I do hope you keep them coming, to maintain a lively and interesting magazine Talking Nettleham News For many years now, every edition of our village magazine has been produced as an audiotape: “Talking Nettleham News” and circulated amongst a number of visually impaired residents in the village. It remains a much-appreciated service today.

The creation of the audiotapes has been done for several years by Janice Clayton, one of our village Parish Councillors, but due to other commitments, this task will continue with the kind assistance of a new reader (see page 17). Thank you Janice for all the years you performed this service.

If you are (or know) someone in Nettleham who is visually impaired and would like to use this service, please contact the Editor.

Warning to Parents!

It has been reported that a number of syringes, with needles still attached, have been discovered by children playing in the Beck near Washdyke Lane!

For many generations the Beck has provided a natural amenity for village children to enjoy paddling, fishing, sailing boats, etc, but in recent years it has become sensible to wear footwear, because of the broken glass which has been so carelessly and thoughtlessly thrown into the water.

But this latest discovery is a very sad and alarming development of which parents should be aware and now insist that their children wear some kind of protective footwear when playing in the Beck.

Village Scrapbook Nettleham Heritage Association is endeavouring to create a ‘village scrapbook’ for Nettleham and is seeking as many people as possible to become involved and contribute something to its content.

Nettleham Handbook and Directory In this edition of our village magazine, you will find there is a 12-page pull-out section in the centre, containing much of the information which previously appeared in the Nettleham Now village directory, last published in the spring of 2009.

The Green has been photographed from exactly the same viewpoint on the 10th day of every month this year. These pictures, together with all the “scraps” of life in Nettleham in 2010, will create a snapshot of village life today for future generations.

Since over a year has elapsed since this information was last updated, it will, in all probability, contain a number of inaccuracies. So do please check the entry for your group and let me know of any changes. Corrections will be included in the next (winter) edition of Nettleham News.

The final photograph will be taken on The Green at 10 minutes, 10 seconds past 10 o’clock on the 10th day of the 10th month 2010, so if you want to be included in this photograph, be there at 10.00am at the very latest on Sunday 10 October.

It is anticipated that this village guide will continue to be included annually within the autumn edition of this magazine, so do please inform the Editor of any changes in content, well before the deadline of 1 August every year.

This ambitious initative by the Nettleham Heritage Association, aspires to include every conceivable aspect of everyday life in our village and the resulting volume will go into the Lincolnshire Archives for the edification and interest of future students and researchers.

Lincoln Rugby Club On the evening of Wednesday 28 July 2010, the application for planning permission to develop a site on Lodge Lane for the use of Lincoln Rugby Club was granted by West Lindsey District Council.

Whether or not you agree with this development in the village, it will now go ahead in the coming months and its full impact on the village remains to be seen in the future (see pages 49/50/51 for more information).

It is important now that LRFC honour their intent to include a skateboard facility for village youngsters within the development of this site off Lodge Lane.

The Next Edition It is anticipated that with the next winter edition of the magazine you will receive a copy of the Nettleham Design Statment.

This publication will provide planners, developers and individual property owners with guidance on the parameters for any new developments, large or small, within the village in the future.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the distributors of the magazine for their assistance in delivering a number of village publications, in addition to Nettleham News, during 2010.

Once again, the year has flown past and the winter edition of the magazine is not far away. This is, of course, the Christmas edition as well, so do let’s have lots of contributions for the magazine from readers, especially on a festive theme, to create a really bumper Christmas edition.

Parish Council News News from the Parish Council Here is the quarterly report from Nettleham Parish Council. If you would like more information on any of the items here, or would like us to cover specific items in future editions, the contact details appear alongside.

Dog Fouling and Litter There has been a significant increase in reports to the Parish Office of dog fouling in the village. This has been particularly prevalent in Vicar’s Wood and the footpath off Cherry Tree Lane. We have asked West Lindsey District Council to undertake patrols by their Street Force Wardens in an effort to identify the culprits.

However, we cannot achieve success with this problem without assistance. It seems perfectly reasonable that anyone seen allowing their dog to foul a public area should be reported, either to the Parish or District Council, to face possible prosecution and we would be very grateful for the assistance of the general public.

The (mainly anonymous) correspondents, both direct and indirect, who have accused the Council of being anti-dog, have clearly not experienced the situation in Vicar’s Wood and on the Cherry Tree Lane footpath - just two of the locations where the problem has been particularly prevalent in recent months.

Litter has also increased, both on Bill Bailey’s and Mulsanne Park. User clubs at the park have been requested to be more vigilant when holding matches and events there. The Council has increased its litter picking frequency at Bill Bailey’s, but would also appreciate it if parents encourage children of all ages to keep the park tidy and to use the litter bins provided.

In July the Council was pleased to be in a position to install a new roundabout (known as the Sputnik) in the play area at Bill Bailey’s. This was formally declared open by Joseph Shaw, the youngster who originally suggested to the Council that this would be a useful attraction to younger people. The event attracted a small amount of coverage in the local press and a photograph appears on the front cover of this edition of the magazine.

Over the summer period, and possibly before publication of this Nettleham News, the play area at Bill Bailey’s will be fenced.

This has been made possible by a significant grant obtained by the Council from the Star Energy Community Fund.

Mobile Library Parish Office Open Monday - Friday 9.00am - 12.30pm

However the Tennis Club has kindly offered to collect public payments and pass them to the Council, so members of the public should be aware that they could be approached by a Tennis Club member enquiring if the fee has been paid. Please let the Parish Office know if any problems are encountered.

In an attempt to reduce the incidents of nuisance and vandalism at Mulsanne Park the Parish Council has introduced security patrols comprising a security officer and dog. These patrols are more likely to be during the hours covered by the dusk to dawn curfew. Users of the park can be assured that during normal park opening hours the dog will always be on a leash.

In September, the three main tennis courts at Mulsanne Park will be re-surfaced.

This has been made possible as a result of the Tennis Club successfully obtaining significant funding from the Longdales Trust. The Tennis Club and the Parish Council (which owns the land) will contribute the remainder of the costs.

Although the tennis season is coming to an end, and the three courts mentioned will be out of action whilst being resurfaced, it is worth reminding readers that all 5 courts are available for public use when not being used by the Tennis Club. There is a £5 fee per session, which should normally be paid at the Parish office during opening hours, or put through the office door.

Bill Bailey’s Playing Field

The Council has been informed by Lincolnshire County Council that they are reviewing the performance of Mobile Library stops in rural areas and, from April 2011, will be withdrawing those stops which do not achieve an average of three customers per half hour.

The average number of customers over a 16-month period at the Scothern Road layby stop is two, and there is therefore a the probability that this stop will be discontinued if numbers do not increase.

Being relatively close to the library, the Parish Council consider that a more distant location for a stop would perhaps be of more benefit to residents.

The Parish Council is anxious that all possible rural services such as this should be encouraged and continued, and potential users are encouraged to utilise the service in the coming months, as LCC have indicated that with an improvement in numbers, the potential withdrawal of this service will be reviewed.

Lindum Rugby Club Proposals This matter was considered by the West Lindsey District Council Planning Committee on 28 July 2010, when planning permission was granted.

The Parish Council and the LCC Highways Department objected to this application.

The security company has also been asked to check on other Parish Council property in the village from time to time, including Bill Bailey’s and the Old School.

The Bishops’ Palace Site At the time of going to press, the Council is on the verge of agreeing a 14-year lease of the Bishops’ Palace site. Cllr John Evans and the Village Plan Committee are currently compiling an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund, in an attempt to obtain funding to undertake some work on the site.

The plan is to establish a working group to include the Junior School, Nettleham Heritage Association and other community groups, with the intention of opening up the area for the public to walk through, to establish wild-life havens by selective mowing and to protect the site by fencing those boundaries which are not already secure.

Councillors’ Monthly Surgeries The Council’s 3-month trial of monthly ‘surgeries’ ended in June. Response to this trial was very minimal, two of the three 90-minute sessions attracted no members of the public. Accordingly, the Council has decided not to continue this particular forum. The opportunity continues to be available to contact the Council by all the means detailed at the head of this article.

Planning: The Role of the Parish Council The Parish Office has seen an increase in visits over the last 3 months from residents wishing to examine, or comment on, planning applications, or make enquiries about the planning system. This brief note is an attempt to explain where the Parish Council fits into the planning process.

The Council is what is called a Statutory Consultee. This means that West Lindsey District Council (WLDC), who are the Planning Authority, send a copy of all applications for Planning Permission (PP) within the parish to the Parish Council for comment. The applications are then scrutinised by five Parish Councillors (the Planning Committee) who each comment on it.

The comments are then summarised and reported to the full Council. The Council’s options at this stage are to object, to make comments on ‘likes/dislikes’, to make suggestions for amendments, or to simply make no comment. In the case of major development proposals, the Council may hold a public, or special, meeting to gauge opinion, before responding to WLDC. The Council’s scope for objecting is fairly limited, and is constrained to aspects relating to planning law (although the Council does not claim to be an expert in this complex subject).

Several residents have felt that the Parish Council should play a greater role in supporting their objections to a specific development, which may only affect their property. The Council can only look at planning applications from a planning viewpoint; aspects specific to a potentially affected individual, or property, have to be taken up directly with the planning authority (WLDC) by that person.

Whilst the Clerk of the Council plays a key role in the administration of this process, there are very few occasions where a categorical answer may be given to the many questions which we receive on planning law. These can only be addressed by officers at WLDC.

Best Kept Village At the time of writing this report, the Council had been informed that Nettleham had moved into the final stage of the competition, which would be judged during the month of August.

Old School Car Park In the winter edition of Nettleham News, we reported that for a number of reasons the Council had agreed that it was not possible to extend the use of the Old School car park for the dropping-off and collection of school children. Unfortunately this decision seems not to have reached all parents, and the Council must draw to everyone’s attention to the fact that the car park is solely for the use of those hiring the hall, or visiting the Parish Council office.

It appears that a misleading statement has been issued by persons unknown, suggesting that the car park is village property and can be used as an overflow car park for the school. (This information has not originated from the school). The Council must emphasise that this is not the case - the Co-op have kindly agreed that their car park can be used for a ‘Park and Stride’ scheme and is no less convenient for parents.

Noticeboards We have provided additional noticeboards at the Co-op to enable events to be listed as ‘Regular’, ‘Current’ and ‘Upcoming’.

Flood Risk Management West Lindsey District Council has made some recent developments in Flood Risk Management and will be producing a West Lindsey Flood Risk Management Strategy.

As part of this Strategy the Parish Council has been requested to raise awareness of the rights and responsibilities attached to riparian ownership of watercourses.

Book Bank Residents of Nettleham and surrounding villages are now able to recycle books, videos, audio-tapes, CDs, DVDs and pc/video games in the Book Bank located in the car park at the rear of the Nettleham Co-operative Store on The Green.

Benches in the Village During the Council’s annual maintenance of village seats, we have noticed that one or two will soon need replacing, indeed the one outside the Methodist Church is no longer safe to use. This will probably be repaired temporarily, but any offers of donations of seats for either this location, or other locations around the village, would be gratefully received and considered by the Property Committee.

NETTLEHAM LADIES CLUB SPRING FAYRE 8 MAY 2010 Where was the sunny weather we had been used to when we held our Spring Fayres in previous years? Would all that rain put people off coming? What a sigh of relief when we saw all those lovely people coming along to support us once again.

There were lots of stalls offering many bargains and we are extremely pleased to say that we raised the grand total of £1,500 which we will be donating to the Alzheimer’s Society.

We would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who helped to run the stalls, including all the men-folk who helped with the heavy lifting.

Also a big thank you to all those who donated raffle prizes, including local businesses and the local supermarkets, and of course to everyone who came along to support us on the day.

You can help to reduce this waste by following the Environment Agency’s advice: ● Before purchasing an item, think about if you really need a new one could your existing equipment be upgraded, or could you purchase a refurbished product instead? ● If you have a product you no longer use, think about passing it on to someone else.

So what should you do when you need to dispose of WEEE? ● Some retailers operate schemes where they will take your old item if you are replacing it with a new one like-for-like. For example, if you are buying a new kettle, they will take your old one. Ask your retailer if they are part of such a scheme. ● If you are having an item delivered, ask your retailer when arranging this if they will take back the old equipment at the same time.

Retailers are only allowed to charge for collecting WEEE, not treating it. ● Old appliances can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Contact your council to find out what your nearest site accepts and what it doesn’t. ● Ask your local council to collect your waste electrical equipment for you.

They must collect it (but there may be a charge).

Police News There have not been any more reported burglaries at the time of writing this, however it does not hurt to always be security and community minded.

Nettleham does remain a peaceful village with a relatively low crime rate and the recent spate of burglaries do not reflect the hard work put in by your Neighbourhood Policing Team.

If you know a friend or neighbour is away, or a property is unoccupied, please keep an eye on it. If you see any signs that would make it obvious to a burglar that someone is away, please take any necessary steps to alter this, for example, removing post or papers from the letterbox, or pushing them through completely, removing any garden tools or ladders from view that could be used to gain entry. If you have two cars and the neighbour’s driveway is empty, leave one of yours on it, put your neighbour’s bins out when you do your own. These are a few simple steps that can be taken to make your home less vulnerable, in addition to the usual locking of doors and windows.

I would also like to draw another issue to everyone’s attention. We continue to receive complaints in relation to parking.

This continues around the two schools and also includes Washdyke Lane near to the junction of Greetwell Lane, Mill Hill and Vicarage Lane to name but a few. Please when you park ask yourself a few simple questions. Am I blocking an entrance?

Am I parked too far on the pavement?

Am I preventing pedestrians, wheelchairs or pushchairs from getting through and what about a visually impaired person with a guide dog? Are vehicles able to get past easily, could emergency services or buses get past my parked vehicle? Are there any road markings letting me know that parking is not allowed? If you are happy that you have considered all these thoughts, then the chances are you have parked considerately. It is very difficult to try and tackle ‘real crime’, as we often get told, when the steady stream of complaints for parking takes up a lot of time.

If you are due to go away, please consider letting your neighbours know and consider leaving a contact number with them or the police. Don’t leave items laying about the garden, use a timer device to switch on one or two lights around the house and ensure you cancel, papers, milk, etc. If you have more than one vehicle leave one on the drive - anything you can do to make it look like someone is at home.

Letters from Readers Nettleham Carnival 2010 I would like to congratulate everyone involved in organising the Nettleham Carnival, once again, in 2010. More people than ever seemed to be there this year, as the weather was perfect. A huge success!

It would be interesting to see a number of Nettleham police talking about keeping our village safe from mindless vandalism, or perhaps advice to youngsters who may considering joining the police service in the future.

For next year, could music from the 1940’s be considered? I’m sure a lot of toe-tapping pensioners would be very happy!

Yes, the Carnival on Saturday 10 July 2010 was a great success. I was there as usual watching all the goings-on from my perch in the tree-tops! I must say I agree with Norma about the volume of the music it nearly shook me out of the tree!

A very big thank you must go to all those people who so willingly and gladly give of their time to ensure that this popular annual village event takes place every year.

Once again, we were very fortunate with the weather a real scorcher!

Alf Frith Long-Service Presentation During the course of the Parish Council meeting at Mulsanne Park pavillion on Wednesday 14 July 2010, Alf Frith received a presentation on behalf of the Council in recognition of his many years of service to the village as a Parish Councillor.

Personal contributions from members of the Council were used to purchase a number of gardening implements and vouchers, a pastime which both Alf and Margaret enjoy together.

Alf, who has lived in the village for over 78 years, served a total of 46 years as a member of Nettleham Parish Council, of which 23 were as Chairman.

Standing down as a Parish Councillor at the local elections earlier this year, Alf nevertheless was re-elected as one of the village’s two representatives on West Lindsey District Council, again a role in which he has faithfully served his community for many years.

Councillor Malcolm Leaning, himself a member of the Council for many years, paid tribute to Alf’s long service.

On behalf of the residents of Nettleham, I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to Alf for the conscientious and enthusiastic work he has done for the village over the years, ensuring that Nettleham continues to be a pleasant, safe and attractive place in which to live in the twenty-first century.

New ‘Sputnik’ Play Area Ride Nettleham Parish Council owns and manages three play areas within the village and has been conscious for some time that no new play equipment had been installed at any of the sites.

IN MEMORIAM Vivienne Burton Cooke 1929 - 2010

Last September the Council received an approach from a youngster in the village who suggested that a small roundabout (called a ‘Sputnik’) would be a useful addition to the children’s play area at Bill Bailey’s playing field.

After consideration by the Property Committee and the full Parish Council, funds were allocated in the 2010/11 budget for the equipment, which has now been installed at a total cost of £4,800 (see front cover photograph).

Watched by his classmates, Joseph Shaw, the youngster who made the original suggestion, formally opened the new ride on Thursday 15 July by cutting the special ribbon. Nettleham Infant School has been very supportive and agreed that the whole class could attend this event.

The ceremony was also attended by the Chairman of the Property Committee and other Parish Councillors.

Introducing the New Voice of the “Talking Nettleham News” My name is Jaime Carr and I am currently a pupil in year 11 at Lincoln Minster School.

In September 2009, I began my Duke of Edinburgh Award by learning key skills for my expedition, from map-reading to setting up tents. The final expedition took place on the second-to-last weekend in June and, for some reason, I was the only girl on the expedition, with 13 boys!

There were two groups, each with seven members, and a route for each team was planned by its members.

The walk was extremely challenging, but with strong teamwork we all managed to successfully complete it.

However, we did encounter a few problems: an hour into the walk we entered a field full of cows and half the group ended up having to run to the other side of the field whilst being chased by a

large number of them, whilst the other half of the group had to jump over a barbed-wire fence to escape the animals looking back it was a funny experience, but at the time it was terrifying!

The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award is open to all 14 year olds and above and entails 4 sections - an expedition, where I walked over 30km during two days, camped for one night and had to cook my own meals; volunteering for an hour a week for three months; undertaking a new skill and practicing this skill for an hour a week (also for three months); and performing a physical activity for an hour a week for six months.

I’m really excited about undertaking the role as the ‘voice’ of the Talking Nettleham News and look forward to starting!

Eric and all of Viv’s and my family want our friends to know how very much we appreciate the many cards, letters, prayer, support and love you have given us. It is helping us to accept the initial shock and space left by dear Viv’s sudden, quite unexpected, passing. It all happened while she was happily gardening one sunny afternoon.

A friend has written so beautifully about our dear Viv: “I have such happy memories of Viv’s warmth, kindness, gentleness and zest for life. As soon as I met her, it was almost like meeting an old friend.

She had that wonderful art of creating an immediate bond of friendship.”

Perhaps she too is preparing a place for us in the full presence of our risen Lord Jesus.

Maud Knott Celebrates her 90th Birthday!

Even at this great age she is full of enthusiasm and determination in everything she does. Last year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through the treatment with the help of family and friends and seems to be mending nicely. This year she had a fall and broke her ankle. As you can imagine, this was immensely painful and entailed a number of visits and stays in hospital. When she was finally discharged she was heard to say that these last few months had really weakened her legs and she needs to get walking again, so is going to ask the management if she can have an exercise bike to get her legs and feet going again!

Maud Knott returned to the village on Saturday 5 June 2010 to celebrate her ninetieth birthday with family and friends in the Old School. This alone brought back memories for some of her guests, as this was the first school they had attended all those years ago.

Maud was born in Nettleham and continued to live here until, through ill-health, she had to move into a residential home on Ermine Estate, Lincoln.

As a teenager, as was typical in those days , she went into service at the Vicar’s Court near the cathedral and then moved to the Manor House at Sudbrooke, where she was to meet her future sister-in-law. She rose to be the cook and reminisces about cooking banquets on an open fire range concentrating on seasonal fare, with little refrigeration.

It was at this time she met and eventually married Joe Knott and began married life living in a stone cottage on The Crescent.

Her three children, Jean, David and Wendy were all born whilst living there. Joe, who had served in the Army before the war, volunteered again during the war and it was during those long, dark, lonely days and nights she honed her sewing and knitting skills. She was already a good cook and with food being in short supply, made the most of what she could get with soups and stews.

Meal times were supplemented with hedgerow jams, home-made cakes, chutneys and pickles. She even had a dabble at making wine from pears, elderberries, marrows and rhubarb, not forgetting the ginger beer, bottles of which were known to explode on more than one occasion! Every Christmas there would be several visitors calling to collect the fruit cakes she had baked earlier in the year to allow them to mature before being eaten.

She was an enthusiastic member of the WI group, always game to learn new crafts and become very good at them. These included embroidery, smocking, lampshades, quilted eiderdowns, leather gloves, pulled thread work and hassocks for the church. A smocked baby dress even made it to the national championships. One Christmas a lot of relatives received wicker-work baskets and trays of varying sizes and descriptions. Many of these items would be given as gifts, or prizes for raffles, often to be followed up by requests for more for other people. She fitted all of these activities into her daily life as well as working full-time and raising the family.

Going back to her cooking skills and being a proud parent, she started to work in the village school canteen, where she would have the same holidays as her children, so could keep an eye on them.

The annual Nettleham Show was a busy time in her life and she entered many of the categories and received some memorable surprises in one or two classes she didn’t expect to do any good in, but winning others, especially for her cookery and sewing skills.

As her children became more independent, an opening arose at Linelands Care Home.

Her caring side came to the fore again and she transferred there to work as a carer.

However just doing the job was never enough for Maud and as time went on she sewed new curtains for some of the rooms. Many years later, Joe had a short respite stay in Linelands and whilst visiting Maud remarked: “Cor blimey, I ran those curtains up - it must have been good stuff”.

In 1997 Maud and Joe were offered a retirement bungalow on All Saints Lane. This really suited Maud as the place was a lot smaller, took less time to clean and gave her more time to learn even more skills including calligraphy, flower arranging and tracing her family tree. Attending these classes was also a way to keep in touch with old friends and, of course, make new ones.

Time marches on though, waits for no one, and she lost Joe. At this time her own health started to be a concern and after a couple of heart attacks, mini-strokes and several falls, she declared herself unfit to be alone and was fortunate to secure a place in the excellent Ermine House - a small room at the back to start with, but eventually a larger room over looking the patio decking and bird table. The first Christmas in the residential home, she crocheted knee blankets for all the ladies who shared her lounge. The events and therapy organisers soon realised that if they suggested any handicraft exercise, then the first one to volunteer was Maud. She started painting and had some of her Christmas card designs put forward into the national Order of St Johns Care Trust competition. She won outright one year and was the Lincolnshire winner on another occasion.

Over the years she has always been mindful of people who are less well off than her and has knitted and sewed dolls, Paddington bears, blankets and other items that you can either sell to raise money, give to a child as a present, or keep one warm. She also crochets like the wind - you only have to mention that you know someone who is pregnant and she’s off on a mission to get another christening shawl completed, although she does admit she is starting to slow down on these recently. Her latest venture is making small blankets for the premature baby unit at Lincoln Maternity Hospital.

Maud’s generosity also extended to her 90th birthday, as she stated on her invitations: “No presents please, but there will be an opportunity to give money to Macmillan Nurses”. The party was an outstanding success with over 60 guests from far and wide enjoying a chat and buffet lunch. Maud was exhausted by 3.00pm and returned to Ermine House tired, but with the knowledge that she had raised over £200 for this wonderful charity!

Her younger sister Lucy wrote a poem especially for the occasion:

“Maud” For ninety years you’ve been on earth, Shown us all what you are worth, Went from kitchen-maid to cook, Had your recipes printed in a book.

Taught yourself to knit and sew, Before you fell in love with Joe. Jean, David and Wendy shared his name Then Peter, Sara, Lee, Dawn Jon and Nick came.

Sam, Joe, George and Henry followed on, And baby Patrick is the latest one.

You’ve made baby shawls by the score And how many knee-rugs - I’m not sure.

Calligraphy you leant to write, Your paintings are a lovely sight, You’ve always been a busy lass, Congratulations Maud and God bless.

Letters from Readers From Watford I have read many articles of interest to me in the summer edition of Nettleham News, but sadly I have not found one that prompts me to put pen to paper! Am I running out of steam, I ask myself, or just getting older?

I was going to visit your lovely village again in June, but sadly fate stepped in and spoilt my plans (the best laid plans of mice and men, etc!), maybe next year...

I thought the cover picture on the summer edition was spectacular! How beautiful flowers are and the colours of the petals so vibrant. I was wondering if you took that photograph, as I remember a Horse Chestnut tree on one spring edition which you had taken - that was spectacular too.

It was taken last autumn at the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Annual Show in the village hall in September - always a riot of colour with a wide range of exhibits including stunning flowers, fruits and vegetables. A report about this year’s show should appear in the next (winter) edition of the magazine in December.

The Cinnamon Trust Having just read the latest edition of Nettleham News, I wonder if any of your readers may be interested in the work of the Cinnamon Trust.

Since moving to Nettleham a few months ago, I have noticed the high number of older people with dogs, who I see around the village.

The Cinnamon Trust is a national charity operating for the purpose of supporting elderly people to keep their pets at home as long as possible, recognising the huge benefits (companionship, purpose, exercise, etc). The Trust is based in Cornwall, but works through thousands of volunteers around the country (of which I am one).

The Cinnamon Trust can help by: ●

finding a volunteer to help with animals in the home - walking the dog, taking a cat to the vet, cleaning out a rabbit, etc

●

providing temporary foster-care for a pet whilst an elderly person is ill/in hospital

●

once registered, the Trust will promise to permanently look after an animal (either in foster-care, or at their sanctuary in Cornwall) if an elderly person can no longer cope with their pet.

They are always seeking volunteers and foster-homes, so, for an older person who would like an animal, they could become foster-carers, as the Trust will support them/cover vet bills. It could mean that someone who wants an animal, but feels they are unable to because of their age, can do so with the support of the Trust.

Police Numbers As both a local resident and Deputy Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, I would like to respond to the comments of your readers Harry Carter and Bob Groves in relation to police numbers and front line posts.

Let’s put the record straight. As we enter the new financial year April 2010, Lincolnshire Police currently has 1,197 police officer posts. We have 149 Police Community Support Officers. We have 994 full-time equivalent members of police staff.

Over the past two years we have worked hard to transfer officer posts back to the front line into public contact roles. As a consequence we have a very low level of police officers in back office roles, usually where special powers or skills are needed.

We have worked hard to squeeze our budget and transfer every pound we can into new police officers. As a consequence there will be an additional twenty-two brand new cops on the streets of the county over the year ahead. That’s at a time when many forces are reducing numbers. Those officers need the support of highly skilled police staff, running the control room, scouring crime scenes for DNA/fingerprints and operating the intelligence computer systems tracking criminal activity. And, we have some of the very best in the country.

Getting the balance right, so that we can have as many officers and PCSOs working on the street has meant increasing the numbers of police staff over the years.

It represents better value for Lincolnshire communities to have bobbies on the beat, rather than working in a role that can be more expertly and cost-effectively done by a skilled member of police staff. We believe that the balance is now about right, but we keep looking hard to see where we can squeeze even more value and effectiveness out of the back office and into the front line. The community can be reassured that over the year ahead we will all be working to deliver the very best service we can, building on this year’s successes, continuing to reduce crime, solving more of the crimes that do take place and protecting the public we serve.

So my plea to your readers is to judge us on our results, on the quality of service we give to you and not an anecdote, however tempting that may be.

Letters from Readers From Southport Now that Kathleen and I are reasonably well settled into our new home in Southport and most of the boxes and tea chests are unpacked, the garage is almost clear and I can nearly get the car in, the typewriter has been unearthed and so I thought: ‘Let’s see if I can still use the thing!’

Happily, I can - so we can let you and all those lovely, wonderful friends we left in Nettleham know how we are, and to say a really sincere and heartfelt ‘Thank You’ for all the cards and letters we received wishing us well in our new surroundings.

There were so many that it really would have been too difficult to reply to each one individually. We hope that this epistle will go some small way to express our thanks and to assure you all of our gratitude and love.

It is very humbling to realize just how much, and how so many, people thought so lovingly and kindly about Kathleen and myself. We do miss you all, and although neighbours and Church people are friendly and welcoming and its good to be near Stephen and David, we are still a bit homesick, I suppose. Happily quite a few Nettleham friends and family members have been able to visit us here and we are looking forward to being able to have a couple of weeks holiday in Lincolnshire later in the year and see some of you.

We do enjoy receiving and reading Nettleham News magazine, the last two reproductions of the ‘Nettleham Church Story’ were especially interesting, and, of course, reading about the organisations, events and happenings in and around the village.

Our Church-going is rather different here the nearest church, just across the road from us, is dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and only thirteen years old. It is shared by the Methodists and the C of E. Sometimes we go a little further, to St Philips and

St Pauls - again this is shared with the Methodist church. Still further, there is the lovely church of St John at Ainsdale. All are very warm, welcoming churches and friendly folks. Our free bus and rail travel tickets allow us to go by train to Liverpool, so we have even been to one service there.

Now perhaps you see what I mean by different Church-going?

As I said earlier, we are fortunate to be nearer two of the boys. Boys! They are grown men really, with their own business!

We see them and have the joy of family meals together two or three times a week.

Another blessing is that, because we only have a walk-in shower here (Kathleen cannot get into a bath) I go there whenever I want a bath. I do love to lay and soak - I just ring the boys and say: “Turn on the taps”. They are only ten minutes away and I arrive in time to walk straight upstairs and into the bath... after getting undressed, of course!

Now more thanks are due for all the garden and shopping tokens, along with money given to us as ‘leaving presents’.

Some garden tokens went towards a small, plastic “grow house” which currently has two flourishing tomato plants. With other money and tokens we bought a small bookcase and two bedside lamps for the spare bedroom.

Kathleen had to be in hospital for a week just after Christmas and is now much, much better. A worrying and painful time is now a distant memory.

The memory of our time in Nettleham, and the memories of such lovely friends will always be fresh in our thoughts. Even the sound of the Red Arrows practising is not forgotten - the noise of the seagulls is no compensation for that sound and sight!

Our continuing thanks and blessings for all you have meant, and still mean, to us.

My mother has lived in the village for many years and has enjoyed its peace and tranquillity. She is 88 years old and is very frail after suffering several falls, a heart attack and breathing difficulties. She lost her husband recently after 64 years of marriage and is now alone.

Nevertheless, she has coped with fortitude until recently, when someone decided it would be a good idea to regularly disturb her sleep by banging on her doors and windows in the middle of the night. It started with the front door, then the back door and now they are trespassing into the back garden to bang on her bedroom window. As none of her neighbours has encountered similar problems, she feels that she is being specifically targeted, which is causing her great anxiety.

The incidents have been reported to the police who have, without any evidence, assumed it is being done by children (ie persons up to the age of 17).

The officer stated: “Even if we catch them, there is nothing we can do but tell their parents”. Just how far does this harassment have to escalate before they take an interest? What message is this sending to the perpetrators? So much for the strategic aims of ‘Policing with PRIDE’.

I have stayed with her some nights and occasionally patrol the area myself (interestingly I have never encountered a police car), but I would, of course, get into a lot of trouble if I took any action against them personally.

The police seem to have their hands tied and the politicians show no interest in untying them. They are all full of statistics and waffle and no one cares for the individual. So what is the solution?

I am sure that whoever is doing this regards it as a harmless prank, but it is, in fact, putting my mother’s mental and physical health seriously at risk. It could cause her to have another heart attack and therefore is life-threatening. I don’t know what satisfaction they get from doing it, but they will certainly not earn any respect for frightening a helpless old lady.

I just hope that the person responsible will read this letter, see the error of their ways and the potential consequences, and I implore them to stop doing it now.

That is all I can do without support from those in authority, which is sad and pathetic. How would you feel if it was your mother?

Nettleham Heritage Association Village Scrapbook: a snapshot of the village in the year 2010 7) Records of as many of the village clubs, special interest groups and other organisations as possible in the month of October, nearest to 10.10.10, if possible including a photograph.

I envisage this being a short description of your club, its aims, the number of members and a record of your October meeting.

During 2010, Nettleham Heritage Association would like to compile a Village Scrapbook.

At the moment Pearl Wheatley and I are working on the initial plan, but we do need lots of help.

We are focussing on the number ten, culminating in an event at 10.10am on the 10 October 2010 (10.10.10), but more of that later.

We envisage the following sections: 1) Main news stories for the week beginning 10.10.10 (mostly national, unless something big happens internationally). This date is a Sunday, so we are following the convention of the week beginning on the Sunday.

2) A cross-section of everyday goods for sale, together with their prices.

The Lincoln Target supplements would give us a start.

3) Any village news that week, eg church, chapel and Threshold newsletters, births, deaths and marriages, and other village events not covered elsewhere.

4) A photograph of the village green on the tenth day of each month from January to September 2010. The Editor, Nigel Kingston, has been taking these throughout the year.

5) Village photograph - as many of you as can come - on the Green at 10.10am on 10.10.10. Nigel will be there with a camera to record the event.

6) Records of lessons taught and any special events from the two village schools for week beginning 10.10.10.

This is to just be a general record of subjects being taught that week, not a list of children involved.

So please, Pearl and I can’t do this alone, we need lots of help. The finished book will be on display in the library for a few months and then hopefully will go to the Lincolnshire Archives and remain there as a permanent snapshot of village life in 2010.

Please help us by supplying details of your organisation. We will contact you during September, but if, by the end of September, we have not contacted you, please get in touch with me. We are doing our best not to omit anyone, but it is quite possible we could miss someone.

Appointment system We constantly review and monitor our appointment system to try and find the best ‘fit’ for everyone. We acknowledge that it has not been easy for patients recently to make a routine appointment and we apologise for this.

We have now introduced a new system for patients wishing to be seen on the same day with an acute problem. Anyone who telephones the surgery to request a same day appointment will be given the opportunity to come to the practice at 11:20am to a ‘sit and wait’ clinic. All of these patients will be seen by a GP that

morning. To avoid long waits these appointments are strictly for single new problems which cannot wait until another day.

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening programme for people aged between 60 and 69 was launched by NHS Lincolnshire at the end of December 2009. This means that over the next two years everyone in the county in this age bracket will be given the opportunity to undergo bowel cancer screening.

Report from the Voluntary Drivers Scheme The voluntary driver’s scheme is continually growing and gaining support from local people.

Those people that wish to take part will be sent an easy-to-use testing kit directly to their homes, which they then post back to a laboratory for testing. Anyone who has an abnormal test result will be given an appointment to see a specialist nurse in the endoscopy units at one of the local hospitals, to discuss further tests.

We have recently been able to make changes to our fee scale, which have been most appreciated by patients who use the scheme regularly.

Ever wondered what is on your magnetic key card?

Answer: 1. Customer’s name 2. Customer’s partial home address 3. Hotel room number 4. Check-in and check-out dates 5. Credit card number and expiration date.

When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner.

A dishonest employee can take cards home and, using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.

Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee re-issues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest’s information is electronically ‘overwritten’ on the card and the previous guest’s information is erased in the overwriting process.

But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it is usually kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT! The bottom line is: keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them by cutting them up, especially through the magnetic strip. NEVER leave them behind in the room, or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it’s illegal) and you’ll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader and used illegally.

With the hayfever season now in full swing a local optometrist is offering Lincoln’s hayfever sufferers specialist eye treatment to reduce irritation caused by the allergy.

“If you can’t avoid the pollen outside then you can help by wearing wrap-around eye protectors or sun spectacles” he said. “This reduces the exposure of the eyes to the pollen, lessening the symptoms.”

He added: “Wrap-around spectacles are best, but contact lenses can still be worn.

Daily disposables are the most practical during the hayfever season and help to protect the eyes in some instances.

“Keep eyes moist by using lubricating eye drops that will also wash pollen and histamines from the eyes and soothe the tissues. Keeping the drops in the fridge helps, as the cold lubricant takes away the heat and reduces the swelling.”

REFLECTIONS OF THE GREAT NORTH SWIM 2009 – (SO WHY AM I DOING IT AGAIN ON 4 SEPTEMBER 2010?)

Last year I entered my first open water organised event - the Great North Swim in Lake Windermere on 12 September 2009.

It was well organised, with a tremendous spirit among all those competing - all for various charities. Over two days almost 5,000 swimmers of all abilities and ages set off every half an hour in waves of around 250 swimmers. The highlight was watching the elite swimmers and of course the para-Olympians - who finished faster than most of the able-bodied people! But for me the greatest satisfaction was raising £379 for the two charities.

Although it was my first open water swim event I, along with the group I entered, have now got the bug - and it wasn’t anything we drank from the lake! So this year at 10.30am on Saturday 4 September I will again have struggled into my wet-suit (an even bigger challenge as I am slightly heavier due to lack of fitness training) and will be setting off on the 1 mile course to raise funds for STRUT in the Community.

Like many charities STRUT income has fallen away in the past couple of years and it will be great if I can reach at least last year’s total of £379.

My target in 2009 was to finish the one mile course within 45 minutes, but was timed at 39 minutes and 19 seconds.

This year I’d like to better that, but in my defence for perhaps failing to do so, last year the day was blessed with fantastic weather and the lake was a mill pond.

It’s very unlikely to be the same again on 4 September 2010 - but you never know!

Teamwork!

I saw a T-shirt recently with a slogan saying: “Teamwork means never having to take the blame yourself!”

How cynical, I thought. Clergy simply couldn’t do their job without people joining in to help and support their ministry and it certainly isn’t so that they can blame someone else! Perhaps England’s football team would have done a little better at the World Cup if they had played more like a team, and less like eleven individuals.

One week after the England team were well and truly thrashed by a German side that really played like a team, I was ordained to the priesthood in Lincoln Cathedral. I didn’t leave the team of people I work with, I wasn’t ‘promoted to the boardroom’, I just sort of changed my position on the pitch, but carried on playing in the same team, aiming for the same goal.

Strawberries & Cream all in a good cause !

On Saturday, 19 June 2010 Margaret Clawson’s annual Strawberry Tea was held in the Old School.

It was not the sunniest of days, but this has never been known to dampen the spirits of her determined bunch of helpers.

Raising funds for St Barnabas happens come rain or shine!

There were various stalls, including the very popular home-made cakes, along with an excellent raffle, a super Tombola, Teddy Bears’ Picnic draw and many other items and popular goodies for sale.

Tea was served, along with the delicious strawberries and cream or scones, and many generous visitors made it a sociable and profitable - afternoon for this popular charity fund-raising event.

Thanks to everyone concerned, the final grand total raised, including a couple of last-minute donations, amounted to a FABULOUS £1,230! beating even last year’s great success.

So a HUGE “Thank you” to all who came either to help, or to buy, and we hope to see you again, next year!

Many of you have been busily knitting throughout the year and we thank you so much for all the scarves, hats, gloves, etc, that we have already received. As you know, we are asked to make our boxes suitable for a family and I note the boxes will again be sent to Romania, Albania and Moldova.

In addition this year Bulgaria and the Ukraine have been added.

Link Romania has obviously identified great need in these countries too. So much help is needed and we know our boxes will generate so many smiles at Christmas time. Nettleham Cricket Club Cricket is well underway as we head towards the summer, with several Lincolnshire tournaments being held towards the start of the season.

The ECB triangular 20/20 qualifier was held on Bank Holiday Monday 4 May and Nettleham played host to one of the four qualifiers taking place on the day. A lot of organisation is needed by the host club to organise this tournament and NCC would like to thank Michelle Hall and Laura Stevens for preparing the refreshments; Dave Ranshaw, Chris Brown, David Wheatley and Colin Woolfson for the ground and pitch preparation; Martin Strawson and Dave Manby for the BBQ and Christine Brown for the bar.

These matches are 20 overs per side, with each bowler only allowed to bowl 4 overs with the new ‘pink’ ball. Fielding restriction were as seen on TV with 2 fielders inside the 15 yard circle and only 2 outside the 30 yard circle for the first 6 overs, then a minimum of 4 inside the 30 yards for the remaining 14 overs.

In typical Bank Holiday weather of overcast skies with the odd light shower and temperatures struggling to reach 50°, Nettleham, under the captaincy of Rob Cook, played Hartsholme in the opening game. Hartsholme batted first and made 152 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs, Shooter making 80; pick of the bowlers for Nettleham were Matt Smith with 3 for 27 and Rob Cook with 3 for 33. Nettleham chased well and reached their target of 155 for 5 in the 19th over, Matt O’Halloran making 44no, Russ Binnington 25 and Rob Cook 22.

The second match saw Market Deeping bat first against Hartsholme and make 232 for 2, Dave Gillett 106no. In reply Hartsolme struggled to 90 for 9, losing the match and were thus out of the competition. In the third and deciding match Nettleham batted first against Market Deeping and made 191 for 5, contributions from Russ Binnington 60, Matt Smith 40, Matt O’Halloran 23no and James Stevens 29no.

Market Deeping could only make 152 for 9 with Rob Cook taking 4 for 31, and James Stevens 2 for 32.

Nettleham progressed to the semi-finals held on Bank Holiday Monday 31 May at Sleaford in much sunnier and warmer weather. In the first match Skegness made 137, but Boston reached their target of 138 in the 18th over to progress to the final where they would meet the winners of the match between Nettleham and Bracebridge Heath.

Bracebridge won the toss and batted first making 162 for 8, Matt Smith taking 3 wickets for 25; in reply Nettleham struggled to 89 all out, Rob Cook top scoring with 31, and Aaron Onyon with 4 for 11 was Bracebridge’s best bowler.

In the final, Bracebridge Heath, put into bat, made 179 for 4. Boston, chasing, were all out for 126, so Bracebridge won the Winkworth Cup and progress to the regional finals being held at Skegness CC on 22 August.

In the Albion Cup, a local 18-over competition held between teams around Lincoln with all profits going to a local charity, Nettleham hosted the Lincolnshire Academy in a last 16 match in a sunny but cool evening at Mulsanne. Nettleham batted first and made 164 for 5, Warren Nel (40) and Russ Binnington (42) featuring in an opening stand of 85 runs, Matt Smith also contributing 39. In reply, the Lincolnshire Academy, featuring boys from the County U16-21 sides, could only reach 128 for 5. Pick of the Nettleham bowlers from their 4 overs were Phil England with 2 for 20 and Ben Brumby with 2 for 29.

Nettleham progressed to the quarter-finals where they played away at Louth, who, batting first, made 122 for 8. Best bowlers for Nettleham were Tom Dalton who bowled 2 overs taking 3 wickets for 16 runs, and Rob Cook who took 2 wickets for 23 off his 4 overs. In reply Nettleham reached 123 for 6, with Rob Cook on 48no, and Russ Binnington with 29 runs leading the victory.

Nettleham thus progressed to the semi-finals, where on Tuesday 15 June they played Lindum at Hartsholme. Lindum batted first and made 89 for 9, main wicket-takers in their 4 allotted overs were Tom Dalton with 2 for 15 runs, Rob Cook with 2 for 27 runs and Jack Bayliss with 2 for 16 runs. Nettleham chased with Rob Cook getting 23 and Tom Dalton going well on 27, when he was controversially given out backing up, and Nettleham were unable to score off the last ball of the match so unluckily lost. Lindum go forward to meet Bracebridge Heath in the final.

Nettleham’s bad luck continued in the Grimsby Knockout, where matches are played in front of a packed holiday crowd.

Batting first, Hull Jenners made 177 for 7 off their 16 8-ball overs, Paul Cook the best Nettleham bowler with figures of 4 overs 3 wickets for 28 runs. In reply Nettleham could only muster 150 for 7, top scorers were Matt Smith 38, James Stevens 34 and Russ Binnington 31.

However, in the league in June, and approaching halfway through the season the 1st XI lie in third place in the ECB league, having played 10 matches, won 4, drew 2, lost 2, with 2 matches lost to the weather.

In the first of June’s games against local rivals Lindum, Nettleham batted first and made 245 for 8 in their 50 overs, with good contributions from Rob Cook 58, Warren Nel 44, Matt O’Halloran 40 and Andy Hibberd 40. In reply Lindum openers chased well, but once they were out the middle order struggled to keep up with the run rate and good fielding and bowling saw Nettleham win in the very last over as they bowled Lindum out for 180. Pick of the Nettleham bowlers were Rob Cook with 3 for 22 off 5.1 overs; Paul Cook with 3 for 27 off 17 overs, and Andy Carter with 2 for 36 off 12 overs.

University students Andy Hibberd and Phil England leave the club after a successful early season performance to return home for the summer, and this will give the opportunity for the younger 2nd XI players to gain invaluable experience at this level.

The following week, in autumnal conditions, saw Nettleham entertain Boston, who batted first and were bowled out for only 124, with J Cheer making 77 of them. An excellent all-round bowling performance with Andy Carter gaining figures of 11 overs 3 wickets for 23 runs, Warren Nel 9 overs 3 wickets for 29 runs, Jack Bayliss 7 overs 2 wickets for 24 runs and Ben Brumby 4 overs 1 wicket for 19 runs. In reply an opening partnership of 91 between Dave Hutchinson (39) and Warren Nel (58no) assisted by 18no from Captain of the day, Matt Smith, saw Nettleham reach their target in the 24th over.

A second successive win showing team strength in depth as five regular players were missing this week.

The last match before submission of this article saw Nettleham travel away to league leaders Bracebridge Heath on the hottest day of the year. Nettleham won the toss and chose to bat, but were bowled out in 42 overs for 172, having been at one stage 123 for 2, Warren Nel making 94 and Matt Smith 46. Aaron Onyon bowling well for the opposition taking 4 wickets for 17 runs off 13 overs. Nettleham had never beaten Bracebridge Heath in any form of cricket, and giving them an extra 8 overs with their strong batting line-up containing several county players, the signs were ominous. Summer 2010 Nettleham bowl them out for 111 off just 33 overs, with only Brett Houston, making 42, showing any resistance. Nettleham only used 3 bowlers, whose magnificent figures were: Andy Carter 16.3 overs 4 wickets for 38, James Stevens 13 overs 4 wickets for 64, and Jack Bayliss 3 overs 2 wickets for 9. An excellent run of results for June leaves them optimistic for the rest of the summer.

The second team in Division 1 of the Lincs League lie fifth, having played 7, won 3, lost 3, no result 1. Their captain Martin Strawson reports that the Second XI have had a mixed start to the season. Problems with player availability has meant that we have used 28 players already at this stage of the season! However, the team’s attitude has been brilliant - in particular the last three matches, despite being in losing positions, they have not given in.

If this attitude continues then the next win cannot be far away!

Special mention should go to Alex Graham and Danny Lea. These two young bowlers, who both represent Lincolnshire at their age group, have performed brilliantly with the ball throughout the season.

The Ultimate Tall Ship Adventure Girlguiding is celebrating its centenary during 2010 and all members are being encouraged to do something exciting to make it a memorable year.

My centenary “mountaintop moment” came last month when I joined the tall ship Lord Nelson for a 10-day voyage from Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Boston (Lincolnshire, not USA!). On board was a crew of 20 guides and 4 Guide Leaders, none of whom had sailed before. Luckily we were accompanied by a very patient and understanding permanent crew, who had seen it all before.

As soon as we left the Tyne and entered the North Sea we set all of our sails (yet more mast climbing and lots of rope pulling!) and headed for Amsterdam. The wind, however, had other ideas and immediately dropped, so we spent the first night just off Middlesbrough. Once the wind picked up again it was in the wrong direction, but tall ships are meant to be sailed, so sail we did, during the day in the wrong direction, then we turned the engine on at night time and motored in the right direction.

In the middle of the North Sea there is an area known as the Indefatigable Banks (what a great name!). The sky was blue, the sea was blue and there was no wind at all - it was like being in the Mediterranean. Taking advantage of the great weather, I decided to climb right to the very top of the main mast - what a fantastic view from up there!

Amsterdam was buzzing when we arrived, with everyone dressed in orange; then we realised that it was the day of the World Cup final and Holland were in it.

Sea sickness hit us all as we made our way back across the North Sea to England. It was the swell that made us feel so nauseous. I was really looking forward to seeing the Lincolnshire coastline from the sea, however the weather was closing in as we approached the Wash and all I could see was Butlins!

Before we’d even left Newcastle, we were given the opportunity to climb up the mast and move out along the yards to do some work on the sails.

I have to say having my feet on a thin piece of rope, my tummy pressed against the yard with both of my arms at full stretch while I untied a sail, as the Tyne flowed along far below me was quite an unsettling experience.

We anchored in the Wash for the night and when I came on watch at 4.00am the wind speed was a steady 30 knots, the sea very choppy. Thanks to Captain Claire and the pilot we were able to make it safely up the Haven and into Boston dock.

Sometimes I’m asked why I run Guides, giving up my own time to take other people’s daughters on camps and holidays. Well if I wasn’t a Guide Leader I would never have been given the opportunity to sail the tall ship Lord Nelson from Newcastle to Holland and home to Lincolnshire.

Nettleham Woodland T The year 2010 marks the centenary of Girl Guiding UK and it was suggested to Elizabeth Tebbs, the leader of 2nd Nettleham Guides, that an oak tree could be planted in PC Wood to mark the auspicious occasion.

Elizabeth readily agreed and on the 10 May the guides held a ceremony to place a plaque by the tree. Rachel Morran, the oldest guide and Beth Cassidy, the youngest, placed the plaque.

Sills & Betteridge Sponsorship In recognition of their company’s 250th birthday, on Tuesday 4 May Steve Wilson, senior partner from Sills & Betteridge, solicitors, presented NWT with a cheque for £500 and placed a commemorative plaque adjacent to the 100 trees and shrubs which they planted at ‘Tree O’Clock’ in December 2009 at Monks Wood.

In today’s environmentally-conscious world, sponsorship of such ‘green’ initiatives provides an excellent opportunity for commercial organizations to offset their ‘carbon footprint’ and Nettleham Woodland Trust would welcome any further sponsorship in their work to create new local amenity woodland.

The evening was made even more interesting because the guides had to find their way to the oak tree from the guide hut using maps, as part of their “Find Your Way” badge. Trying to identify one oak amongst over a hundred was made a little easier as the top of the stake had been previously painted blue by Susie Mendel, Secretary of the Nettleham Woodland Trust! (who kindly sent in the photographs).

Trust in the Community Regular readers of Nettleham News may remember that on page 66 of the summer 2010 edition of the magazine, there was a report about the Young Persons’ Design Challenge competition, sponsored by Star Energy, to create a design for a main threshold gateway to Monks Wood at Ashing Lane Nature Reserve, Dunholme.

The final design, a combination of a number of different concepts put forward by the competition entrants, is now nearing completion. These photographs show the preparation of the larch timber and the progress of threshold construction over the past few months.

NETTLEHAM ART GROUP ANNUAL EXHIBITION Nettleham Art Group held its Sixth Annual Exhibition in the Old School over the weekend Friday 9 to Sunday 11 July 2010.

For the first time the exhibition was open on a Friday afternoon and evening and this proved quite popular, especially in the afternoon when a good number of paintings were sold. As always, the event proved to be a very well-attended village attraction, with over 350 visitors coming to look round and a record number of paintings (52) sold and other art and craft items, amounting to £769.00. Commission from pictures sold, admission fee income and donations in the collecting tin enabled the Group to donate the sum of £155.00 to the British Heart Foundation, the charity selected by our members this year.

The exhibition is a showcase of the group’s artistic endeavours over the previous twelve months. Each member completed and framed a maximum of eight paintings for display. A number of visitors who have been to the exhibition in previous years commented that the standard and variety of work was improving year on year, testimony to the skill and enthusiasm of each member and the advice, support and encouragement that we give to each other.

Comments written in the Visitors’ Book included “a high standard and diverse subjects”, “an inspiration”, “a lovely variety of styles and subjects”, and “a credit to your group”.

As always with this type of group, where members paint just what they want without direction, the subjects were indeed very varied. For example, ten portraits were displayed in the main exhibition, 35 birds and animals, 48 landscapes, 25 flowers and floral subjects, 14 Nettleham and Lincoln views, 16 paintings of buildings, 5 abstracts and many others.

Watercolour remains the medium chosen by most of our artists (94 of the paintings in the exhibition), but pastels are increasing in popularity (25 pictures) and acrylics (22), oils (12) and pen and ink or wash (7) were also used by members. In addition to the main display of pictures, a wide variety of art and craft items were available for visitors to purchase - unframed, mounted paintings, prints and greetings cards.

Shaping Care: Community Liaison Group 4 June 2010 Introduction The Shaping Care Community Liaison Group will provide a mechanism for two-way communication between Lincolnshire County Council and the views of local groups and residents in each of the local areas as part of the Shaping Care agenda for the 21st Century.

It will explore the best way to share information and ideas between its members to ensure that the views and concerns of individuals and groups are considered during any future change.

Here we consider the terms of reference of the groups’ purpose, membership, process, responsibility and potential support.

Terms of Reference These terms of reference are draft only and should be considered by the Community Liaison Group at its first meeting - which will be organised post-decision making at Executive Council June 2010.

Membership Membership of the Community Liaison Group will be limited to 16 people, to ensure meetings are productive and manageable. If more expressions of interest are received for joining the group than can be accommodated, LCC will take an initial decision on which groups will be invited to join the group, ensuring that the membership fairly reflects the different communities in the local area and a range of different interests and opinions.

Any organisation, or representative, not invited to join the group at this stage will instead be placed on a reserve list. At its first meeting, the Liaison Group can review this reserve list and confirm the membership of the group.

The purpose of the Community Liaison Group is to encourage discussion between representatives of the local community, service users/carers/families and LCC on the proposals for our eight care homes.

An independent expert facilitator will lead the first meeting of the Community Liaison Group. At this first meeting, the group will agree its terms of reference, along with a programme for future meetings. It is suggested that this will consist of a series of topics, to be discussed in more detail, along with a number of standard agenda items to provide an update on the proposals and other news.

The group will serve as a mechanism for unit managers, community representatives, service users, families and LCC to talk to each other about the proposals, so that information flows in all directions.

Following group meetings, it is hoped that all members of the Liaison Group will also share information, news and views with their own organisations, service users and the wider community, as well as listening to local views and bringing them back to the group.

The Liaison Group does not have any decision-making powers, but will be able to raise issues with Lincolnshire County Council and will be kept informed by LCC throughout the programme. The intention is that the Liaison Group will remain in place for the life of the individual project.

The Liaison Group is being established by LCC, which will provide administrative support to the group once it is in place.

After this time the group will control its own agenda and frequency of meetings.

The Liaison Group has no opinion on the proposals in its own right. It is only intended to provide a platform for discussion. Membership of the group does

Opportunity to take part in the groups will be made known at local levels and amongst the groups listed above. A list will be generated as places are taken up for each locality group.

Members of the group will be able to send a substitute to meetings they cannot attend in person.

Administration of written notes will be the responsibility of the LCC Communications representative for the first and subsequent meetings.

An agenda will be prepared for each meeting and a note of issues discussed taken (this will not be a verbatim report of each meeting). When agreed, these notes will be put in the public domain and published online on the Lincolnshire County Council website.

Meetings will be held monthly while proposals are tabled and considered (or more or less frequently as the members of 41

Where are we with the work?

Shaping Care for the 21st Century is a review looking at the future role and function of care homes in Lincolnshire.

This review has informed the Council’s thinking with regards to the eight care homes owned and run by us.

A report to the Council’s Executive on 1 June 2010 outlined the strategic vision with regard to future services for older people in Lincolnshire. The report also detailed the findings of an extensive and wide ranging consultation programme that had been undertaken. Consultations started in July 2009 and have continued through to May 2010.

Why do we need to make changes to this type of care?

Three major changes have impacted the county’s Adult Social Care services in the last few years - the policy context within which services in Lincolnshire are delivered: (1) our growing population of older people (2) residents’ expressed wishes on what kind of modernised services should be available, now and in the future (3) Continuing to provide social care services in line with the historic pattern will not deliver the services residents should expect, nor is it sustainable to the public purse, as pressures on local authority funding are set to increase for the foreseeable future.

Detailed independent analysis of the consultation responses identified general agreement with the Council’s overall vision, but also initial opposition to the Council taking steps to close existing Council homes.

At the June Executive, the Council signalled its agreement to change the balance of care in line with the “Shaping Care for the 21st Century” vision and pursue improved services for older people.

In listening closely to what people have said, on their needs and concerns, the Council also determined to set out five commissioning principles.

At the 6 July Executive meeting we will consider the options available to us in pursuing these goals and decide on next steps.

An Outline Business Case has now been developed to show how the County Council may now best achieve its strategic vision against the requirements to meet these five commissioning principles.

What are the five commissioning principles?

These principles will underpin our decision-making going forward.

They are that future services: ● should ensure current levels of high quality care are maintained and that every opportunity is taken to improve people’s experiences and outcomes; ● are responsive and help meet need arising from an aging population; ● are modernised and fit for the 21st Century; ● achieve value for money; ● are accessible and support local communities.

Nettleham Heritage March: The last in a series of winter talks in John Wilford, an expert in church history, came to give us the second instalment of his story of the Gilbertines. John said he would tell us two stories in this session which would reveal a lot about life in a Gilbertine house. However firstly he filled in some of the details of life in a typical house.

At Gilbert’s death there were nine double priories (for and run by nuns), lots of small cells and four priory hospitals (for and run by canons, or, as in Lincoln, canons and lay sisters). There were 2,400 religious sisters and brothers who mourned for him, of these 1,500 were nuns and lay sisters and 700 canons and lay brothers.

In January 1202 Gilbert was canonised because of all these religious women and men living in the houses he founded and dedicating their lives to God. Other orders did not want women, except for the Benedictines, and they only accepted high status women. The other orders did eventually take in women, but in separate houses. The Cistercians opened a house for women at Stixwold, but the monks were at Kirkstead. These were small monasteries for women, who had to look to a nearby male monastery for help and support.

Other orders used the same system.

However Gilbert had the vision that men and women could live together as one family.

Gilbert’s houses were run like a big manor house. The first one was around his own home and the first nuns were regarded as family. The lay sisters were looked on as the domestic servants and the lay brothers as outside or farm servants. The nuns were told to live by the rule of St Benedict “in as far as their weaker bodies permit”. Each had three elected prioresses, who took it in turns to be the senior one. These were the mother figure, or lady, of the house.

A sub-prioress sorted out discipline and rotas. A cellarer and sub-cellarer looked after the kitchen and catering, a sacristess the bell and timekeeping and the precentrix liturgy, singing, the library and books. Then there were monitors or scrutineers, who made sure people fulfilled their duties. The choir was of nuns.

In 1148 canons were added and had to adopt the same structure. The lay sisters were like the domestic staff in a great

house and had their own prioress to keep an eye on them. On feast days there were recreation periods when the lay sisters could go out for a walk, or listen to the choir nuns reading to them. Food was passed from the kitchen through a hatch to the canons. The diet was mostly vegetarian, but meat was allowed in the infirmary for the sick or old. Beer was brewed. Clothes were made by the lay sisters. The lay brothers mostly did the outside work, they were usually previously tradesmen, farmers, gardeners, builders, woodcutters, foresters and metal smiths.

Abbeys accepted all comers, even the village idiot! This was Gilbert’s firm philosophy.

Gilbertine canons wore the white habit of the Cistercians, with a black cope. The nuns wore a black habit with a white cowl.

The lay brothers and sisters wore grey.

Children in need were taken in and educated, especially in Lincoln and Malton, Yorkshire. There is evidence of schools.

Girls could not enter the novitiate until the age of fifteen. At eighteen they could take their first vows if suitable, otherwise they could continue with their studies until they were deemed suitable (usually meaning literate). Lay sisters, who were not required to be literate, took their vows at twenty.

Boys could join the novitiate at fifteen and become a canon at twenty. Then, if they so desired, they could be ordained at twenty-six or so. Some were sent to Oxford or Stamford universities to continue their education.

A religious house was often a benefit to the local community. Sometimes they provided a veterinary service to local farmers. People flooded to the monasteries and others wanted to endow them.

Remember this was the time of the Anarchy (the fight for the throne between Matilda or Maud, daughter of the late Henry I, and her cousin, Stephen of Blois, son of William I’s daughter).

The different orders called their religious adherents by different names - canons, monks, friars, etc. Each monastery for monks only had sufficient priests for their own needs. Premonstratensians, Gilbertines and Cistercians had canons who were automatically priests, but not monks.

It was difficult to tell the difference even then and more so today.

John’s first story is about the nun of Watton (just over the Humber in Yorkshire). The story was told by the Cistercian Aelred of Rivaulx, previously Abbot of Revesby. He visited various 44

religious houses to inspect them and acted as a trouble-shooter. He wrote a report of this story. Watton was built by a local baron Eustace Fitzjohn as penance for taking arms against Stephen in the Anarchy. Eustace and Gilbert oversaw the building of the monastery. It was for a community of women living together in harmony. The nuns there created “a heaven on earth”. Aelred had previously witnessed an unspecified miracle there.

An orphaned girl of about the age of four was sent to the nuns at Watton to be cared for and educated. She eventually became a nun. By 1165-6 she was about nineteen years old and was a spirited girl, showing little observance of her religious duties and resisted all efforts to correct her. One day a lay brother went into the Priory to do some work. This nun spoke to this attractive young man and they met often and fell in love. It was said she went out a virgin and returned an adultress, this latter because she was a bride of Christ.

The pregnancy showed in time and, when questioned, she confessed her love. Her fellow nuns were horrified and mortified.

They all felt that they shared her shame.

They seized her and beat her savagely.

She had to be rescued by her superiors.

There was a formal hearing and she was punished by being shackled in a cell and put on a diet of bread and water. She is then said to have realised the magnitude of her sins and was filled with remorse.

The guilty lay brother fled the monastery and tried to hide, but he did care for the nun and sent her a secret message via a friend. The nun begged to be set free so that she could go to him and they could bring up the child together. The other nuns would not allow this and she was forced to betray his whereabouts. Another lay brother who felt shamed by the incident went to the escapee and told him that he had arranged a meeting with his lover.

Yet another lay brother dressed as the nun and the lay brother was captured in this trap. Some of the nuns wanted revenge on the adulterous lay brother. They asked permission to spend time with him. This granted, they pounced on him and forced the errant nun to hack off his sex organs and stuff them into the mouth of this sinner. The nuns felt as though they too had been violated and the peace of the priory had been shattered. The pregnant nun went back to her cell. The following morning she appeared radiant and said she had had a dream in which the bishop, who had sent her to the priory, appeared to her and asked her to make peace with

Association Winter Talks the Old School during the winter months of 2009/10 everyone. The next night she claimed she had another dream in which the archbishop appeared with two beautiful ladies who helped her to give birth and then took the baby away with them. After this she was radiant again and appeared to be a virgin with no sign of a baby.

At this point Aelred had been called in and he went to visit the nun at the centre of this story in her cell. One of her shackles fell off at his arrival. He ordered that this shackle was to be left off, but the other one was to stay in place. However after he left the cell the other shackle also fell off.

Aelred declared a miracle had happened as the nun was restored to her virginity and the shackles had fallen off. The lay brother disappeared from the limelight, perhaps he was reintegrated into the community, however the nun became a celebrity. It was said “What God has made clean you have no right to profane. What He has made clean you have no right to bind.”

This story tells us a few things about life in a Gilbertine house. It paints a rather rosy picture of the life there. It shows that a four year old girl could be brought up and educated in a priory. It also showed that lay brothers had easy access to the nuns’ quarters in order to maintain them. Aelred pointed out that this ease of access should be reviewed and suspected that Gilbert’s view of life in his houses was idealistic and unrealistic. This story also shows that an individual’s sin left the whole priory feeling violated. Aelred satisfied himself that the necessary peace had been restored and no further action was needed, except that the lay brothers did have too easy access to the nuns.

The second story is of the revolt of the lay brothers. In 1148, canons/priests were introduced into Gilbertine houses to care for the pastoral needs of the nuns and lay brothers and sisters. The lay brothers were still responsible for the material needs of the nuns and the day to day running of the priory. The early canons were not involved in the running of the estate, which was left to the nuns and lay brothers. Two senior lay brothers, Ogger and Gerard, dealt with Gilbert and ran the priories. They had great power. By this time, c1166, Aelred, probably as a result of the earlier story, had recommended to Gilbert that a closer eye should kept on the relationship between the nuns and the lay brothers.

The canons appeared to try to wrest power from the lay brothers. From 1166-9 there was a power struggle between the canons and lay brothers. Gilbert decided that he

wanted the canons to take over all authority in the priories and oust the lay brothers from positions of power. At the beginning of this time of unrest Gilbert was seventy-seven years old. Ogger and Gerard protested that they had had full responsibility for the order and now the canons wanted to take over. According to the lay brothers the canons mixed freely with the nuns and caused scandals. They appealed to the exiled Thomas à Becket, but he could not help, so they then went to the Pope. The Pope ordered Gilbert to separate his nuns and canons and keep them apart. Gilbert was angry, but was advised to back down. A bishop maintained that there was no evidence of general impropriety between nuns and canons, as there was only one known case.

The lay brothers then appealed to the King, but the King supported Gilbert. The Pope became exasperated by the whole situation and appointed four bishops to investigate the matter.

This commission found that the lay brothers had only made vows to Gilbert and found no evidence of impropriety between the nuns and canons. It found in favour of Gilbert. An amnesty was granted to the lay brothers involved, but Ogger and his followers refused to go back to the order. Although no abuses of the system had been found, Gilbert was ordered to tighten up on security. From 1169 canons and lay brothers were ordered to worship in separate churches from the nuns and lay sisters. Thus a wall was built down the centre of Gilbertine churches to separate the sexes. We don’t know if there were two separate masses, or one mass which could be seen on both sides of the dividing wall. The lay brothers still retained considerable authority and power as they remained responsible for all the farm work and its revenues.

This one, discovered on an old postcard dated 1906, was sent by Ward Bros (a village shop on Church Street) to the Revd H Joffe of Thorseway [sic], near Caistor, informing him that his lamp would be forwarded to him on Monday.

This lecture was attended by twenty-six people, lower than our recent numbers, but unfortunately the date coincided with a number of other events. As always, any mistakes are mine.

PRESS RELEASE FROM LINCOLN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB: AUGUST 2010

CLUB RELOCATION Last night (28 July 2010) West Lindsey District Council granted Lincoln RFC planning permission to build a new clubhouse and playing area on 32 acres of land on the edge of Nettleham.

Over ten years ago the club committee reluctantly came to the decision that the facilities at the Lindum Sports Club were no longer large enough to cope with a rapidly growing number of players, particularly in the mini and junior sections.

A search for alternative sites commenced, and now, after ten years of frustration, the club is delighted to have got the go-ahead.

Once the new facilities are ready for use the club will be in a position to achieve its aims of increasing participation across all age groups, introducing girls’ and women’s rugby and becoming a major force in rugby in the area.

The playing area will allow for up to four full size pitches and seven smaller junior and mini pitches. In the summer months it is hoped that the facility will be used for

Rugby League, as well as tag rugby and rounders.

The proposed clubhouse will have six changing rooms, as well as a bar and social areas. It is designed to cater for the disabled and has been identified as a potential centre for “boccia”, a game similar to indoor bowls suitable for the disabled. The club, which is keen to work closely with the local community, would welcome suggestions for other appropriate sports uses for the ground and clubhouse.

The club will be leasing the land at Lodge Farm, just two minutes from the ring road junction with Wragby Road, from the University of Lincoln. The University will also be using the ground to play Rugby Union, Rugby League and American Football. At present they have to travel to either Newark or Sleaford to find suitable facilities.

On hearing the news, Robin Wright, the Director of Sport at the University, said: “We are delighted that the club is to

commence the development of a new ground at Nettleham, which will enhance and widen the opportunity for playing rugby across our local communities.

As a University that has both successful academic sports programmes and has excellent recreational rugby teams playing within the British Universities Sports leagues, this will provide a superb opportunity to improve facilities and access to participate. It is amazing that a voluntary club, and particularly those volunteering in that club, endeavour and strive to build a better society for our younger generations to enjoy playing sport. As we enter a golden decade of sport, with 2012 less than two years ahead of us, this is our very own golden legacy.”

Club President Bill Green said: “I am delighted with this decision, which will allow us to develop a facility to meet our current and future needs. It will allow us to introduce girls’ and women’s rugby, as well as resolving the situation where, due to lack of space, we have turned players away in some of our junior and mini age groups. We are looking forward to working closely with West Lindsey District Council and other bodies to develop participation in active sport in the area.”

The hard work now starts to find the remaining funding to turn the project into reality. The estimated project costs are in the region of £1,400,000. The club has been awarded a substantial grant by the Lincoln Longdales Trust and has also been awarded a grant by West Lindsey District Council. Now that planning permission is in place the club can apply to the Rugby Football Union for funding.

There will, however, still be a funding gap of some £300,000/£400,000 that the club needs to fill. The Relocation Appeal Fund will now be relaunched; this includes personal schemes such as “Buy a Brick” and Foundation Life Membership, as well as a range of schemes for businesses. £75,000 has already been pledged. The Lincoln Rugby Club Lincoln Rugby Club Planning Application to West Lindsey On 28 July 2010, West Lindsey District Council Planning Committee voted in favour of allowing the Lincoln Rugby Club to build a 32-acre rugby facility including 4 playing pitches and 7 junior pitches, plus a 2-storey clubhouse, on land off Lodge Lane, Nettleham.

Representations were made by John Evans on behalf of the Parish Council and also members of the public (who were opposed to the application).

A copy of the Parish Councils’ representation, which summarizes the background and the position of the Parish Council follows: Lincoln Rugby Club Briefing Note Ref: attendance at WLDC’s Planning Committee Meeting by Representatives of Nettleham Parish Council Background The Parish Council wishes to point out to the Planning Committee that the village is very much divided on whether or not it wishes to see the Rugby Club re-locate to Nettleham. This was indeed reflected at the Special Meeting of the Parish Council held on the 25 November where: (1) Residents present were approx 60% against and 40% in favour and (2) The Parish Council voted 4 - 3 against the Development with 2 technical abstentions.

In the view of the Parish Council it is probably fair to say that this split is indicative of the village as a whole.

We acknowledge that at Public Meetings many of those in favour of a particular development simply stay away.

Having said that, the Parish Council’s formal position is that it is opposed to the development for the detailed reasons set out in our letter to WLDC dated 8 December 2009, which is, of course, before the Committee this evening.

Summary of the Parish Council’s position Nettleham Parish Council has for many years been instrumental in providing first-class sports and recreational facilities at our 10-acre sports facility, Mulsanne Park, which is enjoyed, not only by residents of Nettleham, but also those of other nearby villages, such as Sudbrooke and Scothern.

Whilst these facilities do not include the provision of rugby pitches, the Parish Council considers that the scale and size of the proposed 32-acre project is overwhelming and disproportionate to the needs of such local communities and would be out of character with our village.

Moreover, we have been advised that the proposals, which would amount to a regional project, are in direct conflict with the requirements of PPG 17 which clearly states that sports facilities should only be located at the edge of villages if they are for local use, larger facilities should be located at the edge of county towns.

The Planning Officers’ report compares Nettleham as being similar in size to other villages in West Lindsey and concludes that as there are few county towns in the District where PPG17 could be satisfied, then effectively PPG17 should not apply. This is a non-sequitur; there is no fundamental reason why the facility should be sited in West Lindsey at all. Most of the club 50

members are from Lincoln or the south of the county. Transport issues are a vital consideration if it is located in West Lindsey.

The Parish Council also object on the grounds of increased traffic flow through the village and this has been subsequently supported by Lincolnshire Highway Authority.

The issue of traffic congestion and safety through the centre of the village has been dismissed in the Planning Officers’ report.

The Highway Authority is the expert in these matters and its advice is clear.

We as residents concur with its professional opinion. Contrary to the Planning Officers’ report, we do not have any buses passing near the site and the buses which do call at the village have stops at the western end, A46 and central area, at least a 20-minute walk away from the site.

The last bus leaves Nettleham for Lincoln at 19.50.

The site is off an unlit country lane, with no footpath or cycleway, so another safety issue for non-car traffic, especially after dark through the winter months. So the project also fails on the issue of sustainable transport to the site (PPG17 section 26).

It is fair to say that the Parish Council would have supported the proposal had it amounted to the provision of say 2 or 3 rugby pitches, which would have adequately met the needs of the locality. However, on the basis of the current proposals the Parish Council would urge the Committee to dismiss the application.

If, despite the objections of the Parish Council to the project, the Committee is mindful to grant planning

Planning Application District Council to Relocate to Lodge Lane permission - can I remind you that the Parish Council requested a Section 106 Agreement in our letter of objection dated 8 December 2009.

At that time we were specifically advised by the then Planning Officer Mr Ian Dickenson that Section 106 was applicable. However, we note that the current Planning Officer advises in his Report that, in his opinion, Section 106 is not apposite. The Parish Council would nevertheless strongly urge the Committee to either: (1) Impose a Condition requiring the LRC to enter into a Section 106 Agreement, or (2) Impose appropriate Planning Conditions in lieu that will thereby secure for the village the various benefits that LRFC undertook to provide.

In summary, this proposed development is overwhelming, disproportionate and in conflict with PPG 17. It would introduce real traffic safety hazards both to villagers and users of the facility, in conflict with professional advice by the Highway Authority, and is not sustainable without the use of cars, contrary to PPG17. To help with your deliberations relevant sections of PPG17 is attached.

Further Information The meeting was attended by our Ward Members of the District Council, Alf Frith and Malcolm Leaning, who

both spoke in favour of the scheme.

The application was passed on a vote of 6:1, the only person opposed to the scheme was the Ward Member for Scothern and Sudbrooke, who was concerned about the traffic situation, having long experience of trying to turn on to the A158, from Sudbrooke.

This concern had also been expressed by the Lincolnshire Highways Authority who could foresee that traffic would back up at the junction of Lodge Lane and would turn back through the village centre, causing even more congestion and a potential highway safety problem along High Street.

Despite the above the Parish Council will now: 1) Write to the Highways Authority for their further advice as to what (if anything) can be done to ameliorate the situation with regard to the traffic and road safety issues raised by the granting of planning permission.

2) Enter into positive dialogue with the Rugby Club to ensure that the “benefits” to the village promised by them at the time of the submission of the planning application are delivered. The Rugby Club confirmed in writing on the 29 July that they will honour their undertakings to the Parish Council of 18 November 2009.

A report on the WLDC Planning meeting will be an Agenda item for the Parish Council meeting on 16 September 2010.

Albert Einstein An elderly Chinese woman had two large water pots, which hung on the ends of a yoke which she carried.

One of the pots had a crack in it, whilst the other pot was perfect.

At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, but the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its imperfection and that it could only do half of what it should do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream: “I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.”

The old woman smiled, “Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other?

That’s because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path and every day as we walk back to the house, you water them.”

“For two years I have picked these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.”

Each of us have our own unique imperfections. But it’s the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You’ve just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

Nettleham Carnival The Green, Nettleham, Saturday 10 July 2010 This was the hottest Nettleham Carnival day that most of us can remember, and that may have been the reason that attendance seemed to be lower than usual. Nonetheless it was a good day and was enjoyed by everyone who came.

The Spitfire arrived early for the fly-over it was due to arrive at 2.25pm, but actually arrived slightly early at 2.20pm! Wasn’t that Spitfire sound great!

All the acts on the stage were applauded, especially the Irish Dancing and Feet First the Clown, and the Drama Group gave a well rehearsed and funny performance.

The Force Band gave their usual polished programme of the rock music that we all remember and closed the afternoon, before the Prize Draw.

The Procession was led onto The Green by Feet First, and the participants judged by representatives of The Queen’s Park School, the Carnival Charity this year, who picked as Best Float: Nettleham Scouts, Beavers and Cubs, who came as Annie Get Your Gun, and Best Walking Group: Nettleham Beckside Pre-School who came as Wizard of Oz. They both received £25 donated by Wecando Flooring and Carr Financial respectively. They also received Waitrose Trophies presented by Karan Mason, Duty Manager of Waitrose.

2010 The Carnival was then opened by Mastair Sutherland, Acting Head Teacher of Queen’s Park School, who spoke about the school. Next was the presentation of the new Carnival Queen and Carnival Princess, who were chosen by ballot at the Junior school and Infant schools respectively.

The 2010 Queen was Megan Chadbone and Princess was Emily McRobbie, and they were presented with cloak and tiara by 2009 Queen Rhiannon Purvis and Princess Connie Chapman. They were also both presented with a hand-tied posy donated

by Flowers by Design.

The Fancy Dress Competition was judged

by Alastair Sutherland who chose Findlay Spence as an Urchin and Jessica Wyatt as a Clown, and they each received £10 donated by RF LINCS and David Burghardt respectively. The Carnival then proceeded with the programme.

It should be emphasised that all Nettleham’s businesses donated prizes for the Raffle, and additional prizes came from national donors. Andy Handford, our village butcher provided burgers for the barbeque. The results of the Carnival Raffle can be seen on a number of different notice-boards around the village.

The Carnival cannot be staged without the willing assistance of volunteers and village organisations, among whom are: Nettleham WI, who always provide refreshments donated by themselves and give the proceeds to the Carnival; Nettleham Gardeners Association, who donate to Carnival funds; the people who erect stalls and gazebos and take them down and clear The Green afterwards; Tony Hopkinson who provides the top-class PA system; Colleen Roberts who trains the Irish Dancers; Threshold who set up the games in Burghardt’s car park; Malc Booth who organised the Classic Cars; the Harley Davidson owners who joined in the Procession, and, lastly, The Tea Cozy, who collected prizes for the Tombola.

The Carnival raised in excess of £3,000 and Queen’s Park School will receive £650.

Second Nettleham Guides Second Nettleham Guides had a fantastic weekend away at camp earlier this year, spending the Bank Holiday together at the Nellie Doubleday camp site, in Trusthorpe, on the east coast.

2010 is Girl Guiding’s centenary year, so the theme for the camp was ‘Celebrate Centenary!’. We started the camp on Saturday morning going back in time to the founding year of guides: 1910 and worked our way forward to the present day, doing things from different decades along the way.

We started our weekend as they would have done at a camp back in the days of Baden Powell, with a reminder of the original Guide Laws; my particular favourite is the one about guides ‘obeying’ the leaders... why on earth did they get rid of that law! A couple of hours later and a few decades down the time-line, we all took part in a rationing challenge, earning our tea by doing some war-time activities. We used authentic recipes to create some ‘national bread loaves’ and a thrifty trifle! What the girls didn’t realise was that as well as earning their tea, they also had to cook it on the camp fire, with the added hardship of a very cold wind!

On Sunday we had a walk to 1970’s Mablethorpe, stopping at the fair and the life-boat station along the way.

On return we shared a great camp fire with a group of brownies also staying on the site. Everyone had fun toasting marshmallows in the heat of the fire.

All too quickly the time-line rolled on to the 1990’s for our cosmopolitan croissants and then onto the present day, when we celebrated the centenary making bracelets and bunting in centenary colours. Over the weekend we spanned 100 years, endured gale-force winds and experienced all the joys of camp life.

Thanks to all the guides who could easily match the spirit of their original 1910 counterparts and to the leaders who give up so much of their time to make the centenary happen for today’s girls.

All Saints Church Flower Festival Friday 18 - Sunday 20 June 2010 All Saints Church was bright with flowers during the Flower Festival, which ran from Friday 18 - Sunday 20 June 2010, with many stunning and colourful arrangements to delight visitors to this popular event in the village.

The theme was “Words of Wisdom� and each flower arrangement was an individual interpretation of a specific saying or proverb, depicted in flowers and associated objects.

A number of readers have contacted the magazine expressing consternation at this sign, recently installed at Mulsanne Park.

As some of them pointed out, this is a PUBLIC park and the potential danger of having fierce guard dogs present in the area is very intimidating.

But you can rest assured, these patrols are more likely to be during the hours covered by the dusk to dawn curfew. Members of the general public using the park can be assured that during normal park opening hours the dog will ALWAYS be on a leash.

The security company has also been asked to check on other Council property in the village from time to time, including Bill Bailey’s and the Old School.

This year it was the turn of our French twin village of Mulsanne to act as host and on Friday 9 April a coach-load of “twinners” set off from Nettleham to spend a very enjoyable five days with their French hosts.

Highlights of the visit were the reception and dinner hosted by M Jean-Claude Ferré, Mayor of the municipality of Mulsanne, a visit to the chateau at Anger with its unique tapestry, the Cointreau distillery and the ITF printing works with its high-tech equipment producing magazines, brochures, books, packaging, etc.

Most important, however, was renewing old friendships, (the twinning is now in its 32nd year) and making new ones. The association’s members look forward to greeting their French friends again on their 2011 visit to Nettleham.

Both Mulsanne and Nettleham committees run fund-raising events to help pay for outings, visits and functions for their visitors.

On 1 May, the Nettleham Twinning Association, in association with Scothern Players, presented an evening of two one-act plays under the heading “Food for Thought”, which included a two-course meal in the village hall. This was a sell-out and a very enjoyable evening for all concerned.

The next major event will be a “Talk and Valuation” evening with David Barby of TV’s Bargain Hunt. This will be held in the Village Hall on 16 October (see the Nettleham Noticeboard on page 3 for more information).

The association is always keen to attract new members and to encourage the development of more contact between our twin villages of Nettleham and Mulsanne.

Old Photographs

These two photographs, kindly sent in by Val Darbyshire of Troika (who took the pictures) shows passers-by on Church Street gazing helplessly at the fire which devastated All Saints Church in 1969. of Nettleham These photographs, given to me by Ian Straw, are of various people outside Prospect House the big house on the corner of Lodge Lane and Sudbrooke Lane.

His wife’s brother-in-law, a Mr Pearson, lived there until the 1970s. It is thought that the Pearson family moved there c1912, from a farm further down the lane. Although the aforementioned Mr Pearson was born in 1924, he had older brothers and one born in 1912 is thought to have been born in Prospect House.

Kelly’s Directories of 1909, 1919 and 1922 list Pearson brothers as farmers in Nettleham, but all three, plus the 1933 directory, list Miss Wingad at Prospect House. However, directories are notorious for failing to remove old information, so should only ever be used as a general guide.

The Wingads certainly lived in Prospect House, it is thought, for most of the nineteenth century.

It is also possible that the Pearsons and the Wingads were related. The evidence for this is two adjacent gravestones in the village cemetery, each one in the shape of a cross and both in the same kerbed enclosure. One gravestone is for “George and Elizabeth Wingad and their daughter Elizabeth” and the other is for “Elizabeth daughter of George and Mary Pearson”. Another possible scenario is that the Pearsons moved into Prospect House to care for an ageing Miss Wingad.

Also given along with the photographs was a bible, sadly not dated by the publisher, but with the title page reading: “The Holy Bible containing Old and New Testaments, according to the Authorized Translation: With all the Parallel Texts and Marginal Readings. To which are added notes and practical observations designed to help to a correct understanding of the Sacred Writings.” In this bible there are some Wingad family details recorded as follows: George Wingad born 12 April 1823 Elizabeth Proctor born 8 April 1831 John Wingad died 19 January 1834 at 8 o’clock at night aged 40 years Mary Wingad died 15 April 1844 at 1 o’clock in the morning Sarah Wingad died .......

George and Elizabeth Wingad married 14 October 1852 Mary Elizabeth Wingad born 12 May 1862 (Is this the Miss Wingad living in Prospect House in the early 1900s?)

George Wingad died 11 February 1899 aged 75 years at 12.45 Saturday morning, buried Shrove Tuesday 14 February at 2.30 Elizabeth Wingad beloved wife of George Wingad died 5 September 1899 aged 68 years at 5.45 Tuesday night, buried 8 September at 3 o’clock.

On the Threshold In the previous edition of Nettleham News we explained that we are changing the time and nature of some of our church meetings. Our aim is to make church accessible at different times and to provide a mix of services, life story-based talks and social events, which you can come along to and learn more about the Christian life.

We’re really in a period of transition towards this new approach, so in this edition of the magazine we’re giving a brief overview of the different activities.

‘Dwell’ ‘Dwell’ is a new contemporary time of worship that we will be running monthly from September. It’s name comes from Psalm 23 v6: “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” (NIV).

It will be a time to dwell with God, with others, in worship. Each one will have a theme and will include some creative input for example using DVD, interview, drama.

There will also be time for prayer and ministry for people’s needs.

Celebration Nettleham Threshold is one of three congregations and several smaller groups

that are part of Threshold Church. From September we will be meeting all together once a month for a time of Celebration of our Christian faith where we worship God, learn more about His Word and pray for our communities, nation and world.

Children are well catered for too, as we have a fantastic team who provide a fun-filled programme of children’s activities at each Celebration.

Café Talk We’ve been running these now for several months. We start with the Café bit for about 15 minutes, where you can have refreshments, usually including tea, coffee and cake, and a chat with whoever is around. The Talk usually lasts about 40 minutes and is based on a theme for that series. All the talks are given by people with a story to tell about their life and faith and these have covered such things as dealing with financial problems, illness and disability, bereavement and worries about the future. We’ve also looked at how God’s presence can be seen in the world around us and in the universe beyond.

In September we start a new series called ‘Encounters: Collisions with the Unexpected’ where we will be hearing people’s stories about how they have had

National Police Dog Championships The National Police Dog Championships 2010 took place during the Open Day on Sunday 9 May 2010 at Police HQ in Nettleham.

The winner, Ralph, and his handler, were from Scotland.

dramatic and surprising experiences of God’s power which have changed their life.

Each Café Talk is normally followed up by an open discussion group on the following Tuesday in the Black Horse, where you can come and explore the subject and issues or bring your own perspective to discuss.

Social Events Being a Christian is about more than going to church. It’s also about how you live your life and love the people you ‘do life’ with, so it’s important to spend social time with friends and family too. So most months we have a social activity to which we can invite both friends and strangers.

In recent months we’ve had a family BBQ and games; a men’s afternoon at Front Line Combat laser tag; a ‘Chick Flic’ night for the ladies; and are planning a walk in the Wolds in the next few weeks.

Open-mic Nights ‘Open-mic’ nights at the Black Horse have proved to be very popular, attracting musicians from across the county. The evening is very friendly and informal, with musicians performing a wide variety of styles and songs. A small PA system is provided if you fancy having a go. If you are a musician, or just like listening to live music, then why not join us?

If any of these things sound interesting, why not come along and give it a try? You are very welcome to join us at any of these events and activities and you can be sure of a warm and friendly greeting.

RB Camera Club RB Camera Club has a Studio Group, and an outside photographic shoot was recently organised at Riseholme, near Nettleham.

Their model was Gordon McIntyre of the Lincoln Bowmen and he was photographed in a number of different archery poses and also in his fighting tackle. The images in this edition of Nettleham News were taken

by Ray Blake.

RB is also holding an outdoor evening of photography for members at Riseholme Hall (August) where there will be classic cars and models dressed as they would in the 1950s. A golden opportunity to capture some nostalgic images from the past!

Members also had a studio evening with Paul Otter of Red Pepper Studios in Gainsborough, where members learnt how to take portraits using the club’s lighting equipment.

More Memories of Bygone Days It was after I’d read the article: “In Conversation with Nurse Heath” in Nettleham News that I was so taken aback I decided to pay one of Tilly Franklin’s daughters, Rene Sullivan, a visit and I have to say, the conversation we had was extremely pleasurable, as we spent an hour or two reminiscing about our childhoods.

You may know that Tilly was the sister of my step-father, Albert Spencer. He was a countryman through and through, who, from the mid-forties into the fifties, ‘ran the line’ for the Nettleham football team whenever home games were played on ‘Bill Baileys’, which I regularly attended.

As for my mother, Ivy Spencer was a hard-working housewife; always being able to find something to do. I remember on one occasion, she assisted ‘Heathie’ during a ‘home confinement’ - which in those days was the norm.

I could reveal much more to you, but much of what I know has already been covered before, so I won’t go on, other than to show you the four old photographs here, which neither my brother nor I had ever set eyes on. For these pictures I sincerely thank Rene.

The two pictures shown at the top are of my mother and step-father with Rene standing in front of them. For those who can’t work out where they were taken, I’ll tell you - they were taken on ‘Green Lane’, approximately one third of the way up towards Deepdale Lane, overlooking what was then ‘Bob Parkers pasture, in the days before the lane was allowed to become the dark, narrow alleyway it is today.

The two bottom pictures show Albert and Tilly’s parents with Rene in the garden of the cottage at the rear of the White Hart, on the opposite side of the beck.

A Journey into Border History Come with me on a journey to one of the farthest corners of our land, where England meets Scotland, a major river meets the sea and the smoky blue mountains meet with the vast sky.

It also has a connection with Nettleham and Lincoln, as we shall see later.

We’re going to a remote area, now largely forgotten, but once the scene of a bustling commercial port and industrial manufacturing centre. Now a quiet and peaceful region, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a World Heritage Site, the vast tidal estuary of the Solway Firth in Cumbria has witnessed the dramatic ebb and flow of the tides of history throughout its long and turbulent past.

The natural phenomena of onshore prevailing winds, wide tidal range (exceeding 22 feet on spring tides) and rapid tidal flow, together with ever-changing narrow channels and treacherous sand-banks, have always made navigation of this estuary particularly difficult and extremely hazardous, with many ships coming to grief over the centuries.

Since the Mesolithic Period, the Solway Firth (thought to be derived from sulwath meaning ‘muddy ford’) has been a communication route and source of food for its inhabitants and, in times of war and border unrest, a natural line of defence.

The Romans first made their mark upon this landscape with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall, a mighty fortification stretching from Wallsend in the east, across to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. Marking the frontier between England and Scotland for centuries, sections of this formidable stone structure may still be seen today and a long-distance footpath traces its course across the country from coast to coast.

However, in the Solway region, very little quarried stone is readily available and the Romans initially used deep defensive ditches, backed by high earth ramparts and topped with timber palisades. Eventually replaced by stone structures, little remains of the fortifications today, most of the valuable stone having been removed for re-use in the construction of later buildings.

With local knowledge of the treacherous tides and ever-shifting sandbanks, there are several fording points across the wide river estuary.

These were frequently used by drovers taking herds of cattle to the London market, thus avoiding several toll bridges on the way.

Over the centuries, countless armies have also crossed the Solway here in the continuous battle for supremacy between the nations of England and Scotland. Throughout the Middle Ages, the border became a bloody and unstable battlefield from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries and the local residents, frequently brought close to starvation by the constant loss of their crops and livestock to conflicting armies, resorted to raiding or ‘reiving’ over the borders (hence “bereaved”) in order to survive.

This led to a very distinctive architectural style in the construction of churches in the area. A fine example of one of these fortified churches may be seen at Burgh-by-Sands, where the thick tower walls of St Michael’s church provided a safe refuge for the villagers (Burgh derived from Old English burh meaning ‘stronghold’). There were no large windows, just narrow ‘arrow slits’ and the only door into the tower was located inside the church, with a massively thick and heavy timber door, protected by a heavy iron grid, which could be locked and bolted from inside the tower. The top of the tower was 65

crenellated (as All Saints church in Nettleham) enabling defenders to take cover from arrows and other missiles projected by the raiders.

At the first alarm warning (frequently the church bells), local people would drive their livestock into the church, barricade the doors and take water and food supplies into the additional security of the tower. There is sometimes a small window high up on the inside wall of the tower of these churches, which enabled the defenders to view the interior of the building and assess when it was safe to descend once again.

Built with stone sourced from Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman fort of Aballava on which site it stands, this church was unusual in having two towers, one at each end of the building, only one of which survives today.

Readers familiar with the history of Nettleham will recall that Edward I was in residence here at the Bishops’ Palace, when he proclaimed his son, Edward, to be the first Prince of Wales on 7 February 1301. Six years later, “Edward Longshanks” as he was known, because of his notably tall stature (6 feet 2 inches), strong physique and long hair, was at the Solway Firth, encamped with his army on the south bank of the estuary, preparing to do battle against Robert the Bruce in yet another in a series of attempts to finally subdue the rebellious Scots. Although in sight of the Scottish coast, he contracted dysentry and died on 7 July 1307 at Burgh-by-Sands on Solway Moss.

Born on 17 June 1239 at Westminster Palace, Edward I was the first-born child of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence and was named in honour of his father’s favourite saint: the Saxon king Edward the Confessor. King of

The association with King Edward I is recalled by a beautiful stained glass window in the church and a new bronze statue of the king, unveiled by the Duke of Kent on 3 July 2007, is located adjacent to “The Greyhound” public house on the site where a new village green is being created.

A poignant and surprisingly modest sandstone memorial stands on the remote and desolate salt marshes nearby, marking the location where Edward I died. Originally erected in 1685 by the Duke of Norfolk, it was later rebuilt in 1803 by the Earl of Lonsdale.

Edward I, because of his doubt of the ability and commitment of his son to continue the ruthless campaign to conquer Scotland, is believed to have requested that the flesh be boiled from his bones so that they may be carried into battle by the army on every campaign, until total victory was achieved!

This legendary request was, however, not met and his body was taken to London to be buried in Westminster Abbey in the mausoleum of English Kings.

Edward’s wife, Eleanor of Castile had died in 1290 at Harby in Nottinghamshire and he ordered a series of stone monuments (‘Eleanor Crosses’) to be erected, marking the resting places of the funeral courtege on its journey to the capital for her burial in Westminster Abbey. One of these crosses was in Lincoln and the final one is located at Charing (Chere Reine) Cross in London.

England for 30 years and married twice with 16 children, the ‘Hammer of the Scots’ was finally broken and his son, on hearing of the death of his father, returned in haste and was proclaimed king in Carlisle on 8 July 1307.

Edward I’s body lay in state in the twelfth century church of St Michael, Burgh-by-Sands (Burgh pronounced ‘bruff’), before being transported to London for burial.

In later years, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the Solway Firth was destined to become the location for a major seaport, serving the west coast of England and Scotland, together with Ireland and even beyond as far as America.

It also became a centre for the smuggling of illicit salt, spirits, wine and tobacco.

The famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns, worked as an excise-man, patrolling the Scottish shore of the Solway. He lodged with a provost in the coastal town of Annan,

where he wrote “The Deil’s Awa wi’ th’ Excise Man” (see page 47). This town developed into an important centre for coastal and overseas shipping and was also a major ship-building centre, where many wooden-hulled sailing vessels were constructed over the years.

The transformation of the English side of the Solway really began when an enterprising group of businessmen decided to create a port on the south coast of the estuary at a place called Fisher’s Cross. Later renamed Port Carlisle, a canal was constructed and opened in 1823 from here to the city of Carlisle, a distance of over 11 miles. Vessels up to 100 tons were now able to navigate this waterway, which was 18ft wide with 8 locks, enabling goods and passengers arriving by sea to be transported directly to their destination in the heart of the city.

However, with the advent of the railways in the nineteenth century, in 1853, after only 30 years in use, the canal was drained and a railway track laid on the canal bed.

In 1869, a steel railway viaduct, designed by Sir James Brunlees, was constructed across the Solway Firth at nearby Bowness-by-Solway, but in the particularly severe winter of 1881 it was badly damaged when a large ice-floe, carried swiftly down the swollen river, collided with it. Over the following three years it underwent extensive repairs, re-opened and continued in use for passenger traffic until 1914, and for freight until 1921. One mile and 176 yards long, demolition began in 1934 and was completed in 1938.

Following publication of the government’s Transport Users’ Consultative Committee Report’s recommendations, the axe of Dr Beeching, implemented by Transport Minister Ernest Marples, fell on this and many other rural railways and the last train ran on Sunday 6 September 1964.

The original section of line from Drumburgh to Port Carlisle was finally closed in 1932.

Originally a small number of carriages were pulled by a steam locomotive, but as traffic progressively declined, eventually a single horse pulled a “dandy car”. The last journey of this quaint horse-drawn mode of transport took place on 4 April 1914. A passenger wrote of the journey: “Whilst the driver attended the receipt of fares, the engine left the metals [rails] and browsed contentedly on the grass”. Over many years the horse had become so accustomed to having rails on either side of it, that when it was later transferred to a parcel-van in Carlisle, it persisted in keeping to the centre of the tramway lines!

Since that time, the area has remained largely undeveloped and today is a peaceful, unspoilt and tranquil haven where life can be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. Here and there, if you know where to look, faint echos from the area’s turbulent past may still be discovered, but the magnificent landscape is now the haunt of thousands upon thousands of migrating birds, which join the resident population of the estuary, as they come and go with the changing seasons. Geese, ducks, waders and many others gather in huge flocks to feed on the rich supply of food and nutrients which the sand and mud of the estuary provides. Facing the Scottish hills of South Galloway, it is a paradise for many bird-watchers and the fluting call of the curlew across the salt marshes at dusk captures the very essence of this wilderness.

take parties of children who had never seen the sea from the poorer parts of Carlisle, to Silloth for a day, every summer from 1924 to 1936. Tea and buns were served in the ‘Sister Lillie Shelter’ on the West Beach and she was awarded the MBE for her good work in enabling thousands of Carlisle children to enjoy a day’s holiday at the seaside .

The sunsets are spectacular too, emphasizing the wonderful skies and providing spectacular opportunities for some wildlife and scenic photography. Otters have returned to the area after many years’ absence and you may even be lucky enough to see seals and dolphins in the fast-running tidal waters of the Solway.

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and was fitted with a hearing aid that allowed him to hear 100%.

The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor who said: “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.”

The gentleman replied: “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!” ❖ ❖ ❖ Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement home were sitting on a bench when one turns to the other and says: “Bill, I’m 83 years old now and I’m full of aches and pains. You’re about my age - how do you feel?”

Bill says: “I feel just like a newborn baby.”

“Really!? Like a newborn baby!?”

“Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants.” ❖ ❖ ❖ Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged and one day a student nurse came across an elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn’t need any help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let himself be wheeled to the elevator.

On the way down he was asked if his wife was meeting him.

“I don’t know,” he said. “She’s still upstairs in the bathroom, changing out of her hospital gown”. ❖ ❖ ❖

Go on - Smile!

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. The doctor tells them that they’re physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later, whilst watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. “Want anything while I’m in the kitchen?” he asks.

“Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?”

“Sure” “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?” she asks.

“No, I can remember it.”

“Well, I’d like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?”

He says: “I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.”

“I’d also like whipped cream. I’m certain you’ll forget that - write it down” she said.

Irritated, he says: “I don’t need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!”

After about 20 minutes, the man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.

“Where’s my toast?” ❖ ❖ ❖ The picture below shows two identical dolphins.

A recent scientific study revealed that although the dolphins are identical in every respect, a person under stress would find differences.

The more differences a person finds, the more stress that person is experiencing.

Look at the photograph and if you find more than one or two differences you need to go on holiday...

Three old gentlemen are out walking together.

The first one says: “Windy, isn’t it?”

The second one says: “No, it’s Thursday!”

The third one says: “So am I - let’s go for a beer.” ❖ ❖ ❖ A man was telling his neighbour: “I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me £2,000, but it’s wonderful, state of the art, just perfect.”

“Really” answered the neighbour. “What kind is it?”

“Twelve thirty”. ❖ ❖ ❖ An 85 year-old man, went to the doctor for a routine check-up.

A few days later, the doctor saw the man walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

The next time at the surgery, the doctor spoke to him and said: “You’re really doing great, aren’t you?”

He replied: “I’m just doing what you said last time, doctor: Get a hot mamma and be cheerful” The doctor said: “I didn’t say that at all ...

I said: “You’ve got a heart murmur be careful” ❖ ❖ ❖ A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlour and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool.

A few minutes later, after catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.

The waitress asked kindly: “Crushed nuts?”

“No” he replied “Arthritis.” ❖ ❖ ❖

Apart from the 1st and 5th, it was mostly cold until the 11th, with a frost, sometimes sharp, every morning from the 2nd to the 8th inclusive.

Some flakes of snow occurred early on the 2nd, which was generally a sunny day.

It was changeable until the 7th and quite cold until the 6th. There were heavy showers with spells of rain and hail on the 1st.

The weather was often settled with plenty of clear, sunny weather until the 14th, apart from the occasional shower or spell of rain. On the 14th heavy showers occurred, with hail, and one late shower deposited 4.9mm.

Within that period however, there were frequent cold starts and two days of significant rain.

The ground or soil was cracking by the 28th due to lack of rain and predominating warm settled weather.

Settled weather then returned until the 18th, becoming increasingly mild and windy.

The last two days were more changeable, with both days being breezy with rain later, the rain on the 30th being the heaviest and most substantial of this month.

It then became more unsettled, with strong winds, rain or showers and some sunshine.

From the 29th, it was much colder and even more unsettled, heavy rain depositing 12.5mm on that day, with squally showers of rain and hail, with cold winds dominating the last two days of the month.
