A warm welcome to the spring 2007 edition of Nettleham News. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it and find all the news, views and information of interest.

The local police have emphasised it is essential that residents report every single crime of which they are aware.

Along with your spring edition of Nettleham News, you should have received the updated 2007/8 edition of Nettleham Now, containing everything you ever wanted to know about our village.

If there is something that should be included, but perhaps isn’t - then do please let me know before the next edition.

I would firstly like to sincerely thank all the advertisers who once again have made it possible to produce both Nettleham News and Nettleham Now. Without the funds generated by their advertisements there would simply be no magazine and I would urge readers to purchase their products and use their services whenever possible and do please remember to mention the two village publications when contacting them.

Secondly, I would like to thank everyone who sent in articles, photographs, poems, etc, for this first edition of the year.

I frequently receive compliments on the magazine, but remember, it is YOU, the people of Nettleham who make it what it is. So please, don’t hesitate - if you’ve never sent anything in before - have a go!

Nettleham Woodland Trust There may be some exciting news from this new group - I hope to be able to tell you more in future editions later in the year.

If you think you may be interested in joining this group and helping with their long-term objective of planting community woodland around our village, see page 9 for more information.

Even if you’re not a member of this group, why not collect a few tree seeds this year and grow them on in pots, or, if any naturally-sown tree seedlings should happen to come up in your garden - pot them up and have them ready for the future.

Even if they aren’t used for our new woodland, at least your little trees could be the start of a stunning bonsai collection for your family!

Unless crimes, however seemingly trivial, are reported, the police remain unaware of them and the crime is not logged onto the police computer. Consequently the crime figures and statistics are not representative of the real situation.

So if you see a crime being committed, even minor criminal damage to properrty, etc, don’t hesitate to report it - the police welcome every single call to assist them in carrying out their work. The detail you give them might just be the missing piece of a jigsaw which could ultimately bring a criminal to justice!

Think about joining the excellent email service which the police provide to keep you up to date with information about what’s going on (see page 15).

Recycling in the Village Still confused about what you can and what you can’t put in your wheelie bins?

West Lindsey District Council are staging a series of afternoon sessions at the library, commencing Wednesday 7 February 2007 and continuing every other Wednesday after that.

So if there are any questions which you may have about recycling, or any other aspect of refuse disposal, do come along between 2.00pm and 4.00pm and talk to members of their Customer Services Team (see page 7).

All the information has, where notified, been updated and there are several new listings. In both this magazine and Nettleham Now there are also a number of completely new advertisements from local businesses, so if you read both publications you can be sure of finding out all there is to know about our village.

Do keep this valuable publication next to your telephone all year - I can guarantee that you will need it sooner or later!

I always keep the latest copy of both Nettleham News and Nettleham Now together next to the telephone - it’s surprising how often you need to refer to either one or the other!

Nettleham Parish Council News The Parish Council has been working hard over the past months and tackling a number of important issues: looking at the problem of dog fouling, cemetery usage, parking and traffic issues, the school safety zone and Parish Plan, to name but a few.

The Council has given a donation to the local LIVES group in the village to help fund this important local charitable resource.

Parish Precept The Parish Council is pleased to announce a very small increase in the money we request from the District Council, known as the precept. We have requested an increase of only £90, divided between all taxpayers - which is an increase of less than one-eighth of one percent. Because this is a less than inflationary increase in real terms, residents will receive the same great level of service from the Parish Council, but for a reduced real terms cost.

Bus Stop The Council has sought further information on the matter of the bus stop near All Saints Church. It can now be reported that a plan for modifying the bus stop has been requested to take into account the views expressed by the Council and the Area Highways Manager. The plan is likely to involve extending the bus stop area into the lay-by and raising the kerb.

Parking in Church Street Whilst efforts by the Council to relieve the problems caused by parking on Church Street were initially welcomed by local business owners and their employees, the problem has returned. The council had negotiated with the Co-op, which had kindly provided six parking spaces. These were for use by local business employees, so that more space on Church Street would be available for customers. A meeting has now taken place between the Area Surveyor and members of the Council and a request has been made for a scheme to be drawn up for restricted parking in Church Street. The Council will consider this matter before making a decision on implementation.

that our children are protected from the dangers of the passing vehicles on Scothern Road. The existing entrances will be closed and a single entrance will be created in the centre of the boundary of the playing field along Scothern Road.

Q Old School Car Park & Parish Office

The Parish Council has agreed that the surface of the car park at the Old School requires replacement. Such a scheme is being created for the Council’s consideration.

The Council also has need to expand the space available for conducting its administrative duties. It has therefore been agreed that, in principle, the Council will consider an extension to the rear of the Old School to provide further office space.

Consideration was given to the possibility of renting office space in the village; however, it was generally felt that this was an ‘empty hole’ into which the Council would be pouring public money.

The speed survey requested for Washdyke Lane some time ago will be completed in the next two months.

Waste Disposal Service Members of the Council were invited to attend the West Lindsey District Council Recycling Centre, run by Fox/Lindum at Owmby.

John Downs and I visited the facility on Thursday 1 February. A particularly interesting part of the tour was how the recyclable waste is separated. Initially, the contents of the blue bins are taken to the plant and pass onto a conveyer belt, where the detritus is sorted by hand to remove any obvious contamination (we saw carpet lining and a Wellington boot!).

The waste then passes under a high-powered magnet, which has a rotating belt passing over it. This pulls up any ferrous material such as tin cans. The waste then passes under an electrostatic field which separates the Type 1 and Type 2 plastics and glass from the aluminium.

The plastics and glass then pass through a massive cylindrical, rotating column which separates out the glass and plastics.

At each stage of this process the resultant material is baled, or otherwise packed, to be dispatched for recycling.

The paper is handled separately, but contamination with windowed and manilla envelopes and other undesirable materials, such as telephone directories, can make an entire load of 24 tons worthless for recycling.

The plant is soon to expand to include a harmonic imploder which will collapse glass to 4mm grade sand, for use in laying block paving and the like.

The Council has received confirmation from the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership that arrangements have been made for speed surveys to be carried out in both Deepdale Lane and Scothern Road and that these will be conducted over the next twelve months.

Wildlife Survey The Council warmly welcomed the work of Ian Benford and Bill Ball, amongst others, who submitted a substantial report to the Council regarding the wildlife to be found at various Parish Council sites in the village.

The Council were informed in depth of the recorded wildlife in the village including deer, bats and owls, to name but a few.

The Property Committee will consider implementation of recommendations from the survey.

Woods Round Nettleham In December of 2006, Nettleham Woodland Trust (NWT) was created by a group of village residents.

The purpose of NWT is to create woodland somewhere in the vicinity of Nettleham that will be accessible for the public, provide an educational resource for the schools and be a haven for wildlife.

This is something that has been achieved by dozens of community groups all across England. Land has been purchased, leased and has even remained in the ownership of the landowner, with the community group managing the woodland for the benefit of local communities.

The biggest hurdle for us will be to find a plot of land that the owner is willing to enter into negotiations over. We will consider any piece of land, regardless of size, shape, soil quality, etc.

Progess has already been made in identifying a large number of the local landowners around the village, a number of whom have already been approached.

Nettleham Woodland Trust is in the process of registering as a charity.

This is a copy of a letter recently sent by a Nettleham resident to the Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police.

Dear Sir,

I missed the village pump from which I carried many, many buckets of water for my Mother and Grandmother Jubb next door, especially on a Monday - washday! The Beckside looked very attractive.

I’ve been thinking … whatever happens to the things that get lost and found in this village?

For example, I lost my very useful kitchen scissors between The Green and the cemetery the other day. So I traced my steps expecting to see them on the pavement - BUT THEY HAD GONE! Did someone find them, pick them up and think ”Now what shall I do with these?”.

I suppose no one would want to bother the police, or put an ad in the local paper.

And then the same happened to one of my ear-rings on the way to the Village Hall.

And with the boot on the other foot, last year I found 3 little gold ear-rings on the pavement and I don’t know what to do with them.

Could we have a village Lost and Found Cupboard - wouldn’t that be a useful village service, or am I the only one around here to lose and find things?

Cycle Track not up to Scratch On page 13 of the last edition of Nettleham News there was a letter questioning why cyclists don’t all use the cycle path provided.

Yes, it is a pity that some cyclists don’t use the A46 cycle track, but as far as the section from Nettleham to the Ring Road goes, your correspondent need not be mystified.

The track is less smooth to ride on than the road, is too narrow for two cyclists (or a cyclist and a pedestrian) to pass each other, has the odd low branch to scratch your face if you don’t spot it, and cyclists have to give right-of-way to any side roads.

Please welcome Lindum Heritage who are taking over the shop unit. For those who just want a rest, please call in and chat to Zoe she is expecting you.

Just imagine what the A46 would be like if motorists experienced the equivalent conditions! It’s good to have a cycle track, but this section is really far below the standard it should be.

The subject concerned is the irresponsible parking of motor vehicles around the Nettleham Green/Church Street/Co-op store area. Could you please advise me if it is legal to park cars at the following locations: on a junction with another road, where road markings indicate it to be a give way junction; on corners which adjoin another road; parking opposite a bus stop, thus causing an obstruction every time a bus pulls up and double parking on a narrow road causing numerous problems. In all of these cases there is alternative parking facilities available behind the Co-op store in a purpose built car park.

This morning I witnessed an old man trying to cross the road, nearly being hit by a car, whose driver was obviously taking more care not to hit the stupidly parked cars. A couple of minutes later, as I attempted to pull out at a junction, another car missed my bicycle by inches, the cause of this near miss being a parked car on a corner, which obscured the vision of the other driver.

These are incidents that happen on an everyday basis. If you visit the area at anytime of the day between 08.30 and 17.00 you will see what I am referring to. The problems are compounded even more during the “school run” not only with more parking, but also with school children crossing roads to the shops. I have voiced my concern on this matter on more than one occasion to the community officer in Nettleham, and today to an officer at Nettleham Police HQ, who advised me to write to you. If you require any photographs please advise and I will forward some by email.

Whilst I accept your workload is very busy, but better policing of this area will eradicate this problem and make a visit to the village Green and its shops a lot safer.

PLEASE DO NOT LET IT TAKE A FATALITY TO MAKE EVERYONE AWARE OF THE DANGERS CAUSED BY IRRESPONSIBLE PARKING. Readers Letters What’s Happened to the Co-op?

I would like to know what has happened to our local Co-op shop - they don’t stock a lot of the goods you require.

First, as you walk in, there is an untidy newspaper and magazine rack taking business from our local newsagents. Also, putting goods down the aisles, where people with disabled buggies have great difficulty reaching items they require.

They must also think the residents of Nettleham are all alcoholics, with an entire aisle full of booze. Surely they could make that less and relieve the aisles of all the obstructions.

Heartfelt Thanks On Saturday 17 November 2006, outside Beckside newsagents, I stumbled and fell, injuring my forehead and one hand quite badly.

A young chap helped me to my feet and before my wife could get out of the car and reach me, he went into the shop and brought some tissues to stem the blood. He even waited around whilst my wife got me in the car to take me to the doctors.

My wife, of course, thanked him, but I’m afraid I was not in a fit state at the time to acknowledge his help. I don’t know any other way to contact him and I would like to think that he will read this and accept my heartfelt thanks.

Nettleham Day Centre Some years ago, in the 1970’s, Market Rasen Social Services opened the Old School in Nettleham as a Day Centre for the physically handicapped and I was asked to take on the job as caretaker (Division in Lincoln were also involved in the running of it).

While clearing out some things the other week, I came across the enclosed bits I had written about the little creatures I had to keep me company while I was there at night.

I was also on the Committee of the Lincolnshire Society for the Physically Handicapped (Welton Branch) who held socials in the building once a month.

I don’t know if any of our members are still about, but I wondered if any of my little jottings would be of interest to you for Nettleham News?

Readers may recall that on the Readers’ Letters page 13 of the previous winter edition of Nettleham News, a letter appeared from Sheila Gravells and the Poetry Group lamenting the withdrawal of the poetry section from our library.

A copy of the letter was also sent to John Pateman, Head of Libraries at Lincolnshire County Council and here is the reply:

Poetry at Nettleham/Welton Library I am writing in response to your recent letter to the Editor of Nettleham News regarding the withdrawal of poetry from the libraries at Nettleham and Welton.

The Library Service seeks to target its finite resources to ensure that the books available in libraries meet the needs of the communities they serve. Stock is regarded as a county resource and is rotated around the county to ensure customers have a constantly changing selection available at their local library.

As part of on-going stock management, a decision was taken to remove certain subject areas from particular libraries, where the low usage of materials indicated a lack of interest in those subjects from within the community.

Poetry was one of those areas where issues were very low and consequently the stock was removed and relocated to other libraries where there is demonstrable demand.

Whilst I would still maintain that this is a sound approach to stock management, I note the points in your letter about the needs of poetry groups in the area. The low usage of poetry suggests the stock previously available did not adequately meet the needs you have identified. As a positive move I am prepared to reintroduce poetry and would welcome your input and those of others in the community with an interest in poetry. Police News Jackie would like to pass on her thanks to everyone who sponsored her in the Santa Run at Christmas. She got the whole way round and raised a tidy sum of money for a very good cause.

She wants to send a very big ‘thank you’ to you all, and I understand she’s already in training for the Easter Bunny Eggstravaganza, and the Halloween Hike. Good on yer, Jackie, your doin’ us proud!!

A few days ago, on the 27 February 2007, the penalties relating to the use of mobile phones whilst driving were changed. The old penalty was a £30 fine issued at the roadside, or you could be reported for the offence and summonsed to court.

Welcome to this Spring edition of Police News, and yes, I’m back!!

My brief and temporary promotion to Sergeant has come to an end, and they’ve allowed me to return to Nettleham to await the final interviews later this year.

Before I begin I would like to say a huge thank you to Jackie (PSCO Parker), who has worked extremely hard to keep things going in my absence. Many of you have contacted me to say what a great job she’s done, and I’m sure things would not have gone so smoothly if she hadn’t been here. Jackie works tremendously hard and deserves to be praised for her efforts.

I’d also like to say thanks to PC Dave Morgan. Dave was asked to cover my role whilst I was away, but also ended up covering the role of response driver too on many occasions. He has worn many hats whilst he’s been at Nettleham and has managed to juggle them all very well. He’s been to a number of meetings in the village, and has been out in the community, when time allows, meeting people.

Even though I’ve returned, Dave will be staying at Nettleham. He has taken over one of the vacancies for a response driver, and can now fully commit himself to that role. A big thank you once again to both Jackie and Dave.

As this has not had the desired effect that the Government had hoped for, they decided to increase the penalty for this offence. If caught you will now receive a £60 fine (instead of £30) and your license endorsed with three penalty points. Also, the officer still retains the option to report you for the offence and summons you to court.

The reason behind this increase in penalties is mainly due to the fact that we are still dealing with road collisions that can be attributed to the use of mobile phones whilst driving. There are still instances throughout the UK where the road collision results in someone’s death, and this simply cannot continue. Many of you will think that the penalties are now too harsh, and that is your prerogative, but something has to be done and for the time being the Government has decided this is it.

To remind you of what constitutes an offence, here is a short, basic reminder. From the time you start your journey, to the time you arrive at your intended location, if you use your mobile phone either to make, or receive, a call/text whilst your vehicle is in motion you will commit an offence.

This extends to the time you are sat at traffic lights, stuck in a queue of traffic or sat at a roundabout.

Hands-free kits are still legal at the moment, but I would advise that this 14

If you do not have a hands-free kit, the only legal way to receive or make calls/texts whilst on your journey is to pull over in a safe place and apply the handbrake before answering. You only need to accumulate 12 penalty points (6 if you’ve been driving less than two years) before you lose your license, so I would strongly urge you all to make yourselves aware of the laws and the new penalties.

Towards the end of January, the library suffered graffiti to its rear doors. The graffiti depicted Tony Blair wearing a baseball cap with the word ‘ASBO’ next to him, and was clearly done using a stencil and black spray paint.

The words ‘Judge’ were also stencilled on the doors, and a further stencil depicting a rat.

The telephone box next to the library, and other places, were also daubed with similar graffiti on the same night.

Graffiti is classed as Criminal Damage as the library doors will now need to be re-painted, and we are taking this matter seriously. We have taken evidential photographs of the damage and have circulated them to officers in surrounding areas in an effort to identify the offenders.

Thankfully graffiti is very rare in Nettleham, and I’m convinced that someone in the village knows who is responsible. It is likely that the offenders are local youths, although

All Saints Church Events I can’t confirm this at present, but if you’re a parent and you’re aware that your teenager has such a stencil, or has access to one, please contact me.

Equally, if you are a local teenager and know who is responsible, then please make contact. You don’t have to leave your name, or contact number if you don’t wish, but if you do then it will remain strictly confidential and will not be disclosed to anyone.

Since returning to Nettleham I’ve had a fair few calls about parking within the village. This is a topic that has been with us for a few years now, and no doubt will remain with us for a few years to come. The Parish Plan questionnaire highlighted the issue once again, and I understand the Parish Council is looking into the matter, especially around the Church Street area, to try and alleviate the problem.

We are working together to try and make the village safe for all, pedestrians and road users alike, but until a scheme is finally put into place can I ask you all to use a little common sense. The main gripe seems to be about people parking on the footpaths.

The simple rule is this, if you park in a dangerous position you will get a ticket, or if you park half on the footpath to the extent that people can’t get past, including those that use wheelchairs, pushchairs, etc, you will get a ticket. If you park on a solid white line, or cause the total obstruction of an entranceway or driveway, you will get a ticket. You also need to pass this information on to friends and family who visit the area, too.

Please take care when parking - there are a number of spaces to park in at the rear of the Co-op, and if you visit someone who has a driveway, then please use it. We don’t want to start issuing tickets again, but if people won’t listen, then I’m sorry, but you leave us with no other option.

A few issues ago I asked whether anyone wanted to become a Special Constable. I gave the contact details of

our recruitment department at headquarters and invited people to contact them. So far, to my knowledge, no one contacted them, which has prompted me to issue a further request.

Special Constables are an important and integral part of Lincolnshire Police, and their help and assistance is invaluable. We would like to recruit more to help out in all aspects of policing, including Community Policing. Here at Nettleham we have already asked for two Special Constables to be allowed to join our Neighbourhood Policing Team, but, due to the lack of officers, that has not been possible.

We are looking to extend our team here at Nettleham to give us greater flexibility and an increased visible presence in the area we cover.

Recruitment have said that if someone specifically wants to work with the Nettleham Neighbourhood Policing Team, and work in a rural location, they will do their best to accommodate.

If you’re interested but don’t know what’s involved, please contact me and I can explain what the role of a Special Constable involves, or I can arrange for you to come up to Nettleham Police Station to see me for a face-to-face chat.

The email scheme is still in operation, as many of you know. It is becoming increasingly popular as many people can see the advantages of being warned quickly about crime in the area, so they can take precautions if necessary. If you’ve not yet joined, but would like to, all I need is your name, email address and the fact you’re from Nettleham. It only takes a minute to add your name to the list, and from then on you will be able to take advantage of the scheme, as many have done already.

Nettleham Wildlife Survey 2006 Throughout 2006 a small band of enthusiastic volunteers monitored the wildlife to be found on sites managed by Nettleham Parish Council.

These sites were: Mulsanne Park; Vicars Wood; Green Lane; Land on Riverdale, adjacent to the Beck; the fenced, green space on Washdyke Lane; the wooded corner of Kingsway and Washdyke Lane; Bill Bailey Playing Field; the Church Yard and the Cemetery.

The aim of our survey was to identify the wildlife that inhabits these sites, so that management proposals (eg erecting nest boxes, wildflower planting, etc) could be made to the Parish Council (These sites are already important wildlife refuges and the Parish Council should be recognised for the valuable work they carry out in maintaining them).

The survey produced some surprising results.

For example, which of the above sites do you think contains the most interesting plant life?

Have a guess - Vicar’s Wood perhaps, or Green Lane maybe? How many species of deer have been seen around Nettleham in the past 12 months? In the same period how many Buzzards were seen over the village? What nationally rare animal was found dead alongside the Beck on Kingsway?

Two very knowledgeable local botanists identified a very long list of plants found on the Parish Council’s sites. They found Bill Baileys playing field to be of particular interest for the amount of plant life it contains. Which just goes to show how a public space can be managed productively for both the local population and our wildlife.

Not surprisingly, the quietest of the sites (the Cemetery) had the most plentiful bird life with lots of bird-song. Mulsanne Park on the other hand was (considering its size) poor for numbers of birds seen. A lack of suitable nest sites perhaps? The trees in the Cemetery are certainly more mature than those in Mulsanne park.

The most common bird of prey seen around the village is the Sparrowhawk, a beautiful creature that has recovered from the 1980s, when pesticides almost wiped it out. Other birds that are familiar around the village include the Swifts (screeching overhead in the summer months), the Rooks next to the church, Jackdaws alongside the Beck and, of course, the Ducks.

The Beck (although not one of the survey sites) is noticeable by its lack of plant life. It is also quite devoid of insect life and there aren’t even that many tiddlers for the kids to catch. Yet a couple of older residents can remember the Beck, some decades back, being full of plant life.

Upstream of the village it remains that way with plenty of plants and aquatic life, the only obvious difference I can see is that there are fewer ducks compared to the village centre.

A local can remember his father telling stories of catching Trout in the Beck in the early half of the 20th Century. I’m also told that there were serious discussions (in the 1940s) to ‘pipe’ the Beck through the village centre because of the amount of raw sewage it contained!

Not all of our wildlife comes out during daylight hours. One summer’s evening, members of The Lincolnshire Bat Group took a walk round the village. They found Pipistrelles and also Noctules (one of the largest British Bats with a wingspan of up to 45cm) feeding above the pond on the Police HQ site. Apparently Noctules normally prefer wooded areas to feed and roost. Perhaps these individuals roost in mature trees somewhere on the Riseholme Park estate. All species of British bat have declined in numbers so it would be interesting if anyone knows of roosts within our village.

The most numerous (and most adaptable) animal seen around the village is the Grey Squirrel. It seems capable of making a home for itself even in areas with very few trees. Other animals that live in and around our village include Hedgehogs, Foxes, Rabbits and that least popular (but, like the Grey Squirrel, very adaptable) animal the Rat. Perhaps the most surprising sighting in the village was a Muntjac deer in a resident’s garden (see photograph below). The Muntjac is a native of China but was introduced to Bedfordshire in the 1900s and has since spread over much of England.

There were a number of other sightings that although not on Parish Council land were still of interest, these included; Roe Deer on the

Something that all public areas in the village appeared to lack in 2006 was butterflies.

A noticeable exception was a Buddleia next to the Beck on Riverdale - it was covered in Red Admirals, Whites and Tortoiseshells. It may be no coincidence that further along the Beck on Riverdale is a large clump of stinging nettles (much favoured by some butterflies as a food-plant on which to lay their eggs).

A dead Water Vole was found by the Beck alongside Kingsway.

Both Deer and Buzzard numbers have been increasing across England for some years now, with Lincolnshire being no exception. The Buzzard is one of my favourite birds, always reminding me of childhood holidays to Cornwall (where it’s common).

The Water Vole has not fared so well, its numbers across England decimated by the introduced Mink (escaped and released from fur farms). Between 1990 and 1997 its numbers across the UK fell by 88%. Has any one seen ‘live’ Water Voles in or around Nettleham?

On a more positive note, a gentleman (who lives in the centre of the village) sent in a list of over 40 species of birds seen in his garden since 1982. Whilst another gentleman, on Lodge Lane, sent in a list of 46 different species of bird seen in and around his garden (can any one beat this?)! There’s me thinking there was nothing but ducks in Nettleham.

The amount of wildlife in the village has certainly been a revelation - nothing particularly rare, but plenty of interest.

By the time this edition of Nettleham News goes to print, Bill Ball and myself will have presented the findings of the survey to the Parish Council.

We shall make some proposals for enhancing further the wildlife value of these sites, for example erecting nest boxes, planting wildflowers, etc.

Nettleham Trees The second of this new series on the trees of Nettleham focuses on a pair of neighbouring trees located in Vicar’s Wood.

How many times have you walked into Vicar’s Wood from Beckside, seen the two huge trees with the very knobbly trunks and thought: “I wonder what they are”.

Well, they are both London Planes, now generally accepted as a natural hybrid between Platanus occidentalis and Platanus orientalis, probably originating some time in the mid-seventeenth century.

They are a familiar sight in many urban town and city streets, where their greenish yellow peeling bark is an attractive feature of the tree, particularly in late summer.

It is best known as a stately, tall, hardy and vigorous street tree with peeling bark, curved or crooked branches and, in older specimens, the very charcteristic knobbly trunk. The tree is able to withstand regular lopping and is tolerant of atmospheric pollution.

The shoots are stout and brown, with alternate winter buds which are reddish and covered by a single closed scale. It is a deciduous tree and in summer, its broad

leaves cast a pleasant dappled shade. The leathery leaves are set alternately and are khaki coloured when first open, maturing to a glossy green above, paler on the under-surface. They are palmately veined, usually with five lobes and have stipules united to form a long tube-like stalk. They superficially resemble those of maples and sycamores.

The globular flower heads (“bobbles”) dangle on long stalks in June, the male and female flowers being separate, but on the same tree. The minute individual stalkless green flowers radiate from a central base.

The mature fruits are densely clustered to form a spherical spiky ball around 2cm across, which remain hanging on the tree throughout the winter, eventually disintegrating and falling to the ground the following spring.

The timber is pinkish-brown in colour without any distinct heartwood. It is a useful veneer timber and when quartered for this purpose is frequently referred to as “lacewood”.

The tree is rarely planted commercially and propagation is by means of seed, cuttings or by layering.

It is very difficult to find the perfect system which meets everyone’s needs, however, we will endeavour to keep looking at how we can improve the system from your comments. Please bear with us as we may have to make some slight adjustments until we get the system running smoothly.

An MBE for Pearl Wheatley One of the founder members of the Nettleham Heritage Association, Pearl Wheatley, was awarded an MBE in the 2007 New Year’s Honours List for her services to archaeology, history and heritage.

We will be holding our annual Spring Fayre on Saturday, 28 April in the Village Hall at 2.30pm.

This year we are supporting the St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice, Grimsby. The hospice provides holistic care for children and young people living throughout Lincolnshire, Hull and East Riding. All the children have a progressive life-limiting illness. The main aims of the hospice are to improve their quality of life, to bring fun into their everyday routines by providing specialist medical and nursing care and to keep them smiling. Extensive help and support to their families and carers is also offered.

Her lifelong interest in archaeology and history started at a very young age in 1957 when, with a group of sixth-form students, she participated in an archaeological dig on a school playing field.

Born in Lincoln, Pearl was a geography, mathematics and careers teacher for many years at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School at Horncastle, eventually becoming Deputy Head of the school.

On the very day of her retirement in 1985, Pearl received notification of her success in the examination to become a Blue Badge Guide, marking the beginning of a new career which would result in long and illustrious associations with local archaeological and historical organisations, both in the county and further afield.

Pearl was one of the founder members of the Horncastle Civic Society and also served as Chair for the Local History Society for over 20 years. She was also Secretary to the East Midlands Region of the Council for British Archaeology and remains an enthusiastic and active officer for the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology. She also serves on the Lincolnshire Historic Buildings Committee of the City of Lincoln Archaeology Panel, working with architects, archaeologists and environmentalists to give advice and offer guidance to the County Planning Department of Lincolnshire County Council.

Throughout her lifetime, Pearl has worked tirelessly for many different organisations, not least of which was her involvement as Secretary for the group which successfully campaigned for a new museum for the city of Lincoln, culminating in the opening of “The Collection” on Danes Terrace.

Acknowledged as one of the finest in the country, this £12.5m state of the art museum houses a wealth of artefacts from the Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, Viking and Mediaeval eras.

NETTLEHAM LADIES’ CLUB

Pearl is now actively involved in a new campaign to create a permanent home with more space to store and display a huge collection of important local historical treasures currently housed in a number of different locations: the Central Library, the County Archives, the Tennyson Collection and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

Pearl’s family have lived in North Greetwell since the 1950s and Pearl herself has lived there for over 20 years since retiring from teaching at Horncastle. She intends to move to Nettleham in the near future, where she is already a member of the congregation at All Saints parish church and a regular reader at the 8.00am Sunday morning communion service.

Among her other many interests and activities Pearl is also a founder member of the Nettleham Heritage Association.

Now approaching four-score years, Pearl says there is still much to do, so she has no intentions of putting her feet up just yet!

As if all these activities and interests don’t keep her busy enough, Pearl also enjoys gardening, crafts (tapestry-work), reading and travel!

I’m sure readers will want to join me in congratulating Pearl on her well-deserved award and hope we may look forward to welcoming her as a resident of our village in years to come.

An Easter Message I write this in February, when the shops are already full of Easter eggs.

Have you ever thought how odd it is that the popular symbol of Easter is an egg?

There aren’t any eggs in the Easter story.

There is a cross, friends who run away, a grave, but no eggs.

In ancient times the egg was regarded as the symbol of the universe. For the Egyptians and for the Romans, the egg represented the rebirth of the earth in the springtime, as it opened up to release the new life it contained.

Christians adopted the symbol to represent not the rebirth of nature, but the rebirth of humanity through the resurrection of Jesus. The breaking open of the egg to release the new life inside reminded Christians of the breaking open of Jesus’ tomb on the third day.

Colouring and decorating eggs became part of Easter traditions across the world from the fabulous jewelled eggs which Fabergé created each year for the Russian Tsar Alexander to give to his wife, the Empress Marie, - to the egg decorating competitions held in junior schools across Britain.

the Blue Peter Shoe appeal which has done so much to help children in Malawi and bring out the generosity in their richer brothers and sisters in the West. We see love and care shown to a woman devastated by the effects of a stroke, finding love and laughter despite loss of mobility and confidence. We see the courage of parents facing the death of their own child, but still able to consider donating organs to help others who are seriously ill.

It is not that the resurrection cancels out the crucifixion - new life comes from within a situation of darkness and death.

In the middle of suffering and “death” God is at work bringing new life and new opportunities to experience his love.

The stone is rolled away from the entrance to the tomb - the place of death - not to let Jesus out, but to let us in - to discover for ourselves the light of Jesus’ new life in the midst of whatever darkness we find ourselves.

But by far my favourite kind of Easter egg is the one made of chocolate. Perhaps as we enjoy our chocolate Easter eggs this year, we could remember that it symbolises the bursting open of Jesus’ tomb and the new life he offers to all of us.

But although we remember the resurrection of Jesus - perhaps with a chocolate egg or two - particularly at Eastertime, resurrection is in fact not a one-off event which happened 2000 years ago, or even something which just comes round once a year. Resurrection is with us all year round as part of Life.

God built resurrection into his world long before Jesus came to show it to us. Just as God brought new life out of death when he raised Jesus from the dead - in the world around us, if we look, we can see resurrection sometimes in the unlikeliest of places, as we see hope triumph over despair, love triumph over hate.

In the natural world, we see the green grass spring up from ground which appears parched and barren. We see a widow engaging with the slow and sometimes painful process of building a new life for herself, discovering love and friendship after the devastating loss of a life partner.

We see the courage of Damilola Taylor’s parents as they offer forgiveness to the killer of their son. We see something like 23

The challenge for us is to live that Resurrection Life - to find God’s Light and Love in the midst of whatever darkness we may face. Because we are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song!

British Legion Poppy Appeal 2006

WHAT DO YOU THINK? HUNGRY TO BE HEARD St Barnabas Hospice

Despite several areas not being covered and the loss of two weeks due to school holidays, we still managed to raise a substantial amount for the 2006 British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Our house-to-house collectors did their usual magnificent job with the sum of £1,133.38, whilst the business outlets provided yet another generous contribution of £885.32. A church collection of £44.33 brought the grand total up to £2,063.03.

This figure was slightly down on 2005, but nevertheless a wonderful effort, given less resources than the previous year.

We cannot legislate for our collection period coinciding with school holidays, as they vary in different parts of the country, whilst illness and holidays are unavoidable.

House-to-house collectors again provided the major source of revenue and every credit must go to them in undertaking this invaluable, but somewhat daunting, task.

Without their efforts, we simply could not function.

Our business outlets are equally important, providing spaces on their counters and desks which could be used in other ways for their own benefit, but they never fail us.

Again, our work would suffer greatly without their co-operation.

2006 proved the supporters of St Barnabas are amazing - and they really pulled out all the stops for the various fundraising events including: Hospice Christmas Fair: £2,169 Light-a-Light event: c£11,000 Stall at Christmas Market: £5,030 A huge thank you to them all!

2007 is the Silver Jubilee of the hospice - being 25 years since it first opened in 1982. A major milestone in its history and a year in which much is planned for the future - plans to take it forward - hopefully yet another quarter century.

If you eat well in hospital, you are more likely to recover from illness quickly and go home sooner.

Unfortunately, a staggering six out of ten older patients are put at unnecessary risk of malnutrition during their stay in hospital. Dr Morris says, “The more that older people, and those who care for them, know about malnutrition, the more they can protect themselves, or others.”

PERSONAL EXPENSE ALLOWANCE CAMPAIGN On 14 December 2006, Age Concern launched their campaign to increase the level of Personal Expenses Allowance (PEA) for people living in care homes who receive financial support from the local authority.

The current level of PEA is £19.60 per week and Age Concern believes that this is not adequate to enable residents to live with dignity and be engaged in society as they would wish.

This amount is intended for all personal requirements such as clothes, toiletries, family gifts, leisure and recreational activities, transport and telephone costs.

Age Concern believes that this is simply not enough and is campaigning for this to be increased to £40 per week.

1st (Friday) Nettleham Guides Annual Review Autumn 2005 - Autumn 2006 As usual, we have packed a fantastic amount into this year’s guiding programme. Here commences the ABC of guiding according to the 1st Nettleham Guides

In March we went to Parva House for our annual weekend of crafts, cooking and shopping in Boston. This also includes the now annual ‘lets scare them stupid’ by taking them up Boston Stump. Who needs a computer game for thrills when Boston Stump can deliver the real thing! We also had inflatable fun in Boston’s pool which is less kinky than it sounds ... but still fun!

We always aim to offer a varied programme of activities, so over a term there is something to suit everyone.

Activities this year have ranged from knitting with the ladies from Nettleham WI (page 72 of the winter 2006 edition of Nettleham News) to hiring the Lincoln ice rink for the exclusive use of Nettleham guides and families (I found it particularly reassuring that whenever I fell, I knew the person who picked me up!).

We have bag packed at Waitrose to raise money to send Jenny to Holland (unfortunately we made sufficient for her to be sent back again!). We joined Friday night Brownies for campfire singing and hot dogs. We’ve been ten pin bowling and on a night hike. At out parents’ evening we entertained parents with sketches and camp fire songs. The Big Gig November 05 was tremendous. We were front of stage.

Practically dead centre with eleven rows of deely boppered girls between us and Tony Christie! Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe from Blue did a surprise duet for us. Whilst Rachel Stevens, Liberty X and Girls Aloud were good!

Jenny went for international selection and was chosen to represent Anglia region at a camp in Holland. The rest of the unit were more locally based.

May saw us at the newly-opened PGL Centre at Caythorpe. Activities included abseiling, archery and a giant swing. We were challenged by the high ropes and an assault course. Other activities included low ropes, a climbing wall and quad bikes.

Camp was run by Liz Wheatley from Monday Guides who was doing her camping qualification. We went to ‘be beside the sea’ to Trusthorpe, where after 6 weeks of unbroken heat-wave we

encountered (as is our wont when we camp at Trusthorpe), high winds and torrential rain. Waterproofs on, we dug on the beach for a sandcastle competition.

We walked to Sutton (which was shut - not much trade in a gale!). We visited the Mablethorpe fair and got absolutely soaked in a cloud-burst. Real bad luck for those girls on rides at the time! Removing waterproofs we donned cowboy shirts and practiced our ‘yahoos’ for a barn dance.

We had the privilege of meeting the visiting girls from Minsk in Belarus and joined them for a campfire held, due to the appallingly wet conditions, in a nearby Brownie hut.

We finish the year with twenty-five girls (hopefully now dried out!), three young Leaders and four adult Leaders.

A thank you to all involved with Friday guides for their continued commitment and enthusiasm for giving the girls a varied, fun and action-packed programme.

B is for Badges Wow and haven’t we achieved a lot this year! First Aid, Outdoor Cook, Traditions of Guiding and World Guiding have all been gained. We visited the Collection in Lincoln and the Usher Art Gallery and learnt about Guiding in Belarus to earn us our Culture Badge.

Guides who went to Parva House gained Holiday Badge and Anglia Region’s ‘First Things First’ Award. PGL girls gained Outdoor Pursuits Badge, and going to Trusthorpe earned girls Campers Badge and World Traveller.

Two girls, Natalie and Natasha, are currently working towards their Baden Powell Challenge Badge organising for the unit such events as a sports evening, swimming and an Italian Night. They just have an Adventure to go on and they will have gained their award which is the highest achievement in the Guide section.

Shelagh and Sarah have both started working towards their adult leader qualification.

DOG FOULING IN NETTLEHAM WEST LINDSEY DISTRICT COUNCIL

At the request of the Parish Council, Nettleham News is reproducing the information supplied by West Lindsey District Council concerning the issue of dog fouling in the village (see right).

Why is dog fouling a problem?

Whilst it is acknowledged that many dog owners do remove dog excrement, it nonetheless remains an issue in the village and is a serious concern to the Parish Council.

However, as well as this nuisance value, dog dirt can carry a number of different diseases that both adults and children can catch, most notably Toxocara canis.

This is a roundworm, whose eggs can be present in dog dirt and, if accidentally ingested, the eggs may grow into the roundworms which, in extreme cases, can cause blindness.

Nettleham Parish Council are working with West Lindsey District Council, who now have uniformed Dog Wardens available to enforce new powers of Parish and District Councils for the implementation of on-the-spot fines, where such offences occur.

West Lindsey District Council have agreed to make their uniformed Dog Wardens available to patrol in Nettleham at unspecified times.

Particular areas of concern are: Mulsanne Park Sports Field and Bill Bailey Memorial Field and areas along Beckside and Deepdale Lane.

The patrols will, however, cover the whole of the village.

The Parish Council are now empowered (under the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005) to make a range of dog control orders (for failing to remove dog excrement, not keeping a dog on a lead and for permitting a dog to enter land from which dogs are excluded) and issue fixed penalty fines.

If any such order is imposed, it will supercede any by-law in force in the area for which it is introduced. They will be giving consideration to the exercise of such powers at a meeting in the near future.

In addition, the Property Committee of Nettleham Parish Council are currently considering the provision of further dog bins in the village, which are likely to be situated along the footpath between Jubilee Bridge and Vicarage Lane, Beckside and other areas of the Parish to be determined by the Committee.

The Parish Council acknowledges that most dog owners do comply with the requirement to remove excrement, but seek co-operation from all residents to ensure that all dog owners do comply.

Anyone who has trodden in dog dirt knows just how messy, smelly and unpleasant it really is.

To help reduce the risk of disease, all dogs should be properly and regularly wormed. Hands should also always be washed if there has been contact with any animal or their faeces.

What is West Lindsey DC doing to combat these problems?

West Lindsey DC is trying to tackle this problem in a number of ways.

Firstly, the Council is promoting responsible dog ownership through visits aimed at educating present and future dog owners. Advice and information is also provided through a leaflet, which may be obtained by telephone request, or from our website: www.west-lindsey.gov.uk Secondly, the Council has provided around 350 dog bins throughout the District for the safe and convenient disposal of dog waste.

Thirdly, West Lindesy has adopted the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 and, in doing so, has made it an offence not to clear up after a dog has fouled. The order covers most roads, footpaths, grass verges, playing fields, parks and other public areas in towns and villages throughout West Lindesy.

Anyone found guilty of an offence under this Act can face a fine of up to £1,000.

Alternatively, an offender may be given the option of paying a fixed penalty fine of £50 and avoid a court hearing.

The Council are seeking to secure prosecutions against irresponsible dog owners who do not clear up after their pets in public areas and will be carrying out routine monitoring of known problem areas. However, the Council recognises that it will be difficult to catch all the offenders and would greatly appreciate help from the general public.

So we would appeal to anyone who knows of someone who regularly allows their dog to foul in a public place and then fails to clear it up, to consider calling us in strict confidence on 01427 676676 and we will take it forward from there.

So the message from the Council to all dog owners is very clear: when owners are exercising their animals, make sure you have a supply of plastic bags with you and dispose of them properly in the bins provided.

Alternatively, double-bagged dog waste can be disposed of with domestic refuse in the black wheeled bins.

If you have children who take the family pet out for walks from time to time, make sure that they too are aware of what they should do if their dog fouls whilst out in public areas. This is particularly important in places where youngsters congregate, for instance children’s playgrounds.

The public have made it clear to us that they want us to take action against this anti-social behaviour and the Council is determined to respond as positively as possible.

Members of the Neighbourhood Warden Team are available to attend meetings, daytime or evenings, to explain their role in fighting environmental crime, including fly-tipping, littering, graffiti and, of course, dog fouling.

HELP LIVES On the 4 March this year the Nettleham LIVES First Responder scheme will have been operating in the village for 5 years … doesn’t time fly!

Yes, it really is 5 years since we took possession of our automatic external defibrillator and a small group of volunteers made sure it was available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In that time we have been called out to nearly 350 people living in Nettleham and the surrounding areas.

The purchase of this valuable piece of equipment was made possible because of the kind generosity of residents and local businesses in Nettleham and we hope we can count on your continued support so that this scheme can continue to benefit the residents of Nettleham in the years to come.

Our group is run by volunteers all living in the village - some acting as First Responders and others helping out with fundraising. We are always on the lookout for new members, so if you have some spare time and would like to help the people in your local community, give Kay our co-ordinator a call to find out more information.

Why do we need First Responders?

Nettleham is about 4 miles from Lincoln and an ambulance with its sirens and flashing lights can reach any address in about 8 to 12 minutes, depending on road conditions and availability. The problem is if someone suffers a severe heart attack they could die before it arrives.

What is a First Responder?

A First Responder is a communitybased volunteer who is trained to respond to any life-threatening medical emergency (chest pains, breathing difficulties and unconscious

SAVE LIVES persons) in Nettleham and give early basic life support and defibrillation, if required, prior to the ambulance paramedics arrival.

How does the system work?

When a 999 call is received at ambulance headquarters, not only is an ambulance dispatched to the casualty’s location, but, if the request is deemed to be a life threatening emergency, they also contact the on-call First Responder in Nettleham who is instructed to attend. While the ambulance is on its way the First Responder will be able to start giving vital early basic life support and dramatically improve the casualty’s chances of survival.

You will receive full training at the LIVES Head Office in Horncastle and then be part of this valuable scheme.

Patient Satisfaction Survey The results of this survey conclude that our Practice scored above the National Benchmark in virtually all categories; short falls were generally in the “adminstration” area; standards of care and medical issues were marked above the average benchmark.

An Action Plan is being formulated to address the points raised, which should, for example, lead to extra sessions at lunchtime for Nettleham and it is intended to carry out a review of services at both Cherry Willingham and Nettleham surgeries.

EFT - A NEW ERA IN HEALING Over the past few years there has been a steady rise in the number of people using holistic therapies to improve their health and well-being.

1st NETTLEHAM 4th LINCOLN SCOUT GROUP REPORT All the Christmas parties and events are now well out of the way and we are looking forward to an exciting 2007.

This year the Scout Movement is celebrating its centenary year and we have lots of activities and events planned over the next twelve months - camps, adventure weekends, pop concerts and a World Jamboree - to name just a few.

This year we will be holding our Gang Show to celebrate 100 Years of Song. Tickets will soon be available from Beckside Newsagents: £4.00 adult and £2.00 child (cost fixed at last year’s prices!). There will be two performances on Saturday 10 March at 2.30pm and 7.00pm.

Perhaps this may take you back to your own time in scouts/cubs, or even as a leader - if anyone has any old photographs they would like to share with the group, please contact me - it would be great to put together a special Centenary 2007 album.

Nettleham Scouts & Guides HQ were very pleased to receive a donation of £100 on Friday 2 February, at a meeting of the 1st Nettleham Guides.

The presentation of the cheque was made by a guide, Amy Tollerton-Helson, who is the grandaughter of David Helson, Chairman of the Youth Committee of Lincoln Lions, and was gratefully accepted on behalf of all the young people that use the premises by Rod Mountford, Chairman of the HQ Committee.

The money was raised over the Christmas period at the illuminated home of Rachael and Dave Tollerton, 39 Highfields. Unfortunately, Mr Tollerton was unable to attend the presentation and the Lions Club President, Parvin Juttla, who wished to be present, also had other committments on that evening.

WI NEWS Nettleham WI rounded off a good year with the traditional Christmas celebration including entertainment, a wonderful buffet brought by the members and a glass of wine. It made a great start to the festive season!

2007 started with a visit from Mr Bloggs talking about “Chi Kung” and cultivating universal energy for health. This proved to be fascinating and has many of the ladies now considering taking up this ancient art.

We are all looking forward to February’s meeting with the topical talk “Going Green - it’s easier than you think!”

Ladies, please remember that visitors are always welcome at all our meetings and, of course, new members too!

Nettleham Heritage Association Winter Talk Anne Boyle on Pottery: from Pre-history to Post Medieval Roman pots are of diverse forms and types, as the Romans traded with many places.

The pots were in general wheel-thrown and kiln-fired. In a kiln, the pots were not in contact with the fire and temperatures greater than 1,000° Celsius could be achieved.

On the evening of Wednesday, 24 January, Anne Boyle came to talk to us on the above subject. Anne works for Archaeology Projects Services and is an expert on pottery, clearly a service which is much in demand by archaeologists.

It was a bitterly cold, icy evening and despite that, and illness in our ranks, twelve people were present. Anne felt this was a good number as she had some practical tasks at the end, which required much cudgeling of brains.

Anne introduced us to the idea that there are only three main types of manufacture of pots – by hand, on a wheel or moulded.

Two or three of these methods were often used in the same era, but one was usually the most common in any given age. The potter’s wheel was not introduced until the late Iron Age. Handmade pots were either pinch pots, shaped out of a lump of clay, or coiled pots, built up using long thin cylinders of clay. These are often fired in a bonfire or clamp kiln, consisting of a fire of wood built around a group of pots. The resulting pots are not highly fired and quite soft, a bit like the texture of soggy digestive biscuits. With this method you get dull soft colours, mainly browns, pinks, greys and buffs, sometimes showing a fire cloud, or sooty blemish, where the pot has been adjacent to the fuel.

Coiled pots can have a join void, a point of weakness between coils. Handmade pots often have random inclusions (impurities or additions) of, for example, flint or shell. They tend to have uneven surfaces, sagging bases, uneven rims and are asymmetrical.

Moulded pots were very common in the Roman era and this method was revived in the post Medieval age. ‘Samian’ ware, the characteristic moulded Roman pot, orange in colour with friezes of people and animals often bordered by a pattern or lines. These pots have shiny surfaces, produced by coating with slip (watery clay, possibly including a colouring agent) before firing.

Wheel-thrown pots were introduced here, it is thought, in the late Iron Age. The early wheels were either kickwheels (operated by kicking it round by foot) or turntables (turned by hand on a table top). These pots frequently have marks on the base resulting from them being cut from the wheel with a wire. The markings give a clue as to the speed of the wheel when the pot was removed: straight lines on the base indicate the wheel was stationary, slightly curved lines that the wheel was moving slowly and strong swirls that the wheel was moving quickly. The inclusions (additional material in the clay) are lined up neatly in wheel thrown pots, the shapes are more even, the walls thinner and the finish better.

The temperature could be controlled more easily and the resultant pots were of brighter colours. Roman pots were well made and can look very modern - the forms included flagons, amphorae, bowls, beakers, mortaria and dishes. They were often slip coated. However native produced pots were also used.

Glazes were introduced around the eleventh century. The early ones were of white lead and vinegar or lead sulphide.

These were applied dry or splashed on.

Wet glazes, in glass suspensions, occur from the thirteenth century onwards.

Using just lead resulted in an orange to green hue, whilst the addition of copper created bright green; iron gave brown, dark green or green, and manganese produced a purple colour.

This is a summary of the main points of Anne’s fascinating talk. Afterwards we split into four groups and were given six or seven fragments of pot and asked to put them in age order.

We all failed miserably! I have less excuse than everyone else, as I had done the exercise on a previous occasion and still couldn’t get it right! However, it was all good-humoured and it gave us a chance to handle the pots and discuss them in our groups. We all enjoyed this despite our lack of success.

I thanked Anne for her brilliant talk, then tea, coffee and biscuits were served by Cathy Platt. Thanks Cathy, we were all ready for some refreshments after all that brain work! Thanks, too, for all who turned out on such a cold evening and to David Gibbons, who provided the much-needed technical equipment for the visual presentation.

This style of pot is characteristic of the pre-historic and early Anglo-Saxon periods.

In the pre-historic era there were a very limited number of forms - beaker, urn and pot. Early Anglo-Saxon pots were similarly restricted to mainly jars, urns and bowls, though later pitchers (early jugs), crucibles and storage jars were introduced.

However they were often stamped, embossed or incised with decoration.

In a Nutshell Hello again, Spring is coming and I am full of the joys of life! Flowers are springing up everywhere in Vicar’s Wood - it’s my favourite place at this time of year.

And I’m looking forward to seeing all the wondeful displays of flowers in the village again this year. The planters, hanging baskets and window boxes all go to make Nettleham a really beautiful village in which to live.

But sadly, there are a small number of persons who don’t seem to like this though and delight in tearing out the plants and destroying them. What a crying shame!

I was passing the Old School the other day and I noticed that the hanging baskets on the front of the building, always such a magnificent display for all to enjoy in the summer, are actually padlocked to the hanging brackets to avoid them being stolen. Whatever has the world come to?!

And, worse still, I was taking a short cut round the back of the building when I spotted no less than five broken windows which had been boarded up. This is just so sad - why would anyone want to damage property in this way. After all, The Old School is a treasured historic building which belongs to the community - and this includes everyone in the village. I bet it will cost a few bob to put that right - money which could have been much better spent elsewhere.

Sight Savers

Occasionally I am visited by some of my chums from other villages and I am getting rather fed up with their taunts about how their village has just won the Best Kept Village competition, when I know that Nettleham is better than any of them really.

So this year, I would ask you all to make a big effort to keep the village neat and tidy ready for when the judges come later in the year. Don’t let me down, will you?!

Readers may remember that in the last edition of the magazine I had a few things to say about mud around the village and how it spoiled my lovely glossy coat. Well this is about something else that’s brown and sticky (and we’re not talking sticks here!) which I’ve trodden in from time to time during my rambles.

Now dogs aren’t my favourite creatures at the best of times (the way they bark and chase me frightens me to death!) but I can put up with them as long as their owners clean up the mess their pets leave and don’t leave it lying around for me to tread in. If I go home once more with this on my feet, I shall be for the high jump! So please clear up after your dog for my sake!

A Thank You to Nettleham Village Readers may remember the article on page 29 of the autumn 2006 edition of Nettleham News which featured the annual Fancy Dress Bike Ride by members of the Scothern Cycling Club, when they visited Nettleham to raise much-needed money for local charities earlier in the year.

Well, they did it again this year and on Sunday 15 October 2006 some very strange sights were seen round the village, not least of which was a bout of sumo wrestling on the Green, refereed by a Roman centurion!

The riders would like to thank everyone in the village who donated money on the day.

They collected a magnificent total of over ÂŁ250, which has since been given to the Lincolnshire Ambucopter and St Barnabas Hospice.

They all said they had a great time here in the village and I’m sure readers will be pleased to welcome them back again in 2007.

Kindly sent in by Ken Doughty, this photograph, believed to have been taken in the 1930s or 1940s, shows the cottage which used to stand at the junction of Hall Lane and Riseholme Lane. Ken, who is now in his eighties and lives at Laughterton, lived there when he was farm manager for the Hood family, but cannot recall when or why the property was finally demolished.

Nettleham Bowls Club Open Day The summer of 2006 was ideal for outdoor bowls! The scorching afternoon sun had the players sweltering under large hats, and the consumption of bottled water increased dramatically. The balmy evenings were enjoyed by all.

It was a successful season on the green with the City of Lincoln Evening Team winning their league and the Afternoon A Team also topping their league. The annual dinner in November was a great success with eighty-three members and guests attending the event at Hemswell Court.

During the winter months, social evenings have been held in the pavilion and these have proved very popular. The less than normal freezing winter days will soon have gone and a new outdoor season will commence on the 21 April.

New members are always welcome and to this end an Open Day will be held on Sunday 29th of April at 2.00pm. If the weather is inclement we will try again on Sunday 6 May. Do come along and have a go at finding the jack! We will supply the bowls, but please come in flat shoes or trainers, no heels. See you on the 29 April!

NETTLEHAM LIBRARY NEWS READER RECOMMENDATIONS We have recently added a brand new blue display unit to the Library which will feature a number of changing displays to tempt you into trying something new.

To launch it we are asking you to recommend any books you are returning that you really enjoyed, which can then be put into the display for other readers to choose. And if you do borrow a book from this display, we’d love to hear whether you felt it was a good read too!

We have also been asking you to jot down your favourite authors for us, and we are now in the process of updating the shelf talkers in adult fiction with this information. And, if you are still stuck for a good read, please ask to see our ‘Who Writes Like Who’ book for ideas of who writes similar stories to the authors you already enjoy.

COMPUTER COURSE The computer course that we run is as popular as ever, with yet another group having just finished it in February. Some of the comments we have received are: ‘Its very good’ ‘Very useful’ ‘Relaxing course with no pressure’ ‘Very instructive in a lovely atmosphere’ ‘Excellent course for the notice’ We are currently taking names for February 2008 (yes, 2008!) so if you are interested and can wait that long, please call into the Library to put your name down. The course runs on a Thursday morning in term-time from 9.30 - 11.30am for approximately 16 weeks. As it is a Lincoln College course there is a requirement to attend 80% of the sessions.

INTRODUCING KOMPASS The newest website for the Library Service to subscribe to is Kompass.

This online resource can be reached via the homepage on the People’s Network computers in the Library. or from your own computer by going to www.lincolnshire.gov.uk then following the links first to Libraries, then to Kompass. There are instructions on how to carry out a search available in the Library, so please ask if you would like a copy of them, although help is available on the website.

The Kompass website is one of the best places to find information about companies and what they do. More

than 23 million references to the products and services of over 1.8 million companies are stored in the database.

NEWS FOR OUR YOUNGER READERS Books are beautiful and fun and full of ideas, but it’s children and the adults who share books with them, who make the recipes, craft, science experiments, history and stories come alive.

If you want guidance on how to be hooked on books as a family, just ask us, or have a look at the Talk to Your Baby page, and links on this website: www.literacytrust.org.uk We love having babies and toddlers in the library, especially at Rhyme Times, which take place on the last Friday of every month at 2.00pm, just ask at the counter for a flyer. Children can join the library the day they are born, although mums might have other things on their mind!

Bookstart, who provide free gifts of books in lovely bright bags to babies, toddlers and schoolchildren, also gift Bookcrawl stickers and certificates as a reward to little ones who join and use the library. We would love to see more Bookcrawlers!

We had a lovely time with the Nettleham brownies recently, making Charlotte’s Web mobiles. Two members of the brownie pack made their brownie promise at the library, we felt very honoured. We are always happy to arrange group visits for children. If anyone would like the template for a Charlotte’s Web mobile, just ask at the library counter.

Helena Pielichaty announced the winners at a celebration evening on 17 January. Shortlisted author, Pete Johnson, gave an inspirational and entertaining talk about becoming a writer and the evening closed with an exuberant audience-participating performance by ‘Potty’ poet, Chris White. You can borrow these books from any Lincolnshire library.

Lots of book awards took place earlier in the year, so if you are wondering how to spend your World Book Day token, you could borrow the winners of the Nestlé Children’s book prize from the library to see if you would like to buy them.

The gold award in the 9 - 11 age group went to the colourful and heart thumping Victorian thriller The Diamond of Drury Lane by Julia Golding. David Robert’s Mouse Noses on Toast won the 6 - 8 year old category, - it’s a funny and quirky little story about mice on a rescue mission in a very strange restaurant. The five and under category was won by That Rabbit belongs to Emily Brown, and it’s a beautifully illustrated book and a funny little story.

Link Romania Family Shoebox Appeal - Total 39,845 Shoeboxes Link Romania is a division of the Charity Partnership for Growth

LINK ROMANIA FUNDRAISING I know you’ll be pleased to learn that the total number of shoeboxes received by Link Romania last year was 39,845. Isn’t that wonderful!

An increase of over 4,000 on last year’s total. So many happy families and so many beaming smiles, as well as tears of joy, as a result of our boxes. Thank you all once again for caring and sharing.

Many of you are already busily knitting hats, mitts, scarves, etc, for this year’s Shoebox Appeal. Knowing as we do now how low temperatures can get in the winter months, your help is invaluable.

Thank you so much.

As you know, Romania joined the European Union in January and this is really good news. However, it will be many years before the folk we help will benefit and they still need our care. Do have a look at www.linkromania.co.uk to read of the many ways in which help is required house building, clean water projects, food parcels, to name but a few.

Naturally, funds are still needed for the Skills Centre and to this end we have arranged a Coffee Morning on Friday, 9 March at Church View from 10.00 12.00. All the usual stalls, raffle, etc, not forgetting our delicious tea or coffee.

All kinds of help would be appreciated and do please bring any gifts with you.

Of course, if you are unable to join us, please feel free to leave any cakes/gifts at 14 Sudbrooke Lane.

You will be delighted to hear that we managed to send a fantastic 39,845 shoeboxes over to Romania and the Republic of Moldova, an increase of over 4,000 on last year’s total! Congratulations to all concerned! We are extremely grateful to so many people (too many to name!) who voluntarily worked so hard and went to such lengths to make Christmas happy for those fortunate enough to receive a shoebox this year.

Sadly, over 2,000 of the boxes had no £2 money contribution attached to them - this is a much larger number than in previous years. We really cannot stress enough the importance of attaching this money donation towards transport. Link Romania do have to pay individually for each and every box to be transported, so money that could have been used towards our projects - helping Romania’s poor - is now being used for this. If anyone still has outstanding cheques to send in, do please do so as soon as possible, or if you would like to make a donation towards covering this deficit we really would be extremely grateful.

We have had a lot of queries about what will happen to the work of the charity when Romania becomes port of the EU in January 2007. Political changes of this kind take years to alter the lives of the ordinary people significantly and for those we help, the poorest, the socially ostracised, the homeless - it may be decades.

Does Romania still need our help now it’s joining the EU? YES - We are glad that Romania is joining the EU. It will now be entitled to access funds that will help rebuild their infrastructure - their roads and schools. Cities will get rebuilt and people that are educated and have possibilities will flourish. However Link Romania isn’t working with these people. We’re working with the very poorest and most marginalised and these people aren’t going to receive any help for many years to come. They will of course benefit from better roads, etc, but while they have no money to access education, hospitals or pay the higher prices for goods that will appear in the shops they will get poorer.

Link Romania is pledged to help the people that the state doesn’t help. Romania as a country may become richer, but it will take time for this to filter down to the bottom of society where we are working.

Does Romania still need our shoeboxes next year?

YES - Having just returned from Romania it is difficult to describe how grateful people are at such simple things. The stationery items are greeted with such smiles by the children! You would think they had been given the most expensive present on earth rather than felt tips!

The same reaction by the older people when they received their gifts of shampoo and soap.

More tears than you can imagine. Some of the people that we give shoeboxes to really do have nothing and it was hard to go into places that you wouldn’t allow a dog to live in. Just mud houses at the mercy of the weather without water, electricity, or heating. Small children playing on the mud floors of their houses as flies buzz around their heads. Washing facilities that 53

consist of a bucket and a plastic bowl. Kitchens that are one ring and few utensils. This is terrible poverty and we need to be helping these people.

Does Link Romania do anything else for the rest of the year?

YES - We support projects that fight the war on poverty all year round. Training and housing for ex-orphanage boys, helping HIV children in Petrosani, supporting education and clean water projects in Sighisoara, working in the shanty towns in Rasi, helping with food parcels and house rebuilding, medical assistance for the poor, etc. We employ Romanian nationals to work amongst their own people to help rebuild lives and communities.

As you know, Link Romania has always had a policy of seeking out the people who have a real and immediate need. The poor and homeless whom we help cannot wait for the possible future effects of the EU reforms and grants as they are needy today. Maybe one day, there will be an end to these terrible poverty conditions but until then, we will continue to put ourselves in the breach. If you are still asking if Romania still needs help when it enters the EU, remember that the UK, which is considered rich, still has homeless charities, refuges, and a need for services for the poor and disadvantaged.

Romania needs even more help.

Two final points to finish. Firstly, please think about making a financial gift to Link Romania in some way in the next year. We really do need your help. Think about joining the 500 for £5 Club to help Link Romania fight the war on poverty - see our website at www.linkromania.co.uk or think about making a gift either by cheque or donating on-line.

Poetry SOLACE IN SUDBROOKE WOODS I wander across the woodland, Losing all sense of time and space; Captivated by the seclusion, Which pervades the lonely place.

Through the neglected, green dreamland, O’er close-packed trunks and hidden dells, I hear the breeze shake tinsel leaves, And sway pine-needles, as it swells.

The shyest birds make themselves heard, As mammals scrabble ‘neath cover, Whilst I attune my straining mind, To detect where wild bees hover.

But I have company enough, For hosts of voices reach my ears; Spirits of man, and beast, and plant, Assail me, from long-distant years.

The woods breathe sylvan mystery, With lingering hints of the past, Which I embrace with all senses, Whilst the delicate magic lasts.

When gentle dusk falls, I must leave, For home where I face mundane care.

I bid farewell to the haven, Whose secrets, I’ve begun to share.

A COUNTRYSIDE STORM Dark glowering banks of cloud Overwhelm the hazy sun, Obscuring its reassuring presence.

Chill rain begins to teem And the downpour becomes torrential, As it is whipped into a lashing deluge By a rapidly strengthening wind.

Low-lying meadows are inundated, Forcing flowers to peer forlornly Through pools of discoloured water, That extinguish their brightness.

The wind blusters arrogantly, Making vulnerable human kind Attend to its cries, Which become caterwauling howls.

It tears at the eaves of dwellings, Buffeting windows And hammering at doors, As if demanding immediate entry.

Destructive forked lightning Attacks the earth, Illuminating the countryside, Whilst resultant thunderclaps Explode angrily.

Intimidated rural folk Reel under the unwarranted assault, Until the storm passes its crescendo.

When the dazzling flashes of white light And their attendant cacophony Begin to lessen, The victims of the onslaught Are left with numbed nerves.

Their flagging spirits are gradually restored As the fading echoes of thunder Disappear into the distance, Whilst the wind dissipates in strength.

At last the clouds thin, to reveal A melancholy blur of blue, And the sun shimmers fitfully; Seemingly overawed By the exhausted fury of the elements.

When I told her my size She opened her drawers.

THE SPIDER IN THE LOO There’s a spider in the loo And, no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the devil out.

He spins a web in there And sits and laughs, I do declare, While I try to knock him to the floor.

With broom, and poker too, I descend upon the loo, But he sits and laughs at me, I’m very sure, For he curls into a ball In a corner, very small, And goes to sleep until I disappear.

Then that spider in the loo Thinks “I’ll get one back at you” And out he comes and spins another web!

While I, in my despair, Go home and leave him there And have a drink and stagger into bed.

Next morning, bright and new, I peep with hope anew That the spider off his perch fell in the night.

But no such luck, I fear, For he is still up there And I’m sure he said: “Blow you mate, I’m all right!”.

Now what else can I do To that spider in the loo?

For I am really getting desperate now.

So once he is asleep, Up to him close I’ll creep And shout so loud he’ll tremble at the row.

Now up the wall I go All set to let him know I will not stand more nonsense out of him.

But what do you think I find As his web I do unwind?

The whole darned family’s moved in!

They scatter far and wide In every corner do they hide All sizes scattering in every way.

So I go in each day With my broom to sweep away The cobwebs spun upon the toilet wall But one day, I’ll catch you And, believe me, when I do, It will be a day you won’t recall!

For I will give you such a clout And with a joyful shout, Will squash you flat against the toilet wall!

A NEW VOICE ON THE PHONE

A SAD LITTLE TALE ABOUT THE MAIL

O what happened to poor Mr H? He’s gone and left a big blank in his place.

Now, when I phone Division Intent upon my mission Of getting some help in this place, A strange voice at the end of the phone Listens to my tale of woe And announces with glee: “I’m Mr D And I’ll sort you out, you know”.

So once more I sit down to write, When I finish my work here at night, To tell my new friend Of the things he must mend Before all the fuses we blow.

In the kitchen we start with poor Wally (He’s the big water boiler - he’s quite poorly) When boiling point he nears, He’s in agony I fear And all the lights in the building go crazy.

Now we go on to the loo, Where the light switch needs fiddling with too.

It doesn’t work right and every night I must wiggle it to black out the loo.

In the men’s block, the first light, I know, Had a loose wire or so, But up there I’ve not probed Since I last washed the globe To see if it’s been seen to.

So your help I need, you see, With my problems at NDC, And I, in return, will try to help patiently My new voice at the end of the phone.

Charity Challenge Trek to Machu Picchu Some of you may remember my brother, Tim Hensman, who died of cancer 20 years ago this year. Despite all those years, he is never far from our thoughts and I decided this year to do something for the cancer charities that heIped him so much.

I had always wanted to ‘do’ the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and Charity Challenge provided me with the opportunity. I had to pay all my costs and then raise as much as possibIe for CLIC/SARGENT. CLIC stands for Cancer and Leukaemia in Children and is the cancer charity that was set up in Bristol by Bob Woodward, who lost his own son to cancer. SARGENT stands for the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children.

Sir Malcolm Sargent was very involved with children with cancer and the charity was set up alter his death by Miss Sylvia Dailey, who had been his secretary for many years. These charities have now amalgamated as they both did similar things.

This time also gave the group a good opportunity to get to know each other, and for a group of very mixed people, backgrounds and ages, each doing the trek for their own personal reasons and charities, everybody seemed to bond and get on very well, which was a blessing, as from here the trekking was to start in earnest.

The following days were pretty tough going ascending, descending, levelling out and then ascending again and so on covering an average 15kms per day over mountainous terrain and reaching heights of 4,215 metres.

However the pure beauty of this reasonably untouched region, if not the camaraderie of the group, helped ease the aching legs, lungs, shoulders, feet, etc. It really is an area of astounding natural beauty and feels a lot

For example, and one of the most valuable things, was to set up accommodation for the parents and brothers and sisters of the children being treated. As you may imagine, when your child is ill and in hospital away from home, to have accommodation provided is such enormous support both emotionally and financially. They also help with transport, with extra tuition when so much schooling has been lost and many other practical things, as well as the extra funding for specialist nurses and doctors and research, to name but a few things.

Anyway, my idea was to do this Trek to raise some money, as Tim had wanted to do, for the charities that helped him.

As the date of going got closer, I got more worried! But I eventually made it to Heathrow for 5.30am on Friday 22 September and met up with the rest of the group - 3 fellows (including myself) and 20 ladies! I wasn’t sure at this point whether I was in for a hard time or a brilliant one!!

After saying goodbye to my concept of time and what seemed like an eternity thereafter we arrived in Lima late evening and an overnight stopover in the Peruvian capital.

An early start and this time a short flight into the Andes and Cuzco, which was to be our main base camp for the trek. We spent a couple of days easy walking around here, a quite beautiful city, to take in some of the culture, architecture but mostly to get used (at least to some extent) to the altitude 3,350 metres. I was lucky enough not to suffer too much from the effects.

Again aching limbs abated as we arrived at the Sun Gate (as the Incas once did) to look down at Machu Picchu itself, totally inspiring!

To walk around the well known face of this civilisation and to take it all in with a group of people, many of whom I would now call friends, all doing it for a charity personal to themselves, was very moving.

I now feel I’ve given a little something back to CLIC/SARGENT and would like to thank everybody who either helped or sponsored me. It really was an experience that will stay with me for a very long time to come.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR BABY BEFORE THEY CAN SPEAK? Cherry Willingham Community School Cherry Willingham Community School Joins the Club Further good news about its academic performance has been received by Cherry Willingham Community School.

The school celebrated its best ever GCSE results in 2006 (62.5% 5A* - C).

Each year the school has always been one of the best comprehensive schools in Lincolnshire for its value-added progress, in other words exceeding the amount of progress that a child is expected to make from 11 - 16.

The school is a specialist sports college and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust has informed the school that it has become a member of its Most Improved Club - the group of specialist schools which have improved results by more than ten points against the 2003 5A* - C figures.

Headteacher David Mills was naturally “delighted” to hear the news. “It is encouraging to find that the hard work put in by teachers and pupils, supported by their parents, has been recognised by such an important body.”

How? The answer is simple, if not perhaps immediately obvious - it’s sign language. To those in the know, using sign language is a wonderful way to communicate with your baby before they develop sufficient control over their voice to talk.

The school has been invited to a celebration dinner in London at the end of February.

The Babysigners teaching organisation is a nationwide chain of teachers that use lessons based on the acclaimed work and signing system of leading world expert, Dr Joseph Garcia. All the lessons use British Sign Language (BSL) throughout, so that your baby’s signs can also be understood by nurseries and other professional carers.

I am part of the Babysigners teaching network and am now running classes in Lincolsnhire to help parents learn how to use these signs easily and simply in their everyday life.

The classes are small and friendly, (typically about 8 parents and their babies) and are more like a playgroup than a lesson, with songs, puppets and stories to keep it all fun.

RB Camera Club RB’s annual Photographic Exhibition is on at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life until 25 March 2007.

The exhibition was opened by Ralph Bennett ARPS of Newark. The Reg Stevenson Trophy was awarded to Mandy Watmore for her picture The Red Shoes, whilst Mike Hamblett’s On the Sea Shore was awarded a certificate for best panel picture. Leland Osten was awarded a certificate for Meadlowlark Dragonfly - best Lincoln (Nebraska) picture.

Nettleham Cricket Club: the Start of a New Season It’s that time of the year when we dust the whites off and get our cricketing heads back on.

It’s also the time for the ladies at The Tea Cosy to start ordering more bacon and sausages for our weekly pilgrimage - this is was our meeting place for every game last season, home and away, and this was the birth of “The Breakfast Club”. See you very soon ladies.

On the playing side I am very pleased to have been elected as captain of the Saturday First XI with Martin Connor again captaining the Second XI. I have enjoyed working with Martin over the past five years; we have a good working relationship mainly based on me calling him on a Friday night or Saturday morning and telling him I’m going to have to take his opening bowler or batsmen with me for the day! We also have two Sunday teams - the captains remain the same as last season which sees Glenn Mitchell captaining the First XI and Adam Hickingbotham taking the reigns for the Second XI.

The new season approaches and brings new challenges for Nettleham CC. This year we will be looking to build on last season’s performances, as we will no longer be an unknown quantity and we will be looking to establish ourselves in the county’s top league.

Last season was the club’s debut season in the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League, with the team managing a respectable mid-table finish. Since the last edition of Nettleham News we held our annual AGM, which saw some changes to our committee - the main change being our chairman David Wheatley standing down and Chris Brown picking up the baton.

I would like to show my appreciation to David for all the work he has done since he took over the post in 2001. I had a very good working relationship with David and I am pleased he will be remaining on the committee to help push the club even further forward. Chris Brown has stepped up from secretary and I am looking forward to working alongside him. Taking over from Chris will be Richard Hare.

Richard is a past chairman of the club and it is good to see him back involved.

As you are reading this, nets will be well and truly underway and running every Saturday until 31 March 2007. I would like to thank our Australian overseas player Jarrod Allan for his contribution for the past two seasons. He won the club bowling award in 2005 and then the club batting award in 2006.

Jarrod was a tremendous character both on and away from the field of play and I wish him all the best for which ever way life takes him.

With Jarrod gone it means I have had the arduous task of scouring the world for another quality overseas player, which is by no means an easy task, but hopefully I have found one (if things go according to plan). All I can say at the minute is he is an Australian 6ft 5in opening bowler (like Brett Lee?). I will report more on the overseas player in the summer edition.

We have also completed the signing of local player Nathan Poundall from Hartsolme in the Lincs Premier League.

Nathan has just turned 18 and he has represented the county from the age of 12 through to 17. He is an up-and-coming young player of the right age and right attitude, to whom I am prepared to give a chance at this higher standard of cricket.

So welcome Nathan, I hope it all goes well for you.

2006 New Years Eve Celebration at Nettleham Village Hall Alison and Siobhan thank all the attendees for coming and supporting this event with all the proceeds in aid of Candles. We hope that you all enjoyed the evening!

As you may be aware, Candles is a charity that provides funds for Professor Eremin, who is a world leader in immunotherapy research, which means working the body’s immune system to fight disease, rather than surgery or treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

As a result of the research a groundbreaking treatment for cancer is on trial in Lincolnshire, with all the patients being from Lincolnshire.

Professor Oleg Eremin’s unique research into cancer-fighting cells at Lincoln County Hospital requires continual financial support.

Siobhan King and Alison Ackerman presenting a cheque for £670.00 raised from the Nettleham 2006 New Years Eve event to Pam Connock for Candles.

News from Nettleham Pre-School Playgroup The Village Hall, Nettleham Registered Charity No. 518013 Ofsted Registered

We have had a busy time at the end of last year with our children enjoying our Christmas party, with not only a rather special visit from Father Christmas, but also managing to bounce some of their energy off on our bouncy assault course!

We also staged our Nativity play which was enjoyed by all and many thanks go to our children and staff for working so hard to put on a wonderful performance.

Our children have many exciting themes to experience this term with the focus on Chinese New Year activities, rhymes and traditional tales. Some magnificent Chinese lanterns have been created, the children have been tasting prawn crackers at snack time and also learning a Chinese Dragon dance, which all forms part of developing their knowledge and understanding of the world and different cultures. There has also been much activity in the culinary department, with iced tea and fairy cakes being made by the children.

We are organising an Easter Extravaganza on Saturday 31 March.

This will take place at the Village Hall from 11.00am - 3.00pm.

We have a number of activities planned including an Easter Egg hunt, decorating Easter biscuits and a colouring competition.

Details of the colouring competition will be made available nearer the event date.

There will also be a second-hand toy stall, children’s tombola, refreshments and other various stalls. If you have any second-hand toys which you would like to donate, please call Emma on (01522) 595177 and we will be happy to arrange collection.

FROM LINCOLNSHIRE LIFE TO TURKISH DELIGHTS! The sun glistening across the water, the ducks paddling in the shallows and people relaxing in the warmth of some winter sunshine. The Beck at Nettleham you would imagine, but no, this is over three thousand miles away in Turkey!

Originally the Paling family thought this would be a perfect place for a holiday home, a retreat to from the stresses and strains of daily life. A beautiful three-bedroomed, three-bathroomed villa was built in the pine forest for just this purpose.

Therein lies a story. Chris and Marysia Paling, with their daughter Charlotte, relocated from Lincolnshire to the Turkish “Turquoise Coast” in the Autumn of 2006.

Having lived for five years in Nettleham, and four more years in Sturton by Stow, the family embarked on a life-changing adventure in August, 2006.

But, having visited Gocek several times to oversee progress of the building of their holiday home, the family fell in love with the area, the people and the weather!

Gocek, their new home, is a small town nestling between the stunning pine forests of the Taurus Mountains and the sparkling clear water of the Aegean coastline.

Originally a small fishing village, Gocek has emerged as one of the places to visit in the Mediterranean, heaven for boating and sailing enthusiasts, with one of the finest natural harbours in the region.

The beauty is that it remains unspoilt by tourism, as it sits in the midst of a natural conservation area, strictly controlled by the Turkish Government. Over-development is prohibited and the opportunities for new buildings are strictly limited and controlled.

Deciding to move permanently to Gocek, another villa was commissioned as the new family home, duly completed ahead of time in August, 2006. Charlotte, our daughter, has settled very quickly into the Turkish way of life and attends a wonderful small private Turkish school; apparently she has already acquired a wonderful Turkish accent and Mum and Dad are trailing behind, but making steady progress!

With our new home completed, the first villa in the pine forest above Gocek has now been fully furnished for holiday rentals. Named Birsey Degil which means “You’re Welcome” in Turkish, visitors from Lincolnshire can be assured of a very warm welcome should they wish to come and see our little piece of paradise for themselves.
