A warm welcome to the summer 2006 edition of Nettleham News - I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it and find all the news, views and information of interest.

It’s an exciting time for Nettleham - as previously announced in the spring edition of the magazine - in this edition you will find the Village Plan Questionnaire starting on page 27.

I strongly urge all residents to become involved in this important milestone in the history and development of our village - it will play a key role in influencing what Nettleham will be like in years to come.

The questionnaire will be on the Parish Council website via a link at www.nettleham.info and it is believed that we are the first village in the UK to offer this facility! Nettleham sets the standard which others follow (yet again!) and residents are requested, wherever possible, to use this method of completing the questionnaire, as it will assist greatly in the subsequent analysis of all the data.

And even better - Nettleham News is offering a crisp £20 note to each of five entries drawn at random from all the questionnaire returns.

But if you haven’t got access to the internet (don’t forget there are free internet facilities at the library!), or simply don’t want to use this method, then that’s fine - use the paper version in this magazine instead and you will still be eligible for the draw.

There are lots of questions, but please don’t be too concerned, because many of them will not apply to you personally and you can simply leave them blank and move on. Altogether it will probably take around 45 minutes.

If anyone, for whatever reason, is having difficulty in completing the questions, or is not sure what to do, then help is at hand - simply telephone one of the Steering Group members between 9.00am and 9.00pm and arrangements will be made for someone to assist you (see page 27).

I am delighted to be able to tell you that the successful publication of the third edition of this village directory has once again enabled a donation of £200 to be made to a local charity.

This edition of the magazine contains the questionnaire associated with the Nettleham Parish Plan (see next column). Comprising 16 pages, the inclusion of this document means that the space available for other village news items is considerably reduced and if anyone has sent in material for publication and it has not been included, I must apologise and will endeavour to accommodate it in the next (autumn) edition, if it is not time-sensitive.

The Halifax Closure I’m sure everyone in the village knows that from 29 June 2006, the Halifax is closing its doors in Nettleham. You read in the newspapers about villages up and down the country losing their bank and post office facilities, but you never think that it will happen to you.

Well now it has and, like most people, I was dismayed and disappointed to hear of this news I use it regularly and it will cause me a great deal of inconvenience.

I wrote to the Halifax to enquire the reasons why the decision to close this agency had been taken, and their reply appears on page 11. As you would expect, their response contains all the usual customer service-speak which you receive from large corporate businesses when voicing dissatisfaction. They very kindly point out that there are three other Halifax outlets in the locality, but they fail to understand that not everyone will be prepared (or able) to get in a car, or a bus, in order to use their services. It’s a sad development for our village.

I also asked John Carr Financial Services to comment on the situation and Terry Carr has kindly detailed events leading to the closure of this valuable facility in the village, also reproduced on page 11.

The final paragraph in the column suggests that an alternative source of banking services may become available in the village - I sincerely hope there is a positive outcome.

This year it is the Nettleham Pre-school Playgroup, based in the village hall, which provides an important service for youngsters in the village.

The staff, parents, volunteers and committee members all work hard to provide the very best for the children and are constantly seeking new ways to raise funds to maintain this excellent facility in our community.

I hope the donation goes some way to help them in this worthwhile endeavour (see page 71).

Nettleham Parish Council News We have now come to the end of another 5-year term of the Parish Council. Of the previous 12 Parish Councillors, 2 have decided to stand down, Richard Hare (Chairman) and Terry Woods (Chair of the Finance Committee).

We are sorry to see both these able people leave the Council after working so diligently on behalf of the people of Nettleham for so long. We all owe them many thanks for all the hours they have committed for the benefit of this community, not just in the past 5 years, but also over the previous years, when they served on the Parish Council.

As there were only eleven people standing for the Council this time, there was no need for elections this year. The new Council will now be endeavouring to co-opt another resident onto the Council to make the total up to 12 again.

As mentioned previously, a Community Panel has been established to bring issues of concern in the community to the notice of the local police force and the police are required to act on issues raised.

An issue raised by the Parish Council was that of inconsiderate parking and, in particular, parking on the verges in the village.

Our representative on the panel, Mr Norris, has reported back to us that the issue has been put at the top of the list of issues to be considered and the police have agreed to come back at their next meeting with some proposed solutions.

The Parish Plan Steering Committee has made rapid progress since the public meeting in January, and has now put together a questionnaire, which can be found on page 29 in this magazine.

It is hoped that replies will be received from a substantial number of households in the village, to give a real feel for what the people of Nettleham would like to see changed/improved over the coming 10 years. This is all about consultation, so your inputs are needed to enable us to make a difference and reflect what you want.

As well as the questionnaire in the magazine, residents will also be able to complete the questionnaire on line by visiting the Parish Council website. It is believed that this is the first time that a Parish Plan Questionnaire has been available on-line in the UK. It is hoped that most of the Nettleham questionnaires are completed this way, as it will save the committee and volunteers a lot of work entering the handwritten data in the system for analysis.

It is hoped to have the preliminary results by the end of September, with a further public meeting being anticipated before Christmas, to discuss the results of the analysis and then consult with service groups on the conclusions and possible methods of implementation.

Parish Council Cemetery The Parish Office frequently receives enquiries from residents and their representatives for information about the cost of burial at the Parish Cemetery.

It was finally agreed that a parking exclusion zone be established outside the school and stretching some distance in each direction along All Saints Lane.

Consultation has taken place with residents. A group of parents and residents attended the Parish Council Meeting and gave their views. About two-thirds of those surveyed were in favour of some sort of parking control.

This exclusion zone will prohibit cars from parking on the zig-zag lines between 8.30 9.30am and 3.00 - 4.00pm. It is hoped that having this parking exclusion zone will enable children to go to and from school in safety.

Vandalism

There has been some mindless vandalism in the village recently outside the Co-op along Vicarage Lane, where flower troughs were overturned one night. This is only one of several problems caused at that time.

The police have images of the suspects on CCTV and they will be taking action.

Street Lighting The County Council Highways Department will be inspecting all the street lighting in the village this year and subsequently replacing lamp-posts, where necessary.

I would like to submit to the Council for consideration the Annual Report for the period 1st April 2005 31st March 2006, being my first report to the Council as Chairman.

The year has been an extremely busy one for the Parish Council and I summarise below the main issues which have been addressed in relation to the business before it during the year. (a) Highway Matters The Council is concerned about the state of the roads in Nettleham at the present time and have been making representations to the County Council Highways Department for some time.

In April 2005 the Highways Department advised the Parish Council that the resurfacing of Deepdale Lane and Church Street were imminent, but nonetheless a year later the execution of such work remains outstanding.

However, following attendance at the February 2006 Parish Council meeting by the new Divisional Surveyor, we are now assured that once again these two roads are being given priority consideration, together with work on Washdyke Lane, and we are keenly awaiting a commencement date from the Highways Department. (b) Parish Council Website Information available on the Council’s website has been extended during the year. Arrangements have now been made for the quarterly editions of Nettleham News to be available on the website, together with the Parish Council’s Minutes, which are published upon approval.

These donations were awarded following consideration of the excellent voluntary work carried out by all sections of those organisations.

(d) Nettleham Parish Council Cemetery and Church Cemetery A considerable amount of work has been executed by way of tree maintenance and general care of these areas under the supervision of Cllr John Hill. Whilst not satisfying everybody in relation to the new “open aspect” afforded from the highway in relation to the cemetery, the work has been welcomed by almost all of the residents who have commented about it.

The Parish Council has also received the cemetery fees, details of which are included in the Parish Council Minutes. (e) Village Inspections Residents should be aware that village inspections are carried out by members of the Parish Council Property Committee at least once a year. Action is then taken to remedy any issues of concern. (f) Tree Work in the Village Extensive tree maintenance has been carried out in all parts of the village, again under the supervision of Cllr John Hill, who liaises with the County Council on such matters, where any trees or shrubs are on the highway, or for general pruning purposes. The County Council have delegated that function to the Parish Council. Any urgent issue concerning trees, reported to the Clerk to the Council or the Administrative Officer, are dealt with and investigated without any delay. (g) Refuse Disposal Site GreetwelI Lane This is a popular facility for residents of the village. Unfortunately, due to the storage of builders’ equipment on site, which rendered it unsafe, the Parish Council had no alternative other than to suspend operations until it was cleared. However, use of the site was re-introduced during the year and the Parish Council have now secured an agreement for its use, so it is hoped that this facility will continue for the foreseeable future. (h) Parish Council Premises The Parish Council have conformed with the Licensing Act 2003 and obtained a premises licence for the use of The Old School for organisations and private functions. (i) Sports Pavilion It has been some time since the Sports Pavilion in Mulsanne Park had been 7

redecorated. During the last year, the Council has spent approximately £18,000 in redecorating and refurbishing the Sports Pavilion. The premises are used extensively by the Sports Club using the field, but it will now also be utilised for some private functions when they cannot be accommodated in The Old School. (j) The Late Harry Dickinson Harry Dickinson acted as tree consultant to the Parish Council over a number of years and on occasions provided his services free of charge. He also facilitated the free gift of trees and shrubs to the Parish Council during the course of such consultancy.

During the year he died suddenly and the Parish Council’s condolences have been extended to his widow. In recognition to the service to Nettleham, a memorial tree has been planted in the extended burial area to the rear of the Parish Council cemetery. This land has not yet been brought into use for cemetery purposes, but has been subject to a tree planting and landscaping scheme, planned by Harry Dickinson and Cllr John Hill. (k) Interconnect Bus Service, Lincoln to Grimsby The Council, during the course of the year, were involved in discussions and consultations with Lincolnshire County Council concerning the erection of bus stops at principal points. The County Council installed raised kerbs for those who found it difficult to enter and alight from buses. The location and design of these bus stops did not meet everybody’s approval, but in the final analysis, the County Council took a decision after consultation. The Parish Council requested that the existing bus stops in the village centre not be altered, save that the one outside the former village institute where the kerb was re-positioned.

(I) Parish Charter The Council agreed the Parish Charter submitted by West Lindsey District Council which contained special provisions for those Councils who had gained the Quality Parish/Town Council status. As Nettleham had obtained this accreditation and those provisions for delegation of functions to be considered, the Parish Council agreed that at some stage in the future the following matters would be considered for discussion with the District Council to consider such delegation:

NETTLEHAM PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 1st April 2005 - 31st March 2006 • Street cleaning • Litter control • Street naming • Parking restrictions (and related matters) • Issue of bus and rail passes • Road safety matters • Tree Preservation Orders • Car parking • Cemeteries • Allotments In relation to cemeteries and allotments, they are in any event currently provided by the Parish Council. (m) Appointment of Handyman During the course of the year, the Parish Council appointed a handyman to deal with routine maintenance and clearing works necessary in the village. He is employed on a part-time basis working 17.5 hours per week for the Council. (n) Proposed Exclusion Zone Nettleham Infant School This project has been reviewed by the County Council. They have consulted again with regard to the provision of a safety zone outside the Infant School which, following recommendations from the Parish Council to restrict the no parking hours to school start and school finish times (rather than for the whole day), has received the support of the Council. It is hoped the scheme can be implemented before the end of the school summer term. (o) Parish Plan Committee The Parish Council supported the resolution to convene and constitute a Parish Plan Committee with a view to examining services and wishes of the residents of what they would like to see by way of facilities and other services in the village over a period of 5 years.

The Parish Council are extremely grateful to members of Threshold, who distributed leaflets to every household in the village inviting residents to a community meeting which attracted approximately 120 residents and provided a most instructive and useful evening, which was chaired by Cllr John Evans, who is Chairman of the Parish Plan Committee.

There is now an enthusiastic Committee in place to measure and look at all the information and data which is coming forward from residents and in that regard a detailed questionnaire will shortly be available to all households in the village for completion.

These questionnaires will be subsequently analysed and used in conjunction with the production of the Plan.

The project is supported by the Community Council for Lincoln, which acts as consultant to the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for promoting the suggestion that all villages should produce such a plan.

The Parish Council has received a grant of £3,000 to enable this exercise to be undertaken and completed. (p) Village Awards and Best Kept Village Competitions Calor Limited This is a national competition which Nettleham entered for the first time during the year. The village won the county section of the competition for its use of technology and went forward to the final competition, in respect of which a reception was held in London to present prizes.

Unfortunately, the Parish Council did not succeed in being placed in the competition, but will be renewing their efforts in the forthcoming months.

Best Kept Village Competition Lincolnshire Unfortunately, for this current year, Nettleham was not placed. In view of all the work being carried out in the village, co-operation of residents and business persons, it is hoped that this year successes will be gained. (q) Parking in the Village The Parish Council have considered problems with regard to parking on verges and footpaths in the village, which is difficult, to say the least, to control. They have, however, identified two sites, one being on High Street and the other on Washdyke Lane, where it is hoped to produce some preventative measures on a trial basis. (r) Finance The year 2005/6, the Council precepted the sum of £67,970 from West Lindsey District Council and details of accounts and income and expenditure will be published in Nettleham News and are therefore not included in my report.

The Parish Council received a certificate of satisfaction from its external auditors with regard to the accounts for the 2005/6 year.

(s) PIanning The Planning Committee considered each and every planning application, which was submitted affecting property in the parish, and this totalled 29 in all, of which 4 were refused by the District Council. One appeal decision was allowed in respect of a property in the village by the Secretary of State after first having been refused by the District Council and there is one further appeal pending at the present time for which a decision has not yet been made. (t) The Old School Hiring of The Old School for meeting of voluntary organisations and for private functions has increased and there is now only a limited availability. Following the refurbishment, provision can now be made for some functions to take place in the Sports Pavilion as an alternative if required. (u) Local Plan Review The decision of the Local Plan Review has now been published and only minor modifications are taking place.

This essentially prohibits the development of further houses in Nettleham, the village having been regarded as “fully developed in that context”. The Police field was of a concern to many residents, knowing that the Police Committee had hoped to have it earmarked for residential purposes. Such proposal was rejected by the Inspector and the land therefore remains an open area.

The Parish Council are looking into possible use of this area of land for recreation and sporting facilities should it become available.

Conclusion As well as my first report, this will be my last. We have elections in May 2006 and I shall not be standing for the Council again.

I would like to thank all my fellow Councillors for their help and support, not only during my year as Chairman, but also during my time on the Council. I would also like to thank David Dubut for the hard work he does as Parish Council Clerk.

I am extremely proud to have been a resident in Nettleham for 40 years. It is a special place and will, I am sure, continue to be so in the future.

HALIFAX CLOSURE In response to a recent letter from the Editor requesting the reasons behind the closure of the Halifax agency in Nettleham, the following reply was received: Nettleham Closure Thank you for the letter regarding your disappointment with the closure in Nettleham.

First of all, may I offer you my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused to both yourself and the community.

Unfortunately, it was the agent’s decision to close the agency and we had to accept his resignation, although with some regret. It certainly was not made lightly and we did all we could to try and maintain an agency in the area.

We are always open to the possibilities of a transfer and any new openings in the area, but we can’t guarantee this will happen in the future. At all times we must ensure the suitability of either the new agent, or the new premises, so we can guarantee a good service for our customers.

We do still have a strong presence in the area with a choice of outlets just over three miles away from your own postcode, which I have included below. I do hope you find these alternative arrangements convenient and that you might continue to do business with us, as I’m sure they can offer you an excellent service.

And the correspondence received from John Carr Financial Services: The following are details of events leading to the closure of the Halifax Agency in Nettleham.

May 2005 Advised Halifax that we were to sell Navenby business and Halifax agency as going concern and that the lease on the Nettleham agency was due to expire in 12 months.

July 2005 Advised Halifax that we were in the process of purchasing a new building in Nettleham (20 The Green) and that we intended moving the Halifax agency there. Advised by Halifax that this was acceptable.

October 2005 Advised at a meeting with the Halifax that John Carr had retired, that we had completed the purchase of 20 The Green and that we intended to move the agency and asked for confirmation that there would be no cost for the move.

Halifax advised that the move was acceptable and that they would move the agency free of charge.

February 2006 Halifax annual audit, passed 100% and Halifax confirmed that they would move the agency free of charge, but expressed concern with the current sales of the agency.

2 March 2006 Emergency meeting called by Halifax to advise that they would now no longer move the agency free of charge and that the charge would have to be paid by ourselves, this being estimated at anything from £12,000 - £30,000, dependant on what existing equipment could be used.

Also advised that the reason for the U-turn was that we had not been hitting targets and that there was an agency in Welton. We asked if we could at some point recoup the monies to set up the new agency and were advised that this was not possible. We also asked if we could have a guarantee that if we did pay to move the agency, that they would not shut the agency.

We were advised that no such guarantee could be made and that if we did not hit targets, that they would close the agency.

3 March 2006 Advised Halifax that we would not be moving the agency, as they had made it uneconomical to do so. Advised staff and customers of the situation. Contacted Nationwide Building Society, to see if they would be interested in an agency.

6 April 2006 Meeting with Nationwide representative - very interested in agency, put forward idea to the Nationwide board, but can take up to a month to receive an answer.

Readers Letters DEMISE OF THE WILD LIFE OF NETTLEHAM I have been a resident of Nettleham for over 30 years and, since retirement, I enjoy taking a book of birds/plant life and a pair of binoculars and setting off around the fields of Nettleham.

The last 3 years I have seen a Kingfisher between Scothern and Nettleham, nesting near the Beck; two Kestrels, which frequent the fields between these two villages; Barn Owls which visit at dusk and two Sparrow Hawks which swoop in and out of the hedgerows, making a lovely sight to behold; Collared Doves nestling against each other before moving at the sound of noise and the sound of the Song Thrush and the Skylark - all of which make life worth living.

Now I have seen nothing. The birds I have mentioned have gone from these fields, leaving only the Seagulls from the sewage works and Blackbirds.

I was puzzled, until last month I found one of the Sparrow Hawks in a tree branch near the Beck. It had been shot with a .22 the bullet going right through the chest.

We now appear to have the Rambo community, with their camouflage jackets and bravado ammo pouches, with guns slung over their shoulders. They say they are shooting Wood Pigeons - well they have succeeded, because I have only seen one of late.

I see the lampers at night in their vehicles moving around the fields wielding their high powered lamps and driving close to the community housing. I have seen a flap of wings across their beam and a shot rings out, muffled by a silencer. Was it a Barn Owl...who can tell?

I telephone the police and the civilian operators come back with their ready prepared card saying “There is nothing we can do about that”, or, on the reverse... ”It has nothing to do with us”.

I don’t think anyone cares, if they did we wouldn’t kill everything in sight for the sake of sport would we???

I don’t think we will recover from this absence of wild life - not now, not ever.

Our new community would say it’s what we call living in the 21st century - get used to it.

I don’t think any Lincolnshire native will get used to it - especially from my own generation.

RACE FOR LIFE: 14 MAY 2006

Nettleham Youth

Race day had arrived and after three weeks of getting sponsors, we were ready. There was no stopping us now - training shoes were broken in - we were fighting fit and ready to go 5km around Lincolnshire Showground to raise money for Cancer Research Ltd and it was freezing!

The winter pansies planted in the troughs at the side of the road near the church looked beautiful and I was very saddened to see them uprooted and thrown into the Beck.

4,000 runners lined up, all taking part in an event so personal, so emotionally charged, all joining together for something that had brought us together. There were some moving messages and tributes that motivated and moved you - it was very special.

There were a lot of Nettleham ladies there (“Co-op Bunnies” - you really have to speak with the management about a new uniform!!). Well done ladies.

Between us we raised over £500 which was fantastic. Thank you everyone for sponsoring us.

A JOB WELL DONE Towards the end of January, the workmen moved in on Mill Hill. The job was no small operation and lasted over nine days.

Living a few doors away, I was interested in the goings on, and took some photographs of the work in progress, which, it turned out, was to replace the crumbling concrete approach from the footpath to the front gate of the property.

One of the workmen told me that it would have cost the householder about £2,000 to get the job done and I must say that they have worked well and the result looks really good.

I later spoke to the owner of the property, who said that the approach was so bad (danger of tripping, etc) that he was considering getting the job done himself, had it not been done for him.

Seemingly, before he lived there, there may have been a ditch across the front, and he had come across the roots of two trees in the vicinity.

Well done the Council.

Also the same had happened to the large planters by the side of the Co-op. People who can do this must be bored out of their mind and have the intelligence of a zombie.

I’m assuming, perhaps wrongly, that this act was a youthful prank and that they had little else to do but destroy a thing of beauty.

Which brings me to my main point in writing. As far as I am aware, there is very little for our young people of Nettleham to do. When they get into their teens they have grown out of the playground at Bill Bailey’s. What I feel is needed there is a specifically built skateboarding area where they can use up their energy, have a bit of fun and develop a skill. There is plenty of room in the field for a construction like this and it appears to be a popular sport with most youngsters.

I realise we have football facilities and tennis in the summer, but this obviously is not enough; there is clearly a need here for those others who, for one reason or another, do not want to play football or tennis. If we would like our children to keep out of trouble, we have to occupy them. Has anyone asked them what they would enjoy?

My suggestion only arises because I see so many children on skateboards.

I’m afraid we do hear grumbles from us oldies about a small proportion of the youth of today - and I’m sure it’s because we are not providing them with the type of amusement/occupation that could be rewarding and fulfilling. Surely I’m not alone on this subject, there must be plenty of other ideas.

Onto business!! Throughout this year there have been many changes within Lincolnshire police, with the restructuring of resources throughout the Division. The aim of this restructuring is to provide a better quality of service for the communities we look after, and to work more closely with other agencies to resolve issues that may arise.

One of the ways in which this is being done is to take from Community Officers some of the responsibilities they had, and also to reduce the number of occasions where they are used in other areas. This will allow the Community Officer to concentrate more on the areas they cover, and help in the delivery of a service that you deserve.

Within the restructure there was the creation of Community Beat Teams. The teams consist of a Community Beat Manager and a number of PCSO’s and Special Constables. The aim of the team will be to provide high visibility patrols, target problem areas more effectively, forge closer links with other agencies, and be more available to local residents. The effect of this will hopefully see a reduction in crime, and the fear of crime, and will allow you all to sleep a little more soundly at night.

This year also saw a change in the Law. Previously there were a number of minor offences, which we were unable to arrest people for. These were low-level crimes which were more of a nuisance factor than anything else, but as of earlier this year, the Government gave us a power of arrest for all crimes regardless of how minor or major they are. Certain conditions will need to be met, but it should make it easier for us to deal with those minor persistent crimes that keep re-occurring if warnings and advice are having little impact.

In relation to anti-social behaviour we are making regular visits to the areas that have been identified as suffering the most. The ASB is not on the scale that it is in Lincoln, but for a small community it can have a big effect and we are looking at ways in which to reduce it.

One of those ways is to actually speak to the youths to find out why they do what they do.

The most common answer is that they are bored due to the lack of facilities within the village, and the lack of places for them to go.

We have spoken to a number of local youths already, but we’re keen to hear from as many of our younger residents as we can, so we can build up a picture of what their needs might be, and how we can help them.

If you are between the ages of 13 and 17 and regularly wander round the village, or stay in all the time because there’s nothing to do, please contact me and let me know what you would like to see in the village, or what facilities or clubs you think the village needs to give you something to do in the evenings.

Would you also be prepared to join in with one-off schemes that would benefit the community as a whole? When we get a clearer picture of what you would like and the resources 15

available, then maybe we can do something to help you, but we need your input first. So, contact me on any of the numbers at the top of this page and let me know what you think.

Bad parking is a subject that I’ve written about more times than I care to remember! To mention it is like opening a can of worms, because it is such an emotive topic and everyone seems to have an opinion on what constitutes illegal parking, and what doesn’t.

I find it necessary to mention it again, not because of any major parking problems that have suddenly arisen, but more of a reminder about where we all stand. By far the biggest complaint is about people parking on the footpath. Many people, with the best of intentions, try to park half on the kerb and half on the road in a manner that causes least obstruction to other road users, but, in doing so, end up causing problems for pedestrians.

Common sense should tell you that if you park a car with some of it on the pavement, and the gap you leave is too small for a pushchair, wheelchair or a disabled vehicle to get past, then you’re parking illegally and you should move immediately. I have even seen people park their cars completely on the footpath! Now how daft is that!

Just a small reminder that cars shouldn’t be parked on footpaths, no matter how wide the footpath is and how much room people have to get by. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is visually impaired, would they expect to come across a parked car as they walk along a footpath? No, of course not. I almost feel like a teacher telling you all off, but you need to start putting safety ahead of convenience and start parking sensibly. It wouldn’t harm most people to have to walk a little bit further than planned, if it meant the community becoming a safer place.

As I mentioned earlier the Community Beat Teams will consist of Special Constables and we need more people to join up and help us to make our communities safer. If you’ve ever thought about it before but not taken the next step, why not contact Human Resources at Lincolnshire Police HQ for more information. If there’s a particular area you’d prefer to work in then they will try to accommodate you where possible. Give it a try, you might just like it!

You may have watched Bill Oddie looking for wildlife in unlikely places, well now’s the chance for you to do the same on land managed by our Parish Council. So if you see wildlife and you don't know its name then simply add dragonfly, owl, butterfly, bird of prey, etc, to your list.

I spotted this fish in the Beck on Good Friday and thought you may be interested in the photographs. I have never seen a big fish like this in the village Beck before, although I do recall some years ago that a pike visited us.

Mark Lawrence Editor: This fish is indeed another pike, clearly identifiable by its dorsal fin set well back near the tail and would probably have somehow escaped from Riseholme Lake.

It is in very poor condition, with a considerable amount of white fungal growth on its body.

It is unlikely that it would survive very long in this condition

Natural Recycling

This photograph of two young blackbirds was sent in by Awen Lobbett, who really enjoys watching the many birds which visit her garden throughout the year. The picture was actually taken last July, the day before the young birds flew the nest.

Interestingly, the nest had been constructed against a wall in a climbing hydrangea the previous year (2004) by a pair of chaffinches and then repaired and re-used by the blackbirds. This year, it has not been used, but Awen has noticed several birds taking the old nesting material away for use elsewhere a good example of natural recycling!

Editor Some years ago, in my own garden I came across a nest which contained both blackbird and song thrush eggs - apparently a case of nest-sharing. Unfortunately the nest and eggs were destroyed during a spell of bad weather, so I was unable to observe the outcome of this unusual situation.

One final thought, it would also be of interest to know what wildlife used to live in the village.

For example the Beck seems to be devoid of plant life, has it always been so? Can any of the older residents remember the village ever having Red Squirrels?

About 30 people a year die as a direct result of faulty gas appliances. The symptoms - such as headaches, drowsiness, poor co-ordination and nausea can all too easily be mistaken for flu or viral infections.

Are you a patient from the Nettleham & Cherry Willingham Practice and live in Nettleham, Reepham, Fiskerton, Scothern or Sudbrooke?

Defective equipment, poor installation and irregular maintenance of domestic appliances and lack of ventilation are the main causes of carbon monoxide poisoning.

It is essential if symptoms are experienced that usage of the appliance is ceased until it has been checked by a CORGI Registered Installer.

An annual service and regular checks on equipment should take place and to supplement these, carbon monoxide detectors can be used to help safeguard against this silent killer.

We are looking to recruit people who are interested in Primary Health Care and what is happening in their local surgeries.

We are a Patient Group which meets each month to discuss issues such as Primary Trust Developments, Quality of Health Care, Surgery Systems and Medicines Management.

We also help the practice with fundraising and have recently contributed to the new automated patient check-in system at Nettleham Surgery.

NETTLEHAM HANDBELL RINGERS Nettleham Handbell Ringers was formed in September 1992.

Andrew Hensman has been Musical Director for around ten years.

The group gives concerts in aid of charities, and plays at church services including weddings. They also sometimes join in mass ringings, and great fun is had by all.

They meet fortnightly, on the second and fourth Mondays in the month, at 7.00pm until around 9.00pm in All Saints Church, Nettleham.

We would like to start a beginners handbell ringing team, starting from 11th September. No experience required - just come along and have a go for a few weeks. We are sure you will find great enjoyment, but you never know until you have tried!

FREE BUS TRAVEL AT POINT OF BOARDING Free Concessionary Bus Travel is on the way for the majority of the Lincolnshire area thanks to a partnership of local authorities.

The scheme, which is far wider than that which the Government requires local authorities to provide, is available thanks to a partnership involving West Lindsey District Council, East Lindsey District Council, Boston Borough Council, North Kesteven District Council, South Holland District Council, and the City of Lincoln Council.

From 1 April 2006, totally free concessionary bus travel will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the administrative area of Lincolnshire County Council, for concessionary pass holders.

Also, uninterrupted bus journeys to Doncaster, Grimsby, Kings Lynn, Newark, Peterborough, Retford, Scunthorpe and Wisbech will still be included as part of this excellent service.

Those using the scheme previously had to pay 50% of the cost, but now it is TOTALLY FREE. Current bus pass holders don’t have to do anything, as the bus operators have agreed to allow passengers to continue with their current passes until they expire.

Each of the five Councils involved in the scheme will issue their own bus passes, bearing the logo of the issuing Authority and the wording ‘Lincolnshire Bus Pass’.

ELIGIBILITY ● Those eligible for the service include anyone aged 60 and over, who is a permanent resident in the district. ● People suffering from a permanent disability, which has a substantial effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. There is no age limit for people qualifying under this rule.

ALTERNATIVES Eligible residents of West Lindsey will still be able to choose an alternative concession if they so wish - a free Senior Railcard or £18 of taxi tokens.

It’s been a very busy time for the Nettleham First Responders, attending almost 30 call-outs so far this year.

The call-outs have been to a wide range of symptoms, including patients suffering from breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, fits, strokes, chest pains and heart attacks.

The Lincolnshire Ambulance service has recently introduced a new Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD). This state-of-the-art system uses satellite positioning technology to get ambulances to incidents even quicker. The benefits that this system brings to Nettleham is that our group are informed of any emergencies immediately by a text message, this should result in faster response times to any call-outs we receive.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among adults throughout the country.

Most victims of sudden cardiac arrest are middle-aged or elderly and although the average victim is in their 60’s, some victims are in there 30’s or 40’s. For many, there is no previous history of heart problems. Cardiac arrest is often the first symptom, without warning and completely unpredictable. The chances are that you will know someone who has experienced such an arrest - a relative, friend, neighbour or a work colleague.

Sudden cardiac arrest does not have to result in ‘sudden death’.

When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, most victims have an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation.

When the heart is in this state, it cannot beat in a normal regulated fashion and blood does not circulate to the heart and the brain. Firstly, the pulse stops, the victim then loses consciousness and collapses, the breathing stops and the victim appears lifeless.

If the heart can be shocked quickly with a defibrillator, a normal heart rhythm may be restored.

Ventricular fibrillation is a treatable rhythm. Electrical energy is present in the heart, but is out of control. If the heart can be shocked quickly with a defibrillator, a normal heart rhythm may be restored. This process is called defibrillation. If the shock is delivered within the first few minutes, many victims will survive.

We Need Your Help We try to run the scheme 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and any ‘off line’ time being extremely minimal. To help us maintain this level of coverage we are currently trying to recruit some new responders for the village.

What is a First Responder?

A First Responder is a communitybased volunteer who is trained to respond to any life-threatening 21

medical emergency (chest pains, breathing difficulties and unconscious persons) in Nettleham and give early basic life support and defibrillation, if required, prior to the ambulance paramedics’ arrival.

Do you have some spare time?

If you have some spare time and would like to help the residents of Nettleham in this way, why not telephone us for further information.

You will receive full training at the LIVES Head Office in Horncastle and then be part of this valuable scheme.

If you feel it’s not for you, but would like to help in some other way, why not join us as a helper, or a fundraiser.

It costs around £1,600 per year to keep a scheme like ours up and running, so please spare us some of your time. Think about becoming a Nettleham First Responder today...

Oh, What a Strine!

Just recently I’ve come across A book called “Let Stalk Strine”; The idea is to give us Poms An Aussie-speak outline!

Sometimes they seem to run their words Into each other, and We’re at a loss! What can they mean When they say “Uppendan”?

To get the meaning, what works well Is to say it quickly; sound As if you’re in a hurry, then it’s Clearly “up and down”!

That can’t be all, there must be more Down Under, I suppose; “Aorta” take a closer look, So, “Laze an Gem” - here goes!

They’ll say they’ve got a “Gloria Soame”, Not just an “Air Fridge” place; That “Marmon Dead” had a “Terror Souse” With not a lot of space.

It’s “Emma Chisit” every time When shopping - no more pence; Now “Dismal Guernsey” is the way All pay in “Dolls and Sense”!

A breakfast dish of “Baked Necks” is A tasty recipe; “Hop Eyes” for lunch, and then the best A “Panam Inn Smeat” for tea!

I’m “Gona” have a “Laidan” then, Perhaps go “Sander’s Lape”; “Utter Martyr Semmitch” after that Would really be a treat...

SWIFT BY NAME AND SWIFT BY NATURE All three species can be seen flying over the village in summer, hoovering up myriad small insects. You will never see swifts perching on wires, though. Other than when nesting, swifts spend all their lives in the air, including sleeping. It’s reckoned they fly well over 100,000 miles every year, with only a small proportion of this coming from their journeys to and from southern Africa, where they live during our winter.

The swift keeps its head level even when in a tight turn.

Every summer Nettleham is fortunate to have some amazing visitors lodging unobtrusively in our homes.

I didn’t even notice our own lodgers for a couple of years, then one day, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a bird apparently flying straight through our roof tiles. Now I realise that many of the houses in Nettleham which have old pantile roofs provide summer homes for these amazing birds. There are at least three colonies of swifts in Nettleham, each usually spread over several adjacent buildings and containing perhaps ten breeding pairs.

Swifts are superficially similar to house martins and swallows, with sweptback wings and forked tails, but the swifts look dark all over and when gliding their wings are sickle-shaped seen from below.

Even their nest material is gathered from the air - fortunately they can make do with just a few bits of straw or feather. Swifts are at their most noticeable when indulging in ‘screaming parties’ when several birds fly round and round in circles at great speed, calling as they go.

There is a snag with flying fast, of course, which is slowing down enough to land!

If you’ve ever seen a swift fly into a roof, you’ll know that to the naked eye it hardly seems to slow down. However, the camera shows that they turn their bodies nearly vertical and spread their wings and tail for maximum air resistance, before crashing down into one of the grooves between the tiles and using their feet to bring them to a standstill.

It’s reckoned that swifts can reach over 100mph in a dive. It sometimes seems inevitable that two birds will collide as they fly fast and low over roofs and round corners, but I’ve yet to see it happen. One thing they do which must help them stay orientated is to keep their heads level even

The photograph above shows a young bird (distinguishable by the pale edges to the feathers) I rescued last July, just before its release. Despite being superb fliers, swifts have difficulty taking off (they can just about manage it from a flat surface, but not from long grass, for instance).

They generally nest quite high up, so that when leaving the nest they can drop several feet while gaining flying speed.

But unlike most young birds, fledgling swifts are competent fliers straight away.

Last July, I was lucky enough to spot some young swifts leaving their nests for the first time. The last one sat under a tile looking out for a couple of hours, but when it decided it was time to go, it took to the air in the manner born.

Even so, the birds quite often need several attempts before landing successfully. The scientific name for the swift (Apus apus) actually means without feet, but the photograph above shows they have quite substantial feet with sharp claws.

Although the birds are thriving, there is a possible long-term threat to their population here. Modern roofs, including those with pantiles, are often too perfect to provide the nest spaces offered by the irregularity of the old hand-made tiles.

quickly, they don’t visit the nest very often.

It’s not surprising then that you can remain unaware of their presence in your roof.

In my experience, too, they nest between the roofing felt and the tiles, so there is nothing to be seen inside your attic.

Something else you can see in this photograph are the prominent cheeks of the bird. That’s because they are bulging with insects caught to feed the young. It takes the parent birds at least 45 minutes to collect this much food, much longer if the weather is poor. So as well as arriving at their nests very fast and disappearing

If it wasn’t for man’s activities, there probably wouldn’t be any swifts around Nettleham, as their natural nest sites are cracks in rock faces and caves - not common features in Lincolnshire!

These displays are probably something to do with the birds claiming their home territory, as they fly round the buildings in which the nests of the colony are situated.

But hearing their thrilling cries and watching their mastery of flight, it is difficult not to believe they are enjoying it immensely. Often they seem to be trying to prove which of them is the fastest flier round two or three laps of the course.

It won’t be landing again for 2 or 3 years, when, all being well, it will return to a Nettleham roof and become a parent itself.

So if your roof is being remade, please avoid blocking up any cracks and crannies the swifts use. And if you’d like swifts to nest with you, they do take well to suitable nest boxes, which can even be special hollow concrete blocks built into a wall.

Gaining flying speed by flying down the roof.

In the photograph at the base of the opposite page, the bird is coming back out of the crack in the tiles with its cheeks back to their normal more elegant shape.

Occasionally however, a bird does get into the house. Maybe it was looking for a nest site, and found that it couldn’t get out the way it got in, or perhaps a young bird that mistook the way out of the nest.

If this happens to you, don’t worry. The bird needs your help because it can’t usually take off from the ground. It can easily be caught by covering it with something like a towel, because it will be calmer in the dark, and then very gently feeling underneath and getting it into your hand. It won’t claw or bite, and will sit quite calmly in the hand.

CHANGES AT NETTLEHAM SURGERY WHY WAIT IN A QUEUE ?

We are pleased to inform you we have now installed a new automated electronic patient checking-in system at Nettleham.

You can now check yourself in for appointments. This is ideal if you are in a hurry to get to work, or taking the children to school. You can use our touch-screen located to the right of the main reception entrance.

All you have to do is answer a few questions on screen and you are booked in!

TELEPHONE SYSTEM The new digital telephone system has now been installed and is operational.

This system will give you access to our emergency line, appointments/general enquiries and prescriptions. We have increased our incoming lines on 751717 from three to five, and the system allows another two people to queue as well.

Other advantages of this system will be voice mail. The new system should give easier access to the surgery.

Please bear with us, as we have had a few teething problems with this, which should soon settle down.

TELEPHONE CONSULTATIONS We are always trying to improve services for you. In order that we can help as quickly as possible we are introducing: “Do you really need to see the doctor or could you speak to him/her over the telephone?”

From Monday 15 May, we are offering the option of discussing your problem with the doctor over the telephone as an alternative to visiting the surgery.

This could save you an unnecessary journey to the surgery. All the doctors will have telephone consultation slots available during the days they are working.

A reminder that the surgery at Nettleham will be closed for Target Training (a county wide initiative) from 1.00 pm onwards on 20 June 2006. This also applies to our dispensary. During this closure, in an emergency please telephone 01427 677077.

Nettleham Parish Plan A foreword by Parish Councillor John Evans, Chairman of the Parish Plan Steering Committee Dear Resident,

There will be collection points for completed questionnaires at key points around the village including, The Parish Office in the Old School, the Library, The Co-op, Troika, Beckside Newsagents and Nettleham Convenience Store.

About 6 months ago, it was decided to produce a Parish Plan for Nettleham.

The Parish Plan concept is the result of a government initiative to try to bring decision-making closer to the community. The Parish plan sets out to understand the current needs of the residents of Nettleham and how they will develop over a 10 year period.

We recognise that there is a lot of work that we are asking you to do, but it will be worthwhile if it helps to identify what’s wanted to create a better future for the residents of Nettleham.

This will enable the Parish Council and West Lindsey to more accurately take into account local needs and desires when planning any changes and where to target expenditure.

We do, however, have to be realistic in our plans, as there isn’t a limitless pot of cash at our disposal, but if we have a good plan to work from, based on this consultation, then we have a better chance of being successful in winning the various grants available.

I was appointed as the Chairman of the Steering Committee in October of 2005 and since then we have expanded the original committee of volunteers from 7 to 14 people - all interested in helping to improve life for the residents of Nettleham.

The first stage of the process is to discover what residents think about the current situation in the village and what they think they would like to see changed in the future. We have already had one public meeting and now, as a result of the comments made at that meeting and consultations by our committee members, we have produced a comprehensive questionnaire, to which every household in Nettleham can make inputs to enable us to formulate a plan for the future.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE?

As outlined on page 7 of the previous edition of this magazine, the questionnaire is a key stage in the formulation of our Parish Plan for the next ten years.

The overall findings of the questionnaire will be discussed in greater detail by a number of Section Groups dedicated to each of the nine sections of the questionnaire and the final results will be used to determine our Parish Plan. This will then form the basis for the next stage an Action Plan.

It is vitally important that as many residents as possible complete this questionnaire, so that it is truly representative of the residents of Nettleham today.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO COMPLETE? It’s a fast-moving world - we’re all very busy and making time can sometimes be difficult - but you will find that the questionnaire only takes around 45 minutes - many of the questions will not be personally relevant to you.

DO I HAVE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS? No. You only answer the questions which are relevant to your household - many of the questions will not apply and you can simply leave them blank and move on.

There may be a number of questions which, for your own reasons, you don’t wish to answer and again, these can be left blank. However, the more questions you are able to answer, the more accurately the response can be measured.

HOW ARE THE QUESTIONS ARRANGED? The questionnaire is divided into 9 topics, which resulted from the Public Meeting on Wednesday 11 January 2006.

FUNDRAISING FOR SIGHT SAVERS A most sincere thank you to all who supported the Coffee Morning in aid of Sight Savers held in the Village Hall on 27th March which, together with donations, raised £168.55.

Thank you all so much, not only for joining us at the event, but also for bringing cakes, providing raffle prizes and indeed making it a lovely morning of fun and fellowship.

We did appreciate your support.

Glynis kindly allowed the sale of Easter chicks and bunnies at the salon, and these raised a further £27.20. So thank you very much Glynis, your staff and customers.

Once again, Win Rollin sold Easter chicks and bunnies to friends and her efforts realised a further £39.70. Thank you so much Win. Further donations were received and the total we have been able to send to Sight Savers this year was £245.00. This really is fantastic and will help save the sight of so many folk. We cannot imagine how much we will change their lives. Thank you all for your generosity.

FUNDRAISING FOR LINK ROMANIA Thank you all for your support of the Coffee Morning held at Church View on 7th April, which raised the magnificent sum of £245.00.

Further generous donations after the event took this amount to £252.50. Wonderful, thank you and, of course, a big thank you to Doreen, the Scheme Manager, for allowing us the use of the lounge and kitchen once again.

Now that the better weather has arrived in Iasi, work can start again on the Skills Centre. They hope that the tiles will soon be fixed to the roof and then work can start on the interior.

There is so much to be done this year in order to keep the children warm and cosy during next winter.

Nettleham Gardeners Association Annual Show The Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Annual Show will take place as usual in the Village Hall on Saturday 9 September 2006.

There are lots of different categories in which to enter and you don’t even need to be a member of the Association, so why not have a go yourself this year and you could win one of the many cash prizes, or even walk away with one of the splendid trophies!

The Show opens to the general public at 2.30pm when the judging has taken place and admission is 50p per person at the door.

If you wish to take your exhibits home with you, they must be removed from the show benches promptly at 4.30pm. If, however, you do not wish to take your exhibits home, then all the items and produce left on the benches will be auctioned at 5.00pm, all proceeds going to the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association funds.

This is an opportunity to pick up some real bargains - bunches of beautiful fresh flowers, lovely vegetables at the peak of condition, mouth-watering home-made cakes and pastries, tasty jars of home-made jams and pickles and perhaps a bottle of delicious home-made wine to wash it all down!

Coffee, tea and biscuits are available throughout the afternoon and you can enjoy having a cuppa with your friends in the comfort of the Village Hall lounge, whilst you are waiting for the trophy presentations to take place and the bidding to begin.

During the course of the afternoon, raffle tickets will also be available and the draw for the prizes will take place, just before the auction begins, at around 4.30pm.

It’s an altogether enjoyable afternoon out for all the family - there is lots of excitement as children rush in and to see if they have won any prizes for their entries, and mums, dads and grandparents can be equally proud if some of their home-grown or home-made produce has been awarded a prize.

Please don’t worry about your exhibit not being up to show standard - this isn’t the Chelsea Flower Show! - the more the merrier and this year we would really love to see the show benches groaning under the weight of all the exhibits! There are so many classes, there must be one which matches your special talents - so have a go and help to keep this traditional village event alive and well!

Windows are the eyes of a room and the curtains a focal point, so never underestimate their impact. A window treatment that harmonises with its surroundings will always be the most successful; when deciding how to curtain a window, choose a style that - in addition to flattering the shape of the window -

Mood is sometimes more important than a particular style and curtains can help to create it. In a bedroom, a romantic atmosphere might be conjured by dressing the bed and windows with generous swathes of gauze. The volume of fine, floating fabric will flatter the room like a soft-focus lens. In a dining room, theatrical decoration can lend a sense of drama to every dinner party.

The way you curtain a window will be determined, to an extent, by its shape and by the character of the room. Small rooms will be overwhelmed by a grand, formal window treatment and a large room needs

something more than a pair of straight hanging curtains to give it a focus. The fabric design, too, should be in keeping with its surroundings. Stripes and plain colours are always a safe choice, but ensure that the patterns are in scale with the size of the windows.

Curtains can be a useful tool if you want to improve the proportions of a room visually.

Too many patterns or colours will have an enclosing effect in a small room, so use curtains made from fabric in the same pattern or colour as the walls to give continuity and a feeling of spaciousness.

Light, bright rooms always seem larger and airier than they really are, so explore the possibility of curtaining with filmy sheer fabrics. If you need privacy, or prefer a solid window covering by night, fit a blind behind the curtains.

Mind and body holistic healthcare

In rooms where the ceiling seems too low, ceiling-to-floor curtains will carry the eye upwards, giving an impression of height.

This technique does not work in reverse however - short curtains in a lofty room simply look penny-pinching but wide, full curtains will draw attention away from the ceiling.

It proved to be an interesting and musical evening with a visit by Norma Kimmerling Millar, to talk about her life as an Opera Singer. She had tales of her time with the Welsh National Opera and the D’Oyle Carte, before leading the members in a rousing sing-song of old favourites.

The Annual General Meeting firstly undertook the business of thanking retiring committee members and electing the President for the coming year. Vivien Millard had done a splendid job in the previous year and graciously accepted the members’ nomination to continue the task.

A buffet supper was then enjoyed by all present.

With (amongst other activities) eleven beds in the hospice in Lincoln and five day centres throughout the county to support, fundraising is an essential and ongoing effort year by year, and 2006 is proving to be no exception.

Linelands is a care home owned by Lincolnshire County Council Community Services for Adult Social Care.

Naturally, no money would ever be raised without the continued and very generous support of loyal people - just like you !

Hundreds and hundreds of contributors, large and small, all add up to provide the vital funds which enables support and care to be available to entire families at their time of greatest need.

It is a purpose-built, two-storey property surrounded by gardens with sitting areas and within easy reach of local amenities.

The home is split into six wings, each having its own lounge, bedrooms, toilets and bathroom.

In addition, there are kitchen areas where service users and their relatives are able to make drinks. There is a dining area on the ground floor and two dining areas on the first floor. A passenger lift enables service users access to the first floor.

Accommodation is provided in single bedrooms, each with wash-hand basin.

Each bedroom and communal area has a call-bell system.

Linelands provides Short Term Care accommodation in nine rooms on the ground floor and Intermediate Care accommodation in fifteen rooms on the first floor. A Day Care Unit on the ground floor provides support to people with physical and dementia care needs during the week.

Linelands aim is to provide services which support and develop the potential of older people, working jointly with health colleagues and other agencies to maximise resources and achieve an integrated service.

Staff receive regular training on how to rehabilitate and motivate people. Each staff member has a training plan and many have achieved, or are working towards, an NVQ qualification.

Linelands has links with the local community in its provision of services and in social events which are held throughout the year.

Beckside Pre-School Playgroup What a busy 10 months we have had! Following a very successful Ofsted inspection, under the new ownership of Debbie Pryke and Jane Jokic, Beckside is going from strength to strength. Our colleague Elaine Blake left Beckside after nearly 18 years working with pre-school children. Her contribution to the children and her colleagues will always be remembered and we wish Elaine every happiness and much love.

Our calendar was very full from the start of the September term, and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Christmas soon came and we had a lovely Nativity and sing-a-long with parents and grandparents. We were delighted to take the children to Linelands, and put on our “Little Show” for the residents, which was very well received and we were made most welcome.

We started the new year celebrating the “Chinese New Year” with lots of activities in which the children could get involved. The children had an enjoyable afternoon on the “Children’s Library Van” when it visited the school. Another exciting time for the children was to see “Jack and the Beanstalk” - a play staged at the Infant School by a group of professional actors, who later came into Beckside to chat with the children. We have a strong link with the Infant School and are able to enjoy the use of the school hall and playground facilities, which is beneficial to the children, especially those due to start “big” school.

Pancake Day was great fun, as we had a chef (one of our daddies) help the children make pancakes, and best of all eating them with different toppings - a yummy time was had by both children and staff!

Our theme in March is “Healthy Eating” and the children have planted potatoes and onions in our garden, and when the summer arrives, with a bit of luck, we’ll have tomatoes and strawberries too.

We have been talking about, and making crafts out of, fruit and vegetables - most didn’t manage to get home before being eaten! We also had a trip to the Co-op where the children bought some fruit and vegetables, and then called at The Tea Cosy for some light refreshments after a busy shopping day!

Our diary is still full with Mothers Day, Easter, Teddy’s Bear Picnic, Sports Day and our summer trip.

We are open Monday - Friday (morning and afternoon sessions) and if you would like to see us at play, please contact Debbie or Jane. We would love to see you and the children will enjoy showing you around their Pre-School.

All our staff are highly committed, caring and enthusiastic and this makes Beckside a happy and stable environment for our little ones to achieve and enjoy what they are doing and make good progress towards ELGs. Debbie and Jane

Lord of the Dance comes to Nettleham Village Hall!

Irish dancing has been wowing audiences world-wide through dazzling stage shows like “Lord of the Dance” and “Riverdance” and now Nettleham has staged its own “Lord of the Dance”.

Over forty-five children, ranging from as young as five through to twelve years, put on a truly spectacular demonstration of Irish dancing at Nettleham Village Hall.

The Village Hall was packed to capacity with lots of proud parents, friends and villagers and all of them were thrilled and excited by the skill and enthusiasm of the young dancers “We could easily have sold twice as many tickets” said Colleen Roberts, the ex-professional Irish Dancer who is teaching the children, “all of the children did wonderfully well and are showing a lot of talent.”

“This was the first show for all of them many have only been practising for a few months - and they worked so hard to be ready to perform so well”. The after-school classes are run by Colleen in Nettleham, Welton and Cherry Willingham.

The next event she has planned for the children is a FEIS (that’s an Irish Dance Competition where an outside adjudicator comes and awards, medals and trophies) in June this year and there will be another Irish Dance Show, probably in the Village Hall again, sometime next year.

RB CAMERA CLUB 50TH ANNIVERSARY On 21 April RB Camera Club hosted a social evening for members and ex-members to celebrate our 50th Anniversary and we were entertained by two speakers – Peter Robinson and Jean Townsend.

Peter was able to inform us about the inception of the club and its early beginnings, a lot earlier than we had thought, in 1949.

He also showed us a scrapbook, which will be put on show at our Exhibition in the Castle during July, with newspaper cuttings and information about the club up until the 1980s.

Our President, Peter Yeo, has also been very busy compiling a book on the Club’s history and a copy of the book was available for each member at the meeting.

Afterwards we were given a talk on Epitaphs - what a boring subject we thought, until we heard Jean - epitaphs are the last laugh. Next time you go into a graveyard, make sure you look at the older grave stones/memorials you will be quite surprised at what you were allowed to put on them then (before the pc brigade got involved!). Apparently, in one graveyard, the wife and the husband are buried so that they do not have to face each other any more!

Talking of graveyards, did you know that one of the gravestones in Nettleham is featured on the web and may even make a CD cover for a pop group? An interesting piece of information imparted by our speaker Dr Guy Brown from Sheffield, who took the photograph on a visit to Nettleham last year.

The Reverend Jenny Rowley It is a great pleasure to announce that our new priest-in-charge is to be the Reverend Jenny Rowley MA, a curate in the team ministry of the parishes of SS Peter and Paul with St Michael and all Angels, Kettering, in the Diocese of Peterborough.

Mrs Rowley, who is 44, was educated at the Old Palace School, Croydon, Surrey and Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, where she gained a degree in theology in 1984. From 1985 to 2002, she was a Registered Trade Mark Attorney, working in London, Hong Kong and the Midlands. She studied on the East Anglian Ministry Training Course, gaining a Diploma in Contextual Theology, and was ordained in 2002.

Jenny is married and has two daughters. Her recreations are music (especially singing), horse riding and swimming.

Jenny will be licensed by the Bishop of Grimsby at a service in Nettleham Church on Friday 8 September at 7.30pm. She will be a member of the ministry team in the Deanery of Lawres. The Deanery Synod has planned for her to spend 25% of her time working on behalf of the deanery in youth development work.

What is Xreferplus?

Our quest to discover who our oldest reader is has generated much interest over the last couple of months. Our hearty congratulations go to Jessie Wright (pictured below) who, in her late 90’s, is our most senior borrower and who regularly visits the library.

NEWS FOR OUR YOUNGER READERS The library would like to say thank you to Nettleham Infant School and their staff. In the past three weeks, classes from Nettleham Infant School have visited the library, providing a valuable experience for the children in having another opportunity to learn how to behave in a group when visiting a public building, and they have seen how a library works.

They thoroughly enjoyed choosing and sharing books. Fifty-three adults and children have joined the library, as a result of these visits. There are a number of 61

research projects, which show that family library membership is a factor in children achieving high standards of literacy at school.

Eleven children and eight adults (a mixture of parents, grandparents and child minders) came to the launch of Story Time at Nettleham Library and we were joined by the Library Bear.

We enacted the wonderful big book version of ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury and hunted down the Library Bear who was hiding in a tent in the story corner, having tea. We sang the Teddy Bears’ Picnic and You are My Sunshine, and the sun really did shine through the library windows!

The next Story Time is at 2.00pm on Friday 23 June.

Children’s Laureate Jacqueline Wilson has just launched her campaign to encourage adults to read aloud to children, and, with this in mind, Story Times in Nettleham Library will provide a warm and welcoming venue for library professionals to bring books to life for the very young. We will be sharing songs and rhymes at our Story Times in line with the Communicate through Music programme run by the National Literacy Trust.

The Nettleham Mums and Toddlers group, which is held at the Methodist church, gave me a lovely welcome this week, where we shared a story about ducks (very apt at the moment in Nettleham).

We have a wonderful range of stories, songs and rhymes on tape for children and young people, so even if you are not comfortable with reading or singing aloud to your child, Talking Books will bring the magic of good writing into your car or bedtime routine. Older children would enjoy the Harry Potter series on tape or CD, but do try reading Ian Ogilvy’s Measle series aloud to your eight to ten year olds. Reservations are free for junior members of the library.

We have allocated the donations to the school project in Kalpitiya - this school is in an isolated area, has been neglected over the past 25 years and is in a very bad state of repair. We have been working to repair and renovate classrooms, increase the security of the site by building a boundary wall and create a new accommodation block for the teachers. At present there are only 3 toilets for 1,200 students and 29 teachers - you can imagine the queues! So we have decided to put your donations towards building a new block of toilets for the staff and students.

Building work has now started at Tangalle on the 46 houses, community centre and Montessori nursery. We are very excited that by October we should be able to house 46 families who were displaced by the tsunami.

The work to repair houses affected by the tsunami in Ambalangoda/Balipitiya has begun and we have also completed the purchase of the plot of land for the textile factory and training centre.

Loneliness, particularly amongst older people, can be a debilitating and deeply upsetting experience and may eventually lead to physical and/or mental health problems.

Through no fault of their own, some older people find themselves seemingly alone in the world and it can appear that nobody cares how they feel, or what becomes of them.

To have a reliable souce of support and friendship can make a huge difference to an older person’s welfare and well-being.

It is an unpleasant situation in which they find themselves and many older people don’t realise that there are people out there who really do care.

It is often only when their doctor, Social Services or other agencies become aware of their plight that something practical can be done to alleviate the situation.

Once an older person is identified as needing assistance, a volunteer from Eng-age is carefully matched to the person and they are able to go on to build a mutually friendly and trusting relationship. This can be of inestimable

The Lincolnshire St John Ambulance runs a project called Eng-age, which supports older people who may be either rurally or socially isolated from their community.

Its team of volunteers offer social support, which is delivered just by chatting and listening to service users.

At the moment, around eighty older people are benefitting from the scheme, but several are currently waiting and this number will increase dramatically if more volunteers cannot be recruited. Most of our referrals come from Social Services in Lincoln and Gainsborough.

We are seeking people who are caring, trustworthy and reliable and who are able to volunteer for a couple of hours a week, or even a fortnight. It really does benefit other people and the volunteers themselves also derive a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from it.

One of the most frequent comments we hear from our service users is “No one has time to talk to me” and “Everyone is always in such a rush”.

Our caring volunteers make some time to listen and this can make a huge difference.

RISEHOLME YOUNG FARMERS DONATION TO LIVES Riseholme YFC members presented Mr Dale Bunn, from LIVES, with a cheque for £150 at their recent club meeting held on the 1 March at the Riseholme Campus.

Mr Bunn explained the Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service (LIVES) is one of the largest charities in the UK, providing a First Response to road traffic accidents, cardiac arrests, and work-place emergencies, and without donations from organisations such as Riseholme Young Farmers it would be impossible to continue our work.

Georgina Pearson, Club Chairman, confirmed members had decided that they would like to give some money to charity following our successful fundraising activities over the last twelve months. We discussed in club meetings which charities we would like to benefit and it was decided that we would make donations to LIVES and the County Hospital Baby Unit.

Unlike any other village I know, Nettleham hosts 5 weekly Yoga classes (in term time).

How interesting therefore “Yoga” making the front page banner headline in The Times recently. I always think of Yoga in a positive light. I found my first experiences so interesting and effective that I underwent the extensive teacher’s training about 20 years ago.

But these headlines flagged up several pretty impressive large photographs of what I would call extreme postures and lots of writing to inform the nation: “It doesn't work”, “Yoga - the fitness myth” and “Fit for nothing”.

Some Yoga classes in this village are long established with loyal students turning up week after week. And if the classes in the village don’t suit, there are yoga classes in the surrounding villages, in town and in the various fitness clubs in and around Lincoln.

In my classes I have students from 14 to 86. Some students have been attending class for up to 30 years. Many teachers have waiting lists ... so is Yoga not working for them like it doesn’t work for others?

Why has it appealed to so many people for so many years?

What is Yoga? Well that question is answered very simply in the ancient texts put together thousands of years ago: “Yoga is an attempt to still/quieten the mind”.

It appears however that The Times headlines stem from a somewhat confused and modern notion that it is about losing weight, burning calories, getting thin and looking like Geri Haliwell or Madonna.

Yoga is NOT gymnastics or a Get Fit method for downsizing your bottom!

It encompasses a wider dimension. Yoga basically means ‘yolking’ or ‘unity’, the unity being of mind and body and spirit.

For some of us it can take a life-time to truly understand what that really means.

Anyone can study Yoga to any stage, at any age, in any state of health, from any nationality or religion, since yoga is definitely not about contorting yourself into weird and impossible (for some of us) shapes. Yes, postures are a part of Yoga (more so here in the West) and they help develop flexibility (which tends to lessen for most of us in older age and increasing sedentary life and with certain ailments), strength and stamina.

But so are breathing exercises, sound work and developing concentration. It is well documented that positive visualisation helps healing in post-operative situations and this we also learn to do.

Our bodies are amazingly intricate structures with amazing restorative powers.

When we alter our physical condition through yoga postures, breath control and concentration/meditation, we alter the condition of our minds and emotions.

What we do, how we are, how we think, what we hope for are all connected, so in yoga we learn to use positive affirmations to turn us from despair or disappointment to strong and healthy human beings. The postures attempt to develop our poise, grace and balance and balance in the body will transmit to our minds and hearts and spread, in some form or other, to our families and friends and everyone we meet.

Having shown the article to several of my classes, my students are mystified. They ENJOY their stretching and relaxation, they feel better for it, they love the time they have for themselves. They are all learning to work within their capabilities. They are finding out how they feel and if it happens not to be too good at the moment, they are learning how to change.

DEFEND A NORTHERN GREEN ENVIRONMENTAL RIM (OF LINCOLN) Lincoln is bursting out all over, and, around Brayford Pool in particular, upwards as well!

Predictably, the University’s economic engine seems to be driving investment activity that promises, long-term, to put Lincoln on the map in more ways than one.

The questions for all of us, living in the pleasant countryside around, seem to be: Do we really want Lincoln to develop outwards as Nottingham has?

Should we tolerate, as the people of Nottingham did, the absorption of their nearby villages as mere suburbs?

So, do we want Nettleham’s village status protected, along with that of Riseholme, Greetwell and Burton-by-Lincoln? For we are all interdependent in this aim.

With a bit of thought about the way in which the planning system works, we can find the solution in two very important official documents. One, the Lincolnshire Structure Plan, contains overarching policies designed to protect the countryside by regulating development across the whole county.

The Structure Plan includes Policy NE1 (a reference to the North East Quadrant of the Lincoln area). This protects land here designated as Open Countryside.

The other Policy LPA8 (a reference to the Lincoln [City] Policy Area) regulates the important Green Wedge Policy, so is crucial to maintaining our detachment from the urban area.

The City itself is classed as one of the seven District Authorities in Lincolnshire, and has its own planning strategy drawn up (as are all the other local plans) at public expense.

Our own West Lindsey area plan includes Strat. (Strategy) 12 and Strat. 13. These correspond to Structure Plan policies NEl and LPA8. The Planning Authority has the responsibility for determining planning application consent in accordance with the local policies and also various Government documents.

Elected Councillors serving on their respective Planning committees determine each application with guidance from professional planning officers. Local plan documents come up for renewal and scrutiny every 5 to 10 years or so.

Both the County and West Lindsey District plans are at the “Chrysalis” stage between the Examination in Public by a Government Planning Inspector, and the final approval by the Government Minister.

Only last year, residents of Riseholme were shocked by a proposal to build 800 new houses there, together with facilities. The project would have obliterated acres of pasture and parkland. This beautiful area, designated as of “Outstanding Landscape Value” was also discovered in the policies, (to everyone’s relief!) to be protected within its own Green Wedge! So it’s worth getting to know the system.

Policies which we ourselves pay expert Planning professionals to put in place, can, and have in the past, been contravened and undermined by errors in decision making. Anyone interested can read about planning matters in their local library.

NETTLEHAM LADIES CLUB The Ladies Club were again blessed with good weather, a wonderful crowd of supporters and many valiant helpers at their Spring Fayre which took place on Saturday 6 May 2006 at Nettleham Village Hall.

The Fayre, in aid of the British Heart Foundation, was opened by Helena Mair and raised the splendid total of over £1,300 for the charity.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the many local businesses who gave us items and donations, and to all those who kindly supported the event in any way.

1ST NETTLEHAM 4TH LINCOLN SCOUT GROUP REPORT

Firstly we have two very important messages of appreciation. We have been very fortunate to receive two very generous donations.

Our first comes from none other than Nettleham Now, which has made a very kind donation in support of the playgroup. Our sincere thanks go to the Editor and also all the distributors, who kindly give up their time to deliver the publication.

The Lincoln District team are busy arranging all sorts of events and competitions. Our Scout HQ window is adorned with 20th birthday stained glass window pictures from the Beavers.

Another thank you goes to local business woman, Claire Armitage, a Hearing Aid Specialist at Lincoln Nuffield Hospital, who has also made a very generous donation to us.

The cubs are involved with a year-long programme of competitions ranging from quizzes to draughts, swimming to football, with everything possible in between, to gain points for a 90 years celebration trophy at the end of the year. So far our Thursday cubs, (Ospreys) are standing in joint second place.

We are extremely grateful for the support that these donations will provide to our playgroup and would like to extend our sincere thanks.

In the Annual Wolf Cub Football Tournament, Friday cubs, (Kestrels) have recently got through to the Third Place play off against 10th Waddington, with Waddington taking the 3rd place trophy. This was a pulsating match and a close 3-2 score line. Well done to all the cubs who took part.

We all joined in the St George’s Day parade on Sunday, 23rd April 2006.

I am sure there can be no better place to parade than around the Castle and Bailgate area of Lincoln. It certainly makes a wonderful backdrop and the service in the Cathedral adds to a great occasion. Nettleham Scout Group was well represented - see our pictures!

Two of our girls from the Scout Troop have had their picture on Blue Peter to represent the group for their effort in collecting for this year’s Blue Peter Appeal for Childline.

Our plans for the roof and meeting room extension are progressing. We now have planning permission for the work, but this is only the first stage in a very long process.

The units are now preparing for the various outdoor activities during the summer months - camping, gliding, football, trips out, etc. Who says children these days spend all their time on computers, perhaps they should join Nettleham Scout Group and find out the real truth!!

Another busy few months and lots of celebrations - this year sees the 20th birthday celebrations for Beavers and 90 years for the cub sections.

Once again we have had a very busy term and with the better weather, the children have been out in the garden enjoying the sunshine. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful secure garden for the children to play in with a slide and playhouse. We also have the hard standing area which we use when children play with the bikes, tricycles, scooters and cars. These areas provide plenty of room for them to run off their excess energy.

As a number of children will be leaving for school in September, we will have a number of places available. Please contact our Waiting List Secretary Louise Bromfield on (01522) 752738 if you would like to arrange a visit to playgroup or for further information.

News from New Zealand After living in NZ now for just over a year, we thought it would be a good idea to mark the anniversary with an update of our experiences so far, for all the people that know us (but that we haven’t been in regular touch with), and what better way than through Nettleham News.

We arrived in Balclutha in the South Island in April 2005 to the start of a Southern Hemisphere Autumn, after a year of planning, filling in forms and red tape. Despite the planning and having visited NZ on two previous occasions, the realities of finding yourself living on the opposite side of the world, with only a handful of suitcases and a whole new life to organise hits you like a tonne of lead, no house, no car, no job, no school - the list seems endless! But the beauty of living in a small rural community, not unlike Nettleham, is the unlimited help and friendliness of the local people and pretty soon things started to take shape.

I got a job straight away by walking off the street into a kitchen manufacturer on Friday and started the following Wednesday (New Zealand has the lowest unemployment rate in the developed world).

Our daughters Emily and Elizabeth started school that week. Understandably starting new schools was tough for them for the first couple of weeks, but now they are so happy with lots of new kiwi friends that any suggestion of going back to William Farr is met with a resounding NO WAY DAD! It’s a huge relief for Bridget and myself seeing the girls so happy, the only downside is that they are picking up kiwi accents, which I suppose is understandable, but I keep reminding them where they are from and how they should speak and sound, but then again, how many teenage girls listen to Dad! Bridget works on a volunteer basis in the High School canteen, quite a bit easier preparing 100 lunches, rather than 600 at Lincoln Minster School!

One of the remarkable things about living where we do is the small population. New Zealand has just over 4 million people, over 3 million of those live on the North Island, mostly around Auckland, leaving around 800,000 people to inhabit the South Island, which means that whatever you chose to do, or wherever you go, there will be no crowds or queues when you

arrive and if you want to find a spot to be on your own, whether on a picture-perfect South Pacific beach for a picnic (if there are more than two other cars there, you move on to the next beach) or a spot on the river bank to try your hand at catching trout or salmon, you are never more than half an hour away. We are even able to drive two and a half hours and be on an Alpine Ski Field (where the Austrian Ski team come to practice during the Northern Hemisphere Summer) and for the princely sum of £18 each you get all equipment, lift passes and a ski lesson - a real bargain by anyone’s standards.

As we start our second year down under, our main focus is going to be on building our new home. I have already built two new homes for other people and I have promised Bridget that she will be next (as long as she is the apprentice builder!).

Lastly, if anyone is thinking of a trip to the other side of the world to see for themselves, then what are you waiting for - we would love to see you.
