A warm welcome to the summer 2007 edition of Nettleham News. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it and find all the news, views and information of interest.

You will see that the Readers’ Letters page is conspicuously absent from this edition simply because, rather strangely, none were received!

The successful publication of the 2007/8 edition of Nettleham Now, has once again enabled a donation of £200 to be made to a local charity.

Actually, I did receive one relating to the yellow zig-zag school safety zone lines on All Saints Way, but the writer didn’t include his/her name or address details.

This is a shame, because clearly this person held strong views about the subject and wished to make a valid point. But I am unable to print anonymous letters and would take this opportunity to remind readers that any communications to Nettleham News must contain contact details, which will, of course, be withheld from publication if requested.

This year, it is not so much a donation as a sponsorship, with the Nettleham Woodland Trust being the beneficiary.

Trees in Nettleham

As you will see (on page 21), our Susie successfully completed the run and it was with great pleasure that she was presented with a cheque for £200.

25th Anniversary Believe it or not, next year, 2008, is the 25th anniversary of the first edition of Nettleham News which was published in spring 1983.

It’s come a long way since then - the first edition comprising just nine typewritten A4 sheets printed in black and stapled together by hand!

I am proud to have been associated with the magazine since it was first conceived in the late autumn of 1982, first as the graphic designer and then, in later years, as both Editor and designer.

It is a demanding, but nevertheless very enjoyable and satisfying task to put together each edition for publication and I am always impressed by the quantity and variety of material which is contributed by the people of Nettleham for inclusion in the magazine.

It is this that makes Nettleham News what it is, and we should also not forget all the businesses whose advertisements generate the funds to finance its production every year. Some of the advertisers with us today were actually in the very first edition way back in 1983!

I like to think that perhaps in hundreds of years’ time someone will stumble upon a pile of Nettleham News hidden away in the corner of an attic somewhere - it will be a fascinating source of information about our village and the people who lived, loved and worked here!

So if you have any ideas about things you would like to see in the magazine for our Silver Anniversary Year, please get in touch, I would be delighted to hear from you.

A strong tree theme has emerged in this edition of the magazine and on several pages you will find references to trees in and around our village in many different contexts. This is a very good thing as more people come to realise the great amenity value which trees can bring to the local environment.

Particularly interesting is the ‘Short History of Woods Around Nettleham’ by Chris Williams (pages 62/63) which invites readers to offer their memories, thoughts, photographs and ideas on this subject.

Any historic records will be passed on to the Nettleham Heritage Association.

Page Pictures There is an intriguing item from Nettleham Library in this edition of the magazine some photographs (presumably used as bookmarks) have been inadvertently left inside books over the years.

Do you recognise anyone? If so, you have until the end of June to collect them (see page 55).

Formed in 2006, this enthusiastic group is endeavouring to create new community woodland around our village - a very commendable endeavour and one which must surely meet with support from everyone in the village.

The sponsorship was for Susie Mendel, the Secretary of the Trust, who undertook to run the Lincoln 10k Run on behalf of the group and Nettleham Now sponsored her for £20 per kilometre.

If anyone else is interested in fundraising for the Nettleham Woodland Trust, or who perhaps would like to make a donation or leave a bequest in their will, then the group would be delighted to hear from you - the Chairman is Ian Benford, on 822475.

Gardeners’ Association Show The annual Nettleham Gardeners’ Association show takes place in the Village Hall on Saturday 8 September 2007.

Do enter something in this wonderful village event (the schedule appears on pages 64/65). Don’t worry that your entries won’t be good enough - this isn’t the Chelsea Flower Show you know!

Please make sure you read the rules for entry, particularly in the Wine Classes.

Nettleham Parish Council News The Council continues to work hard on behalf of the residents of Nettleham addressing the concerns that local people have expressed.

Parking in Church Street The Council has continued in its efforts to relieve the problems caused by parking along Church Street and around the Green.

The Area Surveyor has now drawn up a scheme to include limited waiting and waiting restrictions in Church Street. The restrictions would limit where cars can park, together with the introduction of one hour parking bays, with no return within two hours.

The scheme also included the introduction of a clearway for the bus stop (see pages 34/35).

The council were pleased to welcome a number of residents to the meeting, who raised questions regarding this matter. The council has agreed to move forward on this proposal and a period of public consultation will now begin (see pages 34/35).

The Parish Plan Committee has completed the draft of the plan and a successful event was held in the Small Hall of the Old School for public reaction to the proposals contained in the plan. The Parish Council is to consider the final plan, before its publication, at a special meeting on 24 May at Mulsanne Park (see pages 9-11).

Netteham Beck The Council has been considering improving the amenity of the Beck, however, following consideration and consultation with a member of the Environment Agency, such a scheme has proved too costly to implement at the current time. The group of residents who recently completed a Wildlife Survey for the village have been approached to see if they have any ideas.

Parish Precept League Table The members of the Parish Council were delighted to discover that Nettleham is no longer at the top of the comparative league table of average Band D property council precept payments, which is produced

by West Lindsey District Council.

For many years now, Nettleham has topped the table, but for this year we have dropped to third place.

QUALITY COUNCIL

Old School Car Park and Parish Office

Following the agreement of the Parish Council to replace the surfacing of the car park at the Old School the Council has now agreed a scheme to resurface the car park in block paving. The work will hopefully take place during the summer holiday period.

2007 Nettleham Carnival will take place this year on Saturday 14 July on The Green from around 2.00pm onwards.

The theme for this year’s Carnival Procession is “Musicals”, so there is lots of scope for some imaginative and colourful costumes and decorations for the floats and walking groups which will form the Carnival Procession, as it takes the usual route around the village streets.

The Carnival Team have been busy behind the scenes to ensure that everyone has a wonderful time on the day, so do please come along and support this annual village event. We could really do with some additional help on the day, so if you are around, would you consider assisting in setting up the stalls (maybe even running one) or generally lending a hand? Please contact the Chairman of the Carnival team, Phil McGuiness on 822315 if you are able to assist in any way.

The Rev Jenny Rowley will be officially opening the Carnival this year (so it should be good weather!) and there will be all your favourite traditional games and stalls on The Green, together with refreshments and drinks.

This is a very special day for Nettleham the only annual event when all the people, of the village, young and old (and a lot of visitors too) come together to enjoy themselves, have a really good time and raise money for many good causes at the same time.

There is also an art exhibition at the Old School where paintings by the Nettleham Art Group will be on display (and many for sale). (See the Nettleham Noticeboard on page 3).

New Village Footpaths Leaflets Firstly, the summer walk around the village paths will be held on Friday 13 July 2007. Anyone interested in coming along, please meet on The Green for 7.00pm.

An additional leaflet, featuring the footpaths, fieldpaths and bridleways in and around the village of Nettleham is currently in the process of creation and will be available later this year.

The two leaflets, enclosed with this edition of Nettleham News, are for walks around Nettleham, Scothern and Dunholme. They have been produced by Lincolnshire County Council, who have worked with the footpath committees of the three villages.

The leaflets have been produced in the same format as the Village Heritage Walk recently produced by Nigel Kingston, so they all go well together.

The County Council have produced many Lincolnshire walks in this same format and copies can be obtained from the Library or the Tourist Information Office, as well as the Council Offices.

We all hope you will enjoy the walks, but if you encounter any problems when walking, please let the footpath committee know through the Parish Council.

New Bishops’ Palace Sign Installed On Friday 27 April, a new sign for the Bishops’ Palace site was installed on High Street, adjacent to the Methodist Church.

This has been made possible by an initial idea of Dr Peter Atkins, a local medical doctor, and Rev Gordon Sleight, the village’s previous vicar.

The narrative was primarily the work of Nigel, again with the help of Pat and Barbara. The funding was provided by West Lindsey District Council from the Local Councillor Initiative Fund, applied for

by Pat on behalf of Alf Frith, committee

member and West Lindsey District Councillor. The final piece of the jigsaw was provided by Venture Signs Limited of Westminster Road Industrial Estate, Lincoln, who manufactured and installed our lovely new sign.

They gathered a group around them interested in promoting the heritage of our village and this developed into the Nettleham Heritage Association. Gordon has since retired and moved to Scotland, however Peter has stayed in the village and is currently Chairman of the fledgling Association.

This sign is a result of work by others in the group. Nigel Kingston, committee member, produced the beautiful picture, based partly on a model made by John Blakeley, another resident of the village, and partly on additional historical sources researched by Pat Gregory, Secretary of the Association, and Barbara Taylor, committee member, both local historians.

Parish Plan Progress Report The Parish Plan Steering Committee has now completed a Plan for the community covering the next 10 years. This plan seeks to address the needs and desires identified in the questionnaire completed last year and the various public consultations, which have also occurred over the last 18 months (see pages 10/11).

Presentation of the Plan This Plan has been presented to the Parish Council for consideration and endorsement.

In addition, it was felt that the plan should be shown to the community prior to finalisation and adoption. To this end the Small Hall in the Old School was occupied on 28-29 April in the afternoon, with displays showing the Plan.

There was also a slide show running to give some background to interested visitors as to the whole process. Visitors were able to indicate their opinion of the proposals simply by sticking different coloured spots against each of the ideas proposed to indicate whether they were in favour or not.

We had a reasonably good attendance with the total number through the doors exceeding 120 people over the total 4 hour period.

We also had a senior officer from Community Lincs to observe, give help and advice, and show plans produced by other communities.

The results of the presentation indicated in most cases that the community agreed with the proposed plans. The only proposal rejected, was to develop a master plan to consider future controlled development opportunities on part of the Police field in line with village needs. Clearly there were strongly held feelings that there should be no development in that area.

However, there was support for using the sports field as an overflow field for training purposes to ease the pressure at Mulsanne. There was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm for improving wildlife and the visual environment of the village.

Traffic and parking is always an emotive issue, which we share with many other communities to judge by the various Parish Plans that I have seen. Various schemes were presented to try to ease our particular situation, including restricted parking and a one-way system. These proposals met broad agreement with no more that 14% voting against any single measure and in most cases the number against was less than 10%.

We also had strong support for a Farmers’ Market and other retail businesses being encouraged to locate here. There was also a desire to encourage other local employment to enable people to live and work in the village and thereby ease pollution and congestion generally, as well as keep this village a vibrant place with a balanced population.

A massive 87% of those expressing an opinion were in favour of the Parish acquiring more land in the Parish for the benefit of the community.

94% wanted the Parish to have use of the Old Bishops Palace Field, and that it should be taken if possible into Parish ownership for the benefit of the community. We also had a lot of support for more woodland and generally improving the local environment.

Housing will prove to be a time bomb unless we take action now to defuse it. In common with the rest of the country we have an ageing population. However we have twice the number of people over 50 than the national average.

A rough estimate puts 400 people over 75 and 1,200 over retirement age, so in 10 years many more people will not be able to look after themselves and will need a degree of nursing care. It is right to help our older generation who want to continue to live in this community with their friends and relatives. There was strong support to take action on this matter and this will begin with a detailed housing needs assessment for the community looking at current and anticipated needs over the next 10 years.

As people move to other accommodation such as sheltered accommodation or nursing homes, this will inevitably free up existing housing for new occupiers from inside the community and that increased movement might help satisfy the desire for affordable homes.

The Next Stage The Plan will now be amended in line with the feedback gained from this latest consultation.

The Parish Council are having a special meeting in May just to discuss the issues raised and the proposed solutions presented in the plan.

At that point the plan will either be adopted and given the full weight of the council, or certain elements may be judged as impractical or needing further work, to be reconsidered by the steering committee. The final agreed plan will be published and circulated, with the Autumn edition of Nettleham News.

Implementation Working groups to implement the Plan will be set up, comprising volunteers and Parish Councillors. Progress will be reported back to the Parish Council on a regular basis. In fact action has already commenced as a result of the various consultations and progress will be reported back on the various issues in future editions of Nettleham News.

RESULTS FROM PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON NETTLEHAM On the weekend of Saturday/Sunday 28/29 April 2007, details of the Nettleham Parish Plan were on display in the Old School and members of the public were invited to come and make their final assessment of the proposals.

This was the last in a series of public consultations over the past few months, which have resulted in a number of proposals grouped under five headings:

Nettleham Parish Co 1 April 2006 I would like to submit to the Council for consideration the Annual Report for the period 1 April 2006 - 31 March 2007, being my first report to the Council as Chairman. The year has once again been an extremely busy one for the Parish Council and I summarise below the main issues that have been, or are in the course of, being addressed.

A meeting was also called at the request of the Area Highways Surveyor to discuss the parking problems at Nettleham Heath and as a result of that and the damage to the adjacent highway verge, the Area Surveyor is currently preparing a scheme for improvement to the situation, which will be submitted to the Parish Council for their consideration.

Highway Matters

There has clearly been progress in relation to the improvement of the highways within the village, although in certain areas there still remains a question of outstanding maintenance work required. However, it was pleasing to note that the most serious areas requiring attention have been addressed; these principally relate to Deepdale Lane, the top of Washdyke Lane and parts of East Street.

The Parish Council’s website continues to be improved and the hosting of the site has now been taken over by the Lincolnshire County Council, who will assist us to maintain and update it. It is undoubtedly one of the best websites of Town & Parish Councils in the country and this has been demonstrated by the awards that have been made to us by the National Association of Councils.

In addition, a new footpath has been constructed between Washdyke Lane and the A46, which is well used by walkers generally.

Nettleham News continues to be published on the website and the site also contains details of the various local footpaths.

Traffic Matters

Safety Zone: Nettleham Infant School

The Council received several complaints regarding the congestion and parking situation in Church Street/The Green and as a consequence of these complaints, the Council called a meeting of the local traders in order to canvas their views and at the same time inviting possible suggestions for improving such congestion. It was clear from these discussions that a number of the available parking spaces in Church Street are occupied between 9.00am 6.00pm by vehicles belonging to the owners/ employees of the traders/businesses.

Summer of last year saw the introduction of the school safety zone in order to ease and prevent traffic congestion at school entry and deparrure times. It was intended that the zone only operates at these times, but unfortunately incorrect signs were erected by the County Council, but those are shortly to be replaced confirming the limitations of the zone as mentioned above.

In consequence the Parish Council arranged for 6 spaces to be made available for such vehicles within the Co-operative Society car park.

The Co-operative Society were only too pleased to assist us in resolving this problem and the Parish Council are very grateful for their assistance in this matter.

However, regrettably in the event this facility did not prove a satisfactory solution to the problem and as a result the Parish Council arranged for a traffic survey to be undertaken, which again highlighted and affirmed their original view regarding the problem. Following subsequent discussions with the Area Highways Surveyor for the County Council, a draft scheme that would impose parking restriction in the centre of the village will be submitted to the Parish Council during the course of the next month for their consideration. In the event of the Parish Council supporting the scheme in principle, a public meeting will be called to canvas the views of residents and traders in relation to the proposed scheme, following which a final decision will be made by the Parish Council on whether or not to request the County Council to implement the same.

New Parish Councillors The Council welcomed Mr Giles McNeill and Mrs Val Darbyshire to its membership last year, both of whom have made a valuable contribution to the work of the Council.

Old School Car Park In February of this year, the Parish Council gave approval to works being carried out to its car park, which is in a very poor condition.

As a result, the car park will be completely re-surfaced with block paving. Further details of this will be published in next year’s report of the Parish Council.

Land Acquisition Members will recall that Pickwell’s Farm was advertised for sale in individual lots and as a result of the public notices that appeared with regard to the proposed sale, a special meeting of the Parish Council was called to discuss the possibility of purchasing an area which may be suitable for amenity and sport. The Parish Council considered three specific lots but focused on to one in particular, in respect of which it submitted a substantial offer. In the event, the vendors decided to sell the farm as a single entity and in consequence our bid was 14

unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the Parish Council remains firmly committed to, if possible, acquiring additional land within the Parish for amenity, recreation and sporting purposes.

In this connection, the Council will be giving further consideration to the possibility of acquiring land either at the Police HQ or to the west of its existing holding at Mulsanne Park (see Mulsanne park on opposite page).

Recycling The originally somewhat complicated procedure for recycling waste and general refuse has been the subject of considerable discussions by the Parish Council and with the District Council.

As a result of the Parish Council’s representations, it is believed that the service with regard to recycling has improved, in particular with regard to the disposal of cardboard.

Speed Restriction: A46 The Council commented on the speed restriction, which was imposed by the County Council on the A46, relating to the section past Nettleham Heath. The Parish Council felt that this restriction should have been applied between the A46 roundabout and the Centurion garage. However, the County Council regrettably did not see fit to amend its original proposals for the introduction of this speed limit.

Speeding: Washdyke Lane, Scothern Road and Deepdale Lane Following representations regarding alleged speeding on these approach roads, the County Council have agreed, in conjunction with the Road Safety Partnership in Lincolnshire, to introduce speed monitors for limited periods of time as soon as practicable. Following the monitoring survey, a report will be submitted to the Parish Council who will consider the matter further in relation to what, if any, action is required in order to address the problem.

Best Kept Village Competition Last year the village was placed a very close second in the best kept village competition, which represents another wonderful achievement - although we can do better!

The Parish Council will, of course, continue to submit entries for this competition in the current and future years.

Police Matters The Parish Council has kept in regular contact with the Police representatives in the village.

The Parish Council received a report at several of its meetings on crime issues in the village and details of the action taken by the Police to arrest or warn offenders.

uncil Annual Report 31 March 2007 a group known as Key Individual Network (KIN), which is a group of various Parish Council representatives and others who advise the main Police Community Panel of issues that need consideration and addressing in their respective areas. The Police are in turn obliged to look into any matters raised by the Police Community Panel. The Parish Council has one representative on the local KIN. Village Plan Although the Parish Plan Committee is independent of the Parish Council, we do receive regular reports as to its progress. In particular, the Parish Council have been provided with a summary of the analysis which followed on from the results obtained from the village plan questionnaire that was distributed last summer to every household in the parish.

It should be noted at this stage that one of the principal issues that emerged from the foregoing analysis is the need, both now and in the future, for accommodation for the elderly, especially since 60% of the current residents in the village are over the age of 50. Accordingly, this becomes an urgent matter for consideration within the Structure and Review Plans, which are the responsibility of the District and County Councils.

Another important issue that arises from the reply to those questionnaires was the general support for the acquisition - in the event of it becoming available - of the Bishop’s Palace site and indeed any other areas of land for amenity/ recreation in the village. In consequence, the Parish Council will continue to monitor the availability of land for leisure purposes within the village during the coming year and where appropriate, the Parish Council will give serious consideration to acquiring additional land for this purpose, the need for which it has previously acknowledged (see Land Acquisition on opposite page).

Donations The Parish Council made a donation of £150 to LIVES in Nettleham in recognition of the excellent work that it undertakes in the village.

Bus Services The Parish Council, following discussions, requested Stagecoach to consider extending their service in the evenings. As a result of this, an additional service was introduced commencing in January of this year, departing at 18.20 hours from Lincoln to Welton.

The Council hopes that residents will support this service as otherwise it will be lost.

CCTV The Parish Council will shortly be giving consideration to the possibility of introducing CCTV cameras at key locations in the village.

Dog Fouling

Mulsanne Park

Sadly this issue has become more prominent in the village over the last year and several complaints have been made to the Parish Council concerning the same, in particular the condition of the playing areas and footpaths within the village.

The Parish Council would like to thank Mr John Dingley who acted as Manager of the Sportsfield for a number of years, but who has recently stepped down from this role. In that capacity John did an excellent job on behalf of the Parish Council.

The problem was further highlighted during the Village Inspections that are periodically undertaken by members of the Parish Council’s Property Committee. It seems that not all dog owners are as responsible as one might expect.

The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 empowers the Parish Council to impose dog control orders in respect of specific areas of its parish and as a result of this the Parish Council will shortly be giving consideration to the question of the possible introduction of such orders in the foreseeable future.

The Parish Council continues to nominate representatives on to the Users’ Committee, which meets at regular intervals to discuss matters relating to the management of the facility. The Parish Council’s Property Committee in turn continues to determine the rents that are payable by the User Clubs.

In the meantime, it has made arrangements with West Lindsey District Council for their Dog Control Officers to visit the village at unspecified hours in order to monitor the situation.

In addition, appropriate publicity to this issue was given in the Spring 2007 Edition of Nettleham News. Let’s hope that all dog owners heed the warnings and thereby avoid the need for more stringent controls.

Planning permission was granted by West Lindsey District Council in respect of land situated to the west of the present sportsfield, for the relocation of the existing cricket and/or football pitches. This land is currently owned by the Church Commissioners, but the Parish Council will be exploring the possibility of acquiring the same (see Land Acquisition on opposite page).

In addition, planning permission was granted

by West Lindsey District Council for the construction of a cricket scorebox; the Cricket Club is hoping to be in a position to have the work undertaken this summer.

Budget Estimates for 2007/8

Staff Matters

The Parish Council considered its precept estimates for the Financial Year 2007/8 in November last year and fixed a precept of £73,000, which had the effect of keeping it at last year’s level.

Following the resignation of the handyman, the Council have just appointed Mr Peter Malone as Facilities Assistant. He will carry out tasks previously undertaken by the handyman, as well as such additional ones that are determined by the Parish Council concerning maintenance and cleanliness/hygiene in the village.

It was further agreed to seek reimbursement of expenditure over income in relation to the Parish Council’s cemetery - amounting to £1,400 from the District Council.

Planning Matters During the last Financial Year 36 planning permissions and 4 refusals were granted by the District Council, relating to properties and land within the parish boundary. The Parish Council which is a statutory consultee on such matters made appropriate comments in relation to the same.

The Council thanks Mr Ralph Barker and Mrs Jackie Halson for their continuing work on our behalf.

On behalf of the Clerk and indeed the Council, I would also like to record our thanks to Mr Allen Page the Admin Officer who assists the Clerk in many of the duties that the Council has to perform.

Moreover, I would, on behalf of the Parish Council, like to record our sincere thanks to Mr David Dubut, our Clerk for his continuing devotion to the work of the Council.

Environmental Matters The Parish Council welcomed the enthusiasm from, in particular, two local residents who, along with a group of other residents, are undertaking environmental and wildlife projects within the village. As a result of this, the group has given considerable assistance with such projects in the village, in particular Vicar’s Wood. The work being undertaken by Bill Ball and Ian Benford, who lead the group, is greatly appreciated.

At a recent meeting of the Community Panel it was decided that Nettleham was relatively crime free, and other areas that are covered by the Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team need more urgent attention. This does not mean that Nettleham will be ignored! We are aware there are a number of issues still active in Nettleham, eg parking and speeding, and these will be addressed as usual. However, the two priorities that were identified by the CP were in Sudbrooke and Cherry Willingham. Over the past few months these two areas saw a marked increase in the number of incidents involving drunken youths and acts of vandalism and abuse.

We have been addressing these issues over the past twelve weeks and can now report a significant drop in reported incidents in these areas. This is good news for both Sudbrooke and Cherry Willingham, and is a great example of how effective teamwork can be. The next Community Panel meeting is 6 June 2007, where new issues will be discussed and new priorities decided.

The Key Individual Network (KIN) Group is also meeting regularly to discuss local issues. The group has been formed using a member of the Parish Council from each village which the Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team covers. They meet just prior to each Community Panel meeting, and each member has an opportunity to discuss issues and priorities that are relevant to their village, which are then passed on to the CP to consider. The Nettleham representative is Parish Councillor Giles McNeill, so if you have an issue you would like raised at the meeting please contact Giles at the Parish Council.

Welcome to the Summer 2007 edition of Police News. Crime in the Nettleham area remains low, with very little happening at present. We get occasional problems with youths drinking alcohol in the village, and evidence of cannabis abuse in the Mulsanne Park area, but it is very sporadic and occasional. However, to make sure we keep to the problems to an absolute minimum, a list of likely gathering points has been compiled and is patrolled on a regular basis. This is usually in the evenings, but during school holidays this problem can occur at any time of the day, and patrols are adjusted accordingly.

We are all enjoying the nicer weather and the sunshine. Unfortunately, this means that we generally relax and are perhaps less vigilant in looking after our property.

We tend to leave things around that we would otherwise lock away, and these are left visible to any would-be thief! It does not take many moments to load items into a vehicle and drive away, so please continue to be careful about security and make sure windows and doors are locked when you go out, and alarms are set if you have one. Items left in vehicles on display can also become targets. I wrote about this last year, and as I walk around the villages, I am still seeing cars with windows and doors open and keys left in the ignition.

We have also had a couple of instances recently when Sat Nav’s were stolen from vehicles in Sudbrooke. They are this month’s ‘must have’ and are very much sought after - the less scrupulous persons like to obtain them without laying out the cash! Typically, a thief will look into a vehicle to see whether there is any 18

evidence that a Sat Nav may be present.

Clues that may be left are docking stations left in place, the actual Sat Nav left in a place where it can be seen, connector leads left, and they will also look for the small circular marks left on a windscreen to indicate a Sat Nav has been stuck there in the past. These clues are all the incentive a thief will need to break in to your car to see what you have. If you have a Sat Nav, please remove any trace of it when you park up, including from your windscreen.

It only takes a few seconds to wipe the window, and it may just save you a few hundred pounds.

Please heed our advice and prevent yourselves from becoming victims of crime.

We cannot stress enough the importance of securing all your valuables out of sight (or better still, don’t leave items in the car at all) to prevent you becoming another crime statistic.

Only a small number of the Boy Racer fraternity exist in the locality and have been mentioned previously. The main areas of activity are Cherry Willingham, Fiskerton, and occasionally Nettleham. The behaviour usually consists of revving engines, driving at speed in quiet areas, and also riding on pavements. We can deal with this by way of an official warning under S.59 Police Reform Act. This is something that I have mentioned previously and fortunately is only an occasional problem here in Nettleham, but if you are being consistently annoyed by a driver who is deliberately revving an engine regularly, wheel spinning, or driving in a dangerous manner, then do please contact me.

In relation to anti-social behaviour, we are making regular visits to the areas that have been identified as suffering the most.

ASB is not on the scale that it is in Lincoln, but for a small community it can have a big effect and we are looking at ways in which to reduce it.

One of those ways is to actually speak to the youths to find out why they do what they do. The most common answer is that they are bored due to the lack of facilities within the village, and the lack of places for them to go. We have spoken to a number of local youths already, but we’re

I have been asked by several residents to mention dogs and their mess. When walking your dog, could you make sure that your dog does not deposit his ‘parcels’ on someone’s lawn or driveway. This seems to be happening on a regular basis in some areas, and it’s not very nice for the house owner having to clear up this mess, or, in some cases, have it trodden into the house on the feet of their children who haven’t noticed it.

Please be considerate to other people, and put your doggy deposits in the proper bins or take it home and dispose of it properly.

On my walks around the villages, parks and lanes, I have seen deposits in bags hanging from the hedges! Why bother to put it into a bag and then not dispose of it properly?

Again, we can and will issue Fixed Penalty Notices for this offence. Hopefully it will be a while before I have to mention this subject again.

Whilst on the subject of dogs, could I again mention keeping your dog under control? We have had a couple of instances recently when dogs have bitten someone.

Dogs need to be on a lead because they can easily be startled by something unforeseen and can react in many different and unexpected ways. Having an obedient dog walking at the side of you along the pavement or in a park area without a lead

will not suffice. Also a small child taking a large dog for a walk is not a good idea the person holding the dog must be able to hold and control the animal if it is becoming difficult.

Nettleham Trees The third article of this series on the trees of Nettleham focuses on two trees located adjacent to the lake in the Lincolnshire Police HQ grounds.

We have all strolled along The Scotches footpath through the pleasant strip of woodland leading to the lake and perhaps sat on one of the benches there to enjoy the tranquil waterside scene. It’s a beautiful and peaceful setting in which to while away a few minutes and escape from the stresses of everyday life.

But as you sit there day-dreaming, have you ever wondered what the two large trees are that seem to be evergreen conifers, and yet, come autumn, the rich feathery green foliage turns to a beautiful shade of russet brown?

And furthermore, they are actually standing in the water - surely no ordinary conifer could withstand having its roots in permanently wet ground all the time?

Well, both the trees are Swamp Cypresses (Taxodium distichum) native to the southern United States in the swamps, ponds and river-banks of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains and the Mississippi Valley. Broadly conical in shape it is a graceful tree which can grow to 120ft in height and more.

Since the tree frequently grows in wet or flooded ground, to give the roots access to air when they are underwater, the tree eventually develops spongy ‘knees’, buttresses, or pneumatophores. The bark is pale reddish-brown, stringy and with shallow, vertical spiralled fissures.

It is a deciduous tree with pale green feathery foliage when newly-emerged in the spring. The needle-like leaves are on long shoots and arranged alternately along the branch. The female cones are round in shape, purplish in colour and around 3cm in diameter.

The timber from these trees is resistant to rot and was a popular material in construction work prior to the introduction of modern building materials.

It was first introduced to the UK by John Tradescant around 1640 and is not very common in this country.

All other committee members remain unchanged The Village Hall is an extremely well-used and valued community facility, housing several clubs and societies and a daily playgroup, and is also available to book for functions, parties or any community event, etc (book early to avoid disappointment!)

The committee is in place to organise maintenance, etc, and to keep the hall viable for use by all. This is done mainly by a monthly committee meeting to keep things ‘ticking along’ and to try to organise new events for the benefit and entertainment of the village.

In order to successfully continue, and for the hall to remain viable we need new committee members, to continue our work and bring new ideas and impetus.

We would like to hear from people in all sections of our village community, so that we can not only continue the running of this community focal point, but to improve it, so that it remains a cornerstone of village life. All this for probably only a couple of hours’ commitment a month!

Please get in touch if you can help, it’s really important for the village to keep the hall not just for now, but for all those currently growing up in our community.

It’s possible that some villagers may not know that it is the Village Hall (via a Carnival Committee) that organises and holds the annual Nettleham Carnival on the village green (this year’s will be on Saturday 14th July).

We need more helpers on the day to set up stalls, maybe run one, or just generally lend a hand to guarantee that this enjoyable family event can continue. It is important to the village and its residents that this traditional Carnival continues, so if you’re going to be around on the day please let us know, we would be really grateful for all help offered.

We are currently applying for a Lottery Grant in order for us to carry out some upgrading work on the hall, the most imperative being the need for a new roof.

To help us in our bid, a questionnaire was compiled and all the responses will be used to show the hall usage and importance to the village of this facility. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill in and return the questionnaire and also to thank the Co-op for providing a collection point for the returns.

Hall users may have noticed that the pay phone that was in the foyer has been removed. The committee took the decision to have it removed as it was costing the hall over £200 a year in rent and in this age of the mobile phone, usage has declined so much over the last couple of years that any takings to offset the rental were negligible. We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused and remind everyone that the listed telephone number for the hall is no longer valid.

Nettleham Ladies Club Blue skies and warm weather once again attracted a wonderful crowd of supporters and many valiant helpers at the Ladies Club Spring Fayre on Saturday 28 April 2007.

In aid of the St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice, the Fayre was officially opened by Michelle Rollinson, Clinical Nurse in Charge, and so far has raised the spendid total of £1,600.00 for the Hospice.

Ron Harrison 19 April 1923 - 20 February 2007 It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Ron Harrison on Tuesday 20 February 2007, aged 84.

Born in Kingston upon Hull, Ron, and his wife Eileen, were regular members of the congregation at All Saints church in Nettleham and, amongst other artefacts, donated the oak cross behind the altar.

The funeral service was held at All Saints on Monday 5 March 2007 and the church was overflowing with people wishing to remember this kind and gentle man.

On the evening of the same day, a half-muffled Quarter Peal of Grandsire Doubles was rung to celebrate Ron’s lifetime joy in bell ringing.

This was a fitting tribute to a man who had given so much to the village over the years. Both Ron and Eileen loved the community spirit which was evident both in the church and the village in general and to which they have both contributed so gladly and willingly.

Having worked on the railways all his life in a number of different jobs and locations, he and Eileen retired to live in a bungalow on Nettleham Fields.

I first met Ron when my wife Sheila and I decided to learn bell ringing. He was so very patient and understanding in helping us to learn the basic techniques of what was a totally new experience for us.

Ron was a stalwart member of the Nettleham church bell ringing team and was steeple keeper for the church for many years. In this capacity he was responsible for the regular maintenance of the church clock and the bells. The photograph shows Ron supervising the return of the church bells to Nettleham following renovation in October 2000.

We, together with many people in the village, will remember him with great fondness and appreciation.

A Summer Message What is it about this time of year? - the sun is shining (just about!), birds are singing, ducks are paddling (or just sitting in the middle of the road!) and people are coming out to enjoy it all.

At this time of year we are looking forward to lots of times when we can get together - barbecues, drinks on the lawn, scouts making breakfast, the Carnival, or just sitting with friends on the grass or the bench chatting and watching the world go by…all opportunities to get together with other people, and enjoy the company of friends and neighbours in this beautiful village we are privileged to call home.

Whoever we are and whatever our circumstances, a festival spirit is something we all need to nurture. Perhaps it takes effort - and help - to get out to a local event, but we usually find that the effort is worth it.

Every so often someone points out that modern lifestyles are becoming more and more individual and private. More people live alone or are separated from close family by choice or by circumstance people are finding other patterns of family life, not just the traditional 2 parents with 2.4 children.

The writer of the letter to the Hebrews encourages us “Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together… but encouraging one another…”

What is true in our daily lives is also true in our spiritual lives. Sometimes people say: “I don’t need to come to church to be a Christian.” That’s like saying you don’t need other people to be a human being.

On one level, that’s right - being alone doesn’t make us less of a human being.

And God loves and accepts us just as we are, and we can respond to that love, claim that love for ourselves and commit ourselves to follow Christ in whatever situation we find ourselves - alone or in company.

But if we want to grow as human beings, to develop as children of God and enjoy the love and the fullness of life he gives us, we need each other. So at this time of year, as we meet together to have fun, to enjoy the company of others, let’s remember that if we are to grow spiritually and enjoy that abundant life which God promises, our part is to seek out others treading the same path, and join them.

Some people know that, for various reasons, it is difficult to get out of the house. Others experience the isolation of lives surrounded by people but untouched by friends.

SAVE LIVES FESTIVAL DAY 2007

Many of you will no doubt have heard of the sudden death of our Co-ordinator Kay Horner, who was one of the founder members of the Nettleham LIVES First Responders.

Kay was an active, enthusiastic and caring member of the group who took a leading role in training, recruitment and fundraising. Last year alone she raised over £900 towards our training equipment.

She, together with other members of the group, went on to train to a higher, intermediate level that allowed her to respond to the more serious call-outs, including road traffic accidents.

Kay was a linchpin in the group and latterly put in a great deal of time and effort into Bystander Training within the community, both locally and county wide.

Bystander Training teaches basic life support techniques to both the young and old in the community.

Nettleham residents will probably have seen Kay in many LIVES situations around the village, responding, recruiting and fundraising. Last year it was her idea to have a balloon race to compliment our stall at the village carnival and it proved to be a great success.

Plans are already under way to have another balloon race at this year’s Carnival in July, but I’m sure on this occasion, as the balloons are released from the village green, our thoughts will be of Kay and her family.

DR McPARLAND We would like to inform Dr McParland’s patients that she is now on maternity leave. Dr McParland is scheduled to return in January to take up her duties.

Her surgery sessions will be covered by Dr S J Bell and Dr Indira Jairam until 1 September 2007, and then by Dr O Hefni until the end of the year.

This means that two Doctors every Monday will be triaging patient telephone calls when all routine appointments have been allocated.

The Doctor will then ring the patient back and either deal with the problem over the telephone, or give an appointment if he/she feels it is necessary.

This should help alleviate patients having to make a second telephone call to obtain an appointment. All patients will be dealt with that day.

The Mabel Briggs Memorial It was with the greatest pleasure that I accepted an invitation to the 25th Anniversary Lunch of the Mabel Briggs Memorial Luncheon Club held on Thursday 8 March 2007.

I have been involved with the club as a voluntary helper for 21 years, but had never actually had a full meal, so it really was a pleasure to sit down as a guest!

The cooks and helpers had really looked forward to this particular anniversary and much planning had gone into it - the menu (very important), table decorations, wine, and also to remember to invite some of the people who had been involved in setting up the Luncheon Club in 1982.

It was a delight to see how the room was decorated - lots of balloons, flowers on the tables, colourful serviettes and tablecloths, everywhere you looked around the room it was 25th Anniversary!

I was offered a glass of wine, with a choice of red or white, as well as orange juice and non-alcoholic wine, so all tastes were catered for. I was shown to my seat and what a pleasure it was to sit with Eileen and Molly Briggs and Babs Norman - all prominent in founding the club all those years ago. I also saw other guests from our parent organisation - Age Concern Lindsey.

Rev Richard Emerson, retired vicar and regular diner at the club gave the Grace and then we started. The menu was very impressive - prawn cocktail or melon as starters, followed by roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts, runner beans and gravy. It was simply delicious and melted in the mouth!

To finish, there was a slice of anniversay cake, sherry trifle and tea or coffee. For those still hungry (not many!) there were second helpings of everything. What a meal! The cooks and all the helpers really excelled themselves for the occasion.

Hats off to them all!

Nigel Kingston was scurrying around taking lots of photographs as a lasting memory of the day. Then came a short speech and vote of thanks from Muriel Newman, now in her 90s and a regular at the club. She was Chairman of Age Concern in Nettleham in the 1980s and was one of the main supporters of the club, working tirelessly to raise funds and see her dream of a Luncheon Club realised and opened in 1982. Muriel and Eileen Briggs cut the birthday cake and we raised our glasses to toast many more happy and successful years of the club yet to come.

Nettleham Heritage Winter Talks For the first time this winter, Nettleham Heritage Association organized a series of three Winter talks.

An account of the first talk appeared in the last edition of Nettleham News and here is an account of the two subsequent talks. good enough for all three to see each other.

The starting point was a base line on Hampstead Heath. This line has been checked electronically in recent years and it was only one inch out! If no high land was available for the survey, then a tower was built, and one such tower can be seen at Scamblesby.

The result of all this meticulous hard work was that the maps were highly accurate.

28 February, 2006 Craig Spence: Sudbrooke Dig 2006 This was a well attended meeting, with thirty-four listeners and several new members for the Association. Some of the audience came from Sudbrooke, as it had been advertised in their village magazine.

Craig first told us of the initial difficulties they had in 2006 with the new DEFRA regulations, which gave them a few anxious moments.

However, eventually these were resolved and the dig started in the second week of July.

After a general introduction he showed us on the map where the 2005 dig had excavated.

He explained that frustratingly at the end of the 2005 dig they found evidence of a floor structure in one corner of area A. It was too late to do anything, so the area was covered and then filled in.

Thus in 2006 the new area A just overlapped the old area A. Here evidence of an underfloor of one or two rooms was uncovered. It is clearly a room, or rooms, with a hypocaust, as the bases of the tile stacks which supported the room floor can be seen.

Initially Craig was puzzled as one room was more like a corridor in dimensions. However, further examination of the dividing wall showed a gap in the wall, which could mean that the area is one room and the wall is a sleeper wall, which gives extra support to the floor above.

Craig went on to describe some of the many finds, which included a beautiful piece of flue tile with an impressed pattern and several pieces of painted plaster, some with more than one colour paint. All these finds indicate a site of a reasonably high status dwelling.

Craig said that the wood adjacent to the site shows evidence of various mounds and that he would like to extend his search to that area, if feasible, in the future.

There were several questions from the floor.

Zoe Tomlinson was on hand with a display of finds from this site, from the preliminary fieldwalk and metal detector sweep and from the digs of both years. Much interest was shown in these artifacts. This was a fascinating and informative evening. It is exciting having a dig right on our doorstep and let’s hope the exploration of this site continues for many years. Thank you Craig and Zoe for an excellent evening.

28 March, 2006 Stewart Squires: The use of OS maps in Historical Research This was another well attended meeting with twenty-one people present, which was an ideal number as we were all able to see a map while Stewart was speaking. He started with a very bold statement: “Whatever your interest in history, you will find something useful in a map.”

Stewart started by giving us the historical background of the OS movement. The British Army had great difficulty in 1745 when fighting the Scots in the Highlands of Scotland. The Scots knew the terrain in detail, whilst the British had no guidance in this matter. Thus the army decided they needed detailed maps of Scotland. Then the Napoleonic Wars made the matter even more urgent and expanded the desired area of coverage as they lived with the constant threat of invasion. Thus in 1791 the Ordnance Survey was founded, as an army department under Ordnance and a corps of map makers werer trained for the task. This service later was civilianized , but until the 1960s the head of the OS was always a senior army officer.

During 1885-6 a complete survey of the country was made, but copies of this 1st edition are not easy to find. However, the subsequent survey of 1905 produced the 2nd edition of the maps and these are more readily available.

During World War I the coverage was not too good. After the Second World War a new system was needed and the National Grid reference system was created.

In the early stages, surveying equipment, eg the theodolite, had to be invented for the purpose. The process of triangulation was used to produce the maps, this was done from three high points. Some surveyors and their teams had to camp out for weeks on the mountains waiting for visibility to be 39

At this point we started using the maps in front of us. In the top right-hand corner there is a number, first one in Roman numerals giving the block number, then after a decimal point another number in modern notation giving the map number within the block, up to 16. Block numbers start in a given county from the north-west corner and go eastwards until there is no more land in that county and then a new row starts again immediately below block 1.

On the map there is information about parishes, poor law unions, date of survey and of revision. All buildings of area greater than thirteen square feet are shown to scale, anything smaller just has a diagrammatic representation. There is no way of telling how many storeys a building has, however, a named house is probably an important one.

The scale is recorded on the map and every field has a number, with its acreage below the number. Again, the numbers go from west to east, north to south.

Fields and areas are measured with great accuracy and importance is given to the exact place from which measurement is made.

If there is a track between two fields, then the acreage is counted from the center of the track. This gives rise to strings of initials making this boundary clear, eg CTkOCR on a map means this boundary is measured from the ‘Centre of the Track of the Old Course of the River’.

We spent quite a time studying the maps and learning what the individual symbols mean, for example how, for woodland, actual individual trees and orchards are differentiated in their symbols.

This was an excellent talk and workshop which everyone enjoyed immensely.

In a Nutshell Always one to take a keen interest in what’s happening in my village, a little bird tells me (and I have lots of little bird friends!) that moves are afoot to introduce parking restrictions in the centre of Nettleham.

Now this worries me and I fear that this is the beginning of creeping urbanisation in our beautiful village.

So what has brought about this new development? Well, it seems that local traders have commented for some time that vehicles parked for long periods in the vicinity of Church Street and The Green are impeding their customers and that their businesses are suffering accordingly.

The Parish Council, in an effort to find a solution to this problem, called a special meeting with the all the traders to see if they had any suggestions as to how this could perhaps be resolved.

I had a peep through the window of the Old School on the evening of this special meeting and do you know, you could have counted the number of interested traders there on one paw!

So, in order to verify that there really was a problem, the Parish Council undertook a survey of the vehicles parked in Church Street and The Green, and, guess what in addition to vehicles belonging to the general public, several of the vehicles parked there for long periods during trading hours actually belonged either to the traders themselves or their staff!

And, despite six spaces in the Co-operative car park being kindly allotted for this purpose, these were not being fully used.

So it seems, with a little consideration and thought for others, this could all have been avoided. It’s the same old story as in other walks of life - the selfish and irresponsible behaviour of a minority results in penalties for the majority. I really can’t understand humans - still, when a few people have received parking tickets in the future, they might just start to think!

Trouble is, I don’t think one hour will be long enough to have my lovely tail cut, shampooed and blow-dried!

I was passing the Old School again a few weekends ago and I noticed there were lots of people in there, so, being of an inquisitive mind, I had a look at what was going on.

It was about the Parish Plan and what is proposed for our village in the future.

Everyone seemed pleased with the outline proposals and I have to say I agree with them - particularly about enhancing the environmental assets of our already beautiful village. You can see the full results of this final public consultation on pages 10/11.

Turn to page 60 and you will see the results of last year’s Best Kept Village competition, in which we were pipped at the post by Market Deeping!

Now I really think we can do better we all know that Nettleham is the best village for miles around and it should be a foregone conclusion that we win every year. All right, so I’m a bit biased, but I just love this village!

And finally, I would like to sincerely apologise to all the gardeners in the village who have a horse chestnut growing near their property and wonder how on earth there are little conker trees coming up all over the place, often quite some distance from the tree.

Well, I have to confess, it’s me! In the autumn, when all those plump, shiny conkers are lying about on the ground under the tree, I think to myself: “Now wouldn’t they just make a tasty snack in the winter, when there’s not much food around” and so I pick them up and go and bury them somewhere safe for later.

The trouble is my memory isn’t what it was, so I forget where most of them are hidden and so they grow!

In this Silver Jubilee year of the hospice, raising funds is as important - if not more so - than ever it has been in the past 25 years.

Thanks to the continuing efforts of the volunteer fundraisers, along with those in the shops, things are looking bright for this year. However, none of the events would make any money without the much valued support of the public.

What better way than enjoying a day or evening out, than to know it is also benefiting a good cause?

So please make a note in your diary:

FUND RAISING FOR LINK ROMANIA Thank you all for your support of the Coffee Morning held at Church View on 9 March, which raised £186.00.

Further generous donations after the event took this amount to £193.00. Wonderful thank you and, of course, a big thank you to Doreen, the Scheme Manager for allowing us the use of the lounge and kitchen once again.

We know you will be pleased to learn that the children moved into the Skills Centre during the first week of December. Whilst there is still much work to be completed, eg kitchen, laundry rooms, etc, it was great that the classrooms could be used during the winter months.

Very many thanks to all who are busily knitting hats, scarves, etc, - every one so very precious - ready for this year’s boxes.

Nettleham Badminton Player Gambia Trip Nathan Kennedy is 11 years of age and in Year 6 at Nettleham CE Primary School.

He has been selected as a member of a squad of 8-10 Lincoln-based Badminton players to go to the Gambia this July to play in a series of international Badminton matches there.

He will be the youngest player in the squad and the only one still at Primary School.

In order for him to be able to participate in this international sports initiative, Nathan needs to raise a total of £700 in sponsorships.

Extended School Services A community consultation from Nettleham C of E (Voluntary Aided) Junior School Setting the scene: the Government’s view In June 2005, the Government launched the extended schools prospectus, Access to Services and Opportunities for All, which set out its vision for extended services.

The Government has said that: “We believe that higher standards of attainment go hand in hand with promoting the well-being of children and young people.

Extending the range of what is on offer to them and their parents helps schools to identify and overcome barriers to attainment early on. Additional activities and services enable children to pursue wider interests, develop new skills and access any specialist help that they might need to resolve difficulties and fulfil their potential. Extended schools should offer children enhanced opportunities for learning, sports and the arts, as well as supporting parents and carers. This is about developing, together, a shared understanding of what a school can be: a place providing high quality teaching and learning focused on high standards of attainment, and also acting as a community ‘hub’ offering access to the support, often delivered by partners, that children and their families need in order to thrive and achieve.”

Successful extended schools have found that early, thorough consultation with local authorities, families and communities has been crucial in developing successful activities and support services.

It helps to identify local demand and unmet needs, and to communicate the range and timing of the opportunities schools plan to offer. We want to follow this lead.

For example, if we decide that the extended provision should be based around ‘offering more support for working parents’ this does not have to mean only before/after school clubs, it could also include supported activities for joint parent and child cultural activities, eg family drama workshops, ‘lads and dads cooking lessons’, etc.

We shall then agree on the preferred type of proposal, for example, childcare, lifelong learning, health and social services, cultural and sporting activities, then invite detailed tender submissions for this type of provision.

Finally, we shall choose the best tender, balancing meeting community needs and benefit for the school. We expect the whole process to be completed by July 2008

Vicar’s Wood You may have noticed that some tree planting has been done recently in the north end of Vicar’s Wood.

Ten oak and twenty-five hazel saplings were planted by a group of volunteers.

Oaks support the widest range of insects and fungi of any native tree, and hence the birds and other creatures that feed on them, but there was only one oak in the wood previously.

The not-very-pretty tree shelters, by the way, will be removed in a couple of years, but meanwhile should have doubled the rate of growth of the young oaks. The oaks will eventually be thinned to just four trees - we planted ten to allow for a few failures and so that the best in each group can be selected. In time, the idea is to fell some sycamores to make more room for them but that won’t be for perhaps 15 years.

The hazels will be coppiced - cut down to the base every few years in rotation, thus providing a layer of short bushes beneath the tall trees, and a variation of light and shade which is known to be particularly good for wildflowers. Again there was only one hazel before.

This is the first part of a plan to manage the Vicar’s Wood to make it still more wildlife-friendly - an outcome of the wildlife survey for the Parish Council reported in the last Nettleham News. The Council agreed to trial in two areas (Vicar’s Wood and Washdyke Lane) a scheme to

use volunteers to help them with this.

Volunteers can devote more time to surveying, planning and helping maintain such areas than the Councillors, but all such activity will be agreed beforehand by the Councillor concerned with the lead volunteer (me for Vicar’s Wood), and be in accordance with a set of principles.

For Vicar’s Wood these are: ● to preserve existing amenity value (paths and their verges) but to give more priority to wildlife needs elsewhere ● all new plantings to be of native plants (not garden varieties) chosen to provide not just visual appeal but shelter and food for wildlife The plan is for gradual change, not great upheavals. Some changes envisaged are very simple - mowing less often and less short, leaving more wood to rot, and providing nest boxes. There will be a management plan for the whole wood in due course, but so far we have only had time to make a plan for the north west corner just before the end of the tree-planting season.

There are lots of different views about what people would like to see in the wood - and we have to recognise that sometimes it’s not easy to balance being both wildlife- and people-friendly. I hope you will tolerate some things looking a bit untidy (logs left to rot, verges not mown so neatly) whilst enjoying, in time, a greater variety of wildlife - particularly birds, butterflies and wildflowers.

Vicar’s Wood may seem wild, but actually it lacks many of the birds (eg woodpeckers) and plants (eg foxgloves, ferns, red campion) that you might expect to see in a natural wood. This is partly because it’s not been a wood all that long - the oldest trees are perhaps 100 years - and partly because much of the planting in the past has been of exotic species which do not support much native wildlife, especially trees and shrubs like false acacia, snowberry and cotoneaster.

Clearly there has been a history of efforts by lots of people to beautify the wood, and we see the results in some fine seasonal displays of snowdrops, bluebells and daffodils. But the new plan is to put in only native plants, which can be just as pretty if not more so - for instance which of the snowdrops do you prefer - the simple native single variety, or the garden double which is the dominant type in the wood currently? (see photographs at the top of the opposite page).

What’s Going On? If you have any ideas about how to manage the wood, or would like to help in any way, please do get in touch. I know that lots of Nettleham people greatly value the wood, for all sorts of reasons, peace and quiet, watching the birds, picking the elderberries, or whatever, and we want this to continue.

As I’ve been recording the wildlife in the wood over the last year, I’ve gradually spotted all sorts of things I missed to begin with. Do you know where to find the walnut tree, redcurrants and gooseberries for instance?

And all the ‘bluebells’ are actually either Turkish Squill or Spanish Bluebell - there isn’t a single native bluebell there!

Perhaps the most important wildlife feature of the wood is the rookery (see photograph below), which has increased from about 40 nests last year to nearly 60 this, with more birds surviving thanks to the very mild winter.

One of the commonest comments I’ve heard so far is that ‘there’s too much ivy’.

On the one hand, ivy is valuable for wildlife - the flowers are one of the few suppliers of nectar for insects in late autumn, the berries that follow are a food source for birds and mammals, and its evergreen cover is where the wrens and blackbirds nest before most of the trees and bushes have leaves. And many people might think that the evergreen foliage is nicer to look at in the winter than bare ground would otherwise be.

But you can have too much of a good thing, so maybe we will try to reduce the ivy a bit, to stop it swamping other plants.

The thing is, if we just tear it out, the result may well be just more nettles growing in its place! So we are busy growing native woodland wildflowers to see which ones will be robust enough to be able to compete successfully with the ivy.

The ivy is just one of many examples where there will not only be different ideas of what’s best, but problems finding a good management method. We don’t want to turn the wood into a garden, or to have to rely on a continual regime of ‘weeding’ to keep it in shape.

That’s another reason why any changes will be gradual, so we can learn what works and what doesn’t, and create habitats which are as natural as possible while being easy to manage and attractive to look at.

I’ll be running some short guided tours of the wood on Friday and Saturday June 8th and 9th, at 10.00am and 2.00pm. If you’d like to come along, please ring beforehand if possible so I can get an idea of numbers.

BYGONE NETTLEHAM The two huge carthorses Of similar build and strength, Pull the heavy mower Backwards and forwards, Across an unkempt field, Rich in tall, sun-bleached grass.

Their noble heads and straining necks Are thrust forward in determination, As they patiently employ their great might To tow the ponderous burden, That lays low the crop, Along the length of the meadow.

Swathe upon swathe of new-mown hay Is left to lie on the sun-kissed ground, Where it dehydrates during long daylight hours.

It is occasionally turned by dogged labourers’ forks And tossed into the drying breeze; Releasing its potent aroma Into the fresh June air.

At the end of a busy day, The final load of hay is carted home By the twin leviathans, Who are forced to shoulder the burden once again.

They have toiled unrelentingly With their demanding, but compassionate master, And now he reassures them with praise, As they complete a valuable day’s work.

My Favourite Chair Sitting in my favourite chair, There’s lots of things to see.

As I eat my breakfast, A friendly blackbird looks in at me.

There are robins, blue tits, finches and a dove, Lots of garden birds that most of us love.

They are sitting and waiting on the garden wall, So I must drink my tea and go and feed them all.

Oh dear! Here’s Kiera the neighbour’s cat, She’s scared them all away, But never mind, I’m sure they’ll come back Later in the day.

For time is going by, And no matter how I try, Not a bit of damned equipment is in view!

I try so hard, And yard by yard, My promise to Mr King I try to keep, To wash the paint upon the walls, In the loo and in the halls, But water without Flash just leaves a streak!

The toilets too, I’m telling you, Will soon begin to smell a trifle queer, Sitting in my favourite chair, on a lovely sunny day, If the bleach you do not send, I see crocuses, pansies and daffs all on display.

To clean right round the bend, It’s time it made its appearance here!

And look! here’s yet another delight The Red Arrows on their daily flight.

So Mr H, dear Mr H, Please listen to my plea, Sitting in my favourite chair, And take pity on poor me, There’s lots of things to do, Or the sack I fear I will be getting here, I read and write and watch TV As the floors I cannot mop, (And sometimes have a nap!)

A Fishy Tale I’m a little silverfish, I’ve a girlfriend who’s a dish.

We live together in the Nettleham DC And every night we go togther For a walk round the old boiler While the caretaker is here to do the chores.

Mind, we have to nip about, Or we get an awful clout When she slops the big wet mop across the floors.

But we dodge the hefty pail And, with a quick flash of our tails, We disappear under the stockroom door.

Now in here we are quite safe As she can’t get in this place And they think the things are chewed up by a mouse But it’s my fishy friend and me.

We have a jolly good tea Of wool and cloth and little cuddly toys Then, while she stokes up Clarence, We have a little dance And a cuddle in the corner - what a joy!

But now the lights have all gone out, So safely we come out For she’s done her bit of cleaning for tonight And old Clarence he is sleeping.

So we stroll back in the skirting And so to bed - it’s been a lovely night.

The Patio Oh what a beautiful sight to see, Our patio at the NDC, Where growth of all kinds does abound, In gay profusion all around.

Nettles and brambles, grasses too, Even an elder bush or two, The coke bunker looks so sedate, And has a wild tree for a mate.

Now down comes the big boss from Division, And upon seeing this glorious vision, Says: “Oh dear me, this cannot be, I will get in touch with the ATC With spades and forks and other gear, They’ll soon clear the mess out of here”.

But I look around and I find, Beauty there of every kind, So when my work is done at night, I go round while it’s still light, And pick great bundles, everywhere, Of grasses, seeds and maidenhair.

Then in bunches with string they’re tied, And hung in the coke bunker to be dried, The overflow pipes lined up in there, No longer look all sad and bare.

And in our Centre a sight you’ll see, For lovely arrangements they will be, Before being chopped down by the ATC! But one thing puzzled me for hours Who says which are weeds and which are flowers?

1ST NETTLEHAM 4TH LINCOLN SCOUT GROUP REPORT We are well into the Scout Centenary year now and lots of exciting news to report.

The Gang Show was a huge success and helped to raise a considerable amount of money towards the hut. The children and adults all had a great time and the long weeks of practising were all worthwhile.

The Friday night cubs (Kestrels) were very successful in the District Cub Football and after playing well lost to Bassingham Cubs in the final.

The recent St George’s Day parade was very well attended and the sun shone as we left the cathedral and marched along Bailgate. We could not ask for a better backdrop to our annual scouting parade than the castle grounds and Lincoln Cathedral - we are extremely lucky.

The number of children and adults present at this event proves that scouting and guiding is still very well supported.

Our “Breakfast on the Green” on Saturday, 12th May 2007 was very successful with lots of people enjoying a hearty typical camp breakfast under the trees. Many thanks to everyone who came and supported the event this year.

As part of the centenary celebrations we will be joining the rest of the district on camp at Sudbrooke at the end of May. This is a national event with as many scout groups camping on the same weekend throughout the whole of England.

That’s a lot of children!

Please remember the bottle bank is still available on the Co-op car park. Just that little extra effort to bring your bottles down can help the scouts and guides raise much needed money for the maintenance of the hut. Thank you.

One of our past cub scouts recently took himself off on his bike to cycle all the way from Lands End to John O’Groats. Russell Ware, who can often be seen around the village on his bike, decided at short notice to complete this amazing trip to raise money for Comic Relief, with half his sponsor money going to the scout hut.

Russell can be seen in the photograph below handing over £400 to the Chair of the Hut Committee, Rod Mountford. Thank you very much Russell for this fantastic contribution and well done on your amazing achievement.

NETTLEHAM BOOKMARKS GALORE!

NEW ONLINE RESOURCES

We have been having a clear-out of our lost property box which, perhaps unsurprisingly, has quite a number of bookmarks in it which have been left in books over the last few years. They have all been on display in the Library during April and quite a few have been reunited with their owners. There are still a few here though which we will be keeping until the end of June, so please call in and have a look if you are missing your favourite bookmark, as this will be your last opportunity to reclaim it.

The Library Service now subscribes to the ancestry website which you can use for free! It can only be accessed from the computers in the library, but is a useful and important resource for anybody researching their family tree.

We’ve also had a few photographs left in books which are shown on the opposite page. Again, if you recognize one, please call and collect it before the end of June. We would really love to return these treasured memories to their owners.

DISPLAY BOARD We recently hosted a display of photographs of Belton House taken by Mr Snowden of the RB Camera Club based in Nettleham. They attracted many admiring comments and we would like to thank Mr Snowden for giving us the opportunity to showcase such a wonderful collection of photographs.

Incidentally, did you know that the children’s book by Helen Cresswell ‘Moondial’ - is set at Belton House and that you can reserve a copy through us if you would like to read it?

The display board above the three public computers is approximately 6’ x 3’ in size, and we are happy for local groups to put on displays here to promote themselves and their works. Please see Michelle if you would like to discuss this.

The final new online resource is NewsUK which can be accessed both from the Library or your home computer. You can use this to find articles from most national daily and Sunday newspapers, many regional newspapers, plus the current affairs periodicals Economist, New Statesman and Spectator. Articles can be emailed. Newspapers can be searched back several years, some as far back as 1991. The most recent articles available are for the day before the current date. Please note that the Lincolnshire Echo is NOT currently included in NewsUK. Click on the ‘News Topics’ link for access to virtual newscuttings files on a host of topical issues, eg GM foods, recycling, Iraq, surrogacy or homelessness. This is a very good site for students to use for homework projects.

We would like as many children as possible to join the scheme and have fun reading this summer, especially children 54

from the two Year Three classes from Nettleham Church of England Junior School. They visited Nettleham Library in early April and it was exciting to see them browse through the range of fairy, furry animals, funny, football and fantasy books we displayed.

You can now order the last book in the Harry Potter series, entitled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be published on 21st July. Please just pick up one of the owls on display in the junior library and take it to the counter to place your free reservation for the book.

We now have a great group of parents, grandparents and carers who come to the library for Story Time. We have just trialed a morning story time on Tuesday, 15 May at 10am to see if this is a better time for you. Morning story times have been popular at Ermine Library because they don’t conflict with nap times or picking up older siblings from school.

Please do let us know your views on this.

Story Times offer an opportunity for parents and carers to meet in a community setting. The children enjoy the stories and rhymes, movement and singing, and we use ideas from our craft books to further explore the themes.

We base our planning of Story Time on the 3 ‘r’s: rhyme, rhythm and repetition.

Research has shown that children who know nursery rhymes find it easier to notice and understand the patterns in written speech, that rhythm helps children to separate words into syllables, and repetition is important because children learn the patterns in stories.

If you are interested in this aspect of your child’s development, then you can explore further by looking at a fantastic new website, the address of which is www.youbabybookmagic.org.uk The website is a partnership project by Sure Start and Bookstart.

Thanks to all of you who attended and supported our Easter Extravaganza and who helped us to raise over £300 towards the purchase of some much-needed new storage and filing equipment, due to our ever expanding numbers of children attending. Much fun was had by all, especially those who took part in the Easter egg hunts in the garden and also the decorating of the Easter biscuits!

Our thanks also go to Louise Bromfield and Emma Shaw, (two of our Mums) who ran the Lincoln 10k. Thanks to all those who sponsored them as the fantastic amount of just over £300 was raised. Once again this money has gone directly into providing new equipment for the children at playgroup. The new equipment that has been purchased will allow the children to have more freedom and access to our wide variety of toys, which is something strongly supported by recent policies and guidance given by Ofsted.

We have also enjoyed some wonderful visits from the library service staff who have been coming into playgroup to share Storytime with us, an activity which has been greatly enjoyed by the children (as illustrated in the photographs).

During the last two terms that our older children have with us before they leave to go off to school, we have created a classroom environment‚ to help them with their transfer to the Infant School.

The aim is to equip the children with the relevant social skills for life in the classroom. They will be encouraged to take part in a whole group activity and be encouraged to learn negotiating skills, taking turns and expressing their independence - essential for their time in the classroom.

Reflexology The Holistic Complementary Therapy David Herbert, who with his wife moved to Nettleham in November last year, explains how this therapy may help you.

With ‘touch’ therapies growing in popularity, the one-to-one communication which reflexology offers has tremendous advantages in stimulating the healing process. It is the most natural, non-invasive (and drugless) therapy, in addition to being a very powerful one.

Foot reflexology has now been proved to be a very safe and effective way of helping the body to heal itself, treating most of the everyday problems with tremendous results. For whatever reason, we know that patients treated with foot reflexology feel better and enjoy a new-found mental and physical relaxation. Both biological and physical disorders often leave them after seeking the help of a reflexologist.

Reflexology is the holistic approach to health, emphasising the care of the whole person - not just their physical level, but emotional, mental and spiritual levels also.

Because all these systems interrelate, dysfunction on any one level can lead to disorder in other parts of the body.

Reflexology Practitioners adopt this approach recognising the body’s unique capacity for self-healing.

insomnia, irritable bowel/colitis, migraines/headaches and sinusitis. It also provides great benefit to sufferers with Myalgic Encephalitis (ME) and is recommended by antenatal clinics for expectant mothers.

It also has great preventative value because imbalances can be detected and corrected at an early stage. Reflexology is not just for those with obvious health problems - an occasional course of treatment is a pleasant way of relaxing, maintaining health and well-being. It improves the nerve and blood supply within the body and helps to restore and maintain, if sessions are continued, equilibrium.

The number of treatment sessions vary as each individual’s body is different and each has particular needs in relation to their medical condition. However, approximately four weekly sessions are recommended in the first instance, followed by fortnightly/monthly ‘top-ups’ to keep the body’s balance ongoing.

An initial consultation and treatment takes approximately one hour and will include a period of investigation of your specific condition(s) that require treatment.

(Clients are requested to provide as much detail as possible on their medical history including any prescribed medication currently being taken.) Subsequent sessions last around 50 minutes. A foot massage is included at the end of the session to aid relaxation and stimulate the body’s systems.

David previously practiced in St Albans since 1997 and had many successes with clients with various problems.

He saw a 4 year-old with asthma who had been hospitalised on a number of occasions and was not growing, but, through reflexology over the next 10+ years, turned into a flourishing teenager beating her peers in swimming galas.

Through reflexology he assisted at least 3 women to conceive and helped numerous others through pregnancies. He also helped a young lady with her panic attacks in the run up to her wedding day. These panic attacks were affecting her work and relationships.

He has also had good success in helping those with IBS, reducing the symptoms for those suffering with PMT and menopause.

Hayfever and migraine sufferers were others that David helped.

Those experiencing stress often complain that tension is stored in the shoulder, neck and head areas. IHM relieves these feelings - poor blood flow is stress-generated muscle tension.

A treatment involves working with a firm and gentle rhythm to the shoulders, upper back, upper arms, neck, scalp and face.

This therapy eases tight muscles; releases shoulders; aids lymphatic drainage to the face; encourages good blood supply to the face; promotes healthy skin and tone to facial muscles; encourages good blood supply to the scalp; nourishes hair roots and strengthens hair; helps improve dandruff/psoriasis; eases headaches, migraines and sinusitis. Like reflexology its effect is not just physical - it works on the emotional level too - calming the spirit, promoting relaxation and relieving stress.

Treatments last around 35 - 40 minutes, but clients should allow at least 45 minutes in their schedule.

First Round

Once again this year, Nettleham will be entered for the annual Best Kept Village and Small Town Competition, organised by The Campaign to Protect Rural England and the Community Council of Lincolnshire.

Traditionally, we have always done very well in this annual competition in past years. There are several trees on The Green which testify to these successes and are a delightful addition to the village centre environment.

We were narrowly beaten to first place last year, so let’s make sure we all do our best to keep the village looking spick and span for when the judges come round in the summer to assess our efforts and make their decision as to which villages will receive the awards.

Second Round

Alongside are reproduced the marking sheets for the three rounds of judging in 2006 and you can see from the figures and comments from the judges where we dropped marks and where we should be particularly vigilant this year to avoid the same happening again!

Do make sure you do your bit to keep the village looking clean and tidy - we all know that Nettleham is the best village in the area, but, of course, we would like others to know it too!

Beckside Footpath Now Completed Readers who take regular walks around the village will probably have seen that the stretch of footpath between Church Street and Vicarage Lane has been recently improved by levelling and the addition of a crushed limestone surface.

Although rather loose at the present time, it is anticipated that this surfacing material will, with weathering and regular foot traffic, coalesce into a compact surface over a period of time.

Linking directly with the western Beckside footpath, it now provides a continuous waterside walk from Vicarage Lane to The Rookery and must be one of the prettiest village walks in the county of Lincolnshire.

Perhaps some sensitive planting of native wildflowers in the future would improve it still further, enabling both residents and visitors to the village to enjoy the changing scene through the seasons.

Willingham 3-2 in the Kelly Read Cup Final in a thrilling game played at Sincil bank on Sunday 29 April 2007.

Well done to all the lads and managers Mick Adams and Shaun Pearse for a great season and good luck for next season.

A Short History of This is an introductory outline based mainly on secondary sources and observations. We now invite you, our reader, to help us improve this article with your own specialist knowledge From the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution Wood, like water, is a vital commodity we take for granted and then don’t bother to mention in our writings and records. Thus a survey of secondary sources provides very few useful references.

There is evidence of Bronze Age and Roman activity in the Nettleham area, but no clear signs of habitation survive. Excavations in the field, which today is noted for the medieval Bishop’s Palace, suggest that Nettleham was populated in Anglo-Saxon times, a view enhanced by the suffix ‘-ham’ (a home), but we know little about the flora and fauna.

The Domesday Book of 1086 has no reference to woodland in ‘Netelham’, but mentions the king having three ploughs, twenty-eight villeins and twelve bordars, indicative of an arable and pastoral economy based on agriculture. Whilst the well-drained sandy, stony soil layered with clay was no match for the riches of the Fens, it provided adequate terrain for crops vital to what was then the third most populated county in England after Norfolk and Suffolk.

Throughout the Middle Ages, there are references to trade in sheep and wool, and tithes in hay and corn, but nothing on timber production in Nettleham. However, wood must have been present to provide fuel for fires, charcoal for smithies and timber for house building. However, we have no grand survivor here like the Major Oak and its neighbours in Sherwood Forest.

In 1284 Edward I confirmed that the manor of Nettleham was to be held by Oliver Sutton, the Bishop of Lincoln with the following words: “I hereby allow and firmly instruct that the aforesaid bishop holds that good manor … with all its appurtenances, in woods and plains, in meadows and pastures, in roads and lanes, in water and mills, and in all things”… but there is no indication of quantity or quality.

Perhaps the churchyard yew tree which still flourishes today was planted to provide material for archers and the traditional link to another world.

Three centuries later we find that the keeper of the manor, Jerome Morton, was to have 2d a day and the profits of the small orchard and gardens …. “the pears, apples and other fruits, as also necessary and sufficient kitchen herbs growing within the precincts of our manor” (30th September 1546). Similar grants were made to later holders of this office.

A few years later the will of Bishop Holbech who died in 1551 mentioned a bequest that “my Tenauntes of Netlam have foure poundes towards the fensinge of theire fields from foreners, the said four pounds to be payed when they have made halfe of the saide fence”. The bishop was probably recognising the dangers of payment before the job was done, but perhaps he was acknowledging that keeping stray animals away from the crops was not easy where timber was scarce.

The Enclosure Act of 1777 brought major changes with the North and South Fields separated by the Beck and all the common lands now being divided. These were then fenced or hedged with hawthorn to establish the lay-out of the village as it remained into the second half of the twentieth century when its most rapid expansion began. The roads were to be a minimum of 60 feet in width. However, change had its moments of difficulty such as the fine of one shilling imposed on John Vicars, carpenter, on 14th April 1779 “for a piece of wood lying upon the Highway”.

The evidence of the 1880 1" to the mile Ordnance Map maps confirms the road pattern and also the absence of blocks of woodland in the Nettleham area. There is parkland to west and east, but nothing substantial until Skellingthorpe Wood is reached.

Industrialisation brought many benefits, although rural villages such as Nettleham were not connected to mains gas and electricity until 1934, water 1937 and sewage 1938-1939. However, nearly two centuries

In fact it seems that there was not an abundant supply of timber in Nettleham itself. Florence Baker (1938) notes that “On St Lawrence’s day 1290 … Lambert ad Ripam went to Saxilby to buy timber for a lady chapel”, which is outside the normal mediaeval pattern of self-sufficiency except in salt and iron. Perhaps this project was too ambitious and stretched the village’s resources beyond breaking point. The carved timbers inside the church, remodelled in the 13th century, may also have been imported, and it is noted by Rogers that timber was brought ‘from the north’ to be sold at the Lincoln trade fairs, some of the largest in the kingdom.

earlier the development of the canal system brought cheap coal, slowly but efficiently, to the Brayford for onward distribution, a trade accelerated by the coming of the railways in the mid nineteenth century. As a sign of the times, in the ‘hungry forties’ (1840’s) an 80 year old Nettleham woman was charged with stealing a few coals from her neighbour.

Photographs taken at the turn of the last century provide an interesting confirmation of the rather bleak fenced and hedged landscape which has emerged from earlier records. The 1905 photograph of Nettleham Church from the east (see photograph below) shows the old tower mill and a few trees along the Beck. However, some of these survive magnificently and significantly to the present day.

The village in the last century In the last hundred years Nettleham has changed dramatically from being a typical Lincolnshire farming community with 944 inhabitants (1851) to being a quiet, but populous, dormitory or commuter village with employment mainly found in Lincoln itself. New houses were added outside what is now the conservation area with classic ribbon development along all the village’s arterial roads in the middle of the twentieth century followed by large estates from the 1960’s to the present. Most building took place on former farm land where there were few large trees.

Today the grander specimens are largely confined to the heart of the village along the Beck or at places inhabited by the local gentry or successful businessmen, such as Lodge Lane and Hall Lane where the gates brought from Lincoln in 1856 and the splendid lines of trees are the most conspicuous relics of the Hall, gutted by fire in March 1935. Today the fine rookery in Vicar’s Wood bears testament to the importance of the survival of this area in the heart of the village.

New trees of a more suburban nature have also been planted, many by developers keen to increase the likelihood of a quick sale, often creating shady streets. Others have been planted by individual home-owners for their own pleasure or sometimes to encourage particular birds.

Woods Around Nettleham Organisations such as the Parish Council and schools, as well as individuals, have also been active in commemoration of significant events such as the passing of a much loved friend or relative, or in recognition of competition success, as in the Best Kept Village awards now enhancing the Green.

In recent years the development of the Lincolnshire Police Headquarters (1976-1979) has brought further change, the Beck bordered by the largest pond in the village and increasingly mature trees in a parkland setting which links with the older trees of the Conservation area established in 1969 and Green Lane. Mulsanne Park and Bill Bailey’s Field are also important recreational spaces enhanced by thoughtful tree and shrub planting over the last twenty-five years.

Although it is very different from a century ago, the village has certainly become increasingly green in many ways.

In addition to these obvious sources, there are almost certainly some excellent primary materials which could be explored for further clues and insights into this evolving story of wood and woods in our village. These are likely to include the following: Enclosure maps from 1777; Tithe commutation maps from about 1840; ● Larger scale Ordnance Survey maps from the last 125 years; ● Nineteenth century trade directories such as White’s and Kelly’s; ● Local newspapers with references to woodland activities in the village; ● Photographs at any time in the last hundred or more years; ● Stories in back numbers of Nettleham News; ● Memories of residents who have been in Nettleham for a long time ● ●

How do we know this?

This first version of a woodland history of Nettleham is based largely on personal knowledge, scrutiny of some Ordnance Survey maps and the limited range of secondary sources listed below.

The Nettleham Woodland Trust is a very new group. Some of us have not lived here as long as many villagers, but we are very keen to develop our knowledge of the woodlands around the main village and in the parish as a whole. Therefore we earnestly hope that some of our readers can add to this account.

In conclusion The evidence suggests that a large arc of countryside north of Lincoln between Skellingthorpe Wood to the west and Sudbrooke Woods to the east has had very little woodland for centuries, even perhaps since the first substantial colonisation in Saxon times.

The recently-formed Nettleham Woodland Trust hopes that the twenty-first century will see the development of community woodland in the area for the enjoyment of all. More Ducks for the Village!

At the beginning of March, quite by accident, I discovered a mallard’s nest with two eggs cleverly concealed in a group of heathers in my garden. The female went on to lay an egg a day until there were twelve in all.

Now, was it to be a massive omelette one evening for dinner, or should I be a conscientious villager and pierce them all to render them infertile?

In the end, I could do neither, after all the trouble she had already been to and was now sitting patiently to hatch them out which took almost a month.

Sadly, I didn’t see them leave as I was away for a few days, but when I returned there was a female on the Beck nearby with just two tiny ducklings, so, if it was her, with this level of infant mortality there’s really no need to worry about too many ducks!

New Art Gallery Opens in Nettleham On Friday 6 April 2007, Lindum Heritage Gallery opened its doors for the first time in the village at 19 The Green (see advertisement on p15 Nettleham Now).

Invited visitors were offered refreshments, a glass of wine and the opportunity to be among the first to view the wide range of artwork and other creative crafts on display in the new gallery.

Lindum Heritage Gallery is a new venture for Craig and Zoë Tomlinson, who are both qualified archaeologists and run a series of Archaeology & History Short Breaks and Day Tours to enable both visitors to the area, and local residents, the opportunity to learn something of the history of Lincoln and the surrounding county and also to take part in archaeological excavations in the locality.

An active member of the Nettleham Heritage Association, Craig gives very interesting talks on a number of different subjects, but particularly on the archaeological dig which is currently taking place in the neighbouring parish of Sudbrooke. This dig, believed to be on the site of a Roman villa, is proving to be a fascinating topic for local residents and may eventually lead to some discoveries of national importance in the future.

CRICKET SEASON 2007 The new cricket season is finally under way and the new season has brought new faces to the club, most noticeably new overseas player Kim Roodt from South Africa.

He has started the season well, taking four wickets in his first game in a win over Market Deeping. Another new face that has started the season well is Nathan Poundall, who scored his maiden century for the club in the National Cup Competition against Killamarsh Juniors.

The ton from Poundall helped towards a victory, with the club now due to face Clifton Alliance from York in the next round. All four senior teams have had a good start to the season in their respective leagues. Hopefully may this continue for the rest of the year.

As I mentioned in the Spring Edition of Nettleham News people may be noticing a few changes around Mulsanne Park. The club has been able to renew its net practise facility and also the artificial match wicket.

These had been in place for thirteen years and were well passed their best. Therefore thanks must go to two local businessmen, Simon Bilton of ‘Wecando Flooring Specialists’ and Ken Shingdia of ‘Krystals Lincoln’ for their financial support, both of whom made contributions to the club.

With this help the club was able to apply to Sportsmatch, which is the Government’s business sponsorship incentive scheme for sport. Sportsmatch were willing to match the money contributed by the two businessmen to pay for the artificial match wicket. This is used by junior teams providing the young players with a good consistent surface on which to learn their cricket. The practice net area renewal was mainly funded by the major grant organisation ‘Awards for All’. Our thanks go to all of those people involved in helping the club upgrade the old facilities.

There is also a very special thanks to those within the club who put together the grant applications.

Nettleham CC has a number of events that will take place over the summer. Firstly on 13 July the club will be hosting its first ever Summer Ball at the White Heather, Caenby Corner. This is a big event with the intention of supporting the construction of a new scorebox. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket or require any further information, please contact Jayne Cook on 01522 730636.

Friday 27 July is the date for the Nettleham CC Golf Day at Canwick Golf Course. This will be the second year of the event, the format being stableford pairs. The cost for the day will be £35 per person which will include a raffle and a three-course meal.

Tee-off times will be from approximately 1.00pm.

On Friday 3 August is the annual Junior Kwik-Cricket tournament, this is an invitation tournament running throughout the day starting around 10.00am for U9’s and U10’s cricket sides from around the county.

When you read this we will either be saying good luck or congratulations to Paul and Sue Smith and Richard and Elaine Hare as on Wednesday 30 May they will be undertaking the Three Peaks challenge.

This involves climbing the three highest peaks in Yorkshire in twelve hours. The distance to be walked is 26 miles and climbing over 5,000 feet, I hope you make it back before the Saturday Richard, as I believe it’s your turn for the cricket teas!
