site where the pastureland (which is not designated as part of the protected Scheduled Ancient Monument and may be fenced off separately) meets the official Bishops’ Palace site.

Enquiries are currently being made in an endeavour to secure additional funding for this feature.

The first (above) is on the end gable of the stone cottage at 30 High Street and can be seen by walking a few metres down Watermill Lane and looking up to your left.

The second (above) is high on the end gable of the cottage at 62 High Street.

Other pieces of carved stonework, such as a section of window tracery, have been unearthed from time to time in the village and these will most probably also have originated at the Bishops’ Palace site.

Should you dig up any interesting pieces of carved or dressed stone in your garden, do let someone from the Nettleham Heritage Association know, so that it may be recorded.

Probe at Bishops’s Manor House Site An article which appeared in the Lincolnshire Echo at the time of the Bishops’ Palace site excavations in 1959 Exploration designed to make possible the building of eight bungalows for old people in need of care and protection began at Nettleham yesterday - after Welton Rural District Council had decided to build the bungalows elsewhere.

The eight bungalows - to be built in three lines surrounding an open court - were originally planned for erection on what is termed the Park, Nettleham.

In addition to a communal sitting room, they were also to have an attached residential warden’s house.

Plans for building the bungalows went ahead and received the sanction of the Lindsey County Council, after that body had sought clearance from the Ministry of Works because the Park is the site of the old Bishop’s Manor House, Nettleham, scheduled as an ancient monument.

Nothing of Importance Information from the Ministry of Works, was that there was nothing of importance on the site. Two or three years ago the Church Commissioners owners of the site - agreed to sell to Welton R.D.C. for building purposes.

The bungalows were included in this year’s building programme by R.D.C. Then came a hitch.

Local people, becoming aware of what was planned suddenly decided their interest in the old Bishop’s Manor House was too great to allow the site to be used for this purpose.

A request came from the Ministry of Works for delay in the building until exploration had been made.

“I believe someone even wrote to the Bishop of Lincoln,” Mr Richard Smith, Surveyor and Engineer of Welton R.D.C. told the Echo.

Not wishing to upset local people, the Council agreed to delaying building on that site, and started preliminary work in connection with the choosing of another site for the old people’s bungalows.

But Miss V. Russell, an archaeologist in charge of the diggings on the Park, said yesterday that so far as she was concerned the exploration being made was simply to clear the site for building.

“I don’t think we shall find anything of any value here,” she said.

The section of the Park where it had been planned to build the bungalows is in what is believed was the courtyard of the Bishop’s Manor House. It is flanked by the overgrown and earthed remains of only one wall.

To Go On Digging “I would like to see the whole site explored so that a reconstruction of the plan of the original building could be made,” he said.

In the meantime, Miss Russell and her team of six local men go on digging.

They will continue doing that until Saturday week, so that the old people’s bungalows may go up.

But unless the county refuses permission, the old people’s bungalows will, in any case, go up in The Crescent.

All the remains of the Bishop’s Manor House itself lie well to the rear of the planned development.

Mr. Smith told the Echo that in spite of the nature of the exploration being carried on, the council would ignore that site and build on the newly selected site in The Crescent - provided approval came from the county.

The Bishop’s Manor House, Nettleham, was built by Hugh of Wells, who was consecrated Bishop of Lincoln in 1209.

He was also responsible for continuing with the building of Lincoln Cathedral, and Nettleham Church Cottages.

Drew Up Deed

It was in the Bishop’s Manor House at Nettleham in 1301 that Edward I drew up the deed by virtue of which his son, Edward of Caernarvon became the first Prince of Wales.

Last Bishop to live in the Manor House was William Wickham. It was not used after 1590, and in 1630 Bishop John Williams applied to the Archbishop of Canterbury for permission to demolish it, and it was subsequently broken down.

It is believed much of the material taken from it was used in the construction of buildings surrounding the site and the church.

Selected Spot

In the wall around the Park itself there is a small arch thought possibly to have been taken from the Manor House.

They selected a spot in The Crescent, Nettleham, and have decided to build there, subject to approval by the County Planning authority.

The Rev. H. G. Herrington, Vicar of Nettleham, hopes that local interest in the historical associations of the site will be quickened by the diggings.

Becoming Older As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to, and less critical of, myself. I’ve become my own friend.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon before they had a chance to understand the freedom that comes with ageing.

Whose business is it if I choose to read, or play on the computer until 4.00am, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 & 70’s, and if, at the same time, I wish to weep over a lost love... I will.

I’ll walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from youngsters. They, too, will get old (if they’re lucky).

I know I am sometimes forgetful, but there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s

beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion.

A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning grey, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I quite like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what might yet be.

And I shall eat a pudding every single day (if I feel like it).

Timeshares - Peace of Mind Buying a timeshare essentially involves obtaining the right to spend a specified period of time, often in an overseas property such as a studio apartment or villa in a holiday resort, on an annual basis.

Some timeshare companies employ hard hitting selling techniques. Others use a lot of glitz. Either way it is important not to be influenced or seduced.

It is also essential when considering whether to buy a timeshare that you study any agreement carefully to understand what the agreement entails and what the risks are. If in any doubt, please do consult a lawyer before committing yourself.

In other words, the recommendation is that you avoid buying on the spur of the moment or under pressure. Think carefully before going in for a particular deal and, if in doubt, do take legal advice.

It is important that you understand exactly what you are committing yourself to.

This is particularly relevant in relation to finance. Often the fees payable are a mixture of fixed fees and management charges in addition. Do make sure that

there is a cap on management charges, otherwise you will be committing yourself to an open cheque.

There are some providers who will tell you that you can change your mind. If you sign in the UK then within certain limitations that is correct, but in other jurisdictions cancellation may not be possible and if it is possible it may not be straightforward.

Caution is therefore the watchword.

Another point to consider is what happens if you wish to sell the timeshare. Is there a mechanism for sale? Is the range of buyers restricted? Is the price which is likely to be realised controlled? Again, all of these points should be carefully considered.

There are many reputable timeshare operators, but there are other timeshare operators who are less so. Whether you are dealing with a reputable company or not, it is worthwhile taking care and having the agreement checked out before you sign.

Peace of mind is an extremely valuable commodity!

In the background, we are constantly aware of the shifting balance of power in the world, instant communications that have made that world a tinder box in which new crazes can catch fire at an incredible rate, a growing population that the earth will struggle to feed, millions living in pain and poverty, the destruction of our entire habitat by the carbon outputs of greed, the apparent rise in extreme forms of good and ancient religions, and the seemingly unstoppable power of global businesses and commerce.

Hopeless.

Just when we thought all was hopeless, people have started going back to church.

Numbers at Christmas across the country were well up on the last few years. Our own churches were full many times over.

Jesus came into a similarly disturbing world. Born to a struggling peasant family in one of the poorest parts of the world, with a cruel and repressive imperial regime under the Roman empire, a Jewish state led by power-hungry, greedy fat-cats from a small number of families colluding with the occupiers, with destructive empires to the north and east sharpening their swords, he was the very antithesis of everyone’s idea of a man powerful enough to put things right. Humble, peaceful, friend of sinners, forgiving, prayerful, supporter of the weak and poor and powerless, scornful of the rich and powerful.

Funny, then, that this man and the unseen God of whom he is the very image, should be of such interest now. Or is it? Cynics might say we are grasping at straws, or that the church offers entertainment that is much cheaper than the flicks or a meal out, but there may be a better explanation!

Maybe people realise that, deep down, we have got things really badly wrong.

That wealth at any price is not a recipe for universal happiness. That success should be measured in social and environmental impact, not pounds, euros, dollars and

dirhams. That what we do for each other is more important than what we do for ourselves. That the markets don’t have all the answers, and neither do governments.

That being good is not wet - for goodness sake, it cost Jesus his life!

Being good is often the toughest way in this world, and people are looking for evidence of its power and potential, for guidance about how to play a role in making change happen, and for solidarity with others wanting to work for a brighter future for the world.

Is that why people in our parishes, in Nettleham and Scothern, Welton, Riseholme and Dunholme, across our diocese and across the land, are coming back to church? Why Religious Studies is now one of the most popular A-level choices? Why people are enquiring, reading, talking and even praying?

This isn’t shallow superstition. This is women and men, like those 2000 years ago who saw Jesus in his shabby stable in that treacherous middle eastern world, smelly shepherds and sophisticated intellectuals alike, recognising that this baby and the man he would become, is our hope for the future. His weakness is his strength, his humility his power, his death our life. Only if we learn from him, and learn to love him and all he stands for, can the world be saved.

We are all in this together, say the politicians, though actions suggest otherwise. But when Jesus says we are all in this together, we know he means it, because of Good Friday and Easter. Let us pray that our churches can be places where this truth is alive and available, where we can meet Jesus Christ in the sacraments, in the bible, in the exercise of our creative imaginations and intellects, and in each other. No-one said it would be easy taking up our cross and following him, but it is, we believe, our only hope.

March is traditionally tempestuous, and this March begins and ends in the period of self-examination and spring-cleaning which is Lent. What better time and opportunity to begin putting ourselves right with God, so we can follow Jesus to the cross in our churches this Good Friday, and then experience there the joy of life rediscovered and renewed at Easter.

Beckside Pre-school Let’s hibernate!

We had an interesting start to the New Year when we learnt about animals that hibernate for the winter. We made dens using fabric and cushions, and acted out the popular story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt!’ We had fun splashing across the river, squelching through the thick oozy mud and tip-toeing through the cave...

“It’s a bear!” We collaged pictures of creatures that hibernate to put on our display, learnt new songs about hibernation and played games. We even came to pre-school in our pyjamas for the day, so that we could pretend to hibernate like the animals we had learnt about. We ate bear shaped biscuits in our den and the postman called with a special delivery for us to look after over the half term… a cuddly bear that was hibernating (the stuffed variety!)

Chinese New Year We made a fantastic dragon mask and moved around the room to the dragon dance to celebrate Chinese New Year.

We sampled noodles, rice and stir-fried vegetables and practised using chopsticks to eat them. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr and Mrs Lee for providing us with the delicious prawn crackers and fortune cookies and for letting us borrow their beautiful dancing dragon puppets. We all had lots of fun during our celebration!

Stay and Play Parents joined us for more stay-and-play sessions. This is an opportunity to see what we do and to share in the activities that the children experience. We had some very positive and encouraging comments from a recent parent questionnaire. Here are just a few examples: “My child is excited about attending Beckside and really enjoys it there.” “It is extremely welcoming!”

“I am very happy; my children have learnt so much.” “My children are safe and secure.” “Friendly, helpful staff: a great learning environment both indoors and out.” “A friendly team of staff and it is very apparent that the children enjoy being with them and their enthusiasm shines through!” As well as parent questionnaires, we encouraged the children to have their say too. Here are some of their lovely comments: “I like playing with my friends.”

“I like playing in the sand.” “I like playing outside.” “I like having a snack.” “I like everything!”

And there’s more We have lots more planned over the coming weeks, including our topic about recycling, growing flowers and herbs and using recycled troughs and old wellies to plant them in. Many thanks to the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association for donating a composter for us to use in our garden so that we can be environmentally friendly!

Your Council Tax Bill Only 25%, a quarter of the money West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) spends, comes from you in the form of Council Tax, the remainder mostly comes from the Government in the form of a rate support grant. Parish Councils do not get any rate support grant and have to raise all the money they spend through their precept.

We all know times are difficult and public sector spending is under severe pressure due to the deficit and Government austerity measures. However WLDC had the worst settlement of any council, District or County, in Lincolnshire and one of the worst in the country in 2011 with a loss on the previous year’s grant of £2.5 million.

In 2012/13 WLDC is raising £5,861,686 from Council Tax payers and Nettleham Parish Council £112,786.

on 15 November 2011. It devolves greater powers to councils and neighbourhoods and gives local communities more control over housing and planning decisions.

Some of the revenue will be available for the local community. ● Provide for Neighbourhood Plans, which would be approved if they received 50% of the votes cast in a referendum. ● Provide for neighbourhood development orders to allow communities to approve development without requiring normal planning consent.

It also says that: ‘A local authority has power to do anything that individuals generally may do.’ This completely reverses the previous legislation which restricted councils to doing only those things that the law expressly permitted councils to do.

Solar Panels/Photo-voltaic Cells Solar Panels are fairly well known and easy to understand, the sun (when we get it!) warms water through the panels and that water is then available to the household or occupants to use instead of them paying for heating water. Photo-voltaic cells are similar to solar panels, but instead of heating water, the sunlight, even on cloudy days, is transformed into electricity and can be used by the building with the cells on its roof or sold to the national grid.

Our ‘new’ Guildhall in Gainsborough has both types on the roof and generates a large amount of electricity which can be seen on the display in the reception area.

Both these technologies are not cheap, though cheaper than they were a few years ago, and each has to have a life of around 50

Local Councillors and West Lindsey District Councillor: Malcolm Leaning shows that crime prevention requires local residents’ co-operation with the police.

Concessionary Travel - Bus Passes The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme allows all eligible older and disabled people to travel free on off-peak scheduled bus services anywhere in England. Off-peak hours are between 9.30am - 11.00pm Monday to Friday and all day on weekends and bank holidays.

From 6 April 2010 the age of eligibility for women will be pension age and for men it will be the pensionable age of a woman born on the same day. The pension age for women is rising by five years over a ten year period and the eligible age for a bus pass will rise gradually over this period. The date you will be eligible for a bus pass will depend on the month in which you were born and it will not fall on your birthday.

Application forms can be obtained from Lincolnshire County Council, City Hall, Beaumont Fee, Lincoln, LN1 1DN; your local council offices; your local library or by ringing the Concessionary Fares Team on 01522 873700.

In Lincolnshire, the County Council currently allows Lincolnshire pass holders to travel free of charge on local journeys before 9.30am on weekdays.

Green Bin Collections in Winter The current administration at WLDC has decided to stop collecting green bins during the winter months as a cost-cutting initiative - we don’t agree with the timing, but were out-voted.

It was identified that annual savings of over £150,000 could be made by making changes to the collection rounds, days of collection and the ceasing of garden waste collections over a 3- or 4-month period.

If people rely on the green waste collection to dispose of their garden waste they won’t be able to do so for all the four months when there is no collection. People will still be able to take green waste and garden waste to the waste disposal sites in Gainsborough, Lincoln and Whisby - but only if they have a car and the time!

We wonder how many will remember her serving Nettleham’s interests as their

District Councillor on Welton Rural District Council, both as Councillor Kathleen Mansford and, after her marriage, as Councillor Mrs Kathleen Hesketh?

Civilian Parking Enforcement Civilian parking enforcement is on-street parking enforcement undertaken by civilian organisations rather than the police or traffic wardens employed through the police.

At WLDC we have voted to allow the County Council to be overall parking enforcement operator for ‘on street’ parking in this part of the county. We might even see some parking enforcement in the larger villages such as those of the Lincoln Fringe - even in Nettleham!

Councillors’ Initiative Fund Many of you will know that for the past several years each councillor has had a small fund of £1,000 per year to give small grants to projects in the ward. In the past ours has been used, for example, to upgrade the Beckside path, pay for the all-weather turf in front of both goals on Bill Bailey’s playing field and supply the entire village with the Nettleham Village Design Statement. Now this fund has been increased and each Councillor has £4,000 to spend over two years.

This means that we have a total of £8,000 to spend in the ward, and we tend to work together to ensure we assist as many projects as we can. The successful individuals or organisations will have to spend the money and then produce a receipt to claim the agreed amount from West Lindsey. It might seem a bit of a roundabout way to get the money to organisations and individuals, but it is public money. Projects that seek to enhance the life of many in the ward or assist in levering in other money for projects will be the most likely to succeed in application.

From Councillor Ray Sellars Fire and Rescue Service After much wastage of both time and public money, the Regional Control Centres have now been scrapped allowing Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Service to retain a control room at its HQ. There was great concern that Lincolnshire would lose the use of its valuable local knowledge had the service been removed from the Lincoln HQ. 51

Play at the Collection (Museum) Improvements have been made to the existing shop area to create an under 5’s learn to play area. In addition, changes to the café will provide an improved visitor experience. Stokes have been appointed to run and manage the cafe.

Energy Efficiency Working in partnership with District Councils, the County Council has passed the 10,000 mark for households that have benefited from HELP support for energy efficiency. Over 11,500 wall cavities or lofts have been insulated saving householders over £1 million on their energy bills.

Ever-rising energy costs are a constant worry to many residents, so do please take advantage of help from official offers.

Energy from Waste The county’s recycling rates are over 52%, but this still leaves some 165,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste with a landfill tax of £56 per tonne. This will rise to £80 per tonne over the next three years. The new Energy from Waste facility in North Hykeham should be fully operational by December 2013 saving Council Tax payers considerable sums of money. Five waste transport feeder stations are to be built around the county to ensure that the waste facility operates efficiently.

Lincolnshire operates 13 household waste recycling centres, but due to cut-backs some will have reduced opening hours.

The site at Great Northern Terrace in Lincoln will not be affected.

Superfast Broadband Council officers are having informal discussions with potential suppliers of superfast broadband. £14.3 million in funding has already been secured, plus £10 million of County Council funding which should provide 90% coverage in Lincolnshire by 2015 - benefitting both businesses and residents.

LIVES Responders - Across Lincolnshire and in Nettleham LIVES (Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Services) are a countywide organisation, which has been in existence since the mid 1970’s.

Initially the scheme consisted of like-minded doctors willing to give up their time to provide immediate medical assistance, alongside the emergency services, to calls such as road traffic accidents.

In 1999 the Chief Executive of the Ambulance Trust invited LIVES to establish a First Responder Service for suspected heart attack victims. It was envisaged that this would enable an equality of service to be extended across the rural areas within the county of Lincolnshire, which is the second largest county in England, but in some places is very sparsely populated.

There are almost 90 groups across Lincolnshire with 640 Responders, volunteering their skills and time to support their local areas.

You may have seen in the local press just before Christmas 2011 that LIVES First

Responders were called to their 100,000th emergency call-out. The call was to a patient suffering from chest pains in Thimbleby, near Horncastle, who spent just a few days in hospital before being discharged. This is a huge achievement for all of the volunteers who give up their time to administer life-saving first aid to sick and injured people in their community.

Steve Hyde, a First Responder in his own community, as well as the fundraising, marketing and recruitment manager based at LIVES headquarters in Horncastle, commented: “Attending 100,000 call-outs is a big thing for us. It really pushes home how important LIVES is as a charity for a county as rural as Lincolnshire and it means that we’ve gone out and treated 100,000 people. The First Responders are the ultimate volunteers for their community. We always say to them after their initial training period that someone, at some point in their community, will be extremely grateful they went through the training.”

Here in Nettleham, we are about to celebrate our own milestone. 4 March 2012 represents the 10th anniversary of the First Responders team being called out to medical emergencies around the village.

Although we haven’t got exact figures going back to the very first days, we average about 100 call-outs per year.

During 2009 we had 119, in 2010 there were 106 and in 2011 there were 89 call-outs. So I suspect that we have already responded to over a thousand emergencies around the village.

Although our responders are trained in a number of techniques, it is chest pains, breathing difficulties and cardiac arrest that are particularly time critical, with the first 8 minutes being the crucial time for assistance. The average response time across the county and in the village is about 4 minutes or so.

Over the last ten years we’ve had twenty-five Responders in the group and currently have thirteen, with several more undergoing training.

Nettleham Art Group Art & Craft Sale Nettleham Art Group held its 5th annual pre-Christmas Art & Craft Sale in the Old School on Saturday 5 November. Unlike the July Exhibition, which displays new paintings completed during the previous year, this November sale is an opportunity for members to sell any of their paintings and prints, birthday and Christmas cards, craft work, art books and materials.

Admission is free and refreshments are served.

The event was again successful with over one hundred visitors between 10.00am and 1.00pm. Greetings cards and books in particular proved popular this year, as did the provision of tea, coffee and biscuits.

A great variety of craft items were on sale such as embroidery, pin cushions and needle cases, Christmas decorations, jewellery and decorative mobiles. Profits from the sale enabled the Group to donate ÂŁ100.00 to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.

Thanks as always to all those members and friends who helped on the day. The popular Art Group, now in its eighth year and with 40 members, will be holding its annual exhibition in the Old School in July, from Friday the 13 to Sunday 15. Storybook Days are Growing!

In a past edition of Nettleham News we introduced our new business: Storybook Days. We are pleased to say that nearly two years on we are still going and expanding our creative workshops to new venues, organisations and partnerships.

Sarah Hollamby and Leanne Taylor, both residents of Nettleham and both having over 11 years of experience in education and the arts, had the idea of bringing children’s stories to life through creative and practical workshops.

Each school holiday we run full-day workshops in the village at Unit 5, 22 The Green, Nettleham, based on popular children’s stories. All the days are carefully planned to include drama, story-telling, music, dance, crafts and games suited to the age of children attending the day. They allow the children to become immersed in the stories and to enter the fictional world through fun and play. In this day and age when stories and make-believe can sometimes be lost to technology and television, our workshops allow space for all primary age children to once again enjoy books.

We have rid the village of the giants with the help of the BFG, made our own ‘purple hand gang’ with Horrid Henry, floated our boats down the Beck (some not terribly successfully) as we imagined what it would be like for Michael the main character of Michael Morpurgo’s popular book ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and we even found out ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ in Vicars’ Wood. In November we launched a series of toddler sessions in Nettleham to encourage our little ones to love books as much as we do. Latest dates, books and prices for these sessions can be found on the website.

We have been so excited by how the work has extended to include school workshops, children’s parties, festivals and libraries.

We have worked in several schools across Lincolnshire, carried out workshops at a variety of festivals, such as Wolds Words, Beam! Children’s Festival and been involved in the Igniting Ambitions Cultural Oympiad project. We delivered a workshop based on Enid Blyton’s ‘The Magic Far Away Tree’ at The Usher Art Gallery linked with their Charter of the Forest exhibition and Hansel & Gretel at Lincoln Drill Hall.

We have created personalised parties for several children based on their favourite books including Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Fantastic Mr Fox, these have all been very well received and offer a creative alternative for your child’s special day.

2012 looks to be just as exciting. We are pleased to be working with Lincolnshire County Council in several libraries across the county linking with the Hidden Heritage exhibitions and hopefully will also be forming links with the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

In January 2012 we discovered that Storybook Days have been nominated for a National Award: Whats on 4 Kids in two categories; Best Local Activity for children aged 5 to 12 and Best New Activity for 59

Welcome to New Residents December welcomed two new residents to Nettleham. Shirley and Sean are the new landlords of the White Hart and bring with them lots of enthusiasm and ideas to make this historic pub something for everyone.

“As history lovers we were totally captivated by the buildings past and Georgian architecture” says Sean.

“Although we are aware the building was formerly Nettleham’s court house and gaol, we would welcome any information and photographs to enable us to compile and put on display within the pub a panel explaining all about its past.”

Although the White Hart has changed hands quite frequently in recent years and, perhaps been a little neglected, Shirley and Sean aim to be here for the long term and have many ideas to make the pub all it used to be. “First and foremost it is a pub for everyone, including families with children” says Sean. “We know the lounge bar has recently been used as a restaurant, but we want people to know that we are ‘a pub with terrific food.’ People are welcome to come into the lounge bar and have a drink and not feel that they have to eat.”

If you fancy a game of pool, or would like to put some music on our juke box the main bar is for you but, if not, the lounge bar is a quieter alternative, where you can have a drink and good conversation.

Shirley and Sean have worked hard since they arrived to get both the kitchen and

bar to an excellent standard and already, many compliments on both the quality of beer and food are being received which they find really heartening and helps to keep their enthusiasm fired. “We work on a simple principle” says Shirley, “Serve what you would like to be served.”

Shirley and Sean have many connections with World War Two Museums in Lincolnshire including The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre where Sean is an aircrew member and Safety Officer on Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’. “To have the chance to educate people on Lincolnshire’s proud wartime contribution, crew a Lancaster bomber and, most importantly, remember those brave airmen and women who worked both on the ground and in the air is an absolute honour and a privilege.” Says Sean.

Many special events are planned at the White Hart for 2012 including a large 1940’s weekend on 12/13 May to coincide with the anniversary of the famous Dam Busters raid, which took off from nearby RAF Scampton on 16 May 1943. Original wartime vehicles will be displayed in the car park, along with uniform and equipment, talks, displays, demonstrations and a 1940’s dance in the pub on the Saturday evening. Wartime rationing food will be served along with many other activities to get involved in. It certainly looks like Shirley and Sean are keen to be involved in the life of the village and we wish them well for their future at the White Hart.

A Grave Mistake

As a bagpiper, I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a remote cemetery in the country.

I was not familiar with the area, got lost and finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral people had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. Only the diggers were left around the partially-filled grave.

I apologised to the men for being late and went to the graveside. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers gathered around as I played my heart out for this man with no family and friends. I played ‘Amazing Grace’ and the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and headed back to my car.

Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say: “I never seen nothin’ like that before and I’ve been puttin’ in septic tanks for over twenty years.”

Volleyball volunteers wanted Volunteers are being encouraged to take part in a major volleyball event in April.

What medicine can help you lose weight, sleep better, reduce aches and pains, is cheap and has no negative side effects?

Exercise.

People in Lincolnshire who have medical conditions which may benefit from exercise are being encouraged to speak to their local GP about what’s on offer in their area.

Every district in Lincolnshire offers Exercise Referral; a programme funded by NHS Lincolnshire and the Health & Wellbeing Fund, and managed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

Exercise Referral is a 12-week programme of low, or no, cost physical activity with your very own exercise programme, tailored to improve your quality of life.

Sarah Ferneyhough, Physical Activity Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Around 3,000 people are being referred to the programme every year; receiving guidance and support to become more active. Participants are eligible for subsidised rates at leisure centres, as well as lots of information on how to improve their health.

“We want to raise awareness of Exercise Referral so that more people in Lincolnshire can ask their GP about how it can benefit them.”

Exercise Referral programmes currently take place at 19 facilities across the county with on-going programmes, so participants can start at any time.

One member of the Exercise Referral programme said: “The staff were very supportive and encouraged me; I now have a positive outlook on life.”

To be eligible to take part in an Exercise Referral scheme, participants must have a medical condition such as: coronary heart disease; cardiovascular disease; stroke; high blood pressure (hypertension); high cholesterol and risk factors for CHD; Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; obesity; asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; depression; anxiety; stress or other mental health problems; learning disabilities; osteoarthritis; musculo-skeletal problems, such as joint or back problems; overweight pregnant women; cancer; epilepsy or degenerative diseases.

Celebrate the Games locally People in Lincolnshire can celebrate the London 2012 Games by becoming a Local Leader.

London 2012 has launched Local Leaders; an opportunity for people across the UK to plan celebrations for the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

The programme provides access to ideas, hints and tips; help with organising events and guides and templates for any celebration.

Volleyball England is offering the opportunity to be involved in the Super 8 Play Offs and National Cup Finals, featuring some of the best volleyball players in England. The events take place on Saturday and Sunday 14/15 April, and Saturday and Sunday 289/29 April, at the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering, Northamptonshire.

Volunteers will be needed for a variety of jobs and no volleyball experience is needed. Health Walks in Lincoln Walking is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get involved in physical activity, and there are numerous Health Walks being led both in Lincoln and the surrounding area.

Trained volunteer Health Walk leaders lead free short walks to include everybody regardless of ability, in a friendly and sociable environment, in and around the local town and countryside.

Sarah Ferneyhough, Physical Activity Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Health Walks are becoming increasingly popular, with almost 3,000 people in Lincolnshire now regularly attending walks. They are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve your health, and are a great way to meet new people and have fun.”

Health Walks are funded by NHS Lincolnshire, which means that they are free to attend. Lasting between 45 minutes and 1 hour 20 minutes, they are suitable for beginners and will be led by trained volunteers.

The Meeting A story by Harry Carter Kerry was, like most girls of 16, full of energy, lots of friends and well-liked. Also, like most girls, she regarded her mum as a killjoy, always objecting to what Kerry wanted, always stipulating rules in the house, always giving curfew times to be back at home. It was enough to drive anyone to anger and frustration, Kerry thought.

Evening times in the middle of the week were when conflicts arose. Homework to be done, chores to be completed; radio, computer, television, all to be off at a certain time. How was she to keep up-to-date on Facebook or Twitter if she couldn’t be talking on them until she was tired, rather than at the dictation of her mother. Of course, it came to a head with a row between them and Kerry, thinking that enough was enough, with anger and rage quickly packed a small bag.

“Where do you think you are going young lady?” said her mother, standing near the front door, her arms folded.

“Out, out of here... I’ve had enough I’m going to stay with friends.”

Kerry’s mind was on overdrive. She had made a commitment and she was going through with it.

“Don’t be silly Kerry. It’s dark and cold out tonight.”

“Don’t treat me like a little girl” - Kerry reached for the door and stormed out, walking quickly down the garden path and away into the darkness.

“Kerry! Kerry! Please come back Kerry.”

The shouting became more distant as Kerry still angrily marched on and on. Eventually she came to a halt at a wooden bench close to the west wing of the cathedral.

Sitting down she reached in her bag for her mobile.

I’ll phone Pauline - she’ll put me up, she thought.

Frantically searching, she finally concluded that, because of her mad dash out the house, she had left her mobile in her bedroom. She sat there for what seemed an eternal length of time, with tears welling up and running down her cheeks.

How far had she walked? It was cold and dark, she then became even more anxious realising she had no money either... she had walked for hours.

Her hands pushed hard into her pockets to keep them warm, she was suddenly aware of someone standing in front of her. A policeman!

He stood well over 6 feet tall and was looking down at her with a warm smile.

“Sorry miss, hope I didn’t startle you. You would think that my rather big feet would make me sound like an elephant when I’m walking” he chuckled.

He looked at her sympathetically and went on: “Rather lonely around here for you. Are you alright?”

“Yes”, she barely whispered, “I think so”. She felt rather foolish - here she was nearly a grown woman and thinking like a stupid child.

“Let me guess now”, the policeman said rather quietly. “Family problems?”

She volunteered the answer, her inner self thanking this friendly giant for being there just for the company. “Yes, my mum, she just gives me hassle all the time and I’ve had enough” “Ah, the arch-villain eh?” he chuckled again.

“They’re awful, mums - haven’t a clue. Always

nagging, making rules, forcing you to eat horrible food, making sure your homework’s done - the list is endless.”

“Exactly” she retorted, feeling that she was with a soulmate who knew what she was going through, even though he was a copper.

“Yep, my mum was exactly the same, six of us she brought up, always making sure we washed behind our ears, combing our hair, nagging about helping round the house, getting to school on time, oh! and she used to have an old slipper.”

Kerry looked up in horror, ”A slipper! What, to hit you with?”

“No, never used it on any of us, but it was there and we knew it was there, so it kept six unruly kids in check. Mind you, we never had much time as we were always doing something.”

Kerry was intrigued... “Did you go on Facebook?

Have you got a mobile? What sort is it?”

He chuckled again - it was so infectious that she felt like chuckling too. “Facebook? Mobile? No lass, we were always out. We would either be on the West Common watching the parachutes jumping out of barage balloons, down the river hitching a lift with the grain barges that came down from Hull, fishing for sticklebacks with a worm and a bit of cotton, Whittons Park with our model boats in the paddling pool or sweeping up leaves and taking them down to the allotment holders to get some pocket money.

We were kept busy, but at the end of the day we all ran home and there was mum in the kitchen getting tea ready. She made sure we washed our hands and listened to us all going on about the adventures we had had that day.

By the time bedtime came we were all dead beat and mum would tuck us in and give each of us a kiss before switching off the lights.” He chuckled again, “Raised us up all on her own she did.”

Kerry replied in a whisper “Yes, we just have our mum, dad died two years ago. I have two younger brothers.”

He smiled, “And being the oldest you no doubt have certain responsibilities to them as reminded by your mum?”

“Yes, but I don’t mind. She thought of her younger brothers both asleep - both oblivious to the events of tonight.

“You know all young ‘uns your age have a love-hate relationship with their mums and dads, but they love you dearly and that’s why they have rules.

It’s really to protect you and help you to grow up with responsibilities. The list is endless, but its all because of the love and care they have for you.”

“Is your mum still around?” she asked, sort of knowing he would say no as he was fairly old.

“Nay lass”, he laughed “Lost my mum years ago.

When she went it was then and only then that I realised that not only was she my mum, she was also my friend, my protector. We always hugged each other when things were difficult - that’s the way we were as a family. Always hugging - best medicine in the world.”

Tears were welling up in Kerry’s eyes and he looked into them. “Come on lass let’s walk home eh? Once you have been delivered I have to meet old Sarge.

We will then be like two mischievous young ‘uns

and hide in a doorway while we have a pipe or two.”

They both laughed. Kerry stood up and where before she was angry and upset, she was now filled with a loving anticipation of being home again.

They walked back along the footpath towards her home. Kerry did most of the talking. She spoke about her ambitions, her friends and boyfriend.

She also spoke about her mum - how she worked part-time, but was always there when she needed her. How she enjoyed their shopping trips together, how they both had the same sense of humour and how mum also had a very infectious chuckle just like him.

She could smell the aroma of pipe tobacco on his cape! Cape? Why did he have a cape on? She had seen photographs of policeman from years past wear them, but never today.

He looked down at her, realising she was staring at his cape. Sarge lets me wear it at night, then I can keep my hands in my pockets without anyone being the wiser”. He chuckled and so did she.

“Well”, she smiled, this is it.

“Okay lass, when you ring the doorbell and your mum comes to the door, just look into her eyes.

You will only see a lot of love... and don’t forget a hug?”

“I will”, she smiled and walked up the garden path and rang the doorbell. The door quickly opened and her mother was there with tears rolling down her face.

“Kerry, oh Kerry, I was sick with worry that you didn’t have your mobile.”

“I know mum, I forgot”. She leaned forward and put her arms around her mum’s shoulders and gave the biggest hug she could. Her mum was elated.

They went into the house, both crying with relief.

It was then that Kerry told her mum about the friendly policeman she had met and that they had chatted as he had walked her home.

Her mother went out, down the garden path and looked both ways but could see no one - just a damp mist covering the grass and paths. It was getting colder too, making the night very still.

She thought she could smell a pipe-tobacco aroma which seemed to follow her into the house.

Kerry was busy putting the breakfast plates out ready for morning.

“Kerry”, her mum said “Did this policeman have big feet?”

Kerry laughed. “Yes they were unusually big, but he had a fantastic chuckle, so infectious with a broad grin. Why?” she enquired.

“Oh nothing.” Her mother went upstairs to her bedroom where she opened a bottom drawer and took out a biscuit tin. Rummaging through the photographs of a bygone age, she pulled one out and stared at it. There was a policeman with a cape and huge feet grinning at the camera - it was a lovely grin too. Slowly she put the photograph back again. One day she would tell Kerry.

She went to the bedroom window, looked out to the clear sky and whispered lovingly: “Thanks grandad.”

The 2011 season was a transitional one for the cricket club, with changes both at playing and committee level.

The cricket club would like to express their thanks to Sunday 2nd team captain John Rice, who relinquished the reigns after 4 years of overseeing juniors introduced to senior cricket. Also to Paul Smith who stood down after 10 years of being the club treasurer, and finally to Chairman Chris Brown who, during his 4 years, oversaw the attainment of ‘Chance to Shine’ and ‘Focus Club’ status, ground improvements and the playing of cricket at the highest level in Lincolnshire.

At the AGM last November NCC welcomed Martin Connor as its new Chairman, ably assisted by Secretary David Wheatley and fixture secretary Dave Ranshaw.

The first team, playing under captain Dave Manby in the ECB, were always going to have a difficult season after the loss of six senior players from the team due to retirement and moving away from the area. This gave the opportunity for younger 2nd team players to experience cricket at the highest level in Lincolnshire, but lacking experience, it proved to be a steep learning curve to which they had to adapt in a short space of time. Even with the addition of new overseas player Dan Wright, a 25-year-old Australian opening batsman who also bowled, the young inexperienced team struggled against more senior opposition. Although they were relegated at the end of the season, the experience gained should help them develop this season.

The second team, under captain Martin Strawson, suffered in selection due to players promoted to the first team, and new younger players, the product of the excellent junior structure, were given the opportunity to prove themselves at senior level. Although finishing in the lower half of the table, valuable experience was gained which they should benefit from as they will all be a year older this season.

The Sunday 1st team, under a new young captain, Tom Dalton, with a blend of youth and experience, performed well in this competitive league, finishing mid-table.

A week later the priest calls the man and says: “I spoke to your wife on the telephone for three hours. You want my advice?”

The Sunday 2nd team, under Chris Dobson, used the season to introduce younger junior players to senior cricket, helped by the few regular senior players of the team.

Although finishing in the lower half of the table, this is the social side of cricket and an enjoyable season was had by all.

The man said yes and the priest replied: “Take the poison.”

Once again the club is fortunate in that it is provided with one of the best playing

Other social cricket events included the ‘Sponsors’ Day’, the ‘Geoff Clark’ family day and the annual popular junior tournament organised by Colin Woolfson and Russ Binnington. This is for U9 and U10 teams from around the area, with Nettleham’s U9 team managed by Phil Brown, and U10’s by Craig Cosgrove competing.

Youth teams continue to be the life-blood of the club with several players from the club selected to represent the county.

RB Camera Club From time to time, on the club’s programme, the event entitled “Show and Tell” appears - an opportunity for club members to bring examples of their own work, completely free of the restraints of the competition scene.

It’s a bit like “The Canterbury Tales” each episode reflecting to some extent not only the participant’s life-style, but also the particular preferred art form of photography. Needless to say, these evenings are rich not only in diversity of content, experience and opportunity, but also of the humour - and there is a great deal of that about, particularly where weather conditions are concerned. For example, at a recent “Show and Tell” evening a “Wet and Windy Lake District” was followed by a “Wet Weekend in Paris” which competed very strongly with a “Very Wet Venice”. An audio-visual of Whitby (who can’t respond to the ‘Heartbeat’ theme) was followed by a sequence of humorous graffiti (spotted on a visit to London) and one of our young members put us to shame with his developing (pun!) talent for working in the darkroom.

And so much more was there that evening, but... we explorers had to go searching for that elusive Nettleham Beck - wellies the order of the day, but at least recent downfalls meant there was more water to be spotted and after the Mill House there it was sandwiched between the backs of houses and the lake below the Police HQ. The next time you walk Washdyke Lane, take a look at the construction required to accommodate the stream and the road - I wonder how the Romans dealt with it?

Browse a Bit The first charity shop opened in Oxford in 1941, when several organisations started selling used goods, to raise charitable funds.

In the 1970’s, the shops were disorganised, and cluttered. Clothes, toys and books were piled on shelves and tables. There were no changing rooms for the customers and handwritten price tags on the goods, in no particular size or colour.

Nowadays, unpaid volunteers serve the customers. Although some people view charity shops as excellent places for a bargain, the managers are very particular about the condition of the donated goods.

Items are sorted carefully, by the staff, discarding anything damaged or stained.

These unwanted items are eventually disposed of at landfill sites.

We are drawn in by the attractive window displays, smart changing rooms and clothes on hangers, colour co-ordinated.

Spencer can be bought at a low price.

Hardback and paperback books in good condition are to be found on the shelves.

They retail at around £1.50 and reference books are a great find for college students.

The Heart Foundation has a large furniture shop in our town centre. There are good quality sofas, chairs, beds and also electrical goods, which have been tested before putting on display. Young couples who are setting up home, can browse the furniture before buying and then arrange with the shop for the goods to be delivered to their home. There is a charge of ten pounds for this service.

The Heart Foundation will only accept donations of furniture in reasonable condition. Sofas and beds must have the ‘fire risk’ guarantee ticket attached to them.

Over the last ten years, charity shops have improved their standards and give the High Street clothes stores a run for their money.

I live in a block of flats, and smile when I hear the words ‘Any old iron’, echoing from the small lorry which trundles around our area, collecting scrap metal.

In the days of my childhood in the 1950’s, a man with a horse and cart would collect this rubbish.

Many people, including elderly residents, do not have a car and this provides a free service for us all. They collect fridges, microwaves and other items from our doors and take them to a scrap metal site, and earn a small income.

As we are not allowed to throw certain items in our wheelie bins, this urges us to get rid of our rubbish in a reponsible manner, and not discard it in farmers’ fields or on the roadside.

Library News

A warm breeze ruffled my hair as I paid my entrance fee at the gate. Wensbury agricultural show is held every year in July.

A row of large tents loomed in the distance, as people began filing into the showground. I smiled as I watched parents with excited children dancing along holding hands, as they moved towards the stalls. An elegant chestnut horse trotted by, bringing with it the warm aroma of polished leather and hoof oil, to momentarily replace the mixture of candy floss and fried bacon that filtered across the showground, and made my mouth water.

A battered trailer advertising ‘George’s Racing Geese’, caught my eye and I glanced at the show programme. The geese were performing at ten o’clock in the main ring and I made my way across to a crowd of spectators. In the collecting ring several sturdy men, with border collies tugging eagerly on their leads, waited patiently for the geese to be unloaded.

The commentator’s voice boomed over the loudspeakers ‘Racing geese are about to perform’ and the dogs barked loudly in anticipation. I stood at the guy-ropes as the slim white geese were shepherded into the ring by a sturdy man. He wore a smart hacking jacket, trousers and battered cap on his unruly hair. I counted twenty lean

white geese with long legs and bright orange feet, they cackled loudly as the first collie dog entered the ring, with his owner close behind him.

Several cones were placed around the arena, each dog was to herd the feisty geese around them and into a pen in the centre of the ring. The handsome black collie with a white dash on his face, drove the geese in and out of the cones and into the waiting pen without any problems and loud applause echoed around the ring from the spectators.

A brown and white collie bounded into the ring panting with anticipation, as his owner, a red-haired boy, gazed around the ring. Suddenly one of the geese made an escape from the gaggle and disappeared under the ring ropes. The man in the hacking jacket chased after the bird, as the crowd laughed at their antics. Several minutes later he returned with the goose tucked under his arm. He skidded on a pile of horse dung and fell flat on his face, to the amusement of the crowd. Jumping to his feet, man and goose bowed elegantly to the crowd, and the bird was returned to the gaggle. The event was won by the red-haired boy, his dog gazing up at him as they collected their prize. By the end of the day, as the show came to an end, I realised I could not wait for the next summer to visit the show once more.

2011 was a year of big change for Nettleham library, the biggest change being the introduction of the RFID self service machines. We now feel that it allows us to spend more time talking and helping you when you need the help.

We were also redecorated and had a new layout. The final change was the departure of our colleague Michelle Vail who had worked in the library for many years and we all wish her well in her new post.

Our children’s Story Time will re-launch in March and we would love to see pre-school children, parents, grandparents and carers on the last Tuesday morning in March for stories, songs, rhymes and activities.

The library would like to set up a children’s reading group on either a Wednesday or Friday after school. Times to be arranged.

The more noteworthy events were the severe winds on the 6th and 12th and the heatwave towards the end of the month.

The month was generally mild with occasional unsettled spells and periods of warm, sunny weather.

It was frequently changeable, with strong winds, together with rain or showers, some heavy. On the 12th strong winds gusted over 46mph and caused some problems locally.

There was a remarkably warm spell during the first three days, with 26°C reached on the 1st and 3rd and 21°C on the 5th.

There was plenty of sunshine at times, especially during the last three days of the month, with practically clear skies on occasions. Some early mist and fog occurred which soon cleared however.

Temperatures on the 30th of the month reached over 25°C.

The only cooler spell was from the 18th to the 20th, with frost early on the 20th, but mild weather soon returned with 16°C being reached even on the 31st of the month.

From the 25th it became more unsettled generally, with thunder and lightning on the 25th and an overcast wet day on the 27th.

Changeable, breezy and mild weather dominated the last few days of the month.

Mostly cloudy, damp, misty and foggy weather prevailed until well into the second half of the month and it continued to be mild, 16°C being reached on the 3rd.

Some hazy sunshine occurred on occasions.

Most rain was light on a few days, although heavier rain occurred on the 4th. Fog became noticeably thick and persistent towards the middle of the month, especially on the 20th.

From the 23rd, a change to windier and unsettled weather, bringing frequent bands of passing rain or showers, some heavy and squally.

Winds were strong enough at times to cause problems. Interspersed were clearer interludes with some strong sunshine.

Temperatures through the month usually reached double figures and were often in the teens.
