I frequently receive very complimentary comments about our village magazine, which is gratifying, but remember, it is you, the readers, who make it what it is through the wide variety of material which you send in for publication throughout the year.

If you have never sent in anything yet, then make 2011 the year when your name appears in print. It really can be anything at all - articles, stories, poems, letters, jokes, photographs - the list just goes on.

Nettleham Library There is very welcome news about our village library which is going to be upgraded in 2011, with lots of new equipment, books and other services.

This comes at a time when I know many residents feared the closure of this vital facility in Nettleham and I strongly urge readers to use the new services to ensure that the library continues to provide a much-needed service for the village (see page 71 for full details).

Carols on The Green There is something magical about this coming together of families at Christmas time to sing traditional favourite carols on the village green and if you haven’t been before, do come along this year and see for yourself. The Christmas tree with its twinkling lights, the candles carried by the singers and who knows, maybe even a snowflake or two to complete the festive village scene.

The service starts at 7.00pm on Christmas Eve 24 December and is followed by light refreshments in All Saints church.

There is an interesting article on page 27 of this edition about how this village tradition originally started in 1977.

Best Kept Village Competition For an incredible third year running, Nettleham has been awarded first place in the annual Best Kept Village Competition organised by the Community Council of Lincolnshire on behalf of the Lincolnshire Campaign for the Protection of Rural England.

This is a truly astonishing achievement and we can all be justifiably proud of our efforts in keeping the village clean and tidy and always looking at its best.

To mark this unique achievement, Lincolnshire County Council will install two signs on the parish boundary. The village will also receive a certificate, a plaque and a commemorative tree.

The full results will be published in the spring 2011 edition of Nettleham News.

Deepdale Lane There is some good news for residents of Deepdale Lane about the 30mph speed restriction zone, which is to be extended (see page 47).

Nettleham Gardeners’ Annual Show This was a huge success this year, with a record number of exhibitors. If you have never entered anything in this show, make it your resolution to do so in 2011. There are lots of different classes and even if gardening isn’t your thing, then there are also art, craft, photography, baking and wine classes. There are also a number of special classes designed to appeal to the natural creativity of children. So do have a go next year and you could be pictured in Nettleham News as a winner of one (or more) of the trophies! (see pages 66/67).

Wow! We get lots of photographs sent in to Nettleham News for publication, but I urge you to take a look at the one on page 35 it’s a real Christmas cracker!

Best Kept Village Nettleham has won the Best Kept Village Competition for the class Large Villages and Small Towns for the third year running. The Parish Council wishes to congratulate and thank all residents and businesses for all their efforts in helping to achieve this prestigious award.

Three of the tennis courts at Mulsanne Park have recently been resurfaced. The work was funded mainly from a large grant, which the Tennis Club obtained from the Longdales Trust.

The remainder of the costs were met by a grant from the Parish Council and by the Tennis Club.

The Property Committee considered the question of usage of all five courts, and recommended to the full Council that the three refurbished courts should be for the exclusive use of the Tennis Club and that the two multi-use courts be made available, free of charge, to any users on a first-come first-served basis.

This recommendation will be considered by the Council on 15 December and if approved will come into force from 1 January 2011. This means that anyone playing on the two multi-use courts will not have to pay the current £5 fee.

These courts will be cleaned prior to the start of the 2011 season in April.

Precept 2011 The Parish Council considered, at its meeting on 28 October, the precept requirement for 2011.

After appraising expenditure in the current year, and taking a prudent approach, as dictated by the economic situation, it was decided to set the precept at £111,886. This represents an increase of less than £9 per annum per household (1,570 households). This increase is due to the anticipated loan repayments for the re-roofing of the Village Hall (see below), the removal by West Lindsey District Council of the ‘per capita’ subsidy (£3,000) and the necessary inflationary increases on utilities, etc.

The 2011/12 precept makes no allowance for any expenditure not yet identified, such as the Government’s ‘Big Society’ programme.

Village Hall As many residents will know, the Village Hall Committee has made tremendous efforts to put in hand improvements to the building fabric of the hall.

One project which they have identified as essential, but for which they been unable to obtain adequate funding, is the replacement of the roof. The Village Hall Committee has approached the Parish Council with a request for assistance towards the construction of a new roof. This matter was considered by the Council on 28 October 2010 and it was agreed in principle to take out a loan of up to £50,000 for the new roof. However, the Village Hall Committee has been requested to produce a Business Plan for the hall.

A Community Liaison Group regarding Linelands has been set up and two members of the Parish Council have attended the meetings held.

A Liaison Group has been set up for each of the eight Care Homes affected, to discuss the way forward and to allow local people to air their views. Six options are on the table, but Lincolnshire County Council is recommending selling off the homes they currently run to the private sector.

Simple SID (Speed Indication Display) The Parish Council and seven other neighbouring Parish Councils have contributed towards the purchase of a Simple SID device via Lincolnshire Police. The Simple SID device features a “Smiley Face” for drivers for complying with the speed limit and a “Sad Face” for those which do not.

A portable device, it will be moved around the various parishes in different locations.

Memorial Benches The Council is very grateful for the offers of memorial benches received over the summer.

Three benches have been ordered and should be in place by the time this magazine is published.

Many thanks to everyone who has donated a bench. We still have room for one or two more, at Riverdale and in the burial ground.

Planning The new Head of Planning at West Lindsey District Council, Mark Sturgess, will be attending an Extraordinary Parish Council meeting on Tuesday 7 December 2010 in the Small Hall at The Old School. He will give a presentation on the Planning Processes currently in operation and answer any queries raised.

A vacancy has occurred for a member of the public to sit on the Parish Council’s Mulsanne Park Liaison Committee, comprising representatives of users of the facility and two public members. Anyone interested in filling this vacancy should send details to the Clerk of the Council at the address alongside.

Lincolnshire County Council has notified the Parish Council that the mobile library stop on Scothern Road is relocated to Kingsway, after suggestions made by the Parish Council.

Bill Bailey’s Play Area The new play area fencing at Bill Bailey’s was made possible by a generous grant to the Council by the Star Energy Community Fund.

In the coming months the Council is likely to undertake some repairs to the play area surface, and also at Larch Avenue, as the tiles and timber surrounds have deteriorated over the years.

Horse Chestnuts Under Threat Many residents of the village will have noticed with alarm the forlorn appearance of the Horse Chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum) in and around the village, particularly the magnificent specimen growing in the graveyard adjacent to Beckside on High Street.

In the autumns of previous years, the leaf-form of these deciduous trees would remain basically the same until leaf fall, staying relatively flat and gradually turning beautiful autumnal shades of brown, orange and yellow, to grace our village in the latter months of the year.

However, this year it has been a rather different story and something sinister really is afoot - something which could ultimately decimate the Horse Chestnut population of the UK - much the same as happened some years ago with Dutch Elm Disease.

The culprit is also the same - a tiny insect, but this time, instead of a beetle, it is a small moth whose larvae are so-called leaf miners, living within the fabric of the leaf and eating the internal tissue, causing the foliage to curl and become dessicated and distorted.

The Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner (Cameraria ohridella) was first observed in Macedonia in northern Greece in the 1970’s, since when it has progressively spread across Europe and is now in the UK. Potential predators - other insects, birds, etc, are prevented from getting at the larvae as they lie protected between the relatively tough upper and lower skins of the individual leaves. Thus their inexorable spread across the globe is unlikely to be halted any time soon.

The problem can spread in a number of different ways: through adult insect flight (assisted by the wind) and also through passive transport of adult moths, or infected leaves in or on cars and other vehicles.

If the trees continue to be attacked year after year, they will very soon weaken and may eventually die as they have insufficient healthy foliage to sustain the tree. Larger mature specimens may last longer because of their nutrient reserves, but even these will eventually succumb.

Quite apart from children no longer being able to collect the “conkers” in the autumn for the traditional playground game, what a crying shame if we lose any of these magnificent trees from our village.

In October 2010, the leaves of Horse Chestnuts were badly disfigured and curled, giving the trees a rather forlorn appearance.

The foliage also dropped much earlier than in previous years, a sure sign that the trees are already under considerable stress

Letters from Readers From Councillor Malcolm Leaning When I first was elected to West Lindsey District Council in 1981, there was no email and I made regular visits to the post office to correspond with constituents.

Now I am able to give much swifter service by email, if I know the enquirer’s email address.

I would be grateful if you could you please publish my two email addresses below in the next edition: Malcolm.leaning@ntlworld.com Cllr.m.leaning@west-lindsey.gov.uk Regarding the planning application by Lincoln Rugby Club, my statement to the Planning Committee before I left the chamber might help to explain my own ‘point of view’.

On 28 December 2009, anticipating that I would be absent on holiday when Planning application 125006 would be considered, I wrote to the Planning Officer with my comments as local member for the Planning Committee as follows:

Before giving my opinion on the Planning Application, I had hoped to have both the Planning Officer’s full report and that of our Consultees to consider, particularly those of the Environment Agency and the LCC Highways Department, with their views on the perceived problems which may arise. Unfortunately, consideration of this application has been further deferred and I must write without their advice.

After careful consideration of all the information I have before me at this time, and on balance, I support the application to provide these facilities for Rugby in the village where I was born and have lived for all my 71 years.

The adjacent ‘Mulsanne Park’ in Nettleham caters for football, tennis and cricket, but has no spare capacity for other pursuits and this proposal will compliment those available and give a greater choice of leisure facilities to our residents.

Nettleham is not the dormitory suburb of Lincoln, as some would view it, but a living, thriving village endeavouring to cater for all ages in its population - please support this application.

At Nettleham we have been considering this proposed development for several months and discussing the merits and consequences of allowing the application both at Public Meetings and at Parish Council meetings.

In addition I have received and had copied to me many letters and emails, both opposing and supporting the application.

I am naturally aware that Nettleham Parish Council finally voted by 4 votes to 3 votes to oppose the application with, of course, Councillor Frith and myself abstaining.

Seven months later, we now have the full report and, as you will have noted, the Environment Agency has raised no objections to the application (on the basis that the mains foul drainage network can accommodate the development), but request a condition relating to surface water drainage.

LCC Highways, whilst advising refusal, has done so on the basis of a potential increase in traffic through the centre of Nettleham village - not because of the junction of Lodge Lane and the A158.

As the Planning Officer reports: As far as the increase in car traffic is concerned, the objection is not based on any inadequacy of the Lodge Lane/A158 junction - the Lincolnshire Highways Authority says this can cope with the extra amount.

It is the potential for a build-up to occur there at peak times whilst cars are waiting to turn right in the direction of Lincoln which may lead drivers, who know the area, to take an alternative route by turning left out of the facility and proceed through the centre of Nettleham village.

This concern is one of the main ones expressed by residents. It needs to be viewed in context, however. The greatest period of use will be at weekends.

The build-up of traffic from parents at Nettleham Junior School only occurs at the start and end of the school day and not at the weekends on the potential alternative route through the village to the A46 and the parked cars of people attending the Church and Chapel on a Sunday morning will only slow down anyone using this road. As the proposed Rugby Club’s ’greatest period of use will be at the weekends’ I do not think that this factor is sufficient reason to refuse the application.

Again on balance, having now read the full report, I can still support this application.

I have been advised that my earlier submission could have been taken as my ‘pre-determining’ the planning application, so I shall leave you to debate and vote on the application before returning for the remainder of the agenda.

In addition, any member of the general public now contemplating putting in a planning application for, for instance, an alteration or addition to their property, within the West Lindsey authority district, can receive free advice from planning officers prior to them putting in, and paying for, the application, or even before they pay to have the plans drawn up!

This useful facility may save considerable time and possible delays at a later stage in the planning process.

Letters from Readers New Park ‘n’ Ride Scheme in the Village?

I notice there has recently been a number of articles in the magazine about the Lincolnshire Police Headquarters and the large number of cars which are to be seen parked up there.

A little dicky-bird told me it’s a new “Park and Ride” scheme, so, as a resident of Nettleham, is it possible for me to use this facility, or is it just for the convenience of the police?!

I was most disturbed to read in the autumn edition of the magazine the warning to parents regarding syringes and needles being found in the Beck near Washdyke Lane.

I then went on to read the letter from a reader entitled “Intimidation” and I was simply appalled! My blood boiled on reading this letter and my heart went out to the person who wrote it and, of course, their dear mother, who was being cruelly victimised in such a way.

Being elderly myself and on my own, I can fully appreciate this vulnerable lady feeling so intimidated and frightened.

Then there was the outrageous theft of lead sheeting from the roof of All Saints church (see page 39).

All of which is deeply disturbing to residents who, up to this time, considered themselves to be living in a relatively crime-free environment.

Readers may have seen the large ivy “tree” which stands just under the archway leading to the rear of my house and clearly visible from the street.

During the months of September, October and into November, this is always covered in flowers, which are very rich in nectar and pollen and a magnet for insects of all kinds, particularly on sunny days.

In past years, this profusion of insects has always included a large number of butterflies (particularly Red Admirals) which come to feed on this rich source of nutrients.

I remember one year I counted 25 of these insects flying around the plant on a single sunny day, but this year I have only seen one solitary Red Admiral throughout the entire autumn.

Where have they all gone? Why are there so few of these beautiful insects to be seen nowadays?

We read that the food plant of their larvae or caterpillars (the common stinging nettle) is becoming progressively less common, due both to the use of weed killers and the cultivation of previously wild corners and fallow land where this ubiquitous weed grows.

I have also noticed a general decline in the numbers of other common butterflies visiting the garden over the years: Peacock, Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Comma, Whites, etc, all seem to be falling in numbers year by year.

I would have thought that the police would get involved, but obviously I thought wrongly!

First there was the spate of burglaries in the village earlier in the year.

Where are all the Butterflies?

Yet I see plenty of evidence of stinging nettles around the village. Vicars Wood, for instance, has large areas of this plant, but no Red Admiral larvae to be seen anywhere at all.

I can only hope the culprit(s) are caught and punished. To target anyone in this way is despicable, but to target the frail and elderly really is unforgiveable.

Yes, Margaret, sadly Nettleham has been the subject of a crime wave in 2010!

It is good to know that both these, and other rarer butterflies, continue to be present in the countryside. Turn to page 17 and there are some photographs of a number of less common butterflies seen at the Ashing Lane Nature reserve at Dunholme.

Perhaps unpredictable weather patterns in recent years have also contributed to the decline in the butterfly population, but let us hope that these beautiful creatures eventually stage a comeback to grace our summer gardens once more.

1st Nettleham 4th Lincoln Scout Group Think you know scouting?

If you still think scouting is just about boys, tents and woggles, you could not be more wrong. Take a look at a video recently released by the Scout Association - you might just change your mind. It can be found at: http://www.scouts.org.uk/noticeboard/252/think-you-know-scoutingthink-again Scouting in Nettleham is still very much alive, with the Beaver Colony, Cub Pack and Scout Troop all either full, or nearly full, offering approximately 70 boys and girls, aged between 6 and 14 years, the opportunity for weekly adventure.

In addition to the activities held in the village, all units regularly travel further afield in search of adventure. In fact, in the first half of the autumn term, all units have already done so.

part of the Young Persons Design Challenge organised by the Nettleham Woodland Trust. They also went parascending at RAF North Luffenham in Rutland, and on a walking weekend in Derbyshire, stopping over at a youth hostel and visiting the illuminations and fireworks at Matlock Bath in the evening.

All these great activities are only possible due to the dedication of the team of volunteer leaders associated with the Nettleham Group.

The Beaver Colony attended the annual Lincoln District Scout camp at the Newark Showground, allowing the Nettleham Beavers to join in exciting activities along with Beavers from other colonies in the Lincoln area. They also visited the Lincoln District Scout campsite at Sudbrooke to learn about trees, a place they will visit regularly for camps when they move up to cubs and scouts.

The Cub Pack visited Monks Wood on the Ashing Lane Nature Reserve and, for a seasonal Halloween treat, went on the Lincoln Ghost Walk.

The Scout Troop also visited Monks Wood to have a look at the newly-installed thresholds that they helped design as a

Friends of Nettleham Guides and Scouts (FROGS) Bottle Bank helps Village Youth Groups For those readers who have not heard of us, we are the committee that owns and manages the building and facilities on Vicarage Lane that many of you will know as either the Scout Headquarters, or Guide Headquarters, depending on your association with either of these groups.

For many years we were known as the Headquarters Committee and more recently as Friends of Nettleham Guides and Scouts (FROGS).

We are responsible for the maintenance of the buildings and equipment, ensuring that utilities are available, implementing any improvements to the facilities and ensuring the appropriate insurance covers are in place. In addition to the ever increasing running costs, we have recently

invested in new kitchen facilities and completely recovered the roof. This has been done at considerable expense, paid for out of funds that have been raised by the committee over many years.

Whilst we receive fees from all groups that use our facilities, we rely heavily on fundraising events such as the Christmas raffle, summer fete and concerts. We also receive income from the bottle bank in the Co-op car park, although the contribution from this has decreased considerably since the blue recycling bins were introduced in the village a few years ago.

We would encourage you to use the Co-op recycling facilities that are available and, in doing so, you will be doing far more than simply recycling some glass, you will be helping support the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer 13

groups that rely on us - this is more than 150 youth members.

We would like to thank everyone that has supported us in the past - it has enabled us to continue to provide excellent facilities.

We also look forward to your continued support in the future.

1st Nettleham Guides Review of the Girlguiding UK Centenary We started the centenary celebrations on the 5 September 2009 with a Launch Party at the Epic Centre on the Lincolnshire Showground.

Balloons, party games, stilt walkers and, of course a cake, were all part of the fun.

The date being a hundred years to the day since a group of girls turned up at the Crystal Palace Scouting Rally and said: ’Oy Baden Powell, what about us?!’

Well, what about us? How did 1st Nettleham guides celebrate their centenary? We had a party in the hut a meeting on the theme of a hundred.

Spinning 100 times and trying to walk in a straight line. Collecting 100 signatures.

Skipping 100 times. Walking 100 steps from the hut and seeing where we ended up. We’ve eaten biscuits from the 100 years celebratory tin and donned our Centenary bright pink tee shirts (they’ll never get us back into blue!). We’ve raced centenary coloured ducks down the Beck and attended the centenary Big Gig at Wembley arena followed by a sleep-over at the hut.

In March, to celebrate the Centenary, we went to Pax Lodge in London - a Girlguiding UK Association house, on a Guide Get Away weekend. Travelling by tube, train and bus we went on the London Eye, visited the Girlguiding 100 year maze at Crystal Palace and saw the West End Show “Wicked”, which totally lived up to its name and was absolutely “wicked”. We also watched the Changing of the Guard from inside the forecourt of Buckingham Palace and were honoured to be spoken to by the incoming captain of the Scots Guard and his colour bearer. We were even allowed to stroke his busby!

The whole weekend was so fantastic.

May saw us at Sudbrooke Park for an overnight camp using our newly-purchased lightweight Centenary tents. The weather was perfect for an overnight camp. Dave Dennison from Nettleham cubs built us a fantastic campfire and in the morning we lit fires of our own for some non-utensil cooking. Omelette in a plastic bag proved most popular, with boiling an egg in a paper cup being the most unusual.

‘Party in the Park’ was in June at Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne. The day started with our discovery that the hut had been broken into and our cupboard doors vandalised! Once again we were blessed with fantastic weather. It was a day of activities split into different zones: entertainment (including morris dancing), Tai Chi, hand-bell ringing, crafts, circus skills (including juggling), stilt walking, Diablo, abseiling, archery and finally a bouncy castle zone.

Along with the dash to the toilets in skimpy summer nightware and no torch, we had the opportunity for archery, rafting, fencing and various climbing and high rope activitities. Our groupie Chris, dressed as a cow for the disco, was a big, but hopefully not to be repeated, success!

In between all these Centenary celebrations, ordinary guide nights have continued.

Cassie ran a whole term’s worth of activities to earn her Baden Powell Badge the highest award achievable in guides.

We’ve visited an optician, had speakers from the Weirfield animal hospital and the neighbourhood police officer and had a Pumpkin sculpture and disco evening.

Lauren, working towards the same badge, ran a co-operative games night and a healthy lifestyles evening. Steve Harris, from Lincolnshire County Council’s Emergency Planning Unit, helped us gain our Active Response Badge.

For our final weeks of the Centenary celebrations, we did a quiz run by the young leaders, and visited Sudbrooke Park for games in the dark. Great fun and thanks once again to Dave for his camp fire skills. For two weeks we took part in the Anglia Region Decades Wide Game exploring the ten decades of Girlguiding.

Activities included egg decorating, racing space hoppers and origami hovercrafts.

The Centenary Finale, an event known as ‘Vision’ was held at the William Farr School. Acts included Natalie with her baton twirling group Baton Rouge, with cheerleading Scothern Brownies. The audience were agog at the sound and spectacle of the Kakushegei Taiko Drummers. Becky the Street Dancer had us all dancing in our rows and the evening culminated with Lauren singing songs from the Shows. At 20.10 20/10 2010, via a direct internet link with Liz Burnley, our Chief Guide, all members of Girlguiding UK renewed their Promise and the Centenary was brought to a conclusion.

Nettleham Woodland Trust 2010 has been another busy year for members and associates of Nettleham Woodland Trust.

Monks Wood at Ashing Lane Nature Reserve, Dunholme, has remained the focus of much activity with the care and maintenance of the many trees which have been planted there.

Most are growing well and have now become well-established, with vigorous new foliage in evidence. Spraying earlier in the year reduced weed growth.

The main threshold gateway is now complete, with only the display boards, which will feature maps and other useful information about the reserve, to be added early next year.

There is already a wide variety of wildlife being recorded from the site and on this page are a number of photographs of butterflies seen this year by local amateur wildlife photographer Mark Johnson.

There are reports of an increasing number of people visiting the site and taking the opportunity to get out into the fresh air and enjoy a pleasant walk in this new local woodland amenity.

Diamond Wedding Anniversary for Bob and Nellie Here’s a couple many of our readers will recognise: Bob and Nellie Ord, who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years) on Saturday 18 September at the Black Horse public house in Nettleham.

Bob and Nellie first met at a dance in Doncaster on 19 August 1949 and were married a year later on 2 September 1950 at St Peter’s Church, Bentley, Doncaster.

Until then, Nellie had worked in a chemist shop in Balby, Doncaster, and Bob was employed by Avery & Pooley of Birmingham, manufacturers of a wide variety of weighing machines.

When they moved to Lincoln, they found rooms on Doddington Road where they stayed for six months whilst looking for a house. They eventually bought a cottage in Scothern which they modernised over the years together. During this time they had two daughters: Marilyn, who lives at Dunholme and Christine who lives in Wiltshire.

Bob was then working for Ruston Bucyrus, as an inspector, until the firm closed and Bob and Nellie decided to buy an off-licence which they ran together until Bob became employed with BT. They left the off-licence to take a general store on Riseholme Road, eventually returning to Scothern and then Nettleham, where they have lived for 28 years.

Many readers will remember Nellie from the days when she worked for David Hurr, and then Sue Shingdia, at the chemist shop in Church Street in the village. After 30 years of this work, she retired at the age of 80 years!

To mark this significant milestone in their married life together, Bob and Nellie spent a weekend at their daughter’s home in Wiltshire and had a celebratory meal at a country club with their children and grandchildren, followed by a barbecue with all their relatives.

I’m sure all our readers will join me in congratulating Bob and Nellie on this, their Diamond Wedding Anniversary year and wish them many more anniversaries to come in the future.

Police News Firstly I would like to mention one or two things in relation to the spate of burglaries suffered around the village between May and September. The first is that Pcso Parker and myself would like to thank you all for helping us by reporting suspicious incidents, persons or vehicles, being good neighbours and also taking more interest in your own security at home.

Secondly, I can confirm, on behalf of Lincoln CID, that the burglaries have stopped and a male has been detained in relation to the burglaries around the village. I cannot give any other information at the time of writing, however I would urge residents to keep watching the local news over the coming month.

Ordinarily Nettleham is a very low crime area, and in fact remains a low crime area despite the burglaries, but I think it has hit home to a lot of people that no matter where you live, or how safe you may feel, you must think about your security.

We are no longer requesting residents to telephone or write in with their holiday dates, but if you feel the need to let us know, we will still record it at the station.

If you still want security advice, please contact Pcso Parker or myself and we will do our best to assist.

Facebook Although I appreciate it is not everyone’s cup of tea, the Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team is now on Facebook. Similar information and advice to that which we post on the Lincs Police Website will be found, along with the odd photograph, events and engagements that are coming up, and also gives links to other organisations, including the numerous parish councils with which we are linked.

Whether it takes off, only time will tell, but it is another method of reaching residents in our area. If anyone is already on Facebook, please feel free to become one of our friends and spread the word on our behalf. For me personally it is a very quick method of sending out information and updates and can be done when out and about via a mobile. Facebook is not replacing the updates we already put out.

Of course the team will continue updating the website, sending out emails and placing our newsletters at various locations around our policing area.

Police Surgeries Can I remind all residents that we are still running a Police Surgery once a month at the village library. They are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Either Pcso Parker or myself will be there to answer any questions, give advice, or you can report minor incidents or occurrences to us if an immediate response

is not required. Since starting in Nettleham at the beginning of this year I believe we have only had one, maybe two, people who have visited us! If this continues we will have to make a decision whether keeping the Police Surgery in Nettleham is viable. We do run other Police Surgeries around the area and the majority are well attended.

Parking in the Village Inconsiderate and bad parking has been raised again to the Police, particularly at school start and end times at both the Infant School on All Saints Lane and adjoining roads and outside the Junior School, (in particular up Mill Hill around the bend onto Sudbrooke Lane). We are also having problems around The Green, in particular around the grass island in front of the Co-op.

Due to the markings on the road, if you park around the grass island anywhere you are causing an unnecessary obstruction at a junction. The roads are not the widest around this part of the village and finding 10 or 15 cars parked here does cause unnecessary obstructions to other road users. I appreciate it is not always local residents that park here, but please be mindful when you do park, there is a large car park to the rear of the Co-op that is very under-used. Below are some things to consider before parking.

DO NOT Park with two wheels on the pavement. This obstructs the pavement and can result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Fine of £30. We will, and have been issuing Fixed Penalty Notices. If there is not room to park without having two wheels on the pavement it means that the road is not wide enough and you should go elsewhere to park. Although common sense would prevail if two wheels were marginally on the pavement and if adequate room was left for a wheelchair user, or push chair, to get passed safely, we would not prosecute.

We use 1 metre as a guide, and this means from wing mirror to pavement edge.

DO NOT park near to junctions. This obstructs the vision for vehicles entering and leaving the junction. The Highway Code states that you should park at least 10 metres from a junction. Again a Fixed Penalty Notice for £30 can be issued for this offence.

DO NOT park on bends. When you park on a bend, other road users having to overtake your parked vehicle may come bumper-to-bumper with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Other than causing again an unnecessary obstruction, it could be considered that you have left your vehicle in a dangerous position, and consider this: if the vehicle overtaking your parked vehicle on a bend collides with an oncoming vehicle and your parked vehicle is deemed a contributing factor, you will be dealt with as part of the collision enquiry.

If you take a moment to consider when parking your vehicle: Am I causing other road users or pedestrians an unnecessary obstruction? If the answer is YES, then park elsewhere.

Beckside Women’s Institute This is an afternoon meeting which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2011.

Originally started to accommodate older residents who prefer afternoon events rather than evenings, meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 2.00pm in the Old School.

Scothern Players amateur dramatic group have been established since 1994 and have built up an enviable reputation for quality productions that almost always sell out.

The group, based at Scothern Community Centre, recently won an award at the Skegness Playgoers Festival in the one-act play category, which also successfully toured around other Lincolnshire villages.

The Players are currently planning for their next production in February 2011 and are looking for new members, not just as actors, but also to help out with stage management, set design, production and front of house.

John Anthony, the group’s Chairman and one of the founder members said: “Two of our most stalwart members have recently retired and, as we would like to put on bigger productions, we are looking for new members, particularly males, who fancy treading the boards. Newcomers of any age are always welcome, and you don’t have to have acted before - if this is something that you have always wanted to do, but never had the opportunity before, then we would like to hear from you. We are a very friendly group and everyone gets involved in each production to ensure its success - and when the first performance of a new production ends and the audience applauds, it is one of the greatest feelings that you can experience.”

Nettleham Football Club This year saw the culmination of a long-term ambition of the club to be awarded Chartered Status by the Football Association through the Lincolnshire Football Association.

The award is the result of three years’ hard work involving the whole club and we would like to thank everyone involved for making this possible, particularly Carol Worthington, who has been the driving force in co-ordinating the relevant paperwork (of which there was a lot!) and also making our presentation.

What does Chartered Status mean?

It means that the Football Association recognises that Nettleham FC is a well-constituted club, supporting the FA’s criteria in respect of opportunities for all to play football, discipline, structure and is non-racial. We are very proud to have gained this recognition.

In addition to the 13 teams playing under the Nettleham banner, on Saturday mornings we run mini-soccer sessions for five- to ten-year olds. Both girls and boys are welcome under the supervision of Guy Hardcastle, Adrian Taylor and a number of supporting parents.

So if your youngsters would like a taste of football, Saturday mornings at Mulsanne Park is the place to be!

Football matches take place on both Saturdays and Sundays and occasionally mid-week. The first team play in the Central Midlands League, level seven in the football pyramid and includes teams from Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

The second team play in the local Lincoln League. Both play on Saturdays.

Sunday sees the Ladies Team, which again plays at regional level and includes teams from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire, and the Sunday Team playing in the local league.

In addition, the under-18’s play at county level, as do all the Junior teams - all on Sunday.

Carols on the Green The children and I came out of the Co-op and noticed that a Christmas tree had been erected on The Green by The Black Horse. There had never been one there before!

We experienced a thrill of anticipation.

“How lovely!” I thought and later watched as Alf Frith battled with the breeze to string up all the fairy lights.

“I could see us singing carols around that tree!” I thought to myself. It was December 1977.

all denominations - Baptists, Brethren, Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists - who would take a Scripture reading, lead a prayer, or introduce a carol, drawing attention to a particular verse, with a personal comment. There was a great sense of unity and joy in our celebration.

In 2002, The decision was made by Rev Mark Lawrence, Rev Gordon Sleight and Dr Pete Atkins to experiment by moving Carols on the Green to Christmas Eve. Would people be too busy to turn out? Quite the reverse! For many families it has become an established start to their Christmas celebrations and something not to be missed! Three generations of families frequently gather, and there is the opportunity for friendships to be renewed with past friends returning for Christmas.

At that time Vanessa and Greg attended a flourishing Crusader Class, run on a Sunday afternoon by an enthusiastic group, started by Dr Ian Lechler, by then led by Drs Peter Lacy and Philip Elwood, and held at the old Medical Centre, next to the Library.

So it came to pass, that the following year, a rather self-conscious group of children, plus leaders and parents, gathered around the tree on the Sunday afternoon before Christmas to sing carols, ably accompanied by Ralph Daubney with his accordion.

We faced outwards, to engage any passers-by. People smiled at us warmly, and offered us money - which we had not anticipated! We then moved on to regale the residents at Linelands, who came to the windows and doors, and gladly sang along with us! Thus encouraged, we decided to do it the following year, and numbers increased.

One disappointment was that so few people were out and about at 3.00pm on a cold December afternoon, and who would blame them! Much better to be tucked up warmly by the TV! We serenaded the folk walking their dogs as they passed, but our ambition was growing and it was decided that we would raise the profile, hold it at 7.00pm on the Tuesday before Christmas, attempted to engage the Salvation Army Band, who happily agreed, and advertised around the village. We were amazed by the growing numbers who turned out. At that time there was no mini-sermon. Instead, we involved Christians from the village of

Eventually, it became obvious that sound amplification on The Green was required, a raised dais and an increasing number of carol sheets. By this time, the Crusader Group had disbanded, the group who planned the event was depleted and the responsibility for Carols on the Green was increasingly taken on by the leadership of the three churches in Nettleham.

Of course, The Old School room quickly became quite inadequate as a venue for refreshments, indeed, on some occasions, there were so many carollers packing in, and, there being only one door for entrance and exit, we feared for safety!

Firstly we tried serving them from a window at the Medical Centre to those gathering in the car park, but that was a chilly disaster. The following year, we secured the Old School Room, which was a cosy place to retire to, greatly appreciated, and conversations flowed.

As we became an established event, so our numbers increased with whole families turning out with their torches and hand-made lanterns, streaming down from all corners of the village. We only had one wet night, when we were made very welcome at All Saints Church.

Thankfully, All Saints once again came to our rescue, opening up the church for mince-pies, and offering, not only teas and coffees, but also delicious and heart-warming mulled wine! The provision of these welcome refreshments is shared between the churches.

For me, there is something very special about gathering as a community to sing carols under the stars, whilst gazing at familiar faces lit by the soft glow of Christmas tree lights and candles, to recognise together the true meaning of the Christmas we celebrate, and to enjoy well-loved carols, led by the Salvation Army band, which is as committed as we are to this wonderful occasion.

BUYING OR SELLING A PROPERTY A brief guide from Andrew & Co, Solicitors Buying or selling a property still ranks as one of the most stressful things you can go through in life.

Again, it doesn’t have to be that way. Make sure you engage a solicitor who is committed to giving value for money.

Stories of delays, unreturned telephone calls and unanswered questions abound, and as far as we can tell most of them are true!

When engaging the solicitor, be sure to ask for clear information about the fees that will be charged. It is worth making sure that the solicitor gives you full details, not only of the fees that he or she will be charging, but also of all other payments which will be incurred such as local searches, drainage searches, chancel searches, land charges fees, land registry fees, stamp duty and VAT. Please also check that there is no extra charge for completion of stamp duty forms, or acting for the building society or bank, and that fees for telegraphic transfers/computerised transfers of funds are included.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

When you select a solicitor to look after your house move it is worth asking about the IT used in the process, so that you are confident the work is undertaken in the most efficient way possible and it is also worth asking to see the solicitor’s quality or benchmarking policy. Nettleham Church Women’s Fellowship We, at Church Women’s Fellowship, are a friendly group of ladies who belong to All Saints Church or Nettleham Methodist Church. Our meetings are held in the small room of the Old School on the third Monday of each month (except August).

At Christmas, Easter and Harvest our meetings have a religious theme. For the rest of the year our speakers cover a wide range of topics. Our programme for the coming year includes talks about Volunteering Overseas, lesser known information on Lincoln Castle, a visit to Oberammergau and the work of the Agricultural Chaplain. After each talk we enjoy tea and biscuits and social time together. All for just £4 a year!

We have a party each New Year and a Strawberry Tea in the Summer. We also go out for lunch (with a shopping trip!) twice a year and for an afternoon tea.

The Bear Necessities An atheist was taking a walk through the forest.

“What majestic trees, what picturesque rivers, what beautiful birdsong” he said to himself.

Suddenly, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned around and there was a huge grizzly bear charging towards him.

He ran as fast as he could, but as he looked over his shoulder he saw that the bear was closing on him.

He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was closer still.

He tripped over a root, fell to the ground and quickly rolled over to pick himself up. However, the bear was now right on top of him, raising his paws ready to strike him.

The atheist cried out: “Oh my God!” Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent.

A bright light shone upon the man and a voice came out of the sky: “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I now to count you as a believer?”

The atheist said: “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the bear a Christian?”

The light faded and the sounds of the forest resumed.

The bear brought both paws together, bowed his head and said: “Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive. Amen.”

“You want to Have you ever thought about doing a Personal Challenge? Well it had never occurred to me, but when my friend Jill suggested it (after a couple of glasses of wine!) it seemed like a great idea!

A couple of other friends, Bev and Sara, were up for the challenge too, so we had a ready-made team. Where to go though?

Jill fancied trekking the Great Wall of China. Being just slightly fussy with my food I asked what was wrong with Hadrian’s Wall - all the fish and chips along the way sounded great. But the lure of the Great Wall won and before we knew it we had sent our registration fees off and received our information packs.

Despite applying in May 2009 time very soon passed and we began checking our vaccination status, propping up the profit line of Millets and Blacks, applying for our visas and, most importantly, training.

We had big plans of weekends away walking in beautiful parts of the country whilst training, but family commitments and work schedules soon got in the way the only weekend we managed to squeeze in was mid-March, when we jumped in the car and escaped to Whitby.

Although the trekking of the Great Wall was the main challenge, each of us had our own personal challenge with different aspects of the trip. Jill and Sara faced theirs the minute we were on the plane, but despite the length of the flight and the changing of aeroplanes, they both did absolutely brilliantly.

Once in Beijing we were met by our two guides and taken through the smog to our hotel. It was very basic, but cleanish! Over the course of the next 10 days we were to stay in some interesting accommodation none more so than the farmer’s house.

Here the four of us had to share a bed!

It was literally a plank of hard board with a lino covering. The rice-filled pillows and the 20 or so cockerels outside ensured that little sleep was gained that night!

We arrived late afternoon on the Friday to a dull and wet Whitby. The fish and chips at Magpies soon dispelled the cold feeling and the accommodation, Whitby Youth Hostel, was surprisingly welcoming. On Saturday we woke to a beautiful day, perfect for our plans. We caught a bus to Staithes and walked along the glorious Cleveland Way back to Whitby. It was a fabulous walk, slightly marred by Sara having an altercation with a plank of wood along the way, which resulted in a rather nasty bruise and lump on her leg!

The training was stepped up in the summer months as the walking times increased steadily from 2 hours around the local villages (you may have seen us?) to 8 hours in the Peak District. Despite all this training we all felt worried we had not done enough - the hills never seemed to get any easier!

On the 23 September 2010 we all said goodbye to our families and set off for Gatwick. We arrived at the designated point and finally got a good look at our fellow travellers. Our group consisted of 26 trekkers, 2 leaders and a doctor. Big sighs of relief all round as they all looked normal! Ahead of us we had a 14-hour plane journey, broken up by a 3-hour stop-over in Dubai - it was going to be a long day!

The trek to the farmer’s house was possibly the best day for all of us. We started off on Heaven’s Ladder - a mere 300 steps up to reach the base of the ladder and then a further 200 steep steps up. This section took about 2 hours out of the 7-hour trek.

There we all were in our walking boots, heavily utilizing our walking poles; 31 of us reached the top to whoops of delight to be brought straight back down to earth when a Chinese man sauntered by wearing casual clothes, flip flops and talking on his mobile!!

Another memorable climb was aptly named ‘Oh My God Steps’! These were so steep you had to climb them leaning forward and using your hands. It was actually quite frightening and felt like a lifetime to get to the top. Sara is pictured at the top of the steps, you can see how high we were from the background.

We trekked not only along the wall, but also through fields, in the undergrowth, along narrow ridges with drops either side, through remote villages and along roads.

The terrain was very varied, but absolutely beautiful. All our training had paid off as we all felt comfortable with the trekking and nobody suffered blisters, aches or pains.

The walking was helped by our fellow trekkers. They were a varied group of people, some on their own, some with their friends, and all with their own reasons for being there. A few people had sad tales behind the cause they were raising money for, but the most touching and humbling was Kevin who has Stage 4 Bowel Cancer, but had come to the Great Wall to tick it off his ‘bucket list’. He never complained or grumbled, but walked steadily throughout the trek having plenty of laughs along the way with his travelling companions Sue and Trina.

It was here that Bev faced her challenge: the toilets! (Although to be fair they challenged everyone at this location!). The “squat pan”, situated in an outhouse, was very pungent. Tiger balm under the nose was the order of the day for some trekkers.

Everyone knew where you had been when they saw your rolled up trouser legs! You certainly did not want your clothes to touch the floor in there - in fact in the majority of places it was more preferable to go to the toilet behind a tree, or in the undergrowth. We became a very adept team in the toilet department, with one bringing the tissue, one the Nappy sacks, one the hand sanitizer and the fourth acting as lookout!

The group as a whole gelled well and we certainly never wanted for laughter.

Breakfast and lunches were another matter though - they certainly left us wanting!

Nine days of bread, cucumber, tomato and fried eggs for breakfast with the odd day of ‘porridge’ thrown in, followed by lunch of bread, cucumber, tomato, spam and boiled eggs, with a trifle sponge finger as dessert, got just a tad boring for all!

This was the area where I faced my greatest challenge - the food. Being far too fussy, apart from bread, I do not eat any of the other items mentioned. Dinners were better and there were plenty of vegetables and rice on offer should anyone not wish to eat the ‘meat’ dishes. The worse meal though was near the end of the trek when someone fished a chicken’s head, complete with comb, out of a dish of broth and then subsequently found the feet - yuk!

By the end of our trek along the Great Wall of China we had experienced many “personal challenges” and walked about 100 miles. The journey home seemed very long and it took a good week for us all to establish a decent sleep pattern again.

Our families welcomed us, proud of our achievements and glad that we had all returned safely. All in all we had an absolutely fantastic experience, working well together as a team, providing support when needed and greatly enjoying each other’s company. We each raised money for our own favourite charities and between us we raised over £1,500.00.

We have already planned a meeting to sit down and discuss our next challenge in 2012, so watch this space!

Nettleham Carnival 2010 In these cold, dark and dreary days of winter, it is difficult to remember back to the summer and perhaps the hottest day of the year, Saturday 10 July, when the annual Nettleham Carnival was once again staged on The Green.

But it is good to know that the results of that day last much longer in the form of donations to deserving causes which the Carnival generates every year and which in 2010 go to Queen’s Park School in the form of a cheque for £650.00.

Hannah Anderson Smith, a dispensing advisor at David Burghardt Vision Care in Nettleham, celebrated twenty years with the company this year.

One of David Burghardt’s longest serving and most popular employees, Hannah first started working for the company in August 1990, after cheekily asking David, the owner of the practice when she could start during her interview!

Her bubbly personality and sunny disposition have won her many fans over the years and she has become a firm favourite with many clients.

Hannah is always at hand to advise clients on choosing the right frames and enjoys making people feel good about the way they look in their glasses.

“I love my job,” says Hannah. “I work with such an amazing team and meet some lovely people. Each day is different, although we always enjoy a giggle. My bosses David and Emma are great to work for. I simply cannot believe how quickly the time has flown here.”

Donation to Charity Proceeds from Nettleham Art Group’s sixth annual exhibition, held over the weekend 9/11 July, enabled the group to make a donation of £160.00 to the British Heart Foundation, its chosen charity for this year.

Over 350 people visited the exhibition this year and 52 paintings were sold, a record for our exhibitions. The Group was formed in September 2004 and meets on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in the Old School, Nettleham.

EMAIL CONTRACTS A brief guide from Andrew & Co, Solicitors Increasingly we all run much of our lives (whether it be business lives or private) through the internet and via email.

legal relations will be more or less taken as read and if we are paying for goods or services then the requirement for consideration is satisfied.

More and more questions arise as to whether an agreement made on the internet or via email is enforceable in the same way as a contract made in writing.

An offer by a business to sell, provided it is clear and certain, can be accepted almost by the press of a button and in many cases, once this is done, you are bound by the contract in the same way as if you would be if you had accepted an offer in the paper or elsewhere.

The answer is that provided that all the formalities necessary for a contract are present, then a contract made on the internet or email is legally binding and enforceable in the same way as any other contract.

There are essentially four elements to a contract: ● An intention to create legal relations. ● An offer. ● An acceptance. ● Consideration (in most transactions this is

purely and simply payment of the price).

Probably the most common e-transaction happens when we buy something. If we are dealing with a business the intention to create

Well Done Us! (Again!)

Amazing! We’ve done it yet again winning in the annual Lincolnshire Best Kept Villages and Small Towns competition for a third year running from 2008 - 2010.

Organised by the Community Council of Lincolnshire on behalf of the Lincolnshire Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, the judges have clearly decided that Nettleham continues to remain an outstandingly beautiful village in which to live (something that all we residents know anyway, but which it’s nice to have confirmed by impartial outsiders).

This must be a very unique achievement and one of which we should all be very proud indeed.

To celebrate our success, Lincolnshire County Council will install two special signs on the parish boundary. We will also receive a certificate, a plaque and a commemorative tree.

Talking of trees, I’m very concerned about the Horse Chestnut trees in and around the village this year. I visit these quite often, particularly in autumn, when I collect the chestnuts and bury them in the ground for my winter food store.

There’s hardly any this year and I’m rather worried about the coming winter months when it appears I may be going hungry, so please don’t be too cross with me if I raid your winter bird table for a snack!

I see that there is an explanation of why this is happening on page 7 of this edition of the magazine. I just hope that the trees manage to survive the winter and that next year they won’t suffer the same problem again, but I fear that this is not going to go away and we may well lose some of our treasured village trees!

You know I’ve really missed watching the village children having fun with their conker fights this year.

Well, that’s another year nearly over and as I settle down in my cosy drey for the winter, I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and hope that 2011 brings you all a healthy, peaceful and properous New Year.

RB Camera Club Sometimes club members venture out from the Village Hall into the surrounding area to practice their skills and learn new ones together.

For example in August we enjoyed an evening at Riseholme photographing vintage cars (and suitably dressed models!) while in September, with the nights drawing in, we ventured out into Nettleham to practice and learn, where necessary, the art of ‘Night Photography’ some of you may even have seen us and wondered what was going on!

Advice was given and shared among members on the best camera settings for each individual’s camera in this particular situation including setting, where possible, the correct ‘White Balance’ (to partly correct for the sodium street lighting), fixing the focus (as auto-focus does not always work as well in the dark), increasing the sensitivity of the camera’s sensor to a higher ISO setting (to partly allow for the low light), working out which ‘stop’ to use (to allow as much light to enter the camera as possible, whilst still having sufficient depth of field for the subject) and how to set up each of our cameras to take an exposure of several seconds.

Why not come along yourself one evening and see for yourself? The RB Camera Club meets in Nettleham Village Hall at 7.30pm almost every Friday evening throughout the year.

We started at the Nettleham Beck ford on Watermill Lane, where we set up our tripods and tried to photograph one of our members using natural light - sometimes supplemented by flashguns. Our club includes and welcomes both beginners and experts - and the many shades of expertise that exists between them.

On digital cameras members could see the results almost immediately and make suitable adjustments accordingly to take more and better photographs.

Mobile Skatepark Comes to Nettleham Again On Wednesday 18 August 2010 a mobile skatepark was again set up on Mulsanne Park car park from 10.00am - 3.00pm, enabling local youngsters to demonstrate their acrobatic skills on skateboards, scooters and bikes.

Tom Booth (aged 13, seen in photograph right) from Nettleham, who first suggested that the village should have its own skatepark facility, rather than having to engage in a 10-mile round trip to Welton, was there again with his friends, amongst whom was Patrick Andrews (aged 14, seen in photograph far right) of Scothern.

It is now over four years since the concept of a skatepark in Nettleham was first put to the Parish Council and inevitably the boys are disappointed that progress is so slow in establishing this facility for youngsters in the village.

However, with planning permission having now been granted for the development of the Lincoln Rugby Club site off Lodge Lane which could incorporate such a facility, the dream may now soon become a reality.

An alternative site is also being considered adjacent to the Mulsanne car park and a Public Meeting is being held on Tuesday 18 January 2011 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall on this subject.

Perhaps the day when a Nettleham skatepark is opened may now not be too far away!

Nettleham Twinning Association On the 16 October the Nettleham Twinning Association held a “Talk and Evaluation” evening with David Barby of TV’s “Bargain Hunt” and “Flog It”.

Thank you all so much for your support of the Shoebox Appeal.

This has been a fantastic year as once again you have all been so very generous.

The sell-out event was a great success David was an excellent speaker, being both highly entertaining and informative. The stories behind some of the items, brought by members of the audience for valuation, were truly fascinating.

Next Year (2011) it is Nettleham’s turn to host the twinning visit, which will take place over the Easter weekend. This will give us the opportunity to enjoy once again an Easter egg hunt, visits and activities which are currently being organised by the twinning committee.

Giving When it Really Counts Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease.

Her only chance of recovery was a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes I’ll do it, if it will save her.” As the transfusion progressed, he lay in the bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the colour returning to her cheeks.

Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die straight away?”

The little boy had misunderstood the doctor and thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

All the charities were happy to have made more precious pennies for their good causes and certainly would have liked more customers, but perhaps if you didn’t attend this year, you’ll be free to come in 2011.

Delicious lunches were again provided for us to enjoy and we thank the ladies for excellent refreshments again this year.

Chevrette provided musical entertainment, again at no charge and I have thanked them on behalf of you all.

At the time of writing 163 shoe boxes are now ready to make their way to Romania as well as boxes of cuddly toys, stationery, hats, scarves, jumpers, cardigans and blankets. Many more of you felt able to sign the Gift Aid form this year and this will mean increased funds to support all projects. The response to the appeal for hats and scarves was wonderful again this year - most boxes contained a hat and there are more which can be handed out to the children. How much joy they will bring to Romanian families at Christmas time and indeed for many months to come.

Once again support for the appeal has come from far and wide - ie Barnsley, Doncaster, Gainsborough, Nottingham, Swansea, Scunthorpe, Leeds, London, Lincoln and all the villages around us.

Both St Mary’s Primary School and Cherry Willingham Primary School have also made contact and arrangements have been made for the lorry to call there. So many folk told us how much they enjoyed packing the boxes so please will you pass on this “thank you” to those you know who will not receive a copy of Nettleham News.

A NEW BROOM...

Two brooms were hanging in the cleaning cupboard and after a while they got to know each other so well, they decided to get married.

One broom was, of course, the bride-broom, the other was the groom-broom.

On the day of the wedding, the bride-broom looked very beautiful in her white dress.

The groom-broom was handsome and suave in his morning suit.

The wedding service, attended by all the other brushes and cleaning utensilsin the cupboard, was lovely.

After the wedding, at the reception, the bride-broom leaned over and whispered to the groom-broom: “I think I am going to have a baby broom!”

“That’s impossible!” said the groom-broom, “We haven’t even swept together!”

Good News for Deepdale Lane After several months of campaigning, the 30mph speed limit signs are to be repositioned on Deepdale Lane.

The signs will be located near the entrance of the new commercial development, providing an additional 150 metres of speed limit zone for extra safety.

A letter from the Highways Division of Lincolnshire County Council has been received by Nettleham Parish Council, indicating that the work will take place when their schedule permits.

Our thanks go to the residents of Deepdale Lane who completed the questionnaire in 2009, indicating their overwhelming support of our suggestion to extend the speed limit zone. Let’s hope that the relocation will not take too long.

Baby Signing New fun, friendly and easy Baby Signing classes have just started in Nettleham.

Carers and little ones learn to sign together by singing and signing to well-known nursery rhymes and fun children’s songs.

Props, puppets, toys, bubbles and music add to the enjoyment and there’s always time at the end for a drink, biscuit and chat. The classes are designed for babies from newborn to around 18 months, providing a gentle, calm environment to play, learn and have fun.

Why sign with your baby? Babies and young toddlers have so much that they long to communicate to you, from expressing their basic needs like hunger and tiredness to telling you about the world they are experiencing for the first time; however, they are not yet physically able to talk. This gap in communication often results in desperate tears of frustration when a little one cannot make themselves understood. Learning just a few simple signs can make a huge difference in enabling a child to express their needs calmly and clearly and share their experiences with their loved ones. A baby can’t talk, but has a lot to tell you!

On the Threshold It’s that time of year again, when we rack our brains to think of things to buy for people; worry about whether we’ve got enough food and drink in; go to all the parties we can manage to squeeze into December; decorate our house with lights; and maybe, just maybe, remember what Christmas is all about.

Here’s a little reminder about the last bit.

It’s in the form of a fun competition you can do at home. See who can find the most mentions of chocolate hidden in the story below. You could read the story out to the family and give them a chocolate every time they find one mentioned...

Too much chocolate this Christmas?

It all started a long, long time ago, hundreds of years before Jesus was born.

First the prophet Isaiah foretold that a child would be born who would be called ‘wonderful counsellor, mighty God, everlasting father, Prince of Peace’. Some people thought his prophesies were a bit flakey!

Then Micah foretold that a ruler over all Israel would come from Bethlehem, so people were expecting another of those heroes who would save Israel from its enemies. Hundreds of years went by without the prophesies being fulfilled and people thought God must be taking time out. But then things started to happen.

God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth with a message for a young woman called Mary, who was promised as a wife to a man called Joseph. Gabriel wispa’d to Mary that God had chosen her to bear a son whom she must call Jesus and would be known as the Son of God. Mary was worried by this news because she knew there would soon be snickers from people about an unmarried woman having a baby, but the angel told her not to worry, as this would be a miracle from God.

Some time earlier, in a land far away in the east, some wise men were studying the night sky. They were real smarties and they had found a bright new object in the sky near the Milky Way. Was it Mars, or maybe a new galaxy? Whatever it was they decided to follow it. So they crossed the desert on their caramels, stopping on the way for a picnic, and eventually arrived in Jerusalem. They asked King Herod where the new King of the Jews was, so that they could worship him. But Herod tried to fudge the issue and asked them to go back and tell him when they had found the baby. So they set off again on their caramels.

Not too far away, some shepherds were out in the fields looking after their sheep.

It was way after eight and they were getting sleepy, when suddenly an angel appeared to them and the glory of God shone all around them. They were terrified!

At first they thought it was some sort of black magic. The angel told them not to be frightened and that a saviour called Christ the Lord had been born in Bethlehem and that they should go there, where they would find the baby lying in a manger. Then a host of angels appeared, praising God, and this gave them a real boost.

When the angels had gone, the shepherds set off across the fields towards Bethlehem. It was a cold night and the ground was crunchie under their feet.

When they got there they found the baby Jesus just as the angel had said. They were so amazed and excited they told everyone they saw what had happened. It became their main topic of conversation.

Not long before the baby was due, Mary and Joseph had to leave Nazareth and go to Bethlehem for the census. When they got there it was so busy that there wasn’t any room for them at the inn and they had to stay in a stable. No hotel on Quality Street for this poor couple!

After leaving Herod’s palace, the three smarties from the east followed the star until it stopped. They were full of Turkish delight to find it had stopped over the place where Jesus was. When they saw Him they bowed down and worshipped Him. Then they gave him their bounty of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They were going to tell Herod where the baby was, but God warned them in a dream that Herod was up to his old twix again, so they went home a different way.

Some other extraordinary things were happening too.

And the rest, as they say, is history - do you wish you’d been there?

We hope you enjoyed the story. The names of the chocolates mentioned in it are at the foot of the page - did you find them all?

Do you wish you could have been there to see the baby Jesus like the shepherds and the wise men did? It would have been a pretty crowded stable if everyone who wanted to had been able to be there. In fact it would have needed to be a double decker (that’s the last chocolate reference...honestly).

That’s why Christmas is so important to us today. Every year it reminds us that actually we can still meet with Jesus, if we believe in who He is. In a way we can still go to Bethlehem, just like those ordinary local shepherds and those wise men from a foreign land. We hope and pray that you find a way to meet with Jesus this Christmas. It will change your life.

Lincoln Rugby Club Development: Planning Particulars/location of development: Application number: 125006 Date of application: 9 October 2009 Planning application for erection of proposed rugby club pavillion and club house and creation of new rugby pitches, with associated parking facilities and access road at land off Lodge Farm, Lodge Lane, Nettleham, Lincoln LN2 2RS

Particulars of decision The West Lindsey District Council hereby give notice in pursuance of the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, that planning permission has been granted for the carrying out of the development in accordance with the application and plans submitted, subject to the following conditions:

Conditions stating the time by which the development must be commenced: 1. The development hereby permitted shall be begun before the expiration of three years from the date of this permission.

Reason: To conform with Section 91(1) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as amended).

Conditions which apply, or require matters to be agreed, before the development is commenced: 2. No development shall take place until details of the number, location and design of the floodlights to be erected around two of the pitches, including measures to ensure that light spillage is minimised beyond the playing area, have been agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

Reason: To minimise the impact of the lighting on the local environment in accordance with policy NBE18 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

3. No development shall take place until details of the proposals for surface water drainage and disposal, which shall be based on sustainable drainage principles and an assessment of the hydrological and hydrogeological context of the development, have been agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

Reason: To prevent the increased risk of flooding by ensuring satisfactory means of surface water disposal.

4. No development shall take place until details of the colour of the roof sheeting, which shall be a dark shade, has been agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

Reason: To ensure an acceptable choice in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

10. The scheme of landscaping submitted with the application shall be carried out within 12 months from the date development is commenced, or within such other period, or periods, as may be agreed in writing beforehand by the local planning authority.

Reason:To ensure the timely implementation of the scheme in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

11. The bat and bird boxes agreed under the requirements of condition 5 shall be provided before the development is brought into use.

Reason:To ensure the timely provision of the facilities in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

12. The footpath from the site to the public right of way along the northern boundary shall be completed before the development is brought into use.

Reason:To ensure the timely completion of that part of the development in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

5. No development shall take place until details of the number and location of bat and bird boxes to be provided within the site have been agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

13. The access from Lodge Lane, the car park, cycle parking, disabled parking facilities and the overflow parking area, shall all be completed and available for use before the development is brought into use, following which they shall be kept free of all permanent obstruction.

Reason: To ensure the interests of local wildlife are respected in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

Reason:To ensure the timely provision of the facilities and their retention in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

6. No development shall take place until a detailed assessment of ground conditions over the site has been undertaken, including drainage and topography, in order to identify constraints which could affect playing field quality and, based on the results of that assessment, a detailed scheme in accordance with the guidance note ‘Natural Turf for Sport’ (Sport England, March 2000) has been agreed in writing by the local

Reason:To ensure such events are managed adequately to minimise their impact on the local environment in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

15. The scheme for the construction of the pitches agreed under the requirements of condition 6 shall be complied with in its entirety before the construction of the clubhouse is commenced, unless written agreement to a variation of this requirement is first obtained from the local planning authority.

Reason:To ensure the pitches are provided to the agreed standard in a timely manner.

Conditions which apply or relate to matters which are to be observed following completion of the development: 16. None of the pitches, nor the floodlights, shall be used after 21.30hrs.

Reason:To prevent undue light pollution and unreasonable impact on the local environment in accordance with policies STRAT 1 and NBE 18 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

17. The clubhouse shall be closed and vacated no later than 23.30hrs.

Reason:To prevent unreasonable impact on the local environment in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

18. Any trees or other elements of the approved landscaping which die, or are removed within 5 years from the date of planting, shall be replaced in the following planting season with species of the same variety.

Reason:To ensure the scheme is properly established in accordance with policy STRAT 1 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

19. Otherwise than in an emergency, no amplified sound shall be broadcast in the open, unless it is arranged and managed in accordance with the Event Management Plan required by condition 14.

20. The arrangements in the Plan agreed under the requirements of condition 14 shall be implemented on all such occasions.

Reason:To ensure the agreed standard of management is in place for such events.

21. Within 12 months from the date development is commenced, a Travel Plan shall be submitted to the local planning authority detailing the measures to be put in place to encourage people using the site to travel there by means other than the motor car and, where this is not practical, to promote car sharing; the means by which the measures are to be put into practice and a timetable for doing so, following which the agreed Plan shall be implemented in accordance with the timescales identified and shall remain in force until such time as the Plan is amended or replaced following the review required by condition 22.

Reason: To ensure sustainable transport elements are promoted to reduce the overall traffic impact of the development in accordance with policies STRAT 1 and SUS 2 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review.

Permission Conditions 22. A full review of the Travel Plan shall be carried out and submitted to the local planning authority no later than 12 months after the date the initial Plan has been agreed in writing by the local planning authority and, following written agreement to its contents, the actions in the reviewed Travel Plan shall be implemented in accordance with the timescales specified.

Reason: To ensure the sustainable transport elements contained in the Plan are implemented to reduce the overall traffic impact of the development in accordance with policies STRAT 1 and SUS 2 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review.

23. Following implementation of the reviewed Travel Plan required by condition 22, it shall be monitored on an annual basis for a further three years from the date it is agreed in writing by the local planning authority.

A written report on this monitoring shall be submitted annually to the local planning authority and any further amendments to the Travel Plan, identified as a result of the monitoring process, shall be implemented in accordance with the timescales specified.

Reason: To ensure the sustainable transport elements contained in the Plan are implemented to reduce the overall traffic impact of the development in accordance with policies STRAT 1 and SUS 2 of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review.

Reasons for decision There is a need for the club to relocate and this requires a countryside location because of the scale and nature of the development. There are no other suitable sites which are available to develop within the timescales available. This site adjoins an extensive area occupied by sports pitches and is on the outskirts of the village with a direct access to the strategic road network. The existing landscape can accommodate the development and extensive tree planting is included in the application, as a result of which the proposal will not have an adverse impact in visual terms. The layout and design of the site and the building are to a high quality.

After weighing these issues against the concerns expressed locally, the accessibility of the site and the impact the development is likely to have on the local road network, the development is considered to be acceptable within the framework of national planning policies for recreational development and with policies STRAT 1 Development requiring planning permission, STRAT 12 Development in open countryside, STRAT 13 Undeveloped breaks between settlements and green wedges around Lincoln, SUS 1 Development proposals and transport choice, SUS 5 Cycle parking facilities and NBE 18 Light pollution of the West Lindsey Local Plan First Review 2006.

You must use a Planning Appeal Form when making your appeal. If requesting forms from the Planning Inspectorate, please state the appeal form you require.

The Secretary of State can allow a longer period for giving notice of an appeal, but he will not normally be prepared to use this power unless there are special circumstances which excuse the delay in giving notice of appeal.

The Secretary of State need not consider an appeal if it seems to him that the local planning authority could not have granted planning permission for the proposed development, or could not have granted it without the conditions they imposed, having regard to the statutory requirements, to the provisions of any development order and to any directions given under a development order.

In practice, the Secretary of State does not refuse to consider appeals solely because the local planning authority based their decision on a direction given by him. Please note only the applicant possesses the right to appeal.

Purchase Notices If either the local planning authority, or the Secretary of State, refuses permission to develop land, or grants it subject to conditions, the owner may claim that he can neither put the land to a reasonably beneficial use in its existing state, nor render the land capable of a reasonably beneficial use by the carrying out of any development which has been or would be permitted.

In these circumstances, the owner may serve a purchase notice on the Council in whose area the land is situated. This notice will require the Council to purchase his interest in the land in accordance with the provisions of Part VI of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

After the relief and satisfaction that planning permission had been granted, the club moved on to the equally important issue of fund raising. It may well be that in addition to the funds already promised, we will need another £500,000.

The launch of this programme started with a ‘Fun Day’ on 9 October 2010.

These events will continue throughout the season (and beyond if required) to include: buy-a-brick, foundation life membership and the opportunity to sponsor a particular room, facility or equipment.

All sections of the club have been set fund-raising targets of their own choice, some of which have been very successful in the past. Included will be monies raised by both the annual Players’ Dinner and Annual Ball, both of which have been very successful in past years.

At this early stage, contributions and donations have been encouraging, including those from some of our Nettleham members. In the course of the next few weeks every member of the club from all sections, mini, junior, senior and social/non-playing will be receiving a copy of our ‘Relocation Appeal’ brochure which explains what we are trying to do and why we need to do it.

The club has engaged professional advisers specifically reference ground works and to specify, for costing purposes, the clubhouse details.

Fund-raising, getting quotations and work timetable mean that if all goes well, we hope to be playing at Lodge Lane in September 2012.

Nettleham Herit Heritage at Risk

Winter Talk: April 2010

In the years after World War II many areas experienced rebuild, or new build, which often necessitated the removal of older structures, resulting in a great loss of our historical and cultural heritage. Campaigns, both local and national, endeavoured to stem the loss and led to legislation and the eventual listing of buildings of historic and architectural quality, which continues to the present day.

Vic Hughes came to talk to us in his guise as a Benedictine medieval brother employed as a scribe. This was particularly appropriate to Nettleham, as it is likely that a scribe worked for Edward I whilst he lodged with Bishop John Dalderby in our Bishops’ Palace during the Parliament held in the Chapter House of Lincoln Cathedral in January 1301. It is thought a scribe would take notes during the proceedings and then scribe the official documents later.

Most of the listed buildings in Nettleham were registered in the 1960’s and 70’s and there has been no general check since.

Nationally there is growing concern that there ought to be a review of the state of our best historic and architectural stock of buildings and monuments. Heritage Lincolnshire has been contracted to run a pilot scheme throughout the county to check every listing and record the state.

To do this, teams of volunteer Heritage at Risk stewards are being trained to carry out the survey.

In Nettleham all the original listings are still there and generally owners are proud of their properties and go to great lengths to ensure all the special features are retained in good repair. To quote one case - after being flooded, the owner removed the lower levels of wall plaster to find that this contained horse-hair. EU regulations now ban the use of horse hair, so the owner had to resort to goat hair. This sort of story is not uncommon.

All Saints Church is listed and still retains the majority of its features. One recent major change is the infill of the north arch of the tower to create a kitchen/toilet facility and also display the millennium tapestry. Both the stone coffin near the church door and the tombstone to the Gardiner post-boy are separately listed.

Monuments, bridges, telephone boxes and other street furniture are protected.

The once magnificent entrance gates of Nettleham Hall on Hall Lane are rapidly deteriorating and now very much at risk.

A large farm complex in the village has been so altered, no doubt long ago, that most of the agricultural features have been removed. Will such changes result in the removal of listed status? We have yet to find out.

The pioneer work of Heritage Lincolnshire in reviewing listed items is being carefully monitored and it is hoped that it will eventually become a national scheme.

So the Chapter House is a good place to start, as Vic told us that against the central pillar there was almost certainly a lean-to desk for the scribe to work, taking his notes and maybe starting to prepare the actual document.

Vic then told us about the history of writing, a process taken for granted today, but which took thousands of years to evolve. It is thought to have started in Babylonia and Mesopotamia, with the first marks recording counting and time. The hand was used as a calculator - the fingers have three joints, so four fingers give you twelve, then the first joint of the thumb records the first twelve, the second the second twelve, then you move on to the other hand for the third and fourth twelve and then you count a final or fifth twelve giving a total of sixty. It sounds rather complicated, but we begin to see where some of our divisions of time and measure originate.

Cuniform writing, a wedge-shaped script, originated from the city of Isin, south of Baghdad, where a time capsule in the temple wall records that King Ishme-Dagan wrote on a cone-shaped stone telling his story over 4,000 years ago. Additionally a farmer named Zizin borrowed two-thirds of a silver shekel from the temple to buy corn for his crop. This was also recorded on a cone, which had an outer clay case. This was given to the farmer and if the clay case was deliberately broken, this indicated some form of dispute.

Later, the Egyptians wrote on papyrus and the Chinese used hand-made paper from mulberry leaves. By the time of Ptolemy, circa 3-200BC, vellum, or parchment, obtained from animal skin was introduced.

By the mid-15C AD in Holland printing was done with hand-carved wood blocks, known as the art of xylography. Examples of printing utilising moveable type exist from the 1480s and 1493.

In about the 1470s in England, Caxton and Wynkyn de Worde, began printing using skills learnt in Holland. Paper manufactured from rag or linen was used in about 1493 and some of this has lasted to the present day. Inferior wood pulp paper lasts around a hundred years.

In the medieval era only the upper classes of society, including the clergy, could read and write. Universities trained the clergy and doctors, teachers and lawyers were all priests.

In later years, the household priest would teach the children of the family to read and write.

Books from the 1600’s were generally bound in vellum, the paper being made of linen or rag.

Animal horn was a very versatile material.

After being soaked for several weeks and then heated, it could be formed into drinking cups, hunting horns, musical instrument, etc. It could also be cut open and flattened and, after it was then boiled in oil, became translucent and could be used in windows, or to protect a candle flame from draughts. This latter was called a lant-horn, which evolved into the word ‘lantern’.

Horn was also used to make a wide variety of utensils: combs, spoons, dice, dice cups, buttons, handles for tools and horn books for teaching. In fact it appears to have been the medieval plastic!

Wax tablets continued to be used at the same time, especially for ephemeral purposes, being easier to use than vellum, a quill holder and ink well. The notes could be later transcribed onto vellum. The writing quill usually comprised swan or goose feathers, as they have a nice round barrel. Today turkey feathers are used.

Ink is made from oak galls. These were boiled in water and then lamp black, or soot, was added, along with gum Arabic or egg white. The result should last for thousands of years.

To provide artificial light by which to work, candles or rush/oil lights were used. The scribe always had a slope on which to work. Vellum or parchment was also used for drum skins, lampshades and window covering and was a versatile material. Official scribed documents were sealed, not signed, as in early medieval times kings could not write.

Vic showed us many instruments used by a medieval scribe and many examples of work he has collected over the years. He also told us a little about medieval pilgrimages and showed us a lead ampulla which was used to hold holy water, which could than be used to heal the sick, or sprinkle over fields to ensure good crops.

He also told us about the custom in medieval times of putting holy relics under the altar in a church or cathedral. The closer to Jesus or the Virgin Mary this relic had been, the more powerful it was believed to be.

Vic told the following story, declaring it to be true. Christianity came to the Roman Empire in the time of the Emperor Constantine I, known as the Great. He accepted Christianity in York, probably influenced by his mother the Dowager Empress Helena. The Empress Helena was already a Christian and the story goes that she was told where the true cross was, and this was brought out and venerated. It was taken to the Holy Land, but stolen in a raid by the Syrians, who took it back to Syria. The Roman Emperor Heraclius subsequently retrieved it, took it to Constantinople and then to the Holy Land.

By this time we are in the seventh century, and a sliver of the true cross was burnt, the ash mixed with clay and made into a pilgrim token.

This was a fascinating talk, backed by a superb display of artefacts including writing samples, implements and materials and with Vic dressed as his alter ego: a medieval monk working as a scribe, it was a most informative, entertaining and enjoyable evening.

tage Association Two types of record are generated, depending upon whether the artefact is treasure or non-treasure. An example of treasure is a gold torque, one of non-treasure is a medieval lead pilgrim badge. There has been a steady increase in finds, especially from metal detectorists.

Adam has recorded 21,000 finds so far, 53% from completely new sites, of which an average of 1.55 are discovered each month. Adam then has to do a lot of research on these sites.

Medieval sites tend to be on slightly higher ground, so it is often possible to predict where settlements may be.

AGM Winter Talk: May 2010 Following the AGM agenda, Adam Daubney talked about the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS). Adam started as an Assistant Keeper of Archaeology at a museum, leaving this job in 2003 to join the Portable Antiquities Scheme in Lincolnshire. Originally funded by central government, the current funding ran out at the end of March and they are currently bidding for new funding. Most counties in England and Wales (but not in Scotland or Ireland) have a PAS. An item or items found only have to be declared if it/they are treasure, so many, eg coins, jewellery, etc, need not be declared.

So why is it necessary to study and record all archaeological finds? There are records for 15,000 - 17,000, but many of these items have since disappeared over the years. For example in 1816, a medieval hanging bowl was found near Lincoln, in the River Witham, but it is now lost.

In 1824 a head of Bacchus was found in the Bail, it was last seen in 1830, then turned up again in Amsterdam, but has since disappeared.

The Treasure Act of 1996 says finds should be reported if the artefact(s) is/are: ● over 300 years old ● contain more than 10% precious metal ● two or more coins of precious metal ● ten or more coins of non-precious metal ● all prehistoric base metal hoards There were 770 recorded cases of treasure in 2007 and 850 in 2008. Lincolnshire, however, is surprisingly low on treasure finds.

Many people own metal detectors today, and after some debate it was decided to introduce a voluntary scheme.

Adam told us he spent a lot of his time on education. He then went on to give us some local examples of finds. In Saxilby Iron Age coins and gold pellets were found. They dated from about 40BC and were examples of some of the earliest coins, with abstract horse design and reflected contact with the Mediterranean.

It is important, if you find an artefact, to record its context, both in the horizontal and vertical planes. However 90% of archaeology is found in the topsoil, mainly due to ploughing. Adam visits many locations to enable objects to be brought in for recording and every object is meticulously recorded, many images being put on internet social network sites.

Adam has now forged good relationships, based on trust, with many local metal detectorists.

He cited a hoard of more than 160 medieval silver pennies found at Apley. The last dated coin was 1332. However he wondered why they were hoarded. Perhaps they were buried by people leaving home for a while, perhaps to go to war. Compare with Samuel Pepys’ Diary,

when he records burying his cheeses in the garden when he left his house as the Great Fire of London approached!

Adam also told us of the south-east Lincoln hoard, found only the week before, consisting of six Spanish-American coins, which are large, with a high gold content and very rare. They were struck in Nicaragua, Brazil and Santiago and are worth eight escudos. They date from the Napoleonic era, dated 1801,1790, 1800.

In 1928 the Stamford Mercury recorded many other similar coins found in the same spot.

In 1824 the area was woodland, but ten years later a map shows that the woodland had disappeared.

The Nettleham Hoard was found in 2005, it consists of late Roman solidi, dated up to 392AD. These were usually found on army sites, but there is no evidence of a nearby structure.

Three of these coins were bought by The Collection museum. Roman gold coins tend to be found along known routes, so Nettleham appears to have links with the officialdom of late Roman Lincoln - perhaps there was a late Roman survival within the parish. Finds are so important because they give us these sorts of clues. The Nettleham temple lintel was probably found near the pond on the Police HQ land and moved to Willowfield Avenue at some stage.

In September 2008 at Stixwold, an early Roman (just after 16AD) tribute penny was found from the time of Tiberius. At Stainton by Langworth an Anglo-Saxon gold sword pommel was found.

It was bought for £100,000, but the recent Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire hoard has devalued sword pommels as there are now eighty or so in existence. The largest hoard found very recently in the south of England, consisting of 50,000 Roman coins will soon be in the news, or perhaps by now it has been, although I have not noticed it, but then I have been away a lot this summer and may have missed it.

The Staffordshire Saxon hoard, perhaps a votive offering is all seventh century male objects.

There is a piece of gold with verse 35 of Chapter ten of the Biblical book of Numbers inscribed on it. It may have been a good luck symbol for going into battle. (The verse says: “And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said: Rise up, Lord, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee”).

When treasure is found an archaeologist prepares a report and then it is offered to a number of different museums. If they are interested, then several auctioneers discuss it and arrive at a valuation, which is the full fair market value of the object(s).

This was a fascinating talk, giving us insight into the work of a small finds officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and gave us a glimpse of possible life in Roman Nettleham.

PLACES TO VISIT KINEMA IN THE WOODS AT WOODHALL SPA The Kinema in the Woods at Woodhall Spa is unique among the cinemas of this country, for not only is it one of the oldest picture houses still in existence, having opened its doors for the first time in 1922, but is probably the only one now remaining that operates by projecting the film from behind the screen, a system known as ‘back or rear projection’.

Beckside Pre-school We have had an extremely busy year so far at Beckside Pre-school. At the end of the summer term we said goodbye to our children who started school in September.

It’s lovely to see some of them settle in to their new surroundings at Nettleham Infants and they often peer over the fence to wave and tell us what they have been doing! Thank you also to all the parents who have supported us during their child’s time at Beckside. We also said goodbye to Louise Fisk who has worked at Beckside Pre-school for many years. Louise has taken on the role of teaching assistant at Nettleham Infants School. We wish her all the best for the future!

In June we enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ picnic with the children, families and carers in our garden - thankfully the weather held out for us! The children brought their teddy bears for the occasion and enjoyed outdoor activities, ice-creams and playing with their friends. It was great to chat with parents, families and carers and to share the children’s achievements. Thank you to ALS Entertainment for providing us with the outdoor games.

At the end of June we had a “Ladies’ Night” organised by Tina Clynes, one of our members of staff, who put in a huge amount of time and effort to organise what was a great success and a fantastic evening, raising a staggering £965 for our sensory garden. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Tina and everyone who was involved and supported us for this event.

During the summer holidays, Jay of Living Willows worked very hard to design and create the sensory garden for our children to enjoy. The garden is now completed and the children have been exploring their senses, learning about plants, how they grow and how we care and nurture them.

The children are able to explore the shrubs, herbs, a water feature, colourful mosaic and a bug hotel! The garden also has a wigwam and sheltered arbour which we use for stories, chatting and making friends. We are very fortunate to have a large outdoor area which is an on-going development, with other features and equipment planned for the future. Jay recently created a beautiful willow dome which has many uses. The children have enjoyed snack time, (which they often help to prepare), stories, role play and weaving colourful ribbons around the dome, to name just a few.

Making friends in our sensory garden

Our surrounding community is a wonderful resource for learning and we often visit the local library for story time. These visits enrich the children’s learning, stimulate their language development and increases their attention span and ability to focus.

Visitors this year have included a police constable and a paramedic. The children were able to explore a real ambulance and had great fun pressing the siren!

All these visits have been very positive and have encouraged the children to ask questions and understand the job roles of other people in the community. Another recent visitor was Marley the Pat dog and his owner Cherie. From this visit and by listening to the children’s interests we developed our home corner into a Vets’ Surgery. The children have been bringing in photographs of their pets to show us and to display in our role play comer.

To celebrate Harvest this year we visited the residents at Linelands care home and presented them with harvest produce, which was very much appreciated.

The residents are always pleased to see us and it really does lift their spirits to see the children’s smiling faces. Thank you to all our parents who supported this visit.

Another visit is hopefully planned for this Christmas.

In July we all dressed up yet again for the Nettleham Carnival. We were very proud of our children and the effort which had gone into some really fabulous costumes and because of this we won Best Walking Group for our Wizard of Oz theme. Well done everyone!

In June we had our Ofsted inspection which was very positive. Here are some of the quotes from the inspection report, which is now available to view online.

Nettleham Pre-school Well the start of this pre-school year has been busy. We’ve been on a nature walk and found lots of beautiful leaves, conkers and other interesting objects. Our week of celebrating our pets went really well and we were visited by a guinea pig, rabbit, kitten, puppy, chicken and some giant African land snails (it has to be said that some of the pets were a bit cuddlier than others!). We have also done lots of cooking, including biscuits, cakes and soup.

We’ve been lucky enough to secure a grant from the Lottery Fund to support us in our venture into offering a Breakfast Club, as well as a Lunch Club, for the children.

Available from 8.40am to 9.40am, we offer the children a healthy breakfast of cereal (such as Weetabix or cornflakes), brown bread toast, teacakes or fruit. The grant goes towards paying for the hall for the extra time needed to operate these Clubs.

We received a generous donation from the Co-op this year, allowing us to purchase a small shed where the children can draw, do puzzles or just chill when they go outside.

The money also enabled us to stock the shed with paper, crayon, paint and lots more. Finally we bought a beautiful mat for our indoor reading area. A big thank you to the Co-op from the children, staff, parents and committee members!

Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have had our already rather beautiful outside space made even more fantastic.

We are having a new surface laid along the side of the Village Hall and new gates into the garden. We also plan to create some raised beds to make it easier for the children to grow a variety of flowers, vegetables and fruit (pictures in a future edition of the Nettleham News). The large, but rather old and leaky shed, that we use to store our outside equipment, is also going to be replaced by a new ‘barn’!

A big thank you to Waitrose and all their customers who supported us with their green token scheme, the money raised from this is going towards our new storage shed. The final big improvement to our garden is the installation of a growing willow structure. We are all very excited by all this work!

Finally I am pleased to announce that both myself and Suzanne have passed our Foundation Degree in Children’s Services (Early Childhood) with a Merit awarded to each of us. Suzanne has now started her third year to gain her BA and will then finish by achieving Early Years Professional Status, whilst I am taking a break from assignments, presentations and exams for a while! The graduation ceremony was held on a beautiful sunny day in July at Lincoln Cathedral and was a day that neither of us will forget - amazing!

We have recently had our Annual General Meeting, and would like to welcome our new committee members and say farewell and thank you to those leaving. Joining a committee is an immensely rewarding experience and if any of you feel you have something to offer (maybe you have some amazing fund-raising ideas), please get in touch on the telephone number at the end of this article.

SAVE LIVES Helping your local community is such a rewarding thing to do, so please consider joining our group, even if it’s just one duty a month, it would be of great help. Being on call doesn’t interfere with your normal daily routine - it works alongside it.

Fundraising News Mavis and Mandy, two of our key fund raisers, have been busy over the summer and early autumn. Firstly with the carnival on 10 July, where our Teddy Bear Tombola proved very popular, along with the sale of jams and other goodies and our balloon race. They were ably assisted throughout the afternoon by other members of the group. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who visited the stand and supported us so magnificently.

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions: Who can be a First Responder?

Anyone aged 18 or over, with a full driving licence. You will have to be able to carry a 15kg bag of equipment and be able to kneel and administer CPR for up to 20 minutes.

This year, Stuart sent the balloons on their way from just outside the Co-op. At the closing date of 7 August, the card returned from the balloon travelling the furthest distance was from Snarford (4.8 miles) and we paid out prizes to the balloon owner and finder. However, in early October we had another card returned with a rather sorry looking yellow balloon, which had been found and returned from Varkaus in Finland - it had travelled over 1,200 miles!

Although this was officially outside the closing date, we sent Juha a letter and small monetary reward by way of a thank you. Who knows how far next year’s balloons will travel?

More recently, we had a stall at Nettleham Cares, where Mavis, Mandy, Steve, David, Dominique, John and June were kept busy.

Our jams, chutneys and tombola helped us to raise a little over £200. Marcus and Brian’s attendance back in May at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby, near Spilsby, where they provided first aid cover for the Wold Biker Run, also made a welcome boost to our funds.

Sunday, in particular was a beautiful day and the show itself was proving very popular with old and young alike. Whilst the tractors (both modern and vintage) were very good, the shire horses certainly drew the crowds.

We are able to operate the scheme on a 24-hour, 7-day week basis, but are struggling for some extra support during some days and we would certainly be delighted to hear from anyone who is actively retired, works from home, or works on a part-time basis.

Sadly, one of our Responders left recently and we have several more that are likely to be leaving us over the next few months or so. To enable us to continue to provide 24/7 cover, it is vital that we attract some new people to the group who would be willing to take up the very rewarding role of a First Responder.

Readers may remember that on page 61 of the last (autumn 2010) edition of Nettleham News, there was an article about Prospect House, the large house on the corner of Lodge Lane and Sudbrooke Lane.

Since then, research carried out by Rodney Jessop, has supplied some (though not all) answers to the questions arising from the series of old photographs which were discovered there.

As stated in the previous article, George Wingad and Elizabeth Proctor married on 14 October 1852 and their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born 12 May 1862.

She appears to have been their only child, although that is not certain. They also appear to have been living in Prospect House in 1881 and 1891. By 1901 Mary is living there alone, both parents having died in 1899. Mary appears to have lived until 1950 and to have died unmarried.

So she must be the Miss Wingad listed in the directories until at least 1933.

The relationship with the Pearsons occurs because Elizabeth Wingad (nee Proctor) had a sister Mary, who in 1846 married George Pearson. They had a son called Proctor Pearson.

Although Prospect is a large house, it also has attached to it at least one cottage. It is possible the Pearsons lived in one of those as we can, as yet, find no paper record of them living in Prospect House before 1933.

It is possible that they moved either into the cottages, or the main house, to help care for Mary Wingad who lived to be nearly 90. The Pearsons later moved to a house along the west side of Lodge Lane, certainly by the 1970s.

So a few questions have been answered, but a few still remain.

Nettleham Cricket Miserable weather in August gave way to an Indian summer in September as the cricket season drew to an end for another year.

Plenty of activity has taken place during the summer, both on and off the field, starting with the clubs ‘Annual Summer Black Tie Ball’ fund-raising event which was held on Friday 2 July at the Epic Centre on the Lincolnshire Showground. Guests were treated to an excellent Hog Roast by Bowser Brothers, live music by ‘Soul Intention’ and ‘The Disco Doctor’ and were able to enjoy the outside veranda, with views over the showground, on what was to be the hottest day of the year. Thanks also go to ‘Pictures to Treasure’ for their photographs of the evening, all those sponsors who donated raffle prizes and to organiser Christine Brown for making the night such a success.

Sponsors’ Day on Sunday 18 July saw the cricket club invite all those people who had kindly sponsored the club over the past year. Guests were able to watch a Sunday League game against Market Rasen, enjoy an excellent buffet provided by Sarah Strawson, and talk to both players and committee members about how their sponsorship was used by the club.

for 7, in a match which was played very competitively, but in good spirit. Top scorers for City were Chris Sutton 38, and his 2 sons with 33 and 27no, showing that natural sporting ability extends across all sports. Thanks go to Dave Ranshaw for umpiring, and in keeping with the spirit of the game, both teams socialised in the bar afterwards.

Friday 6 August saw the annual Junior Tournament sponsored by WeCanDo Flooring, for U9’s and U10’s take place at Mulsanne Park.

Thankfully the rain kept away, but before the tournament started a surprise was in store for everyone as the ‘Lincs FM Friday Challenge’ with John Marshall took place in the nets. Nettleham’s up and coming young 1st XI star Tom Dalton represented Nettleham Cricket Club in this challenge, which was to see how many balls out of 30 each could hit from the bowling machine.

John Marshall managed 26/30, but Tom proved his class with 29/30, compered by ‘one take’ Colin Woolfson.

On Friday 25 July, a Nettleham cricket team consisting of players from all 4 senior teams entertained a team from Lincoln City Football Club consisting of their backroom staff and captained by their manager Chris Sutton. Blessed by good evening sunshine and in front of plenty of local spectators, Nettleham batted first in this 20 over a side contest, and made 132 for 6, top scorers for Nettleham were Warren Nel 40, Russ Binnington 20 and Tom Dalton 23no.

Club Autumn 2010 Each game in the tournament was 8 overs a side, with each team consisting of 8 players, who all bowled one over and then batted in pairs for 2 overs.

The U9 tournament saw Cleethorpes and Nettleham qualify for the final, both teams having beaten Bracebridge Heath. In an exciting final Nettleham scored 143, beating Cleethorpes who could only manage 130.

The U10’s played in two groups: Group 1, consisting of Cleethorpes A, Nettleham, Sleaford and Upton which was won by Nettleham, who then met the winners of Group 2 consisting of Cleethorpes B, Scothern, Grimsby and Lindum, which was Scothern. A closely fought local derby final was won by Scothern who scored 137 against Nettleham’s 118, coached by James Marshall.

August Bank Holiday, Monday 30 August, saw the annual Family Day when players of all ages and their families could play cricket with a soft plastic ball and bat in a social and fun day.

Four teams of eight players played each other in a round robin under captains Alex Willerton, Phil Brown, Dave Manby and Ben Simpson whose team were the eventual winners.

Friday 10 September saw the Junior presentation night at Mulsanne hosted by Junior Co-ordinator David Lea, who reiterated the excellent junior set-up at Nettleham: Junior training held on Friday nights under head coach Dave Manby, specialist Thursday night training for the senior juniors under overseas player Warren Nel and the ‘Chance to Shine’ programme which sent Nettleham coaches into local junior schools to introduce them to cricket. This set-up had culminated in several players of all ages representing both the County Team and development squad at all age levels.

U9’s Craig Cosgrove, assisted by Martin Strawson, reported that this was his first season as U9 coach, and the emphasis was on enjoyment - getting as many children as possible involved in cricket at this first age group. This was the first time many of the children had played cricket, with every player improving as the season progressed, culminating in winning the Junior Tournament.

Fielding Award: Jack Thornton Batting Award: Ellis Chapman Bowling Award: Matty Ambrose U10’s The U10’s played in the South Division and manager James Marshall reports that after a worrying start, having not been able to raise a team for our first game of the season, we went on to have a very successful season finishing top of the division having played 12, won 11 and lost 1. 13 players all contributed to the success of a really excellent team effort and a very rewarding season.

Deklan Binnington proved to be the outstanding performer, taking 23 wickets and scoring 262 runs in 12 innings with one tremendous score of 45 in his 4-over stint. Deklan took the bowling award.

Cameron Maxwell was awarded the batting award scoring 161 runs in 10 innings averaging 32.2. Jack Kiszka, who had a very good all-round season, received the fielding award.

Henderson Bird, who had never played the game before this season, received an award for the most improved player and notably took 5 wickets in only his second game.

Jordan McCardell received the clubman award for his tremendous enthusiasm which even extended to playing for Washingborough against us in one game!

The team shows great promise which should stand them in very good stead for the Under 11 league in 2011.

U11’s Manager Sue Kennedy thanked all those that had assisted her on the playing side during the season and on match days: Dave Lea, Tim Smith, Craig Cosgrove and Dan McCardell and John Dingley for preparing the pitches for home matches.

Starting with only 6 players from the U10’s season, we welcomed 7 new players in a year that saw the transition from pairs softball to eleven-a-side hard ball.

During the season we played 9 matches, won 4 and lost 5, with one match lost to the weather. There have been many highlights, one of which was the match against Boston. We batted first and got a mere 48 runs, but our bowling clicked as wickets fell to Tom, Harry and Jordan with 2 each, and 3 to Deklan. With their last man in, 3 overs to go and 6 runs needed, the excitement was evident amongst everyone when Jordan stepped up to take the last wicket with 3 runs to spare.

To say the team was ecstatic was an understatement - they ran over to where I was scoring and performed their own version of the Haka!

However, some of the games we lost were close affairs, but our best result was against Bracebridge Heath when, from a position of 45 for 6, we managed to knock 64

up an impressive 137 for 7 in 18 overs, thanks to knocks of 34 by Jacob Hardy and 35 by Nathan Jones. We then bowled BBH all out for 40.

I would like to thank all the parents for supporting the team, John Dingley for preparing the pitch, and the committee for all the support they have given me, particularly David Wheatley.

U15(B) Manager Rachel Simpson reports that this season we had 20 boys signing on for us, which is the most we have had in the team, showing how popular Nettleham Cricket Club is!

The boys trained every Friday evening, weather permitting, and had 8 matches, (including one cup match).

We won just 2 league matches, losing 5 and the cup game to Lindum. However we still had some great performances during the season.

Bowling: Ben Bradford 3-1-3-1, Dan 3-0-51; most wickets in one match: Ben Simpson with 4; most wickets all season: Jack Lawson with 7.

Batting: Ben Bradford: most runs scored over the season with 137; most runs in one match: Ben Simpson 37no. Only person to put runs on the board without being out (all season) was Ryan Lormor .

Fielding improved later on in the season, although disappointing this season generally. I think there have been some good performances and next season we should do really well.

Mid-September saw the end of the cricket season, but just the start of preparation of the cricket square for the winter. Repairing pitch marks, re-seeding worn areas and applying loam and fertiliser to ensure the grass is well protected over the winter months ready for the spring is vital to keep the square up to the required standard.

Thanks go to John Dingley, Dave Ranshaw and David Wheatley for carrying out this essential work.

This preparation was rewarded when the ECB Umpires voted it the best cricket square in the league with a massive 84%.

With scoring based on constancy of bounce, seam movement, turn and carry and bounce, it is nice to receive recognition for their efforts as well as for those involved in raising funds for the relaying of the square over last winter.

Nettleham Gardeners’ Asso With more exhibitors (78 adults and 12 children) and more exhibits (517), this was a record for the Nettleham Gardeners’ Annual Show this year!

Looking back into our archives, in 1998 we had 24 adults and 1 child show a total of 346 exhibits. One group stands out as being very down on numbers compared with 1998 and that is the Wine Classes. Back then we had 77 bottles on the bar, this year we only had 17!

The Children’s Classes attracted a few more entries this year, but the Scothern Nursery’s tomato competition was disappointing. The local nursery had provided all the 220 Junior School children with a Gardener’s Delight tomato plant and we had hoped for large numbers of children bringing along the fruits of their labours, but unfortunately, not one tiny tomato materialised! Once again I would like to thank a member of our Committee for sponsoring the Children’s Classes.

Our Art & Handicrafts Groups featured more entries than ever. We were rather short of space this year, but we have arranged for additional tables next time, so please bring your wonderful handiwork along next year for everyone to admire.

Nettleham Library News EXCITING NEWS! Mike Cavanagh, Network Manager (West) writes: Nettleham library is one of only thirteen libraries across Lincolnshire set to benefit from ICT improvements as part of phase 2 of the Lincolnshire library service library improvement programme.

The library will be replacing its old ‘People’s Network’ computers with new updated internet access computers, which will offer much better functionality. For example, users will, for the first time, be able to use memory sticks, download digital images and much more.

Printing from these computers, as well as general photocopying, will be done by a new ‘all singing, all dancing’ multi-functional device.

Basically, this is a big clever photocopier that can print and copy up to A3 in full colour, as well as black and white.

In addition to the People’s Network and copying improvements, the library will benefit from new self-service technology, making it much quicker and easier to issue, renew and return your books.

Some readers will have already experienced self-service in our other libraries such as Lincoln Central, but for many of you who only use Nettleham library, this will be new. I’d therefore like to reassure you that the technology is very quick and easy to use, and we will always have staff available to help you to feel confident in using it.

If your only experience of self-service is in the supermarkets, or other shops, then prepare to be amazed, because library self-service is streets ahead. One reason for this is because it uses something called radio frequency identification, which means that you don’t need to scan a barcode for the computer to ‘see’ the book you want to borrow. It sounds very ‘techy’, but basically it means you can place a load of books into the machine and it will magically recognise them all almost instantly. You then get the option of a receipt with large easily readable lettering, telling you the return date of your books. That’s it! - the transaction takes only seconds to complete.

Of course, the technology can’t do everything, so we will still need our excellent staff in the library to help you with your enquiries and to manage other aspects of the library. In fact, you should find that you get more quality time with our staff than at the moment, because they will be freed up from issuing and stamping books, giving them more time to help you with your enquiries and book choices.

Technology is all very well and good you might say, but what about new library book stock?

Well, the good news is that in addition to the technological improvements, the library will also benefit from a significant amount of new library stock and a new top-of-shelf signage scheme.

In order to make these improvements we will need to close the library for a period of 2 weeks.

The timetable we are currently working to would see the library probably close in mid-March, opening again at the beginning of April 2011.

It’s possible that this timetable could change a

little, but we will ensure that we give you four weeks’ notice of closure, so that you have plenty of time to stock up on books to keep you going while we improve your library!

As a Nettleham resident myself, I am very much looking forward to these improvements and hope that you are as excited about them as I am, and that you will continue to support your library by making regular use of it.

DID YOU KNOW? Nettleham Library, as with all Lincolnshire Libraries, is set monthly targets to reach. As the figures below show, covering the year to date from April 2010 to end of Sept 2010, we are currently not meeting our targets.

Once we have our new self-service machines in place, why not call and issue and return a few books to yourselves to try out the new equipment?

The following is an article accredited to (and slightly adapted from!) Cherry Willingham Library. We hope you find it useful as an introduction to, or a reminder of, what an excellent community resource your local library service is: ‘In a time of recession we are all looking for ways of saving money and we at Nettleham library want to remind you of the fantastic value for money service that we can offer. Firstly, joining is free and at present requires no proof of identity, so just pop in to join. You can then borrow up to 40 items (generous by even the most avid readers’ standards!) for up to one month, when they require renewal, which can be done in person, online or by telephone.

The supermarkets lure us in with their ‘buy one, get one free’ but remember that in the library it is ‘get one free, get another free’: and another and another and with a simple return policy at the end of the read, there isn’t the dilemma of where to store another supermarket novel that you will never read again. Also what about the adverts for newly issued books that you read about in the glossies? Bring the ad in to us and

we can order the book for you. You’ll join an advanced waiting list of people waiting for the books to be released and, particularly in the case of hard-backs, it will cost you pennies instead of pounds.

Your local library can’t store all the reading material, talking books and DVD’s to satisfy all the tastes of all the people, but with the media you require on the shelves in other Lincolnshire libraries, it’s not usually a long wait for the book of your choice to arrive. If you want a telephone call when your book is in, then it will cost you 50p, whilst for email or text notification it is 25p, payable when you collect your book. You might even find a book or two to tide you over whilst you await your request: our borrower recommended shelves, displays and returns trolleys are very popular. Books can be returned to any Lincolnshire library, so if you holiday in or travel around Lincolnshire just choose your reading material from us and return it to the library in your destination venue. If a library is closed, just post the books though the door and they will be dealt with when it next opens.

‘But you are never open’ we hear you cry! If you really can’t get to see us on a Tuesday 10.00am 1.00pm, Wednesday 2.00pm - 7.00pm, Friday 2.00pm - 7.00pm, and Sat 10.00am - 1.00pm, then may we remind you that the library service continues to be accessible on line 24/7 at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries where books can be renewed, requested and their status checked. Alternatively you can call the customer service number on 01522 782010 for any of the the above services. Don’t forget that the mobile van also visits Nettleham every Thursday 2.00pm - 5.00pm giving you access to even more books. Please do pay them a visit or several!

And forget that fuddy-duddy image and the need for silence. Come to the library for a chat with friends and with the staff! Use your mobile whilst you surf the net on one of our four free-to-use computers, but remember to book as they can get quite busy. We also sell educational posters for your child’s bedroom wall and books of stamps. We offer photocopying facilities, a daily copy of the Echo for browsing, and have a range of second-hand non-fiction and fiction books for sale at low prices. Our entrance foyer displays events and services offered by Lincolnshire County Council, whilst on the study table is our Community File promoting local events.

AND FINALLY We have always encouraged local children to visit the library and regularly put on storytimes, competitions, colouring, a summer reading challenge and other occasional events. Despite this, we have seen numbers of junior users decline over recent years, so we are really delighted that Nettleham Infant School will be visiting the library most Tuesday mornings (two classes per week) from November to borrow books. As our next generation of library users, we hope that they really enjoy their visits to the library and discover the delights of untold stories. We look forward to seeing them.

A hot spell during the first week was followed by another lasting from the 21st to the end of the month. There was also some changeable, unsettled weather and it was rather cool around the 19th.

It was mostly warm throughout the month, with only three days when temperatures failed to reach 20°C. Just over 29°C was reached on the 10th (Nettleham Carnival Day) and temperatures over 25°C occurred on six days.

The wettest weather was on the 1st, and from the 5th to the 10th, but on only two days after this - the 13th and 28th.

Rain occurred on 22 days, but there were only 10 days with any substantial amounts.

There were some noteworthy thunder events.

After a hot 5th, severe storms occurred with torrential rain at times, producing the highest daily total of the month of 38.5mm. The 8th was wet, with spells of heavy rain and some thunder. More intense thunder and lightning took the power off briefly late on the 13th.

Another thunderstorm occurred on the 29th.

There was also plenty of settled weather with hot sunshine. 27°C was reached three times during the month. There was some breezy weather at times.
