Village Handbook & Directory In the centre of this edition of Nettleham News, you will find the ‘Nettleham Village Handbook & Directory’ as a centre pull-out supplement.

The next (winter) edition covers the Christmas period, so anything with a festive theme will be particularly welcome for inclusion in the magazine.

I have endeavoured to update all the information about changes to the entries which have been notified to me since the publication of the autumn 2010 edition, but directories of this nature all too quickly become out of date, so if there are any further changes, do please let me know.

Cheese Competition In this edition, you will find the third competition of the year which you can enter to win a pack of delicious seasonal cheeses from a local specialist supplier in Lincoln - The Cheese Society, one of our regular advertisers in Nettleham News.

Beckside Horse Chestnut I am saddened to see that the magnificent horse chestnut tree in All Saints churchyard, near Beckside, has once again come under attack from larvae of the Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner Moth. This would appear now to be an annual occurrence and there is practically nothing that can be done to avoid this infestation (see page 39).

Best Kept Village Competition 2011 Needless to say, I’m sure most readers, like me, will be very disappointed that we have been unable to progress further than Round 1 in this year’s Best Kept Village competition (see page 31 for the marks awarded and the comments of the judges).

This is a great shame, but at least we won it for three consecutive years until 2010 quite an achievement!

And Finally It just remains for me to thank all those who have sent in material for publication for this edition. Do please keep it coming it all helps to keep the magazine lively, interesting, informative and amusing.

Parish Council News News from the Parish Council The glorious summer moves seamlessly into autumn, and there’s a plethora of news to bring you from the Parish Council.

The Beck Wall behind the Old School Regular users of this footpath will have noticed that part of the wall has developed a tilt towards the Beck.

The Council has recently agreed a specification for the repairs, and will be seeking quotations for the work.

It will be necessary to close the footpath while the work is undertaken, and appropriate signs will be erected.

Groundwork Lincs have been instructed to lead this project and will investigate the necessary planning requirements, funding sources and co-ordination of the Skate Park Steering Group. Do please consider coming forward to join this important Group.

The Beck at Kingsway

Vandalism

The Council is aware of the excessive growth into the Beck from the field on the far side. Any enforcement action on potential flood risk is a matter for West Lindsey District Council, who have requested the landowner to undertake clearance work.

The Council continues to be the victim of random, but deliberate vandalism.

In June the Cricket Club suffered damage to a variety of their outdoor equipment and the Football Club stand continues to be an occasional target for pointless damaging acts.

Best Kept Village Competition Regrettably this year, after our three successive wins, we didn’t get beyond the first round. The main areas we were marked down on were the appearance of the Village Hall and its adjoining noticeboard, the poor state of the planters at the village boundaries (which are volunteer maintained) and the lack of car parking at Bill Bailey’s. In respect of this latter point, this has never been an issue and we are trying to ascertain if this falls within the remit of the competition guidelines. A table of the judges’ comments and points awarded in Round 1 appears on page 9.

Play Area Surfaces Following the partial failure of some of the play surface tiles at Larch Avenue, the Property Committee has agreed that the existing rubber tiles be overlaid with artificial grass-type matting. This will maintain the existing safe surface and eliminate the current problems.

The Bishops Palace Site A funding bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a £49,000 grant has been turned down, but following a meeting with HLF officers in Nottingham, it had been suggested that the bid be re-submitted for a lower sum. This has now been done and a revised bid submitted in the sum of £23,200. Discussions have been undertaken with the Church Commissioners’ solicitors regarding the future of the site after the 14-year lease. The Church Commissioners were not prepared to give any form of assurance (a ‘Letter of Comfort’) as this was not their policy; but as it was unlikely that anyone else would want to lease the site in the future with the restrictions in force, it was agreed to proceed with the lease.

Potential Skate Park The Parish Council has agreed to move this project to Stage 2, which will include the setting up of a Skate Park Steering Group of approximately 8-10 members, three of which will be 5

The Council has employed a regular security patrol at Mulsanne Park in an attempt to alleviate these problems, and it is not unusual for groups of teenagers to be moved on if they are on the park after dark. Some are reported as being no more than 13 years old.

The Village Hall The Council has secured a loan from the Public Works Loans Board to partially fund the replacement of the Village Hall roof. The remaining funding will come from the Village Hall Committee and Council reserves.

At the time of writing the tenders had been evaluated for the re-roofing and the contractor Johnson & Smith (Lincoln) Ltd of Branston Booths had been awarded the contract for this project. By the time this edition of Nettleham News is distributed, the roof works should be well under way and it is anticipated that the works should be completed by the middle of October 2011 (weather permitting).

Parish Council News (continued) The contractor has informed the Council that the re-roofing works can be undertaken without affecting the use of the hall.

Linelands As residents may be aware from media coverage, Lincolnshire County Council has decided that Linelands will close, unless a suitable private contractor can be found to take over the management of the care home. At the time of going to press no exact details had been provided to the Parish Council. However, the Parish Council has written to the Lincolnshire County Council Portfolio Holder to make representations about not only the proposals generally, but the way in which the staff at the care home have been treated in the consultation process.

Trees Some overdue clearance has taken place at Riverdale, where significant growth of ivy and trees were beginning to cause concerns as to the eventual stability of the trees and consequential blocking of the Beck.

This has had the effect of opening up the area, which has unfortunately met with mixed views in the locality.

However, it will ensure that the underplanting of hazel, thorn, wild rose and guelder rose will now be able to make much better growth and ultimately result in a much more attractive environment.

Planning Matters The Council continues to comment on Planning Applications and, wherever possible, takes on board and passes on to WLDC relevant representations received. Councillors regularly attend West Lindsey District Council meetings to emphasise the Council’s views where objections are being raised.

Nettleham Handbook The Council has agreed to fund the publication of the Nettleham Handbook & Directory, the successor to Nettleham Now. The 12-page publication, which is included as a centre pull-out supplement in this edition of Nettleham News, provides information on local businesses, amenities and organisations.

Grants to Local Organisations This was mentioned in the previous edition of Nettleham News, following which the Council has now formalised its process under which local groups can apply for small grants to assist with their activities. Full details are available from the Clerk. Examples of organisations helped over the last year include Nettleham LIVES, Lincoln & Lindsey Blind Society, Age UK Tuesday Coffee Morning and Dial-a-Ride.

The Parish Council was very sad to learn of the sudden death of Tim Walker. Tim had recently retired from a large legal firm in Lincoln and had been very helpful to the Parish Council with advice regarding legal matters.

His helpful approach to residents in the village was greatly appreciated and he will be sadly missed.

Winter Precautions Just a reminder that, following the problems of last year, a number of arrangements have been put in place to help alleviate difficulties in seriously adverse weather conditions. In the Spring 2011 edition of Nettleham News the Council appealed for volunteers to assist with snow clearance and other general assistance around the village. We received only one response to this appeal and would again request for volunteers to assist with this important task.

Letters from Readers Old Photographs of Nettleham Nettleham News: summer 2011: page 51 I gave the picture of our cottages to my friend whose mother still lives in the village (Rose Mary Brown).

It was her father who was the cobbler in the hut in the wood.

She recalls that the land at the side of the church was owned by a man known as “Gentle” Smith, who was in charge of the Arboretum and lived in a house there.

Mr John Henry Wollerton (Mary Brown’s father) paid rent to Mr Smith for the shed until about 1933. She thinks that it was then pulled down.

She recalls the trees being covered in red may blossom. She also had the task of “drawing” the snowdrops from the wood, so Mr Smith could sell them, complete with their long stems, in a shop on Monks Road, Lincoln.

Nearer to the church was the entrance to the wood leading to Mr Norman Bowskill’s hut, where he lived until he and his brother won money on the pools and had the brick house built opposite the wood (Saracens cottage?)

30mph Signs on Deepdale Lane via email Although some might disagree, I am delighted by the repositioning of the 30mph sign further up Deepdale Lane.

Vehicles should now be travelling at a more sensible speed when they reach the village sign, but I suspect that I am not the only resident to find it hard to remember, especially when leaving the village.

For a quarter of a century I have been turning left out of All Saints Lane and accelerating up the slope past the white house, but of course I shouldn’t do this now because of the change in the signage.

I suspect that I am not the only older (or younger) resident who forgets this.

In my view, based on 34 years in the classroom, a big notice is actually less effective than the number ‘30’ in a circle repeated several times, rather like teaching a group of children their ‘times-tables’.

There are several telegraph poles and the dog-waste post as well where small discs could be installed on both sides so that people are reminded gently of the change in the 30mph speed limit.

A few smaller discs might be helpful all round.

Lions’ New Programme Lincoln Lions have launched their programme of events for the new Club year. The programme covers events that have proved very popular with the local public over the years, together with some brand new events.

A Happy Ending

Thoughtless Parking

My friend James Brown tells me that the wooden hut seen in the top photograph on page 51 of the summer 2011 edition of Nettleham News was used by his maternal grandfather as a ‘cobblers shop’.

My faith in human nature was restored this week and I would like to tell you about it.

John Henry Wollerton vacated the shed in 1956 and, due to marital problems, moved his business to Market Rasen. He died in that area in 1960.

I took it to the Harlequin Centre in Watford to get a new battery put in and at the shop a young man said: “Come back in half an hour, the cost will be £8.99”.

I returned in due course to collect my watch and he said: “No new battery needed, love - the winder had been pulled out which stopped the watch. All I did was push the winder back in!”.

My wrist-watch suddenly stopped in the middle of the day - it must be needing a new battery I immediately thought.

Walking around Nettleham, sadly one sees numerous instances of thoughtless and selfish parking by motorists.

Apart from the usual problems of congestion and obstruction in the area around The Green, I have also noticed an increasing number of people parking on the grass verge adjacent to the bridge across the Beck on High Street, despite the fact that space is available in the lay-by, just a few metres away.

“That’s all right” he said “no problem!”.

When it has rained, this verge, like any other area of grass, becomes much softer and will, if vehicles continue to drive onto it, be churned into a muddy morass and will eventually necessitate the Parish Council spending more public money on wooden bollards to prevent it.

I don’t know about ‘made my day’ - he made my whole week!

Please will motorists park sensibly and thoughtfully in the village!

I must admit, I was totally taken aback at his honesty, so I shook his hand and said: “Young man, you have made my day!”.

Deepdale Lane 30mph Signs Repositioned Having campaigned for almost two-and-a-half years, the 30mph speed limit signs on Deepdale Lane have finally been re-positioned, extending the village safety zone.

The 30mph signs are now located 250 metres nearer to the A46, thereby extending the speed restriction safety zone to embrace the entrance to the new commercial development.

Our thanks go to the residents of Deepdale Lane who supported our campaign, the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership who provided helpful advice and the Highways Division of Lincolnshire County Council who finally re-positioned the signs.

An additional sign, (not requested by the Parish Plan Committee) has been positioned to warn drivers of the extended speed limit zone. Let us hope that this will result in greater safety for the residents and users of Deepdale Lane.

All Saints Church Lead Stolen for the Second Time!

Sadly, our historic parish church of All Saints, in the centre of the village Conservation Area, has become the victim of lead thieves for the second time in recent months.

The audacity of these unscrupulous thieves in stripping lead from the church roof is beyond belief. They must be a highly organised gang with a vehicle, at least one ladder and the appropriate tools to enable them to carry out the removal of the cumbersome lead from the roof.

Located in the very heart of the village, yet oddly not overlooked by any nearby properties (except that of the Editor!), the chances of someone passing by, even in the early hours of the morning when the crime presumably took place, must be relatively high.

Removing the lead would not be an easy task either - it is an extremely heavy material to lift and manipulate and it is astounding that nobody saw or heard a thing during the course of the theft!

We are not alone - other churches, both locally and nationally, have had lead stripped from their roofs and its high time that the Government take action to tighten the regulations relating to dealing in scrap lead, copper, etc, to make it impossible to dispose of any illegally acquired scrap metal, from whatever source.

Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Programme of Events

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month from October to June in the Large Hall of The Old School. Meetings start at 7.30pm and we book a variety of guest speakers throughout the season. We also organise occasional outings to places of interest. New members and visitors are always most welcome.

Membership also entitles you to use the Garden Store. You will also receive a notice each month giving details of the next guest speaker, as well as other items of interest.

Where and when will I find the NGA Garden Store?

It is located near the Village Hall and operates on Saturday mornings 9.00am 10.00am from March to November.

You can purchase all your gardening needs (compost, fertilisers, canes, trays, weed and bug killers, etc) at excellent prices.

Annual Show Please don’t forget that on Saturday 3 September 2011 our Annual Show takes place in the Village Hall.

It’s open to everyone (you don’t have to be an NGA member) and you can enter fruit, flowers, vegetables, flower arrangements, house plants, cookery, crafts, photography and more! Children are encouraged to enter and have their own special classes, but can also enter any of the adult classes.

If you didn’t enter anything in this year’s show, promise yourself that you will do so next year!

The Nettleham boundary planters are once again blooming, thanks to the generous attention given by Rudie Bertin of Rudie’s Roots Nursery.

The French Go to the Dogs!

Members of the Nettleham Twinning Association entertain their French guests at a ‘Street Party’ themed evening at Reepham & Cherry Willingham village hall

It was a completely new experience for our French friends, and also for many of the Nettleham contingent, when one of the highlights of this year’s five-day visit by our twinners from Mulsanne was an evening at Nottingham Greyhound Racing Stadium.

We enjoyed a very pleasant dinner overlooking the greyhound track, and for the punters, some exciting finishes as the dogs whizzed past below us.

There were even a few winners!

As usual the main point and pleasure of their visit was renewing contact with our friends ‘en famille’, but a full programme of events and visits, combined with fine weather, made their five-day visit, beginning on Easter Saturday, specially enjoyable and memorable.

Although a few days in advance of the Royal Wedding, the programme began with a ‘Street Party’ themed evening at Reepham & Cherry Willingham village hall, with the venue gaily festooned with colourful bunting, flags and Royal Wedding decorations. Music by the Wilkos band accompanied a buffet supper and dance evening.

The main outing was a visit to Chatsworth House in the Derbyshire Peak District, where a French-speaking guide had been arranged for the tour of the house interior. The weather was perfect for a leisurely stroll round the magnificent gardens.

From Chatsworth our two coaches then set out for Nottingham and our visit to the Greyhound Racing Stadium.

Quite a long day out, but everyone agreed - a bit special.

Next on the Association’s programme of events in the village is a Race Night at the Village Hall on the 15 October.

More details will be announced nearer to the date, and we look forward to a very enjoyable evening.

The Association’s Annual General Meeting will be held the following week in the Old School on Thursday 20 October at 7.30pm, (wine and nibbles provided).

Arrangements are already in hand for next year’s visit to Mulsanne.

We are always seeking new members who would like to join in the fun and help develop the ‘entente cordiale’ between our two villages. We know that there are several people in Mulsanne who would like to find new twinners in Nettleham and participate in these enjoyable exchanges.

Lincolnshire Mediation Are you involved in a dispute you cannot resolve?

Many people will find themselves involved in a dispute at some point in their lives and such situations can often seem difficult, or impossible, to resolve.

It may be a dispute with a work colleague, a family member, or perhaps a neighbour.

Such disputes can be extremely stressful as once there is a conflict, matters often snowball and this can affect every part of a person’s life.

Sometimes people feel that court action may be the best way to resolve a dispute.

This may or may not be the case, as legal proceedings can be very expensive and time consuming, and, far from resolving any bitterness, it will often increase it.

Sometimes issues are not addressed or resolved and people either change jobs or move house, radically changing their lives.

According to a study of 2,000 homebuyers carried out by Halifax Home Insurance in March 2010, 1 in 3 people have had some

kind of a dispute with their neighbours and nearly 1 in 10 people claim to have moved house because of poor relations with their neighbours. Similarly, industrial tribunal claims rose to 236,000 last year a record figure and a rise of 56% on 2009, so disputes, or the inability to resolve disputes, appears to be a growing trend.

Mediation can be an alternative to legal processes, and it can be less stressful and a lot less expensive. Mediation puts those directly involved in control, and is designed to produce win-win situations wherever possible.

It is a voluntary and confidential process which helps all parties to be heard and to decide how they would like matters to move forward. Agreements reached in mediation are likely to remain in place, even though they are not legally binding, as they are solutions to which each party has mutually agreed, rather than having something imposed upon them.

If you are in dispute with a neighbour, or a colleague at work, you can do something positive about this. If it is a neighbour issue, you can contact your local anti-social behaviour team and they will work with you to try to resolve the situation and may refer you for mediation. The mediation is likely to be carried out by Lincolnshire Mediation who are a not-for-profit organisation with a team of experienced mediators, offering a range of mediation services. It’s not too late to Reduce Phosphate The Environment Agency is conducting a number of surveys of Lincolnshire’s watercourses.

Although these are wonderful places for wildlife and people, one of the problems they face is that there are too many nutrients in the water.

Excess nutrients, particularly phosphate, lead to algae growth and poor water quality. Algae prevents light reaching lower levels in the water and uses up oxygen. This causes a decline in the health of the water environment.

Where phosphate comes from The phosphate entering our rivers and other watercourses comes from many sources, including sewage treatment and agriculture. Several initiatives are underway to encourage farmers to reduce these problems.

Phosphate is also added to laundry detergents to soften the water and to hold dirt in the wash water.

Choose environmentally-friendly brands with no phosphate at all: They’re out there on the shelves if you look for them. Private sewage treatment plants should be well maintained and working effectively.

Small private sewage treatment plants, while still treating sewage adequately, allow phosphate to pass into ditches and rivers. It may only be a small contribution compared to other sources, but reducing this source will help our watercourses.

Water used for washing by people on board boats goes straight into the rivers. This means the cleaning products have a direct impact on the water environment.

Use less detergent: The amount of detergent you need to use depends on the hardness of the water in your area and how dirty your laundry is.

Remember last December?

Extra green bins must be paid for Residents throughout West Lindsey who are using more than one green garden waste bin could soon be facing an additional bill.

When the council’s popular Triple Bin refuse collection system was introduced almost two years ago, everyone in the district became entitled to have one green bin emptied for free. Additional bins could be provided, but there would be a charge.

But now the Council has been alerted to the fact that some properties are leaving out more than one green bin for collection, even though no payment has been made for additional bins.

Waste Services Manager Glyn Pilkington said: “Letters are going out to residents explaining that additional green bins have to be paid for at the current charge of £27.90 a year, or the bin will have to be returned to us.

“We appreciate that some householders may have been receiving the service unknowingly. For example there may have been two green bins at the property when new occupiers moved in, or perhaps an extra bin may even have been inadvertently delivered to the property when we first introduced the Triple Bin scheme.

“The reason for the extra bin being there is really not the point. What we are trying to do is make sure that we are fair to everyone who is paying for an extra bin and to do this we are asking for a payment from everyone who has more than one green bin, or it will have to be returned to us,” said Mr Pilkington.

The letter to residents tells householders that if they want to continue using the extra bin they should call West Lindsey District Council’s Customer Service Team on 01427 676676 to arrange for payment to be made.

If the Council does not get any response to its letters, it will assume that people want to keep the extra bin and an invoice will be sent out.

Be prepared for the winter ahead!

The law on clearing snow and ice from public spaces There is no law stopping you from clearing snow and ice on the pavement outside your property, pathways to your property or public spaces.

If an accident did happen, it’s highly unlikely that you would be sued, as long as you: ❄ are careful ❄ use common sense to make sure that you don’t make the pavement or pathway clearly more dangerous than before People using areas affected by snow and ice also have responsibility to be careful themselves.

Tips and advice on clearing snow and ice ❄ Start early - it’s much easier to clear fresh, loose snow compared to compacted ice that has been compressed by people walking on it ❄ Don’t use hot water - this will melt the snow, but may replace it with black ice, increasing the risk of injury ❄ Be a good neighbour - some people may be unable to clear snow and ice on paths from their property ❄ If shovelling snow, think where you are going to put it so that it doesn’t block paths or drainage channels ❄ Make a pathway down the middle of the area to be cleared first, so you have a clear surface to walk on ❄ Spreading some salt on the area you have cleared will help stop ice forming table salt or dishwasher salt will work, but avoid spreading on plants or grass as they may be damaged by it ❄ Pay particular care and attention to steps and steep gradients

Mr Pilkington added: “People who want to return the additional green should also call the Customer Service Team and we will arrange free collection.”

Waste Collection Changes Garden waste collections in West Lindsey will be suspended from November until the end of February 2012, helping the council to save a total of £168,000.

Prior to the decision, the council consulted with members of West Lindsey’s Citizens’ Panel where more than 850 responded to a recent survey.

Residents are now being encouraged to consider composting their garden waste or take it to their local household waste recycling centre (HWRC).

There will also be a restructure of the refuse and recycling collections from the start of November 2011. This may mean a change of collection day for some residents.

New waste collection calendars will be delivered to all homes in West Lindsey during October and residents are asked to read their new calendars carefully to see how the changes may affect them.

The changes are aimed at giving local people better value for money by making collection rounds more cost-effective and also reducing carbon emissions.

Waste Services Manager, Glyn Pilkington, explained: “During the winter months there is a dramatic reduction in the amount of garden waste collected. We apologise for any inconvenience and are here to answer any questions from residents.”

Insurance Check When you are having work done on your property by a builder, roofer or other tradesperson, it is always wise to check if those doing the work are properly insured.

He sued the homeowner, claiming that she had ‘exercised control’ over his work (making her responsible for his injury under Health & Safety legislation) and that she had refused to pay for him to do the work safely.

A recent case shows winning a case against an uninsured tradesperson can involve much stress and anxiety, with the possibility of major expense in the event of losing the case.

The court disagreed, ruling that the man was working under the control of the builder - who was not insured.

However, had the homeowner insisted that he was insured, the whole situation would have been far more straightforward and stress-free for her.

If you find yourself in a similar position to hers, be sure to involve a solicitor early in proceedings.

In this instance, a builder hired a casual labourer to help work on a house; when this man needed to access a flat roof, he asked the homeowner if he could access it via a window. She refused and, while climbing a ladder, he fell.

Dave and Fred were fund-raising for their club and saw an advertisement in the newspaper for a donkey at a local farm, so they bought it for £100 and decided to raffle it.

The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day, but the following morning the farmer telephoned and said: “Sorry, chaps, I have some bad news - the donkey died suddenly last night.”

Dave replied: “Well just give us our money back.”

The farmer said: “I’m sorry, I can’t do that, I’ve already spent it.”

They said: “OK then, just bring us the dead donkey.”

The farmer replied: “What in the world are you going to do with a dead donkey?”

They said: “We’re going to raffle him.”

The farmer said: “But you can’t raffle a dead donkey!”

Dave said: “Of course we can - we don’t need to tell anyone it’s dead!”

A couple of weeks later, the farmer ran into Dave and Fred at the local grocery store and asked: “How did you get on with the raffle for that dead donkey?”

They said: “It went just great - we sold 500 tickets for £2.00 apiece and made a profit of £998.”

The farmer said: “Yes, but didn’t anyone complain?”

Dave said: “Well, the guy who won got rather upset, so we gave him his £2.00 back.”

Dave and Fred are now working for the Government.

Nettleham Medical Practice Incorporating Cherry Willingham Surgery New Telephone System The new telephone system has now been installed and is generally working very well.

We experienced the expected ‘teething problems’ in the first couple of weeks, so thanks for your patience during this time.

We are noticing that a lot of telephone calls are received at the practice between 8.00am and 8.30am. May I remind patients that the appointment lines for all routine appointments don’t open until 8.30am, and only emergency calls are accepted from 8.00am.

Private Forms & Reports Fees for insurance forms, “Fitness to Participate” letters and other non-NHS work are available from reception. Please hand these forms to reception (not one of the GPs) and also ensure that you have completed all of the claimant’s section of the form, including the consent and declaration sections, as failure to complete

these parts will result in the GP being unable to complete the form and create an unnecessary delay.

We ask for a minimum of 7 working days for completion of private forms (although at busy times of year we may need longer).

The practice will contact you when the paperwork is completed and ready for collection. The fee must be paid by cheque, or cash, on collection of the form.

Monthly Early Closure for Training In order to enable our doctors and staff to be kept up to date, Nettleham surgery will be closed for training at 1.00pm on the following afternoons: Tuesday 20 September 2011 Tuesday 18 October 2011 Tuesday 15 November 2011 Tuesday 13 December 2011 Emergency help is still available by calling freephone 111.

Flu Vaccinations Programme We hope to commence our flu campaign towards the end of September.

Following the success of our Saturday morning flu clinics, we shall again be running our flu clinics on various Saturday mornings throughout October at both Nettleham and Cherry Willingham surgeries. We will be providing limited Thursday evening clinics at Nettleham for those patients who genuinely can not attend on a Saturday.

Vaccination is available for patients who fit one of the criteria listed below: Aged 65 or over; have chronic heart disease; have chronic respiratory disease (including asthma when regularly using an inhaled steroid); have chronic liver disease; have chronic renal disease; have diabetes; have suppressed immune systems; are a carer; have multiple sclerosis; currently pregnant.

Please contact either surgery from the middle of September to book an appointment in one of the flu clinics. There is no need to wait until you receive a letter. If you fit into one of the criteria listed above, please contact the surgery to make an appointment.

Bingo!

A man goes to the doctor feeling unwell.

The doctor checks him over and says: “Sorry, I have some bad news, you have Yellow 24, a really nasty virus. It’s called that because it turns your blood yellow and you usually only have 24 hours to live.

There’s no known cure, so just go home and enjoy your final precious moments on earth”.

So he trudges home to his wife and breaks the news. Distraught, she asks him to go to the bingo with her that evening, as he’s never been there with her before.

They arrive at the bingo and with his first card he gets four corners and wins £50.

Then, with the same card, he gets a line and wins £250.

Then he gets the full house and wins £1,000.

Then the National Game comes up and he wins that too, getting £250,000.

The bingo caller gets him up on stage and says: “I’ve been here 20 years and I’ve never seen anyone win four corners, a line, the full house and the National Game on the same card. You must be the luckiest man on Earth!”

“Lucky?” the man screamed. “Lucky?

I’ll have you know I’ve got Yellow 24.”

“Blimey” says the bingo caller, “You’ve won the raffle as well!”

Dead Certainty Bill and Joe are out in the woods hunting for rabbits when suddenly, Bill grabs his chest and falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are rolled back in his head.

Joe whips out his mobile phone and frantically calls 999.

He gasps to the operator: “I think my friend Bill is dead! What should I do?”

The operator, in a calm, soothing voice says: “Just keep calm and follow my instructions. First, let’s make sure he is dead.”

There is a silence and then a shot is heard.

Joe’s voice comes back on the line, “Okay... now what?”

Nettleham Woodland Trust On 20 September 2011, NWT will be celebrating its first five years, which have been far busier than anyone could have anticipated.

The 2008 planting at PC Wood is now thickening nicely and there could be news of other projects in the village in the coming months.

Only an hour from Nettleham, by public footpath, (or alternatively ten minutes by car, turning off the A46 just past the Scothern/Dunholme crossroads) Monks Wood continues to develop. Its Grand Opening took place on 27 May and was well attended by members of the local community, representatives of WREN, Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (who purchased the land) and the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust who now own it, and of course, members of the family of Dennis Monk, after whom the 15 hectares of new woodland are named.

A ceremonial ribbon was cut by Mrs Joy Monk and a young representative of the next generation at the main threshold, which is now enriched with a splendid set of information boards with text and photographs supplied by NWT members.

Events also included a school choir, teddy bears’ picnic, barbecue run by the scouts, ladies choir and laid-back group of guitarists. Even the weather was good!

But it hasn’t stopped there. Early in June, work started to provide a new dimension in the South Wood. The All Abilities Area is partially funded by the National Lottery and has a new 530m hard surfaced path from the car park as its centre-piece, allowing less mobile people to reach the woodland more easily. In the coming months land either side of the path will be

planted with trees and shrubs to provide a variety of sensory experiences - tactile, visual and olefactory - with advice from St Francis Special School and others.

Other features will include a new pond, benching, raised beds under the oak tree and tables suitable for wheelchair users and a willow tunnel. If any readers of Nettleham News and local businesses would like to sponsor any of these items, please do get in touch.

And as we go to press, we are expecting confirmation of an exciting collaboration with the Lincolnshire Co-operative as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations, which should lead to a lot of community activity in the February/March 2012 planting window next year.

Dr Ian Lechler Fond recollections of his father by his son John Lechler and some village residents Dr Ian Lechler was the local GP for about 25 years living in the Red House (now No 16) on The Green, with his surgery at the rear, until his untimely death in 1972 aged 56.

He was one of the last local doctors who did home visits, day or night, grouping them in his ‘visiting book’ on a page according to which village he would be in that day. He was rather like James Herriot of All Creatures Great and Small fame. His style was pastoral, people were important and not like cars for servicing as Dr Philip Elwood points out - himself a partner in the practice in my father’s final year and a friend with his wife, Norma, for several years previously. He also comments that Dad wasn’t hide-bound by the confines of medical practice.

Dad was ‘helped’ (if that’s the right word) by the resident district nurse and midwife, Nurse Heath - ‘Heathie’ as she was called, though never in public. There were a good number of children in the village that were ‘hers’. I remember one occasion when Nurse Heath came down our drive urgently summoning ‘the doctor’ to come and remove a broken hypodermic needle from someone’s arm she had been treating.

He went, of course, at her behest - you could do no other!

In talking with several older members of the village community today what is stressed again and again is my father’s outstanding Christian faith (together with my mother’s), his pastoral interest and care and his love of fast driving! His medical expertise was good too. Dr Mike Cooper (joined the practice in 1965) and they would go off together to post-graduate training days.

Dad had a series of small cars (red Minis and Wolsey Hornets) which he would drive at high speed between the villages doing his visits gaining the reputation of the Galloping Major. Mrs Woods was always amazed at how such a big and solid man (he was 6’ 1”) could fold up into such a small car! Once he drove very fast through the village green area and was spotted by the local police in their car. Having seen them he wound the window down and waved his stethoscope and they let him go on. He and Dr Cooper from time to time compared how fast they could go through the double bends just south of The Brown Cow (before they were later straightened).

“Together the two of them were great fun” says Mally Daubney. She was Dad’s secretary for many years and continued as practice manager until 2009. She tells of

appointment system then, you simply waited your turn hoping that the Mini was in the drive, indicating that at least the doctor was in the house and the wait would not be too long. Her husband, George, was the local milkman and in token of his appreciation of Dad’s work he gave a small silver shoe from his wedding cake to my parents.

the day when a particularly unkempt patient came into the surgery at the Red House who Dad told to go away again and not return until he’d had a bath. Dad could be very direct if necessary. As an employee and a young person, Mally was somewhat in awe of him, but she talks of my Dad as being very kind, always professional and with a great sense of humour.

The Daubney family were very aware of my parents’ Christian faith. Dad would pray with his patients from time to time and point them to the Bible. On a number of occasions Ralph and Dolly Daubney recall Dad talking over deep spiritual issues with them both, opening his Bible and offering counsel and prayer there and then. His interviews with them led them into Christian faith, changing their lives radically in the late 1950s. Both my parents cared for them pastorally and they became good friends. Mrs Woods (our neighbour) also recalls Dad as doctor and friend. She talks of several people ‘piling into the Mini’ and being driven to a midweek church home-group. She comments that Dad always had time for you. Many Nettleham youngsters attended his Sunday afternoon Crusader Bible class.

Mary Bratley (nee Vickers) tells of the occasional time when Dad was called out of church on Sunday morning in Lincoln by the police in order to do an urgent call.

Malcolm Leaning told me that “Your Dad was a Christian right through. He really lived it and began the dynasty of Christian doctors in the practice.” When Billy Graham visited the UK, Dad arranged a coach to take interested people to a rally in Hull. Mrs Margaret Frith (now 89) was one who went. She was very grateful for his treatment of her father, who died of cancer. Her comment is “There was no-one like him, he was one of the best.” She recalls the small surgery at the rear of the Red House with its waiting room and hard chairs. Mrs Frith says that there was no 32

Professional informality was acceptable in those days. Dad did night visits wearing a polo necked sweater over his pyjamas, trousers and a pair of fur-lined shoes.

Someone I spoke to remembers that during the night they went down to the Red House for some attention and rang the doorbell. Dad got up, opened an upstairs window, talked quietly with the patient and then went downstairs, opened the door and gave them whatever was needed.

Malcolm Leaning remembers the evening when Dad, dressed in his highland gear including kilt, etc, called in on his unwell mother, Mrs Phyllis Leaning, who was herself a Scot. She was therefore delighted at such attention! He was actually en route to a New Year’s Eve party at the Lincoln Maternity Wing on St Giles.

One day Malcolm was waiting for Trott’s bus into Lincoln. Dad stopped his car and gave this young boy a lift into town and to the boy’s great surprise he noticed that Dad could steer the car with his knees only! On another occasion Mrs Golland recalls having a protracted labour in the Bromhead nursing home. Dad suggested that Mr Golland should go home rather than stay. After the birth of baby Jenny Dad drove home and on reaching the Golland’s house, got out walked across the garden, tapped on the window and announced through the glass that Mr Golland was the proud father of a daughter. Mr Golland remembers being given a relaxation demonstration by my Dad. He himself lay on the floor to demonstrate the technique. He comments that Dad “Was a deeply religious and lovely man.” Prescriptions in those days were left on a shelf down at the Red House and as you collected yours it was possible to read what others were due to collect. However Dad did most of his own dispensing himself in the early days, until Miss Strangward came.

After Dad’s passing away a memorial service was held in the village church.

A packed congregation gathered to hear eulogies and express appreciation for a wonderful local doctor, husband and father.

Fundraising: Spring Fayre Although the Carnival is usually the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Group, this year’s Spring Fayre has topped that record by a big margin. The Nettleham Ladies Club decided to donate the proceeds from the Fayre to Nettleham LIVES. Astonishingly they raised over £1,460, which they decided to round up to £1,500 and a cheque for this amount was received during June 2011.

Carnival Day for Nettleham LIVES Our ever-popular Teddy Bear Tombola was back, which delighted old and young alike. We had some very generous donations of teddies.

Business was even brisker than normal and kept Mavis and Mandy very busy. They were ably assisted during the afternoon by Dominique, Sue, Shelagh and Diane. One lucky customer bought 5 tickets and won 4 lovely teddies!

Meanwhile, Brian, David, June, Marcus and Stuart were kept busy on balloon duty - we actually managed to sell a staggering 433 balloons! We had two pre-selling days outside the Co-op on the run-up to the Carnival, but still managed to sell over 250 balloons on the day.

David Herbert was also kept busy with our latest efforts to recruit some new Responders, we had several people approach us and we are hoping that they will be joining us in the coming weeks.

Our sincere thanks go to everyone who visited the stand and supported us so magnificently.

The First and Intermediate Responders could not operate the service on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis, without the generosity of residents and local businesses. The Carnival remains a key fund-raising event for the group each year.

This year, Shelagh sent the balloons on their way just after 4.00pm. Last year the furthest travelling balloon reached Sweden - we’ll let you know the winners in the next edition of Nettleham News. Although thanks must go to everyone involved, I’d like to particularly thank Mandy and Mavis, our very hard working fund raisers, as well as everyone who helped out on the day, or behind the scenes.

I was absolutely amazed at the overwhelming success of the event - everything on sale was so reasonably priced and such good value. This was surely a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of those involved from the Ladies Club in making the Fayre such a success.

Although we sent a thank you letter to the Chair, I would like to re-iterate our thanks to the ladies for their kindness and generosity - we really couldn’t continue to provide basic life saving support in emergency situations in the village without our supporters.

She later called upon her nursing and caring experiences and joined St Francis School in Lincoln as a volunteer Teaching Assistant. She also worked at Nettleham Junior School, initially on a voluntary basis, to help with literacy training. She gave up the role at St Francis about four years ago as her hours increased at Nettleham and she became a full-time Teaching Assistant there, working alongside seven other Assistants. Her role is mainly involved in one-to-one work with special needs children.

She has worked with some fantastic youngsters helping to build their confidence and skills and finds the work very rewarding.

Why did you become involved in LIVES? “When I worked at St Francis, I met Kay Horner and she ‘recruited me’. I remember mentioning that I had a free day on Wednesdays and Kay knew the very thing to keep me busy.

I explained that I couldn’t become a Responder immediately, as the girls were still quite young then, so I got involved with LIVES as a fund raiser/helper - which I still do whenever I can.

I completed the necessary training back in 2006 and have been responding ever since.”

What do you gain from being a Responder?

“I’ve always enjoyed doing things to help other people and that’s what I get from being part of Nettleham LIVES. I also thoroughly enjoy the social aspect and have made some good friends.”

Meet the Team: Shelagh Carter ‘First Responder’ Shelagh has been involved in the group for about eight years and has lived in the village for twelve. Her dad was in the forces and so moved around quite a lot when she was growing up, including spending some time in Belgium.

She is one of six children, including two sets of twins. She and her siblings went to boarding school for a number of years. When she left school, she originally wanted to be a nurse, but after starting a pre-nursing course, she decided this wasn’t the career for her. She became a dental nurse for the health authority, which included travelling around to various practices in Lincolnshire.

She met and married Tim and when their two daughters, Amy and Sophie, came along she had a short career break. When Amy was two and-a-half and Sophie was a year old, she went to work evenings at Safeways. Tim took over parenting responsibility and Shelagh says she got to talk with adults between 5.00pm and 8.00pm! She also did some out-of-hours paging work at the ambulance station, when Lin Med first started, where she took patients’ details and then contacted the doctor.

Shelagh, as a busy working mum, do you have time for any other hobbies or interests?

“I’m also a Guide Leader in Nettleham. Again, it was something I got involved in on a voluntary basis about 9 years ago and I really love it.

We meet on a Friday evening for 90 minutes or so and I’ve done so many things I never thought I would have - from nature walks and camping to learning sign language, campfire skills and team building exercises.

Now I even get involved in running one or two sessions, with support from our leader Rachel.

We are also keen for the girls to learn other skills and are planning to have a session from a local bee keeper, where we’ll even get to see how the hive works. Other than the guiding and responding, I enjoy cross-stitch and regularly see my parents - I often go to the theatre with my Dad and try to meet up with Mum for lunch once a week. I’m always busy with Tim and the girls and I keep in frequent contact with my brothers and sister, four of whom live in the Lincoln area and my twin brother lives in Newcastle and the other brother is in Goole.”

Cote Hill Blue Soufflé Makes 4-6 ramekins Ingredients:

Method

To “double-bake”

400ml milk 1 peeled onion 4 cloves 75g butter 60g cornflour 100g Cote Hill Blue, crumbled or grated 2 eggs 50g grated Parmesan Butter to grease ramekins Seasoning to taste

Pre-heat oven to 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark 7.

Prepare the ramekins by liberally buttering the insides and dusting with Parmesan.

Place the soufflés in a dish brown-side down. Spoon over and around about 2/3 tablespoons of cream and sprinkle with extra cheese

Stud the onion with cloves, place in the saucepan with milk and heat gently to just below boiling. Switch off the heat and allow to infuse for about 1 hour.

Bake (about 10-15 minutes) until hot, well risen and the cream is thick and bubbling.

Make a roux with the flour and butter and add the strained infused milk. Cook until you have a thick sauce that is smooth and silky. Remove from the heat and stir in the Cote Hill Blue Cheese and melt. Gradually beat in the two egg yolks.

Makes a great starter, or lunch/supper dish, served with crusty bread and a fresh green dressed salad.

Whisk the two egg whites until stiff and add to the mixture. Divide the soufflé mixture between the buttered ramekins.

Stand the filled ramekins in a deep baking tray half-filled with hot water and cook until well risen and golden, about 15 minutes. The soufflés can be eaten immediately, or allowed to sink and cool and be “double-baked” at a later stage.

If freezing, wrap the soufflés individually in greaseproof paper and wrap with foil.

Use within a month. Can be cooked from frozen (the double-baking time shown will need to be increased to ensure that the soufflés are piping hot to serve).

Nettleham C Once again we got away with it and although it rained briefly just before the Carnival was officially opened, it stopped as the procession arrived on The Green and continued fine for the rest of the afternoon.

The procession had been judged by Carol Blakeborough and Donna Wilkinson, from the Childrens Unit at the Lincoln County Hospital, and the Best Float was Nettleham Scouts, Cubs and Beavers as King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table, winning £25 donated by Wecando Flooring.

The Best Walking Group was Nettleham Infants as Sing a Song of Sixpence, winning £25 donated by Carr Financial.

Whilst the Judging was taking place, there was the first of the Open Mic performances by a Folk Band.

It was then time for Mr Alastair Scammel, Consultant in Paediatrics at Lincoln County Hospital, to officially open the Carnival.

Mr Scammel spoke about the Children’s Unit, now to be called Rainforest Ward.

The 2010 Carnival Queen: Megan Chadbone, and Princess: Emily McRobbie, led the Procession in an Audi loaned by Lincoln Audi and driven by Karl Ackerman, and on arrival at The Green, presented the 2011 Queen: Kassidy Farnsworth and Princess: Lilly-May Smith with the cloaks and tiaras that go with the titles. Both 2011 Queen and Princess won £10, kindly donated by Nettleham Plastering.

by David Burghardt Vision Care. Whilst he made his choices, Mr Scammel spoke to all the contestants.

The programme was started by Nettleham Drama Group, who gave their humorous version of the Royal Wedding. This was followed by clowning by ‘Feet First’, who got a large number of children involved in his routine.

The second Open Mic performance comprised The Boxenburgs, a cappella group, and the guitar effects spot by Dan. Irish Dancing was next by Colleen Roberts dancers who, combining with another troupe, are now the Inis Cara School of Irish Dancing, and continued to delight the audience.

This was followed by Ballroom Dancing by the Premier Dance Centre,followed by the Inis Cara School of Irish Dancing for their second spot, and Feet First for his.

The programme finished with Open Mic by Lee who sang two Clash songs, James’ acoustic guitar and lastly Anna, Greg and Adam, vocals and guitars, followed by the draw for the Carnival Raffle, the result of which is to be seen in the village pubs and on the Co-op and Parish Council notice boards. This year’s Carnival charity, the Children’s Unit at the County Hospital, will get half the proceeds of the Carnival Raffle, which this year will be £600. Many thanks to those who purchased tickets.

Elsewhere on The Green were the usual Carnival stalls and games, together with additional stalls being run by groups raising funds for their own local charities.

The Village Hall are grateful to all the volunteers. These include the WI for their excellent refreshments,The Ladies Club for their delicious cakes and the local Threshold Church for the entertainment and games run in The Quad, all of which donated their proceeds of the day to the Carnival - we could not do without any of them. HiQ provided the sound equipment for the Carnival.

New this year were JumiCars on a track in Church Street, very popular - with a big queue! Unfortunately the fairground organ was unavailable at the last moment and the Lincoln Formation Dancing Team were unable to make it to the event.

It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway, that we could not manage this event without the volunteers to put up the stalls, gazebos and bunting. Many also run the stalls all afternoon and members of the Carnival Committee and others do a fine job in ensuring a successful event.

Sometimes there aren’t enough volunteers, and some game stalls don’t appear on the day. This is a shame because enjoyment and takings are lost. If you’d like to give one day a year to help, then we’d like to hear from you. Later this year, the majority of the Village Hall’s revenue, not spent on routine maintenance, will go towards a complete refurbishment.

The Leaf Miner Moth Strikes Again!

It was with great dismay that I noticed that the beautiful horse chestnut tree in the churchyard next to Beckside, together with others in the village, have once again been the subject of attack by the larvae of the Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner Moth.

This happened last year and again the healthy new foliage, which emerged from the ‘sticky buds’ earlier in the spring this year, has suffered the depradations of this destructive insect pest.

Already, in July, the leaves on the tree are beginning to turn brown and curl up as a result of the attack and the majority of the ‘conkers’ have dropped prematurely.

100 Years of Lincoln’s Precious Drinking Water A day of celebration in aid of those who still don’t have clean, fresh drinking water Plans to celebrate the Centenary of Lincoln’s drinking water supply from Elkesley in Nottinghamshire have been announced.

The new drinking water of 1911 was greeted as “salvation” by joyous citizens who knew only too well of the shortcomings of the previous supply.

It was responsible for the typhoid epidemic of 1904/1905 which killed 131 Lincolnians and made more than a thousand ill.

On Saturday 1 October, 100 years after the original switch-on, the Lincoln Water 100 Committee are organising a day of celebration in aid of the international charity Water Aid. Their plans include a commemorative spouting of the fountain in the Arboretum before the Civic Party and anyone who wishes to attend. The fountain was originally cranked into action to spout the first Elkesley water by Mayor Newsum in front of thousands of cheering citizens in October 1911.

“We are planning a day of events that will interest everyone who drinks water!” said Paul Brewer, President-elect of the Rotary Club of Lincoln, who are partnering Anglian Water in organising the centenary celebrations.

“It seemed a good idea to head back to the Arboretum, because the fountain is actually made of stone cores extracted when the boreholes were sunk into the aquifer below Elkesley in 1909.

“We’re planning a spectacular spouting of the fountain, the Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue band in the bandstand, Pedro the clown, a Lincoln Fire Brigade water tender and other attractions.”

After 1905, Lincoln Corporation, much criticised for the quality of their existing water supply, were determined to replace it with a new supply and structures that would “last for 100 years”.... and their prophecy has turned out to be true.

The Water Tower in Westgate and Bracebridge Heath Reservoir, original utilities that are still in use, will both be partially open to the public on 1 October.

Outside the Water Tower, Anglian Water’s main-laying team will be giving a demonstration, and their Mobile Education Unit will organise children’s activities.

Another key attraction will be an exhibition at the nearby Museum of Lincolnshire Life which will illustrate the story of Elkesley water with still photographs, cuttings, and video.

The exhibition is being organised by Trevor Pacey whose book on Lincoln’s water “To Fetch a Pail of Water” is being re-issued this month to help launch the celebrations.

Mr Pacey is donating all his royalties to Water Aid which works to ensure access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in some of the world’s poorest communities.

“The sense of relief in 1911 must have been palpable,” said Mr Pacey. “The city had a cloud hanging over it from 1905 and was unable to move on until the new supply was on tap.

“The people had been muddling through with heavily treated water, imported water, and what they could get from springs and conduits.

“It took until 1911 to provide the new supply, partly because Nottinghamshire interests didn’t want their water to come to Lincoln. The dispute went all the way to the House of Lords where Lincoln were eventually enabled by an Act of Parliament to begin the work.”

The exhibition will include an album of letters and cards sent from Lincoln expressing thanks to Alderman Thomas Smith of Newark, who organised daily rail deliveries of safe water during the typhoid epidemic. The family heirloom is being loaned by John and Robert Beall, Alderman Smith’s great grandsons.

With a traction engine and an 1881 pump in steam at at the Museum that day, there’ll be the opportunity to remember Juanita and Livens, splendid steam engines at Elkesley that pumped the water from 1911 to 1973 when Juanita blew up!

The damage meant that the elegant pumping house of 1911 at Elkesley had to be demolished and replaced by Anglian Water’s modern electric station which still pumps much of Lincoln’s water today.

Visitors to the Water Tower and the Museum will be able to collect a leaflet describing a heritage trail around uphill Lincoln and pointing out features associated with the city’s water from Roman times onwards.

Mr Brewer said: “All our daytime events are free, but we will be asking people to feed our buckets with donations for Water Aid. Through the Rotary movement we could triple what we raise in Lincoln that day.”

At night there will be a Civic Banquet to commemorate the celebration given by the Corporation in 1911 and held in the Assembly Rooms, just as the original one in the early years of the twentieth century.

Said Mr. Brewer: “This VIP ticket is targeted at sponsoring companies, particularly those who have been using Lincoln’s water for a long time, but we have also invited representatives from inner city wards, where we know the citizens queued for imported water in the typhoid epidemic.”

The celebrations close on Friday 7 October, when Michael Norton, an international expert on water provision, will give the Bishop Grosseteste Memorial Lecture in Lincoln Cathedral. Mr Norton is Managing Director for Water and Power for the Halcrow Group. Attendance is free.

Ciaran Nelson, a spokesman for Anglian Water, said: “Nowadays, we take for granted that water flows readily out of the tap whenever we need it and few people ever have cause to question the supply or quality of that water.

“One hundred years ago, the situation couldn’t have been more different. Given that some people around the world still can’t rely on a safe and secure supply of water, it’s fantastic that the Rotary Club of Lincoln are using this Centenary to help those who remain in need.

“I doubt many Lincolnians have given much thought to where their water comes from. I would urge people to give some thought to just how precious water is in their lives.”

Andrew Cook, Director of Fundraising for Water Aid said: “We are extremely grateful to the Rotary Club of Lincoln and to Anglian Water for their continued support over the years, and now with this fantastic event celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s water supply.

“While waterborne diseases are no longer such a threat in the UK, this is sadly not the case in some of the poorest parts of the world. It can cost Water Aid just £15 to ensure access to a lasting supply of clean water, sanitation and hygiene, so everyone involved will be making a huge difference.”

All Saints Make God laugh - tell Him your plans Bishop John Saxbee had a saying: ‘If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans’. Last year, after being involved in church music for 60 years and choirmaster at Nettleham Parish Church for nearly 10 years I decided I needed a break and looked forward to winding down, while continuing to work as a Reader (a lay minister) at the church.

Within a month, along with a group of Readers, I had a letter out of the blue from the Bishop of Grimsby suggesting that we might like to explore the possibility of ordination as a Distinctive Deacon. Now the diaconate has been, for many years, the first step towards priesthood, but recent developments have slowly seen the introduction of ‘permanent’ or distinctive’ deacons (called DDs) who remain as such, undertaking the role of deacon as their ministry, but not proceeding to the priesthood. The idea had reached Lincolnshire.

So God had the last laugh and overturned my plans to cut back. To my astonishment I find myself with the title of Assistant Minister. I shall assist in the parishes of Nettleham and Riseholme, and occasionally help out too at Welton, Scothern and Dunholme.

So what does a deacon do? The origin of the word is diakonos which means ‘servant’ with the undertones of ‘administrator’ and the role, established nearly 2,000 years ago, has changed little.

In worship, the deacon is literally at the priest’s right-hand at the altar with responsibility for inviting the congregation to confess their sins, reading the Gospel, preaching, leading intercessions, preparing the table for communion and dismissing the congregation.

I’m cutting back, I thought, Deacons lead some not going forward. What to Revd Richard Thornton worship, baptise, take do? The end of July is three-quarters of the way through our bowling season and an interesting season it’s been.

The number of members declined during last winter, but we are now back up to 44 bowling members and 31 social members.

We have both won and lost a few league matches and we still have teams in the knockout cup tournaments. It is not usual for a small local team, but we have had as many as six spectators. Local people are taking an interest - that’s good news.

Nettleham Bowls Club has good facilities (which are owned by the club) and when other clubs in the county are struggling to keep open, we are developing. The current Committee is looking to grow the club over the next few years and to that end we are arranging for the local junior school to bring a group of children to our green next year to try out the game.

Nettleham Methodist Church Everyone is invited to our Christian Church and a warm welcome is guaranteed Service times are: 9.00am - approx 10.00am for a traditional style of praise and worship.

The 10.45 service is a more contemporary style, where families are catered for, with a creche and activities for children and young people aged from 4 to 14.

The Youth Club is held every Friday in term time, and we still have room for more young people.

A ‘one-stop’ shop offering more than 160 volunteering opportunities has moved premises.

So if you have ever fancied doing something useful for the community, or different in your spare time, then why not call in? There could be a volunteering opportunity right up your street.

The Volunteer Centre Services West Lindsey (VCS WL) has a new office in the Guildhall in Marshall’s Yard, Gainsborough.

Chief Executive of West Lindsey District Council, Manjeet Gill said: “I am delighted to welcome the Volunteer Centre to the Guildhall.

“Volunteering is something I am very passionate about and is something I would recommend anyone to try. Volunteering led me to start work in local government, so you will be amazed at the doors it can open for you.

“No matter how much time you have to spare I am sure the volunteer centre will be able to find something to suit everyone.”

The Volunteer Centre supports community and voluntary groups, clubs and other organisations for the benefit of the community. Advice, information and training is provided by staff, who also organise regular networking opportunities and events.

Gill Taylor heads up the VCS WL team which also includes Vanessa Maunders, the Outreach Project Officer, and Sam Crow the Project Support Officer.

Gill explained the centre works with around 300 organisations.

She said: “Our friendly volunteer advisors work hard to match the skills of the volunteer with the needs and opportunities of the community organisations to find the right opportunities. Please call in and see us, our door is always open and we look forward to meeting new volunteers.”

“We know lots about volunteering which can involve anything from working in a toy library, the Trinity Arts Centre or at the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.”

Children younger than 16 can be offered volunteering opportunities, but must have their parents’ consent.

On 1 July this year a new act will come into force: The Bribery Act. This new Act means that businesses are responsible for all corruption undertaken by their staff, unless the business can show that they have put ‘adequate procedures’ in place to prevent it.

Most of us consider ourselves honest individuals and there will be a temptation to dismiss the new Act out of hand, but there are concerns that something much more part of daily business life, namely corporate hospitality, may all too easily fall foul of the Act. Although Government guidance has confirmed that the Act will not outlaw corporate hospitality, there is no definition just how far ‘corporate hospitality’ can go before it becomes considered as bribery.

In short the Bribery Act will: 49

1. Introduce a corporate offence of failure to prevent bribery by persons working on behalf of a business.

A business can avoid conviction if it can show that it has adequate procedures in place to prevent bribery.

2. Make it a criminal offence to give, promise or offer a bribe and to request, agree to receive or accept a bribe, either at home or abroad.

3. Increase the maximum penalty for bribery from 7 to 10 years’ imprisonment, together with an unlimited fine.

The key at this stage is to look at what, if any, risk of bribery is faced by your business. Modest risks require modest procedures to mitigate them.

If in doubt, businesses should seek advice upon their position and upon any amendments required to their procedures to comply with this new legislation.

As you will have seen on page 1, we were pleased that the Nettleham Ward had, once again, the highest turnout of electors in the West Lindsey District elections in 2011.

At West Lindsey DC, Ray Sellars has been appointed to serve on the ‘Prosperous Communities’, ‘Standards and Governance’ and ‘Governance and Audit’ committees.

Malcolm Leaning is on the ‘Challenge and Improvement’, ‘Governance and Audit’ and the ‘Development Management’ (Planning) Committees (because of the ‘quasi judicial’ nature of the ‘Planning Committee’ Malcolm is not allowed to discuss the merits or otherwise of any planning application with anyone, without losing his right to vote on whether or not to grant it permission). Malcolm has also been elected to represent the District Council on the 3rd Witham Internal Drainage Board, the Liberal Democrats on the Editorial board of ‘West Lindsey News’ and the 7 Lincolnshire District Councils on the Finance committee of the LCC Pension scheme.

West Lindsey District Council News Recycling cartons You may already know that all your milk and juice cartons can now be recycled by putting these into your blue recycling bin.

This change came about as Lincolnshire County Council were able to negotiate inclusion of the collection of cartons as part of the existing contract for processing recyclables from the West Lindsey and City of Lincoln areas. These will be sorted along with other recyclables at no extra cost to Lincolnshire County Council and therefore no extra cost to local Council Tax Payers.

Once collected, these cartons can be recycled into a number of different products, ranging from plasterboard liner to high strength paper bags and envelopes.

Please remember it will help us if you squash your cartons first.

How is it done?

Firstly the baled cartons are dropped into a pulper, similar to a giant domestic food mixer, which is then filled with water and pulped for around 20 minutes. This breaks down the packaging to produce a grey-brown mixture. The aluminium foil and polyethylene are separated from the fibre, and then the fibre is recovered to make new paper products. The remaining mix of plastic and aluminium can then be used in furniture, to generate energy, or even separated out into pure aluminium and paraffin.

You need to be in rented property, but it doesn’t matter whether your landlord is a housing association or a private landlord - you could still get help. If you are unsure as to whether you qualify, why not make a claim? The worst that could happen is that we tell you that you don’t qualify.

Council Tax Benefit We also administer applications for help towards paying your Council Tax. To get Council Tax Benefit you don’t need to be on other benefits - just on a low income.

Pre-Development Advice: a new service from your District Council West Lindsey DC planning department welcome and encourage discussions with homeowners or developers before they submit a planning application - a service called ‘Pre-Development Advice’. This service will give you the opportunity to fully explore your proposal with us and find out what information you need to support your planning application.

Why use this service?

Pre-development advice reduces the number of unsuccessful applications that 50

we handle, because any possible issues that might affect you getting planning permission are identified and discussed before you submit the full planning application. This is likely to save you time and money because you only have to pay for one set of plans.

To ensure that we are running our services effectively and can continually improve customer service, we have to charge for some pre-development advice. These charges enable us to provide this useful service and are in addition to the fees that you will need to pay when you submit the actual planning application later on.

Charging for pre-development advice covers some of the costs that the Council pays to run the service, which means that only people that need advice pay for the service - not the Council Tax payer.

What can you expect?

Our pre-development advice will include: ● a team approach where we work with you to help develop a successful outcome ● a review of the planning history of the site, including any constraints we know about ● identification of relevant planning policies and any potential planning obligations that may arise ● identify any supporting information that you will need to include with your application ● a written response offering, without prejudice, the views of your Planning Officer.

New Electoral Wards for West Lindsey The Local Government Boundary Commission have been making proposals, and discussing them, for new wards and Councillor representation in West Lindsey, to take effect from the next election in 2015.

The Nettleham Ward currently has two councillors representing the communities of Nettleham, Grange-de-Lings, Riseholme and Greetwell. The current proposal is that Greetwell is included in the Cherry Willingham Ward and three councillors are elected to serve a Nettleham Ward comprising Nettleham, Grange-de-Lings, Riseholme, Sudbrooke and Scothern.

We feel that this large 3-member ward would not serve residents’ interests well and have written as follows to the Commission: Dear Sir/Madam We have read your proposals for ward and boundary changes in West Lindsey and would like to comment on them.

You have been asked to correct electoral inequality where you find it, but in your proposals you have, in at least one or two cases, created unnecessary other problems.

There is no requirement for you to create 3-member wards and in doing so, in some cases, one large community will dominate and effectively choose the representatives for the entire ward - whatever the smaller community wishes.

We have represented the Nettleham Ward in various capacities for many years and have both just been elected to serve a 4-year term on West Lindsey District Council.

Nettleham, with Riseholme and Grange-de-Lings, is a natural 2-member ward. The proposed ward of currently 3,733 electors will soon significantly increase in population with a large new estate of 90+* houses in the ward having recently received full P/P while 15 new

homes, in North Street, Nettleham, already built, are soon to be occupied. Sudbrooke and Scothern together have a current population of 2,166 (almost exactly matching your ‘desired’ average of 2140) and naturally suit a single representative.

I suggest and request that you alter your proposal to allow 2 Councillors to represent Nettleham, Grange-de-Lings and Riseholme and 1 councillor to represent Sudbrooke and Scothern after 2015.

There have been no complaints from elected members, or members of the public, as to the current arrangements with 2 representatives serving Nettleham and the smaller adjacent parishes and 1 serving the interests of Sudbrooke and Scothern - so why change it?

In a similar vein, we know that the relatively nearby villages of Welton and Dunholme are very much separate communities and would better suit separate representation. A similar division would allow a single councillor to represent Dunholme and the surrounding area while Welton and district could justify 2 representatives.

*(The 90+ houses mentioned above are to be built on the Lincoln side of the Ring Road, but still technically in Nettleham).

Neither of these suggestions would alter the total number of proposed councillors which would still be 36.

Mill Hill footway reconstruction (Vicarage Lane to Old School) and the Church Street footway reconstruction (Beck to No 11) are to be carried out during the school summer holidays.

In the past, the boundary commission, at a review looking at West Lindsey, split the then 3-member Cherry Willingham Ward into 2 divisions to create a 2-member Cherry Willingham Ward and a single member Fiskerton Ward to make for a fairer representation!

The recent election has shown that locally electors will vote for candidates over parties, often splitting representation.

Too large a ward will encourage more voting purely on a party ticket.

In addition there are many Parish councils and Parish meetings in rural wards which rightly expect the attendance of their District Councillors. Large wards make this duty more difficult and in some cases impossible with meetings often being held on the same night.

When we agreed to ‘all out’ elections on a four-year cycle, one of the factors that persuaded many to support it was the extra time it would give for the Boundary Commission to consider how any proposed changes could work properly and fairly can you not have further consultation as the next full election is not until 2015?

We, as Liberal Democrat Councillors, have discussed our thoughts and concerns with other local councillors from the Conservative group and they agree with 51

Cancer Research ‘Relay for Life’ Update

NOW brings orchestral music-making to Nettleham Out-of-practice Lincolnshire musicians who still have their instrument tucked away somewhere are invited to get in touch with NOW Nettleham Orchestral Workshops to rekindle their enthusiasm for music-making.

Held each month in Nettleham Junior School, just north of Lincoln, NOW is led by conductor Mary Michell from soundLINCS Lincolnshire Music Development Agency. The soundLINCS team is very grateful to Nettleham Junior School for allowing NOW to use its facilities.

“The emphasis of NOW is very much on fun and newcomers are always welcome - we just ask you to be fairly comfortable working from notation,” says Mary. “All music is provided and we play a real mix. This coming term, for example, we’re planning to work on The Dam Busters’ March by Eric Coates alongside Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite and an exciting selection of themes from the Pirates of the Caribbean films.”

NOW sessions are £7 per player and run in the CE Aided Junior School on Mill Hill in Nettleham.

The inaugural session is on Saturday 17 September, with the series continuing on 8 October, 19 November and 17 December, all running from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

“Just come armed with your instrument - whether woodwind, brass, strings or percussion - and a music stand,” concludes Mary Michell. “The only other thing you’ll need is the determination to enjoy making music with others!”

In the summer edition of Nettleham News, I wrote about the ‘Relay for Life’ and the reason that several families from our village had decided to get involved and raise money for Cancer Research.

Well since then we have completed the ‘Relay for Life’ and what a great event it was! 31 teams took part and so far have raised in excess of an amazing £25,000.

This total continues to grow as people get their fund-raising amounts in.

As a team we had to have someone walking for the duration of the relay, which was 24 hours! The night shift was the worst. As a Team the Nettleham Wanderers have worked hard and we have raised about £1,500. We held a Ladies’ Night Clothes Swapping Night, at Nettleham Infants School which raised £420. Over 50 ladies came along with unwanted clothes and swapped them for other lovely things.

I would like to sincerely thank all the local businesses who kindly donated towards the raffle. They are: The White Hart, The Brown Cow, Scandigifts, Flowers by Design, Aspects of Beauty, David Burghardt opticians, Scothern Nurseries, Kalista Hair and Beauty in Ingham, The Co-op and the Co-op Pharmacy. Thank you again, you all helped to make the event such a success.

I would also like to thank the wonderful Otter and her Beavers who held a Sponsored Silence and raised a wonderful £176! WOW! We have also held a jumble sale, two cake sales, a baby singing session (by Baby Bells run by Claire Bell, who donated her time) and our team members have worked really hard to get sponsors. At the Relay itself, we had a Teddy Tombola and Lucky Dip to raise extra funds. Everyone worked so hard. Thank you so much for everything.

The ‘Relay for Life’ will be an annual event, so do look out for the details of next year’s event.

1st Nettleham The summer term is always the busiest and is, in my opinion, the best time of year to enjoy what Scouting has to offer and 2011 has been no exception.

The beavers, cubs and scouts all attended events run by the Lincoln District Scout team at Sudbrooke Park camp site. The beavers were invited for a fun day to celebrate 25 years of Beaver Scouts.

The cubs attended the annual District cub camp, where the theme was athletics.

The scouts attended a survival camp where they had to survive for 24 hours without any of the usual luxuries of camp. Amongst other things they learned how to skin a rabbit, sleep in a bivouac rather than a tent and (possibly the biggest shock) make their own open fire and cook their own food!

It was once again a pleasure to be part of the village Carnival where the beavers and cubs entered a float based on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It was very pleasing that the efforts of the children (and leaders) were rewarded with winning the title of “Best Float”.

The cub pack had an international visitor in June. Kieran Black, a cub scout from Georgia, USA, was visiting relatives in Nettleham and asked if he could join in with cub scouts whilst he was here in Nettleham. It was a pleasure to welcome Kieran into the Nettleham cub pack for a couple of weeks, one of which being the annual boat race that Kieran nearly won!

He was presented with a set of Nettleham badges and group necker scarf to take home to remember his time with us.

Throughout the year the scout group participates in many exciting and adventurous activities, so it is sometimes difficult to decide what has been the best thing that we have done. However, the ‘high’ light of this year was definitely going to RAF Cranwell to go gliding with the Gliding Club there. With the exception of one scout that had a bit of a bumpy flight and felt a little ill on landing, all really enjoyed the flight with the words ‘awesome’, ‘brilliant’ and ‘superb’ used to describe their experience.

The summer term came to a close with an end of term ‘big adventure’ group event at Sudbrooke Park camp site for the whole family. There were games, a BBQ and awards presented during the evening.

The weather was kind and it was a great opportunity for parents, siblings and other family members to experience some of the fun that scouting offers.

4th Lincoln Scout Group sections, Chief Scout bronze and gold awards presented to some beavers and scouts, and this year there was a special award for presentation, courtesy of the Nettleham Ladies Club.

In December 2010 the Nettleham Ladies Club provided funding to the Scout Group for the purchase of some new equipment and awards. A new event shelter was purchased earlier in the year and it was a great pleasure to provide awards to a member in each of the sections who had made a significant contribution to the scout group. It was very difficult for the leaders to select only one candidate for the awards which were: Jack Vail (‘Beaver of the Year’), Ben Tate (‘Cub of the Year’) and Tom Hagens (‘Scout of the Year’).

Many thanks to all of you who supported our ‘Breakfast on the Green’ in May. It is a great event for the group to put on for village residents and visitors and is essential for our fund-raising efforts. The next one is on Saturday 17 September, so come down to the The Green and enjoy a delicious full English breakfast with us (see page 3).

The waiting list for children interested in joining the Beavers has recently grown significantly, indicating that the re-opening of the 2nd Beaver Colony and Cub Pack would be viable. These were both closed a few years ago, when the volunteer leaders at that time finished and no one came forward to replace them. If there are any readers who may be interested in being part of our active group, that gives the young people of Nettleham and district the opportunity of a lifetime, by assisting me to set up a new Beaver Colony and Cub Pack, do please contact me.

Celebrating the Royal Wedding Staged in the car port in the garden of Sally and Doug Bradley in case of inclement weather, everyone enjoyed a very convivial and entertaining afternoon with lots of laughter, reminiscences and sing-songs.

The residents of All Saints Lane cul-de-sac decided that the occasion of the Royal Wedding provided the perfect opportunity to get together and have a celebration of their very own.

From humble beginnings the Club has grown to over 180 members who enjoy interesting speakers at monthly meetings throughout the year (see page 17 for the 2011/12 programme), the garden store facility on Saturday mornings, the Annual Show in September and the occasional outing.

We also have a plant stall at Nettleham Carnival in July, which helps support the Village Hall, as well as raising funds for the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association.

The End of an Era

Rob and Judy Renshaw formerly of Kingsway, Nettleham were recently honoured in Lincoln by being elected and appointed City Sheriff and Sheriff’s Lady.

Whilst going around the garden, I noticed a planter containing a clematis tilted to one side. Looking at it more closely I saw that inside were two eggs. I replaced the planter and over the next few days we kept an eye on it, to note any changes.

As time went by we noticed Emily (as she was later named) had laid an egg a day until she stopped at nine, staying on the planter and only leaving it at night to find water and food, which was left for her.

Both Rob and Judy have worked hard over the years, both in and out of office, to serve the constituents in their Ward in the most effective way possible. This was fitting recognition of their efforts in serving the local community.

The ceremony, steeped in history and tradition going back several hundreds of years, was part of the City of Lincoln Council’s Annual General Meeting.

The declaration of acceptance by the Sheriff, read by the Chief Executive: “You, Robin Renshaw, having been appointed to the office of Sheriff, hereby declare that you take the said office upon yourself and will duly and faithfully fulfil the duties thereof, according to the best of your judgement and ability.”

So, after 37 years of teaching Keep Fit in Nettleham, I made the difficult decision to finish taking classes as from July 2011.

Two weeks or so later we awoke to see nine ducklings. My daughter asked: “Why don’t you get the old paddling pool out?”, which was no good to anyone, as it is too small, so we did. We noticed the ducklings couldn’t get in, so we put a plank up for them to use. Over the next few weeks they used the pool daily, and Eric (as we named him) came in the mornings for breakfast.

I started to attend sessions at Sincil Bank School when I was 18. How strange, class members wore footless leggings and tunics! This soon progressed to black leotards, and eventually sleeveless brightly coloured and patterned ones.

We then noticed one morning that there were only six, later discovering that two had fallen behind the planter where they slept and sadly did not survive. As for the third, we have no idea of his or her fate.

From then on Emily took them for a walk every day, but always came back with less than she went with, until one day she sadly came back on her own. Emily and Eric though, still come daily for their breakfast and a paddle.

After the private robing, each entrance of the new officers was greeted with a fanfare of trumpeters. The meeting and ceremony were attended by City Councillors, along with family and friends of the recipients of the offices bestowed.

We wish to congratulate them both, and wish them well in their endeavours during their year of office.

Having moved to Nettleham, I joined the Tuesday Keep Fit at the Junior School and was asked to lead an afternoon class at the Village Hall, which had a crèche (needless to say the children wanted to join in as well!). I was then told that the evening tutor was to leave, and perhaps I would like to take it on also. This meant going to training, and getting stuck in the snow at Horncastle Residential College. However the class went well using taped music instead of the piano, and I then started Mondays as well.

We have had lots of fun over the years, attending rallies, demonstrations in the East Midlands, appearing at Nottingham Concert Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London and representing England at the Festival of Exercise & Dance in Belfast.

I hope my ladies (and gentlemen) enjoyed themselves and learned at least a little about keeping fit and supple and realising just what they could actually achieve.

I shall really miss everyone, and would like to thank them all for their support, cards, gifts and encouragement.

There’s Still Just Time!

There’s still just time to nominate someone from the local community to carry the Olympic torch next year, but you’ll need to act quickly.

The torch will arrive in the UK on 18 May 2012 and embark on a 70-day journey around the UK. Lincoln has been selected as one of the four East Midland cities to host one of the Community Celebration events.

In order to encourage the involvement of everyone in the London 2012 Olympics, the largest sporting event ever staged in the UK, Lloyds TSB is inviting nominations for people who have made a difference, big or small, in their community to carry the Olympic flame as part of the Olympic Torch relay.

It could be a team coach for his/her dedication to supporting young people in sporting activities, the neighbour who is always helping others in the community, the teacher who runs after-school clubs, the volunteer who helps in the organising and running a valued local service - in fact anyone who has made a real difference in their community and inspired others.

Whoever is chosen to carry the flame, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an experience they will never forget.

Sight now for Success Later Why children’s eye health is so important It is estimated that 1 million children will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem.

Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour - yet often goes unrecognized by teachers, parents and by the children themselves. Children may not be aware of, or may not be able to explain, their vision difficulties and a parent or teacher may not notice any problems.

Commenting on children’s eye health, Bob Hughes, Chief Executive at the Association of Optometrists, said: “It’s an absolute public health disgrace. There are problems which can be corrected in young people’s eyes and yet it’s a buried issue, an unknown issue, that children are losing out on a good education because they can’t see properly.”

The sooner that vision problems are detected - the better the outcome. Many childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye and squint, can be treated if they are picked up early - as the eye and visual system are actively developing during the school years. If vision problems are identified and treated, it can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Sight Tests are free for all children under the age of 16. Parents can take their children along to a local optometrist or optician for a free NHS Sight Test.

Optometrists are qualified to examine the eyes of all children, paid for by the NHS. Help towards the cost of glasses is also available on the NHS for all children.

Toddlers and young children do not need to be able to read, as an eye examination can be carried effectively out using pictures.

The UK is a long way behind the rest of Europe in the number of children who have regular eye examinations and the proportion of children who wear vision correction. In France, it’s part of the summer back-to-school routine to book children in for an eye examination. In the US state of Kentucky, it is law that every child must have a comprehensive eye examination before they are allowed to start school.

Many parents still assume that their child will have their vision checked at school, regardless of whether this actually happens or not. Vision screening provision is patchy many areas do not provide it. Even where vision screening is provided in school, there are many conditions which, although they may cause significant problems to a child and their ability to learn, will not be picked up at a screening. Screenings are designed to pick up amblyopia, but what about moderate refractive error, binocular vision anomalies and the overall health of the eyes? A proper sight test is free - why not have one?

Compulsory Pensions for all from 2012 What one expert has described as the most important reform to pensions for 50 years comes into force next year.

The impact will be massive.

Businesses with over 120,000 employees will be compelled to contribute to their employees’ pensions from October 2012.

Smaller firms will be phased in over the following four years to 2016.

The level of contributions from employers will also be phased in, starting at 1% of salary and rising to 3% of salary by 2017.

Employers will be required to enrol all their workers aged between 22 and 75 who earn in excess of the income tax personal allowance (£7,475 per annum in 2011/2012) into a pension scheme within 12 months of the commencement of their employment, or on the first day that the regulations apply to them.

Contributions must total at least 8% of qualifying earnings, with a minimum of 3% ultimately to come from the employer once the regulations are fully phased in. The remaining contribution is made up by the employee and from tax relief on the pension contributions.

The only exception to the obligation to enrol a qualifying worker into a pension scheme will be when the employee expresses a wish not to be enrolled into the pension scheme. This represents a sea change for UK business.

The employers would be well advised to start getting to grips with the new rules and preparing for their implementation and hopefully employees, who do not presently have access to a company pension scheme, will benefit by being able to look forward to greater security in retirement.

When the Editor informed me that there was just so much material for this edition of the magazine, that there was simply no room for my usual penn’orth, I was naturally a bit miffed.

The Point of No Return?

Research suggests that more and more of us are shopping online.

Indeed statistics show that 93% of consumers planned to do so last Christmas.

It is undeniable that shopping online brings with it a number of advantages.

Consumers appear to prefer to avoid traffic and parking problems and crowded stores and are, as a result, taking advantage of more affordable broadband services available to them at home.

The difference with purchasing items online can be, of course, that return of goods can be less straightforward than may be the case when you have purchased those goods from your local store.

Retailers and consumers alike, therefore, are well advised to be aware of their rights and obligations under the legislation which governs purchases made online, or by any means of ‘distance communication’ which will include telephone and mail order, the internet and digital TV. Significantly, for both the retailer and the consumer, these legal rights which arise from the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations mean that consumers purchasing online are in a stronger position than they would be had they bought the same goods in store.

Questions often arise, where goods have been purchased online, by telephone or by mail order, whether the goods can be returned and the contract for their purchase cancelled. There is greater scope for this to arise given that the goods are purchased without the consumer actually seeing or feeling the goods until after they have paid for them and they have been delivered.

Under the Distance Selling Regulations if the consumer wishes to cancel the contract and return the goods then they must inform the retailer within 7 working days after the day on which the goods are received. This assumes, however, that the trader has provided the consumer with all of the written confirmatory information in a timely fashion as required by the regulations.

If they have not done so, then the

cancellation period can be extended up to a maximum of 3 months and 7 working days. From the trader’s point of view, therefore, it is important that their online systems are designed to provide the required information in the time and in the manner which the regulations require.

If the consumer does cancel the contract then the trader is under an obligation to refund the purchase price as soon as possible after cancellation and in any case within 30 days. The obligation to refund is not, however, dependent upon the goods being returned.

The trader should provide in their Terms & Conditions, therefore, that if the consumer cancels the contract and seeks a refund, then the goods must be returned. Those Terms & Conditions could also provide that if the consumer fails to return the goods, then the trader may charge the consumer for the cost of recovering those goods.

The refund to be given should be the full price of the goods paid, including the cost of delivery.

The disadvantage for the trader is that they are required to accept the returned goods and refund the purchase price, even though they may not be able to resell the goods. The trader cannot insist upon the consumer returning the goods as new or in their original packaging and although the consumer is under a duty to take reasonable care of the goods, if they fail to do so, they do not lose the right to cancel or to seek a refund. In principle a trader faced with a consumer who has not taken reasonable care of the goods can bring an action against the consumer for their breach of that duty. In practice, however, it is unlikely that a trader would refund the purchase price and then pursue a claim against the consumer through the courts.

What is considered to be ‘reasonable care’ will differ depending upon the facts of each particular case. To avoid any uncertainty, therefore, the trader may again be best advised to specify in its Terms & Conditions what the trader considers to be ‘reasonable care’. They can do so, so long as the requirements imposed are not such that they restrict 63

the consumer’s reasonable opportunity to assess the goods.

There are certain exceptions to the right of cancellation, one of which relates to goods made to the consumer’s own specifications, or which are clearly personalised. This exception may apply, for example, to a genuinely bespoke tailored garment, but will not extend to purchases where there has been a selection based on standard options, such as colour and size.

A further exception will apply to goods which by reason of their nature cannot be returned. The general understanding of this exception is that it only applies when returning the goods is a physical impossibility, or where they cannot be restored in the same physical state as they were supplied, no matter how well they are cared for. The Office of Fair Trading suggests, therefore, that this exception may apply, for example, to items such as latex or nylon clothing, which could become distorted, once it has been worn.

The Distance Selling Regulations can therefore place a heavy burden on online sellers. Retailers supplying goods by means of ‘Distance Communication’ need to be aware of the pitfalls and ensure that their Terms & Conditions address the position fully. It is equally important, of course, for the consumers themselves to be aware of their rights when wanting to return goods which they have purchased online.

NETTLEHAM ART GROUP

Annual Exhibition Nettleham Art Group held its Seventh Annual Exhibition in the Old School over the weekend Friday 8 to Sunday 10 July 2011.

One hundred and seventy new and original paintings were on display, together with over 100 more - framed/unframed, mounted/unmounted - on the tables around the hall.

As always, the range of work was immensely diverse, paintings of many different subjects in many different media, testimony to the skill and enthusiasm of each member and the advice, support and encouragement that we give to each other.

The attendance over the three days was 405 - not quite a record, but sixty more than last year. Sales of paintings and other craft items exceeded £700.00. Commission from pictures sold, the admission fee income and donations in the collecting tin, enabled us to donate £200.00 to the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, the charity selected by our members this year.

The Exhibition, always held the same weekend as Nettleham Carnival, is now established as a village event and many visitors, from the village and a wide surrounding area, have come for many years to see - and buy - the new work of the Art Group. Comments in the Visitors’ Book this year included: “as ever superb what a wonderful show”, “lots of talent, lovely pictures” and “a very busy year well done”.

It is interesting to analyse the subjects painted and the media used in painting.

Forty-four of the exhibition pictures were land or seascapes, 39 birds and animals and 31 floral subjects, 16 were buildings of great variety and 14 Nettleham and Lincoln scenes. Half the pictures were painted in watercolour, but more of our artists this year used acrylic paint (27 pictures), pastels (29) and pencil and pen and ink (18).

Without the help of so many group members (and partners!), who assembled and dismantled the exhibition and acted as stewards over the three days, it would not be possible to hold this event. A big ‘thank you’ to all of them.

The Group continues to meet in the Old School on Tuesday and Wednesday

mornings. Space is limited to eighteen maximum on each morning and a number of prospective members are on the waiting list. Four new members have joined the Wednesday group during the last year.

Make a note in your diary of 14 -15 July 2012, when we will be holding our eighth exhibition. A notice will appear in next year’s summer edition of Nettleham News magazine.

having our pre-Christmas sale of arts and crafts in the Old School (see page 3).

NETTLEHAM LADIES CLUB Golden Jubilee Year 2011 Our big event of the year was our Golden Jubilee party held in the Village Hall on Tuesday 28 June. Over 70 members, past and present, attended and the decorated hall and tables looked fantastic in gold and blue and the food, cake and drinks were delicious. 50s and 60s music played gently in the background during the meal and coffee.

Nettleham Ladies Club was founded in 1961, its motto being ‘Friendship and Fellowship to All’.

The Club is now in its 50th year.

At the first meeting, in February 1961, there were about 20 ladies present and subscriptions were 2/6d per year.

In 2011 there are now over 90 members and subscriptions are very reasonable at only £8 per year. New members are always welcome.

Members meet on the last Tuesday of each month (except August and December) in Nettleham Village Hall at 7.30pm commencing with a short business meeting, then coffee, followed by interesting and informative speakers who present talks, show slides and give demonstrations covering a wide variety of subjects. It is a way of meeting and socialising and making friends.

Many outings and theatre trips are enjoyed each year. Various fund-raising events have taken place over the past 50 years. Thousands of pounds have been donated to deserving causes and charities, including the NSPCC, Village Hall Fund, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Scouts, RNLI, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Charities, Alzheimers, MS Therapy Unit, St Barnabas, Strut, Nettleham LIVES and many more. Well done ladies past and present!

Our annual Spring Fayre this year was held on Saturday 7 May in the Village Hall at 2.30pm, with the proceeds going to Nettleham LIVES and was opened by Maurice Nauta. At present it costs the LIVES volunteer group around £2,000 per annum to operate which has to be raised locally, so they are very grateful to groups and individuals for their support.

A grand total of £1,500 was raised and a cheque for this amount was presented to David Herbert from Nettleham LIVES at our monthly May meeting on 31 May 2011. Thanks to everyone who helped and supported this worthwhile cause.

Each year the Ladies Club run a cake and produce stall at the Nettleham Carnival on the village green, and with the large number of people who came this year on Saturday 9 July, we were able to give the Village Hall Committee £141.

After the meal, the Chairman invited founder members and past chairmen to join her in cutting the cake. Then Phyllis Stephenson entertained us on the piano with a variety of well-loved tunes. The caterers, Marion and Andrew Hensman, had surpassed themselves with the sumptuous buffet. Lorraine Olsen had made a super fruit birthday cake and Marion Hensman had iced it beautifully.

Each lady at the party was able to take home a superb commemorative Golden Jubilee bookmark, specially made by Marion Hayward as a keepsake to mark this special occasion. Memorabilia and photographs from the last 50 years were on display for members to look through and reminisce.

A great evening thoroughly enjoyed by all. Many thanks to the Chairman and committee for all their hard work in making it so memorable.

Beckside Pre-school There really are no limits to learning opportunities at Beckside Pre-school. We provide a safe, supportive, stimulating and fun environment to explore, helping children to grow and express themselves to their full potential and at their own pace.

Whether it’s experimenting with quantities and measures at the water table using different sizes and shapes of containers, pipes and funnels, or enhanced small world play with pirate ships and hidden treasure in the sand or expressing ourselves through singing, dancing and musical instruments, it’s all happening at Beckside!

Child-initiated activities can progress from role play together to performing a show to the rest of the pre-school - you never know what might happen next!

Food Glorious Food!

There are opportunities to encourage children to be independent at snack time where we have a self-serve snack bar. They are able to find and post their names in a posting box, learn to pour their own drinks and are able to make healthy food choices, involving them in the preparation of food.

Our next challenge is to get them to wash up afterwards!

The Great Outdoors We link indoor and outdoor play so that children can move freely. If it’s wet we just pop on our wellies and waterproofs and we’re ready to play! The outdoor canopy provides us with an all-weather play area.

To encourage their interest in the natural world, the children recently observed the life cycle of butterflies, as they were transformed from caterpillars to chrysalides and finally to butterflies. The children showed curiosity in how and why things happen and watched as we released the butterflies into our sensory garden when they were ready to fly away!

It’s good to talk Children also have lots of opportunities to listen and talk, especially at ‘circle time’.

This is a time when we welcome everyone to our pre-school and learn different ways we can say ‘hello’ to each other in other languages. The children are also learning how to sign ‘good morning’. We hold a shell to take turns to speak and listen.

Circle time engages children in everyday conversation - they always have lots of news to share with us! We learn days of the week and talk about the weather.

We had a visit from the Bookstart Bear, who caused a lot of excitement and afterwards the children were able to access the library van to look at and choose some books. Children take turns to look after Rosie Reading Bear, supporting parents in developing their child’s language and literacy at home and making sure they have lots of opportunity to listen and talk. Rosie has a diary for the children to tell us if they enjoyed the story, found it funny, or if it’s a favourite book.

Behind the Scenes All of these opportunities are made possible by our very caring, dedicated and qualified staff, who work hard to plan for their key children through observation and assessment, following their interests and planning their next steps, as well as developing a genuine bond with the child (and child’s parents) and offering a settled relationship. Learning opportunities are achieved through both child and adult initiated learning, working towards the Early Learning Goals and covering the six areas of learning. We also incorporate the Elklan accredited course which promotes and supports communication skills for the under 5’s - especially those with speech, language and communication needs - into our practise, working with families to give advice and support. All our staff attend regular courses to enhance their continuous professional development and to keep up to date with good practise.

Children and their families enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ picnic with us in July - thank you to ALS for providing the outdoor games again! And once again we had some fantastic costumes for our theme as Princes and Princesses in the Nettleham Carnival.

Many of you have been knitting throughout the year and we thank you for all the scarves, hats, gloves, etc, that we have already received.

As you know, we are asked to make our boxes suitable for a family and I note that the boxes this year will again be sent to Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine.

SIGHT SAVERS You may remember that I promised in the last edition of Nettleham News to update you on the total eventually sent to Sight Savers as a result of fundraising before and after Easter.

Whilst I was able to let you know the grand sum of £253.00 had been raised at the Coffee Morning, it was only after the Easter holidays I was able to collect an additional £33.50 from Glynis at the salon. A very sincere thank you again to Glynis for allowing the sale of chicks and bunnies and to all you kind folk who purchased them. A great result - thank you.

Win Rollin also sold a further £10.00 worth of chicks and bunnies, so thank you again Win for your help.

As you can see, it took only the small addition of a few pounds to round the amount sent to Sight Savers up to £300.00.

That really brings you all up to date once again.

Nettleham Pre-school Oh my goodness what an eventful end of year we had at Nettleham Pre-school!

We had a fantastic sports day, in which every child joined in and had a wonderful time. We had to put on several parents’ races to accommodate all our competitive parents too!

The Pre-school have had to have some work done to our store rooms and many thanks to Liam and Luke for their help.

Also thanks must go to Thompson Skip Hire who very kindly loaned us one of their skips for free to get rid of all the rubble and rubbish.

We have had several fund-raising events recently too. These include our very soggy (but successful) Cake Sale on The Green on probably the wettest day in July, a Jumble Sale and the fun Quiz Night held at the White Hart in Nettleham. Thank you to everyone who continues to support the Pre-school and to the Committee who have organised these fun events for us.

On a beautiful day at the end of July we held an Open Day with face painting, refreshments (including Sandra Smith’s fantastic homemade cakes!), lots of activities and even a visit from the ice cream van. Everyone enjoyed the day and we hope to make them a regular event in the pre-school calendar.

A huge well done to both Vicki and Suzanne, the two deputies at the Pre-school. Vicki has now completed her Level 4 qualification in Early Years Childcare and Suzanne has gained a First Class Honours Degree in Early Childhood Studies from Bishop Grosseteste University College! Suzanne also received an award in recognition of academic achievement at her graduation in July. We are all so proud of you both. Suzanne is now working on the final stages of her Early Years Professional Status qualification, which she hopes to complete by the end of the year.

Finally some exciting news for the setting.

We are now able to open from 8.30am 3.30pm and take children from the age of 2 years rather than the current 21/2.

Nettleham Library News Self-service: Update The response from our customers to the new self-service machines, and shelving layout, at Nettleham Library has been generally positive, although we do appreciate that the change isn’t everybody’s preferred option. These have been big changes for all of us to adapt to don’t forget that we are still available to help, give advice or simply to chat.

We have listened to feedback on all our changes from customers and, where we can act on suggestions ourselves, we have: for example: realigning some shelf units to make it easier for customers to follow the fiction sequence, and increasing the space around the study table and large print section for easier accessibility. We have also introduced shelf signage throughout fiction to subdivide this large section into smaller A – Z chunks to aid locating authors. We also plan to do something similar throughout non-fiction to allow for quicker identification of individual subject areas. Feedback which we can’t address ourselves is passed to senior colleagues.

Please remember to always have your library card with you as the self-service kiosks can’t be used without one.

Don’t forget that the machines do NOT automatically renew your books for you - the staff can show you how to do this.

We also recommend that you always obtain a printout receipt as we no longer date stamp the books - this printout tells you what you have on loan and when each item is due back.

We now use a computerized booking system for when you want to use a computer. This means that you can telephone even when we are closed, and our colleagues in the call centre will be able to book you a computer at the library.

You will need a library card in order to be able to use the public computers, as well as a PIN number, which staff can give you (this takes 24 hours to become active).

Replacement cards After a long amnesty, we began charging once more for replacement cards from 1 August. A replacement card is £2.00.

Mobile Library Van As detailed in the last issue of Nettleham News, the mobile library has changed the days, times and locations of its visits to Nettleham. Please do pay it a visit - the staff love to see as many people as possible and using it will not jeopardise the

opening times or sustainability of the static library. We know we can’t be open as many days as everyone wants and the mobile library is there to supplement and complement the library service you receive in your village.

New Online resources 1. Who Else writes Like ...?

Lincolnshire Libraries have recently subscribed to the online version of Who else writes like ...? For many years we had a hardcopy book version to help customers find new authors to read, but now you can go to our website and click on the relevant link.

The online version has much more going for it than the old book format: ●

2. Lincs To The Past An exciting new website called ‘Lincs to the Past’ has recently been launched, which will serve as a cultural gateway to collections held in the county’s museums, including marriage certificates, birth certificates and images of artefacts.

There are over 500,000 images available including a timeline of available records going all the way back over 2,000 years.

Residents of Lincolnshire will be able to browse through their ancestors’ lives and piece together their family tree.

Author Visits During summer term we hosted two events by local author Georgia Twynham to which we invited the two year 6 classes from Nettleham Junior School. Georgia gave an engaging talk about her work followed by an extended question and answer session with the children. Georgia has currently published two out of a planned six-book series: The Thirteenth and The Turncoats.

Her books are fast increasing in popularity and are highly recommended by the staff.

If you like sci-fi and fantasy laced with a good dose of real-life, then this is the series for you!

Summer Reading Challenge Over the summer holiday we again ran our Summer Reading Challenge. This national event for 4 -11 year olds, is co-ordinated

by The Reading Agency, with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children’s reading. The challenge is simple - to read six or more library books over the summer and receive stickers and other small rewards in return.

This year the theme was Circus Stars and our children who took part really enjoyed it. Congratulations to everybody who managed to read six or more books.

Courses in the Library Regrettably, with the cuts the Council has had to make in recent months, the Library Service no longer has an outreach team.

This means that we can no longer offer our popular in-house Silver Surfers and Family History courses.

The HAIKU After consulting an expert, I now know the definition of a Haiku which appeared in the last edition of the magazine, was not quite correct.

They should not have a title.

A classic haiku has seventeen syllables, arranged in lines of five, seven and five syllables repectively.

However, many haiku writers feel this is not necessary, as English is a very different language from Japanese (the language of the original haiku).

The Computer Swallowed Grandma!

The computer swallowed grandma.

Yes, honestly its true!

She pressed ‘control’ and ‘enter’ And disappeared from view.

It devoured her completely, The thought just makes me squirm.

She must have caught a virus, Or been eaten by a worm.

I’ve searched through the recycle bin And files of every kind; I’ve even used the Internet, But nothing did I find.

In desperation, I asked Google My searches to refine.

The reply from there was negative, Not a thing was found ‘online.’

So, if inside your ‘In-box,’ My Grandma you should see, Please ‘Copy’, ‘Scan’ and ‘Paste’ her And send her back to me.

Until the 6th, high pressure brought mostly cold, cloudy and damp conditions, with some mist and fog and occasional light rain or drizzle.

It was mostly changeable until the 5th, with rain or showers at times, especially on the 3rd, and also windy.

It was fine until the 7th, with plenty of sunshine and strong winds whipping up dust.

After some sunnier weather, milder air arrived and it became windier and more changeable and unsettled, with rain or showers and sunny spells from the 9th to the 11th.

Pressure became high on the 6th until the 13th and from the 7th to the 10th skies were often clear with strong warm sunshine.

It then became more settled with high pressure returning on the 18th. Any rain up to the 31st was mostly light, while the sunniest weather was from the 21st to the 25th, when it also turned milder.

A sudden change to colder weather on the 26th was followed, only three days later, by more mild weather, but during the last three days of the month pressure was lower and it became more changeable with some rain, especially on the 31st when it also became windy.

After some cloudier weather with occasional light showers, it became sunny and warm again up to the 23rd, however later that day a severe thunderstorm developed with frequent thunder and lightning accompanied by torrential rain.

During this activity 34mm of rain was collected exceeding the total for the whole of the previous seven weeks!

Sunny weather alternated with showery weather for the rest of the month, but the 30th was mostly wet, producing the highest daily total for the month.

Settled weather returned, though the 26th was cloudy with some occasional light rain. The 30th was clear, with strong sunshine and it became windy.
