Nettleham Heritage Day

...and your first 2005 edition of the magazine.

The updated second edition of this village guide should accompany your spring 2005 edition of the magazine and it contains many new listings and advertisements from local businesses. I hope you find it useful and informative. Remember keep it by the telephone - you will need it!

On Saturday 15 January 2005, the village held its very first Heritage Day in All Saints Church from 10.00am - 4.00pm.

Who would ever have believed that, since the last edition, the world would witness a natural disaster that would kill over 300,000 people in the space of a few hours? An unbelievably sad and distressing time for those caught up in this violent and destructive example of the power of nature, but at least the world seems to have acted in unison in its generosity toward the survivors - restoring one’s faith in humanity and its ability to react with sympathy and passion to a desperate and tragic situation.

Rather sadly, at the beginning of a new year when one likes to feel upbeat and positive about the coming months ahead, several items in this edition, too, are of a rather negative nature.

The inclusion of these items is a result of the actions of a minority of people in the village who, through their antisocial behaviour, cause concern and dismay to the majority of more responsible and thoughtful residents.

Mindless vandalism, irresponsible parking, indiscriminate dumping, etc, are all covered here and I would much rather they weren’t!

However, perhaps by bringing these subjects to the attention of readers, those who engage in these undesirable activities may become more aware of the bad feelings which are generated by their unthinking actions.

Once again, I would like to sincerely thank all the distributors for their willingness to deliver this additional publication to your door and, as last year, a local charity will consequently benefit from a substantial donation later in the year - more about this in the summer edition.

Like this magazine, Nettleham Now relies entirely on revenue generated by advertisements and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses who have supported the publication. If you are seeking a particular product or service, I would urge you to use these local businesses whenever possible and don’t forget to mention either Nettleham News and/or Nettleham Now as the source of your enquiry.

Greetwell Lane Refuse Collection As you will see from the Nettleham Noticeboard on page 3, this facility has been discontinued until a suitable new site can be found elsewhere.

It’s rather late now for New Year resolutions, but do please make it your firm intention to be more mindful and aware of other people’s needs and feelings in the months ahead.

I, for one, am sorry to see this very useful refuse collection facility no longer available - it was invaluable for disposing of excess household rubbish and, now it is no longer available, I fear that illegal tipping in ditches, verges and other similar areas may increase. I do hope that an alternative site will soon be found so that this facility can be reinstated.

Magazine Award

May I remind readers again about sending items for the magazine via email.

Readers may remember I was a tad miffed at being placed second in a national competition for parish magazines last year and a kind reader has since let me have a copy of the winter 2004 edition of the winner (Claygate Life: Surrey).

Do please ensure that the words Nettleham News are included in the subject line or, despite my best intentions, your correspondence may get deleted along with the dozens of unsolicited emails which I receive daily.

Once again, it is the actions of just a small minority of selfish people (plus the malicious virus writers!) who spoil what should be a marvellous facility for everyone else.

With a production team of seven and numerous media celebrities living in this seriously affluent neighbourhood (Elaine Paige switched on their Christmas lights this year!) perhaps Nettleham, as a Lincolnshire village, did well to even get a look in. Heigh-ho!

There is a full report on pages 60-63, with lots of photographs taken on the day and I would like to thank Trevor Hardcastle for taking many of these. He even managed to get the Editor on a couple of them - rather a rarity, as I am usually on the other end of the camera!

I would also like to thank all the members of the Nettleham Heritage Association for their efforts and enthusiasm in making this such a successful day and all the visitors who, despite the rather dreary weather, still came along with so many items of local interest.

There was a wealth of memorabilia to see and discuss, but it was also very much a social occasion when many people were heard to say “Hello, I haven’t seen you for ages...” and so the chat continued happily over a cup of tea.

A truly splendid day, which will be continued in the form of a “Follow-up Day” at the Junior School on Saturday 26 February - unfortunately just too late to be included in this edition of the magazine before it goes to press, but a report will be included in the summer edition, due out in the first week of June.

And finally Many thanks to all those contributors, both regular and occasional, who have sent in letters, articles, poems, photographs, news items, etc, for publication.

Without you there would simply be no magazine and I am always amazed at the quality and variety of material that I receive.

Do keep it coming - it enables me to maintain a lively and interesting magazine in the future.

I look forward to hearing from you.

PS Our thanks should go to Tim Walker who spent a considerable amount of his own time shovelling compost and pansy plants out of the Beck in an effort to reinstate the planters to their previous appearance following the unwelcome attention of vandals. Nettleham Parish Council News Award for Nettleham News

Mulsanne Park & Sports Pavilion

Nettleham News has been recognised by the National Association of Local Councils as runner up in the national competition for the best village/small town publication.

Nigel Kingston was presented with the certificate by the Chairman of the Parish Council. Nigel commented that the success was due to the quality of information and articles sent in by residents.

The Parish Council has approved, in principle, a five year plan for the Sportsfield and Pavilion.

In the current year (2004/5), it is anticipated that refurbishment costs amounting to approximately £16,500 will be incurred, which includes a sum of approximately £7,500 for alterations to comply with the regulations of the Disabled Discrimination Act 1995.

Refuse Disposal Facility: Greetwell Lane Residents may already be aware that a decision has recently been taken to withdraw this facility - acknowledged to have been a very valuable service for residents over the years.

Local Plan Review

This practice is unacceptable - if Council trees need pruning or trimming, then residents should report the matter to the Clerk, who can then take appropriate action.

The Clerk has provided a detailed statement, on behalf of the Parish Council, to the forthcoming Public Enquiry objecting to the proposal to designate the Police Field for residential purposes.

Q

However, the Parish do not own, or have exclusive use of, this site and increasing activity at the site by private contractors recently, has rendered the site difficult to use safely by residents. There are few alternative practical sites for parking the refuse truck, which would not cause inconvenience to residents.

In addition, the use of green wheelie bins for garden waste (as well as blue and black) is reducing the demand for extra disposal.

Also the government recycling directives create the growing need to separate waste into various categories, which would necessitate having a second truck on site, adding an additional £2,400pa to the Council Tax precept.

Additional roadside collections have also been suggested, but The Parish Council is not happy about this from a safety point of view and the insurance implications, which would be triggered by such a course of action.

The Parish Council would be interested to hear from residents with their ideas and practical suggestions as to what may be done in order to maintain this service.

Trees

The late Harry Dickinson made a very valuable contribution to this village with his work in relation to schemes and advice on local tree matters. It therefore seems fitting to plant a memorial tree in his memory.

Sharp-eyed residents might have noticed there has been a considerable amount of pruning and removing of old trees around the village recently.

It is the Council’s case that this land should be preserved for leisure and recreation, on the basis that there is no viable alternative site in the village that can meet current and future requirements. It is anticipated that the Inspectors’ report and decision will be available later this year.

Youth Meeting Place The Parish Council will be discussing with youth officers whether any suitable local meeting place can be identified, with the view possibly of forming a Youth Club.

Parish Cemeteries

A recent survey has shown that a number of our older trees were getting into a dangerous condition and so immediate action was taken to avoid the possibility of endangering the public.

Infant School Safety Zone

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership made a presentation to the Parish Council to explain their ideas for a school safety zone outside the Infants School on All Saints Lane.

The Parish Council have confirmed to the Home Office that the church cemeteries, in front of the church and the front section of the cemetery (adjacent to the Junior School) are both full. The effect is to enable an order to be made by the Privy Council in confirmation of that fact.

This formal procedure must be followed to ensure that proper care and maintenance of those closed areas are provided for in the future. When the Order is made, the Parish Council can formally request West Lindsey DC to assume responsibility for such maintenance.

QUALITY COUNCIL

It has been commented that roadside verges are also increasingly presenting an untidy appearance, with litter blown into the hedgerows. This is the responsibility of West Lindsey DC and any mess observed should be reported to our Clerk, David Dubut, who will inform the appropriate department.

There have been a number of instances where residents have undertaken trimming and pruning of trees and hedges on Council property, which is adjacent to their own, leaving the cuttings on the ground and creating an unsightly mess.

The proposed parking exclusion zone was to stretch 50 - 75m either side of the edge of the school grounds, taking it almost to Chapel Lane in one direction, and the Chestnuts in the other. The zones would be very high profile with signposts marking the edges of the zone and yellow markings on the road and would be a parking-free area at the start and end of the school day.

It was generally felt by the Council that although improving child safety was an important issue, this scheme would only exacerbate parking in the centre of the village at peak times.

The Parish Council cemetery, to the rear of the area adjacent to the Junior School, still has available space for burials and cremated remains for many years to come, with a further 1.65 acres of land in reserve.

I hope this clarifies any confusion that has arisen with some residents.

But perhaps we could make the meetings a little more attractive? The agendas on the noticeboard by the Co-op don’t actually say the public is welcome!

Then write to the Editor (contact details on page 1) with your own views and get it off your chest.

There are usually 20 or more agenda items (far too many for effectiveness?) and there is rarely a clear indication of why an item is there - good business practice would be to at least say whether it is for information, discussion or decision, and if so, what?

“Refuse Facility - Greetwell Lane” for instance, might be about closing it, opening it more frequently, spending money on it, or charging for it.

It Literally Grew on Me! From small beginnings - a few spare bedding plants one spring about 20 years ago, to a year-round almost full-time occupation, my plants and flowers took over!

It would also be nice to have a target time to end the meeting - I don’t think I’ve seen one through to the end yet! Mind you, I’ve only been about once every two years, but if everyone did that, there’d be a crowd of about 100 at each meeting.

To all the gardeners who have brought their friends and relations for plants, so that they are now growing all over the country.

So perhaps we’d better be careful about attracting too many people by offering tea and biscuits at half time!

To the brides and their mums for letting me be a part of their wedding plans - and not forgetting my own family and my sons for putting up with lots of flowers in their bedrooms because they were the coolest rooms in midsummer (and also for cooking meals when I got behind filling the hanging baskets).

And to my husband who is a Wiz at taking cuttings, mixing compost and for his plant and flower delivery service.

There is still plenty of gardening to be done - I look forward to seeing you all at the Plant Stall at the Ladies Club Spring Fayre in May (see page 7).

Not only are Nettlehammers a very generous lot, they clearly devour the magazine as soon as it arrives. And I have proof.

You kindly included in the last Nettleham News a plea from me for a copy of the Winter 2003 issue. It is now only four days since publication of that plea, but we have already received two copies of the 2003 issue, and are on our eleventh villager phone call! By any standards, an amazing response. and later on 7 December 2004... .... and this afternoon, my cousin Bill China called. He must be in his 70s, and I’m 60. We had never met nor talked before!

2004 has been a quiet year, but we have, however, raised money to contribute to buying a disabled ramp for the Cherry Willingham Practice.

Sincerest Thanks I am writing to thank the people who helped not only my family, but also my late father.

Firstly, I would like to thank Dr Philip Fairchild from Nettleham Medical Practice who went out to visit my father at St Luke’s Nursing Home.

Dr Fairchild is a first-class doctor and left a lasting impression on my father. Full marks must also go to Dr Fairchild and his secretary for piecing together vital information about my father’s medical history from Birmingham in a very short space of time. You both really are stars!

Secondly, I would like to thank St Luke’s Nursing Home, in Scothern, for providing a first-class standard of care and comfort not only to my father, but to myself and my family. I cannot praise them enough.

Sadly, my father, who had travelled from his home in Birmingham to spend Christmas with us in Nettleham, was in the very final stages of lung cancer and died very quickly.

However, we can take great comfort from the fact that the people who were caring for him during his last days gave nothing but their best.

NETTLEHAM LADIES’ CLUB Our annual Spring Fayre will be held this year on Saturday, 7 May at 2.30 pm in the Village Hall.

Our charity this year is SENSE, which has an outreach office in Nettleham, next to the Library and provides advice and support for deafblind children and adults, along with their families.

This year, it hopes to take 4 children away on holiday (with one-to-one carers) and we hope to be able to help with this expense.

NETTLEHAM NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY Nettleham village is a great place to live: fact or fiction?

We will empty the box at the end of MARCH. This evidence-based, anonymous survey could make all the difference for people who feel that their voice is not heard in any other forum. Also, once collated and analysed, the completed survey has the potential to be used in bidding for resources for the village.

We can’t promise that everything will be fixed, but there is a real expectancy that information gathered from this survey will enable resources to be directed where there are real needs, the end result being that the quality of life will improve for people in this community.

As a small group of people, LifeSpring (part of Threshold Nettleham) have tried, over the last year, to identify needs and address them, for example we have painted benches, planted bulbs, picked up litter and cut hedges.

In April we intend to start a fortnightly coffee morning with a difference!

The idea is that people will bring nearly-new items such as baby clothes, children’s clothes, baby equipment, toys and books, to the coffee morning and exchange them for something they need themselves, which someone else has brought.

We are hoping to find a central village venue for this new venture - watch this space!

Who knows, if this is successful and there is a need we may extend it to holding a Saturday coffee morning once a quarter, asking people to bring and exchange nearly new adult clothing.

I

n 2004, Nettleham First Responders were called out on 75 occasions to residents in the village and the surrounding areas. The call-outs ranged from patients suffering from breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, fits, strokes, chest pains and heart attacks.

We still endeavour to run the scheme 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with any ‘off line’ time being extremely minimal. To keep up this high level of cover, we do need more volunteers to join our group as First Responders.

I do believe the group is performing a valuable service for the residents of Nettleham and it would be such a shame if we have to lower the amount of cover that is presently given, due to a lack of First Responders. To help us to maintain this high level of cover we are currently trying to recruit some new responders for the village.

What is a First Responder?

A First Responder is a community-based volunteer who is trained to respond to any life-threatening medical emergency (chest pains, breathing difficulties and unconscious persons) in Nettleham and give early basic life support and defibrillation if required, prior to the ambulance paramedics’ arrival.

How does the system work?

When a 999 call is received at ambulance headquarters, not only is an ambulance dispatched to the casualty’s location, but if the request is deemed to be a life threatening emergency they also contact the on call First Responder in Nettleham, who is instructed to attend. While the ambulance is on its way, the First Responder will be able

to start giving vital early basic life support and improve the casualty’s chances of survival.

We are always prepared to give a talk or presentation about the Nettleham First Responder scheme to any local club, group or organisation in the village, who may be interested in finding out more about the scheme and how we operate.

You will receive full training at the LIVES Head Office in Horncastle and then be part of this valuable scheme. At the present time it costs about £1,600 per year to keep a scheme like ours up and running, so please spare us some of your time.

Why do we need First Responders?

Nettleham is about 4 miles from Lincoln and an ambulance with its sirens and flashing lights can reach any address in about 8 to 12 minutes, depending on road conditions and availability. The problem is if someone suffers a severe heart attack, they could die before it arrives.

Farewell from Gordon & Lesley...

I

t’s almost exactly ten years since Lesley and I moved to Nettleham and thirty five years since I started my ministry as a curate at Boston Stump. Now before us lies retirement and a very different life in a beautiful, but sparsely populated, part of the north-west highlands of Scotland.

We’ve much to be thankful for as we come to the end of our very enjoyable time here. But as it all draws to an end, I can’t help looking back over my working life and the changes I have witnessed.

One sign of just how much has changed is the huge shift in attitudes to church schools. During the 60s and 70s, lots of people were suspicious of church schools as places of indoctrination and so a good many church schools worked hard to play down their church connections and tried to be just like any other state school. Inside the synods and councils of the church at that time there were serious debates about whether to get out of schools altogether and hand them all over to the state.

But thirty years on and people queue up to get their children into church schools in preference to state schools, the church’s investment in schools has grown and the government is actively encouraging it to do more. The turn-round in so short a time is astonishing, and it has curiously all taken place at a time when the church has been in steep decline, with congregations and the full-time clergy reduced by a half!

So what has brought about this shift in attitudes?

Well the jargon word for it all is Ethos. Church schools, it is generally agreed, have an ethos, a character, a spirit that is special which people from within and outside the church value. It’s more difficult to describe this ethos, and it’s not clear that it’s unique to church schools.

Now Carols on the Green is organised by the churches, so you might expect to see a lot of church members there, but a walk around the stalls at the Carnival and a glance at who is providing the entertainment reveals a good number of faces very familiar to me from the churches. Again, within the Nettleham Heritage Association there are quite a few members of churches.

So I wonder if it is perhaps significant that our village community has a relatively high proportion of members of churches - at about ten percent, appreciably higher than the national average. Is there a definite link between the ethos that churches cultivate and the experience of community that so many here value and so many elsewhere long for? The popularity of church schools and the strong community life of Nettleham both suggest that there is.

But that raises a little niggle at the back of my mind. Can that sense of community be maintained by churches that amount to only about ten percent of the population, and can the majority of people who aren’t members of churches expect to continue to experience that sense of community without taking more seriously the faith which undergirds the values and ethos which the churches seem to inject into schools and communities?

A few church schools don’t seem to have it and some state schools do. But crucially, it seems to have something to do with a quality of relationships, a quality of care and a set of underlying values that create a particular kind of community experience - an experience many parents want their children to have.

There seems to be a link between this particular quality and experience of community and church.

Nettleham still has quite a strong sense of community, but that’s no longer the case in many places. In the parish where I worked before moving here, and in many other parts of Britain, virtually all aspects of community life have broken down. Over the last few years, it has been a great delight for me to be part of some of those experiences of community here in Nettleham, when people of every kind come together - the Carnival, Carols on the Green, the recent Nettleham Heritage Day, all of which attract hundreds.

Can I remind you all that cycling on the footpath is not allowed. A footpath is a right of way on foot only, not cycles.

We occasionally receive complaints from local residents about this problem and as I haven’t mentioned it for a while I thought a small reminder wouldn’t go amiss. If you have a cycle please use it on the road, make sure it’s roadworthy, and if you’re using it at night you must have lights fitted, working and switched on!

We have started 2005 with fresh optimism for the year ahead. We had a successful 2004, with crime falling in most areas and we aim to continue this trend for as long as possible. It is only with the help of everyone out there that we will be able to achieve this. Keep up the good work and please contact me with anything you feel we should know about.

I’d like to start off this month’s edition by warning you about a number of incidents that have occurred in villages near to Nettleham. Firstly there have been five house burglaries in the vicinity. Two in North Greetwell, two in Sudbrooke and one in Langworth. All the burglaries occurred during daylight hours and the method of entry was to force rear doors/windows.

We have identified two possible suspects who have been arrested and interviewed in relation to these burglaries, and as soon as there are any developments I’ll let you know.

In the meantime can I urge all of you to be extra vigilant. Please make sure your property is as secure as it can be when you go out, and remember to set your alarms!!

We have increased patrols throughout the area, which includes a dog mobile in an effort to deter any more crimes.

It is important for us all to keep these crimes out of Nettleham and by working together we can hopefully achieve this.

There have also been one or two thefts from sheds recently. There was one on Washdyke Lane in the village where golf equipment was taken. The other instances have been in surrounding villages. Items taken range from golf equipment to garden equipment and furniture.

As before, please check the security on your sheds and outbuildings and make sure they’re locked at all times. I will take this opportunity to unashamedly plug our own range of security equipment to make your sheds and outbuildings safer. We have our usual stock of shed alarms that are reasonably priced at £10 each and also have shed bars that add extra security which we sell for either £25 or £35 depending on the size you want. There have been a number of calls relating to foreign male students going door to door asking for money to help with their student fees. These have mainly been seen in the Sudbrooke/Scothern area but there’s no reason why they won’t come into Nettleham. The males have been checked out and spoken to and hopefully they won’t be returning. Their details have been passed onto the university in Lincoln for them to take their own action. If the males return then it is obviously down to your 14

Riding a bike on a footpath is dangerous and causes a danger to pedestrians which can result in nasty injuries, and just in case you’re wondering, riding your bike on the footpath whilst ringing your bell to warn others of your approach is also illegal and will not save you from being issued with a £30 fine!! Don’t forget that PSCO Smalley can also issue tickets for this offence. We will be in the area to clamp down on this problem so be aware.

In past editions of Nettleham News I have asked for you to get in touch with me and report anything you see that you feel is suspicious, or to inform me of things that you believe I ought to know about. The information I have received has led to a number of incidents being dealt with successfully and I thank you all for your assistance.

The more information I receive the easier it is to keep crime to a minimum and the faster we can detect crime and bring cases to a successful conclusion. There is, however, room for improvement and there are a few areas of the village that I would appreciate you keeping a closer eye on.

The first is the area around All Saints Church - both the church and surrounding grounds, including the cemetery opposite.

We have been watching the area ourselves as a result of complaints regarding damage, under-age drinking and evidence of cannabis use, but unfortunately we cannot be there all the time due to operational commitments. When you are in the area can you report anything suspicious, especially groups of youths who shouldn’t be there. This includes the field at the rear of the cemetery next to the Junior School.

VERY PC! The second area is Mulsanne Park, especially around the football stand. The seating in this area has now been replaced (again!) and we would like to keep it in good condition. Again, evidence of under-age drinking and cannabis abuse have been found, along with instances of damage.

The third and fourth areas are the Junior and Infant Schools in Nettleham. No one should be in the school grounds at any time whilst the schools are closed, this includes play areas, and persons should only be on school grounds, when they are open, for legitimate reasons. Anyone found in any part of the school whilst it is closed can be arrested, and anyone found on school grounds for a non-legitimate reason, whilst the school is open, can also be arrested.

All the areas I have just mentioned are the ones to which we get called most often, usually due to the activities of local youths, and any information you can provide to help us deal with this problem would be greatly welcomed. Any information we do receive will be kept strictly confidential.

Just a reminder that there were a number of new laws that came into being during last year, and also a few older ones that we are reinforcing.

Firstly BB guns. If you’ve had one bought for you recently, don’t take it out in public and only fire it in your own garden. If you’re seen in the street with it, or any other public place, you will be arrested as they are so realistic these days that they are now classed as imitation firearms.

Don’t let any of the round pellets stray from your land either, and don’t point the gun at anyone walking past!!

Don’t let off fireworks from your house after 11pm, except on certain holidays like New Year’s Eve. You’ll end up with a ticket if you do, or a visit to the local court. Don’t carry them with you in a public place either if you are under 18 years - you’ll also receive a ticket.

Anti Social Behaviour Orders are much easier to get, thanks to a recent change in the laws, so if you are persistently acting in an antisocial manner, in public or private, we may be paying you a visit. Driving a vehicle in a manner likely to cause annoyance or distress to others may result in your car being seized from you, and a visit for you to the local court.

Petrol and electric gopeds are also illegal for use on a road unless you have the necessary insurance, licence, headgear and all the same things you would need to ride a moped on the road. The update I had regarding children’s gopeds is that they also come under the same regulations. To be on the safe side I suggest you ride them only on your own property.

Secondly, you will have noticed, over the past few weeks, that the weather has become colder and people are coming out to iced-over cars. Many people have been seen to leave their car engines running to de-ice their cars, whilst returning inside their homes.

This, quite obviously, is a dangerous and foolish thing to do. There have been many instances of cars being stolen because of this thoughtless practice and many insurance companies won’t pay out if you leave your car engine running and the car unattended. You may live in a relatively quiet village, but opportunist thieves operate everywhere, so take the proper precautions and don’t become a victim.

De-icer and a scraper are much cheaper to buy than another car!

The Crime Information Scheme, where I email to warn you of any crime in the area is going from strength to strength.

More people have now joined as a result of my appeal in last edition of Nettleham News, but there is still plenty of room for everyone. Hello, Hello, Hello, What’s all this then?!

Beckside Pre School was turned into a police academy for young recruits, when PC Cook kindly visited us for the afternoon.

We delved deep into our dressing-up box with the eager children; Dylan found his favourite policeman’s hat, Lauryn wore a shiny jacket and Ben wore one of our tabards. Apprehensive little faces told a story when PC Cook came in... have I been good today?... Will I get to hold that radio?... Can I lock the shiny handcuffs?!!

PC Cook asked for lots of helpers. Jo was first to volunteer, but hadn’t bargained on being handcuffed quite so soon! It was all in good fun though and he had an early release!

PC Cook talked about not being afraid of the police and that they are there to help keep children safe. She talked about ‘stranger danger’ and personal safety. The children were encouraged to shout ‘No!’ at the tops of their voices if they felt that they were in danger - and of course they didn’t need telling twice! They nearly raised the roof in their enthusiasm!

Through fun and involvement, PC Cook managed to get the serious messages across to our boys and girls - that at Beckside Pre School safety is paramount. We value each and every one of our children. We pride ourselves on offering a warm, safe and friendly environment, which was one of the major factors to be acknowledged in our Ofsted inspection.

We are not complacent though and we aim to maintain our very high standards.

NETTLEHAM LIBRARY NEWS EXCITING CHANGES AFOOT! Nettleham Library will be closed to the public from Monday 28 February to Saturday 12 March to allow us to introduce some exciting changes to make the Library even more user friendly.

We thank you for your patience whilst the work is being carried out, and apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we hope that you will find the changes worthwhile.

In order to comply with the recent Disability Discrimination Act we are having two brand new automatic doors installed. So, whether you are a wheelchair user, a parent or carer with a pram or pushchair, or simply find our existing doors difficult to use, this change should make entering and leaving the Library a much more comfortable experience. The two new doors will be in alignment meaning that you just walk straight through into the Library rather than having to negotiate the existing dog-leg.

Please look out for the push buttons which you will need to press to get the doors to open.

There will be one just outside the Library, another inside the Library and a third in the foyer area.

Two further things to complete our fortnight of change: the foyer will receive a spruce up with new noticeboards and carpeting, and we are to get a smart new issue/return counter with a low-level area to provide a more comfortable experience for wheelchair users and children.

Whilst we are closed, please use your nearest alternative libraries at Lincoln Central (01522 510800), Cherry Willingham (01522 750124), Welton (01673 860046) and Ermine (01522 523155). Your ticket allows you to borrow and return books at any of these, or indeed any other Lincolnshire Library.

LETS CELEBRATE! To celebrate our new, improved Library, we are holding a grand re-opening day on Monday 14 March starting at 2.00pm, to which everyone is cordially invited. Local and Family History on the web We are offering a free 1 hour online training session. Choose between Monday 4 April between 11.00am and 12 noon, or Thursday 7th April between 5.00pm and 6.00pm. The sessions are designed to show people how to effectively use the Lincolnshire Learning Trails which can be found on the Library website. The Trails are written by experienced local tutors and are about, and specific to, Lincolnshire.

We hope to introduce participants to online local studies by local experts through this introductory course - please call into the Library to pick up a course leaflet. Places are very limited, so please contact us as soon as possible to secure a place.

AND FINALLY …

We still have a number of ‘Message in a Bottle’ plastic bottles donated by Lincoln and Hykeham Lions. This scheme allows people to keep basic personal and medical information inside one of these bottles, which should then be placed in your fridge.

In the event of being called to your house, the emergency services will know you have a bottle by two labels - one is fixed to the inside of your front door and the other to the door of your fridge. The bottles and labels are free and mean that essential information can be quickly and easily found in the event of an emergency.

COMMENT Sadly, once again, the recurring subject of vandalism in the village, features in the pages of this magazine.

Why does it happen? Why do a number of individuals decide to damage or destroy parts of our lovely village environment?

What is their motivation? Boredom?

Disillusionment with society? A gesture against authority? An attitude problem?

Perhaps the answer is to provide these young adults with a means to channel their spare time and abundant energy into something positive and constructive, rather than negative and destructive.

At different times in the past, there have been a number of youth clubs in the village where young people could meet, socialise and participate in different activities. But there has been nothing of this kind for some years now.

The Synergy Urban Impact 2004 initiative, featured on page 37 of the last edition of Nettleham News, is a shining example of just what can be achieved when a group of like-minded young people get together and decide to do something positive for the benefit of the local community.

These young adults derived a great deal of pleasure, together with a sense of personal pride and fulfilment, simply from being together and actively participating in a common interest together. Teamwork - it can be a great feeling to be part of a group of people who all share the same energy, enthusiasm and commitment.

Perhaps a reader, or someone they know, who enjoys working and mixing with young people and has some experience in relating to their needs, would come forward with some new ideas which could be developed for the benefit of these young adults in our own community.

Perhaps some of the younger people in the village could put their heads together and decide what they would like to see in the village. The pages of this magazine are here for everyone to air their ideas, thoughts and suggestions - so tell us what you think is missing and maybe something can be done about it. I would be delighted to hear from anyone, of any age, who has any imaginative ideas on this topic.

You are Paying for this Antisocial Behaviour!

T

he photograph depicts the area near the entrance to the new burial ground and clearly shows the extent of the vandalism which it has suffered over recent months.

Despite regular visits by police officers, a number of youths regularly congregate here leaving the place an untidy eyesore. Empty beer cans, bottles, litter and drug-taking equipment are all evident, together with the broken fence and the severely damaged bunker (specially constructed to contain excess soil from recently dug graves).

Sadly, these young persons seem to think it is acceptable behaviour to wreck whatever they choose, perhaps through boredom, perhaps as a gesture against authority, or perhaps through mindless drunkeness or drug abuse.

But the Parish Council must repair or replace these items and this inevitably comes at a cost to me, to you and to everyone else in the village.

(The football club has itself also been the victim of a number of acts of vandalism, for which it has to find additional funds to repair the damage done at Mulsanne Park).

Since last April, there have been numerous incidents of vandalism in the village, some of which are listed below: The contents of the planters, located on Jubilee Bridge and the High Street, have been tipped into the Beck on a number of occasions.

Coping stones have been removed from Old School yard wall and thrown in the Beck on at least two occasions.

Wooden fencing at Mulsanne Park, Bill Bailey playing field and the new burial ground have all been broken.

Four signs in Bill Bailey playing field have all been removed and need replacing.

Several roof tiles and a drainage downpipe were removed from the Pavilion at Mulsanne Park.

The cost for repairing this vandalism alone is approaching £1000 to date - money which could be more usefully spent elsewhere. This simply has to stop, and readers who witness any acts of vandalism, should report the incident to the police immediately.

The police frequently move these young people on if they are causing a nuisance, but, of course, they simply appear elsewhere in the village.

As one of them remarked to the police officer “Just where can we go?” It’s a fair question and one to which there is currently no answer.

Perhaps if these youngsters had a recognised venue, where they could meet regularly and become involved in some imaginative and stimulating activities, they would no longer need to roam aimlessly around the village.

But finding a suitable venue and engaging them in some constructive activities presents a real and considerable challenge. Any ideas anyone?

What a Dump!

Where do you think this photograph was recently taken?

A vehicle breaker’s yard? A motorway crashed vehicle pound? A commercial scrapyard?

It is actually in the Bishops Palace field in Nettleham - a historic site of significant importance, owned by the Church Commissioners and presided over by English Heritage.

The owners of the mangled Land Rover and old agricultural trailer clearly decided it would be OK to dump them, and other assorted scrap, in this sensitive location.

Unbelievable, isn’t it?!

This really is a bad blot on the local landscape and it’s dangerous too, with lengths of rusty barbed wire, jagged metal edges, broken glass, etc, scattered around in the long grass.

Being informed of the problem, the Parish Council immediately requested the Land Agents to arrange for the refuse removal and cleaning up of the site.

Indiscriminate dumping of this kind simply must not be allowed to proliferate unchallenged in the village.

The Agents responded swiftly and positively to the request and have undertaken to remove the offending refuse, as soon as the necessary arrangements have been made.

What and where next?

Despite frequent appeals by residents, the police, Nettleham Parish Council and this magazine, for motorists to take a more responsible attitude when parking their vehicles in the village, sadly there are still those who persist in flouting the law and regard the pavements and verges as appropriate places for the wheels of their vehicles.

Their selfish, irresponsible (and illegal) behaviour is clearly illustrated by the photographs on these pages and my thanks to the readers who have sent them in (there are a number of my own, too). Sadly, they are not unusual.

Go into the village on any day and you will almost certainly come across examples for yourself.

The Parish Council are particularly concerned about the damage being caused to decorative verges by frequent incursion of vehicle wheels onto the grass. This is illustrated by their recent decision to install the new wooden bollards on the eastern edge of the Green, which had become seriously eroded (see opposite page).

There are numerous other instances around the village where continuous incursion of vehicle wheels has caused the grass verges to degenerate into unsightly, muddy morasses.

It is the responsibility of Lincolnshire County Council to maintain virtually all the grass verges in the village and it’s fairly certain you wouldn’t want to receive a hefty bill from them for reinstating the grass, having severely damaged it through habitual vehicle wheel compaction and erosion.

Other vehicles may frequently be seen parked in such a way that pedestrians wishing to use the pavement, particularly those in wheelchairs, electric buggies, or parents with pushchairs, are seriously obstructed from doing so, simply because of irresponsibly and thoughtlessly parked vehicles.

If there is no convenient parking space available near the shop, hairdresser, Post Office, etc, then use the Co-op car park, there are usually plenty of spaces there for short-term parking. If not, then seek a sensible parking space a little further away and walk the few extra steps to your destination but please don’t park on the pavement!

The roads and streets in our village were never built for today’s traffic and are generally very narrow, so when sizing up a possible parking space, ask yourself if it will cause an obstruction to other road users to park there if so, then seek an alternative parking space elsewhere.

As a result of continuous parking of vehicles with their wheels on the grass of the Green, Nettleham Parish Council considered it necessary to install bollards along the eastern edge of the Green to dissuade motorists from this habit and avoid the area turning into a muddy, unsightly mess.

They look quite attractive, but they have cost £475 of our village money to supply and install, and simply shouldn’t have been necessary in the first place.

The driver of the vehicle below, unable to park partly on the Green because of the new bollards, simply moves across the road and parks partly on the pavement instead! Why not use the Co-op car park - it’s what it’s there for!

The Nettleham Spring Well, here we are again, it’s ‘Spring’, or nearly so, innit!

The lambs will soon be gambolling in the fields - Brag, Pontoon and ‘five cards only!’ rushing round, following a leader - just like humans! It’s a lovely sight, just looking at them conjures up the fragrance of mint sauce doesn’t it!

Maybe they spring about because it is Spring, or the season is called so because of the way they spring about, and the way we all develop a spring in our step, or even the way the weeds spring up in the garden!

It is a reminder of a song of long ago, by an American ethnic minority group -‘The Ink Spots’ who sang “Whispering Grass why do we wonder?” Actually this isn’t proving helpful, because, from memory, it ended: “The Trees they told me so”. Elder readers will no doubt be humming the tune by now, and like the writer wondering what on earth this has to do with the subject in hand, but, like most things, it is beyond me!

Let’s start again with a beautiful New York, American poem: Der Spring is sprung, der Grass is Riz, I wunder where dem Birdies is?

De Boids is on dee Wing!

But dat’s absoid, becorse of corse De wing is on de Boid!

The grass-cutting season is now upon us and this is the time when you remember that you had intended to get the mower, shears and hedge trimmer serviced in the winter, but now there is a long queue!

At ‘the back end’ we lent our mower to an Australian acquaintance, renting a local house, and he didn’t return it. We had to go round to get it back, and he said he was sorry, he “mint to return it ‘Blew’.” The wife said “That’s alright, it was always green and we wouldn’t have wanted it changed!”

What this has to do with ‘Spring’ is anybody’s guess. This article is supposed to be about the legendary, or illegible, or maybe inedible, Albert Spring, of great historic fame, from the time when ‘Netilham’ was known for the’ Spring family and, in particular, ‘WhiSpring’ Albert. He was the youngest in a big family and very small.

No-one took much notice of him and fewer still listened to him. As it was, he had a stammer and he found that speaking in a small voice gained attention. For the rest of his life he couldn’t break the habit, and as an obvious reaction, everyone bawled and shouted when speaking to him, assuming him to be deaf as well!

This, he found useful at home - for unless Margaret, his mother, gave it ‘full throat’ he ignored it. She soon adopted the ‘roaring’ habit, which was annoying to the rest of the family, the neighbours and the village in general.

A further obstacle to making a meal from a Swan, was, of course, due to Bishop Hugh of Avalon, or Saint Hugh as he became. In the late eleven hundreds he was Lord of the Manor here, and had a pet swan as his constant companion!

He was sturdy enough, although he had to stand on a box to reach Puberty, and he found a niche in village life in carrying small goods and messages around the village and to and from the neighbourhood. Being short, he was easy to ‘load’ and he was less trouble than a donkey. In fact his older brother used to address him as ‘Donkey’, and this caught on with others, which Albert accepted. When someone asked him why his brother called him that he shyly whispered “He haw... He haw... He haways calls me that!”

Margaret’s voice meanwhile, when trying to communicate with the son who didn’t seem to want to hear, grew ever more powerful.

So, a better bet, for something a bit different, with a bit more on them, were blackbirds. That was where ‘Meg’ came in. Giving voice around the boundary Meg could drive the blackbirds to fly towards the blackbird traps, and the bowmen.

The rest, as you will know, was history.

This, of course is not uncommon nowadays, when a mother is competing for attention with Television, Radio, Video Games and the like.

The shriek, when the mother (whose son, is frying himself some chips, while trying to keep in touch with a TV cartoon), finds the unguarded pan and the cooker aflame, is amazing!

Life hadn’t been easy for Margaret, or ‘Meg’ as she was commonly known (or known to be commonly), although she came in useful for calling the cows home, or scaring the rooks. On a clear day, she could be heard from over a mile away and her fame spread. For Public proclamations from the Bishop’s Palace, when people were needed to clear up after a particularly ‘good do!’ she was invaluable. Stationed down the road to announce the arrival of expected visitors, she ensured that the reception at the door was fully prepared. She also received tips from visitors, on their arrival for the Crow stoning season, and particularly when the races were on down on Lincoln’s common, or, when the bow and arrow parties were out after the birds up on the Heath. The village and Lincoln bookmakers often took a beating!

Then, as now, most of the village youth were out after the birds, one way or another, although in those times they were mostly wanted for the pot!

Chickens, Geese, Ducks and tame Pigeons were plentiful for every household, but tasty smaller birds, and their eggs, needed finding. Swans, not only put up an enormous fight making them hardly worth the effort, (who wants a broken leg for Christmas?), but they all belonged to the King. Taking one was ‘a hanging’ offence and the modern expression ‘hanging around’ which is so popular now with some of our youth, was in those times apposite, but not desirable. It is not all that has changed for the better!

Four-and-twenty blackbirds, baked in a pie, was a very dainty dish indeed to set before the king, but a regular speciality for the Nettleham locals!

Now, in the days of which we’re speaking, the village water came from ‘The Beck’ as it is known now, although it wasn’t then a little stream. It came from the springs in the sloping ground to the west of the village and fell back into what was then a wide shallow ‘beck’ running by the Bishop’s Palace - hence the expression for altering the clocks to improve daylight time: ‘Spring’ forward - ‘Fall’ back.

It was quite noisy and perhaps it was that that inspired ‘Meg’ to develop her voice, not liking anything to disguise what she had to say. She was so successful and famous, that a Cannon was named after her during the Civil War! More recently, visitors approaching from Lincoln would know when they were nearing here, because they could hear her from where the uphill Lincoln Fire Brigade is based, on the Nettleham Road. Now, newcomers to the village, probably wouldn’t know, but older residents will remember that up to a few years ago a public house marked that spot. It was called the ‘Roaring Meg’, to commemorate her.

Appropriately, it was a lively venue, pretty noisy, but providing good company, entertainment and the possibility of ‘picking up’ a bargain.

There is speculation, although it seems unlikely, that ‘Meg’ being out and about throughout her long life, and consequently being well tanned, or ‘weathered’ scaring rooks and crows off the crops by ‘cawing’ loudly gave rise to the name of the pub on the edge of the village -’The Brown Caw’??

Still, occasionally, on a clear winter’s night a roaring sound can be heard in Nettleham. This may be put down to aircraft, but who knows? It could be a ‘blast from the past’ from old ‘Netilham’!

Nettleham British Legion Poppy Appeal 2004 The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal continues to gain tremendous support from the Nettleham community.

My sincerest thanks must go to everyone concerned - particularly the house to house collectors who did their usual brilliant job. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to take on this task and their efforts are much appreciated. We had one extra lady this year and my special thanks go to her for actually coming forward to offer her services so willingly and gladly.

Some of the house to house collectors thought their totals were down on 2003, whilst others thought they were up. In fact, both were right, as they did vary in both directions from last year.

However, the total for house to house collections was £1,203.81, an increase on last year’s total and that’s what really matters!

The commercial outlets again very kindly gave us valuable space on their counters and desks for our static collection points, which I’m sure must cause them difficulties from time to time.

Despite the loss of two commercial outlets, another successful campaign was conducted in 2004, raising a total of £995.40, again better than last year.

With an additional sum of £49.31 from the church collection, the total raised was the magnificent sum of £2,248.52 (£56.00 more than the previous year).

My appreciation also goes, as usual, to our organising team, in recognition of all the ongoing work which they continue to do. We were also able to enlist the aid of two extra helpers for the distribution of poppies and collecting tins, and also for counting of money.

Many thanks to them also.

There have been suggestions from a number of different sources that perhaps the real meaning of, and the reason for, the British Legion Poppy Appeal may not be fully understood, especially amongst the younger generation. Whether or not this is true, perhaps the accompanying article may go some way in answering a few questions.

REMEMBRANCE DAY November is poppy month, the time of the year when we wear a red poppy in memory of those who sacrificed their lives for us during wartime.

The eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, marks the signing of the Armistice on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One. At 11.00am on that day, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare.

What is Remembrance Day? Remembrance Day is on 11th November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time, the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11th November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain and a national ceremony takes place at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London.

But why a poppy?

Throughout the world, the poppy is associated with the remembrance of those who died in order that we may be free, but how many of us are aware of the reason of how and why the poppy became the symbol of remembrance and an integral part of the work of the Royal British Legion.

Flanders is the name of the whole western part of Belgium. It saw some the most concentrated and bloodiest fighting of the First World War. There was complete devastation - buildings, roads, trees and natural life simply disappeared.

Where once there were homes and farms there was now a sea of mud - a grave for the dead, where men still lived and fought. Only one other living thing survived - the poppy, flowering each year with the coming of the warm weather and bringing life, hope, colour and reassurance to those still fighting.

Poppies only flower in disturbed soil - their seeds can lie dormant in the ground for many years without germinating, and only grow after the ground has been disturbed in some way.

John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Armed Forces, was so deeply moved by what he saw in northern France that, in 1915, in his pocket book, he scribbled down the poem “In Flanders Fields”.

McCrae’s poem was eventually published in ‘Punch’ magazine under its title ‘In Flanders Fields’. The poppy thus became a popular symbol for soldiers who died in battle. (See the Nettleham News Poetry Page 41).

In 1918, Moira Michael, an American, wrote a poem in reply, ‘We shall keep the faith’, in which she promised to wear a poppy ‘in honour of our dead’. This began the tradition of wearing a poppy in remembrance.

The first actual Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11th November 1921 and was a national success raising £106,000. Since then, during every November, we keep the memory alive by wearing a poppy to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during war.

Americans celebrate Veterans Day and here, in Britain, we have Remembrance Day. The First Two Minute Silence was in London (11th November 1919) and was reported in the Manchester Guardian, 12th November 1919: “The first stroke of eleven produced a magical effect. The tram cars glided into stillness, motors ceased to cough and fume, and stopped dead, and the mighty-limbed dray horses hunched back upon their loads and stopped also, seeming to do it of their own volition.

Someone took off his hat, and, with a nervous hesitancy, the rest of the men bowed their heads also. Here and there an old soldier could be detected slipping unconsciously into the posture of ‘attention’. An elderly woman, not far away, wiped her eyes, and the man beside her looked white and stern. Everyone stood very still ... the hush deepened. It had spread over the whole city and become so pronounced as to impress one with a sense of audibility.

It was a silence which was almost pain. And the spirit of memory brooded over it all.”

Irish Dancing Comes to Nettleham!

Readers with long memories may recall an article in the winter 1989 edition which featured Colleen Roberts.

Well, sixteen years on, here she is again! performance was expanded to become the smash hit Musical Dance Show Riverdance.

However, all was not well and Flatley shocked the world by walking out on Riverdance and announcing that he was to produce his own Irish Dance Show to be called Lord of the Dance.

After several audition “call backs” Colleen was chosen as one of the dancers for this new show and began rehearsals in Dublin.

t three years of age, when Colleen Roberts of Nettleham won her very first medal for Irish Dancing, she couldn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams that it would take her all over the world!

Her first Championship followed at just six years old and at the age of ten, Colleen became Great Britain Champion.

Over the next six years, she continued to compete as an amateur Irish Dancer in England, Ireland and America in various competitions including National and World Championships, winning thousands of medals and trophies!

At the age of 17, whilst in Ireland competing for the World Championships, Colleen entered an audition for an ambitious American Irish dancer called Michael Flatley.

Michael Flatley had earned rave reviews for an Irish Dance sequence he had choreographed and performed as the “half time” entertainment in the Eurovision Song Contest. His thrilling dance style entranced the world and the “halftime”

While intensive rehearsals continued for three months, Colleen, with other cast members, appeared on promotional TV shows which included The National Lottery; The Royal Command Performance for Prince Charles at the Albert Hall; The Late Late Show and many more.

The Lord of the Dance opened at “The Point” in Dublin in July 1997 to rave reviews from critics and public alike and a whole new way of life had begun for Colleen.

Over the next seven years, Colleen and Lord of the Dance literally took off around the world.

The Show broke box office records, performing to sell-out audiences in Australia, America, Israel, Japan, South Africa and throughout Europe.

Highlights of those years included performing at Disneyland in Florida, at the 69th Annual Awards Ceremony “The Oscars” and, with 100 other dancers, in front of 25,000 people in Hyde Park in Michel Flatley’s extravaganza Feet of Flames!

Unfortunately Colleen’s dancing career came to a sudden end! Whilst performing the lead role in a new Dance Show in Lucerne, Switzerland Colleen snapped her Achilles tendon.

After three months in plaster and several months of physiotherapy and exercises she was able to walk again, but the Achilles tendon clearly wasn’t strong enough to continue the life of a professional Irish Dancer any more.

Due to this turn of events, Colleen has now turned to teaching Irish Dancing, and is holding weekly beginners lessons for children in Nettleham. The class is held every Wednesday from 5.00 - 6.00pm in the Village Hall.

Link Romania Fundraising I know you’ll be pleased to learn that the total number of shoeboxes received by Link Romania last year was 31,283.

Isn’t that wonderful? So many happy families and so many beaming smiles as a result of the boxes. Thank you all so much once again for sharing.

There has been a change of plan as Margaret and John Willemsen returned to lasi on 11th February and intend to retire at the end of May. They have written saying they’ll be pleased to visit the village in the summer and report on the progress of the Skills Centre.

Although we won’t see them until later in the year, they are both delighted that hats are already being made for this year’s Shoebox Appeal and send their thanks for your many kindnesses.

Funds are still needed for the Skills Centre and to this end we have arranged a Coffee Morning on Monday, 28th February at Church View from 10.00 - 12.00. All the usual stalls, Quiz Sheets @ £1.00 each, raffle, etc, not forgetting our delicious tea or coffee. Please come.

The date of the photograph is unknown, but perhaps one of our readers is a motoring history enthusiast and could deduce the approximate date from the make and model of car.

Bob is clearly very proud of his ‘wheels’ and the car was probably one of the first of the very few to be seen around the village in those days.

New Year’s Day

W

ell over 30 stout-hearted folk, some accompanied by their dogs, took up the invitation to take part in the annual New Year’s Day walk around the village.

Meeting at 10.30am on the Green, they were looking forward to walking off some of those extra calories they had added during the indulgences of the Christmas holiday period!

The weather was kind this year - although it was dull and overcast, at least it was dry and fairly mild for the time of year.

This year, a couple from Suffolk, Ken and Audrey Owen, joined the walkers and later they emailed to say what a wonderful time they had enjoyed in the village over the New Year holiday period. They can just be seen peeping under and to the right of the village sign. Here’s what they said: “As frequent visitors to Nettleham we decided to spend our New Year in our favourite spot. What a great decision it turned out to be - we had a wonderful time.

set off to the Village Green to meet our fellow walkers. New Year’s greetings were exchanged between all, as we waited in anticipation for the group to grow - and grow it certainly did!

What a happy, mixed bunch we were - from babes in arms, experienced walkers, and well-worn boots to new Christmas ones, and not forgetting the four-legged friends all eager to start.

We would like to thank our leader (sorry we don’t know your name) for giving up her morning and arranging the walk and route for us all.

What a happy, friendly community you have in Nettleham - we feel privileged to have taken part in just one of your many activities, and look forward very much to our next visit in April.

It is so relaxing to park the car on arrival, leave it for a week and walk everywhere.

Everything is so convenienent and the shops and pubs so friendly - well who could want for more?

As keen walkers, we find the footpaths well marked and maintained, and have walked to many of the villages in the area.

Needles & Hooks Tsunami Appeal The Tsunami disaster affected us all in many different ways and most of us will have donated monies to the international appeal.

However, as time goes by more news and events will fill our newspapers and television and the disaster put to the back of our minds.

I felt helpless and wanted to do more than just give money and seeing the desperation in the faces of the children left behind was overwhelming. Whilst out walking the dog, an idea came to me where, using my particular passion for knitting and crocheting, I thought I could do something more.

The initial idea was to make small soft tactile toys and comfort blankets and send them to the children in Sri Lanka through Save the Children. I did some research in Lincoln and visited shops and businesses dealing in the crafts.

I also visited the Lincolnshire Echo and spoke to a reporter about the idea. He thought it was great and promised to put an article in the paper very soon.

I needed to speak with Save the Children as I hadn’t yet put the idea to them!!

Angela Hanrahan, of Save the Children, who covers the East Midlands area, was most helpful and encouraging.

However, she told me that although the idea was good, it was money that was needed more than anything at this time.

So I rethought the idea and came up with Needles & Hooks. This covered a wider range of crafts than just knitting, and included crafts that used either a needle or a hook – knitting, crocheting, embroidery, tapestry, quilting, appliqué, even making a rug!

I contacted Angela with the updated idea and we both felt this was much

better. An article appeared in the Lincolnshire Echo on 12th January.

To date I have received 10 replies from ladies in the surrounding villages, all with different interests in crafts. There are flyers in shops (Boyes), Needles ’n’ Crafts (Sincil Street), Needlecraft (Clasketgate) and Linda (in the Market). Saga FM called me for an interview, Lincolnshire Show has already been booked and I’m hoping to participate at the Nettleham Carnival in the summer.

The first of four special articles by Roger White looking at aspects of Estate Planning (See advertisement in Nettleham Now 2005 page 6) It is currently estimated that around 70% of the population do not have a will. There may be many reasons why people choose not to put their affairs in order - it seems to be one of those things that we all know we should do, but never get around to actually doing.

In the four editions of Nettleham News in 2005, a series of special articles will provide an insight into specific areas of estate planning - the first topic being a general overview of some possible consequences of not making a will.

The law sets out clear rules for what happens to your estate if you should die without a will. Passing away without a will is known in legal terms as dying intestate and the rules that govern such circumstances are known as the law of intestacy. There are strict rules in place in deciding how a deceased estate is distributed.

■ Where there are no children, parents, brothers, sisters, nephews or nieces, the spouse inherits everything.

■ If there are children, the spouse takes the personal chattels (car, furniture, clothing, etc) and £125,000 and INCOME ONLY from half the residue (the balance) the children are entitled to half the residue when they are 18 (or if they marry before that age)

plus the remaining half of the residue on the death of the surviving parent.

■ If there are no children but there are parents, brothers, sisters, nephews or nieces, then the spouse takes the chattels, plus £200,000, plus half the residue. The remaining half of the residue then passes to various relatives, first the deceased parents, if either are still alive, but if not, then to brothers and sisters and then onto nieces and nephews.

As you can see, under the laws of intestacy it does appear that the surviving spouse could be treated harshly. Sadly, this is a situation that happens quite frequently, but could be easily prevented with a little forethought.

Failure to make a will leaves much to chance and denies the deceased the opportunity of naming beneficiaries and executors of their choice, as well as nominating guardians for any children. Not leaving your affairs in order normally increases the distress felt by loved ones who are left behind. In short, it could be true to say that making a will should be viewed as a must, not an option.

The next feature will focus on the issue of long term care and the steps that can be taken to avoid having to possibly sell your property to pay for it.

Calling All St John Ambulance Cadets What is it?

Connexions Lincolnshire and Rutland is a support service for young people that is designed and delivered in a way which meets their individual needs.

At the heart of the service is a Connexions Personal Adviser network that listens, gives advice, information, support and practical help on a range of teenage topics, including careers, relationships, health, etc.

What Does It Do? It offers the opportunity for young people to get the best help and advice they need at any given time. It is a confidential service that encourages young people to get involved and shape the way the service is delivered. There is no passing from pillar to post - a Connexions Personal Adviser will listen to the needs of young people and respond when necessary to draw in a network of support from partnership organisations.

How Does It Work?

The Connexions Service works by bringing together all the services supporting young peoples needs during their teenage years.

All young people are provided with a Connexions Personal Adviser who will assess their individual needs and broker access to specialist services if necessary.

This could be expert careers guidance, health advice, finance or support with finding a job. Connexions Personal Advisers maintain contact with young people for as long as they are needed to ensure that everything is working satisfactorily and effectively.

Voice your choice and control your pIanner In Year 9 you can start making choices about which subjects to take and which subjects to drop. There may be some ‘new’ subjects you could choose that you’ve never tried before.

Some schools run sample lessons in these new subjects so you can try them out. Some colleges offer students the opportunity to try vocational courses alongside the academic subjects studied in school. Explore all your options first and give them all a try.

Some subjects you will have to carry on doing, but the rest of your planner will be up to you to decide. But before you drop every subject you don’t like, just take some time to think about what you want to do when you leave school. You don’t want to drop a subject now to find out later that you need it to get into your chosen career!

DANGER Defend A Northern Green Environmental Rim WLDC LOCAL PLAN REPRESENTATIONS DEVELOPMENT & PUBLIC INQUIRY

W

e have previously expressed our organisation’s concern regarding any further development around Nettleham, so have been taking particular interest in the coming Public Inquiry, which will begin on Tuesday 8 February at Hemswell Court.

This Public Inquiry has been set up to enable the “Inspector” to adjudicate on the representations (over 2,000) which have been lodged against the West Lindsey District Council Local Plan.

You will have seen those representations that primarily affect Nettleham in the winter edition of Nettleham News.

To establish what the representations meant and the case being made by them, we paid a visit to the WLDC offices in Gainsborough, on 23 November 2004, where we met Mrs Paula Clelland, the Programme Officer for the Inquiry, who provided us with sight of the relevant documents.

We also attended a pre-enquiry meeting held by the Inspector on 4 November 2004, which enabled us to perhaps more clearly understand the procedures that will be followed (well sort of!).

Most of the representations that we scrutinised were made by lawyers on behalf

of their clients (builders and potential developers) and therefore rather full of legalese and repeated references to Structure Plans, etc, which does not make for interesting reading!

However, we obtained a list of organisations which will be represented at the Inquiry and will be allowed to speak according to a predetermined timetable. A number of representations will rely only on written submissions.

Dixon Hogg and the Police Authority will be represented at the Inquiry on the Thursday 3 March at 2pm (ref 11917/8 and ref 11198 in winter 2004 Nettleham News).

We were pleased to note that the Parish Council has now decided to support WLDC with a submission relating to the need to retain the Police Authority land as a sportsfield, because of the demand for more facilities at Mulsanne, where they are unable to expand.

We have also been in regular contact with the Police Authority to try and obtain more information on their proposals, and with this in mind we have made a request for additional data under the Freedom of Information Act, which came into effect on 1 January 2005. (They will respond within 20 working days).

We subsequently learned from Mrs Clelland that the Police Authority had made a further submission, just prior to the deadline in December 04, so we again arranged to visit the WLDC offices at Spital Terrace, Gainsborough, on Wednesday 26 January 2005, to see the documents.

We also had the opportunity to see a sample of the responses made by Browne Jacobson (the consultants acting for West Lindsey District Council) which included the Parish Council’s submission. As a result of our visit, we decided to write to the Inspector to set out for him the actual facilities and services that are provided in Nettleham and not those imagined by developers.

We have also responded to Planning Application M04/P/1460 - Rural Enterprise Park, Deepdale Lane and asked that the decision be deferred until the results of the Inquiry are known.

Parkinson’s Disease Society (Lincoln Branch)

I

n 1817, the London doctor, Dr James Parkinson, first studied a condition which eventually took his name. His work is still recognised globally as the classic description of Parkinson’s.

Mali Jenkins, whose sister had Parkinson’s, founded the Parkinson’s Disease Society in 1969. The Society began as an information resource and as a means of putting people in touch with others in a similar position.

From its early beginnings it has grown to become a major medical charity, seeking to serve anyone who needs it. Mutual support has always been a key activity and the Society has encouraged the development of local support through a network of branches.

A lady carers group meets regularly and we have regular pub lunches in and around Lincoln.

Margaret, our Community Support Worker, is available to assist PD people and their carer’s family and friends to understand and deal with the day-to-day needs of living with Parkinson’s.

Contact Margaret on: 01522 794432 It is often assumed that only elderly people develop Parkinson’s. This is not true and nationally, and locally here in Lincoln in 2005, we are forming a social group and other activities for the under 55 year olds.

Such a branch began in the mid 1980s in the Lincoln district. It was inaugurated in 1990 and continues to provide support and information, improve quality of life and to raise funds for research and local welfare.

Parkinson’s affects people in different ways.

One of our younger members has a particular problem when his medication is not working as well as it might. Some people assume that he is drunk and instead of enquiring if he needs help, they sneer at him. One young man, who does not live in this area, had printed for himself T-shirts stating that “No I am not Drunk” on one side and “I have Parkinson’s” on the other!

Branch meetings are held on the second Monday of the month. Carpet bowls takes place at the Grandstand Community Centre on Tuesday afternoon, with tea and biscuits.

Some areas in this country have a Parkinson’s specialist nurse, whose role includes review of medication and providing advice on practical matters that relate to living with Parkinson’s.

Specialist nurses are an economically good move on the part of Health Trusts that have appointed them. Those people who benefit from the care of these nurses are fortunate indeed.

We in Lincoln have, for a number of years, tried to persuade those who hold the purse strings that such an appointment would benefit everyone.

We have failed so far.

In Autumn of 2004, an officer from the Parkinson’s Disease Society met with a cross-section of General Practitioners from Lincoln and district, who felt that the appointment of a specialist nurse is of paramount importance.

April 11th - 17th 2005, is Parkinson’s Awareness Week and is held at this time to coincide with James Parkinson’s birthday.

What a wonderful present it would be if we were promised a specialist nurse, or two, by 2006!

STAR ENERGY GAS STORAGE PROPOSALS UPDATE tar Energy have withdrawn their plans for wind turbines, but their plans to use the Welton oil field as an underground gas storage facility are still very much on track. Their application will be considered by Lincolnshire County Council’s Planning Committee, at a special meeting on 18 March 2005*.

Star Energy own and operate six oil fields in the area around Welton. They intend to: ■ Construct a gas pipeline from Holton-cum-Beckering to the Reepham Gathering Centre ■ Use two of the oil fields (Welton and Scampton North) to store up to 15 billion cubic feet of gas.

■ Build gas processing facilities at the Reepham Gathering Centre ■ At a later date they plan to build a pipeline to connect the two fields The use of an onshore oil field for underground gas storage has not been tried before in the UK. West Lindsey District Councillors Meg Davidson, Sue Rawlins and Stuart Curtis, who represent the wards in the immediate vicinity of the Welton oil field, have for the past year been working to find out the facts and alert the County Council and other agencies of the risks the gas storage proposals could pose to local residents.

Meg Davidson, along with West Lindsey’s Head of Planning Services, represented WLDC last October at an international conference in Aberdeen on Underground Gas Storage in the UK. This was very informative, although not reassuring as far as safety issues are concerned.

Two things quickly became clear: there is potential for oil companies to make huge amounts of money from underground gas storage and there are no specific safety rules regulating underground gas storage onshore as opposed to offshore. Unfortunately, such regulations tend to be introduced after a disaster has occurred!

There were three speakers from the USA, the country with by far the greatest experience of using depleted oil and gas fields for gas storage. There have been a number of major accidents in the USA caused by gas leaks from oil wells and gas migration (gas emerging some miles from the storage site). The Americans would not recommend siting a gas storage facility near a residential area.

Sudbrooke and Scothern sit on top of the Welton oil field, which is the first proposed gas storage area. The oil and gas-processing site is close to Reepham and the A158. A major accident could therefore affect a large number of people. For example, an explosion at an underground gas storage facility in Texas in 2004 resulted in the closure of roads and evacuation of all residents within a 3 mile radius for nearly two weeks.

A comparable incident at the Reepham Gathering Centre could lead to the evacuation of Nettleham along with Sudbrooke, Scothern, Reepham, Cherry Willingham, Langworth, Fiskerton, parts of Washingborough and Lincoln.

15 billion cubic feet of gas is a massive quantity. It inevitably brings a risk of fire, explosion, blow-out and leaks. Clearly there will be safety precautions and plans in place, but there are a number of particular concerns. These include: 43

■ Presence of hydrogen sulphide (which is extremely toxic) and other harmful substances in the gas ■ Increased pressure in the oil field leading to greater strain on wellheads and well bores ■ The fact that Star Energy is a small company, compared to the likes of BP and Shell, and has no previous experience of operating an underground gas storage facility The Health and Safety Executive so far appear to accept the claims Star Energy made in their community newsletters last year. These stated that storing gas in a depleted oil field is no big deal: it is simply a case of putting gas into rock where gas occurred naturally and that as long as the pressure of the oilfield is increased to no higher than its original level, this should be safe.

There is another point of view which suggests that the proposed gas storage facility could be far from safe.

“The conversion of existing oil fields to gas storage facilities involves a high degree of risk …old well bores could leak and/or result in explosion when under the levels of pressure demanded of a gas storage facility.”

Who said this? Star Energy in their Admission Document to the Stock Exchange in May 2004! In this document they were under a legal obligation to declare to potential investors all the known risks.

It seems that the Stock Exchange was given more accurate information than local residents. The West Lindsey councillors believe that injecting gas at high pressure into a “sour” oil field in a populated area poses unacceptable risks and they are urging the County Council to reject Star Energy’s application.

NETTLEHAM ART GROUPS An Art Group was formed in the village in September 2004.

A number of local people who had been attending Art Classes at Mulsanne Park Pavilion had felt for some time that it would be beneficial to meet together on a weekly basis to pursue their interest in painting doing what they wanted, at their own pace.

Thirteen attended the first group meeting held in the Old School on the morning of Tuesday 14th September, and this soon increased to 16 - the maximum number that can be comfortably accommodated in the small hall there.

The Art Group has been so popular and successful that a second group has been formed, meeting for the first time on the morning of Wednesday 5th January, again in the Old School.

At present 12 attend this group, so there are a few places available if anyone wishes to join. A waiting list will be started if necessary.

There is no formal tuition at the weekly meetings, although occasional demonstrations by art tutors may be arranged in the future. The Group will develop in the way its members wish it to develop. They are all very supportive of each other, offering constructive criticism and helpful suggestions.

Attendances have been very high and some excellent work has been produced. The Group is planning to hold an exhibition of their work in the summer, probably during the weekend of Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July 2005.

Further details of this new event, confirming the date and venue, will be given in the summer edition of Nettleham News, to be published and distributed later this year in the first week of June.

It’s all change at Nettleham Timeout Club!

We opened the Club in November 2003 and since then we have experienced rapid growth.

Our Co-ordinator, Emma Stace, has decided the time is right for her to take up a new opportunity, enabling her to move back to her home town of Milton Keynes. She has accepted the position of Regional Childcare Co-ordinator for CATZ - (Children’s After School Time Zones). It will involve travelling around the country and being in charge of the overall running of clubs in lots of different regions. Emma will really miss the Timeout children so be prepared for the big Farewell Party!

The sell-out event was organised in just two weeks by Helen & Jeremy Radcliffe and Andy & Sarah Seamer and raised £788.07 for the Tsunami DEC appeal.

Tag Rugby at Nettleham Tag Rugby is a fast-moving, non-contact invasion game, suitable for boys and girls to play together. It’s safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and vibrance of the sport, has meant that mini-tag is now the RFU’s official version of rugby for under 7s and under 8s.

The interchangeable nature of possession, leading to rapid switching from attack to defence, means that a range of skills is cultivated and developed. Co-operation, integration and determination, along with individual and collective responsibility, are all key elements in the game of mini-tag.

Andy Fuller, the Lincolnshire Rugby Coach, along with Jane Banham of Cherry Willingham Community School Sports College, have been teaching the Key Stage 2 children the skills associated with Tag Rugby, leading into mini games.

The children all thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and they truly looked like rugby players at the end of each session - very wet and muddy!

NETTLEHAM BOWLS CLUB

T

he Chairman, President and Committee would like to thank Nettleham News for the article published in the Spring 2004 edition which advertised our Open Day in May 2004 - it was an outstanding success and led to seven new members joining the Nettleham Bowls club.

The bowling year heralded more success, with two league teams winning promotion and 70 members enjoying a marvellous annual dinner at Hemswell Cliff, with Judy Theobald from Lincolnshire Life magazine as guest speaker.

The 2005 season commences on the 23rd April. The Open Day this year is on Sunday 8th May at 2.00pm. Anyone interested in taking up the sport is invited to attend and will be made most welcome. Do come along in at shoes or trainers, with no heel, we will provide the bowls and perhaps someone will make a cup of tea! Give it a try, it could become your favourite pastime!

NETTLEHAM VILLAGE HALL

Latest update on the modernisation of the Village Hall After completing a survey of local residents and hall users on future needs and usage, the Village Hall Committee have now put together the Business Plan which is needed when applying for grants.

We have received many letters of support and ideas from the user groups, and these have been a vital part of the plan.

The most urgent improvements to the building are: to convert the current flat roof into a pitched one, make the lounge a separate room, with a soundproof door to the main hall to allow extra usage; provide disabled access to the building and also a baby-changing facility; refurbish the lounge, kitchen and bar area, with a new entrance to the lounge; install new main entrance doors and windows.

I would like to thank the local organisations and all those who have given their help, including the valuable financial support received from the annual Nettleham Carnival over the years.

The Committee is also seeking to employ a handyman (or woman!) a few hours a week for general maintenance and cover for when the cleaner is away on leave and holidays.

New members would be most welcome for the Village Hall Committee and a secretary is still required (it is hoped someone may come forward at the AGM on 21 February 2005). The duties of the secretary should only take a couple of hours or less per week.

If anyone is interested in becoming a Committee member or filling the above position, do please contact me.

A grant application has already been completed and submitted to the County Council and West Lindsey District Council and we should know by late March if it has been successful.

The Community Lottery Fund grant forms are almost complete after months of work and we are hopeful that it will provide the main source of our finance.

NETTLEHAM CARNIVAL 2005 The photographs of last year’s Carnival, (and especially the captions) which appeared on the centre pages of the autumn 2004 edition of Nettleham News, were so good, that maybe the text accompanying them was missed.

Anyway, the gist of it was that the Carnival was a success again, and raised £2,650, and that if anyone out there was interested in taking part in the organising, we would, of course, be delighted to hear from them.

It’s not very time consuming - we meet once a month in one of the Nettleham pubs, and plan the event; everyone’s ideas, a few telephone calls, a bit of organising and one day of fairly intense effort. That’s it.

This year’s Carnival will take place on Saturday 9th July, and we confidently expect it to be every bit as good as it has been in previous years.

There will be the things you have seen before and, we hope, new things to attract you. The funds raised will go in part to the Village Hall Restoration Fund, and also to a local charity, which this year is Helping Hands, a charity which gives help and support to children and young adults aged up to 25 years old, who have a terminal illness or disability, as well as their family by means of financial support (see below).

Last year we had great support from the village for people to run the stalls, and it was a nice day, which, by some means, we always manage to get.

eaders may recall me writing after Christmas 2003, when Rachael and David Tollerton of Highfields raised £100 for Lincoln Lions, which was then donated to Netteham First Responders by the Club.

This year, Rachael and Dave have raised the magnificent sum of £250, through decorating their home with Christmas lighting and the Club has agreed to Rachael and Dave’s request for the money to be sent this year to the Tsunami Disaster Fund, which I am sure the residents of Nettleham will wholeheartedly support.

In doing so, Lincoln Lions have decided to double the sum raised to £500 and will be making the donation by means of “Gift in Aid” which will yield an additional £140 for the Disaster Fund.

This has been a truly excellent community response by all those who donated to Rachael and Dave’s initiative and I would like to thank everyone involved, particularly the Tollerton family.

The terrible earthquake in Asia has meant a change of direction for the monies raised, but I am sure that all those who have contributed will be in favour of the donation to the Disaster Fund.

COMPETITION RULES

1 The Nettleham News Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed flowering stems, containing a total of between five and ten stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. Please note that it is two different KINDS of plants. Two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds.

1 The Nettleham News Top Tray class is for a collection of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of eight. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets: Carrots (3), Cauliflowers (2), Onions (3), Parsnips (3), Peas (6 pods), Potatoes (3), Runner Beans (6 pods), Tomatoes (6). Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points.

This is split into three sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour; 7 points for condition; 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark given will therefore be out of a total of 60.

2 The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points for the colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal rules used for other classes.

3 Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only; no seed heads or berries will be allowed.

4 The vase can be any shape or size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself.

5 No accessories whatsoever such as bows and additional foliage will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem, is allowed. Packing material including Oasis - to keep the stems in place is allowed.

2 All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. The vegetables must be displayed within an area measuring 45cm by 60 cm (18" x 14"), without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 45cm by 60cm (18" x 24") can be used to display the vegetables, or the area can simply be marked on the staging. Where a tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 45cm by 60cm (18" x 24").

3 A black cloth is permitted, and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand, rings, etc, will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied, or whipped using raffia or string.

6 The winner of the Nettleham News Top Vase class will receive the Top Vase Gold award plus £10.

The runner-up will receive the Silver award and the third place will receive the Bronze award.

4 The winner of the Nettleham News Top Tray class will receive the Gold Award plus £10. The runner-up will receive the Silver Award and the third place will receive the Bronze Award.

✿ Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant.

✿ Carrots and parsnips must have foliage trimmed back to 7.5 cm (3").

✿ The different kinds of plants should be taken from different genera. For instance, Pinks, Carnations and Sweet William (which are all dianthus) would not be classed as different kinds.

✿ Peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk attached.

✿ Only fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. No dried or silk flowers are allowed. ✿ A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers, and which is taller than it is wide at its widest point. ✿ The Nettleham News Top Vase class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows. ✿ Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that the entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors.

✿ Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces (the green flower bud case). ✿ Judges may handle exhibits, open pods, etc, to check for quality. ✿ The tray, board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way at all - such as cutting holes in which to stand onions. ✿ Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Tray class, remembering that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors. ✿ The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors’ cards.

✿ Judges and exhibitors should note that the display has to be viewed all round. ✿ The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors’ cards.

RB Camera Club in Nettleham The Ruston Bucyrus Camera Club was formed on Thursday, 12 April 1956, for employees of Ruston Bucyrus Limited who were interested in photography, and was affiliated to Ruston Bucyrus Sports Association (RBSA).

The Club began meeting on the third Thursday of the month in the works’ projection room, the meetings becoming more frequent over the years as cameras became more readily available and the Club became more successful.

As a result of changing work shift patterns, it became necessary to change the club night to a Friday evening in 1966. On 19 March 1971, the Club moved to 12 Clasketgate, Lincoln. The RBSA was dissolved on 30 September 1983 and the Ruston Bucyrus Camera Club emerged as a totally independent entity.

In 1984, the name of the Club changed to RB Camera Club and it became free to enrol members outside Ruston Bucyrus, including Jack and Joyce Snowden and Mike Hamblett, who joined RB when the Nettleham Police Camera Club closed just over 18 years ago.

On 14 June 2002, RB Camera Club (Lincoln) moved to new premises at 5 Silver Street, Lincoln and in February 2004 to Nettleham Village Hall.

In the beginning, members were involved in chemical developing and darkroom work, with no commercial prints allowed in competitions, although it was acceptable practice to show commercially produced slides. Times have moved on and most of the members are now into digital photography, even if they continue to use film cameras. Both commercial and home produced work is now acceptable.

Equipment has moved on and RB have recently acquired a new slide projector, laptop, digital projector and amplifier with lottery money.

If you’ve been lucky enough to receive a digital camera for Christmas and want to know how to use it, or would like to be shown how to manipulate your photographs in Photoshop, whether you’re just a beginner or an advanced worker, RB will be holding workshops using the equipment purchased with Lottery Grant monies in 2005.

RB Camera Club (Lincoln) is an active member of the Lincolnshire Photographic Association and the North & East Midlands Photographic Federation. The First Nettleham Heritage Day - A Great Success!

27 January 1901 Harry Baines, Albert Straw, Albert Dowman, Charles Atkin, Albert Newton, J Christian and D Richardson each received two strokes (cane) for snow-balling the new teacher on the way home.

he first Nettleham Heritage Day took place on Saturday 15 January 2005 in All Saints Church, from 10.00am to 4.00pm and exceeded all expectations. Many thanks to all those whose participation, efforts and enthusiasm made this first event for the Nettleham Heritage Association such a great success.

Despite the dull, dreary weather, there was a constant flow of visitors to the church throughout the day (estimated to be between 400 and 500), many bringing items of interest for recording and identification, others simply out of curiosity as to what it was all about.

For anyone with even a passing interest in the story of our village, this was a real treat!

There were displays from a number of different organisations involved with local history and archeology, including the Lincolnshire Archives, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the Society for Lincolnshire History & Archeology, together with historical documents and photographs from the village schools.

The latter were the subject of particular interest (and not a little amusement) as visitors looked through the numerous photographs and perhaps recognised themselves, their childhood friends, or their own children, either in official class photographs, in costume in past Nativity plays, or energetically participating in Sports Days of long ago.

The school Punishment Book, recording the misdemeanours and subsequent retribution meted out to pupils from the beginning of the twentieth century, revealed a very different disciplinary regime to today.

Within its pages were many familiar village names, amongst which was that of a well-known and respected local Parish Councillor (who shall remain nameless!) who was taken to task for “disobedience” and “laziness”. Fortunately, this rather unpromising start was subsequently abandoned in favour of better behaviour!

To give readers of the magazine a flavour of the contents of the book, here are a selection from the many handwritten entries.

19 November 1902 S Atkin and Thomas Dowman were quarrelling in the playground and when the schoolteacher tried to intervene S Atkin kicked the Master who promptly boxed his ears (you don’t often hear that expression these days!). The Master decided to give each boy a stroke of the cane, but Dowman refused to hold out his hand and started kicking out, so received a thrashing on the back instead. After this, the two boys held out their hands for one stroke each, as first requested.

27 November 1903 George Fisher shouted at teacher and was caned on hand and across shoulders. NB this boy had another thrashing at home for the same offence.

27 June 1924 W East for insulting Miss D Coulson (Infant School Teacher): 6 cuts* on hand.

6 February 1925 Harold Fields for asking girl prefect how to do a sum in the weekly test: 4 cuts on hand.

7 November 1930 George Ed Smith for very untidy exercise books: succession of cuts on buttock.

2 October 1935 Harry Crumpstone disobedience: one stroke on left hand.

10 July 1941 R Smith grinning: two strokes 7 July 1955 Ian Southward for asking girl prefect how to do a sum continued disobedience: 4 strokes on buttocks.

These pitiful entries continue page after page, year after year, listing the savage punishments regularly handed out to pupils for relatively minor offences.

The same names occur frequently, indicating that either corporal punishment was not an effective deterrent against misbehaviour, or perhaps the pupils’ (mostly boys) hands and behinds eventually became hardened against this form of punishment! * Cut was a term used for a period of time in the book to denote a stroke of the cane - an evocative word (as I know only too well from personal experience!) which goes some way in describing the red weal, throbbing pain and eventual pins-and-needles sensation, which follows the swift application of a bamboo cane across the palm of the hand (or elsewhere, according to the preference of the individual teacher!).

The First Nettleham Heritage Day - A Great Success!

Brian Scott, of 18 The Crescent, brought in an old framed photograph of his grandfather George William Scott, who worked for many years at Stevenson’s Farm in the village (now Ashtree Farm), he being responsible for the horses, which were the motive power in those days, long before tractors became a common sight on the agricultural scene.

The photograph was actually taken at what used to be Pages Farm on Sudbrooke Lane, where he was working at the time.

Brian then went on to recount one of those fascinating personal stories, told to him by his father, which helps so greatly in bringing those past days to life again.

Visitors brought all kinds of memorabilia with them on the day, from Bronze Age spearheads, family photo albums, coins dug up in gardens, sherds of ancient pottery, newspaper cuttings, family histories, old postcards and even an exquisite 6,000-year old neolithic stone axehead, fished out of a shopping bag!

Apparently, the three horses in the photograph were known as Prince, Blossom and Punch.

Prince was his firm favourite, but the farmer, Mr Stevenson, sold him to Liverpool Corporation to work on the docks. However, no-one was able to handle him - he just wouldn’t have the shafts fitted to him, so they sent him back and Grandad had to collect him from the railway station at Lincoln and walk him back to Nettleham where, once again, he settled back happily into ploughing the land!

This episode took place somewhere around 1930 and some years later, when the farmer decided to get a tractor, his Grandad was given the opportunity to drive it, but turned it down because you couldn’t tell it “Whoa!”

Brian’s father has since agreed to be interviewed about his childhood in the village and we hope to bring you some of these memories, perhaps accompanied by more old photographs.

A Follow-up Day will take place at the Junior School on Saturday 26 February 2005 and it is anticipated that many folk will again come to see what is going on, and discover something about the items brought along to the original Heritage Day in January.

The event is too late to be reported in this magazine before going to press, so a full report will appear in the summer edition, due out in the first week of June.

There will also be information about the very first Field Walk in search of historic artefacts, planned to take place in fields near the village later in the year. Make sure you don’t miss this one - it promises to be an exciting day!

The beautiful Neolithic stone axe-head found in The Rookery and brought in by Mrs Hesketh

Found in the The Rookery many years ago by Mrs Hesketh, during the demolition of a cottage, this ancient piece was stunning - around six inches in length and dark greenish-grey in colour, it had been carefully and lovingly worked until it was satin smooth.

I held it in my hands - it was truly awesome to think that this object had survived for so long and in as pristine condition as the day it was finished around 4,000BC! Seemingly, it had been little or never used for the purpose for which it had originally been made - there must be a fascinating story why, having evidently spent so many hours patiently fashioning this tool, it had never been used. Had it been lost? Or perhaps it was a ritual offering to a water divinity and had been carefully placed into a lake which was there at the time? We shall probably never know.

Golden Arrows!

A reader has kindly sent in these two photographs of Nettleham Darts teams of yesteryear perhaps you recognise yourself, friends or relatives in the pictures.

The smiling ladies in this photograph are members of the Black Horse Ladies Darts Team believed to have been taken in the early 1960s It appears they have recently been victorious in a league or match from the way they proudly hold the trophy!
