Welcome to the bumper Winter/Christmas edition for 2005 - and yes, once again I have had to add an extra four pages to accommodate all the news, views and information about all the goings-on in and around the village. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading it.

April 2006 marks the twentieth anniversary of the terrible disaster in Chernobyl, when a nuclear power station catastrophically failed, spreading deadly radiation over a wide area.

In the Parish Council news on pages 7 and 9, you will see that there is to be a Village Meeting in January (also see Noticeboard on page 3).

Nettleham Now It is anticipated that this indispensable guide to businesses, services and amenities in and around Nettleham will once again be published and delivered along with the spring edition of this magazine in March 2006.

I would be most grateful if all the clubs, societies, associations, special interest groups and any other organisations in the village would let me know of any changes to the details which appeared in their entry last year and if any new groups have emerged during the past year, then do please let me know your details too.

The Hallam Brothers Some readers will probably know something of the story behind the sad little memorial stone to the murdered Lincoln post-boy, which is in the graveyard beneath the large horse chestnut tree.

In 1848, the entire story was copied out by hand in tiny copperplate handwriting by William Borman (probably from newspaper cuttings of the time). Written in the language of the day, it’s very long, but I believe it will give you a glimpse into the days when this murder, and other criminal acts of the Hallam brothers, took place. The first half of the story begins on page 65 and I hope to be able to print the second half in the spring 2006 edition of the magazine.

Nettleham Investment Club The Club has now been in existence for five years and despite a difficult period following its original formation, it is now doing rather well.

The legacy lives on - today there is still terrible suffering and deprivation on a large scale in Belarus and on page 17 you can read about the important work that is being done there to help the children of the area.

Christmas is a special time for children and I would urge any of our readers, who think they may be able to help in any way, to contact the charity that is doing so much to bring a little happiness and hope to the children in the beleaguered country of Belarus.

New Year’s Day Village Walk This event, which has become an annual feature of our village calendar, once again takes place on Sunday 1 January 2006.

It is the perfect way to walk off the excesses of the festive season, breathe some fresh air, take some healthy exercise and all in good company too! (See the Noticeboard on page 3 for details).

Bike Night Not surprisingly, a number of residents disagreed with the views expressed in the article about this event in the autumn edition and this has resulted in a lively and interesting postbag (see pages 22/23).

Great! This is just what we need to ensure that Nettleham News remains a lively forum for all kinds of views and opinions from everyone in the parish. A frank exchange of opinions may perhaps enable alternative points of view to be better understood and appreciated. However, there are a few misconceptions and incorrect assumptions in the letters and I endeavour to address these on page 27 of the magazine.

You may remember that this magazine was runner-up in a national competition for village publications earlier this year and one of the main reasons cited for its placement was “lively editorial”. I would very much like to maintain this tradition, but rely entirely on you, the readers, to provide the means to do so.

This is a unique opportunity for everyone in the village to have their say about how they would like to see the future development of Nettleham and I strongly urge anyone who has the slightest interest in the village to come to this meeting and, even if you do not wish to contribute any ideas, at least listen to what is being said and so be aware of what is going on.

And Finally...

Unbelievably, this edition of the magazine is the last for 2005 and Christmas is upon us again.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the team who make Nettleham News a reality throughout the year - the advertisers whose support generates the funds to finance the publication, the distributors who kindly turn out in all weathers to pop it through your letterbox, Ken and Ann Harrison who assist with counting out magazines and with advertising, Geoff Campling who helps me deliver the boxes of magazines to the distributors, Janice Clayton who produces the “talking” Nettleham News and my wife, Sheila, who does the proof-reading.

If your organisation is holding an event - do let me know about it well in advance, so that it can receive some valuable (and free!) publicity in the pages of the magazine, and also perhaps coverage of the event itself on the day.

New Nettleham Book n Saturday 22 October 2005, the newly published book about Nettleham in days gone by was launched and Pearl Vose, the author, was there for those who wished to have a special dedication personally signed in the front of the book entitled Nettleham Yesteryears.

It was a very special occasion for Pearl, made even more special when her son, Paul and his family appeared, having travelled all the way from Northern Ireland to be there on the day. It was a complete surprise and Pearl was delighted to see them all.

Pearl and her husband Bob have lived in Nettleham for over forty years and their two sons Paul and Mark grew up in the village.

There are over eighty photographs in the book, all collected over the years by Pearl whilst carrying out extensive research into the history of the village during the course of gaining a teaching qualification. The pictures were specially selected by Pearl from her huge collection and all are accompanied by fascinating historical facts and amusing anecdotes about the village and the people who lived and worked here through the years.

There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon and many took advantage of the tea, coffee and biscuits which were available, whilst they sat and chatted and perhaps reminisced about life and times past.

Many of them could still remember some of the people shown in the photographs, together with scenes of the village as it was in those days gone by.

Nettleham Parish Council News Parish Charter A Rural White Paper - The Future: A Fair Deal for Rural England was published in November 2000 and set out a number of measures to give local people more involvement in the development of their communities.

As part of this, Quality Councils (such as Nettleham Parish Council) are encouraged to prepare a Parish Plan. This will provide a statement of the special needs and desires of communities, which can be taken into account with relation to District Plans and will have some influence on future Area Strategic Plans.

Financial help will be given towards formulating a Parish Plan.

The White Paper also refers to the fact that Quality Councils, after consultation, will be given full opportunity to take on services and functions within their capabilities. This would have the benefit for the community of bringing the point of service provision closer to local people who benefit from it. We assume adequate funding will be made available for the tasks undertaken, which could comprise a number of the following activities: Street Cleaning

To do this successfully, there will be the need for consultation with all parishioners and as a starting point we will have a Village Meeting in January 2006, which we hope will be well attended (see pages 3 and 9 for details).

Cricket Score Box

responsible bodies and they will again be consulting with interested parties on the idea of a safety zone around the school. The idea of closing the layby, we are told, would not help the problem without the safety zone.

The village Cricket Club needs a new score box at Mulsanne due to the substantial difficulties experienced by the club with the present arrangement. The new box will also provide for equipment storage. The cricket club are prepared to fund 25% of the cost from their funds and are looking for support from the Parish Council for the balance. A decision on this is currently on hold until the availability of grants and cost of running electricity to the box can be assessed. In addition we still don’t know the future of the Police field, which might possibly be made available for village sports activities, so no decision was made at this time.

A46

Lincolnshire County Council are commencing consultation on making the A46 a 50 mph speed limit in the area of Nettleham Heath. Also the need for the new refuges near Nettleham to be lit to avoid future collisions has been discussed with the County Council.

The County Council are prepared to discuss introduction of traffic calming measures in the village. However we would be expected to contribute half of the cost. It was decided that this was too great a cost for us to consider from current funds and so it was decided not to proceed at this time.

Refuse Collection The refuse collection service on Greetwell Lane recommenced in September and is open every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 8.00am - 11.00am. This is a great way to get rid of all that refuse which does not fit the categories of rubbish defined for the multitude of bins we currently all have. This service will take anything you have - you just need to get it there.

Church Street Resurfacing

It was agreed with the County Council that the road surface on Church Street is getting very bad and needs resurfacing. At the same time, the road at the bus stop in front of the old Institute building (Halifax Agency) will be marked out as a bus stop to avoid vehicles parking there and causing congestion when buses arrive.

The Parish Council are keen to ensure that the information which appears on the website is right up to date.

QUALITY COUNCIL

This is an important opportunity for people to have a say in the ways they want to see the village improve over the coming years. Further information can be found on the specific topic of the Parish Plan on page 9 of this edition of Nettleham News.

There was nothing sinister in this; there is no master plan to cram more housing into every available space. On the contrary, the Property Committee of the Parish Council have been touring the village to look at the standard of repair and 7

PARISH PLAN We now have in place a volunteer committee to consider the formulation of a Parish Plan.

The committee held its first meeting on Thursday 3 November 2005 at Mulsanne Park and Councillor John Evans was appointed Chairman and Dr Ross Marshall, Secretary. Officers from the Community Council for Lincolnshire and West Lindsey District Council were also in attendance, to offer preliminary advice.

It is important to note, in regard to the committee objective, that it is the Government’s intention to give rural communities greater opportunity to manage their own affairs and to establish a vision for their own town or village, to guide its future developments. Some communities have already prepared village design statements, or carried out a parish appraisal. Many have looked at the local

housing need and the allocation of land for industrial and residential development. A Parish Plan is a major project and must be more than simply a design statement or appraisal document combined.

It should cover everything of relevance to all people who live in the area and include social, economic and environmental issues.

It will address the needs of the entire community and as an inclusive process, everyone should have an opportunity to participate in its preparation. Its aim is to provide an action plan, identifying how community aspirations will be met.

The brief the committee has to address is substantial and will inevitably, at some stage, involve all residents who will be canvassed and asked to complete a questionnaire (yet to be formulated). In the meantime, if any member of the Parish feels they have experience which would

he Parish Council elections will take place on Thursday 4th May 2006 and those elected will serve on the Parish Council for a period of four years.

The following are the criteria for candidature and membership of the Parish Council: ■ The candidate must be a resident of the parish, who has been on the electoral register for a period of least 12 months prior to the election, unless they are: (a) an owner or tenant of land in the parish for at least a period of 12 months, or (b) have lived within 3 miles of the parish boundary for the same period of time, or (c) their principal place of work is within the parish.

■ A suitable declaration will have to be made if the candidature name for Parish Office does not appear on the register, but qualifies under one of the alternatives mentioned above.

■ Nomination forms will be available at the Parish Office during February 2006 and any person interested in serving on the Parish Council can contact the Clerk at any time for advice on or before February 2006 and to request a nomination form. These forms give details of number of sponsors required as signatories to the proposal for the resident as candidate for the election.

If there are more than 12 nominations, an election will be called, if there are less than 12, certain criteria may be invoked which include the co-option of a Councillor from residents who have not stood for office at the time the election took place.

It was agreed at this first meeting to hold a Public Meeting to enable residents to express views on matters relating to village life and services that might be included in the plan, whether it is leisure, youth provision, transport for the elderly, or any aspect of our medical services, to name just a few. The public meeting will be held on WEDNESDAY 11 JANUARY 2006 at 7.00pm in the Large Hall at the Old School.

DISPLAY CABINET IN THE LARGE HALL AT THE OLD SCHOOL The Parish Council gratefully received a bequest, for the benefit of the Parish, from the estate of the late Mr Arthur L Bird, a former resident. The Parish Council considered how this bequest should be spent, recognising the need to identify the expenditure with the generosity of this gift.

After considering the matter carefully, the Parish Council decided to commission a display cabinet, in a style sympathetic to the Old School premises, where items of historical parochial interest could be displayed.

The cabinet was designed and made by a Nettleham craftsman and is now installed in the large hall. A suitable inscription will be added to record the generosity of this gift.

The Council would be delighted to hear from any resident who consider that they might have some item relating to the history or comununity of the Parish suitable for display in the cabinet that might be loaned on a temporary or permanent basis.

The Twinning Experience aving moved to the village only a year ago, the twinning gave us an opportunity to meet people from Mulsanne and from our own community as well. We had a hugely enjoyable 5 days.

H

We were slightly apprehensive before Antoine and Henriette arrived, although we knew a little about them, having exchanged emails before the visit. Antoine had recently retired from his job as PE teacher in a secondary school and Henriette had worked as a school secretary. They had two children. Antoine was learning English and Italian, although Henriette could only speak French.

The first evening was one of many spent talking for hours and hours around the dining table. Issues such as the ‘yes/no’ referendum, which Antoine predicted would be a decisive ‘no’; the education system; the fact that houses in Sarthe often had 2 kitchens, one for preparing food, the other for entertaining; tennis, netball (what it is!); food; English gardens; English carpets, etc, etc!! The conversation became increasingly fluent with the quantity of wine consumed!

We enjoyed the various events laid on by the committee - the dinner at Norton Disney, the Batemans trip, the trip to York and the welcome evening at Anne’s house.

Antoine and Henriette loved Lincoln, the lovely gardens in Nettleham and English breakfasts. They couldn’t understand why English houses didn’t have shutters - didn’t we get burgled?

Antoine was determined to teach the children the months of the year in French and they were very sad to say goodbye to the pair of them. Emily taught Antoine how to play netball and Timothy can’t wait to visit the racecourse at Le Mans, featured on the T-shirt they bought him.

We look forward very much to our visit to Mulsanne (and the Le Mans racecourse!) next year.

I must start with a big thank you to Bob and Debs Carruthers at the White Hart Inn for their wonderful donation of £770.81 to the Nettleham LIVES First Responders scheme.

The money came from the ‘Bike Night’ they organised back in August. A truly amazing amount on what was an amazing night.

Thank you again to everyone involved in the planning and organisation of the event and to everyone who dug deep into their pockets on the night.

On the call-out front we have been kept very busy. The group have attended nearly 70 call-outs so far this year - already exceeding last year’s total.

We still endeavour to run the scheme 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with any ‘off line’ time being extremely minimal. To keep up this high level of cover we do need more volunteers to join our group as First Responders. I do believe the group is performing a valuable service for the residents of Nettleham and it would be such a shame if we have to lower the amount of cover that is presently given, due to a lack of First Responders.

Can You Help?

If you have some spare time - 3 or 4 hours a week… why not give us a ring and find out more about the First Responders scheme in Nettleham.

Finding your address One thing that is very apparent on the call-outs we have attended is how difficult it is to find house numbers, especially at night. Some are badly weathered, some are concealed by plants and hedging and some just don’t exist at all. Please take a walk outside and check the condition of your house number, a quick coat of paint or a trim with secateurs could make finding your property so much easier in an emergency. One other suggestion - after calling the ambulance at night, switch on your house lights to make the property stand out, making it easier to find. In an emergency every second counts.

Message in a bottle When answering any emergency call-out the ambulance crew require personal and medical details and in some situations this information is very difficult to find.

‘The Lincoln and Hykeham Lions Club’ have kindly donated a quantity of plastic bottles for ‘Message in a Bottle’ - a simple idea that encourages people to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common place where they can easily be found in an emergency.

The small plastic bottle containing all your details is kept in the fridge. The emergency services will know you have a bottle by displaying two labels, one on the inside of your front door and the other on the door of your fridge.

The bottles are free and they come with full instructions. You can collect your free bottle from Krystals Chemist in the village or telephone the number at the end of this article and we will deliver one to your door.

With Christmas fast approaching, I am repeating my request for any old and 13

unused mobile phones to be donated to our LIVES group here in Nettleham.

Hopefully when ‘Father Christmas’ has delivered his presents on Christmas Day, some of you will be in possession of a new mobile phone and you may be wondering what to do with your old one …think LIVES! LIVES have joined a scheme that reconditions old mobile phones and then sends them on to developing countries. In return our group will benefit financially for every mobile phone we can collect.

So if you do have any unwanted mobile phones (chargers also accepted), please take them to Krystals Chemist in the village and drop them in the box provided or telephone the number below and we will arrange to collect them from you.

Welcome to the winter edition of Police News for 2005.

I’d firstly like to apologise for missing the Autumn edition of Nettleham News.

Hopefully I can make up for it in this edition and bring you all up to speed on what’s happening in the area. Before I do that can I take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone here at Nettleham

police station. We hope you all had a good year, but whatever kind of year you’ve had, we hope you have a better one in 2006.

Before I move onto crime matters it is with great pleasure that I can inform you that Andrea Smalley, our PCSO for the past two years, has finally been accepted into Lincolnshire Police as a Police Constable.

She started her training on the 10 October 2005 at Lincolnshire Police HQ, and after many weeks of training she will be posted to the Skegness area.

Andrea has been a great asset to us here at Nettleham police station and she was warmly welcomed by the communities in which she patrolled. She made many new friends and has asked me to pass on her thanks to everyone for their help and support. Although she will be missed, I hope you will join us in wishing her all the best in her new career, and if you visit Skegness in the summer keep an eye out for her!!

Although Andrea has moved on to pastures new, we have been fortunate in gaining two new replacements. They are Louise White and Jackie Parker.

Louise started in the area in summer this year and has already become a familiar face in the village. She can often be seen around the schools and The Green, so please say ‘hello’ when you see her. But a word of warning - if you’re thinking of running away from her for any reason, she was a fitness instructor for over 10 years, and is a regular at a running club and she is VERY fast - you have been warned!

Jackie started with us shortly after Louise and can also be seen walking around the village providing reassurance and a visible presence where and when it’s needed.

Jackie comes to us from Lincoln police station where she worked as a Traffic Warden. She knows more about parking offences than anyone and will be keeping an eye on several areas around the village!

Their powers to deal with wider issues have been extended recently, so be careful!

However, both Louise and Jackie are very approachable, friendly people and bring with them their own skills and talents which can only benefit the community.

They’ve both been with us for a number of weeks now and have settled in well.

News They have already got to know the area, and a number of people within the community, and are relishing their new roles. They are keen to become involved in community issues, so if there are any clubs, organisations or groups who would like them to visit then please get in touch.

On the crime front, things are still looking good for the area. Crime figures show that on the whole crime continues to fall in the area that is covered by Nettleham police station, a statistic which has been the case for some time now.

Specifically, the number of assaults which have occurred are down by 25%, with nearly 85% of them detected. House and commercial burglaries are down by 11%, and the number of incidents involving Fraud are down by a massive 58%. Drug offences are down by 33% with a 100% success rate, and there has been no rise in the number of thefts.

The only blot on the landscape is in the area of damage. This has increased, particularly in the area of damage to vehicles - broken wing mirrors, scratches on doors and the odd broken window, etc.

Many of the offences are occurring overnight and we are taking steps to try to resolve the problem by targeting the main areas, with officers out and about on foot.

The statistics cover all the areas that Nettleham police station cover, so don’t panic, all the offences of damage haven’t occurred solely in Nettleham. However, as always, if you see or hear of anything suspicious, then please get in touch straight away. Don’t forget that there has been a reduction in crime generally, so the area is becoming a safer place all the time.

I’d like to take all the credit and say it’s down to the police officers that work from Nettleham police station, but of course that isn’t entirely true. Andrea, and now Louise and Jackie, have played a major part in the reduction of crime by carrying out patrols in the areas where they are most needed, as well as reporting anything they come across and passing on information given to them by local residents.

But of course the main reason for the overall drop in crime is down to you, the local residents. Without your help and support, many of the crimes which were detected wouldn’t have been. We rely heavily on your involvement, statements and information, keeping a watchful eye around the village and reporting anything you feel is suspicious in your overwhelming desire to protect your village and its residents. The number of calls and e-mails I’ve received over the past twelve months from residents reporting things has increased 100-fold. It is because of the

good relations we have built together that we are able to work together in our efforts to keep the crime rate falling. From all of us at Nettleham police station - thank you!

When reporting crime it is vitally important that you telephone as soon as possible, preferably when the crime is happening.

I may have mentioned it before, but I can’t emphasise how important it is for us to attend when the crime is being committed.

We still get many people who telephone or email me and leave me messages to say things like, “I couldn’t sleep last night because there was a group of drunken yobs outside shouting and swearing! Can you have a word with them?”, or “I’d like to report a suspicious male who was hanging around a neighbour’s house last week”. To deal with incidents effectively, we need to know who’s causing the problems. The best way for us to find out is to attend the location whilst they are still there causing the problems. That way we can identify them, deal with them and hopefully prevent a problem from escalating. So if there is something taking place, whether it’s antisocial behaviour, suspicious people, or suspicious vehicles, then please ring us and report it. DON’T ring Nettleham police station if the incident is happening whilst you’re calling, telephone HQ on 01522 882222 and report it. That way our communication centre can contact us on the radio and we will attend as soon as possible.

Although Bonfire Night has been and gone I would like to remind you, as I did some time ago, that there are new rules and regulations relating to the use of fireworks, new age limits and set times after which it will be illegal to set them off. The reason for doing this now is because there tend to be more occasions during the long, dark evenings where people let off fireworks at parties, presumably because they can be seen better than in summer.

The new laws are effective immediately.

Anyone over the age of 16 years who commits the following offences can be dealt with by way of a Fixed Penalty Ticket to the sum of £80.

1) No person shall throw, cast or fire a firework in or into any highway, street, thoroughfare or public place.

2) No person under the age of 18 shall possess an adult firework in a public place.

Public place is defined as anywhere the public have permitted access, whether on payment or otherwise. This offence does not apply to sparklers.

3) No person shall possess a Category 4 firework, ie one used for a professional display.

4) No person shall use an adult firework during night hours unless it is a permitted firework night, local authority display or to celebrate a national event. Night Hours are from 11pm to 7am, seven days a week.

Permitted fireworks night will be 5th November, where fireworks will be allowed until midnight on that date, but no later!!

National events will include New Years Eve, where fireworks will be permitted until 1am on the 1st January. Anyone, under 16 years, committing these offences will be dealt with in the usual manner. Please remember that if you are having a private display at any other time of year you must not ignite fireworks after 11pm. If anyone has any questions then please contact me.

Can I remind you all that it is still illegal to drive and use a mobile phone. Some people are still committing offences, and they don’t even realise it! The purpose of banning people from driving and using mobile phones at the same time is to reduce the number of accidents caused by people not paying attention. I still see people, especially van drivers, who carry on talking into their phones despite the fact there’s a police car behind them! Doesn’t this prove they’re not paying attention?

There’s a £30 ticket with your name on it if you continue to ignore this rule. To clarify what the law states, driving is from the time you leave Point A to the time you reach your destination (Point B). If your phone rings in between those points either ignore it, remember to switch it off before you begin your journey next time or pull off the road, put your handbrake on, switch off your engine and then answer the phone. If you answer the phone whilst stationary at traffic lights or a junction, this will still be classified as ‘driving’ and you will be given a ticket. Use of the phone also includes texting. TWENTY YEARS ON hristmas is a time for children and celebration and whilst most of us are enjoying the Christmas holiday period and perhaps over-indulging ourselves with gifts, food and drink and all the traditional seasonal festivities, perhaps we can spare a thought for a group of youngsters who have been largely forgotten as the years go by.

C

These are the children whose lives were torn apart by the Chernobyl disaster, in April 1986, in the Belarus region of the former USSR. Twenty years on they are still suffering terribly from the legacy of the world’s worst nuclear disaster - the radioactive fallout was 90 times greater than that of Hiroshima!

Belarus was the region hardest hit by the disaster and, by 1990, 2 million people, and over 250,000 hectares of agricultural land had been heavily contaminated. Today these people continue to live in these areas - there is no access to “clean� food and they still till their fields, herd their cattle and eat the contaminated produce of their labours. It is estimated that it will take up to 400 years to rid Belarus of this insidious contamination.

The impact of all this on the children born in the wake of the disaster is beyond comprehension. The rise in childhood cancers is phenominal.

Leukaemia, tumours and thyroid cancers are rife amongst the younger generation and sadly many children are born terribly disfigured and deformed. Eating the contaminated food has also brought about a huge rise in the incidence of intestinal cancers and chronic heart defects.

Doctors and scientists estmate that 90% of the children of Belarus are suffering from the effects of severe contamination.

But we can help - through the New Little Stars Link charity, which offers children of Belarus the opportunity to come to this country for a short period of respite care.

Formed in 2004, the aim of this charity is to bring around 20 children from Belarus to this country for about a month every summer. They are often the children of Belarusian firemen, 250,000 of whom were called in to help with the clean-up operation and of whom 17,000 died and over 70,000 left permanently disabled.

The aim is to boost the immune systems of the children by eating nourishing food and vitamins, escaping briefly from the relentless radiation and breathing clean air. It is estimated that this trip of a lifetime could add up to 2 years to their life expectancy.

New Little Stars is seeking host families for these children - just by welcoming one of these children into the comfort of your own home and caring and nurturing them as if they were your own, can be the most rewarding and fulfilling experience. Approximately three days a week, the children will be encouraged to participate in activities which will be organised on their behalf. An interpreter will also accompany the group and will be on hand around the clock, in case there are any language difficulties.

There is no need to over-indulge or spoil the children - simply by allowing them the comforts of your home, the company of your friends and family and joining in with the rest of the group for the organised trips out, makes it a very special time for them.

Every child will have had medical clearance to come to the UK and pose no threat whatsoever to the health of you or your family.

The children will have been chosen to stay with you for one or more of the following reasons: They have had cancer and are now in remission following treatment They live in a contaminated part of their country They have been evacuated from a very heavily contaminated area They have other illnesses related to the situation in Belarus, or have recently recovered from operations They live in an orphanage - it is estimated that there are nearly 30,000 orphan children in Belarus (we would only recommend that experienced host families host orphan children).

Readers Letters From Middlesex

I

bought Cosmopolitan on a whim. Usually put off by its sexually charged content, that particular month I had raced through my usual magazines and was in need of something to keep me going until next month. The travel promotion in that particular issue centred around Lincoln, and what it had to offer. Being great ‘foodies’ my boyfriend Pete and I drank in the descriptions of fresh, natural produce and companies with the ‘Rick Stein Food Hero’ seal of approval. I eagerly began planning our holiday, spurred on by promises of shops, shops, and more shops in the Cathedral quarter.

I booked a week away immediately, but it turned out that Lincoln would have much more to offer than retail therapy.

As we drove into the sleepy village of Nettleham, the sun came out as if to welcome us. For a reason we still cannot fathom, it felt eerily familiar to us both: the Beck with its resident ducks, the church, village hall and quaint village shops. Perhaps it was because we had both spent so many hours exploring model villages as children, marvelling at cricket games on the green, model trains chugging past and peering inside the tiny cottages and shops.

We found a parking space (a rare sight at home!) and began to explore. Having both forgotten to bring a book on holiday, ‘Autumn Leaves’ bookshop was our first port of call. I spent several years working in one of the large, American-style book stores at home, and although impressed with the large array of stock and the computer’s ability to locate obscure, long-forgotten titles it always felt slightly clinical and far too impersonal. But here was the sort of store I dreamed about with its slightly cluttered shelves and well loved, thumbed through paperbacks. There was no erratic jazz music being piped through speakers overhead, no ‘3 for 2’ offers and no coffee bar attached.

Pete found his chosen read quickly and was keen to explore outside, but I was reluctant to leave the cosy confines of the store and lingered awhile longer, savouring the relaxed atmosphere.

Eventually, after ten minutes in the nearby gift store just marvelling at the superb quality of the greetings cards, and five in the Co-op, we eventually made our way to ‘Corner Cottage’, our home for the week, and Nettleham as a whole. We ate like kings whatever we chose, from the fish and chips in the ‘Black Horse’ to

the butcher in the village and his superb back bacon. Leafing through Nettleham News at night, it dawned on us that this was the England we thought no longer existed. Everyone was friendly, relaxed and willing to help. Neighbours looked out for one another; crime was being tackled with the help of PC Mark Lassmans and a sense of community prevailed, thanks to the Christmas Fayres and annual Summer Carnival.

Whilst out and about, motorists gave way to me, cruising down the ‘A’ roads was bliss and you could pop into a tearoom on a whim without having to take out a second mortgage for a cup of Earl Grey and a scone. And there followed a blissful seven days, spent covering as much ground as possible to make the most of our time in Lincoln.

Reluctantly driving home the next Friday, we were stuck in traffic for an excruciating two hours. Rain drummed on the car roof and dark crept in. As we hit the M4 and I reached for another American hard gum, I was hit by the dawning realisation that we didn’t have to endure this for the rest of our lives. The daily grind of the Underground wasn’t compulsory, and we could have the beauty of Lincoln in our back gardens if we just moved up north.

So although it will be a big sacrifice on my part (I have not yet lived away from my parents) I have become convinced that to achieve true happiness, quality of life and peace of mind, a move to Lincoln (or ideally Nettleham) is what we need. I am sure we aren’t the first to reach such a conclusion, and won’t be the last. To relax me in the meantime, while we do our research and organise a mortgage, I have taken up yoga. And during relaxation at the beginning and end of each session, it is Nettleham I visualize.

We would both like to thank Susan Downs for the excellent accommodation and offers of help finding a property, which we hope to take up soon. Also, a special thank you to D J Fenwick for his nature-inspired poetry, which we read aloud from the Nettleham News well into the night). Lastly can I just say how much we enjoyed reading Nettleham News whilst we were holidaying.

Despite having no involvement in getting kids to school, I enjoyed the letter from the ‘Hard-working Mum’, it was so articulate and heartfelt.

But why 'name and address withheld'? She is clearly not ashamed of her views, and nor should she be. The same goes for her Mum's piece. Has Nettleham become the sort of place where frank expressions of opinion (free from any abuse or personal attacks) would cause trouble for their writers?

Free speech is not well served by anonymity, it needs discussion carried on face-to-face, with mutual respect for differing views. Except in the rare cases where anonymity is really necessary, I think Nettleham News should be reluctant to publish anonymous views, even if it means missing out on feisty letters like these.

(On a totally different topic, if modesty permits, might the Editor share the secret of how his window-box Busy Lizzies have stayed healthy and floriferous long after mine, and those of others, are yellowing or defunct?).

Bill Ball Editor: It is a sad when a person feels uncomfortable in expressing a personal view perhaps for fear of retribution or castigation, but sadly it is symptomatic of the times in which we now live.

For their own reasons, correspondents sometimes request that their names and addresses should be withheld and I feel obliged to respect their wishes.

From time to time I comment on topics relating to the village (the Bike Night in the last edition for instance) and it is naturally from a personal viewpoint. It would be fairly safe to assume that anything not attributed comes from me.

Regarding the Busy Lizzies there is no mysterious secret to their longevity, I am as amazed as you at their tenacity to life!

I can only put it down to their position (facing north and receiving little direct sunlight) and the fact that up to the time of writing we have had no frost.

But severe weather is forecast for the coming months and I’m fairly certain that their days are sadly numbered!

By the time this edition is distributed they will undoubtedly have been replaced by something more hardy.

Readers Letters From Our Neighbours at Riseholme Further to the article published in the Autumn 2005 edition of Nettleham News, the Friends of Riseholme are pleased to say that the Inspector’s Report into the Draft Lincolnshire Structure Plan supported the continued status of Lincoln’s northern Green Wedge.

This Structure Plan will remain in force until it is superceded by the East Midlands Structure Plan.

As indicated at the very successful public meeting held at Nettleham Village Hall on 4 October 2005, we will be vigilant for any future attempt to alter the status of the Green Wedge.

Readers The bikers’ visit to Nettleham was a very memorable evening. No doubt they came in numbers greater than expected, but they were all considerate, certainly not intimidating and many turned out to meet them, my 87 year old neighbour took to his sticks and walked to the village to join in the fun.

I rode quite happily on my pedal bike and at no time was I nervous or frightened. As the bikers left the village, I sat with some young children and waved them off. They returned the waves and gave us a ‘toot’. LIVES benefited handsomely, the atmosphere was wonderful and I for one sincerely hope they will return again.

I for one must disagree with you over the Bike Night at the White Hart in Nettleham.

I thought it very well run and enjoyable - I took my grandson to see the bikes - and they were all very well behaved and friendly.

The music was enjoyable and I’ve never seen the village so clean after an event - a bonus was the large amount of money they raised for LIVES. I do hope we have more of the same very soon.

Following an article in the autumn edition of Nettleham News, we feel we have to write a letter of support for the White Hart team.

The Bike Night held on 17 August 2005 was a very interesting and popular event, the atmosphere was relaxed and we felt at ease wandering through the many different motorcycles that had gathered.

Given the prior warning that the police received I am surprised that with their knowledge of similar events that they did not prepare themselves and the area more efficiently. Yes, there was a good turnout of bikes, but we feel that an estimate of 2,000 is a wild exaggeration.

Around five hundred at any one time might be more realistic, but did anyone actually count them?

The sizes and ages of the bikes (and riders!) varied, but the comon factor was the friendly and polite behaviour of the riders. We have never witnessed such an orderly queue at any of the bars in the village!

When we walked home from the White Hart at 10.30pm you could not tell that the event had ever happened, there was no litter evident on the paths or road. The volume of the band was kept at a suitable level and the bikers departed in an orderly fashion. My mother spent the evening in the garden and did not notice any extra noise or traffic created by the event in the central area of the village. Also friends living on Greetwell Lane and Washdyke Lane were unaware that the event had taken place.

As you reported, the event did raise a large amount of money for one of our local charities and we look forward to being able to support any future events held by the White Hart team.

We value the service you provide with Nettleham News but can’t help but feel you are well out of order with your condemnation of such a fantastic and colourful event, which did absolutely no harm whatsoever. Your article contains several prejudicial, presumably deliberate, inaccuracies and your agenda is quite ominous.

Middle aged, middle class (whatever that means) residents of Kingsway for 18 years, we loved it and so did everyone else I have spoken to.

Please stop encouraging a sectarian divide in Nettleham between normal people and the living dead. Bringing a bit of life to this sleepy village is to be encouraged.

We look forward to your magazine, which in the main is not at all bad, but could you try to be a bit more representative of the community, not all of which is prematurely ageing in their gardens, dreaming of the past and moaning about the present.

Although I am not a resident of Nettleham, I have read your review of the fundraising event in the village “A Summer Night to Remember” and I feel I must respond to your comments.

I feel entitled to reply as firstly I was there, and secondly, I have family involved in LIVES in Nettleham and thirdly my wife and I are members of Skellingthorpe Motorcycle Club, whose nominated charities are LIVES and Air Ambulance. So we know something about fundraising.

Your review uses the following language: “mercifully unaware, out of hand, startled and dismayed, distraught, intimidating, scary, nervous disposition, truly frightened and inflicting disruption”. Surely such terms are more approprate to recent tragic events in London than to a local event in one street of a Lincolnshire village. I have to say that your description must be bewildering to anyone who was actually there, whether visiting biker or resident. Yes, the turnout was higher than expected, though certainly not 2,000, but that was hardly anyone’s fault and in no small way helped contibute to a wonderful atmosphere, with non-bikers (presumably locals) wandering along and admiring the machines and chatting to the owners.

And how anyone could be distraught or frightened with half a dozen police officers on hand I cannot imagine.

As for disruption, well let’s be honest, two hours on a Wednesday evening is hardly a major issue and I know that roads are closed when the local Carnival takes place.

You and your village are wonderfully lucky to have such a dedicated and hardworking team of LIVES volunteers, who rely on public generosity to operate and I am sure there are many who in the past, and will in the future, be grateful both to those who have responded (no pun intended!) or been involved in fundraising.

After reading your review I feel as though I was involved in something to be ashamed of, but after re-reading the article several times I suspect that the writer’s personal feelings are to the fore and are not necessarily representative of general opinion. Of course, for every person willing to step forward and be counted, there are a dozen others who will stand on the side lines and criticise, but it was ever thus.

A policy of strict confidentiality is applied and under no circumstances will the name and contact details of the author be published, if a specific request to withhold this information accompanies the original correspondence.

Finally, I congratulate the White Hart and its staff, and the bikers, who I am proud to be associated with, and who always respond generously to charitable causes. I hope the White Hart makes this an annual event with the only lesson learned being to have bigger buckets for collecting donations next time!

Letters I write in reply to the article in the Autumn edition of the Nettleham News: ‘A Summer Evening to Remember’.

I am a long time resident of Nettleham and I receive and read the quarterly magazine with interest.

I am happy to put the case for those many residents of the village who attended - and enjoyed the event. The (unattributed) article is surely over the top in a number of areas - ‘got out of hand’, ‘2000 bikers’, ‘quite scary’ - and my understanding is that it was advertised in advance. (The Nettleham News, good as it is, isn’t the only means of communication!). The White Hart provided live entertainment and a barbecue and raised a significant sum for Netteham LIVES. As the article does clarify, the whole thing was over by about 10pm and no after effects.

The article to which I refer has no name to it, so I can only assume that it is Editor’s Comment.

Yes, there was congestion for a limited period and perhaps a little inconvenience to a very small number of people. But weigh this against the hundreds who had a good time and those who will benefit from the charitable donation.

No contest.

Congratulations to Bob and Deb at The White Hart – good on yer. Lets have more of the same.

I have lived in Nettleham with my family for over 20 years and enjoy reading Nettleham News every quarter. As yet I have never put pen to paper and written to the magazine, but I felt that I had to put over a few points regarding the article ‘A Summer Evening to Remember’.

There is no doubt that the event escalated to an unforeseen size, and it is acknowledged that both the police and Parish council were made aware of the event. What did initially exacerbate the parking situation was the council’s refusal to allow the parking space at the Old School to be used, although it was later opened by the police.

When terms like “mercifully unaware” are used I wonder whether the writer is aware of the age mix of the village. The terminology gives the impression that we are a village of retired old dodderers, which is far from the truth.

What I take most exception to is the last paragraph. The way I see it, the Editor is quite in order to make editorial comment, I do not feel however that it is the Editor’s place to be appearing to speak for the residents of Nettleham in this manner.

Having seen the benefit of this occasion to LIVES I think that the Parish Council should act in a positive way, just as it does with the Village Carnival. This intended annual event was not for the benefit of the White Hart, but for the village and LIVES, and this point should not be lost.

The village should encourage enterprise, especially of this nature.

The event was for a good cause and raised a good deal of money; the authorities were notified in advance, and as for buses being diverted around the village, how many buses do we get in Nettleham on an evening? Its hardly a mad metropolis!

Nettleham has thousands of residents of all ages and maybe if the event had been more widely advertised much more money would have been raised for a good cause.

Come on Nettleham, let’s enter the new milleniumm. I for one would be more than happy for it to be made an annual event, and well done the White Hart for shaking up the residents of Nettleham for a couple of hours on a summer’s evening.

On a gorgeous summer evening in August some friends, after a busy day, decided to meet at the White Hart with their wives for an early evening drink. We were surprised to see the ‘band lorry’ and BBQ stall already in place and a few odd bikes arriving.

We then were informed that it was a bikers Wednesday night rendezvous for the evening.

The place became busier, friendlier, extremely well behaved with the attending bikers and families being mainly between 30 - 50 years old.

There was a wonderful sight of dozens of bikes being parked in an orderly manner on show to the numerous people who wished to inspect. No tatty bangers here, all beautifully clean and elegant.

The band played, people were drinking, chatting and eating and money was raised for Lives.

By 9pm the bikers started to move on, the band stopped and by 10pm it could all have been a pleasant dream.

So this is why I write to Nettleham News, to express amazement and disappointment at the un-named article in the Autumn edition. Yes there was some difficulty in driving through the village on a normally quiet evening. Has anybody tried to get through this village in or out between 8.45 - 9.15 and 3.00 - 3.45 on school days or 10.30 - 12.30 on Sundays? Of course we all have, and I for one would rather have 500 bikers (not 2,000 as reported) once in a blue moon rather than the idiots who race around the village in the evening in beaten up old cars. Or the yobs who from time to time leave filth and litter in the church porch.

PS I congratulate the editor of the Nettleham News for producing each issue, a magnificent village magazine.

It was with interest that I read on page 64 of the autumn edition of the magazine of the Brown Cow’s victories in the Tug o’ War events over the Beck and the claim that “they were never beaten”.

The committee have asked me to write and thank you for the unstinting support that you have provided for the Gardeners’ Association with the regular and comprehensive articles in Nettleham News and your encouragement at the Summer Show. It really is very much appreciated.

On page 45 of the summer edition the photograph shows my father second from right.

His usual group was known as the ‘Big Six’.

The photograph probably include Les Byron and Bob Parker, but does anyone know the rest?

Err ... excuse me, but I know for a fact that one year in the 1970s they were beaten and it was the Black Horse team that did it. I should know, I was the ‘anchor man’ at the time! I can’t remember the exact year, but Jack Wragg was the landlord of the Black Horse then.

Interest was shown from public houses around the district about entering their teams and I believe this could have been a great annual event, with benefits going to various charities.

At the time though, with just the four local pubs, The White Hart were “a joke”, The Plough were “a warm-up” (though lately on Carnival Day they have had a very strong team - pity it’s now excluded). The only two teams that were in it were the Brown Cow and the Black Horse.

I would dare bet, given the team we had then, and having the services of a so-called “trainer” (something unheard of by the other teams, surprisingly), and winning the toss to get the best side of the Beck, (which the Brown Cow often did - hence their winning streak), the Black Horse team would have beaten everyone in sight, without even breaking into a sweat!

We had a very successful Show and as you saw when you were there, we had a steady stream of visitors throughout the afternoon and our takings on the door were £20 up!

The new classes for children’s exhibits and handicrafts were also very well received and this, we feel, is a pointer for the future. Needless to say, Cyril Needham marched off with his usual quota of trophies - he has now agreed to be our President.

“How many people am I going to speak to?” she asked. “Oh, about 50 or 60, maybe more” I replied.

“But I don’t have any slides, only photographs which I pass around and that won’t be any good for your lot!” protested Sally. We immediately agreed to sponsor the production of some slides.

The wheels were set in motion and Sally duly delivered her set of photographs to us, whereupon we contacted the RB Camera Club’s President, Peter Yeo, and asked “How do we

Nettleham Parish Council has had a public question time at the start of every meeting since I suggested it 40 years ago. Why don’t more people use it now, to find out what is happening and to make their suggestions?

Incidentally, next May 2006 sees the election of a new Parish Council to serve for 4 years. Will we see, unlike the last two regular elections, sufficient people standing to actually have an election? I hope to stand myself, so must not comment on the election, for which nominations usually close in early April.

I have asked the Parish Clerk to write about the process of standing for election to the Parish Council for your next edition and hope you will have room to publish it.

As Secretary of the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association, earlier this year, I asked Sally Dixon of the Bransby Home of Rest for Horses to make a presentation at our Annual General Meeting on 5 October 2005.

Page 25 brought back memories of gentle organ music wafting across the Green from behind the Plough on many a Sunday evening. I did visit the organ shed on one occasion, when George demonstrated the organ to me with all its voices.

We were dumbfounded to receive a complete set of 35mm slides, all properly mounted, just a few days later. Needless to say, Sally was overjoyed as we presented them to her at the Bransby Open Day. As a result, our AGM was a great success and our members asked me to give RB Camera Club a special vote of thanks for their kind assistance.

Editor’s Comment Firstly, I must apologise. As the Editor of a publication, albeit a modest village magazine in Lincolnshire, I should have chosen my words more carefully (although it must be said the article was written in haste - the deadline for the autumn edition had passed a week previously, it was due at the printers and if coverage of the event was to be included, it was necessary to move quickly!).

In the final paragraph, instead of saying that “the quiet village of Nettleham is most definitely not an appropriate venue for an event like this”, I should, of course, have said that “High Street, Nettleham, is most definitely not an appropriate venue for an event like this”.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with Nettleham per se being the venue for public events, but I do have a problem with High Street (particularly at its narrowest point) as the focus for such an event.

High Street is the main thoroughfare for the village and carries a considerable amount of traffic, both day and night (I know, I live there) and the free flow of traffic is all too easily hindered. One of the respondents quite correctly observes that parked vehicles, at certain times of the day, can make this section of road quite difficult and, at times, downright dangerous. So why choose to stage a large public event in such a sensitive area?

So what are the basic prerequisites for an event of this nature? Drinks, music and ample space for vehicles to park. So why hold it in the centre of a village - any village? There are places that, very sensibly, have been specifically created to enable groups of like-minded people to meet together.

Mulsanne Park is designed for such events, or, better still, the Lincolnshire Showground, where any number of people can meet, have a good time and make as much noise as they wish, without causing any problems for anyone at all - and it’s not a million miles away.

A number of the respondents dismiss the figure of 2,000 (bikers, not bikes) as a wild exaggeration.

The figure was the White Hart’s estimate, not mine.

Whatever the actual figure, the number of vehicles and people which crowded into this small area resulted in the police (who had only been informed of the event earlier the same day) closing the road as it subsequently developed into a safety issue.

Early in the evening, there was a single constable and a Community Support Officer, but these were later supplemented by additional officers who, with their cars, closed the road to through traffic.

A respondent claims that half a dozen police officers were on hand. I am unable to confirm this figure (for security reasons the police are unwilling to state the number of officers on duty at any one time), but in these days when we frequently hear how hard-pressed the police are, I would suggest that these officers could perhaps have been more usefully and productively employed elsewhere.

Comparisons have also been made with the Carnival and that roads are closed for this event.

Firstly, the Carnival is not a commercial event.

Once expenses have been covered (insurance, entertainment, etc) every penny which is raised on the day goes to the Village Hall, local charities and other good causes. It is quite true that the Green

and Church Street are closed during the afternoon of the Carnival, but special permission must be sought and granted from Lincolnshire County Council months before the event. Furthermore, a short alternative route is available for vehicles which may have otherwise passed through the area of the Green.

Secondly, the Carnival is organised as a community event, to appeal to a wide spectrum of ages and interests. It has been active for many years and judging from the crowds which come, continues to be a familiar and very popular annual village event.

It is also well publicised long before the event.

Another writer has observed that the Bike Night was advertised before the event. I am not certain what form this publicity took, but I have to say that I was unaware it was about to take place. It has also been observed that Nettleham News is not the sole means of advertising - quite true, but it is the only guaranteed way of getting information about forthcoming events into every household in the village and furthermore it’s FREE - you can’t get fairer than that. If it is anticipated that an event may cause some inconvenience to local residents, it would be courteous (and good business practice) to inform them beforehand. Those I have spoken to have said that they would not have minded so much if they had known beforehand what was going on, when and why.

The sudden influx of so many people into such a small area is bound to cause concern and I would suggest that if the bikers had arrived en masse unannounced in the immediate neighbourhood of some of the respondents, they too would have wondered what on earth was going on. (It is perhaps interesting to note that none of the respondents actually live on High Street).

Incidentally, the term “intimidated” referred not to the individual bikers (who, as I said, were a genial crowd) but simply to the overwhelming numbers present, which, if you don’t happen to be familiar with the good reputation of the crowded visitors, could understandably have caused some alarm.

I have also been criticised for using emotive words such as “distraught”. Believe me, there was a lady who, in her own house, was deeply distraught and very concerned about what was happening, whilst trying to get her children to bed that evening.

It has also been suggested that local residents were not inconvenienced - tell that to the family who, having just returned from holiday after a long and tiring car journey, were stopped on Washdyke Lane and informed that they could not drive through to their house. Having gone all the way round the alternative route, (back to the A46 and down Deepdale Lane), they again found the road closed at the other end of High Street and had to negotiate with a police officer to let them through.

Also perhaps, the people who, because the buses were diverted, may have been left waiting in vain for public transport to Lincoln, or arrived late at their destination. Yes, the numbers may be have been small, but does this mean they don’t matter?

It is not a little ironic that on that evening, should someone, say in Washdyke Lane or Kingsway, have suffered a heart attack, a LIVES Responder 27

setting out from the area of the Green and unaware of the situation on High Street (as another respondent observes - a person even such a short distance away would probably have been completely unaware of the event) would have been obliged to either take a long diversion, or elicit the assistance of the police in getting through the crowds on High Street, either of which could have lost valuable seconds, maybe minutes - time which LIVES frequently tell us may be vital to save a life.

I have also been criticisd for appearing to speak for the village - this was not intentional and I would not be so presumptuous as to assume that I was speaking for everyone in the village. The article was written from a personal perspective and living where I do, I was particularly well placed on this occasion to form an opinion. I have no “ominous agenda” as someone suggests, but I value our village highly and I question why some residents chose, and continue to choose, to live here, if Nettleham appears to be lacking in so many respects. Many people have said to me that they only came here for a couple of years (perhaps with their job) and yet they’re still here thirty or forty years later. Why do they stay? What is it about the village that makes them want to stay?

Could it be that we have got it about right? Or is this being complacent? I don’t think so. The letter from the young lady in Middlesex on page 19 is quite telling - yes, she does describe the village at one point as “sleepy” but what is so wrong with that? Peace, quiet and tranquility are increasingly rare commodities these days and once relinquished are not easily regained. What is so wrong in wanting to enjoy the simple pleasure of the quiet and peaceful surroundings of your own village on a summer’s evening? If you desire lively crowds, loud music, lots of noise and action, etc, they are but a short bus or car ride away in the city.

People who I have spoken to thought the article in the autumn edition of the magazine was “balanced” and gave a fair picture of the event. The fact that the White Hart had raised over £770 for LIVES was acknowledged and it is indeed a magnificent sum of money to raise in a single evening (previous fundraising activities for LIVES by the White Hart have also been published in Nettleham News in the past). I am always pleased to report on any fundraising activities in Nettleham, including the many individuals in the village who work tirelessly for charity, quietly raising modest sums of money for many deserving causes, year in, year out, and who receive very little acknowledgment for all their efforts.

Nettleham Gardeners Association Annual Show Results

F

ollowing the retirement of Chris and Ray from organising the Annual Show, as no one else came forward, I decided to form a small committee to run things and so keep the Show going. We just couldn’t let it fall by the wayside after 54 years! I would like to thank them both for their invaluable assistance in the preparation for the show.

The new committee decided to make a few significant changes and additions to the schedule, limiting the entries to one exhibit per person per class (with just seven exceptions).

In this first year, there was a slightly reduced number of entries, but an increase in the number of exhibitors. For the first time there was a new Handicraft Group, including painting, photography and crafts which attracted 27 entries and was very popular.

We had also changed our Show day to the second Saturday in September, to encourage children who would be back at school. As a result, we had more junior entries and many more children coming to see the show. In spite of the awful weather on the day, a much greater number of people came to view. (Perhaps because of the weather - they did come!).

1st NETTLEHAM 4TH LINCOLN SCOUT GROUP A few changes have happened since we returned in September.

First, Peter Rowlett has now stepped down from Group Scout Leader to be replaced by myself, Trudy Connor.

I would like to thank Pete for all his support and time to the scout group in his role as Group Scout Leader.

However, you can’t keep a good man down and Pete is still very much a part of the group, continuing as Explorer Leader and general team player!

We have also taken on some new leaders and would like to welcome, Mark Lawrence as Akela for Ospreys Cubs (Thursday), Sarah Cheng as Assistant Beaver Leader (Wednesday Beavers) and Kay Chambers as Assistant Scout Leader. We also have a new Young Leader with Tuesday Beavers – Anna Hagens. Many thanks to Lorraine Whatling, who has left the group, for all her hard work.

All our units, from Beavers through to Scouts, are full and have waiting lists for places – scouting is still very active and gives a lot of pleasure to lots of children and adults!

We recently took the scouts and older cubs on a walking/activity weekend in Derbyshire. On the Saturday we hiked through Dovedale and back to Ilam in pouring rain! We visited the Matlock illuminations in the evening and spent the night at Ilam Hall Youth Hostel. On Sunday we cycled on the Tissington Trail and went swimming at Matlock in the afternoon. Everyone had a great time and I am sure many of us had aching limbs the next day – I did!

As with all voluntary groups, we are constantly looking for new money raising events. Thank you to everyone who supported our Breakfast on the Green, we will try to organise another one in the springtime.

WI 90th Birthday Cel he 90th birthday of an old friend to the village was celebrated in style in August of this year with a barbecue, held at the village hall.

T

The hall, suitably bedecked in balloons and banners, was the setting for the party and a splendid birthday cake completed the scene. Friends, old and new, gathered and the celebrations commenced.

So who is this nonagenarian pillar of village life you ask yourselves? None other than the Women’s Institute. Yes, the WI has now existed in the UK for 90 years.

What an achievement!

The idea started in 1901 in Canada as an organisation giving a voice to the many women involved in farming. When one of the original ladies, Madge Watt, moved to the UK from British Columbia, she brought the idea with her and the first WI branch was set up in Wales on 16 September 1915.

The first branches in England started in November of that year. Many more soon sprang up so, when it became obvious that the WI movement was going to flourish, a National Federation of WI’s was formed, only two years later, in 1917.

Nettleham Women’s Institute was started in 1949 and has played a part in Nettleham’s village-life since. Most recently you will have seen them in action at the Carnival providing their delicious home-made cakes and refreshments for the hungry and thirsty revellers. Stationed in their regular spot (outside the Co-op), they are one of the corner-stones of the annual festivities on The Green. Who could survive all that fun without a little refreshment?

The regular monthly meetings in the Village Hall provide an opportunity to meet and chat, and there is always a speaker to entertain and inform. The topics are varied and wide ranging, so there is something of interest for everyone. Competitions give the chance to show off creativity and ingenuity and the raffle is both fun and fund-raising.

Outings, to various places and events throughout the year offer opportunities for getting to know everyone, and both the scrabble and darts teams have been very active in recent years - successful too !

Perhaps one of the lesser known facts is that the WI has its own Adult Education College, near Oxford, named after the first

Chairman of the National Federation - Lady Denman. It is open to all, members and non-members alike, as are all the local meetings. In today’s world of slogans and sound-bites ‘All are welcome’ must be that of the WI. Thought of by many as an exclusive, jam-making, cake-baking club, it is much more - so very much more !

Courses on offer this year at Denman College included William Morris (the Arts & Crafts movement); Bridget Jones Diary (a dance weekend); Can you hear me at the back (on public speaking) and Making Miniature Bears. Surely something of interest for everyone ?

Why not check it out on the WI Website www.womens-institute.co.uk/college The Women’s Institute is now - ninety years on - still a voice for women in the UK. Women of all interests - women of all ages. Current campaign issues include: ‘Children’s Diets, Exercise and Health’; ‘Supermarkets: Codes of Conduct’; ‘Genetically Modified Food and Crops’ issues which affect us all and are so relevant today.

The power of the voice of women from the WI was prominently demonstrated only a few years ago, when Tony Blair received the famous slow-hand clap from the country-wide representatives when he 34

addressed the National Conference. He soon realised there was more to the WI than jam and cake making!

Nettleham is part of the Louth (WI House) based, Lincolnshire-North section of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes which links it to WI’s all over the country.

Some ladies in our region have been loyal members of the NFWI for over 50 years!

Now, you don’t stay a member of anything for that long if you are not having fun - do you?

Members are always welcome as guests at other WI’s - but there could be a bit of a rush in the coming season for the Wythit WI in North Yorkshire. In addition to their recent programme, which included Belly Dancing, they have now decided on Pole Dancing lessons over Pilates, putting them at the very forefront of Keep-Fit innovation. Future outings are reported to also include a visit to the Glastonbury Festival. (It should be noted that Nettleham has yet to finalise plans for the 2006/2007 season - ladies - watch this space!).

So, the ninetieth anniversary of the start of Women’s Institutes in the UK was duly celebrated here in Nettleham. The village hall (scene of many a local celebration and event) was not disappointed on this occasion. The ladies of the WI know how

lebrated in Nettleham to party when called upon for such a good reason. With the weather on their side the barbecue was a great success. Committee members contributed a very tasty selection of desserts, for which all were most appreciative, clearly demonstrated in the time-honoured tradition of ‘clean plates all round’. This delicious array (all caloriefree, of course!) was crowned by a splendid celebration cake, kindly made by Maureen Pilcher and decorated by Ruth Lanes. As the longest-standing member in Nettleham, Muriel Green took great pride in cutting the cake.

In true WI style, the members heartily thanked the kindness of all those whose efforts had made the evening a great success - and then enthusiastically participated in the great pleasure of sharing the event with good friends at the Nettleham Women’s Institute.

So, three Cheers for the WI - and here’s to the next 90 years!

Village Hall Update Grant applications were submitted to the Lottery Community Fund, Lincolnshire County Council, West Lindsey District Council and WREN (Waste Recycling Enviromnental Limited).

We have qualified and are through to the second round of the WREN scheme, but have been advised to re-apply to the other sources for next year’s allocation of grants.

Whatever the outcome, after years of fund raising and a generous donation, assets have been accumulated which should enable us to provide vital facilities for the disabled.

Funds raised by the Village Carnival continue to be an important source of income and I would like to once again

On a more sombre note, the Village Hall still does not have a Secretary. Despite many appeals nobody has come forward to fill this position and before February 2006 must find a new treasurer as well.

If we are unable to fill both these posts and attract new active members, the future administration of the hall is extremely uncertain. Two to three hours a week is the average time commitment, and I would ask anyone who can spare this time to seriously consider coming forward. Thank you.

On others, it refers to those that fell in the Great War 1914 - 1918, while on Nettleham’s it says “Their duty well done 1914 - 1919”.

Nettleham Heritage Association Following the very successful Open Day which was held at the beginning of the year, a second Open Day will take place at All Saints Church on Saturday 14 January 2006, from 10.00am 4.00pm (see Nettleham Noticeboard page 3).

n Monday 19 September 2005, the Nettleham Heritage Association carried out its very first fieldwalk.

Although it was a cold and overcast day, the members of the Association who came along were naturally enthusiastic and full of eager anticipation.

Anyone who has any items of interest about the history of Nettleham and perhaps missed the first Open Day will have the opportunity to come and bring their treasures for identification and discussion with some of the experts who will be there on the day.

The field (situated adjacent to Greetwell Lane on the left as you leave the village) was selected and the area identified as likely to yield the greatest number of finds, lies immediately behind the Bishops Palace site.

We had waited quite a long time to be able to do the walk as it was dependent on the status of the crop and the permission of the farmer to go onto the land. However, this year’s crop of oilseed rape had now been harvested, the land ploughed, and awaiting harrowing and seed drilling for the next year’s crop, so the time was right!

The area was marked out with poles into a grid of squares, and each member walked a strip of these squares, picking up any items and noting in which square the find had been made.

All the items which were found on the fieldwalk will be labelled and on display and it is also hoped that John Blakely’s magnificent scale model of the Bishops Palace site as it might have been in medieval times will again be on display on the day, and perhaps a few days after.

(If you didn’t get the chance to see this model the first time around, make sure you don’t miss this second opportunity - it’s size and detail is breathtaking!).

Do come along, have a cup of tea or coffee, see lots of interesting displays amd perhaps meet a few friends too!

Athough nothing of any great significance was found, there were considerable quantities of ceramic and tile sherds dating from a wide range of historical periods. Two items of particular interest did come to light though, one was a fragment of a spur (see top photograph at right) and the other a small prehistoric flint scraper.

It is anticipated that further fieldwalks will take place in the coming months and if you would like to participate, why not become a member of the Association and be involved in this and other interesting activities?

On page 9 you will have read about the display cabinet purchased by the Parish Council for the Old School, from a generous bequest for the benefit of the Paris, from the estate of the late Mr Arthur Bird, a former resident.

This beautiful cabinet, with its illuminated glass shelves, has now been installed and will be used to display a wide range of different artefacts relating to the history of our village, which people have loaned on a temporary or permanent basis for the purpose. The secure cupboards below will be used to house additional archive material in the form of documents, files, photographs, etc.

Nettleham Library News ONLINE STOCK CATALOGUE Did you know that you can search for books and other items, as well as reserve and renew items yourself online? Lincolnshire Library Service’s catalogue of stock can be accessed on the Internet by going to: www. lincolnshire.gov.uk and following the links. This is a service that we are increasingly being asked about, so some introductory information is given below.

You do not need to be a member of the library to consult the catalogue, but if you have joined, your library card can be used, together with your PIN, to reserve and renew items. You can reserve up to 25 items and you may renew items twice, provided they have not been reserved by another reader. Please note that some items cannot be reserved - these will be clearly identified on screen.

The main advantages are that you can use this service any time of day or night in the comfort of your own home, and that the reservation fee per item is only 15p, compared to the 25p charged if you ask staff to reserve an item in the library.

If you do not already have your PIN please visit us. For security reasons we can only hand out PINs to you in person, and you must bring your library card as well.

Using your Library card and PIN, you can also check details of your borrower record, the items that you have on loan and the amount you may have outstanding in fines, reservation charges or any other relevant charges.

The system is very easy to use, but we do have leaflets available in the library should you wish to pop in and pick one up.

DVDs AND VIDEOS Now that the nights have started to draw in, can we remind you that Nettleham library stocks a good range of films on DVD and video to help pass those long winter hours. The popularity of our DVDs has steadily grown since we first started to stock them a year ago and we now hold

approximately 150 titles. Additional new films are received each month to give you a growing choice. We are pleased to hear that we filling a vital gap in the community through the many comments we have received about how valuable a service this is, considering that there is no real alternative outlet for hiring films within the village. Hire charges remain at £1.50 for two nights, and £2.00 for one week, and we are hoping to be able to run special offers at some point in the future.

DISPLAYS We have created additional book display areas within the library - just look out for the green backing behind shelving. The New Books section can now be found alongside the issue desk, and next to that is our main display area with displays that change on a monthly basis. We have also added a small table in the centre of the library which houses quick-changing displays, so if you only visit us occasionally, you might miss out! If you would like to see a display on a particular theme, please let us know at the counter.

We have also created a noticeboard above the People’s Network computers so that we can bring library news, notices, information and promotions to your attention.

BOOKS FOR SALE We have removed the permanent sale trolley as it is being replaced by bigger quarterly sales. The first such sale will be throughout January, so if you want to bag a book bargain, pop in to see what we have on offer.

November News for 0 – 16 year olds Dark and rainy days make Nettleham library a warm bright place to be for everyone in November – the resident cat seems to agree! Our staff are always willing to help you get the most out of the library service whether its information, videos, a bit of internet help, or a new book to escape into.

Christmas is on its way, so look out for Santa’s library postbox, and pick up and fill in a letter to him asking for your Christmas and New Year reading. Letters must be in

by Monday December 12. Please remember to include the title, author, your name and card number (library staff are always willing to help fill in letters). This bit of fun is open to all who are young at heart (reservations are free for under 16s, 25p for those 16 and over.)

It was great to see so many parents and children at the summer activities and storytime in September. We would love to relaunch Storytime or a Rhymetime/Baby Bounce in early 2006 and so we are issuing a survey in November to find out what you would like for your children. Please fill in a copy and hand it in.

If you have a new baby, or child under four, please ask staff about Bookstart - you may be eligible for a free Bookstart Baby or Bookstart Plus pack! You can get these from your health visitor or from library staff. There is an information file for parents and carers in the Junior area.

If your child is not a member of the library, please enrol them and open up a world of enjoyment and information to them. There’s lots of research to show that where families are members of their local library, their children do better at school, and are happier too. Remember it’s free to join the library, and free to reserve books on a junior ticket. You do not have to have a ticket yourself, but why not join if not a member already – it’s free to join for you, too.

All 0 - 4 year olds would love to join Bookstart Bookcrawl - a free scheme where they are rewarded with stickers and beautiful certificates for their visits to the library.

Hello to all our junior readers! We have just brightened up the signs in the Junior area and provided a bit more information for you about what we have to offer, like First Facts - exciting information books for young children, and talking books ,which are great for dark bedtimes and long journeys. There’s a display of books full of magic and mystery - try one and get lost in your imagination!

Look out for our Christmas stocking display in mid November and see if you can answer some of the quiz questions, or try some of the books suggested.

Teen juniors have their own shelves now, too. You will soon have the opportunity to try out books in the cool new Spies R Us collection.

Please make sure that you stock up with your festive reading and films before Christmas as we, along with all other Lincolnshire libraries, will be closed from 24th December to 2nd January, re-opening on 3rd January.

Teen adult readers should check out their own new shelves at the beginning of adult fiction and the display space for reviews and information. If you have information about local events, or can provide information useful to 14 - 16 year olds, then please hand it in at the counter and we will display where possible.

LINK ROMANIA FAMILY SHOEBOX APPEAL 2005 Thank you all so much for your support of the Shoebox Appeal for 2005. This really has been a fantastic year as, once again, you have all been so very generous.

At the time of writing, 226 shoe boxes are now ready to make their way to Romania as well as boxes of cuddly toys, stationery, hats, scarves, jumpers, cardigans and blankets. Many more of you felt able to sign the Gift Aid form this year and this will mean increased funds to support all the projects.

The response to John’s appeal for hats was wonderful again this year - most boxes contained a hat and there are more which can be handed out to the children. How much joy they will bring to Romanian families at Christmas time and indeed for many months to come.

Once again, support for the appeal has come from far and wide - ie Nottingham, Doncaster, Swansea, Scunthorpe, London, Leeds, Lincoln and all the villages around us. Tanya Knitwear of Fiskerton sent us a most generous quantity of long-sleeved jumpers, which will keep folk cosy through the bitter winter months.

NETTLEHAM CARES 2005 Thank you so much to everyone who joined in Nettleham Cares on Saturday 15 October and made the day so memorable.

I did appreciate all the help I was given in setting up the tables before the event and it was so good to have fourteen charities participating. On their behalf, I thank all of you for your support.

Once again the music, which we all enjoyed, was provided by Chevrette, who have offered to play for a longer time next year. That will be good.

Thank you ladies for providing delicious refreshments once again.

Whether as stall holders or customers, we did appreciate the goodies you provided and I know you will have slept well that night!

The Art Competition disappointingly did not attract many entries this year, but it was interesting to see how the subject “Parties” had been interpreted by those who entered.

Freddie and Sam Rushton shared the Children’s prize, whilst Mrs Joyce Snowdon was the winner in the 21 101 age group.

Many congratulations to you all.

It was great this year that the Village Hall had been booked for a wedding reception following Nettleham Cares, meaning that it was not necessary to put the tables away. What bliss! My thanks to all those who helped me leave the hall ship-shape and indeed for all the help I was given before the day.

Results of Needs Assessment Survey Earlier this year, LifeSpring, a part of Threshold Church, Nettleham, conducted a Needs Assessment survey via Nettleham News.

The residents of the village were asked to consider the needs that they and their families might have and to complete the form appropriately. We would like to thank those of you who took the time to enter into this survey and for the comprehensive replies.

Although the return was low, some issues were prominent and we are looking at these and formulating ways to move forward to help alleviate some of these needs.

When looking at the results we banded the age groups 21-40, 41-65 and 66+. Most of the concerns identified came from the first age band.

The main concerns identified from the whole survey were: ■ Worries about the future ■ Concerns about health ■ Concerns about money ■ Concerns about children The ‘dream list’ produced some other areas of need - the main one being provision of activities for the youth of the village. There were also requests for gardening and handyman help.

While many of the comments about the village were favourable, some concerns were expressed about litter and the feeling that recent building has now made Nettleham a sufficient size.

Again, a big thank you for helping with this survey.

Threshold Celebrates hreshold is a Church that began in Nettleham in the autumn of 1995 and we have just celebrated our first ten years with a weekend of memories: photographs, stories, video clips … and food.

T

January 2006 will see the 10 year anniversary of Threshold starting to meet for regular worship in the village.

We began meeting in Nettleham Infant School and have since used the Junior School, the Village Hall, Riseholme College and other venues.

We now meet every other week at William Farr School (11.00 am) and on alternate Sundays in smaller groups in local villages – including Nettleham (in the Village Hall).

Why another Church?

Nettleham is fortunate to be a village with thriving Church communities, but a quick survey of the Lincolnshire rural scene will mostly show a picture of Churches in decline, with smaller,

older congregations, parishes being merged and buildings sold, etc.

Threshold started with a vision to see Church re-established throughout Lincolnshire, particularly in the rural areas.

Since those early days, we have established groups in Welton, Dunholme/Wragby, Hemingby, Nocton and the not-so-rural Monks Road area of Lincoln (unless the Arboretum counts!). From small beginnings, the Church has grown to two hundred or so people, mostly from local villages.

Working Together In all the communities in which we are established, you will find us working closely with the other Churches.

In Nettleham the three local churches, All Saints, the Methodist Church and Threshold all meet together once or twice a year for worship. We organise Carols on the Green together and plan various other joint events throughout the year. The leaders of the three

Churches meet together regularly for prayer and planning. We are keen to support village activities and anything that helps to build community.

Threshold is part of a Lincolnshirebased network of new Churches called Ground Level. There are 20 or so Ground Level Churches in Lincolnshire and many more in other parts of the UK. Ground Level organises Grapevine, a five-day Christian festival which takes place annually on the Lincolnshire Showground over the August bank holiday weekend. Last year saw 11,000 people attracted to the event.

Grapevine 2006 will be our 25th Anniversary.

On a wider front, leaders from Threshold are working with the leaders of the main denominations in the county to encourage the creation of new congregations and “expressions” of Church – often as part of existing churches - to serve communities and people where traditional Church alone cannot be effective.

its 10 Year Anniversary Youth and Young People Our aim is to serve the communities in which we work in a variety of ways.

We are particularly keen to work with youth and young people and we employ a youth worker to help us with this (Lisa Gibson).

We run small groups, social events, band nights, outdoor activities, weekends away, etc, for the 11 to 18 age group as part of our youth “arm” called Emerge.

Ground Level recently organised some teams of youth to help with planting bulbs and painting benches in the village as part of the Synergy Plus event at Grapevine (you may remember the report which appeared in a past edition of Nettleham News village magazine).

We have a very active children’s “department” which provides fun, teaching and involvement for children on Sundays, and works with the other Churches in the village to run Holiday clubs, Light Parties, Parade Services, etc.

Approximately 40% of Threshold are student age or younger.

Activities Most of us meet midweek in small groups, as well as on Sundays. We also have a wide range of interests and activities in the Church including a team called Impact focussing on creative arts (visual arts, drama, music [worship and different bands], poetry, etc).

There is also a group concerned to support business people, and some folk who are particularly interested in missionary activity overseas (we have a full-time missionary in Africa).

We also run the Alpha course for both adults and youth.

Threshold in Nettleham is led by Pete and Kath Atkins, Eddie and Maggie Sewell, Mike and Linda Yoxon and Ian Kidger.

Contact At present, we meet for worship in Nettleham Village Hall on alternate Sunday mornings (starting at 10.30am for coffee and doughnuts and finishing around 12.00pm), and on the same Sunday afternoons (starting at 4.00pm and finishing around 5.00pm with refreshments).

The Nettleham Earlyworms

I

n 1999 the “Earlyworms” Reading Group was formed under an initiative by Lincolnshire Libraries, its name springing from the fact that we decided to hold our meetings in the morning.

We meet in each of our homes in turn, usually towards the end of a month, during which we each read the same book title, chosen by the group for discussion and provided through Nettleham Library.

There have been a few changes in membership as people have moved away from the area and been replaced by others, but we have always gelled very well as a group and enjoy each other’s company. (The coffee, tea and biscuits we take it in turn to provide has probably helped!)

We have now widened our scope by visiting parts of the country famous for a specific writer, or writers, and our experiences there have given us a fuller understanding of their works. It is perhaps a little surprising that we didn’t do this sort of thing earlier, as the forerunner of such a visit occurred as early as the reading of our first book. This was “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt and quite by chance the film of the book was on in Lincoln shortly afterwards. A number of us thought it would be

interesting to see the film together and compare the book with the film, which we did.

Last year we visited Haworth after reading some of the Bronte sisters’ books. Travelling in two cars, away we went to Yorkshire for the day to see the background against which their novels were set and to absorb some of the local atmosphere. We visited the Parsonage Museum and the church and walked in the village.

Despite the odd sharp shower and the coolish weather, we had a wonderful day, taking our time and sharing our thoughts and sentiments.

Later we visited Brantwood, home to the multi-talented John Ruskin for twenty-eight years. The house is a delight and was much added to by Ruskin himself in his time there.

The journey back to Newton Rigg through low cloud and drizzle and on narrow twisting roads where sheep wandered did curtail discussion somewhat, as from time to time we travelled with hearts in mouths!

In June of this year, we embarked on a more ambitious group outing. We decided to visit Wordsworth’s locality in the Lake District for a day or two and discovered ideal accommodation at the Newton Rigg campus of the University of Central Lancashire near Penrith. Breakfast offered an extremely good choice of hot and cold dishes and the pub in the next village served more than adequate evening meals.

The afternoon we arrived, we visited Wordsworth’s Old Grammar School at Hawkshead and duly found his name carved on his desk at the end of his time there. The next morning we went to see Wordsworth’s homes at Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage, both at the northern tip of Lake Windermere. It was raining heavily, but it didn’t spoil our experience of the

The trip went like clockwork. We all enjoyed it and on the way home the groups in both cars were already earnestly discussing where we should go next time.

We have each found that by reading and discussing books chosen by other members, you can come to enjoy and appreciate literature which you weren’t interested in before. Further, visiting the places from which writers have drawn inspiration helps to develop more insight into their thoughts, emotions and experiences.

Their works almost literally “come alive”.

The Nettleham Library staff have given us wonderful support over the years and we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our indebtedness and to thank them.

The snow’s surface is inviolate, Showing no imperfections.

A neighbouring field is quilted seamlessly, But mounds of snow, Driven by the breeze, Drift towards a frozen hedgerow.

As I venture out into the white wilderness,

People pass me on silent feet, Treading the thick carpet of snow To create an unreal world.

Virgin-white snowflakes begin to fall anew, Whirling and dancing in a ballet Choreographed by Nature Lost in admiration, I almost miss The cobwebs glistening on bushes, Decorating them in modest tinsel But I notice that the frost on the patio Shimmers like diamond dust,

Age Concern Lindsey Although, as Christians, we are taught to ‘love our neighbours as ourselves’ this can be very difficult if our neighbours are noisy, or cause us great unhappiness with their behaviour.

There is now an updated Factsheet (Number 9) brought out by Age Concern to help older people deal with this problem. There are many types of nuisance, for example: Loud noise from neighbours.

Caring for Life A social care team desperately need more volunteers to help relieve the loneliness and isolation of older people.

The Lincolnshire St John Ambulance runs a project called Engage, which supports older people who may be either rurally or socially isolated from their community.

Its team of volunteers offer social support, which is often delivered just by chatting and listening to service users. At the moment around eighty older people are benefiting from the scheme, but several are waiting and this number will increase dramatically if more volunteers cannot be recruited.

We are seeking people who are caring, trustworthy, reliable and who could spare a couple of hours a week, or even a fortnight.

It really benefits other people and all the volunteers get a lot of satisfaction from it.

One of the most frequent comments by our service users is “no one has time to talk to me” and “everyone is always in a rush”.

Our volunteers make time to listen and this makes a big difference. Volunteers will take part in an induction and be offered extra training when it becomes available.

Out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

Harassment, such as verbal abuse or threats.

An overgrown garden or encroachment of roots, which is interfering with you enjoyment of your home.

If you experience a problem of nuisance, keep an up to date record of events, recording the day, date, time and nature of the incident causing you distress. This will help you to get some perspective about how often the nuisance happens (you may find it’s not as often as you perhaps imagine).

It will also help the local authority, police and courts to see an established pattern of the nuisance that has occurred over a period of time, should you feel the need to take formal action later.

The informal approach is always advised first.

Try to speak to your neighbours and explain what the problem is - they may be unaware that the noise they are causing, or their behaviour, is disturbing you.

If other neighbours are having the same problem, you could make a joint approach.

You may be able to organise a letter signed by the group of people who are affected.

If you are a council or housing association tenant, you could also raise this issue at the residents’ group meeting.

Also, if you are a council or housing association tenant, your housing officer can arrange a meeting and act as an arbitrator to help resolve the problem.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY SCHOOL This Autumn Term has seen a pleasing number of new faces at All Saints Sunday School. Some ten new children have joined the Starfish (under 8s) and Pandas (over 8s). Ian and Paul have become leaders with Michelle, Gill, Sally and Stephen. Most of the children are at infant and junior school, but we do have some secondary school pupils as well.

The children decided on the names for their groups on the first week of the term. They also devised their own rules for Sunday School and looked at the importance of rules in daily life.

They found that playing games without rules was not much fun and that fairness and thinking about each other was vital.

Other activities have been preparing for Harvest, when some adult members of Church came over to see what the children were doing and helped them make Harvest pictures for the All Age Worship Service the following week. The children have made chocolate crisp cookies to share with the congregation, played a version of ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’ (based on the Bible), done craft activities, played games and participated in drama.

Sunday School follows ‘Roots Children and Young People’, a resource programme for churches, specifically for school-age children.

An event to look forward to is ‘A Christmas Journey…’ on the morning of Friday 23 December (see page 41). This is for primary school children, aged 5-11, in All Saints Church between 9.00am and 1.00pm. A number of activities are planned for the children, including Christmas crafts, making a nativity, drama and music, decorating biscuits, refreshments and much more. We hope to welcome a large number of children to Church. The last half hour will be a short service, in which parents can share in what the children have been doing and the Blessing of the Crib will take place.

A Nettleham Resident Kelvin Arthur Bray CBE,

S

eptember 2005 was a memorable month in the truly remarkable life of Kelvin Bray, resident of Cherry Tree Lane in Nettleham.

On Monday 12 September, Kelvin was granted the Honorary Freedom of the City of Lincoln at the Guildhall in the presence of members of Lincoln City Council, at a meeting specially convened for the purpose, and the following day, at a ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Lincoln - honours in recognition of his outstanding contribution to both economic and educational development in the city.

Born in Leicester in 1935, Kelvin came to Lincoln in 1956, having graduated from King’s College, Cambridge. In 1959 he married Grace Elizabeth (Beth) Tannahill, daughter of a well known and respected Lincoln doctor and they went on to have two sons, Adam and Julian.

At the beginning of his illustrious and distinguished industrial engineering career, Kelvin joined Ruston & Hornsby Limited as a postgraduate apprentice in 1956, gaining a further qualification in Nuclear Engineering from Manchester University in 1958.

Originally a Design Engineer, he quickly progressed to Senior Project Manager. In 1956 he became Sales Manager and later General Manager for Gas Turbines, eventually becoming Managing Director of the newly-formed Ruston Gas Turbines Ltd. With colleagues, he developed RGT from a £500,000 concern to a £145 million giant by 1987. He made RGT part of European Gas Turbines, sales then going even higher, to £800 million. GEC ALSTHOM Power Generation was then formed in Paris with Kelvin as Chief Executive, employing 21,000 people in Europe and around the world and sales going up to £3 billion at the turn of the millennium.

Known in Lincoln as Siemens today, the company is now an influential world leader in gas turbine technology and the city’s largest industrial employer, exporting its products to over 100 countries worldwide, for which it has gained 12 Queen’s Awards for Exports, Technology and the Environment.

Kelvin served as the first Chairman of the Board of the University of Lincoln in 2001, becoming Pro Vice-Chancellor in 2002 and visiting Professor for the University’s Business School in 2005.

Esso Medal in 1974, The MacRobert Medal in 1983, the Freedom of the City of London in 1984, the Institution of Gas Engineers Gold Medal in 1994 and the Lincoln Civic Award in 1995.

Over the years, Kelvin has also played an active and inspirational part in the educational life of Lincoln. He served as a Governor of both Yarborough School and Bishop Grosseteste College for many years before joining the Board of Governors at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in 1996. His vision, drive, enthusiasm and commitment played a

With such a distinguished industrial career and an equally illustrious contribution to education, it is not difficult to understand why the Council of the City of Lincoln considered it appropriate to award Kelvin the most honourable distinction which is their privilege to bestow - the Honorary Freedom of the City of Lincoln.

This rare distinction has only been conferred on 23 previous occasions in the past 114 years with, most appropriately, the first name being Joseph Ruston in 1891.

(The title should not be confused with becoming a Freeman of the City - a title bestowed by the Freemen’s Gild of Lincoln and a far more frequent occurrence).

Naturally, Kelvin is delighted and honoured to be the recipient of this most prestigious

award and said “It’s greatly appreciated when the work you’ve done and care about is recognised. For many years I promoted products made in the city and in doing that you do promote the city itself and I associate Lincoln very much with the best parts of my life”.

Now, at the age of 70, Kelvin is looking forward to his retirement years, when he hopes to be able to spend more time with his family, especially his five grandchildren.

“Over the years, my business career has taken me all over the world, resulting in periods away from home and family life.

I must thank my wife Beth, our two sons Adam and Julian and our wider family, for their invaluable support and understanding”.

Readers may be interested to know that the Editor of Nettleham News magazine has been responsible for a number of years for creating the commemorative scrolls which are presented to the recipients of the Honorary Freedom of the City of Lincoln.

In addition to creating the scroll, the ceremony is officially recorded in a large leather-bound Roll of Honorary Freemen which is carefully preserved at City Hall in Lincoln.

This historic book, bound in dark green leather with decorative gold tooling, comprises blank pages of heavy hand-made paper and each award takes three pages of the book, with the recipient’s personal signature on the final third page bearing the Oath of Allegiance and Loyalty to the current reigning monarch.

The first entry in the book, dated 1891, records the ceremony at which the Honorary Freedom of the City of Lincoln was conferred upon Joseph Ruston. The oath, signed by him, is sworn to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, then the reigning monarch of this country.

As you can perhaps imagine, both the scroll and the book entries demand an extremely high level of concentration and when deeply engrossed in carefully writing each individual calligraphic letter of every word, it would be all too easy to make a spelling or grammatical error.

With the scroll, this could possibly be done again, although perhaps forfeiting many hours of work in the process, depending on how far you had progressed with the task.

With the book, however, there is no second chance and it is always necessary to check, double-check and then check again before putting pen to paper and painstakingly writing each letter in turn.

Looking back at the early pages of the book, which contain the most beautiful calligraphy dating from the late nineteenth century, the sense of history and burden of responsibility can weigh quite heavily!

News from Nettleham Pre-School of childcare that our staff provide for the children within the Pre-School and from the satisfaction of those parents who send their children to us.

It has been a busy term for all of us here at Pre-School, with some of our older children leaving to go off to Infant school and a number of new faces joining our numbers.

We wish all the children who have left us all the best as they start their new journey at school. Our new children have settled well and are now enjoying all the various activities we have planned for the Christmas period.

Our committee has expanded, welcoming some new members and is busy planning various fundraising activities for the coming year. Our focus for next year is the incredible fact that Nettleham Pre-School will be celebrating our 40th year! This marvellous achievement can only be credited to the high standards and quality

To celebrate our 40th Anniversary we are looking for anyone who has any memories, stories and pictures of days gone by at Pre-School to come forward so that we can explore the history of how our Pre-School has developed. There must be many proud mothers, fathers and relatives throughout the years 1966 - 2006 who can provide a history through the years via Nativity pictures and other events captured at Pre-School. Sri Lanka Bound Ex-Nettleham Girl - Rachel Biggs (now Kenward), Principal Pharmacist at Lincoln County Hospital and Nigel, her husband, have left for Sri Lanka for a period of two years’ voluntary service.

They are going to help in rebuilding communities affected by the tsunami disaster of 2004 and will be based in the capital, Colombo.

Nigel, who was the practice manager at Caythorpe & Ancaster Doctors’ surgery, will become the chief executive of the Community Restoration and Upliftment Foundation Charity, (www.cruf.org) which is helping to rebuild Tangalle, a small fishing community where they will be providing permanent housing for Tsunami victims. The charity was formed by two brothers from Sri Lanka, Messers Shiran and Modestus Karunaratne who own a fair trade business (Gospel House Handicrafts) and who have already helped many of the fishermen of the area rebuild and repair their boats.

The brothers already knew Nigel and asked him to work for the charity. His role will be to build up charitable governance structures and policies, so that donors will be able to see exactly where their money goes. In addition, he will be applying to Western charities for funding, and working to start income generation projects within the communities to help the regeneration of the area.

Nigel and Rachel’s posts are sponsored by an American organization called the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

MCC is the charitable arm of the Mennonite Church. Mennonites are like Quakers and have a specific focus on peacemaking, and support for the developing world. MCC will be providing Rachel and Nigel with accommodation, food, health insurance, transport and a very small monthly allowance.

Members of Charles Street Methodist Church, Newark, Rachel and Nigel had visited Sri Lanka on holiday, only leaving for home 10 days before the Tsunami struck, and this made them even more

determined to help affected communities.

The news broadcasts were particularly harassing to watch, because they showed some of the hotels they had stayed in that were flattened and staff killed. They realized that their skills were not useful in the initial relief initiative, but would be in the ongoing development work.

Rachel is in discussion with Colombo Medical School and she hopes to get involved in the establishment of a countrywide Medicines Information Service in Sri Lanka. Rachel has experience of working in the Far East as a visiting lecturer at Surabaya University in Indonesia, where she was instrumental in setting up a teaching course in the School of Pharmacy, sponsored by the British Council.

A Record Year for Ne he past season has been a very successful one for the folk up at Nettleham Cricket Club, with three out of the four senior sides gaining promotion.

On Saturdays, the 1st XI finished top of the Lincolnshire County Premier League.

Promotion from this league sees the team progress to the Lincolnshire ECB Premier Division. These are exciting times, since the club has never played at such a standard in its history!

The first XI were also involved in the final of the George Marshall Cup, which was played at Grimsby Town CC against South Kelsey. On this occasion, Nettleham were victorious after finishing runners-up in the same competition the previous year.

The 2nd XI were also crowned champions of their respective league and will start the next season in Division Two of the Lincolnshire County Cricket League. Many thanks and congratulations to captain Martin Connor for a successful season, with a good blend of both youth and experienced players in the side.

On Sundays, the 1st XI have gained promotion to the Premier Division of the Lincoln League and congratulations to captain, Dave Hutchinson.

Many new players have joined the club this year, entering sides at differing standards.

The addition of the new Sunday 2nd XI has provided an excellent opportunity for new players to find their feet within the club.

They also had a successful first season in the league under their captain, Adam Hickingbotham.

As mentioned in the last edition of Nettleham News, the club has acquired the services of Australian Jarrod Allan. Jarrod

joined in May and his contribution to the club as a whole has been exceptional.

Jarrod went on to win both the club batting and bowling awards with an average of 61.64 with the bat and 10.57 with the ball, taking 69 wickets in the process.

His best figures were 9-41, including a hat-trick against Grimsby Town. He also battered Skegness with a top score of 166 not out!

The club is also very proud to announce we have secured Jarrod’s services again for the forthcoming season. He will be available for specialist cricket coaching for any age group throughout they year. If you wish to enquire about one-to-one coaching with Jarrod, please contact Russ Binnington.

On 12 November the club held its annual presentation evening at the White Hart Hotel in Bailgate. Many thanks to Colin and Emma Wolfson for organising the event, which turned out to be a good night for all present. Spinner of the Year Richard Baker Midweek Player of the Year Ed Finnegan Clubman of the Year Adam Hickingbotham Junior Clubman of the Year Anthony Rice (Maggot) Club Captain, Russ Binnington and Colin Wolfson organised a junior cricket tournament held at Mulsanne Park in August. This involved teams of U9’s and U10’s from around the county playing in a kwik-cricket competition. In the U9’s section Cleethorpes were winners over Lindum, while in the U10’s Market Rasen were victorious over Bracebridge Heath. In all there were over one hundred children participating in what was a great day of cricket for all involved. Many thanks to committee members, players and parents for taking the time out of their schedules for making this a successful event for the third year in a row.

Even though one of our young Nettleham sides did not triumph in the tournament, Nettleham does boast a youth set-up that is second to none and has seen many local cricketers progress through the ranks to play county cricket at various youth levels and then going on to represent the club at senior level.

The Junior presentation was held up at Mulsanne Park during September. There was a marvellous turnout for the event.

Congratulations to all of the award winners and many thanks to all of the junior managers and parents for their continued support, without which none of the above would have been possible.

Each year requires a large fund-raising effort to ensure operational costs are covered. This effort frequently lies with the non-playing and committee members, to whom all the players are very grateful.

A series of fund-raising events are organized throughout the year, including race nights, quiz nights, multi-sport events and jumble sales. Recently the club sold Lord Taverner raffle tickets to raise funds.

Many thanks to Kathleen Rowlett, Jarrod Allan and Dave Wheatley, who were kind enough to take the time and sell these in the village. Thank you to anyone who bought one for your support.

The Nettleham Danelaw Christmas t was the best of times, and the worst of times (what a cracking start - it’s surprising that someone hasn’t started that way before!).

I

less civilised part of the country, Yorkshire or Norfolk, for example, where they might have found some easy pickings, from the simpler people who lived there.

We’re talking about the Danes now, over-sized, , over-blonde and over ere! (NettleHAM gives the game away) and this is a short, but we trust illuminating, piece of our history, from those exciting times.

After the refreshing scuffle and bit of bloodshed, wounds were patched up, with an odd amputation. The Christmas ale was brought out and the new arrivals were given a good feast, and the talk soon established that some of them were distantly related to village families.

It would have been in mid-December, at the end of a tiring day’s sport, pigsticking, when one or two of the ‘lads’ were at their ease with a jar or two of the local brew of mead, on the Green, at the centre of the village. The gentle roar of ‘The Meg’ at the top of the village was soothing. The old roman water supply to Lind-Coln, as it was then known, was still in full flow, ‘Day’ne Night’. The ‘Greet Well’ still functioned, and all was right with the world.

One turned out to be a nephew of the man who put the Grimm in ‘Grimsby’! They found beds for the night and were invited to join one of our pre-Christmas raiding parties, which, in the following days, were due to have another ‘go’ at

Several of the other local dogs created havoc with the rest of the party. One of the ‘would be’ raiders afterwards became known as ‘The Dane Geld’ (a hound had bit off as much as it could chew!) and a good crowd of locals turned out to see what was going on, whilst others didn’t ‘deign’ to.

The visitors were rather late, as the village had been a ‘Danelaw’ area for many years, and there was an obvious misunderstanding. It transpired that due to a navigational error, (or a bit of devilment on the part of the ship’s captain), they had paid to be dropped ashore on the coast at a

Some things, however, have come down from time immemorable, to this very day! Things like Danish Pastry, and, of course, Danish Bacon.

He, as is well known came from a Nettle ‘Ham’ family, related to the ‘Chitterlings’ - a big brood! The Danish ‘Bacon’ was a great versifier and literary man (as is the writer).

He, as was recognised in literary circles many years later, was the man what wrote all the stuff erroneously accredited to ‘Bill’ Shakespear!

‘Bill’ was actually a spear-carrier, rarely sober, hence the ‘Shake’. He gained fame and favour with the playgoers, in the stalls, and the ‘Gods’, (as the cheap seats were called at that time).

This last came about because it was in the lap of the Gods whether fire would break out from the ‘Capstan Full Strength’ which ‘Nutty-Walt’ Raleigh had popularised and were smoked, as now, by us lower classes!

Then came the sound of a horn and drum beats, at first, distant, but slowly drawing near. It was strange - a bit late in the day for traders to be arriving from the landings at Skeggy’s Ness and stranger still for someone to leave the Roman road and come into the settlement. Round the corner of the Co-operative trading post came a bedraggled, savage looking, band.

Since the Romans had left, the old road hadn’t been maintained much, so it was a couple of days’ hard slog to get to town from the coast.

The leader of the group waved a sword at our group and in a strange accent shouted “Stay where you are. “De , Danes is ere!”. You are my prisoners.” “You must be joking mate” was the reply, as one of the village stray dogs, itself a ‘Great Dane’, bit a chunk out of the horse, and the would-be conquerer bit a chunk out of the path.

All this so far, you might well say, is irrelevant, but, to get to the point, already the yule logs for the Christmas fires were cut and stacked for the festivities. Hacelet and faggotts were in the cool store and plump geese, ducks, pigs and poultry were fattened and looking forward to the Big Day. Cakes, sweetmeats, nuts and dried fruit were stocked ‘up to the Gunnels’. (The Gunnels were a big family who lived on Mill Hill at that time).

Well Ton, which, as the name suggests, was more of a Saxon settlement. This accounts for the fact that we’ve never really ‘got on’, with them. The lads at Reep Ham, however, from across the Roman road were already lined up to join the party, in the search for a few extra Christmas presents for the family.

They were simple, uncomplicated days. The beasts and swine were part of the family and it was a proud boast that we were fit to live with the pigs. Much verse and song centred on our close relationship with them, and many current words, such as ‘chitterlings’ remind us of those days, when there was so much ‘chitter-chatter’.

In other ways we had lost some of the best of things. For example, only a few of the old people still wore ‘woad’. The youngsters at this time were discouraged from wearing it. It did 64

Luckily, the new visitors had arrived at just the right time. Being ‘continental’ they, as today’s continentals, were largely irreligious other than as an excuse for warring. However, having been received here in such fine style, they left to return to the continent in the New Year, and to spread the good news of us to the Danes in general, encouraging them to visit as often as they now do.

It also accounts for the fact that while they used to have more of a celebration at the New Year than at Christmas, they now make a week of it, as do we - and it’s Day’ne night!

The Story of the Misdeeds of Thomas and Isaac Hallam Just about everyone in the village is familiar with the gravestone of Thomas Gardiner, located under the huge horse chestnut tree near the Beck and depicted on the front cover of this edition, but perhaps not all are familiar with the story behind this sad little memorial to the Lincoln post boy.

The following text is a verbatim account of the demise of the two brothers Thomas and Isaac Hallam, written in July 1848 by William Borman (1817 - 1879) of Market Rasen. Due to deterioration of the original document, it was copied by Charles William Borman whilst living at West Drive, Sudbrooke, in 1931.

This handwritten book, containing the full account was kindly brought in by John Borman (great-grandson of William) at the first Nettleham Heritage Day on Saturday 15 January 2005.

For the bloody and inhuman murder of Mr Wright of Market Rasen, and Thomas Gardiner the Lincoln Post Boy in January 1732-3, for which wicked actions they were tried at the late Lent Assizes at Lincoln and condemned by the honourable Judge Proben to be executed and hung in chains as a lasting Monument to God’s wrath against such Villainous and Inhuman Barbarity.

master, learned to read and write, which necessary pieces of education his father’s circumstances had abridged him of.

Upon Lobsey’s resigning the Post office, Isaac went well recommended into the services of Col Rupeles in London, in which two places he lived in good credit about four years, but his inclinations being strong towards Lincoln, he agreed with Mr Randes, the Post Master of Lincoln, to serve him in the riding Post, the first year at £35, and the second year at £52 per annum, finding his own horses.

Whilst in this service, Isaac married a woman of fair character with a small fortune, but still served his master very faithfully for two years.

Thomas and Isaac Hallam were two unhappy brothers of an unfortunate family. Thomas, the eldest, was 26 years old at the time of his death, and Isaac 24. They were born at a farmhouse called Flows Grange, about three miles from Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, where their father occupied a large farm of about £300 a year and had a numerous issue.

Among several other ill turns of fortune which befell this family, their uncle (a blacksmith by trade) was hanged at Lincoln for strangling his sweetheart with cord.

Their father, meeting with losses and misfortunes, was stripped of all his substance and confined at Lincoln Castle for debt and their mother broke her heart with grief at such sad desolation. These lads, who were then but striplings, were forced to live in the gaol with their father and to run errands for the prisoners for the small reward of a few pence, to keep themselves from starving. The father, having obtained his liberty, kept an alehouse near Newport Gates in Lincoln for several years and did very poor, about two years before the Terrible Desolation of his sons. He was a native of Lincoln, and failing in Leicestershire, removed to this town with his family.

Mr Alderman Lobsey of Lincoln took Isaac at twelve years of age to ride Post, whom he served faithfully and diligently for five years, and, living in favour with a kind and indulgent

But having had a bastard child laid to him, together with some loss in horses and some matrimonial discontentments, he suddenly grew restless in his business, encroaching further into his master’s debt and, being of such a fiery, haughty temper as would not bear reproof, this course turned him out of place £25 in his master’s debt, who, having no probable means to recover the debt but by an arrest, Isaac lay about five months in gaol. Mr Randes, having got a respect for the man, gave him his liberty on receiving £5 in cash and a bond payable at several times for the remaining part.

This supposed piece of hardship Isaac blamed as the foundation and cause of all his future wickedness, not considering that while he acted well he received the due reward for his industry, and that when he receded from his duty, his master’s business required a more careful servant. From this period, he bore such a mortal hatred to his late master, that he threatened unheard of cruelty and revenge if ever he got him in his power.

Isaac, designing for London, and Mr Wood the gaoler having a respect for him, pitying his misfortunes and having a good opinion of his capacity, lent him £11 on his own bond to begin again in the world.

Being come to London, he found out his brother Thomas who, having lived in a variety of places, had learned to play on the violin and also played surprisingly well with a Leaf on his lips. He had also, in a gentleman’s service, been taught to shave and dress wigs, with those qualifications, being but newly married and having one child, he had set up a Barber’s shop on Saffron Hill, but though not usually ingenious yet given to drunkeness and habituated to a dissolute way of living, he was soon in nefarious circumstances and his way of life made him acquainted with bad company, with whom he had committed several petty robberies on the highway.

On Isaac coming, they agreed to join money and trade together on managing a Brandy shop and lived a merry life so long as the brandy casks would run, but the profit of their trade bearing no proportion to their profuse way of living, their stock was soon exhausted and they agreed to supply their necessities on the highway, in the prosecution of which they committed upwards of fifty robberies and two bloody murders in less than three months time, a confession and detail of which you have as follows in Isaac’s own words and penned by himself when he was in prison, and by his desire published at large: First we went and bought a pair of pistols in Holborn and set out on November 12th, 1731, on foot, and went to Leicester where we stopped an hour at the town, then hid on the road to Nottingham, about an hour after it was dark.

I (Isaac) stopped a man and gave him some desperate blows on the head, designing to bring him off his horse, but he recovered them, slipped his spurs to his horse and got from us, but was desperately abused. We went from thence on towards Grantham, travelling most part of the night for fear of being pursued and when we were within a mile of Grantham on the road to ‘Crasen’? we stopped a man and demanded some money, but he refused to deliver it.

The Story of the Misdeeds We held his horse fast by the bridle and beat him with our sticks about his head, the poor fellow in the meantime frequently turning his head towards Grantham, cried out very lamentably and being very dark we were fearful of company coming upon us from the market, so I pulled a pistol out of my bosom and threatened to shoot him immediately, he then delivered, begging his purse and key, but we gave him only his Butler basket and bid him be gone or we would blow his brains out. He then rode off as fast as his horse could carry him towards Crasen and we went towards Cold Harborough, where we stayed all night.

From thence we went to Sleaford with a design to rob the Market people, but it proving a rainy day broke our design, we then went on Sleaford road and about Uppingham in the county of Rutland. By the Woods we stopped a man who gave us his money without any trouble, he told us he was going to Lincoln so we gave him 1/6d to bear his charges, for which he was very thankful, from thence we returned towards Stamford again and about half a mile above the town on the road to London, we met two men, one of whom got away, but the other we pulled off his horse, robbed him thereof, took his money, exchanged hats with him and bid him ‘Good-night’.

From thence we went to Northampton and put up our horse at one end of the town and went to the other, intending to rob the market people that night as they went out and we stopped the first man that came, but he cried out ‘Thieves, Robbers, Murderers’ and people coming fast upon us, we were forced to leave him, or be taken. So we gave him some blows with our sticks and left him and ran round the outside of the town to our quarters, called on the Hostler to feed our horse and ordered a supper, stayed there all night, not hearing any noise of what we had been attempting.

From thence we set off for Fenny Stratford in Bedfordshire, from thence we took the Oxford Road from London to Bath and between Maidenhead and Stow we stopped a man and broke his head in several places, but he saved his money, for, being noonday, people were very thick upon the road and he cried so loud that we were forced to leave him.

We crossed over the fields to Windsor and so into Manchester Road where about half an hour after it was dark, we met a man about three miles from Farnham in Berkshire. Brother Thomas stopped him, but not having fast hold of his horse’s bridle, the man gave him a blow with the thick end of his whip and, clapping spurs to his horse, got away.

We went into Salisbury Road and from Bagshot to Blackwater, where we robbed a man of his money, and he begging hard, saying he was on a long journey, we gave him ninepence to bear his charges.

From thence we went to Epping Forest in the road to Yorwick from London where we robbed a man of two shirts, a neck cloth and what money he had. It being Christmas Day, we gave him 1/6d for a Christmas Box. We went from thence into the County of Rutland, where we robbed a man about five miles from Stamford, and a woman, from whom we took a silver spoon, but having a ring on her finger, she put it into her mouth. I clapped my fingers on her throat and swore if she swallowed it, I would make her spew it up again, but she, still refusing to part with it, I clapped my pistol to her mouth and swore I would shoot her if she did not deliver it, but the woman proved obstinate, saying it was her wedding ring and she would sooner lose her life than part with it, so I damned her and let her go like a Bitch as she was.

heath, we passed over Washingborough Ferry and so on towards Dunholme, within a mile and a half of that place we espied a Chaise with a man in it coming our road, the sight of which rejoiced us much, hoping it would prove a good booty, not knowing who he was (this was Mr Wright, a young man of Market Rasen). Seeing he had a spare horse ready saddled and bridled and we had but one horse for us both, we thought of taking his saddle horse and money from him and so let him go.

As soon as he came up to us, we asked him to let one of us ride, upon which he enquired where we were going and we told him ‘to Market Rasen to buy swine, so he bid one of us take the horse and ride, for he was going there himself and should be very glad of our company. So I mounted his horse and Mr Wright asked me if I was not the man that used to come on Post to Market Rasen and I said ‘No’, Says he ‘You are very much like him’. When we came to Dunholme, we called there at the ‘Leather Bottle’ and stayed to drink six quarts of ale and were very merry, but I, seeing some persons there that knew me, did not alight but sat and drank on horseback with the cape of my great coat muffled up about my face.

Notwithstanding this precaution, while Mr Wright was alighted and gone into the house, the landlord of Langworth Inn being there, knew me and we shaked hands, so calling a reckoning I paid one shilling, Thomas eightpence and Wright a groat.

From thence we went to Grantham, and in the road to Ancaster we robbed a man of 6/4d (all the money he had), and blue great coat, we went to Ancaster and lay there at night, and going next morning upon the Heath in the Lincoln Road about six or seven miles from Ancaster, we met an old man, one Thomas Mockins of Sleaford, whom we pulled off his horse, telling him we were two decayed gentlemen and wanted his money, we took 5/- from him and leading him out of the road into some goss, stript him to the skin and took his straight coat and shirt from him, but returned the rest of his clothes.

While I was stripping the old man, Thomas took his horse and rode him upon some high ground looking towards Temple Bruer to see if the coast was clear, and returning back said ‘What Isaac, haven’t you killed the old Deleon yet?’

Oh Damn him, ‘an old rogue’ says I, he can’t live much longer, let him go. Anyhow, we made the old fellow lie as snug as a hare while some company at a distance passed by. Taking his horse we both mounted and riding across the 66

We set out from Dunholme to Rasen about sunset and as soon as we had got a quarter of a mile from thence Thomas, being very drunk, rode up to Mr Wright and bid him stand. Mr Wright asked him what he wanted of him, but the Sot was so drunk he could not tell him, but still kept bidding him stand and swearing he would knock him down with his stick. But Mr Wright drove on and the Chaise wheels caught hold of Thomas’s leg and pulled him down from his horse. He got up again with some difficulty and I, perceiving several people were yet abroad, desired Thomas to let him alone while it was dark and then fall upon him.

We kept on with him till we came to Faldingworth Ingsgate and there Thomas stopped him again, but I still thought it was too soon and, riding up to Thomas, took the stick out of his hand, opened Wright the gate and we went on together till we got about the middle of the Ings and there Thomas tumbled from his horse again and cried out ‘Isaac, Isaac’ several times, so then Wright knew me and said ‘Give me my horse Isaac and go keep the man up’.

‘No, damn him’ says I, ‘as we have come thus far together we’ll not part yet’, so I made him go

of Thomas and Isaac Hallam back and we helped Thomas into the Chaise, for he was too drunk to sit on horse-back.

We jogged on until we came into Middle Rasen Fields and then I told Thomas where we were, so he immediately fell to using Wright ill, but he, proving too strong for him, pushed him out of the Chaise. Thomas then calling me to come and help him, I pulled Wright out of the Chaise, who begged for mercy desiring I would save his life and take what he had. I told him if I spared his life he would take ours and dead men tell no tales, I then threw him down, set my knee upon his chest and cut his throat, though he struggled hard for his life before I could effect it. He cried out in a very lamentable manner and screamed out so dreadfully that any heart less hardened than mine would have given over the Bloody work.

This unhappy youth, the only son of his mournful parents and chief delight of his aged grandfather, was found next day by a shepherd, murdered in this frightful manner.

The Chaise was driven out of the road, the horse turned loose and the corpse close buttoned up in the Chaise in an upright position and wrapped up in the horse cloth. A piece was cut quite out of his throat, leaving a deep and ghastly wound clean through his windpipe, five inches wide and four inches deep. There were several other wounds upon his breast and some of his fingers almost cut off and the piece of flesh, cut out of his throat, was found in his hat, at a small distance from the Chaise.

After Wright was dead, Thomas lay sometime drunk upon the ground before I could get him sensible, though I struck him several blows very smartly. Having taken Wright’s money, silver spurs, great coat, etc, I led the Chaise with the corpse out of the way.

A man (Mr Davies, a supervisor living at Market Rasen) passing by upon the road, I called to him desiring his assistance to keep Thomas upon horseback, but it being a cold rainy night he kept on his way saying ‘You are two of ye, one help the other’.

The wet and cold having recovered Thomas out of his lethargy I mounted Wright’s horse and Thomas the other, so we rode through Rasen to Linwood and about twelve oclock that night came to Holton Beckering when, being almost perished with rain and cold, went to the Inn, but finding all in bed put our horses in the stable and knocked the family up. After some refreshment, went to bed and laid late the next morning, on account of our clocks being wet.

The family were very inquisitive about some blood they had observed on Wright’s coat, which Thomas then had on, also the horse which

the Landlord knew. I told them Thomas getting drunk, we quarrelled, and made his nose bleed and as for the horse, we had bought it off Wright.

We went from Holton, the next day being Wednesday, the 3rd January, about one oclock, and between five and six the same evening we met the Post Boy (Thomas Gardiner) and stopped him in the road between Langworth and Lincoln.

We did not design to have killed him as not thinking he knew us, but no sooner stopped him than he cried out ‘Isaac, you had better let me alone, keep your distance, or it will be worse for you’. He then blew his horn with all his might and attempted to get away but, coming near me, I caught hold of him and pulled him off his horse and then both of us fell upon him. After a deal of struggling (during which time the poor man cried out in a most piteous manner) Thomas at length got his head down and, kneeling upon it, held both his hands till I cut his throat.

From thence we went to London, stayed there one night and from thence towards Salisbury and robbed a man of all the money he had near Sutton in Hampshire, and another man in the same County, about two miles from Stockbridge.

We designed for Salisbury that night, but it was so dark that we lost our way upon the Downs and was forced to lie under a haystack. The next morning, in our way to Salisbury and about six miles from that place, we came to a Brandy hut where they sold drains, but nobody being there we broke open the door and took a bottle of brandy, drank a part of it. I hung the bottle upon the hedge and meeting a man near the place, we made him carry the bottle into the hut again.

We robbed two men before we came to Salisbury, from the first we took five shillings who said he was a journeyman cloth sheared going to London to seek for work and that we had ruined him, not having one penny left in the world, he was then sixty miles from London.

We little heeded his mournful tale, but charged him to keep on his way, or we would shoot him.

We presently after met a man coming from Salisbury, a Bell-founder by trade, him we robbed of one guinea, four shillings and some halfpence, cut his bridle and girth, took his whip from him and left him.

We went through Salisbury to the place where the Bell-founder pursued and took us, about five hours after we had robbed him.

We also cut the mare’s throat, but am glad to hear since that they recovered her again. We took 15/- out of the Mail and 10/- out of the Post Boy’s pocket. We also rummaged a basket the boy had with him and in it we found a fat goose and two large plumb buns, one of which we took and made the best of our way to Lincoln.

Here we lay in wait for near two hours, in hopes of meeting Mr Randes the Post-master whom it was my determined resolution to have murdered, but happy for him he came not as usual to the post-office that night, otherwise his death had been certain.

Having missed him, we rid through the City and about eight oclock that night came to Bracebridge, where we eat the Post-boy’s bun and laid there that night. Setting forward from thence the next morning, we rode across the country and robbed a man of all the money he had near Berkhamstead in Herefordshire. From thence we took the Oxford road and robbed a man about two miles from Bradford in Middlesex.

The name of the place where we were taken is Wilts, the County town for Wiltshire, about three miles from Salisbury. We had been there about three hours at the Waggon & Horses and Thomas had been playing on the music and the house being full of company we were very merry.

But pretty for us in Liquor when the Bell-founder (who had been directed to us by an old woman that kept a gate in sight of the Inn) raised, the Town came upon us and took us just the instant we had paid our reckoning, had ordered out our horses and were going to leave the place. We were immediately taken before a magistrate and committed to Fisherton Gaol in the County of Wilts.

After we had been about ten days in Fisherton Gaol, Mr Wood, the Lincoln gaoler, came there in pursuit of us and accused us of the murders we must shortly die for. All these are matters of fact, witness our hands.

The Story of the Misdeeds of Thomas and Isaac Hallam As this was the last of their robberies and the instrument of their destruction, we shall begin with a more particular relation thereof as recited by the Bell-founder himself: As I was travelling in January last from Salisbury, the place of my abode, on a journey over the Downs in the road to London about nine oclock in the morning, two men on horseback came towards me, upon the road.

When they came near me, they divided and came close on each side of me and one of them snatched hold of my horse’s bridle and seized my whip, while the other caught me by the collar and presenting a pistol to my breast said ‘Damn you, deliver your money you Dog, or by God, I’ll make the sun shine through you’ I was greatly surprised at finding myself entrapped between two desperate ruffians and my life endangered, without any defensive weapons to protest me from their insults. Making some hasty reflections, I thought it the best policy to give good words: ‘Gentlemen,’ said I, ‘I am sorry to see necessity should force you to commit violence to travellers for your support, for you both look with very honest faces and not like men that have followed this course long’.

‘Sirrah, you lying, canting rascal’ said they, ‘deliver your money this instant or you are a dead man’. Whereupon I desired they would use me civilly, so pulling a guinea, four shillings and threepence (all the money I had) I gave it to them.

‘Damn you’ said one of them ‘is this all?’

I protested it was. ‘But’ said he, ‘I hope to shake a few more yellow boys out of your breeches before I leave you and I swear if I find you’re a deceitful rascal, I will pepper your arse with a brace of bullets’.

So, unbuttoning my breeches, one of them searched narrowly about my waistband and pulled my shirt laps out and finding nothing more than what I had given them, after some heavy threats if I did not keep on my way, cut my bridle and girth all to pieces and left me frighted and penniless to pursue my journey.

I hid my bridle and girth and went a mile further to a Brandy Hut, where I found another man (a clothworker) whom they had also robbed a short time before they met with me. Knowing the man that kept the hut, I gave the man two mugs of Ale and returned home towards Salisbury. I met

several passengers who, upon enquiry and describing the men, told me they were gone towards Salisbury, but the most material intelligence was from a Butcher’s boy that I met as I was going into Salisbury who told me he met them between Salisbury and Wilts. So hastening home, I took two servants with me and went in pursuit of them.

Hallams were the only parties suspected, being seen with Mr Wright at the Public House at Dunholme. Their persons being well known at Lincoln, they were advertised and described in most of the newspapers in the Kingdom and no sooner were they committed to Fisherton gaol, as before related, than the keeper of it was well satisfied they were the persons so advertised.

Coming to a gate at the entrance of the town of Wilts, an old woman that stood to open the gate for passengers and beg their charity, said she saw them go in at the sign of the Waggon & Horses, which was about two hundred yards from the gate, about three hours ago, and perhaps we might find them there.

He therefore wrote immediately to Mr Wood the Keeper of Lincoln Castle, who repaired to Fisherton and claimed the villains by the names of Thomas and Isaac Hallam, laying to their charge the dreadful and unprovoked murders before related. They had changed their names and denied the charge, but Mr Wood took them into a room by themselves and persuaded them, as they were lost men, to confess ingeniously to him, for Wright’s horse would convict them.

They proved obstinate at first and denied everything, saying they were in London at the time the murders were committed, and who saw them buy the horses in Smithfield.

Going into the Inn yard, the Hostler was leading two horses to the door, which I knew. I said to my men ‘These are the horses, the men are not

far off’. So we alighted and went into the Inn and found them sitting by the fire amongst a deal of company. When they saw me enter (though much in liquor) they were struck with such consternation, that we seized them both without difficulty or the least resistance and, taking them before a Magistrate, had them both committed to Fisherton Gaol.

Searching them they had only eleven shillings and some halfpence in their pockets, besides what they took from me that morning. Also each of them a Mohawk penknife and a pistol with a long piece of lead to make bullets, and some gunpowder.

Here endeth the evidence of the Bell-founder as related by him in a Court at a trial of these Bloody Wretches. Let us proceed to give an account by what means they were convicted of the cruel murders before mentioned.

The mangled bodies of Mr Wright and the Post-boy being found diligently, inquiry was immediately made after the savages who perpetrated such hound barbarity. The two 68

But afterwards, they made a full and open confession of their guilt.

Mr Woods (by virtue of an Habeas Corpus) removed them to Lincoln Castle, there to remain to take their trial at the next Assizes.

While they were in prison, they freely confided their crimes to all comers, without the least seeming remorse of conscience and Isaac still retained a violent hatred against Mr Randes.

When they appeared at the bar upon their trials, contrary to every expectation, they pleaded ‘Not Guilty’. Isaac spoke very boldly before the Judge saying he hoped His Lordship would take it into consideration and not condemn them upon bare circumstances, since there was no positive proof they were guilty and that any other person might be as justly accused as themselves.

When their confession was read in Court, which they had made before Chancellor Jewel and Squire Scrope, two Justices of the Peace and signed by themselves, Isaac boldly asserted he had never seen or heard that confession before.

But this obstinate denial availed nothing, there being sufficient evidence without it. Thomas said very little, but seemed rather stupid and not provided with any defence, they were cast in six indictments, any of which was death by the law.
