Linelands It is with the greatest of pleasure that this edition of your village magazine brings you news that Linelands is to remain open for the forseeable future.

The cloud of worry and uncertainty associated with the possibility of closure of this vitally important village facility over the past months has thankfully now lifted and the staff can once again devote their time and energy towards caring for the residents (see pages 9 and 52/3).

Beware Hoax Letters!

Readers are warned that hoax letters are being sent to people in West Lindsey saying that residents’ spare bedrooms will be used to house homeless people.

West Lindsey District Council has stressed that the letters have nothing whatsoever to do with the authority.

Director of Strategy and Regeneration, Rachel North, said: “We are extremely concerned that letters claiming to be from the Council are being circulated, but we would like to reassure residents that this is a hoax.

“We are working closely with Lincolnshire Police on this issue. West Lindsey District Council will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and will not hesitate to prosecute those involved.

“We would urge anyone who receives a letter, or knows where it originated, to contact either us or the police with information.”

The letters, which appear to be on official West Lindsey District Council headed paper, claim to be from the Housing Team.

They state that because of an increasing number of homeless people, the Council has arranged for a family to move in with them. It also claims they will be paid and they need to collect the homeless people from the railway station in Lincoln.

The information is NOT TRUE. Cllr Irmgard Parrott was alerted by a letter circulating in Cherry Willingham. She said: “I was horrified to hear these letters were being circulated, causing unnecessary distress to residents.

“I want to reassure people and tell them not to worry as the letters are simply not true. If anyone does receive a letter, we would urge them to contact both the Council and the police.“

Parish Council News News from the Parish Council Here is the first quarterly report for 2011. If there are any topics on which you would like more information, please contact the Parish Office.

Precept 2011 The Parish Council confirmed, at its meeting on 11 January, the precept for 2011/12 at £111,886. This represents an increase of less than £9 per annum per household (1,570 households).

This increase is due to the loan repayments for the re-roofing of the village hall (please see below), the removal by West Lindsey District Council of the ‘per capita’ subsidy (£3,021), Parish Elections costs (£2,000) due to WLDC decision to implement Whole Council Elections in 2011 (despite the fact that Nettleham held parish elections in 2010), the Parish Council’s decision to set aside an additional allocation to project reserves of £3,500 and necessary inflationary increases on utilities, etc.

Village Hall The Village Hall Committee has approached the Parish Council and requested assistance towards the construction of a new roof. This matter was finalised by the Council on 11 January 2011 and the Council agreed to take out a loan of £50,000 for the new roof. The Village Hall Committee has produced a Business Plan for the village hall and entered into a Memorandum of Understanding which agrees to set aside an amount of money by both the Village Hall Committee and the Parish Council each year for future capital works.

Skatepark Proposals A Public Meeting was held on 18 January to report to residents on the current situation with the proposals for a possible skatepark in Nettleham. An updated report was presented by the Council’s consultants: Groundwork Lincolnshire. In an interactive discussion, it was clear that residents and skateboarders present viewed Mulsanne Park as a preferred option, and felt that any proposals for the Rugby Club site were just too far in the future and were less attractive on location grounds.

Two possible sites were considered at Mulsanne Park (the previous boules area, possibly extended, and the area behind the tennis courts). Neither was a clear favourite with the skateboarders, both sites having merits and drawbacks. No decision has been made by the Parish Council on any aspect of this proposal, and it is the intention that, after receiving a final report and recommendations from Groundwork Lincolnshire, the Council will debate the matter at either its meeting on 22 March or 20 April 2011.

Play Areas At Larch Avenue we have arranged for the replacement of the edging around the play surfaces and for the gaps between the tiles to be filled in.

We have also repaired a rip in the grass matting under the swings at Bill Bailey’s Field.

Nettleham Beck The Council has been monitoring for some time the condition of the Beck wall just behind the Old School, where the retaining blocks are gradually moving and thereby creating a possible hazardous situation.

Ownership of the Beck at this point has not been established. Although the pathway is an adopted footpath, Lincolnshire County Council has stated that this does not include responsibility for maintenance, however, they have provided advice on engineering aspects. The Parish Council considered the situation at its 11 January meeting and has established a small working group to monitor the situation and to establish the optimum way to proceed.

Council Hire Rates The Property Committee has recommended to the Parish Council (who will decide on 21 February) that no increase be made in hall hire rates, and that this be reviewed in July.

In respect of allotments, the Committee recommended that rents for a half-plot be increased to £17.50 from 1 November 2011.

The December Snows Unsurprisingly the Parish Council received a number of comments and complaints about the uncleared pavements following the snow in December. The responsibility (and budget) for road and pavement clearance (or non-clearance) rests with the Highways Department of the Lincolnshire County Council. The Parish Council telephoned the County Council on a daily basis during the problem period, with both specific and general requests for clearance of dangerous situations. As residents will have observed, only after some considerable time was any significant action taken.

The Parish Council has also specifically asked for All Saints Lane to be added to the standard highway gritting schedule, and is currently awaiting a reply.

The Parish Council is actively seeking volunteers to assist with snow clearance in any future severe weather conditions. The Council is also requesting details of any elderly and vulnerable residents who may need assistance during times of severe weather. These details would be made available to the relevant services and would be kept by the Parish Office and

InterConnect 3 Bus Service Late in 2010 the Parish Council was given to understand that Stagecoach was considering withdrawing the InterConnect 3 bus service from the village. Representations were made to Stagecoach and a reply was received, from which the following is the relevant extract: “At present time there are no plans to withdraw InterConnect 3 from Nettleham. During a recent spell of road works the route was temporarily withdrawn from the village, but on completion of this work the service has resumed normal operation.

Should any changes to InterConnect 3 be contemplated in the future, this will be subject to discussions between Stagecoach East Midlands and the transport authority: Lincolnshire County Council. The County Council would brief district and parish councils accordingly.”

Information has also just been received from Stagecoach that due to poor take-up of the Lincoln - Newark connection, this service will be withdrawn and the InterConnect 3 timetable put back to how it was between Lincoln and Grimsby (via Nettleham).

Elections Although Local Council elections were held in May 2010 West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) have now decided to change the way in which the Council is elected, and will be moving to Whole Council Elections.

This means that District and Parish Elections will all be held on a regular 4-yearly cycle from this year.

The consequence is that Local Council elections, for the full Council, will be held on 5 May 2011. WLDC have also resolved that Parish Councils will need to conform to the same timescale, and will therefore have to hold elections

on the same date, despite having only had elections in 2010.

If the Parish Council election is uncontested the District Council have agreed to reimburse the costs, but if the Parish elections are contested the cost has to be borne by the Parish Council at a cost of approximately £2,000.

Tree Maintenance The Parish Council’s annual tree maintenance programme should be well under way by the time this spring edition of Nettleham News is published and distributed.

Trimming work will be undertaken in several areas, particularly at Riverdale and upstream towards the village hall, and at the junction of Kingsway and Washdyke Lane, where tree growth is potentially impeding the flow of water in the Beck.

One or two diseased trees are also to be felled, in particular a plane tree on Wold View and a Silver Birch on Beckside. A couple of trees on Green Lane are also to be removed. In all cases (and any others) replacement trees, appropriate to the surroundings, will be planted. A yew tree at the southern entrance to Vicars Wood has also been felled, due to the close proximity of the three yew trees, thereby allowing the remaining two trees additional space to grow.

Possible Change of Meeting Start Time from 2012 It has been suggested that Parish Council meetings could start earlier than the present 7.30pm and the Council would like to know what residents think of this suggestion.

Fieldpaths Committee At the last meeting of the Fieldpaths Committee, the increased occurrences of horse dung being left on fieldpaths and footpaths was mentioned. It is, of course, acknowledged that horses are unable to choose when and where they need to ‘go’, but consideration of riders for other users of the fieldpaths and footpaths would be appreciated.

Letters from Readers Two Old Photographs of Nettleham in 1939 Enclosed are two photographs taken from the top of the church tower in 1939. The house at the end of Church Street was at that time the residence and surgery of Dr Duprez. The open field on the right of the other shot was at that time known as The Park. Now it is covered with houses and the Junior School!

‘Christmas 1940’ brought back some memories. My cousin John, aged 14, and his mother came to stay. Their house had been severely damaged in the Coventry raid. On the evening when they arrived they talked about the bombing.

At last mother said, “Well, don’t let’s talk about that any more. You’ve come here for a rest.” Five minutes later the bombs landed in Lodge Lane!

I received a copy of Nettleham News (winter edition) and saw that once again Nettleham had won the “Best Kept Village” competition. Congratulations Nettleham!

John now lives on the Isle of Arran - but he still gets Nettleham News and sends them on to me. In 1941, I was stationed at Ludford Magna. Once we had to pick up a new Lancaster from Scampton and fly it to base. I asked the Skipper to fly us over Nettleham. We flew over what was then still The Park, and had a good view of the village. You are right, it was a quiet place then - despite the roar of Lancasters!

I must comment on the photograph on the front cover of the magazine - I thought it was truly enchanting and, whoever took it, got the timing just right. The colours of the sunset against the bright blue sky, with darkness just falling, made a truly wonderful photograph.

Did you take it? I know from other covers I’ve commented on that you’re a ‘dab hand’ with the camera.

A Rather Curious Tennis Team This letter, together with the photograph below, was received from a correspondent (who, perhaps understandably, wishes to remain anonymous!). I wonder if any readers can identify the members of this curious tennis team of the 1960’s?

I will have lived in Nettleham for 50 years in October 2011 and the enclosed photograph would have been taken in the mid-60s. I used to play for Longdales LTC (courts now built on, sadly) and this was taken at Eastgate LTC prior to a Lincolnshire League match. At that time all member clubs sported grass courts.

In those days we used to think that photographs did not lie and this one does, of course, bear that out.

The snap merely makes the statement that

I was indispensable to the team. Some team members are still with us, but I don’t think any still live in the village and so challenge this view.

I was say 32 years of age at the time and am now near to 77 years, so it will be interesting to see whether the “you haven‘t changed a bit” holds water in my particular case.

Irrespective of this diversion please do carry on your excellent work on the publication.

I also think that the VDS was delightful!

LINELANDS The people of Nettleham are to be thanked for the support they have given to the campaign to keep Linelands open. They are also to be congratulated on their part in making that campaign successful, because Lincolnshire County Council has, at least in the medium term, withdrawn the prospect of privatising the home.

Linelands is one of three homes that the campaign has saved, and we don’t think it’s a coincidence that the campaign for Linelands was one of the best organised in the county, with strong and vocal support from the local community. On behalf of all the Unison members who work there, I would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to the cause. No matter how small that contribution may have seemed, it was vital in enabling the staff to go on doing what they do so well - providing care to some of the most vulnerable people in your community.

We’re sorry that the Council is still proposing to close and privatise services in other parts of the county, but the fight on their behalf will continue. And I believe that the success of the people of Nettleham in keeping Linelands open will be an inspiration to others.

Letters from Readers Growing Concerns about the Village First of all my congratulations to the Parish Council. We have elected a number of hard working, conscientious people and it is not by chance that the village has won the Best Kept Award for the past three years.

One note of caution, however, in that the Parish Precept is escalating at an alarming rate. The charge cannot simply go on increasing at percentages several times the increase in wages, salaries and pensions.

I do hope Terry Williams and his team are now focusing on using their skills to reduce costs.

More generally, the village continues to grow and in itself this is a good thing if it is properly managed. Who knows, at this rate in the near future we may attract a dentist to make our facilities just about complete.

One worry I have about the increasing number of people and facilities in the village is also having the supporting transport infrastructure. Traffic is now at such a high level that we often see vehicles queuing almost the length of our High Street. Deepdale Lane is an absolute must

NO BREAD PLEASE Having seen many people feeding the ducks on The Beck white bread - the piece below from the QI page of the Daily Telegraph makes interesting and disturbing reading for our duck population: White Bread Feeding bread to ducks is cruel. White bread has very little protein or roughage and encourages the young birds to put on weight very rapidly, causing the heavier soft tissue to pull their wing bones out of alignment. This condition, known as ‘Angel Wing’, can lead to severe distortion and even death.

I am sure those feeding white bread to our ducks are not aware of this information it may deter them from continuing and help them to consider giving the correct duck food in future.

for widening, preferably with peak-time traffic lights onto the A46. The village green area is also congested and in my opinion would benefit from a one-way system to facilitate movement - particularly that of buses.

Most importantly we need to encourage people to get out of cars when possible.

In this connection creating pavements the length of Lodge Lane and Greetwell Road would I feel contribute. My wife and I frequently walk these and we understand, given the current traffic volumes on these roads, why we do not see many others adopting this mode of transport, when it would benefit all if they did so.

Of course, I know these things also cost money. I trust our District Councillors are making it clear to West Lindsey and through our MP that the extra revenue eminating from an expanding Nettleham in increased Council Tax is, at least to a large extent, being ploughed back into the village.

SUDBROOKE WHIST CLUB Nettleham News is passed on to me from time to time, and I always find it a good read.

We are regularly in the village for various activities that take place, to say nothing of the shops, post office, pub lunches, surgery, etc.

We do, however, have one activity here in Sudbrooke that doesn’t seem to be on offer in your village and that is the Whist Club. We play on Thursday afternoons in the village hall and do have some Nettleham people join us. You are guaranteed a game and don’t need a partner, so do please come along, we’re only a couple of miles away and would love to see some new faces. All Out Elections Since its creation in the 1974 Local Government Reorganisation, West Lindsey District Council has held elections for a third of its Councillors in 3 out of every 4 years, with the Lincolnshire County Council election held in the 4th year.

Parish Councils have been elected at the same time as one of the District Council elections, to save expense.

For various reasons, including the ongoing boundary review and the potential saving to be made, West Lindsey Councillors have now voted to go for an ‘all out’ election in May 2011 with the next election, probably on new ward boundaries, in May 2015.

As a consequence of this, Nettleham Parish Council, which was only ‘re-elected’ last May without a contest, will be subject to an election again this year, to serve until 2015.

Nettleham Parish Council spends approximately £100,000 of your money every year from your Council Tax, are consulted on all local planning applications, administer The Old School, Mulsanne Park and the village playing fields, among its many responsibilities.

You may be entirely happy with the current Parish Councillors, who may stand again, or do you want to be involved yourself?

Do you know another resident (perhaps your partner?) who is sufficiently interested, or are you happy to leave it all to someone else?

Anyone eligible on the Register of Electors for the Parish can stand for election to the Nettleham Parish Council to serve the public for the next 4 years.

12 seats are available and, if you are interested in standing or know someone who you think could do this public duty, then nomination papers and full explanatory leaflets will be available from either West Lindsey District Council or Nettleham Parish Council Office at the Old School, Nettleham.

The latest advice is that nomination papers need to be either sent, or delivered, to the returning officer at West Lindsey District Council to arrive between March 7 and noon on 4 April 2011.

Guarding Against Future Floods in Nettleham In 2007 the centre of the village of Nettleham suffered serious flooding following a period of prolonged heavy rainfall.

The flooding affected 22 properties internally, and arose from a combination of overflow from the village Beck and overloading of the drainage system.

Extensive use of sandbags, distributed by the Parish Council and West Lindsey District Council, mitigated the effects of the flooding to some extent.

In a subsequent review of events, in which very helpful guidance and assistance was provided by West Lindsey District Council, the Parish Council put in place a number of procedures to be adopted in future to prevent, or minimise, as far as possible, a similar flood event, including the appointment of two flood wardens, and the preparation of an Emergency Plan, etc.

At a practical level, whilst the provision of sandbags is a standard response to flood alerts, there are problems with storage and durability - sandbags generally have to be replaced every 2/3 years as the hessian deteriorates.

The Council discovered an innovative product: Aqua-sacs, which are stored flat, but which contain a gel which causes them to expand when they become wet. Their additional advantage is that they are reusable once dried out they revert to their original flat state.

Although initally more expensive than ordinary sandbags, their longevity and durability is much greater and in addition they occupy a much smaller area when stored - a crucial factor for Nettleham Parish Council, which has very limited storage space available.

Advantage was taken of the West Lindsey District Council Flood Management Grant scheme, which grant aids community projects for flood prevention. This enabled the Parish Council to purchase 50 of the new Aqua-sacs and to dispose of the majority of the old hessian sacks which were nearing the end of their useful life.

Win a Selection of Tasty Seasonal Cheeses People are increasingly requesting local organic produce in preference to other mass-produced food and although they may not necessarily be looking for organic cheese, if it is, then this is regarded as a real bonus.

Organic is now becoming more popular than ever, possibly because prices are now starting to drop and they are even more competitive. This may be due to a number of reasons, but because organic farmers frequently promote fruit and vegetable box schemes, the positive ethos associated with organic produce is being assimilated into the public consciousness.

The popularity of Farmers’ Markets has also driven up the requests for local products.

People like to know the provenance of the food they eat and that what they are buying from local artisan producers is natural, nutritious, wholesome and also traceable. The news is full of warnings about global warming and the effects it will bring and understandably people want to do their bit by cutting down on the ‘travel and delivery miles’ on the produce they eat. Buying locally, of course, helps towards this commendable aim.

The French, of course, have been buying locally for years. If you go to any French market town, the cheeses on display will be predominantly local, usually at different stages of maturity and from a range of very different artisan cheese makers.

Cheese should not be something to be kept just for special occasions and if eaten in moderation is a wonderfully healthy product, full of vitamins, protein, and enzymes. Many people, particularly women, say they do not eat cheese or dairy products because it is perceived as being fattening, but overlook the fact that cheese is excellent for building healthy bones and preventing osteoporosis in older age.

Ten Steps to the Perfect Cheeseboard There are no fixed rules to the perfect cheeseboard - personal preferences and tastes should always be the order of the day.

However, with the guidance of a good cheesemonger, who will encourage you to taste a range of products before purchasing, you should be able to create a truly memorable feast of cheese.

1 Buy your cheeses as close to the time of eating as possible, to enjoy them at their very best.

2 Look especially for seasonal cheeses at the peak of perfection such as Ragstone Goats logs and Berkswell ewes milk cheese, which are rich and abundant in the early summer months, or Colston Bassett Blue Stilton which is stunning in the winter months.

3 Ensure you have a range of textures and flavours, fresh, soft, firm, blue, in varying strengths and styles - try including a goat or ewe milk cheese for interest. Also perhaps consider some specialist flavour-added cheeses for extra colour and taste.

4 Buy a selection of smaller pieces of cheese, or look for a larger cut of a cheese in superb condition, such as a perfectly ripe Brie de Meaux.

6 Pair your cheese with crusty bread and biscuits and fresh farmhouse butter.

Spreading blue cheese on butter makes the blue flavour much milder.

Contrasting sticks of crunchy celery, fresh and dried fruits, fruit pastes, baked fig balls and chutneys are all excellent accompaniments.

7 Display your cheeses on wood, granite or slate boards. Alternatively, serve guests with individual plates of cheeses and savoury biscuits, rather than passing a board around the table.

Cheese is a wonderful convenience food too, needing very little cooking. It’s quick to prepare, very tasty and relatively cheap compared to buying pre-prepared fast food. You can buy your cheese plain and simple, or with a myriad of added flavours.

8 Label your cheeses to allow your guests to make an informed choice.

9 Make sure you allow your cheeses to come to room temperature before serving, to allow the flavours to develop.

Try a slice of Y-Fenni Welsh cheese on toasted bread and grill until hot and bubbling to appreciate the crunch of mustard seeds popping on the palate, with a hint of ale to add warmth and flavour.

You really can’t get a quicker, tastier meal than that!

Nettleham Woodland Trust The winter months are relatively quiet for NWT members, but there was plenty going on during 2010 and this year, come the spring, there will be lots more work to do.

Wooden furniture A number of benches and picnic tables, generously donated by organizations or individuals (often as memorials to family members) have been installed.

Hibernaculum A hibernaculum was constructed near Beatles Pond using rubble and logs, roofed with sods of earth. Our great-crested newts now have the option of five-star accommodation!

Wooden furniture A bird feeding station has now been erected on which appropriate food can be located to enable bird-watchers to observe the visiting birds as they come to feed.

Natural regeneration Funding from the British Council’s ‘Connecting Classrooms’ programme has enabled fencing to be installed in the south wood to create a 12m x 12m enclosure to be used by schools in international comparative studies. The first visitors were teachers from Afghanistan in November 2010.

Wetland planting We have been successful in an application for an LCC Community Wildlife grant of £500 for plants, which will be added to the wetland in the North Wood in March.

All abilities area A major initiative in 2011 will be the first steps in developing an All-abilities Route at Monks Wood, starting from the second entrance along Ashing Lane.

From 5.00pm: Everyone is welcome to come to Monks Wood for a walk.

There will be activities for beavers, guides and scouts from local villages, and light refreshments will be available

On Tuesday 25 January, NWT helped 400+ schoolchildren plant 100 trees in the grounds of Ermine Primary School. The trees, which were donated by British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, are oak, silver birch, beech, wild cherry and rowan.

Poppy Appeal: Nettleham 2010 Because of several additions to our list of house-to-house collectors, we are now able to cover most of Nettleham. We do feel, however, that some routes are too large for one person and ideally they should be halved. We would therefore welcome any offers of help with these collections and any additional assistance with the counting of money would be most helpful.

Except for two occasions in Nettleham since 1997, we have been able to increase our contribution to the Appeal and 2010 was no exception.

And yet in one way it was exceptional, inasmuch that not only did we exceed the 2009 total, but also broke all existing records, thanks again to the generosity of village residents.

It is difficult to see where any one factor accounted for this wonderful result, but existing situations in the various war zones undoubtedly played a major part. It says a great deal for the awareness that people have of what is happening.

In 2010 we were able to raise the magnificent figure of £3,023.02, which is £358 up on 2009. Of this total, £1,693.71 came from house-to-house collections, whilst business and commercial outlets produced £1,182.90. An additional sum of £146.41 was received from a church collection. My records show this to be the highest amount ever achieved in the village of Nettleham.

Even allowing for the increased population of our village over the years, it is indeed a wonderful result. Our house-to-house collectors did their usual magnificent job, with some producing very high totals.

I make no apology for saying yet again just how much their efforts are valued and appreciated.

A Bright Jewel in Winter

Perhaps there is also someone who may be interested in taking over as Poppy Appeal Organiser in the future. I am sure that my colleagues would agree that we are an ageing group that can’t go on forever!

In order that the Poppy Appeal in Nettleham can continue to develop and flourish, then some forward planning is required, with the role of Organiser vitally important. The work would suit a younger person with some administrative experience, although that is not essential.

Finally, can I once again thank everyone for their efforts in helping to make 2010 a record year.

Life Lesson During my second month of college, we were given a quiz to complete.

I breezed through the questions until I came to the the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”

Was this was some kind of joke?

I had seen the cleaning woman - she was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?

Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would really count toward our final marks.

“Absolutely”, said the professor.

“In your careers, you will meet many people - all are significant - they deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say: hello.”

I thought readers might like to know that Percy the peacock is fine and well.

He moved into our conservatory during the bad winter and took a liking to lying by the fire!

Please remain vigilant and contact us with anything that you feel is suspicious. Other information is also welcome, as it always has been. Many people have contacted us over the past few months and the information they have provided has been very useful. Please keep it up, and do remember that all information received will be kept strictly confidential.

The priorities for the Neighbourhood Policing Team at present is: ●

Taking from motor vehicles in the Cherry Willingham and Fiskerton areas.

Anti-social behaviour on the A15, Old Coach Road, Riseholme - this involves the use of off-road motorcycles in this area on both the public footpath and the adjacent farmer’s land.

●

Dangerous and inconsiderate parking around the schools in our area (9 schools in total)

●

Anti-social behaviour around the Bowls Club, Village Hall and Play Park in Bardney village.

The next meeting of the Community Panel is being held on 9 February 2011 when the priorities will be reviewed and new ones set, if necessary.

Over the last few weeks we have had reports of ‘break ins’ to motor vehicles in Fiskerton and Cherry Willingham.

As these villages are not a million miles away, these thieves could easily move onto this area, so please make sure that your vehicle is locked and secure and that you do not leave valuables on show in your vehicle. Most of the vehicles that have been broken into have had some item of value on show in the vehicle such as SatNav, wallets, ipods and handbags, etc.

Either take them out of the vehicle, or lock them in the boot out of sight.

Some of these vehicles were on the drive and unfortunately had been left unlocked, so these unscrupulous people did not even have to break into the vehicle.

I know that we keep bringing up the same things every winter, but can I once again remind people about riding around on bikes with little or no lights and wearing dark clothing.

On these dark nights please make sure that you have adequate lighting on your bicycle and that of your child.

If your child is a paperboy/papergirl, please ensure that they are wearing something that makes them visible when they make their way around the village.

On the same lines can I remind people when driving in snow or ice that vehicles MUST be cleared of snow and ice. It is an offence to drive a vehicle with snow and ice dropping off the

vehicle causing a hazard to other road users. Make sure windows are fully cleared and not just a little circle cleared in the middle of the screen.

This is a very dangerous way of driving and I have attended accidents where this has been the direct cause.

Over the past twelve months we have made a number of visits to the local Cubs and Brownies in the area to advise them on Road Safety and not talking to strangers, among other things. If you run such an organisation or belong to another club, school or society and would like us to pay a visit to give a talk, or just to drop in and say hello, then please contact us at your convenience.

Please keep an eye out if you have an elderly, or vulnerable person living near you. Be a good neighbour!

Nettleham Medical Practice Incorporating Cherry Willingham Surgery GP Changes

‘Green Issues’

Dr Ian Lacy will be retiring from the practice at the end of June 2011 after 24 years of service. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the practice and by many patients. We wish him the very best in his new ventures.

The practice has been looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint. During the last year we have moved to a company which securely shreds all of our paper waste and then recycles it. We also had two sun tubes installed in the new waiting room at Nettleham. To complement these, we have chosen to have solar panels installed on the roof at Nettleham to produce electricity which can be used by the practice during the week, with any residual electricity sent to the national grid.

Online Appointment Booking If you have visited our website recently you may have noticed that you can now book some routine appointments online. We have only just added this facility and at the moment have only permitted a small number of appointments to be booked this way until we have chance to monitor the uptake and receive feedback from patients.

If you would be interested in using this service, you will need to register for online access by coming into the practice and bringing a form of photo ID (passport or driving licence). After two working days you can collect your unique username and PIN for this service. If you are already registered to order repeat prescriptions online, you do not need to register again and can start to book appointments online.

Voluntary Driver Scheme 2010 was another successful year for the scheme with a 250% increase from the 10 months of 2009 in the amount of appointments we covered where transport was required by patients. Due to its popularity in 2010, we have been able to reduce the price of the fares. We hope to continue with this level of service throughout 2011.

Save Our Forests The government is planning a massive sell-off of our national forests. They could be auctioned and fenced off, run down, logged or turned into golf courses and holiday villages.

We can’t let that happen. We need to stop these plans. National treasures like the The Forest of Dean, Sherwood Forest and The New Forest could be sold off. Once they are gone, they will be lost forever.

Aah...Memories Someone asked me the other day: “What was your favourite ‘fast food’ when you were growing up?”

“We didn’t have ‘fast food’ when I was growing up,” I informed him, “All the food was slow.”

“C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?”

“It was a place called ‘home’” I explained.

“Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.”

By this time, he was laughing so hard that I didn’t dare tell him the bit about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood, if I’d figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans, set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country, or had a credit card.

My parents never drove me to school.

I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds and only had one speed (slow) or I walked.

We didn’t have a television in our house until I was 10. It was, of course, black and white with probably a 14” screen and the station went off the air at 10.00pm, after the epilogue and national anthem; it came back on the air at about 6.00am.

I never had a telephone in my room.

The only telephone in the house was on a party line and before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn’t know weren’t already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home, but milk was. All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers.

My brother delivered a newspaper, seven days a week, having to get up at 6.00am every morning.

Film stars kissed with their mouths shut, at least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all films were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity, violence or almost anything offensive.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don’t blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

45,379 SHOEBOXES SENT TO ROMANIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES Yes, a total of 45,379 shoeboxes were given to Link Romania to distribute overseas. Isn’t that wonderful?

Our total eventually reached 448 boxes, with large contributions being given by Cherry Willingham Community School and Christ’s Hospital School. It was great to realise that we were bringing joy to more than four hundred families at Christmas time. Of course, there were many more happy families when the remaining boxes were delivered and so many beaming smiles, as well as tears of joy, as a result of the boxes. Thank you all once again for caring and sharing.

Many of you are already busily knitting hats, mittens, scarves, etc, for this year’s Shoebox Appeal. Knowing as we do now how low temperatures can get in the winter months, your help is invaluable.

Nettleham Play at Perfect Pitch Nettleham Cricket Club is looking ahead to the 2011 season safe in the knowledge that their ground is recognised as one of the very best in the county. Groundsmen, John Dingley and David Ranshaw, have been recognised by the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League as the best around, with Mulsanne Park receiving the highest marks in the league for 2010.

Nettleham Chairman, Martin Connor, is delighted for John and David: “They both spend many hours ensuring the players at Nettleham have the best wickets to play on and we greatly appreciate their work. As an ECB Focus Club we are also able to offer 280 hours of coaching to local schools and the young players who subsequently join the club also benefit from the excellent facilities at Mulsanne Park”.

With teams in the ECB Premier League, Lincolnshire League Division 2, Lincoln League Premier Division and Lincoln League Division 3, Nettleham is one of Lincoln’s premier cricket clubs. Dan Wright, Australian overseas player, has been signed up for 2011 and nets to prepare for the season started on Saturday 29 January 2011 and will run through to Saturday 25

9 April at Lincoln Minster School. Under 9/10 at 9.00 am, Under 11/13 at 10.00 am and Under 15/17/seniors at 11.00 am.

The club has had unprecedented success in the last few years with both Saturday teams winning trophies and securing promotions. ECB Premier League cricket is the highest standard in the county and Lincolnshire League cricket is highly competitive, as is the Lincoln League Premier Division on a Sunday with the Lincoln League Division 3 team providing opportunities for up and coming juniors and seniors wishing to help them progress.

A number of key players have left the Lincoln area during the close season as a result of career progression and overseas travel opportunities and the Club is keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in playing for the village team. You will be assured of a warm welcome whether you are the next Alastair Cook, or simply wishing to enjoy a more social game of cricket!

Moving St George But what of its particularly Christian message? Is it not calling for us to try to bring something of how God wants us to live and treat each other into how we live our lives in 21st century England?

And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England’s mountains green?

And was the holy Lamb of God On England’s pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills?

And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills?

However, we cannot ignore the fact that patriotism can turn into something else, something nasty and insidious, something with which no church, or indeed anyone, would wish to be identified.

Bring me my bow of burning gold!

Do you like this hymn? Can you not stop yourself humming the great tune by the composer C Hubert H Parry? Does it stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood and make you cry: “God for Harry (or Elizabeth!) England and St George”?

Or perhaps you’re less keen. Maybe you think it’s a bit too mythical, not Christian enough. Maybe you think it’s undesirably nationalistic in sentiment.

This year Easter Day is quite late in the year (24 April) which means that St George’s Day (23 April) coincides with the preparations for celebrating Easter. When that happens, the church’s solution is to transfer the celebration of St George to the nearest available day (which in this case is Monday 2 May). St George is moved out of the way so that we can concentrate on celebrating the most important Christian festival: Easter.

Some people can get a bit concerned about celebrating St George (the patron saint of England) and, more generally, there is concern about using hymns with

patriotic overtones, like Jerusalem, in church. Some churches even try to discourage singing it at all. Now, I think there are better hymns, but I actually quite enjoy singing it. What’s your view?

A lot will depend on how you interpret its meaning. The “Satanic Mills”, for example, have been interpreted as representing the institutions of organised religion, or the factories of the industrialised north. I was taught that Blake was referring to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

I remember someone commenting a couple of years ago that the answer to every one of the questions posed in the first verse is: “No” (“And did those feet?”

“No”; “And was Jerusalem builded here?”

“No”), and this spurs us on to action in the second verse. Does the effectiveness of this poem lie in its many layers of meaning, its ability to speak to and inspire different groups and contexts?

For All Saints, a lot of this comes down to the fact that we are the Church OF England and so represent the national church in this community. I’m not a great fan of the attitude that wishes to remove Jerusalem from our hymn books, because it reminds me of the attitude that can be a bit sniffy about the church welcoming people in for national or civic celebrations that are held in church, like Remembrance Sunday, which I think are actually very important.

In the same way, I think it is important to welcome people in at special times of the year (like carol services or Mothering Sunday), or for special occasions (like baptisms, weddings and funerals), regardless of whether they would join us at other times - that is part of what being the Church of England is about.

Easter is one of those special times (in fact, the most special) for all Christians - so special that we will even put St George’s Day on hold, but that doesn’t mean we forget about our calling to be the Church OF and IN and FOR England and all who call it home. Whatever your views on the hymn ‘Jerusalem’, you are more than welcome to join us this Easter, or we look forward to welcoming you at another time, perhaps for an occasion that is particularly special for you.

The New Gardening Season Some advice on avoiding those aches and pains outdoors As a nation, we love our gardens and spend a considerable amount of time and money on them. However, as we rush out to get those jobs in the garden done, there is a real risk that gardeners may all too easily injure themselves.

What everyone wants is to be fit and healthy enough to actually enjoy sitting in their garden and enjoy the fruits of their labours come summer time, so here is some helpful advice from the British Chiropractic Association:

Potting and planting ●

Use a mat and kneel when doing close weeding work, or planting out.

●

When potting up your plants, it is much better to do this at a table or bench.

Take a break ●

Be clever with the paving ●

If laying a patio keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees.

●

It is sometimes better to bend one knee rather than two, as your supporting leg gives you a position of strength.

Dress appropriately ●

Don’t wear clothes that are too tight or constrict your movement.

Warm up gradually ●

Gardening is like any other exercise you should warm up gradually.

●

Don’t go straight into any heavy garden work. Start off with lighter jobs first - this will lessen the chance of muscle strain.

Vary your activity - spend no more than 20-30 minutes on any one task and take regular breaks.

●

If using railway sleepers, two people will probably be needed.

If you have to use a ladder for any of your gardening tasks, make sure you are always facing it. Rather than leaning or over-reaching, move it regularly.

●

When using the ladder, always keep your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction.

●

●

Get as close as possible to the things you are pruning; avoid overstretching to reach the area you are dealing with.

●

Invest in some long-handled secateurs to reach plants and bushes that are beyond normal reach.

Digging deep ●

●

When digging, try not to bend or twist during the movement and alternate the foot you use to drive the spade into the ground.

Raking is best achieved with short movements; don’t reach out too far.

In addition to a wheelbarrow, a specialist garden trolley or sack barrow might be worth investing in to move heavy and bulky materials around, especially if you have lots of patio pots to move.

There are wine classes too, so if you make delicious home-made wines, then this is the year to enter your best efforts in the show.

You never know - you could be walking away with one of the trophies or shields for your mantelpiece!

Make sure the ladder is firmly and safely planted in position and, if possible, have someone else standing at the bottom to keep an eye on things.

Clever pruning

You don’t have to be a member of the Club to enter anything in the show and there is a wide range of different classes in which you can enter.

Don’t twist ●

Get some wheels

Plan ahead ●

If you are planning a trip to the local DIY store and buying heavy items such as cement or gravel, buy smaller bags rather than one big bag, as they are easier and safer to carry.

●

If you do need to buy heavy items, ask an assistant at the store to help you.

●

Shovel the contents of large bags straight into smaller containers, or wheelbarrow, from the back of the car.

●

If having items delivered, have them unloaded as close to where you need them as possible - this will save the effort of moving them again.

There was a record number of entries in the show last year, and now, with everyone having to tighten their belts in these austere times, more and more people are looking to grow their own produce. Quite apart from the pleasure of eating your own home-grown fruit and vegetables, you have the satisfaction of knowing that it is tasty, chemical-free, wholesome and nutritious. And you never know - growing amongst your produce just may be that winning entry!

Divided into two sections, the first section, with the yellow direction arrows, illustrates the various historic and heritage locations in Nettleham, and the key letters and numbers contained in the text alongside the pictures will enable youngsters with a deeper interest to answer the twenty questions that appear towards the end of the publication. A fold-out aerial photograph of Nettleham clearly indicates the walking route to see the numerous points of interest around the village.

Lincolnshire Life magazine will feature the publication in one of the their forthcoming editions, encouraging additional visitors to Nettleham through the magazine’s county-wide circulation, currently 10,000+ copies.

Nettleham Pre-School The end of last year proved to be rather hectic what with all the snow, rehearsing for our nativity and having our outside area improved.

We had a lovely Nativity on our last day of term and many thanks to all the children and staff (especially Vicki) for all their hard work in ensuring it was a success. The party was also a hit where Elaine’s face painting skills were very much appreciated. We had a very special visitor who was able to take some time out of his busy schedule to come and hand out some presents thanks Santa!

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this spring will be well and truly here!

To celebrate spring our children at the pre-school will be making some beautiful, colourful collages, some of which will be displayed on the walls of the village hall where we are based.

So far this year, amongst other things, we have been busy with our Chinese New Year celebrations, tasting lots of different foods and making rabbit shaped biscuits (for the year of the rabbit), Chinese dragon puppets and taking home beautiful money envelopes filled with chocolate money.

We plan to celebrate the royal wedding in April too, and are putting the finishing touches to our very own ‘wedding’ with all the trimmings!

We are open each morning during term time, from 8.40am to 12 noon (Lunch Club 12 noon - 12.45pm) and now we are also open on a Tuesday until 2.40pm. We are an inclusive pre-school and take children from 2 years and 6 months to school age.

As a registered charity we rely heavily on donations of time, money and equipment. We do appreciate the support we receive from the local community (particularly the Village Hall Committee), as well as our own committee and the parents and carers of the children who come to our setting. Come Dine On 4 October 2010, I took part in the popular TV series “Come Dine with Me” after finally making it to the short list, following weeks of anticipation.

When I found out I’d been picked as one of the contestants, I can’t tell you how racked I was with nerves and excitement. My partner Mandy and I had only moved into our new home on Greetwell Lane the previous year the extension hadn’t been completed yet, there was still much painting to be done and we hadn’t much furniture either! I had less than two weeks before the filming was due to start and I had a nightmare of a time running around borrowing bits of furniture here and there off friends and family to make the house look good enough for all to see on prime-time TV. Seemingly, in no time at all, it was time for day one of filming!

Monday 4 October 2010 My first interview and menu read-through was filmed on the roof of the Black Horse public house in Nettleham, as I am a roofer by trade and also a regular customer there.

(The location for filming this part of the programme is always somewhere that is part of your everyday life). Howard and the staff provided delicious bacon butties and coffee for the film crew and myself - many thanks Howard!

Tuesday 5 October 2010 The first night of the dinner parties and boy!, I had the jitters so bad! A taxi collected me at 5.30pm to take me to the house of the first contestant. I had no idea where I was going or who the others involved were, still, I was really looking forward to it - after all it’s not every day you get picked to appear on a national TV show. I’d made up my mind to let my hair down, enjoy myself and get totally drunk!

I arrived at my destination in Ingham to be met by Gary, the sound technician, who fitted me with a microphone and then I waited for my turn to go to the door to be filmed being greeted by Jo - the hostess for the evening, who handed me a large cocktail which I drank rather quickly in order to steady the shakes.

I was then introduced to Justin and Margaret, my fellow contestants, along with Jo. I have to say we all got on pretty well the first night - everyone getting to know each other. The drinks were flowing and Jo’s food, although a bit of a mish-mash, actually tasted very good.

All too soon it was time to leave and do the scoring in a taxi, which drives around with the camera crew inside. I scored Jo a very reasonable ‘7’ - then home to bed.

Wednesday 6 October 2010 Today is my turn to be the host - I’ve got an awful hangover and have hardly slept a wink as I’m so nervous!

At 9.00am there is a knock on the door and in roll a crew of camera, lighting and sound men, together with the producers, who quickly go about setting up the house for my day. You simply can’t imagine the amount of equipment - my house was lit up just like Blackpool illuminations, but from the inside!

Firstly I was whisked off to the butcher’s shop in Tealby, near Market Rasen, home of the famous “Lincolnshire Viking Sausage” which I had chosen as part of my menu. I was filmed actually making the sausages because I wanted to do as much as I could to create the feeling of traditional home-made fayre.

The real work began when I returned - I had a three-course meal to prepare in front of the

camera, with the producers asking me questions as they watched every chop of the knife. Believe me, this was no easy task - the pressure was extreme to say the least. It all looks so easy when you are sitting quietly at home watching the programme on the television.

After I had finished preparing all my food, it was time to get myself ready. I had chosen the theme of BAD TASTE and I wore some very unfashionable green trousers, Hawaiian shirt and a colourful tank-top, all topped by a rather silly wig!

My guests, most of them suitably dressed in ‘bad taste’, started to arrive at 6.30pm and I showed them through to the lounge for a glass of champagne and a selection of hors d’oeuvres.

Part of my entertainment for the evening was a ‘pub bandit’ competition and the winner was presented with a trophy that I had previously had engraved with “Come Dine with Me 2010” as a keepsake of the occasion.

The guests then sat down at the table whilst I served my starter of home-made paté, home-made tomato salsa and salad. This was followed by the main course - a medley of Lincolnshire sausage on a root vegetable mash, followed by “Nigello’s” very special trifle. What can I say - a winning menu!

As the evening progressed, tension was rising between Jo and Margaret (this frequently happens on “Come Dine with Me” does it not!), but I tried not to get too involved I just wanted my night to be fun and for the event to run smoothly.

Much alcohol later, the guests started to leave one by one to do their scores and then head off home. I was pleased with my efforts and totally shattered after 16 hours of filming that day! I had used every pot, pan, plate and kitchen utensil - the mess was indescribable but never mind - I just went off to bed to get some much-needed sleep and left all that for Mandy to sort out the following day!

with Me Thurday 7 October 2010 Another day - another hangover! Today started with filming my read-through for this evening’s menu, which was filmed at Jackson’s Building Centre in Lincoln, then home to get ready for the third evening of the “Come Dine with Me” experience. I was told that the theme for this evening was to be “The Rocky Horror Show”.

Oh dear! - I’m never going to live this one down! Mandy took great delight in dressing me up in her stockings and suspenders, make-up and pink wig, along with some size 10 lady’s shoes, which she had managed to find at the last minute from a local charity shop.

Needless to say, I was drunk even before the taxi came to collect me and take me to Justin’s house in Hykeham. On my arrival, the film crew fell about in fits of laughter and made me walk up and down the street to get a good shot of my womanly ‘wiggle’ before finally allowing me to knock on the door.

Justin, the host that evening, is a well-known Drag Queen in Lincoln. His food was very tasty and he, too, had made a trifle for dessert (I thought mine was better of course!). The drinks never stopped flowing all night and I made a fool of myself doing the ‘Time Warp’. We were all enjoying ourselves,

although the ladies were at each other’s throats from time to time (which of course all makes for good viewing!).

At the end of the night I scored Justin ‘7’ and headed off home so drunk that I slept all night as ‘Frank Flirter’, still complete with wig and make-up!

Friday 8 October 2010 The final day and by this time I’m dinner party’d out, feeling very tired and very, very unhealthy!

Today’s menu read-through was filmed in the White Hart public house in the village. A few locals turned up as the producers had previously said that if anyone wanted to be seen on TV, they could sit in the background.

Later, at 5.30pm, I was taken to Margaret’s house at Welton Hill. I’m so shattered by now, but tonight being the final night, we were soon to discover who had won, so the excitement overcame the tiredness.

Margaret’s menu did actually read the best and I thought she may win the prize, but although she had put in a lot of effort, her entertainment was better than her food!

I enjoyed it all the same.

The drink was again never-ending, arguments were breaking out yet again between the women and the final set of scores was in.

Trying to play fair, I scored Margaret a ‘7’.

Justin, Jo and I sat in the lounge and Margaret appeared with the £1,000 prize and a bottle of champagne. At this point I still thought I stood a chance of winning, but really it could have been anybody. In reverse order, Jo was last, Margaret and Justin equal second and I was announced the winner!

The filming came to an end, we all said our goodbyes and I got my taxi home holding my £1,000 prize - I still couldn’t believe that I had actually won it!

It was the most amazing experience, a time I will never forget, but believe me, it was both mentally and physically draining - in fact I had to spend my winnings on a holiday to The Gambia to recuperate!

25 Years of Service Margaret Carter has been seeing schoolchildren safely across the road outside Nettleham CE Junior School now for 25 years.

To mark this considerable achievement, Margaret was presented with a certificate and special decorative paperweight by Pam Street, Road Safety Officer with the Lincolnshire County Council’s Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership.

The presentation took place in the Nettleham Junior School hall in front of the entire school on Friday 28 January 2011.

Margaret, who was born in Nettleham, married Richard in 1971. He served in the Army for 22 years, during which time they lived in several different locations including Londonderry (during ‘The Troubles’ there), Cyprus (where her daughter Amanda, who invariably accompanies Margaret at the school crossing, was born), Tidworth (Hampshire), Wroughton (in Wiltshire, where her second daughter Helen was born), Celle (Germany) and finally to Long Stanton (Cambridgeshire).

When Richard left the Army in 1984, they returned to Nettleham (amazingly to the very house where Margaret was brought up!) and Richard did some driving for Help the Aged and was also a Security Guard until he retired.

Margaret’s younger daughter Helen now lives in Newark and has a boy: Harry.

She also has a sister Christine, who lives in Bassingham and has two boys, Stephen and Richard, so Margaret is both grandma and auntie.

Many residents will remember Margaret from her time with the Lincolnshire Co-op foodstore in Nettleham, where she worked for over 14 years helping villagers with their grocery shopping.

In her spare time, Margaret is Captain of the Ladies Darts Team at the Plough Inn, and also enjoys reading.

When I joined Margaret and her daughter Amanda on a cold and frosty morning in January, she was, as usual, seeing children across the road with a cheery smile and a “Hello”, both to the children and parents, some of whom she used to see across the road when they were children!

She tells of one particular day when a parent was saying farewell to their child in the morning and said: “Have a nice day”.

“How can I possibly have a nice day” replied the little girl “I’m going to school!”.

I’m sure all the children, together with their parents, would like to wish Margaret all the best for the future and thank her for her sterling work over 25 years of service to the community.

Being Clean isn’t Always Green

1ST NETTLEHAM 4TH LINCOLN SCOUT GROUP

If you live in an area that is not connected to a main public sewer, your wastewater is likely to go to a septic tank or a package treatment plant. Your system will contain micro-organisms that help to break down the waste, so it is important that you take extra care about what you put down your drains. To keep your system healthy and working efficiently, follow this advice from the Environment Agency

Running a Scout Group with approximately 70 youth members does not come cheap, so fund-raising is an important aspect of the Scouting calendar. Many of you will be aware of the Breakfasts on the Green that Nettleham Scout Group organises in May and September. Well, the next one is planned for Saturday 14 May 2011, so do come down to Nettleham village green to show your support for our fund-raising efforts by purchasing a full English breakfast from our camp kitchen. As many regular visitors to these events will testify, it will be well worth the visit!

Only use small amounts of bleach or other cleaners, as these could kill the bacteria used to digest the waste.

It is your responsibility to look after your system. If you notice any of the following, it may indicate a problem:

Inspect the system at least once a month - a healthy system will have a surface crust and should not smell.

●

Slowly draining toilets, sinks or baths.

●

The smell of sewage around the tank.

●

Sewage backing up through the system.

●

Act immediately if you find a blockage or any sign of pollution.

●

Keep records of any maintenance carried out or waste transfer notes from when the tank is emptied.

●

Do not dispose of rags, nappies, sanitary items or other solids, as they will cause a blockage.

●

Do not empty chemical toilets into drains or septic tanks.

●

Do not allow rainwater to enter the tank or your drainage field to be flooded.

●

Do not use the connecting drains to dispose of chemicals, oils, solvents, grease or paintbrush cleaning fluids.

When your tank is emptied, you should check the contractor is registered to carry waste with the Environment Agency and is taking it to an appropriate place preferably a sewage treatment works.

Heartfelt Thanks The family of Margaret Brannan wish to express their heartfelt thanks to those villagers who went to her aid when she collapsed on The Green, on Saturday 15 January. Sadly, despite valiant efforts, the heart attack she had suffered was too severe for recovery.

Her brothers and sisters, children and grandchildren, as well as her many friends, combine their deep gratitude to all those who tried so hard to keep her with us. May she now rest in peace.

As a nurse herself, she saved, and saw pass away, many lives, in her dedicated and cherished career. She would have appreciated the desperate attempt to save her life. She had lived in Nettleham for only 6 years, but in that time had made many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Nettleham Scout Group has recently been very fortunate to receive funding from West Lindsey District Council and the Nettleham Ladies Club for the purchase of some new equipment and awards. The generosity of both organisations is greatly appreciated and gifts such as these not only significantly benefit the Scout Group financially, but also remind all that are involved in Scouting that it is appreciated and respected in the local community.

A special thank you goes to Alf Frith for his support with the application to West Lindsey District Council.

Continuing with the fund-raising theme, this term the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will all be preparing for the bi-annual Scout and Guide Gang Show that will be held on 19 March 2011 based on the theme of ‘The Great British Weather’. Over 150 youth members and adult volunteers are expected to take part by performing songs, sketches, jokes and dances in support of raising much needed funds for the Friends of Nettleham Guides and Scouts (FROGS) who own and manage the building and facilities on Vicarage Lane that many of you will know as either the Scout Headquarters or Guide Headquarters.

In the winter 2010 edition of Nettleham News, readers were reminded by FROGS in their article on page 13 that it receives income from the bottle bank in the Co-op car park. Over the Christmas period it has been great to see that the recycling containers have been well used. Please continue to use these facilities throughout the year, even though it may be easier to use the blue recycling bins at home, as you will be doing far more than simply recycling some glass - you will be helping support the Scout Group and the other youth organisations in the village.

She was one of 13 children, having been born and brought up in Manchester.

Her siblings now reside all over the world, but feel they had come to know Nettleham through the many accounts Margaret had related to them over the years, through Christmas cards, telephone calls and of course pictures, together with issues of Nettleham News which she had shared with them.

Programm A New Year is upon us. Maybe you have made some resolutions and one of them is to pick up your new camera and see what it can do. Are you at a loose end on Friday nights? If so, why not pay RB a visit at the village hall, time 7.30pm. You never know you may surprise yourself. Pigs can fly!

If you’ve other things to do, but enjoy looking at photographs taken by other people, why not pay a visit to the Gatehouse Gallery at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Burton Road, Lincoln in May. RB are holding their Biennial Exhibition and this time we are taking our inspiration from the county of Lincolnshire.

The preview of “This is Lincolnshire” is between Monday 9 and Friday 13 May with the Official Opening on Saturday 14 May 2011. The exhibition is open until the end of August between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.

AAADD (Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder) I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I head towards the garage, I notice post on the porch table that I picked up from the postman earlier. I decide to go through it before I wash the car.

I put my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the recycling box under the table and notice that the recycling box is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the recycling first. But then I think, since I’m going to be near the post-box when I take out the recycling paper anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take my cheque book off the table and notice that there is only one cheque left.

My spare cheques are in the desk in my study, so I go into the house to my desk where I find the cup of coffee I’d been drinking.

Looking for my cheques, I push the coffee aside so that I don’t accidentally knock it over. The coffee is cold, so I decide to make another cup.

As I head toward the kitchen, a vase of flowers on the worktop catches my eye - the flowers need water. I put the coffee on the worktop and discover my reading glasses that I’ve been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I’m going to water the flowers. I put the glasses back down on the worktop, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote control. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realise that tonight when we go to watch TV, I’ll be looking for the remote, but I won’t remember that it’s on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back where it belongs, but first I’ll water the flowers.

I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor, so, I put the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

At the end of the day: The car isn’t washed The bills aren’t paid There is a cold cup of coffee in the kitchen The flowers don’t have enough water There is still only one cheque in my cheque book I can’t find the remote I can’t find my glasses I don’t remember what I did with the car keys.

Starting Up in Business

NETTLEHAM TWINNING ASSOCIATION

One way of enhancing your personal prospects in the current uncertain economic climate is to start your own business.

This year it is the turn of the Nettleham “twinners” to host the visit of their French friends from Mulsanne and as usual, the Nettleham committee has been busy organizing the programme for the four-day visit, which will begin when the French coach arrives at Mulsanne Park on Saturday 23 April (St George’s Day).

However, whilst the idea of becoming your own boss is attractive, a number of dangers exist and various factors need to be considered before trading begins.

In order to make your business a success, not only must your product or service have a proven or tested market, but you must also have the skills (managerial, marketing, financial and technical), commitment and drive to succeed.

You should begin by creating a Business Plan, describing your proposed business, market, mode of operation, capital requirements and projected financial results. This document is key to your success, as no bank manager will consider lending finance without a sensible plan.

Serious consideration should be given to your choice of business structure, as this will have repercussions on the way you are taxed, your exposure to creditors and other matters. Although a sole trader is the simplest form of business, this option renders you personally liable for any debts incurred.

If you choose to form a partnership, then an agreement should be drawn up, setting out how you will all work together.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to set up a company, then you must comply with various legal regulations.

Other important matters which need to be addressed include finance, terms of trading, contractual relationships, stationery requirements, book keeping, producing annual accounts and taxation.

In addition, if you intend to employ others to work for you, you will need to be familiar with employment law and should consider providing a pension scheme.

ENTENTE CORDIALE 2011

A busy programme has been arranged which will include, as the highlight, a visit to Chatsworth, followed by an evening of dining and watching greyhound racing at Nottingham.

The main object of these exchanges of visits is, of course, renewing contact with old friends “en famille” and meeting new ones. It’s now 33 years since the original twinning agreement between Nettleham and Mulsanne was signed and over these years many strong and long-lasting friendships have been formed.

Before the Easter weekend visit however, the Twinning Association presented a “Call my Bluff” wine-tasting event at the Old School Rooms. This was a sell-out and followed the very successful “Talk and Valuation” evening with David Barby, held in October 2010 in the village hall.

Fundraising for Sight Savers What a wonderful response to our fundraising efforts for Sight Savers before Christmas.

Thank you Glynis for allowing sales in your salon of Santas, snowmen and Christmas stockings, all containing goodies and thank you ladies (and perhaps a few gents too!) for your support. This resulted in a total of £40.00 being raised for the charity.

Win Rollin raised a further £47.50 as a result of sales to friends and colleagues every penny so very precious - thank you Win for your help.

Further sales and a most generous donation of £5.00 which was handed to me on Christmas Eve, meant I have had great pleasure in sending a cheque for £100.00 to Sight Savers in support of their excellent work. Thank you all so very much once again.

Would you like to try your hand at lawn bowls?

Lawn bowls is a sport that is played by a wide range of people, male and female, from the young (you probably need to be about 10 years old in order to hold the bowl) to the not-so-young (players at 90+ are not uncommon). People in wheelchairs can play and there is a national association for visually impaired players.

Lawn bowls is played in the open air and is a good way to maintain or even develop flexibility without getting involved in excessive exercise.

The Nettleham Club, on Sudbrooke Lane, is open to literally anyone. The Club caters for all levels of skill and we offer a wide range of facilities; coaching is free if you want it. You can play for the Club in friendly matches, competitive matches and tournaments. County and National competitions are available to you and the 49

Club also has a friendly social calendar where you can meet like-minded people.

If you just want social bowling, we cater for that too.

Good News for Nettleham Ward You will have read in the Parish Council article (page 5) of the removal by West Lindsey District Council of the ‘per capita’ subsidy (£3,000) and wondered what it was all about!

This special grant to Parish Councils, to partly compensate for the cost of running Gainsborough facilities, was halved last year and has finally disappeared this year.

When in 1974 the Local Government reorganisation took place, West Lindsey District Council was formed with Welton Rural District Council and other Councils, including Gainsborough Urban District Council, merging.

WLDC took on some assets that had historically been in Gainsborough Urban District Council’s remit. This included the running and costs of the sports grounds, cemeteries and Richmond Park in Gainsborough.

Recently, after many years of trying, there has been a transfer of those assets and their running costs to the Town Council in Gainsborough, which is good news for the rest of the District.

Why should the transfer of assets in Gainsborough be a good thing for the rest of us? Well, here in Nettleham we pay a parish precept to the Parish Council and they maintain the burial ground and the sports fields (in addition to many other things), but you pay for that through the Parish Rate. We also pay a Council Tax to WLDC and from that WLDC has been maintaining the Gainsborough facilities, which are now being transferred to the Gainsborough Town Council.

In effect you and I have been paying twice, and I suspect that you probably hardly ever, if at all, have used the facilities in Gainsborough.

The cemeteries were transferred towards the end of 2008, and Richmond Park and Aisby Walk Sports Ground have now been transferred. Marshall’s and Rose’s Sports Grounds were transferred in 2010 to allow the Town Council time to readjust its precept so that there is not a huge increase in one go. The District Council will also make some savings in staff costs and maintenance - it will be interesting to watch what happens to those savings!

GAZUNDERING! House sellers are being warned to watch out for “gazundering” in the current tough conditions of the residential property market.

Gazundering is where the buyer drops his offer for the property just before contracts are exchanged. It’s the opposite of gazumping, where the seller hikes up the price, or accepts a higher offer from another buyer just before contracts are exchanged. Gazundering occurs in a buyer’s market, while gazumping tends to arise when it’s a seller’s market.

Both practices are perfectly legal; there is no binding agreement as to the price or any other term of the bargain until contracts are exchanged, which usually only happens four to six weeks after the prospective buyer’s offer has been accepted and the conveyancing process begins.

“Although it’s legal, these practices are generally a buyer exploiting his bargaining strength in a tough market, and they tend to undermine the smooth running and stability of the conveyancing system,” said Steve Derby, residential conveyancing expert with Andrew & Co LLP. Theoretically it would be possible for the buyer and seller to enter into an agreement to enter into a contract, but in practice buyers are unlikely to enter into such an agreement if sanctions, such as the loss of a substantial pre-contract deposit if the buyer backs out, are included.

Some have called for a French-style conveyancing system, where the buyer and seller enter into a contract at the outset; but opponents say that this sort of system, where a contract is entered into at the outset, is bound to be so full of escape routes that it provides no more certainty than the English system. Even if the buyer decides not to go ahead for a completely frivolous reason, they will often be released by the seller because the seller cannot keep the deposit without going to court, and, in the meantime, the house cannot be sold.

Steve added: “The English system is far from perfect, but other systems that might replace it have their own problems and frustrations.

My advice to sellers is don’t just accept the highest offer as a matter of course; instead listen to their estate agent’s advice as to whether a prospective buyer appears genuine and is in a position to go ahead.

“In the current buyer’s market, sellers might like to think about instructing their solicitors to state at the outset, when they send out the draft contract and supporting papers, that if the buyer attempts to negotiate a lower price, they will immediately insist on the contract papers being returned, which can act as a psychological deterrent to the buyer.

“They may still get challenged for a price reduction, but it can help to even the balance in current markets.”

Linelands Linelands residential home would like to express heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us during the consultation process regarding our proposed closure.

We have been overwhelmed by the strength of feeling and the positive comments that people have made about us. As you may be aware, the proposal is now to retain Linelands, Bonner House and Harrison House. We shall know more of this outcome in January 2011, but feel hopeful that we shall continue to provide services at Linelands for a while longer yet.

It was good to have people visit to see what we do during the consultation period, and I should like to extend an invitation to anyone who is interested, to contact me for a tour of Linelands and an explanation of what happens here.

By way of a quick introduction, Linelands currently has 15 beds for Intermediate Care (rehabilitation before discharge home) and 12 beds for Short Stay, which is usually pre-planned, but may also be in an emergency situation. We also have a Day Care service which caters for up to 12 people with high physical dependency on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and for up to 10 people with dementia care needs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All of our services are designed to assess need and promote independence wherever possible, so that people retain as much control of their situation as they are able.

Some people benefit from being able to socialise with others at Linelands, while others enjoy the privacy that is available if desired.

Day Care, in a separate part of the building, provides activities that are appropriate to individual ability. Whichever service people use, the feedback is generally that the atmosphere at Linelands is warm and friendly, that staff are caring and the food is good!

Could I please finish by saying a very big thank you to all of the people who donated towards the Linelands Day Care party, which was a huge success and benefited everyone who participated. This takes me back to the beginning in saying again, thank you to everyone for their help and support which is very much appreciated.

Linelands Christmas Party 2010 It is a mark of the great community spirit and respect for the elderly which prevails in Nettleham, that an appeal for donations towards a Christmas Party to be held for the residents of Linelands resulted in a magnificent total of £425.00 being donated by local businesses, many of which advertise in Nettleham News The residents of Linelands would like to sincerely thank all those who made Christmas 2010 such a very happy, enjoyable and memorable occasion for everyone.

Particular thanks should go to Malcolm Booth, a local resident who visited all the businesses in the village (and beyond) to deliver an envelope containing a letter outlining the reason for the request for a donation.

The willingness of local businesses to respond so generously and gladly to this appeal is truly heart-warming and makes one proud of this village.

Nettleham Methodist Church I expect many of you have copies at home of the King James version of the Bible! This year celebrates its 400th year as it was originally published back in 1611. I’m not going to go into the history of that momentous event, but would rather focus on the Bible’s message, which is still as powerful today as it ever was!

Many people have many different opinions regarding the Bible, but few have taken the time and trouble to actually read it from cover to cover.

As many of you may know the Bible is, in fact, a collection of 66 books, which include history, law, poetry, prophesy, wisdom, letters, the life and teachings of Jesus and much more. Sadly it is often misquoted, misunderstood and ignored, but its message still stands today in the 21st Century and is a source of comfort, direction and hope.

The central theme of the Bible is God’s relationship with his creation, which includes us! It is clear from the teaching of the Bible that God is not remote and uninterested in his creation. He is closely involved and is looking for a people to acknowledge him and come into a living relationship with him.

Somebody once said that religion is man’s attempt to find and explain God. The truth is that the Gospel is completely different! Almost the opposite in fact! The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ came from heaven to seek the lost. He is still doing that today. One of the ways people encounter him is in the pages of the Bible. From my experience as a full-time minister since 1997 I have met with many people who have become Christians through hearing God speak to them through its pages.

I would like to encourage you to read the Bible. There are many good modern translations around. If you would like assistance in selecting one, or would like to join one of our many local groups who read and study it, then do let me know and I can steer you in the right direction. Alternatively you could join with us for worship, as we always read it together to listen to what God is saying to us, Sunday by Sunday, in a church, chapel or hall near you.

Drive to Boost Tourism in Lincolnshire by Lindum Heritage Tennyson’s Lincolnshire explores the locations that inspired and were loved by the literary genius.

With recent publicity over council cuts in tourism it’s good to know some organisations are working hard to bring visitors to Lincolnshire

“Wind, Water & Steam” will explore the power and transportation sources from a bygone era, whilst detailing the beauty of the county at the same time and The Churches of Lincoln and the Town and Country Churches of Lincolnshire will further enhance external awareness of the county and the city of Lincoln.

Tour break specialist Bill Morran, the owner of Lindum Heritage is on a mission to do just that.

In 2011, the company, based at The Terrace in the heart of Lincoln, is tripling its tour programme. In the process, Mr Morran aims to introduce significantly more people to the county and increase the business’ success, which could also create job opportunities.

Lindum Heritage provides high-quality historical tours for 20-25 people at a time.

These are offered in various parts of the country, but the Lincolnshire “Runways to War”, Bomber County, which features visits to former county airbases and a wartime museum, along with the chance to climb aboard a Lancaster Bomber (one of only three working Lancaster’s left in the world), has proved particularly popular. 2011 will deliver four specific opportunities to bring people into the county on this hugely successful tour.

“I remain extremely keen to bring people into the wonderful county of Lincolnshire and almost one third of our programme of 35 tours for 2011 are based here’ said Mr Morran.

The exciting 2011 programme features two new aviation heritage breaks, including the Lincolnshire-based “Wings of War” which offers people a fantastic opportunity to sit inside the cockpit of at least seven aircraft and experience a taxi-run in a Douglas Dakota. A further aviation short break, “The American Connection”, will take participants to Cambridgeshire to explore the USAAF’s involvement in World War Two. It will feature a special day at IWM Duxford and the chance to fly in a De Havilland Dragon Rapide.

England’s Heritage and Faith, Art & Architecture tours will include a number of opportunities to further drive inward tourism into Lincolnshire - The Pilgrim Fathers will cover the county’s historical sites, which gave birth to the founders of a great nation.

Finally, a short break tour dedicated to the “2000 Years of History” in Lincoln city itself completes the county programme. Many of the county tours will have a Lincoln city hotel base. People attending often extend their stays, further enhancing inward tourism investment to Lincolnshire. The remainder of the varied and exciting 2011 programme covers, “Hands on History”, Military Heritage events, which includes Wars of the Roses (York), 1066 & The Norman Invasion, as well as Braveheart and Bonnie Prince Charlie Tours in Scotland.

These unique short breaks will provide the very special opportunity for participants to try on the clothing and armour of the period, handle the weapons and even take part in mini re-enactments if they wish to!

Special City Breaks in Canterbury and Windsor as well as two tours of Stonehenge (including private access to the stones), Hadrian’s Wall, Exploring Elizabethan England, Golden Age of Northumbria and a number of “ Hands on History” one-night tours complete the picture of significant expansion for Lindum Heritage in 2011.

Amy: My Mum Susan Elizabeth Ulyatt died age 47 at Lincoln County Hospital. She was educated at Boston High School and Lincoln College and worked as a medical secretary for 27 years in the Lincoln district. The funeral took place at Nettleham All Saints church on Monday 6 December conducted by Rev Jenny Rowley. The mourners were daughter Amy, mother Betty, brother, David, together with aunts, uncles and cousins. The church was also filled with many friends, neighbours and work colleagues. Donations of £500 have been collected for the Cystonosis UK Foundation.

You always had a sympathetic shoulder for me to cry on.

Well what I can say about my mum.

Mum you have been through a lot and I am so proud and always will be of the courage and strength you have shown over your lifetime.

Mum was a kind hearted and lovable person.

She was VERY independent, never let anything get her down, always had a smile on her face and she was hardworking too.

She was always there for other people, always putting herself last.

I always admired you for being strong and trying to teach me right from wrong.

We didn’t always agree, but you just wanted the best for me.

Mum you were the best mum in the world and I love you so much. And I will never ever stop loving you.

Without you, the world’s a lonelier place.

Whenever I needed you, you were always there.

You were always supportive and were always there to give me advice.

I will always love you. You will always be in my heart and I will never ever forget you.

Tuk-Tuk Tour 2011 In early July 2011 Lisa Gibson and Anna Hagens will be travelling over 5,000 miles through 12 countries from Lincoln to New Delhi, India, in an authentic Indian tuk-tuk.

Lisa and Anna, who are both professional youth workers, aim to raise £30,000 for the work of ‘Asha’, which they have both visited and volunteered for.

Asha is a community health organization dedicated to helping the urban poor of Delhi, working with around 350,000 slum dwellers in 48 slum colonies around the city, enabling them to transform their lives.

Both Anna and Lisa are looking forward very much to the challenge of the trip, which is estimated to take around six weeks.

SCAMS!!!

From time to time Nettleham News receives news concerning scams which are being operated in the UK. You may already be aware of them, but for those readers who perhaps may not have a computer and not receive the information, it is worth repeating the warnings here

CASH-BACK SCAM ALWAYS CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING THE CHECK-OUT! I bought items totalling over £150 and I glanced at my receipt as the cashier was handing me the bags and saw a cash-back of £40 recorded. I told her I didn’t request a cash-back and to delete it. I was informed I would have to take the £40, because it couldn’t be deleted. I told her to call a supervisor who came and said I’d have to take it.

I said NO! Taking the £40 would be a cash advance against my credit card and I wasn’t paying interest on a cash advance!

If they couldn’t delete it, then they would have to delete the entire order. So the supervisor had the cashier delete the whole order and re-scan everything! The second time I looked at the electronic pad before I signed and a cash-back of £20 showed.

At that point I told the cashier, she deleted it and the total came out correctly. The cashier agreed that the electronic pad must be defective.

Obviously the cashier knew the electronic pad was defective because she NEVER offered me the £40 at the beginning.

Can you imagine how many people went through before me and at the end of her shift how much money she pocketed?

Just to alert everyone. My colleague went to a supermarket last week. She had her items rung up by the cashier who hurried her along and didn’t give a receipt. She asked the cashier for a receipt and, clearly annoyed, the cashier gave it to her.

My colleague didn’t look at her receipt until later that night and the receipt showed a £20 cash-back. SHE HAD NOT ASKED FOR CASH-BACK! She telephoned the supermarket, which investigated, but could not see the cashier pocket the money. Apparently the cashier will key in that you requested cash-back and then hand it to an accomplice, who is the next person in the queue.

Please, please, please, check your receipts before you leave the checkout when using credit or debit cards!

I wonder how many “seniors” have been, or will be, “stung” by this one?

To make matters worse ...THIS SCAM CAN BE DONE ANYWHERE, AT ANY RETAIL OR WHOLESALE LOCATION!

CREDIT CARD SCAM This information is worth reading - by understanding how the VISA and MasterCard telephone credit card scam works, you’ll be better prepared to protect yourself.

This scam is very slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one crucial detail they need. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number they already have it.

The scam works like this: the person calling says: “This is (name), and I’m calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I’m calling to verify.

This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you recently purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for £497.99 from a marketing company based in London?”

When you say “No”, the caller continues with: “Then we will be issuing a credit to your account - this is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 to £497 - just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards.

Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?” You say “Yes”.

The caller continues - “I will be starting a fraud investigation - if you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on the back of your card and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. “Do you need me to read it again?”

Here’s the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works: the caller then says, “I need to verify you are in possession of your card.”

He’ll then ask you to “Turn your card over and look for some numbers.” There are 7 numbers: the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card.

These are the numbers you sometimes use to make internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he’ll say, “That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?” After you say, “No,” the caller then thanks you and states, “Don’t hesitate to call back if you do”, and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number.

But after we were called, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 was charged to our card!

We made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is re-issuing us with a new card and number.

What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card - don’t give it to them. Instead, tell them you’ll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of the conversation.

The real VISA told us that they will NEVER ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you’re receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you’ll see charges for purchases you didn’t make, and by then it’s probably too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

Even more remarkable is that on the following day, I got a call from MasterCard with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn’t even let him finish I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily!

Be vigilant and don’t be caught out by this all too believable scam, which can be tried with any credit or debit card!

A year on and still going strong!

In December 2009, Unit 5, 22 The Green, Nettleham (those sometimes forgotten about offices behind David Burghardt Opticians) became the home of an expanding business known as ‘esh consultancy & training ltd’ run by Nettleham residents, Edward and Sarah Hollamby.

Sarah also runs GIG (Get it Gang) from the premises. This is an action-packed Bible-based children’s activity club open to primary school age children and is run on a Saturday afternoon once a month.

2003 saw the beginning of our training and consultancy business, working in the public, education and voluntary sectors.

With tutoring, storybook days, GIG, training sessions, meetings, clubs and a new discussion forum for local business

Having worked in conjunction with small businesses, over 200 voluntary organisations and over 40 schools in the East Midlands, we have an excellent reputation for quality training and support.

Being local people, a strong sense of community was a priority in our decision to expand our business into these premises.

Our offices provide, not only a base for our work, but also a large room for our in-house training as well as community projects, which are so important for our vision for the future. We would love to see this space become a hub of community involvement and training.

Unit 5 had been empty for quite some time and looked rather sorry for itself when we were first handed the keys - but not for long! With a bit of patience, fresh plaster, a lick of paint, hard graft, helpful friends and late nights in a freezing December 2009, we transformed it into a smart, warm and welcoming venue, where we enjoy working and others enjoy visiting.

We began working from the office in January 2010 and haven’t looked back since. The year has been full of continuing to build on the success of the business and creating links with new organisations such as Lincolnshire County Council, Birchwood Training & Access Centre, WEA and Creative Partnerships. Our training space has already been the home of many training sessions for schools and local charities such as North Kesteven School, Age UK, Lincolnshire Rural Support Network and Lincoln Volunteer Centre; it has been the venue for several courses run by people from Nettleham Methodist

As Nettleham residents we love living and working in this fantastic village. We hope that 2011 will be as exciting as 2010.

Sarah, a qualified primary school teacher, runs extra Numeracy and Literacy tutoring sessions from the premises. This allows children to have extra support in their learning, outside the environment of both the school and the home. ‘Storybook Days’ are Nettleham-based creative days run by Sarah Hollamby and Leanne Taylor. These days are held in every school holidays at the office and are for primary aged children. Each day is full of drama, storytelling, music, craft and games, all based on popular and favourite children’s books. So far we have waded through the beck on a ‘Bear Hunt;’ searched for golden tickets in the park with an Oompa Lumpa; met the BFG to rid the village of giants; made scarecrows and followed the yellow brick road. Nettleham Library News SELF-SERVICE IS COMING TO NETTLEHAM LIBRARY Nettleham Library will be closed between 8 and 21 March to enable exciting improvements to take place.

When we reopen on Tuesday 22 March, we will be a self-service library with two very easy to use self-service kiosks where you can issue, renew and return your books, as well as pay any fines and book charges. Our public computers will be replaced with new updated internet access computers, which will offer much better functionality. For example, users will, for the first time, be able to use memory sticks, download digital images and much more. Printing and photocopying (black and white and colour up to A3) will be via one multi-functional machine and the quality is much, much better than current printers/photocopier allow.

Of course, the technology can’t do everything, so the library staff will still be available to help you with your enquiries and to manage all the other aspects of the library. In fact, you should find that you get more quality time with us than at the moment, because we will be freed up from issuing and stamping books, giving us more time to dedicate to assisting you with your enquiries and book choices.

Technology is all very well and good you might say, but what about new library book stock? Well, the good news is that in addition to the technological improvements, the library will also benefit from a significant amount of new library stock and a new top-of-shelf signage scheme.

The new self-service machines do require you to always have your library card with you, so do please remember to bring it with you on every visit, otherwise you will not be able to borrow any stock! Have you lost your card? Just call in to get a replacement as soon as possible. In anticipation of these exciting improvements, we have been running a replacement card amnesty for some months.

This amnesty will end on 31 March after which it will cost you £2.00 for a new card, so do call in to get your replacement card before that date.

READING PASSPORTS AND ROOTED IN READING SCHEME Lincolnshire Libraries have been working with the Lincolnshire School Improvement Service as part of the Rooted in Reading scheme for a number of years now, through the Reading Passports scheme.

This scheme is designed to allow individuals to get the most out of their reading experience by recording what they have read, and their thoughts and comments on these books, in a passport-sized booklet.

Lincolnshire Libraries are focusing on the following 4 passports: ●

Sharing Stories & Rhymes Passport This is aimed at the parents of pre-school children as a way of encouraging reading together and recording the books and rhymes shared with their child and how they responded to them.

●

Reading Together Passport This is aimed at children aged 5 to 11 years and their parents and allows them to record the books they have read and their feelings or thoughts about them.

●

Readers Passport This is aimed at adults and young people aged 12 years and over and allows views about books read to be recorded. They can also be used by Reading Group members to gather ideas as they read so that they can be shared at meetings.

●

Thankfully, Nettleham parents and carers are very conscientious, but we do get the odd occasion where we are asked if it is okay to leave a child with us for a bit. We’d like to respectfully point out that, whilst staff do have a general duty of care to all who use the library, they cannot take specific responsibility for looking after or supervising your child, whatever their age.

HELP LIVES The LIVES fun quiz on page 61 in the winter 2010 edition of Nettleham News disappointingly failed to generate any interest amongst village residents.

Eddie Rouse First Responder, Level 2 (also Branch Treasurer)

If anyone knows some, or all, of the answers, I’d still encourage you to “have a go”. Do remember, the prize is still there waiting to be claimed and yours could be the only entry!

You may have heard that the BBC has joined forces with LIVES Headquarters to promote their “Life Savers” Campaign. The aim is to recruit another 400 LIVES First Responders across the county. At the time of writing, 111 people have completed applications and 21 have completed the necessary training and have “gone live”.

There are 600 Responders already helping to save an estimated 300 lives a year; with an additional 400 First Responders throughout the county, it’s estimated that a further 100 lives could be saved per annum.

Closer to home, we are still very keen to increase our own First Responder group so that we can continue to provide a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Although we would be happy to hear from anyone who would be willing to contribute to the group in any way at all, we are especially short of cover during the day. If you are retired, or semi-retired, work from home, do part-time or shift work, do please come and get involved.

Helping your local community is such a rewarding thing to do - please consider joining our group; even if it’s just one duty a month, it would be of great help. Being on call doesn’t interfere with your normal daily routine, it works alongside it.

We are a very friendly bunch of people and not only would joining our group help you do something amazing for your local community, you’d be making a new group of friends too.

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to a couple of long-standing members of the team.

Eddie, why did you become involved in LIVES? “Brian Wallis, our Co-ordinator stopped me one day whilst I was out walking the dog and asked if I would be interested in joining the group. This was in the very early days when we were still trying to raise sufficient funds to become fully operational, so I really didn’t know too much about what would be involved.”

What do you gain from being a Responder?

Eddie has been involved in the group since the very early days, in fact since the Branch became operational in February 2002.

His first call-out was in April 2002 to a casualty with chest pains.

He is now semi-retired, but when he initially joined the group, he was a pilot based at RAF Cranwell, where his later roles included tutoring other pilots on planes ranging from the Canberra, Buccaneer, Jet Provost, T37 and Bulldog, of which his favourite was the Buccaneer.

His semi-retirement involves working approximately two days a week undertaking random drug and alcohol testing on behalf of employers and other members of the community in family disputes. These are all within a two-hour drive from home; so one day he can be at the port in Immingham, or working with an employer in Grantham. This does mean that he is still on call, so his duties with LIVES tend to be either overnight or at the weekend.

Eddie is also our Branch Treasurer, looking after the finances; depositing funds received through donation or bequest, collecting the monies raised through the 11 collection tins located throughout the village, seeking funding where appropriate (his philosophy on this is: “If you don’t ask you don’t get”) and paying the bills.

“I feel I’m doing something for the community, when people are at their weakest and you get a great sense of satisfaction knowing you’ve been of use.

I see my role as helping the patient and their family until the ambulance and paramedics arrive. I also enjoy the social aspects of being involved in the branch and I’m proud to be a member of Nettleham LIVES”.

What would you say to a fellow villager who is debating about whether to come forward and see what we do?

“Most people are scared about what they might be faced with on a call out. I’ve been known to faint at the sight of my own blood, but when faced with a casualty your training takes over and you are able to deal with the situation facing you.

On average, I do about one duty a week, which isn’t onerous in any way. So in about 50 duties a year, I’ve only been called upon on to put my skills into action, on about 7 or 8 occasions.”

Eddie, as a key member of the local group, do you have time for any other hobbies or interests?

“With my drugs and alcohol testing role taking about 2 days per week, another 2 days are spent playing golf - I’m a member of the Carholme Golf Club. I also work as the Mayor of Lincoln’s Deputy Officer, which means I cover for the Mayor’s Officer in his absence and I also take part in many local celebrations - for example, the Remembrance Services.

I obviously spend some time with my wife Stephanie too!”

SAVE LIVES David Herbert Intermediate Responder, Level 3

latest edition to his home address. “I had been reading about the LIVES scheme and decided to attend the Bystander Training session that was being run by the branch about a week after we arrived”.

Now semi-retired, David continues his work in reflexology on a part-time basis.

His medical skills have also come in useful, as he works at a doctors’ surgery a few days a week, putting new patient details onto the computer system. David’s duties for LIVES tend to be during the week, either days or nights, leaving the weekends free for him to catch up with family, friends and other interests.

David, why did you become involved in LIVES?

David has been involved in the group since November 2006. Born and educated in Oxford, David spent his early career as a printer. Later on he took on the fascinating role of National Co-ordinator for Town Twinning, which involved extensive travel throughout the UK and Europe.

A redundancy situation made him re-think his career direction and he retrained as a reflexologist about 14 years ago. He had his own very successful clinic in St Albans, where he undertook reflexology and Indian head massage.

The move to Nettleham came about because his daughter, Rachel, was studying at the University of Lincoln. “We had planned a viewing of a property in Dunholme and were slightly early for the appointment. As we drove past we decided to call into Nettleham and immediately fell in love with the place. I called in at the Plough and when I explained to the landlord, Bob, that we were planning to move to the area, he disappeared for a few minutes, returning with the details of several properties within the village which he’d found on the internet”.

Before his move (not actually a property from this initial search) he and his wife Judy had been reading past copies of Nettleham News on the internet and the Editor had also very kindly posted the

“Judy and I had made a conscious decision before we moved, to get involved in the local community. The Bystander Training event was very well attended, with about a dozen or so people there. Brian Wallis and Kay Horner were the trainers on the night and I remember in particular, that it was Kay’s enthusiasm that really attracted me.

It was on the same night that two others also decided to join.”

What do you gain from being a First Responder?

“I really feel I’m putting something back into the community and helping others.

I probably average about half a dozen or so call-outs each year, where I put my skills and training into action and the CPR techniques have certainly been put to good use. Like all of our Responders, I do about one duty a week.”

What would you say to a fellow villager who is debating about whether to come forward and see what we do?

“You never know when you’re going to need us. Even if you can only give one or two days a month to help others, it’s very worthwhile.”

David, as a key member of the local Group, do you have time for any other hobbies or interests?

“We love visiting National Trust and English Heritage properties, dog walking 67

keeps me fit and I’m involved in the Baptist Church in Lincoln. I must admit that the ‘Carols on the Green’ on Christmas Eve are a real highlight of the season.

I also enjoy doing puzzles and I’m something of a fiend with Sudoku. I like travelogues and also television quizzes (although I’m useless if the subject is soap operas!) and Judy and I particularly enjoy holidaying in Madeira.”

The Poetry Page MARCH WATCH Your month of March roars in with windswept eyes On flocks of glossy starlings as they glide Round trembling willows with intent to peck For little grubs beside the bustling beck.

Brave busy people hasten here and there Through sharp sleet almost more than they can bear; Trim homes of brick or stone have well built eaves That shelter them till duties mean each leaves To face first-hand rough rattling winds that lash At hawthorn hedges and make weak trees crash.

A sallow sun gives one of his sly smiles Which makes a kind of promise that beguiles By hinting that grey winter has now passed And soaking fields can soon be worked at last.

Young lambs on frail legs roam from mother’s side Then loudly bleat for somewhere warm to hide; Slim nimble wagtails dart at last year’s flies While one brown mouse the barn owl’s pounce defies; Bright butterflies rise up from their deep sleep So causing smiles and children’s hearts to leap.

Male songbirds start their melodies to run Like lyrics calling their new mates to come; Small mammals stirred by warmth will slowly wake To forage in their stores and insects take.

THE POLECAT Coated in black with a slight purple sheen, The polecat’s a killer who’s seldom seen.

First Round: Best Kept Village notices displayed. Full notice board of activities, fundraising, clubs. All public areas free of litter and graffiti, nature area looked after.

Second Round: Good community information displayed. Impressive floral displays by sponsors. Well maintained village seats. Lots of activities.

Final Round: A warm feeling that the community have worked so well together with great pride.

We were impressed by effort to get sponsors for the floral displays and for the very good maintenance of the village seats. The village obviously takes great pride in maintaining all aspects of its appearance and it shows.

It was frequently warm and humid and from the 6th mostly changeable and unsettled, but up to the 5th it was mostly settled, sunny and warm.

Thereafter rain was frequent, with some sunny spells.

It was mild and changeable wih relatively low pressure until the 6th and unsettled, windy and wet at times, especially on the 1st, which collected the month’s highest rain total.

It was an extremely eventful month, after a relatively mild start, with 17°C reached on the 4th. The last week was gripped by a remarkable cold spell with the temperature not getting above 0°C on the 28th.

Thunder and heavy rain occurred on the 23rd.

The windiest weather was on the 14th and 15th.

It was slightly cooler at times between the 24th and 27th, but from the 27th it was often misty, drizzly and humid.

It was sunnier on the 30th and continued warm.

The rest of the month had spells of high and low pressure alternating.

The most settled spell occurred between the 7th and 14th, but the sunniest days were the 17th, 20th and 25th. Mist occurred on occasions, mostly between the 7th and 14th and it was often hazy.

There was frost on the 20th and 25th with a number of cold starts between the 7th and 25th, but the earlier and later parts of the month were relatively mild.
