Important Updates

Parking

I sincerely hope you are all finding the new Nettleham Now publication useful (you should have received a free copy along with the spring edition of the magazine).

By all accounts it has been a huge success I have received numerous compliments from residents, who say that they keep it by the telephone and find it very useful in sourcing information about local businesses, services and amenities.

Many thanks to all the local businesses who placed advertisements in the publication and sincere thanks once again to the Nettleham News distribution team who gladly and willingly took on the delivery of this additional publication. I’m very pleased to be able to tell you that I have been able to donate £200 to a local charity representing around £5 each for every distributor in recognition of their efforts.

Well done indeed to all of you!

The charity which I decided should benefit from this first donation is Sense, which, although a national charity, provides a wide range of services in our county through the Sense East Outreach office located in the Hammond Centre in East Street.

Earlier this year the charity was the victim of a callous robbery in the village when, during two break-ins on two consecutive days, they lost some valuable items of electronic equipment and the office was ransacked. The equipment to date has not been recovered and I thought this donation would go some way in helping with its replacement and show the sincere concern of the village that this crime should happen in the heart of our village community.

Sense is the charity for deafblind and rubella victims and fulfils a vital role in helping both adults and children with this disability, but more about them on pages 22-23.

Please may I ask all local businesses, clubs, societies, organisations, etc, to let me know of any changes in the details which appear within their advertisements or listings in Nettleham Now. In order for the publication to remain right up to date, it is absolutely vital that any changes are notified to me, so that I can update it accordingly for next year.

It only takes a couple of minutes on the telephone (please leave a message if I happen to be out), fax, email or simply a note through the door. I have a master copy in which all changes are recorded and unless I am notified, the same information which appeared this year will be repeated in the new 2005 edition. I know it’s early days yet, but do it as soon as you become aware of any changes - if you put it off you will surely forget!

Yes...again!!! A number of residents have commented on the thoughtless parking which regularly occurs in the village, notably around the Green where vehicle wheels mount the kerb and encroach onto the grass, turning it into a muddy mess.

Cash Prize to be Won!

Firstly, my apologies to Nettleham Wine Circle - in the last edition of the magazine the date of their meetings was given as the third Wednesday every month. This should have been the fourth Wednesday in every month at Nettleham Bowls Club, 7.30pm.

The winner of the Crossword Competition in the spring edition is announced on page 19. As many of you will already know, the compiler of our Prize Crosswords, Rev Eric Burton, sadly lost his wife Joy earlier in the year, so there is no crossword in this summer edition.

However, I have devised something a little different for you to try this time called the Nettleham Quest (centre pages) - a series of clues around the centre of the village with a £10.00 prize for the first correct entry to be drawn. So go on, give it a try - I expect to see you all out there scratching your heads!

I shall compile a crossword for the next edition for those of you who are addicted to them - but it might be a little more difficult than usual!

The winner of the Limerick competition in the last issue will be announced in the autumn edition (see page 19).

The same also occurs in other locations in the village where vehicle wheels cause the erosion and deterioration of grass verges.

Some vehicles are also parked with their wheels on pavements, causing unnecessary obstruction to pedestrians, particularly those with children and pushchairs.

Parish Council News Gas Pipeline

Flower Planters

The Parish Council has written to the Government offices for the East Midlands expressing concern over the proposed gas pipeline and gas storage under Nettleham, Sudbrooke and Welton and the proposed wind turbines that will be used to pump the gas. A letter has been received which did not deal sufficiently with the issues raised and the Clerk is still pressing for more information.

The planters around the village have been greatly admired and it has been decided to add more.

The current plan is to place 3 free standing planters along the side of the Co-op by Vicarage Lane. The Co-op has kindly offered to contribute towards the cost.

Village Sign The current village sign is starting to seriously deteriorate with the wood structure rotting, so action has to be taken. The design is still considered good and so the new sign will to all intents look the same, but the materials used in its construction will be longer lasting, eg cast aluminium or rigid Polyurethane. It is intended that passers-by will not notice any difference.

The Women’s Institute have agreed to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of the new sign.

Mulsanne and Sports Facilities a) Tennis Club Lease The Tennis club has approached the council to give it some security of tenure by providing a lease to enable the club to apply for various grants to improve the facilities. This idea has been agreed in principle by the council, subject to details being satisfactorily finalised. b) Sports Pavilion renovations will be commencing in order to bring it up to the standard of the Old School. This is being funded from council reserves which had been put aside for this matter c) Questions have been raised as to whether the Police sports field was available for the Council to purchase and use as a supplementary sports field for Mulsanne. At this time the field is not available.

Bishops Palace Site A plan, which has been the subject of much hard work over the past 4 years, was presented to the Council by John Blakely. The proposal is for the development of medieval gardens on the site of the Old Bishops Palace. The gardens will be in keeping with the original landscape and the proposal, in principle, was unanimously supported by the council. (See page 21 for more news about this community project).

Bulb Planting A project to take advantage of a bulk purchase of bulbs and plant them in August around the village has been approved. This could be a project appropriate for Grapevine who has offered groups of young people to participate in specific tasks around the village. It is hoped that the end result will be a riot of colour each spring.

Wild Flower Meadow Unfortunately this project for the establishment of a wild flower meadow in the reserve burial ground has had to be abandoned due to practical difficulties of grass cutting and costs. This was despite much effort being expended to find ways of covering the establishment and maintenance costs.

Appointments Allen Page has taken over responsibility for managing the Old School and has also taken on the duties of administrative officer to the Parish Council, assisting the Clerk. Mr Page’s duties will also encompass the duties of Treasurer. His appointment will also mean that the Parish Council office will be manned regularly and the Council hopes that the office can soon be open to the residents at regular times.

School Safety Zone This is a proposal for All Saints Lane. The scheme will involve the installation of new signing and lines as well as improved pedestrian facilities outside the school and residential home. There will be an advisory 20mph limit and no parking in the zone.

Memorial Seats Seats will be placed in the village in memory of Jack Ranshaw and Clinton Towler. The village currently has over 40 seats, which are greatly appreciated by residents, especially on a pleasant summers day. Questions have been raised about the appropriate height of the seats. Some lower seats are difficult for older residents to get up 5

from, but since there is no standard height, we will have to go by what is available from quality bench makers who supply benches to the Parish.

And Finally There have been comments in the Echo recently that there are much smaller numbers of ducks on the Beck this spring, “has the Parish Council had a cull?” The answer is a clear no. It happens to be spring and the ducks disperse to nest and have their young, (I have had 2 broods wander across my front garden in the past week). The “Please don’t feed the ducks” signs do seem to be working however, as the ducks which have not paired up are not congregating along the stretch of the Beck near the church.

John Evans Nettleham Parish Council

Many Thanks for Long and Dedicated Service At the Annual Parish Meeting in April, Councillor Alf Frith announced that the Parish Council Clerk, David Dubut, has served 25 years in that role.

This is a considerable achievement and we offer our very warmest thanks and congratulations to him. According to Alf, the two previous Parish Clerks clocked up more than 40 years service between them, so David is maintaining a Nettleham tradition of long service!

Another commendable example of long service to the Parish Council is Mrs Chris Myers. She stepped down earlier this year, having assisted the Parish Council Clerk for the past 20 years, typing up the minutes and reports of the Parish Council and its committees and occasionally deputising for the Clerk at meetings. This represents many thousands of words typed and her work, much of it behind the scenes, has been a vital contribution to the smooth running of the Parish Council.

Welcome to Allen Page who has recently started work in the Parish Office. As well as assisting David Dubut, he has taken on the role of caretaker/manager of the Old School.

Why have I received a new card from one issuer and not from my other?

This is probably because your card with the other company has already expired. The issue of the new Chip & PIN cards will be phased in at different times by different issuers.

Will I be able to continue using my old card until the new one arrives?

Yes. Your existing card may be used in exactly the same way as before, and when it expires you will recieve one of the new Chip & PIN cards.

All cards will be gradually replaced over the next two years with new ones which contain a PIN number. It will take this period of time for shops and other retailers to install the new PIN terminals, with the larger shops generally changing first.

Do I have to do anything now?

No. Shortly before your current card expires, your card issuer should contact you with information about the new card and what to do. Some card companies have already sent information out.

When will I receive my new card?

Where can I find out more?

When your current card expires you will automatically receive a new Chip & PIN card from your card company.

Contact your own card issuer and ask them for information, also watch out for news in the media about this anti-fraud initiative.

The Lunch Club has now been running for 22 years, providing the opportunity for many of Nettleham’s senior residents to get together once a week during school term time and socialise over a three-course lunch at the Old School. Ask any of the diners and they will tell you just how much they enjoy coming to the Luncheon Club.

Its continuing success is wholly due to the commitment of our team of volunteer helpers and, more importantly, our cooks - who have no professional experience, just years of practice!

We really do need an additional person who can spare a few hours twice a month to come and help one of our cooks to prepare these meals.

A willing pair of hands (male or female) and a little of your time is all we ask, to bring us up to strength again.

Readers Letters Mrs Sheila Turner 15 Parkside Dear Sir, Despite my cordial verbal explanation given to him some time ago, your correspondent, Mr Charles Shaw, (Readers’ Letters, Page 11, Spring edition 2004) still insists on attributing to me, hostile motives that I simply do not feel, either towards himself, or towards the Sports & Community Association. The contentious issue was discussed as a paper which came not to West Lindsey District Council, but to the County Council’s Planning & Regulation Sub-committee. I was at that time, still County Councillor for Nettleham and was a member of that committee.

The issue under discussion was that of highways and access problems in Poacher’s Meadow, Greenfields and Field Close, Nettleham, in relation to extension proposals and activities at Mulsanne Park Sportsfield. In addition, and in response to residents’ complaints, I commented to the committee on “abuse of Highway” matters, ie the problem of carriageway parking and of visiting supporters relieving themselves on the highway verges near to Mulsanne Park, in Greenfields and Poacher’s Meadow. I pointed out that all this indicated lack of provision of facilities on the field itself.

Enthusiasm for the success of a major event, attracting participants from all over the country, had apparently not been matched by adequate planning for them. Apparently (as explained to me) a toilet facility for visitors had been hired in, but either no one knew of its existence, through lack of signposting or, characteristically of the age in which we now live, the visitors couldn’t be bothered to enquire .

This, with the haphazard multi-parking, proved to be a major problem for nearby residents.

Therefore it was my duty, as their Highways Councillor, to tell the committee so on their behalf. All this demonstrated a need for the Sports’ Association’s enthusiasm and ambition to be matched by adequate planning, as I commented personally to Mr Shaw.

Access was only part of the problem. I have always warmly supported the voluntary work done for such a long time now, by members of the Sports & Community Association in promoting all the forms of play they’ve encouraged at Mulsanne Park. However, such ambitious projects designed to attract hundreds (maybe even thousands) to Mulsanne Park should have been carried out there, with parameters, behavioural problems and consideration for the neighbours always in mind.

DANGER From its name, the DANGER organisation appears to wield a broad brush for issues of concern; but in fact, the acronym stands for “Defend A Northern Green Environmental Rim” (of Lincoln). The remit of the organisation is to ensure care in Planning to the north of the City of Lincoln and to encourage understanding of those statutory planning policies to be found in District Council Local Plans and in the County Council Structure Plan, which might assist residents concerned at the implications for them of a particular planning project “DANGER’s intention is that villages around the northern edge of Lincoln should not become absorbed or ‘coalesced’ by inappropriate development, as suburbs attached to the City.

We don’t welcome urban sprawl.

To this end, we try to ensure our own understanding of the issues, and that local authorities observe and apply their own statutory policies in determining any application for structural development in the green areas, now allocated on statutory plans as protective Green Wedges, between villages and the northern edge of Lincoln. Past experience shows that this doesn’t always happen and that planning authorities are sometimes prepared to contravene their own planning policies!

DANGER, non-statutory and run by residents for residents, tries to provide a sensible arena for information and debate - so that everyone may reach a fair and balanced view of the planning issues involved.

Readers Letters Over the last twenty-four years I have been here in the Pharmacy, Nettleham has progressed and seen many changes - mostly for the better.

But we do, and we offer personal service too - something you won’t find after your long wait in a supermarket or hospital pharmacy queue. Here, rather than being just a number, you are greeted with a smile and, more often than not, by your name.

There are now facilities that make the village almost self-sufficient, with residents able to purchase most of the items they need in their everyday lives, without the need to venture out of Nettleham.

So do please use the local village shops whenever you can - the village would be a poorer place without them and once they are gone, you will no longer have any choice where you shop.

But for these facilities to remain in the village requires the active support of all the people who live here, using the shops at every opportunity, rather than simply a “top-up” between their major shopping trips to the big supermarkets.

Thinking Ahead

These do, of course, have a place in our lives, but if the small shops disappear and we are left with a choice of perhaps four or five big names all over the country, all individuality will be lost forever.

And I mean forever, because once a facility has been lost, it is unlikely to ever return use it or lose it!

Sustained marketing and advertising campaigns by the big supermarkets convince us that they are cheaper, and they do in fact reduce a number of special promotional items almost below cost (by squeezing their suppliers almost to death too!), but these losses are soon made up elsewhere on other premium products.

A small shop, on the other hand, will consistently give you steady service with fair prices all the time and no gimmicks.

As a smaller shop, we endeavour to buy at the very best price we can, in order to sell at the very best price. It has always been our policy to pass on any special offers to our valued customers. Smaller shops cannot compete with the big supermarket chains on promotional items, but we do give them a run for their money on most other items.

Our pharmacy has lost a considerable amount of business to the supermarkets, but although they may offer special promotions on some of the more popular items, do they offer the range which we do or do they offer to get something which they do not have on their shelves?

CUPPA TIME AT ALL SAINTS I am so pleased to be able to tell readers that the Vicar and PCC have agreed that tea/coffee and biscuits may be served in All Saints church on Sunday afternoons, provided there are no services taking place.

This means that anyone out for a walk on a Sunday can call into Church for a free cuppa - tea or coffee - biscuits and a warm welcome.

It is hoped that this hour of friendship can start on Sunday 6th June from 3.00pm 4.00pm and it would be great if this could become a weekly event. To make this happen, helpers are needed. If you would be willing to become part of the team, would you please sign the list at the back of All Saints and I will be in touch.

A Sad Loss On 17 March 2004, we lost our lovely Tizer after a short illness.

Through the pages of Nettleham News we would like to thank all our friends and fellow “doggie walkers” who have been so kind with their expressions of sympathy, flowers and cards. We have been simply overwhelmed and never realised that Tizer was so well known around the village.

As with any pet, they become so much a part of your family and our Tizer was no exception, having been with us for over 12 years.

(This letter, published in edited form here, was originally sent to the Co-op Area Manager for Nettleham, Mr Bojko, by Maurice & Beth Payne in March 2004).

We have been urged to write to you by neighbours and friends regarding tbe lack of foodstuff stock in our local store.

The major area of concern is the apparent deletion from the re-ordering schedules of items that are a regular weekly purchase eg dog meal, clear mints and certain frozen foods - there are many more.

This apparent random deletion of what may be customer’s favourites is frustrating and only leads to us considering buying ALL our purchases at the nearby Safeway or Tesco store. We like to support our local shops, especially where tbe staff are known, friendly, and helpful as they are in the local Co-op store and we feel it is short sighted for the management to make sudden and unannounced changes in the stock and/or staff without seeking the views of their customers.

If you wish to put your case to the residents of the village for economies being made, there is an excellent vehicle in the Nettleham News. Don’t be surprised if they scoff at any of your marketing excuses as they make their way to another nearby supermarket.

(Note: The store has not been the same since Mr Sharp resigned).

He agreed that we could request the local manager to order de-listed items from the larger stock list at the Lincoln City Co-op.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ELECTIONS IN JUNE 2004 This year, all elections in the East Midlands region will be conducted as an all-postal vote.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT POSTAL VOTING Q: What if I do not receive a ballot paper?

This means that all registered electors within the area administered by West Lindsey District Council will be automatically sent ballot papers by post for you to complete and return.

A: If you have not received your ballot paper by 1 June, please call the Elections Office or email them for advice. If you need to request a replacement ballot paper you may need to call in and collect a whole set of new ballot papers, and you will need to bring identification.

This all-postal vote will make it easier and more convenient for you to vote.

Q: What if I am on holiday or away from home when the ballot papers are sent out?

Ballot packs will be delivered to registered electors by the end of May 2004. This pack will include a ballot paper for the European Parliamentary election and a ballot paper for the local elections (if applicable), together with one declaration of identity for all types of election. If you do not receive your ballot papers, you should contact the elections office as soon as possible.

A: If you will not be at your address during the period 1-10 June, you can apply to have your ballot papers sent elsewhere. You will have to fill in and sign a form, which is available by contacting the Elections Office. You will need to submit the form by 17 May 2004.

Once you have voted and completed your declaration of identity, you should post your ballot papers in the envelope provided through a Royal Mail post box.

You will also be able to hand deliver your ballot papers, or receive assistance if you require it, at the following place: Main Reception, The Guildhall, Gainsborough 1-4 June: 9.00am to 4.00pm

Q:I know someone who needs help to complete or return their ballot paper. What should they do?

A: Any elector requiring assistance can attend The Guildhall for assistance and to return their vote. The Elections Office can also give advice and, if required, will personally visit electors to assist them.

generally keep to them, so the complaints I received came out of the blue. The main areas of concern seem to be around the bottom end of Brookfield Avenue and up High Leas to Scothern Road. Several complaints have been received from the residents of Jubilee Court of youths skateboarding in the car park opposite the bungalows. If you are one of those skateboarders, then remember that this is a private car park and the elderly residents don’t want to be harassed or disturbed. Now that the lighter evenings are here, there are more non-residential and non-business areas you can go to. Please use them!!

I’ll begin with an overview of any crime that’s been occurring in the village since the last edition of Nettleham News.

As most of you will no doubt have heard by now during January, and through to the end of February, the village suffered a number of commercial burglaries. The main targets were the Hammond Centre on East Street and the Nettleham Infant School on All Saints Lane.

Also hit was the Nettleham Junior School, the Methodist Church, Nesta’s hairdressers on Vicarage Lane and a number of garden sheds.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to identify any offenders from jobs at the Methodist Church, Nesta’s and the Junior School.

Enquiries are continuing, but if anyone has any information that they feel might be significant then please contact me immediately. There has been some success though in relation to the jobs at the Hammond Centre and the Infant School.

We have managed to retrieve a DNA sample from an item that was left at the scene of the Hammond Centre burglary. The centre lost a large amount of electrical equipment as a result of the burglary. The DNA sample that was retrieved has been matched to a male from Lincoln who, at the time of writing this report, was being investigated by CID. Hopefully by now he will have been charged and dealt with by the courts. The Infant School burglary was captured on the school’s CCTV system. They lost an amount of cash that was to be used for a school trip. The trip went ahead to avoid disappointing the children, but had to be funded from money put aside for other purposes. Two males were caught on the CCTV system and they have both been identified and interviewed.

Again, hopefully, by now both males will have been dealt with by the courts.

The garden sheds that were broken into were all attacked overnight on a single date at the beginning of April. It appears that nothing was taken other than a strimmer from one of the sheds. That was removed from the shed but left in the garden and found the next morning. There have been one or two other minor incidents in the village, but nothing out of the ordinary.

PC 1170 Mark Lassmans Although the incidents I have mentioned are serious they do remain unusual for Nettleham.

It’s been nearly eighteen months since we had anything similar and the recent spate seems to have stopped. Although some of you may be alarmed, don’t be. Nettleham remains one of the safest areas to live in and my colleagues and I are more determined than ever to keep it that way. Remember, these crimes are rare and by remaining vigilant and reporting anything suspicious, we can all help to keep it that way. If any of you are concerned about your sheds I’m not ashamed to put in a quick plug about the shed alarms we sell. We are selling more and more, as people become aware of the need to take precautions and despite inflation they are still at the rock bottom price of £10.00 each.

Brookfield Avenue and High Leas have had some sporadic damage caused to plants and hedges, along with the theft of a garden ornament. The victims of these acts of mindless vandalism are annoyed to say the least and anyone found committing offences will be dealt with accordingly. On The Crescent and East Street there have been walls damaged where tiles have been removed from the top - again, mindless vandalism. The local youths have been advised accordingly, but the times that some of the incidents occurred could suggest that people coming home from pubs and clubs could be responsible. I’m reluctant to start pointing fingers at this stage, but if anyone has any information, then I’d be more than pleased to hear from you.

Did you know they can also be used for protecting other items of value? They can be used on garage doors and in caravans too! You can also strap them to petrol mowers, motor bikes, etc, and as well as an alarm it can be used as a personal attack alarm (although it’s a bit bulky - see the piece on personal attack alarms for more info) and as a door chime which will alert you to someone opening an exterior door.

They come complete with screws, sticky pads, a strap and new batteries (fitted), as well as instructions. Interested? Then contact me for details.

On Tuesday, 13th April 2004, a bike was stolen from outside the Nettleham Co-op at around 5.25pm. The bike was a fairly expensive one and the owner is understandably keen to have it back. The bike is a white mountain bike with the words ‘sewer rat’ written on the cross bar. It has front and rear disc brakes, chrome effect front forks and 24" wheels. The offender who made off on the bike is described as a white male with tanned skin. About 5' 8" tall, slim build, with messy, greasy, neck length, black hair and aged somewhere in his late teens to early twenties. He was wearing faded blue jeans and a dark red T-shirt that was hanging over his jeans. He approached the bike from the alleyway at the side of the florists. When he stole the bike, he went back towards the florist, but we don’t know whether he went down the alleyway or carried on along Church Street. Any information in relation to this theft will be gratefully received.

During the last two or three months we have had a number of reports about groups of youths causing problems around the village. This has surprised me somewhat, as the current group of local youths who are regularly in the village during the evenings are usually polite and keep themselves to themselves. They’re aware of the locations that I allow them to congregate at and

Hopefully by now the weather will have improved and you’re all enjoying a traditional English summer (No, not rain!). With a bit of luck we might experience the 30+°C we had last summer and then we can dust off the old barbecues and leave our doors and windows open to let the glorious summer weather in. Or can we?

Lets start with barbecues. Love ’em or hate ’em they’re an increasingly popular form of entertainment at this time of year. If you’re lucky enough to be having one, then they’re great. Invite family and friends over, chill some wine, put some beers in the fridge, defrost the sausages and crank up the music. Before you know it it’s 2.00am, Grandad’s asleep on the sun lounger, dad’s belting out yet another drunken rendition of ‘Greased Lightning’ and there’s a pile of dirty pots the size of Mount Everest!

Also, if you’re lucky, you might find that you forgot to let off one of the ‘One thousand decibel – Sonic Boom’ fireworks that you bought specially for the occasion. A firework that would bring enormous pleasure to everyone within a five mile radius were you to light it at 2.00am!

However, if you’re not lucky enough to be having a barbecue, or to have been invited to one, then they can be a tad annoying. Imagine.

It’s 11.00pm. You’re in bed. It’s a sticky, hot summer’s night. The air is warm and there’s no breeze. All the windows are open in a vain attempt to get a draught blowing through the house, but it’s not working. You’re lying on top of the bed, but no matter what you do, or which way you lay, it’s too hot to sleep. But you’re tired, you’ve got to get up for work in the morning, and because you can’t sleep you’re getting irritated.

And then there’s the noise. It’s been going on since 6.00pm. The shouting, the loud drunken hyena-like laughter, the constant thud, thud, thud of music played with too much bass, the scraping of garden furniture across patio slabs, the clatter of grown up men reliving their youth by pretending they can still play football like their boyhood heroes, Charlton and Best, and groups of drunken women who believe they can sing like Maria Carey, but failing, badly!! And then there’s the icing on the cake. The sudden silence that warns you that something isn’t right.

There’s a sudden feeling of anticipation hanging in the air like the branches of a willow tree.

Something’s about to happen, but what?

BANG!!! The good old ‘One Thousand decibel – Sonic Boom’ firework that lifts you a good three inches off your duvet and stuns your heart into temporary submission for a couple of seconds before it remembers it has to keep beating, and the noise from the party five streets away slowly begins to increase and the whole process starts again.

So, barbecues. Love ’em or hate ’em, it looks like they’re here to stay. But please give a thought for those around you who aren’t fortunate enough to have been invited to yours.

Nettleham’s a village, not a town or a city, and noise travels further than you think. No one wants to be a killjoy, but if we all consider other people and act sensibly and responsibly, then

maybe we can all get on a little better and reduce the increasing number of minor and unnecessary disputes.

Home security. I know I’ve mentioned this subject in the past, but it is an important one and well worth repeating. As I mentioned earlier with the warm weather upon us (hopefully!) we do tend to leave windows and doors open to allow air into the house - keeping it cool and comfortable. Whilst most of us do this, it is essential to remember that not everyone is as honest as you or I and will view an open door or window as an opportunity to take something that isn’t theirs. Whilst no one expects you to live in a fortress, there are some basic Crime Prevention measures that you can take. For instance, if you’re spending the majority of your day in the rear garden, then make sure the front door and windows are closed and locked, garden gates too, if possible. Never forget to close and lock all downstairs windows and first floor windows that are easily accessible at night.

Don’t leave valuable items on display either in the house or in the car, this just produces temptation. Lock away ladders and garden tools that a burglar could use to break in with, make sure that any alarms and sensor lights that are fitted are in good working order.

A number of people I’ve spoken to recently have voiced concerns over the use of Watchline which, for those of you that aren’t aware is a Neighbourhood Watch system that alerts you to crimes that have occurred in the area. The concerns are that you don’t receive information solely about the Nettleham area, but also about other areas including Bracebridge Heath and North Hykeham, which seem to take up the bulk of information as, fortunately, very little happens in Nettleham. This has resulted in some people coming off the Watchline scheme and depleting the numbers. We also have the added problem of getting information to you more quickly than we can at present, bearing in mind that Nettleham News is a quarterly publication.

To combat this we are looking to introduce a scheme which is having a huge amount of success in the Cambridgeshire area. It involves the use of e-mail and works by e-mailing individual people when a crime occurs in their area, or an incident has occurred that we need assistance with. You won’t receive information about crimes/incidents in other areas unless I feel that their problems might spread to Nettleham. The system is also used to pass on Crime Prevention advice and to notify people of any meetings, etc, that are taking place.

Anyone with an e-mail facility can join the scheme and, of course, it’s free of charge. Those without e-mail can still get information through the usual channels and my articles in the Nettleham News will continue. I’m currently waiting for further information on the scheme from Cambridgeshire police but if you’re interested in receiving this information then please e-mail me with your name and e-mail address only (no other details please!) and I’ll add you to the list. Notification of when the scheme will start will be sent to everyone on the list at the appropriate time.

I mentioned some time ago that the Nettleham Parish Council had kindly offered to allow me to have my own web page on the Nettleham Village website. This should now be in place and will be another way of informing you all of recent crime/events in the village (If it isn’t up and running yet, it soon will be!!). It will be used to publicise recent crime and to provide Crime Prevention advice where necessary, speeding up the process of getting information out into the public domain faster than at present.

To access the page, log onto the Nettleham Village website and click on the police link. My photo, contact details and a short introduction is on there, along with recent information on local crime and current issues. There is also a link to the Lincolnshire Police website.

In this edition of Nettleham News there is an introduction from our Police Community Support Officer, Andrea Smalley. Andrea is a tremendous help to us and her enthusiasm and commitment to her role is commendable. She is very approachable and willing to help wherever she can. Please feel free to stop her for a chat when you see her walking around the village and if anyone has any questions for her, there is a list of numbers on which you can contact her at the beginning of her article on page 19.

Along with shed alarms I also have some personal attack alarms available. We now have two types. Both are very loud and are easy to operate. One is very small measuring only 1.75 x 1.5 inches. The other is slightly larger at 2.75 x 2.25 inches, but does incorporate a small light which can be used independently of the alarm.

Both alarms are still very reasonably priced at only £5.00 each.

LINCOLNSHIRE POLICE TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

Could You be a Training Volunteer?

I am the Force Training Co-ordinator for the Lincolnshire Police, based at our Headquarters in Nettleham, and I am seeking the assistance of your readers.

No acting skills are necessary, in fact, the more natural the better. At this time I am only seeking volunteers over the age of 18, but above this there are no age restrictions.

Police Training nationally is currently undergoing a comprehensive review, and is moving towards a more community based approach. Lincolnshire Police is at the forefront of this approach, and this letter marks the early stages of the Force moves in this area.

Depending on the number of volunteers, at this time it is envisaged that each would only be used 2 or 3 times throughout the year.

I am seeking adult volunteers from the community who would be willing to be involved in the training of our staff, who are your Police Officers. This would include a certain amount of ‘role acting’ in controlled, part-scripted scenarios. As an example, we would be needing members of the community to play ‘witnesses’ to a mock crime. This would entail the volunteer making a statement to a Student Officer from a crime they have ‘witnessed’.

Andrea Smalley Police Community Support Officer Hi, my name is Andrea Smalley and I’m your local PCSO for the Nettleham area.

Some of you will have already met me, or seen me walking around the village, but for those of you that haven’t I’m sure you very soon will.

I have been your local PCSO since September 2003, and cover many villages, Nettleham included. I decided to become a PCSO because I felt it would give me an insight into the workings of the police force and because I enjoy meeting people and helping people where possible.

I graduated from Liverpool University with a degree in Architecture and then went to work in retail in Lincoln, to help pay off my uni fees! I worked in retail for two years before deciding to take on a more challenging and worthwhile role by working with the Community as a PCSO. So far I’ve found the role enjoyable and rewarding and have received a warm welcome from everyone I’ve met.

My role is mainly one of high visibility reassurance patrols around the villages but I am also able to deal with anti-social behaviour, and other minor offences such as those involving cycles. Crime prevention advice and surveys are also part of my role, so if anyone would like a survey doing or just some basic crime prevention advice, then please contact me on any of the numbers above. What’s that by your Foot?

Introducing a new, exciting and imaginative project in which everyone in the village, young and old, will be able to participate.

You would be amazed at the number and variety of things which have turned up under people’s feet over the years, in and around Nettleham.

Stone Age flint arrow-heads, a polished stone axe and a possible enclosure for funeral rites; Bronze Age barrows, flints and a hoard which is now housed in the British Museum. Iron Age pottery and a range of earthworks, boundaries and enclosures which are either Iron Age, or even earlier. From the Roman period there’s a temple, coins, pottery, maybe a villa and perhaps a burial, and the Anglo Saxons who followed them left coins, pottery, a loom weight and jewellery. And then of course there’s the site of the Medieval Bishops’ Manor House, which may have been built over an earlier Anglo Saxon Royal Manor.

And if your eye moves up from the ground you’ll find a church with Anglo Saxon, Medieval and later fabric, the ruins of a Hall which has associations with the American War of Independence and stone cottages from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

People have lived in what we now know as Nettleham for at least two and a half thousand years and probably much longer.

But there’s very little information here in the village to tell of the lives of those who lived here before us. Even the Manor House site, which is a scheduled ancient monument of national importance, has only got a boring notice board with a plan and a brief description.

Would you be interested in discovering more about the place in which you live, in helping to develop helpful and attractive publicity and creative displays?

A group of us here in Nettleham feel that this village has a really interesting heritage, and that we are not showing it off to its full advantage. So we have formed a small steering group in the hope that we can do something to correct this. However it is not really a question of what we want to do about it, but what you in the village want to do. So here is your chance to let us know your ideas. To set the ball rolling and give you some discussion points, here are some of the ideas we have been talking about.

We thought that it would be better to concentrate on one area first. We suggest that the site of the Manor House would be the best starting point. This manor was owned originally by Queen Edith (widow of Edward the Confessor) and it is clear that although she was dead by 1086, the year of the Domesday Book, the manor was built by this date. However, there is lots of research to be done and our first job is to recruit a team to start on this as soon as possible.

John Blakely (remember his superb model of the site in the church during November 2002?) has already done a considerable amount of research on this subject and has put forward proposals for restoring the medieval gardens to how they might have been in their prime. This project has already been submitted to the National Lottery Fund and received the green light for funding - so if the other agencies which are involved (the Church Commissioners who own the land, English Heritage who maintain the site as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, etc) are all willing to assist in the development and realisation of this idea, then the village would have an asset of national historic importance.

If historical research is not your thing, don’t worry there’s still lots of other things we would like to get started. We plan to organise some field walks on the manor and surrounding area. This is lots of fun and we hope that the local children as well as their parents and other adults will get involved in this activity. An ideal time for this is end of summer or beginning of autumn. This would be followed up by an evening when we would clean, record and identify any finds discovered on the walks. Then another extension activity could be a day workshop recreating some of the pottery finds to make replica pots, which brings the whole exercise to life. A bit like our own version of Time Team!

Another idea is to launch this project with a small community play, hopefully in the summer of 2005, telling the story of our manor. This play would be a spin-off of the research group, but it would lead to other activities - costumes and props would need to be made and perhaps a workshop day could be held where an expert in this field 21

could come to work with us and get the costume makers and designers off to a flying start. Drama workshops are another possibility.

In addition, we hope that various art workshops could be arranged to give us all some ideas of how we can create clear visual representations of all the wonderful history that the research group will surely find.

This is just a start. We, the steering group, are very excited and encouraged by the ideas we have already discussed. Other villages have similar projects and we think we have plenty of raw material available to create an interesting and stimulating Heritage Trail in our village.

But it simply won’t happen without the interest of many more of you. Please get in touch with us with your ideas and lots of enthusiasm, letting us know either what you want to do, or what skills you have which could help, or both of these things.

You don’t need any skills though, we can hopefully organise some experts to teach us those, all you really need is a desire to be involved. If enough people come forward at this stage we can go ahead and organise an open meeting to discuss all these ideas. So come on let’s exploit the history of our beautiful village to show it off to its best advantage.

The creation of the Heritage Trail is seen as a long-term project, involving a wide spectrum of different aspects of the history of Nettleham. It will provide exciting opportunities for a large number of people of all ages and abilities to participate in all sorts of arts, crafts and skills and will enable those who take part to widen their interests, increase their knowledge and learn new skills in the process. But above all it will be fun!

Talking Sense is the National Deafblind and Rubella Association Activities of the organisation and services provided Sense is the national organisation supporting and campaigning for people who are deafblind and have associated disabilities, their families, their carers and professionals who work with them. Founded as a parents’ self-help group in 1955, Sense is now the leading organisation working with deafblind people.

“Many deafblind children and young people are growing up in an isolated world, unable to take part in social and leisure activities alongside their peers. Gaining independence, meeting other children, making friends and joining in with community activities outside school are all part of growing up for children and young people everywhere. Deafblind children and young people need these opportunities too”.

Sense offers advice, help and information to deafblind people and their families, supports families through a national network and local branches, runs a holiday programme for deafblind children and adults, provides residential, respite and day services, has communicator guides and one-to-one intervenor support, offers training and consultancy.

Why this campaign?

If a child is born deafblind, understanding and learning about the world is hugely difficult. With limited access to information about their environment, deafblind children need special support if they are to have a chance of learning and developing like hearing/sighted children.

Sense Children’s Campaign: Opening worlds, opening lives Sense is currently campaigning for the right of deafblind children and young people to receive the support they need to truly participate in society. Lucy Drescher Campaigns and Parliamentary Officer reports:

Research shows that if intervention is available at the right time, the lives of deafblind children can be transformed. This intervention should involve a specialist assessment, advice and support for parents and the support of an intervenor, as appropriate.

Once they are at school the social, leisure and community opportunities for young

deafblind people are very restricted. The shortage of accessible venues, lack of one-to-one support, scarcity of accessible information and lack of awareness mean that young deafblind people are forced into leading unnecessarily restricted lives.

The recent Section 7 Guidance, issued by the Department of Health after strong campaigning from Sense, gives children and adults the right to a specialist assessment and appropriate services. This Guidance gives deafblind children and young people the right to be assessed by a person with specialist knowledge and to be provided with services which take into account their special and complex needs.

This campaign is about changing the lives of deafblind children and young people. The impetus for this campaign came from members of Sense, deafblind people, families and Sense staff.

What do we want?

There are two main goals for the campaign: ● Deafblind children should have the right to receive specialist services before they go to school - to receive a full assessment of their needs and be supported to achieve their full potential. ● Young deafblind people should have the right to access the same community activities as their peers and be supported in doing so. This support could mean greater awareness amongst the people running community activities, changes to the environment where the activity is taking place, or one-to-one support.

The evidence Sense has consulted a large group of young deafblind people about what they enjoy doing outside school and what they are actually able to do.

Sense A survey has also been sent out to the parents of children and young people who are deafblind, asking them about their children’s experiences. The results of these consultations, with young people and parents will be used as evidence in a report commissioned by Sense, demonstrating how vital it is that deafblind people and children receive a specialist assessment, and that they and their families have access to appropriate support in the pre-school years.

How can you support the campaign?

The campaign was originally launched at the House of Lords in January 2002, with a five-point Charter of Rights which MPs, key local authority workers and others were asked to sign up to.

The success of the campaign relies on it working at both national and local levels - so it is vital that deafblind children and young people, families and Sense staff all get involved. If MPs have the opportunity to meet children and young people who are deafblind and their families, they will be able to hear about the importance of specialist assessments and appropriate services which take into account their complex needs.

Here’s how: ● Get a campaign pack from the Campaigns and Public Policy Team. ● Write to your local councillor or Chair of Social Services, telling them about the campaign and requesting a meeting.

Sense East in Lincolnshire There are a number of different services run by the Sense East in Lincolnshire Outreach office, next to the library in Nettleham, providing information, advice and support to deafblind children and adults and their families throughout the county.

Direct services are provided including an Intervenor Service, where trained intervenors work on a one-to-one basis with both children and adults born with sensory impairment and associated disablilities. Some 30 children and adults in the county receive a regular intervenor service each and every week, funded by Lincolnshire Social Services.

In the summer holidays, a special activity programme is run so that the children and adults can access facilities in their own local community such as swimming, local parks and other attractions.

For adults who develop deafblindness in later life, Sense East runs a Communicator Guide Service. Volunteers are recruited and trained to work with people with acquired deafblindness. The volunteer guides assist with such tasks as sorting out the mail, or perhaps accompanying

Sense East also has a number of group homes and resource services throughout the county, where congenitally deafblind adults live together in a small group with local access to a resource centre, where they are able to undertake a range of different activities according to their own individual abilities and interests.

West Lindsey is gearing up to take the Lincolnshire Show by storm this year!

Councillors and Officers have joined forces to form a special planning group that will ensure the Council’s presence at the 2004 event is exemplary.

The winning entries from two competitions launched to District school pupils to design a recycling/waste management poster and a compost bin will also be on display.

The group has decided that the authority’s corporate display at the Show will take on the main theme of recycling, with a focus on West Lindsey’s Waste Management Service.

Of course, there will be an opportunity to meet some of your local Councillors who, along with Officers, will be present on the two days to answer any queries you may have about the authority’s services.

Members of the public will be able to find out more about this and other Council Services through special presentations and there will also be a chance to participate in fun activities being run by talented artists.

These will include creating a mosaic out of old CD’s, using cardboard and packing tape to weave baskets and make 3D sculptures, such as chairs, windmills and human figures, out of specially rolled newspaper.

The Lincolnshire Show is a two-day event being held at the Lincolnshire Showground on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 June, from 8.00am to 6.00pm.

Nettleham Artist Wins Major Prize Many ex-students will remember the name of Rachael Dee, the watercolour artist and teacher, who taught at Mulsanne Park for six years.

Rachael, who has exhibited in galleries and elsewhere for many years, has been awarded first prize by the Mail on Sunday for one of her paintings in the Spring Exhibition of the British Society of Painters.

The painting entitled “Moonlit Meadow” was chosen as the winner from the 1,200 which were submitted.

Congratulations, and more about Rachel in a future edtion of Nettleham News.

How Would You Cope with Failing Sight?

I am indebted to Dawn Myers and Bev Trott for their initiative in making the collection for my son Clinton possible.

Many thanks to all who contributed - I am very privileged to have a gesture such as this in my son’s name.

With “normal” vision we rarely take a moment to think about what life can be like for those who cannot see clearly.

Despite a short-sighted objection, my congratulations to David Dubut and the Parish Council for having the wisdom to see the benefits of the location of the seat, and their willingness to assist Roy Kyme on its installation.

To have such a superb bench in such a beautiful location, and so close to where Clinton lived his short life is very apt, for he was himself a beautiful young man of Nettleham.

Short-sightedness and long-sightedness can be resolved by the use of spectacles and contact lenses, but eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts are the main causes of severe visual impairment in this country. It is generally when vision begins to deteriorate that people first seek the help that they need, but it can be hard to know where to go for support and advice.

I am sure it will benefit everyone and add a little more to this lovely village.

Sightsavers A most sincere thank you to all who supported the Coffee Morning in aid of Sight Savers held on 3rd April, which raised £126.76. Thank you all so much for joining us. Included in this amount were, of course, several generous donations, some from people at the event and others who kindly sent donations. It was a lovely morning of fun and fellowship and we did appreciate your support.

Glynis kindly allowed the sale of Easter chicks and bunnies at the Salon, raising a further £26.50, so thank you very much Glynis, your staff, ladies (and possibly a few gents too).

Once again Win and Philip Rollin sold Easter chicks to colleagues and their efforts realised a further £50.70. Thank you both very much.

ver the past few months Nettleham Scout Group have been working together on several recycling projects and activities.

We have started to collect and recycle aluminium cans and have visited the Recycling Centre at Peterborough as part of working towards our Group Environment Award. The Kestrel Cub Pack have also been working on the Global Challenge and Global Conservation Badge. To complete the Global Conservation Badge we held a “Litter Pick” one Saturday morning in the village.

The cubs met at the Scout HQ armed with black bin bags and rubber gloves

and for the next hour or so we cleaned the village centre, around the library, in Vicar’s Wood and down All Saints Lane. The cubs collected lots of litter and several cans to add to our recycling collection!!

It was nice to hear the supportive comments made by several villagers and although the village appeared to be clean and tidy on this particular morning, it was surprising just how many black bags we filled with rubbish! Perhaps we all need to be more aware of the litter that is thrown around our lovely village.

So remember, please take your litter home or put it in a bin!!

The total we have been able to send to Sight Savers this year was £216.00. When 50p will protect someone from River Blindness for a year and £1.20 will buy ointment to treat the early stages of trachoma, you can imagine this grand sum will make a huge difference. Thank you all for your generosity.

I have booked a stall for Sight Savers at Nettleham Cares (see below) and look forward to seeing you then. Thank you all again.

y the time you read this Nettleham Library should have finished its redecoration work, giving the Library a fresh new look - we hope you will like it as much as we do.

After a fabulous response from parents and carers to our storytime survey, monthly story sessions were introduced at the Library in March and have been a huge success. Helen, who runs the sessions, has been delighted to see so many of you and is really enjoying sharing stories with you all.

The June Storytime will be on Thursday 17th June with the theme of ‘On the Beach’, July’s is on Thursday 15th and called ‘Happy Holidays’ and in August the storytime session will be held on Thursday 15th when Helen’s theme will be ‘Old Macdonald and his Farm’. Storytimes are held in the Library between 2.30pm and 3.00pm and all pre-school children (and their mums, dads, grandparents and carers) are very welcome.

Some more dates for your diary are the 5th, 7th and 9th of July when the Pensions Service will be visiting the Library between 2pm and 4pm. The Pensions Service is a new service set up by the Department for Work and Pensions which aims to combat poverty and promote security for all pensioners. Staff from the Service will be on hand in the Library to offer advice on all manner of issues affecting pensioners in Lincolnshire, as well as the new Pensions Credit scheme and how those eligible can apply (see third column on this page).

The Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Award The Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Award is run annually by Lincolnshire Libraries for the ‘Best Read’ of the year as voted for by young people aged 9 - 13 in Lincolnshire.

Young people throughout the County nominate the books they have enjoyed

which have been published the previous year and a panel of young people and interested adults then choose a shortlist from the nominated titles.

Young People in schools, reading groups and at libraries across Lincolnshire then read the books on the shortlist and vote for their favourite. Voting ends in July and the winner is announced at a special ceremony at Lincoln Central Library.

The aim is to provide an improved service tailored to the needs of current and future pensioners and ensure that pensioners are receiving all the benefits to which they are entitled.

St John Ambulance provide an excellent first aid service throughout the UK and any youngsters in the village who would like to learn about first aid and patient care should contact Bryan or call at the Old School in the village on any Wednesday evening between 6.30 and 8.30pm. You would be most welcome.

They are also seeking a person over 18 years of age (preferably female) who would be interested in coming to assist in teaching the St John Ambulance Nettleham Cadets on Wednesday evenings.

Should this person also wish to go on duty with St John from time to time, training is available to enable them to achieve this objective.

Bryan would also be very interested to hear from anyone who has been a St John Ambulance Cadet in the village in the past thirty years, as he is compiling a book of all past cadets and those who held the title of Nettleham Grand Prior.

Nettleham Twinning - Easter Visit 2004

O

ver fifty members of the Nettleham Twinning, including two teenagers and seven children, made the trip to Nettleham’s twin village of Mulsanne this year.

The trip was a resounding success, with those visiting for the first time delighted to have made the visit. Nothing on the programme was compulsory, with members and their hosts choosing what they would like to participate in.

The Mulsanne President, Jean-Claude Ferré welcomed all at a reception held at the Centre Cultural on the Saturday morning, this was followed later in the afternoon by a boules tournament. Teams were mixed, the novice and the experienced of both nationalities played together in what is always a popular twinning pastime. Sunday is traditionally ‘family day’ - it is always interesting to hear how various members spent their day. My Sunday was simply doing what the French excel at - a long leisurely lunch with a glass or two of fine wine.

Monday found us at ‘Le Petit France’ at Elancourt, on the outskirts of Paris. Here you can see all France’s main attractions in one small area. Many are well known tourist sites, some not so, but all equally interesting.

Members took the opportunity to study carefully the model of the Cathedral at Chartres, before our visit there later that afternoon. Chartres Cathedral contains the most wonderful collection of 13th century stained glass windows in Europe and with the aid of an English speaking guide, twinners were able to appreciate the full majesty of this World Heritage Monument.

On our final day we visited the Le Mans Waterworks and the tour was extremely informative - we were surprised to find that all water used in Le Mans and the southern part of the Sarte Department is extracted from the river Huisne, a tributary of the river Sarte. The afternoon, if members still had some energy, was left free for a bit of retail therapy, (a euphemism for buying wine, etc). In the evening, we were guests of the Mayor of Mulsanne, Bernard Gasse at les Salle des Fête.

Later that evening we had to sing for our supper, members were somewhat apprehensive - since the departure of Alice Kennedy from the village, we have had difficulty in stringing two notes together. However, after the defeat of England in the Six Nations Competition, I can report that honour was restored, kick-started by a Welsh man (not my other half I hasten to add) - we beat our French friends hands down - we picked the best songs and sang them with aplomb. We did Nettleham proud and enjoyed ourselves too!

They did it their way!

BADGES AND TOKENS In a sequel to the article on pages 62/63 of the spring edition of the magazine relating to Roman finds in and around the village, Barbara Taylor has kindly sent the following article on another archaeological theme: pilgrim badges & tokens. “...it was late and they were a long way from home when they met a man dressed like a Saracen, in pilgrim’s clothes. He was carrying a staff with a wide strip of cloth wound around it like bindweed, and a begging bowl and a satchel were slung on his hip. He had a hundred or so ampullae fastened to his hat, souvenirs of Sinai, scallop-shells from Galicia, and on his cloak were sewn crosses, cross-keys from Rome and a copy of St Veronica’s handkerchief in the front - so that all should see by his souvenirs which shrines he had visited.

The people asked him from where he had come.

“From Sinai,” he said, “and from our Lord’s sepulchre; I have visited Bethlehem, Babylon, Armenia, Alexandria, and many other spots. You can see from the souvenirs on my hat that I’ve walked a good, long way in all kinds of weather, seeking out the shrines of the saints for the benefit of my soul.”

From Piers the Plowman (14th century) The above description of the pilgrims visiting the shrine of St. Thomas à Becket, mentions the souvenirs which pilgrims bought at the shrines they visited, one such having been discovered in Nettleham in the last century.

One of the commonest souvenirs was the ampulla, a little leaden or pewter flask which contained a few drops of holy water from a shrine or holy well. These ampullae were worn on a pilgrim’s hat or around his neck as proof of his pilgrimage, and the holy water which they contained was treated as a curative for the sick in times of need.

The ampullae most commonly found in England are made of lead and in the shape of a little flask with a handle on either side of the neck, and were commonly decorated with a scallop-shell or cockle-shell motif on one side and an initial or heraldic emblem on the other side. In a number of cases the shell is replaced by a compass-drawn flower. The scallop-shell was originally the emblem of St James of Compostella, but over the years it came to have a much wider significance and by the time of the later Middle Ages was generally viewed as a sign of pilgrimage.

Apart from ampullae, pilgrims wore badges or tokens. The little badge of St Barbara found at Nettleham, Lincolnshire is one such pilgrim souvenir. Many of the badges bear a representation of a saint with his or her special attributes. The token of the “Good Rood in the Walle at Boston” is another such souvenir. Found at Brothertoft in about 1810, it was probably produced by the Gild of the Good Rood in the Walle at Boston and sold to a pilgrim visiting this holy cross. Little is known of this Gild and the token itself is long since lost.

The illustration depicts the pilgrim badge of St Barbara found in the village (where? when? by whom?). It is thought to have been discovered when North Street was being developed and was loaned to the museum in Lincoln in July, 1977.

It dates from the 15th century and is 30mm high, 15mm wide and 3mm deep. It is made of copper alloy, with a wire loop on the reverse, and depicts St Barbara with what is thought to be a cannon barrel on her right and either a palm or sword in her left hand.

She was a daughter of a heathen in Asia Minor who beheaded her in c235 when she converted to Christianity, (he was struck dead by a bolt of lightning immediately!).

She was adopted as the patron saint of both artillerymen and architects (?) and was believed to give protection against sudden death and impiety.

6 How do you complain to the Local Government Ombudsman?

Send your complaint to the Ombudsman for your area (see Q10 page 43).

You can use the form and there are notes to help you use it, or alternatively you can write a letter including all the points covered in the form. Complaints must be in writing. If this is difficult, ask someone to help you, for example your local Citizens Advice Bureau or a councillor. If you cannot write your complaint in English, we can arrange to have it translated.

You may get someone to complain for you (for example, a friend, relative or solicitor) as long as they have your permission to represent you. But, if you employ a professional person, such as a solicitor, we will only ask the council to pay the fee in exceptional circumstances. This is because people do not usually need a professional to put a complaint to us. However, you may be eligible for help from a solicitor or some advice agencies through the Legal Services Commission’s Legal Help Scheme.

If you have any documents to support your complaint, such as letters from the council, please send them with your complaint. You may want to send us photocopies instead.

Please let us know if you would like us to return them to you.

We will usually send a copy of your complaint to the council concerned.

7 When do I make the complaint?

Complaints should be made within 12 months of when you first knew about the matter of which you are complaining. If you leave it later, we may not be able to help.

In most cases, before we can investigate a complaint, the council must have a chance to answer it themselves. If you have not complained to the council, please do so. You can find out how to complain from the council’s offices, or you can ask a councillor to help.

If you are not satisfied with the answer, or if the council does not respond within a reasonable time, you can complain to the Ombudsman for your area.

8 What happens next?

When we have received your complaint, we will usually write to acknowledge it within five working days, explaining what will happen next. If you do not hear from us within that time, please telephone the office where you sent the complaint.

ANYONE FOR KEEP FIT? I regularly attend one of Rosemary Biggs Keep Fit Classes in the village. Towards the end of the summer term Rosemary always reminds our class of the annual East Midlands Keep Fit Association Rally, which takes place in November. It is a full day of various Keep Fit sessions and demonstrations by county teams, and also includes the AGM. This year the venue was to be at a school in Leicester.

I have heard Rosemary’s plea for “Any Volunteers” many times and usually I have chosen to keep mum or look the other way!

However, this time the appeal was a rather special one. It is Lincolnshire Keep Fit Association’s Ruby anniversary year and with a declining membership and with some people no longer able to take part in the demonstrations, it could be the last occasion on which our county would be represented in the East Midlands Rally. It must have struck a chord with me for even though I am Derbyshire born and bred, I found myself agreeing to join the team.

What had I let myself in for?

All became clear at our first evening rehearsal, one of six, which spanned from mid-September to the end of October. On that first night I accompanied Rosemary and Trish Dines (another long time member of the Lincs team), and we three made the journey from Nettleham to Sleaford. I was introduced to the rest of the team and to Anne Rust, our leader and choreographer.

Luckily I know Anne from “Christmas Keep Fit” party sessions which I have attended at Skellingthorpe, but the other ladies were unknown to me and from all parts of Lincolnshire. However, there was one other newcomer apart from me, which was rather comforting, but I need not have worried, as we were both warmly welcomed into the team.

In view of the uncertain future of the team, a rather apt piece of music had carefully been selected by Anne for our routine called “Turning Point” - an instrumental by “The Shadows”. I was not familiar with this tune at first, but by the end of October believe me I knew it very well - so too did John, my husband! Rosemary’s husband Mike had kindly videoed the routine for me to practise with at home, and with the music on cassette too, (handy to listen to the beat whilst ironing), “Turning Point” has almost become a “Family Favourite!”

The practices came and went until our performance day, one Saturday at the beginning of November. We set off early and picked up another lady in Lincoln and travelled to Leicester. On arrival I was amazed by the numbers of ladies there to take part. The morning was taken up with Keep Fit for all, then lunch followed by the AGM. There were teams representing Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire and demonstration time for Lincolnshire grew ever nearer. The hall was huge compared to our practice hall at Sleaford and with hundreds of people watching, I was rather nervous. However, led in confidently by Anne and feeling very much part of the team I actually did rather enjoy the experience. The demonstration went well and Anne says she has since received a lot of compliments on our routine. It was quite different from the others and we were the smallest group.

I am really pleased I took part in the display, it was hard work remembering all the movements, and a big commitment to attend all the rehearsals, but I surprised myself how much I did enjoy it. We are performing the routine again in April at Lincolnshire’s Ruby Anniversary Rally, then once more in May at the Active Retired Rally. Perhaps then my public performances will cease - unless, “Any Volunteers” for next year?

The Poetry Page MIDSUMMER IN NETTLEHAM The golden sphere of the sun, ascends proudly, Turning the heavens blue.

It sends shimmering beams Through the tops of the tallest trees, Burnishing them with a blaze of golden-green.

Dewdrops evaporate As the warming land stirs, Rekindling growth.

Flowers that hung their heads in sleepy grace, Raise themselves to view The source of life and light, Which glows with a radiant hue.

The sun commands all Urging forth blossom That hides timidly in buds And enticing out delicate petals, Green berries, fruit and grain.

Vibrant poppies line the fields, Glittering and dancing in the glamour of the day.

Energetic fathers and their younger offspring, Shape castles that are greatly admired For the few short hours of their existence.

Grandfathers, feel impelled To place obligatory knotted handkerchiefs Upon balding pates, Whilst daring better-halves, Hoist their skirts and tuck them Into voluminous knickers, In time-honoured fashion.

Hand in hand with grandchildren, They make an undignified beeline Towards the dancing waves, Which will bring back memories of distant youth.

Tots, tiptoe gingerly on the outermost edges Of the relentless tide, And leap back excitedly as they become aware Of the chill touch of the playful ocean.

Older children, splash, swim and submerge In deeper waters of the invigorating swell, To revel in the novelty of the boundless play zone.

Their less athletic peers, explore rock pools, Searching for pincer-wielding crabs Or stationary starfish.

Imaginative youngsters crowd around The traditional Punch and Judy booth, That echoes with the raucous cries of the puppets, And the ribald laughter of the appreciative audience.

Youthful animal-lovers flock to the donkey rides, To become knights and princesses.

They ride up and down the foreshore, On their philosophical mounts, Which plod on their predetermined routes, Each and every day.

Before long, the young pleasure-seekers return To converge upon the family campsite, Where they demand candyfloss, toffee-apples And sticks of striped rock from their loved ones.

Extracting money proves to be easy, But later, when healthy appetites are satisfied, The children find it extremely difficult To get the older generation Off comfortable deckchairs, to join in with games.

Only uneasy consciences can prise the owners Of pale, scantily-clad bodies, Away from their worship of the sun For they are meticulously adorned With carefully applied lotions and creams.

As the incoming tide strengthens, The sun moves lower in the heavens.

There is a gradual migration of shivering bodies, From the beach, which has begun to lose its allure.

Even the hardiest souls start to pack up Their innumerable belongings.

They encourage tired children and crying infants, To move towards the maze of entertaining distractions That beckon temptingly nearby.

Parents feel impelled to spend more than they can afford, And empty their sand-strewn pockets of cash, To placate demanding offspring.

Perhaps in their subconscious racial memories, The holiday-makers feel that an offering must be made To the shrine of summer fulfillment; For they have collected seashell tokens And worshipped at the fount of natural beauty.

MORE ABOUT THE BECK Readers may remember that on pages 66/67 of the winter 2003 edition of the magazine, there was an article concerning the sluice structure at the Nettleham/Riseholme Parish boundary, which had come to the attention of David Fenwick who was concerned that the flow of water in the Beck was not as great as he remembered from his early years in the village.

Here, village resident Nigel Clayton has kindly let us reproduce a diagram which was drawn by him in 1966 and shows clearly the layout of the area with the three sluices and other features which have an influence on the flow (and quality!) of water in the Beck.

FUND RAISING FOR LINK ROMANIA Thank you all for your support of the Information & Video Evening held at Church View on 19th February, which raised £180.00 for the Skills Centre.

It was really great to see so many there and it was good to meet Margaret and John Willemsen again. They thank all of you for your generosity.

For those of you who didn’t manage to make it, John started the evening by thanking each and every one of us for our shoeboxes and reminding us how much pleasure they give to all the families. He did ask us to please include a woolly hat in our boxes this year, as the children wear these ten months of the year. We know there are several ladies busily knitting hats for this appeal and we thank them for that.

John also showed us many photographs showing the progress being made on the Skills Centre.

Work has now restarted on the building and hopefully it won’t be too long before the roof is added.

Further to the article in a recent Nettleham News regarding the outfall from the lake at Riseholme, some of your readers may be interested in a diagram I drew in March 1966, following an interview with the then Principal of Riseholme Agricultural College, Mr Readman.

From my notes that I took then, it was understood that the lake was initially laid as part of the landscaping for Riseholme Hall while it was still a residence of the Bishop of Lincoln and paintings of this period appear from time to time in Usher Art Gallery local exhibitions.

The installations of the sluices (of which there are three) took place when it became an agricultural college around a hundred years ago. This maintained the lake water level which was kept fairly full at all times to help maintain the resident wildlife.

The Farm Manager, at his own discretion, would make adjustments to the three sluices. They would be restricted or closed in order to: 1) prevent odours from rotting deposits and contamination entering from upstream - the water rises on the Lincolnshire Show Ground at Grange De Lings and to allow periodic dredging of the silt build up.

2) allow extraction of water for the fruit fields during periods of drought.

Gate C would also be shut back (it now appears for the purpose of watering the resident deer herd).

The gates would also be opened: 1) during periods of very heavy rain or snow melt 2) if it was thought the ‘Great Beck’ within Nettleham was partly drying up during the summer months.

Aside from the Riseholme branch of the Great Beck, a tributary runs from Danby Hill and into this stretch several fresh springs rise, beginning behind Safeways (Waitrose) Supermarket, the location of the archaeological remains of a Roman pump aqueduct system which supplied the city of Lincoln 1900 years ago. A large portion of surface road run-off from the Ermine Estate also enters the stream from a drain behind Thurlby Crescent.

In addition, filtered effluent from the Dairy Farm and the College Sewage Works was (and probably still is) being deposited into the flow upstream from Nettleham.

During my interviewing of several farmers along the Beck’s course, it was interesting to note, even then, that no-one extracted water from the Beck for the use of their livestock, for fear of pollution!!!

Margaret concentrated more on the education of the children and the need for sponsorship of the children. So much to be done in all areas!

Our Coffee Morning followed on 5th March and this was a great time of fellowship and fun, raising £170.00 for the Skills Centre. A further generous donation took this amount to £175.00.

Wonderful, thank you. Finally a big thank you to Doreen, the Scheme Manager at Church View for allowing the use of the lounge and kitchen there.

Our latest fund raising effort was the Quiz which made a profit of £26.00. The first prize of £10.00 was won by C Poole of Lincoln, the second prize (£5.00) was won by T Dines of Nettleham and the third prize (£3.00) was won

by J Goodliffe of Mablethorpe. Thank you all for your support. We do hope you had some fun working out the answers and congratulations to our lucky winners.

DANGER DEFEND A NORTHERN GREEN ENVIRONMENTAL RIM This article is in response to the letter from the Secretary/Treasurer of Nettleham Football Club published in the Spring 2004 edition of Nettleham News.

We do not intend to respond line by line to the aforementioned correspondence, but to look at the broader picture as it affects the residents of Nettleham.

Proposed extension of sports facilities at Mulsanne Park, Nettleham, Lincolnshire The summary of this reply is that the case for the extension of the facilities at Mulsanne Park has not been made and little consideration seems to have been given to the alternative venues readily available for the alleged increase in demand for more space.

Sporting associations cannot assume that what they want is necessarily what the local community wants, especially in a village where the age gradient is probably more towards the over 50’s than the over 15’s. It is only democratic that all parishioners are properly consulted in any proposed alterations to their environmental surroundings.

To this end a Parish Public Meeting was held on the 10th April 2001 for just this purpose. Over 90% of the attendees voted against any further expansion at Mulsanne Park and only 8 persons out of over 100 were in favour of any change.

Due to the concerns of parishioners, West Lindsey District Council put some very strict conditions on the planning approval for “change of use” on the agricultural land adjacent to Mulsanne Park, currently owned by the Church Commissioners.

Since that time the Church Commissioners have repeatedly stated that the “agricultural land” wanted by the Parish Council on behalf of the Sports Association is NOT for sale.

It’s current valuation is between £50K and £100K, depending on whether you are a buyer or a seller. (This would of course exclude the cost of any development and landscaping).

In 2003, the Police Authority sportsfield, (2 football pitches,1 rugby pitch and tennis courts) on the other perimeter of the village was initially “put up for sale” and in September 2003 it was taken out of use altogether and the football teams, which had regularly rented the pitches, were no

longer permitted to do so.

Although the sportsfield is owned by the Police Authority, we have been told that, at the end of the day, it belongs to the Secretary of State, because it is funded through the public purse.

In the PA Policing Plan, Section A8-16 “Working with Partners” (page 30) it states: “By working with regeneration projects we can provide attractive public spaces that discourage criminal damage and anti-social behaviour ...... the long term social benefits will represent a far greater saving to us in years to come”.

Several attempts have been made by us to persuade the three parties involved (Nettleham Parish Council, the Police Authority and West Lindsey District Council) to get together to bring about a common-sense solution, but there has been no progress to date. (We are currently awaiting a response from the Police Authority.) We therefore have the rather silly situation in Nettleham that, on the one side of the village there is a proposed extension of a sportsfield which would cost tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds, whilst on the other side of the same village we have a redundant, ready-made sportsfield waiting to be reactivated!

Regarding the former, it would irresponsible of any parish or district council to currently sanction such expenditure and we are sure the rate-paying parishioners would be extremely concerned, especially when the two fields are within walking distance of one another. (Note: Every requested increase in the precept to fund a parish loan for sport, or anything else, is added to the community charge for the village - we do not get something for nothing! We believe that WLDC should be involved in any discussions, because in June 2003 the District Councillors adopted a Sports Strategy policy document, in which it’s 49

aims are clearly in conflict with any expansion at Mulsanne Park.

Here are a few quotes from the document: (a) “More heavily used or intensive sports and recreation facilities should be planned for locations served by public transport”.

Our comment: Over 90% of the users of Mulsanne Park come by car and from as far away as villages in West Lindsey, Lincoln city, Sleaford and Ruskington. (b) “Meet the regeneration needs of areas using brownfield sites in preference to greenfield sites.”

Our comment: A sure case for the regeneration of the PA sportsfield! (c) “Avoid any significant loss of amenity to residents, neighbouring uses and biodiversity.”

Our comment: The parishioners would expect WLDC to uphold this section of the policy, especially in such a village as Nettleham. (d) “There is a surplus of senior football pitches and a close balance between the current supply and demand for cricket pitches within West Lindsey” No comment necessary!

There is a lot more - and WLDC have been advised of the apparent conflict between this adopted policy and the aims of both Nettleham Parish Council and the Sports Association.

It is also worth noting that although users may come from all over the county and from the city of Lincoln, neither the City Council, nor West Lindsey District Council, make any contribution to the upkeep of Mulsanne Park.

The parishioners are, of course, represented on the Mulsanne Park Users Committee, as are the Football Club, but if any of the bodies mentioned above would like us to attend a

DANGER DEFEND A NORTHERN GREEN ENVIRONMENTAL RIM This is a report of a public meeting organised by the “DANGER” group & held in the Old School, Nettleham, on Monday the 29th March 2004.at 7pm.

The purpose of the meeting was to debate the proposal to site a wind turbine at the Star Energy site off Greetwell Lane, Nettleham.

Speaking for the installation was Tristan Mackie of Aliwind UK Ltd, advisers to Star Energy.

Speaking against the installation were Steve Taylor and John Hodson of AGAST (Action Group Against Star’s Turbines).

The Chairman, Chris Williams explained the reason for Danger’s existence, and how this subject fell within the remit of the organisation, before introducing the speakers to an audience of over 60 people.

Each speaker was allowed 20 minutes to make their presentations and then the audience asked questions until approximately 8.30pm, when the speakers made a summary.

For Star Energy: Tristan Mackie described very briefly the history of windpower generation that was first used to charge batteries in 1880 and gave details of the key components of the modern equivalent wind turbine.

The 1997 Kyoto Protocol promotes the reduction of the pollution which causes global warming gases, and encourages the contributions and derivation of skills arising from renewable energy application. The world is warming faster than at any time in the last 10,000 years, with Western emissions up by 20%.

The government is committed in its policy to meet a renewable energy obligation of 10% by the year 2010, with a reduction in coal and nuclear power (but not gas). A recent television programme stated the “UK has a clapped-out power generation system” and more environmentally friendly systems are needed as replacements.

Currently we get 647MW from 1,060 wind turbines, each a maximum of 100 metres in height. (The locations were shown on an overhead projector display which showed lots of green areas, all of which were potential sites for wind-turbines.)

The production and erection of these turbines is termed energy neutral as they repay their production energy use within 5 months!

The Health & Safety Executive has been approached on safety issues, but it will not be

involved until the proposals are given the go-ahead. There are some problems that need to be addressed, such as potential road accidents, low frequency sound, catastrophic rotor failures, radar interference and visual intrusion. There is no solution to the latter as it is purely subjective.

An Environmental Impact Statement (not study) has been produced which includes predictions on noise, aviation safety, TV interference and shadow flicker. The speaker claimed there was no detrimental effect on house prices in the areas adjacent to wind-turbines.

For Agast Steve Taylor said that Agast is not against wind power per se, but it is concerned about specific proposals and, as is the case for houses, the three most important concerns are, location, location and location! We need to understand Star Energy’s reasons for wanting them here.

East Midlands Regional Assembly has issued guidance stating that this is the least windy area in the UK and wind turbines have to be very large to be effective. It also seems that the existing Star Energy oilfields are very depleted and that their future may be in doubt.

As the sites have to eventually be returned to their original “green” condition this could prove very costly - why not defer the cost with a wind turbine installation?

The amount of energy derived from the wind turbines will be used by Star to push more gas into the depleted oil fields without knowing exactly where the gas will go.

There will be no contribution to the National Grid from the Star site-located wind turbines and there are serious financial considerations.

Electricity generated from wind power is 15% more expensive on the wholesale market and consequently has to be subsidised by being sold (in theory!) to the grid at £60 per MW/hr and bought back at £20 per MW/hr (on paper) which means it is a nice cash machine for Star, although they don’t make any actual contribution to the national grid. Wind turbines may become a monument to a very clever wheeze for our desire for renewable energy. Agast is against wind turbines in rural areas of Lincolnshire with the problems of noise, safety, commercial and visual impact.

Data issued by the British Wind Energy Association indicates that there is both high and low frequency noise emanating from a wind 50

turbine and this can lead to up to 50 times the normal pressure on eardrums, with some residents in Wales experiencing sickness as a result. Some of the blade frequencies coincide with natural vibrating frequencies of materials used in housing construction, which could lead to damage, if the properties are too close.

Any ejected projectiles from the failure of a wind turbine blade could travel 1,000ft horizontally. Wind turbines should not be located within three miles of any housing or in any areas where aircraft are landing and taking off. It has also been found at Humberside and Cornwall that there are few birds or animals to be found near the wind-farms.

If a 500MW power station were to be shut down, then it would need at least 1,500 wind turbines to replace it. Even then, the predicted power supply to modern power-hungry homes would be insufficient to meet demand.

The matter of underground gas storage (up to 2500psi) and gas migration is a very serious issue in the USA and it is banned in some locations (ie under housing). The proposed reservoir is, by nature, a very fractured one, as it has been subjected to maximum oil extraction techniques and we are left with the problems of erosion, corrosion, solid and sulphide emissions.

There will of course be an increase in the amount of plant and equipment on the site. This is a site of no strategic importance, which unfortunately comes very close to Nettleham village and Nettleham Fields housing estate.

Questions from the Audience (Summary only)

(1) Access roads and separation distances at Nettleham site?

The existing tarmac road would be used (it finishes up in Greetwell Lane farm) and measurements have been taken from the wind turbine base to the nearest house.

(2) We know they will affect property prices (recent press article) - why not put them in the North sea?

The engineering difficulties have to be resolved and there are environmental concerns for offshore installations too. Only 2% of power is to be from offshore.

(3) Gas injection: is it a new phenomenon and why did Star deny there was a gas element to the development last year? Would the incident in China be relevant?

A safety statement has been made to Lincolnshire County Council. A safety case has yet to be made.

(5) Are any wind turbines installed on working oil and gas plants in UK? (eg Shell or BP).

No but 3 or 4 are installed on a Total Plant in France (exact location not given).

(6) Was Star aware that wind turbine installation had been stopped in Europe, and Germany in particular, and were they also aware that an investigation into the health risks has been initiated by Defra?

Not answered.

(7) Has a Full Environmental Impact Study been carried out?

Legally it was not required, but it was included in the statement to Lincolnshire County Council.

(Agast: Sec of State overturned need for Star to produce FElS).

Summary Star: Global warming is going to affect us all. We are a power hungry society and local issues must be resolved. It is difficult, but it is our future.

Agast: The energy balance is absurd and the gas storage system is unique. Star is just a dirty oil/gas company trying to clothe itself in the mantle of respectability and project an environmentally friendly image. The company really needs to be more open.

The Chairman closed the meeting with the comments that we cannot rely on others to provide us with energy, as emerging nations also want their share. We must look at the problems for the benefit of our children and consider how we are going to maintain our energy reserves.

My comment: A very useful discussion, which could have gone on for very much longer! The meeting was (from the reactions to the questions and answers) very hostile to the Star Energy proposals and Agast received several rounds of applause, as did the questioners.

The following has been provided by Julie Bailey, a senior solicitor in the Family Law Team at Andrew & Co, Solicitors, Lincoln and is one of a series of articles dealing with subjects which may affect us during the course of our lives. n ever increasing number of couples are choosing to live together rather than marry. A commonly held belief is that after a period of time the law recognises the relationship between cohabiting couples in the same way as it recognises a marriage – a common law marriage.

A

That is not the case. As a consequence, cohabiting couples are not able to rely upon much of our family law legislation which has been enacted to deal with and resolve relationship issues. Instead they are forced to rely upon other areas of the law which can, in some cases, be cumbersome and costly.

The most common areas of dispute that arise are those relating to property and to any children that there may be. Property issues can arise whether the couple’s home is owned in both or only one of their names.

There are options available to couples who do not wish to get married. A sensible consideration for any cohabiting couple is to enter into a Cohabitation Agreement, which will set out in writing the details of their agreement as to how matters, including the ownership and running of their home, should be conducted both during their relationship and in the unfortunate event of its breakdown. Doing so will often avoid a later dispute, but in circumstances where matters do come

before a court, the Agreement will act as evidence of the couple’s intentions and be influential upon the court’s decision.

In the forefront of most parents’ minds, in the event of an irretrievable breakdown of their relationship, is the well being of their children. Whilst many couples are able to continue working together in bringing up their children, there are also instances where that is not possible. Many parents believe that they automatically share the legal rights and responsibilities relating to their children.

In fact where the child’s parents are unmarried, those rights and responsibilities are held only by the child’s mother. A court may grant them to an unmarried father.

Alternatively a couple can enter into a Parental Responsibility Agreement which places them in exactly the same legal position as a court order, often at a much lower cost, financially and emotionally.

These are just some of the many issues which cohabiting couples should consider and which, with advice and assistance from a solicitor, they can deal with and avoid unhappy and costly disputes. Prevention can so often be better than cure.

LOUD & CLEAR BECKSIDE PRE-SCHOOL TOLD BY OFSTED “BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET” What a perfect way to celebrate our first anniversary at the Early Years Unit. Just one year after we moved premises, we achieved a first class Ofsted Report.

The purpose of the inspection is to assure the government, parents and public of the quality and standard of day care, in accordance with the national standards for under 8’s day care, and that the nursery education for three and four year old children is of a good quality.

The inspectors also identify strengths and weaknesses, to enable pre-schools to improve the quality of educational provision and help children to achieve the early learning goals by the end of the Foundation Stage.

The inspectors were with us for two days and said they felt that it had been a privilege to come into our pre-school and to award us the top grade in both parts of the combined inspection - care and education. Judgement showed we have no weaknesses in any areas and that we should blow our own trumpet and let everybody know just how good we are.

With tears in their eyes the inspectors said, “Yes you really are that good. We are so pleased because we have never been in a position to give such a high grade before. It is a first for us too. Very few Pre-Schools manage to get the top grade.”

They went on to say that “The provision for personal, social and emotional development is excellent and the children are interested, confident, motivated and work well together in a group. They have high self-esteem and behave very well.” The inspectors were also impressed with the children’s language development and the way in which we made best use of our wall space to provide the opportunity for the children to see numbers, letters, shapes and patterns to stimulate their interest and imagination.

“Planning is outstanding, comprehensive and detailed. You have such a wealth and depth of knowledge. You should be congratulated, because this knowledge gives you a solid rock for the foundation on which you have built.

The quality of the teaching is excellent. The staff work well together as a team and are excellent role models, resulting in a very high standard of behaviour.”

It has taken a long time to get where we are and it hasn’t been easy. In fact it is very hard work. Debbie and I first worked together when we both applied for the same job at the Village Hall Playgroup m 1992. We both got the job and that is where we met Elaine Blake (the Playleader), from whom we learnt so much. Debbie and I went to the Beckside in 1998, when it was still at the Old Church Rooms. Jane Jokic joined us in 2000, a bright and bubbly young lady, who fitted in perfectly having the same views and ideas of working with children as we did. We then had another stroke of luck when Kath Gibson came to join us, with her fantastic artistic abilities and Elaine decided to come back, so that we could all work together again - the ‘A Team’. Jill Rushton and Mandy Blow also joined the team recently.

The inspectors commented on how well the children concentrate Jack focuses on making the wheels fit together an engineer of the future perhaps?

We really looked forward to the Ofsted Inspection, to have the opportunity to show them what we have achieved, so it was nice to have this achievement acknowledged. But we are not complacent - we have set a very high standard and must work hard to maintain it, to progress and to succeed in the future.

However, we have the magic ingredients - the support of great parents, lovely children and our absolutely brilliant staff.

he Alzheimer’s Society is the leading care and research charity for people with dementia , their carers and families in the UK, and 2004 marks its 25th Anniversary.

It was started in 1979 by two carers whose husbands had dementia, and who were concerned about lack of support, awareness and information about Alzheimer’s disease on offer for carers of people with dementia.

25 years ago few people had even heard of Alzheimer’s disease. However, during the last 25 years the Alzheimer’s Society has worked to change public attitudes to dementia and make people with dementia and their carers aware that they are entitled to help, support and respect.

The theme of this 25th Anniversary year is “It makes you think” - and the aim is to encourage as many people as possible to think about dementia. Much has been achieved in such a comparatively short time and research is moving ever closer to a cure. But as the population ages the number of people with dementia is increasing year on year. There is, of course, a great deal more to do. We need to get people thinking about dementia in order to help increase public support for the Society and ensure that the vital work of supporting people with dementia and their carers goes on.

Local Branch The Lincoln & District Branch is one of 7 local branches in Lincolnshire providing a service dedicated to the needs of people with dementia and their carers. Based at Park View, St Botolph’s Crescent, Lincoln, the Lincoln & District branch offers emotional and practical support, information and advice to people with all forms of dementia and their carers living within a 10-mile radius of Lincoln.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Week 4 - l0th July 2004 Dementia and Children Many children and young people think that anyone over twenty-five is ancient!

Twenty five years seems like forever to most children, and it would be unrealistic to think that the Alzheimer’s Society anniversary would mean much to school children.

However, in the next few years, one of the Society’s aims will be to make greater contact with the next generation. Today’s children and young people hold the future of the Alzheimer’s Society in their hands.

It’s up to all of us to help them understand what needs to be done.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Week this year is, therefore, focusing on dementia and children. It aims to help them understand what dementia is and how it might affect someone they know and care about. Excellent Improvement Results I am very pleased to be able to start with one excellent piece of news. As you may know, the government now reports on ‘value added’ in its league tables about examination results. This means that students’ progress from one key stage to the next is measured.

In the recent tables, Cherry Willingham Community School came third in the whole county (out of some 63 schools altogether) in the amount of improvement our students had made between the key stage 3 SATs examinations (at the end of year 9) and the key stage 4 GCSE examinations (at the end of year 11). This is a very significant achievement, particularly because we are a true comprehensive school, competing against all sorts of other schools, including grammar schools. It is the result of a lot of hard work by both students and staff, with support from parents. Well done!

We are starting a new initiative in school: ‘Target Setting Day’ where the main idea is that all students will attend with one or more of their parents, in order to discuss progress with the child’s form tutor and set targets for real improvement. The targets themselves will be few in number, but the aim is to make them really useful ones which will help students to move forward and make progress.

Year 10 News Congratulations to the twenty-one students in Year 10 who have been awarded recently with their certificates for 100% attendance throughout the whole of last term - an outstanding achievement. Will even more students receive this accolade for their attendance this term?

Students are being kept on their toes by form tutors during morning registration by way of a weekly form quiz. Although intended as a light-hearted bit of fun, it has provoked a healthy level in inter-form rivalry and competition, with each form stopping at nothing to ensure that they get the best score each week! 10SP currently lead the way, but must be reminded that the competition runs for many weeks and is therefore a marathon and not a sprint!

Eight students in Year 10 have been selected to represent the school in the Year 10 Challenge Plus Day later this month. It is an annual event that aims to bring together the most able students from across the county, providing a unique opportunity to develop their communication and team-working skills alongside similar students from other schools.

Additionally, this one-day event helps participants to address crucial and relevant issues as they set about preparing for a successful future.

HEALTHIER EATING In response to the government’s intention to ‘audit’ secondary school eating facilities to increase and encourage healthy eating trends, we are one step ahead - having already removed the chocolate and fizzy drinks from our menu completely.

Two new vending machines are also in operation (one for hot drinks the other for food) which helps to keep the queues down at break times.

I heard the cuckoo today and the swallows have returned, the cockerel is crowing earlier each morning and the bees are drawn by the heady scent of wallflowers in my cottage garden. June is here and the dark days of winter are long gone.

But, unfortunately, this is also the time for wasps, spoiling a picnic, hovering round litter bins and dustbins. Favourite places for wasps nests are airbricks, sheds and in hedges (ready to attack the unsuspecting hedge trimmer) or maybe just a simple hole in the ground. Although wasps can be easily dealt with by an experienced person, it is not advisable to attempt to destroy the nest yourself. Wasps can be extremely dangerous if provoked. Some things are better left to the expert.

Having had 30 years’ experience, 25 of which were spent with WLDC working from the depot on Crescent Close, I am well versed in the ways of belligerent wasps. Better known as ‘The Ratman’ by many local residents, I have had to deal not only with wasps and rats, but also with fleas, ants, moles, rabbits, mice and squirrels - in fact anything that can be classed as a pest.

You may recall, years ago, the yellow van passing through the streets of Nettleham and in the passenger seat my terrier - Belle.

She is still working with me. I am now self employed, operating from home but still offering the service I have given local residents for a quarter of a century.

NETTLEHAM PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP Some new children joined us and settled in very quickly, soon becoming involved and absorbed in all that there was to do. Spring Term started with a weather theme which involved lots of creativity, activities and experiments.

Just before February half term our theme was people who help us. The home corner was changed into a supermarket, a garage and a dentist’s waiting room. The children enjoyed pretending to be supermarket staff (scanning the groceries and taking the money), mechanics fixing cars and checking each other’s teeth as dentists. The highlight of the theme was a visit by the local police. PC’s Lassmans and Smalley let the children climb in the police car, sound the siren and see all their exciting radio equipment.

As a thank you the children drew some beautiful pictures of the visit to send them.

This half term the theme is ‘my senses’. We are making binoculars to look through, shakers to listen to, as well as tasting and smelling fruit and vegetables. We are also setting plants in our garden and look forward to them growing to make it look even more attractive.

Another exciting venture is a course of musical workshops for the children and their parents, courtesy of soundLINCS - Lincolnshire Music Development Agency. This enables both children and parents to develop their musical skills and confidence, so that we can explore music-making at home. The children are really enjoying experimenting with new instruments with Shelley, the co-ordinator. They are thinking

about high and low notes, loud and soft sounds.

The course will conclude with a performance called the Mini Melt.

In March the children had their annual Sponsored Nursery Rhyme Singalong, which was a huge success. The children dressed as their favourite nursery rhyme character and parents came along to listen to the songs. This enjoyable event also raised money to be used for new equipment. Many thanks to all involved.

After Easter the playgroup welcomed a new member of staff, Pauline Randall, who has

worked at the playgroup before, so Pauline settled in really quickly.

Looking forward to the end of the term, the children will be able to enjoy a trip to Sundown Park, a Teddy Bears Picnic, Sports Day and taking part in the Nettleham Carnival.

It has been suggested by a reader that Nettleham News has perhaps not given a balanced and impartial view in publishing arguments for the developments which Star Energy are currently proposing in the area and in order to redress this imbalance, the following statement from Stewart Reast, Managing Director of Star Energy is included Recent discussion of our gas storage proposals by West Lindsey District Council’s Planning Committee - according to reports in the local media - may well have given rise to unnecessary fear within the local community.

Concern over the level of misunderstanding apparent amongst the few councillors who were quoted is such that I feel I must offer some clarity for the benefit of councillors throughout the area.

I hope, therefore, that the following is of assistance to you.

Beyond all else, can I make it absolutely clear that my Company would not contemplate any new activity that posed a safety threat to the local community or, our own employees. Indeed, we would not be allowed to do so by the Health and Safety Executive who regulate our activities with great vigour.

Let me then answer some questions posed in press reports of the planning meeting: Are we planning to store “lethal gas”?

It is apparent that many people are not aware that gas exists naturally within a typical oilfield. It is because those natural levels have diminished over time that we are seeking to import gas from the national transmission system. The situation is, therefore, one of “no change”.

Hydrogen sulphide is a natural element in both the oil and gas in the Welton field and it does have to be controlled. BP designed this facility to handle hydrogen sulphide and it has never been a problem. The new process facilities will also be designed to handle hydrogen sulphide. In fact the quantities of hydrogen sulphide in the new scheme will be far less than currently handled.

Could we experience a disaster on a “massive” scale as occurred in China last year?

The simple answer is “no”. Beyond all else, the operations are completely different in that the Chinese incident occurred at a drilling operation and not a gas storage facility. The Chinese facility was by no means “state-of-the-art” in that vital safety equipment had been removed and the management was clearly inept. I would like to include a cutting from The International Oil &

Gas Newspaper UPSTREAM, which states from the official investigation: “Catalogue of Errors” “Cost-Cutting was in part to blame for the horrific accident at Xiaoyang in December, according to the official investigation. A blow out preventer on the well had been removed in an apparent effort to extend its operational life. Eastern Sichuan Drilling Company (ESDC) employees were criticised for not using sufficient drilling fluids - this allegedly affected pressure levels - and for failing to ignite the gas to prevent the toxic cloud from spreading. Six workers have been arrested and charged with criminal negligence, and there has been talk of sacking CNPC president M A Fucai, although this now looks unlikely.

The investigation report claims that the lack of effective communication probably added to the death toll. The report also notes that delayed communications from ASDC workers to the superiors meant that valuable minutes were lost, as no one wanted to take responsibility for handling the accident. About 20 employees were at Luojia, 16 when the blow-out occurred, but apparently five of them simply fled to a nearby villager’s house, seemingly more concerned with their own safety than trying to mitigate the damage. It is understood that the drilling crew accounted for 2 of the victims”

Does our application pay enough attention to safety issues?

At this stage of the project “yes”. As the project develops into the front end engineering design stage (FEED) there will be a multi-stage Health Safety and Environment review, in addition to complying with such regulations as Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) and Integrated Preventative Pollution Control (IPPC). All the agencies that police our industry have been fully involved from the early stages of the project and will continue to do so.

I would also like it to be known at this time that all the staff who currently operate the existing Welton Oilfield were instrumental in the overseeing of the design, construction, commissioning and operation of the largest onshore gas field in the UK, with reserves of 100 bscf. This also includes the laying of an 11km 10” high pressure gas pipeline to the Theddlethorpe Gas Terminal on the Lincolnshire coast, and so we believe we have the necessary expertise to oversee this project.

I have not gone into great technical detail here, but I am very happy to provide a more detailed and personal briefing for any councillor who remains concerned about the safety of our proposed project.

In the oil and gas industry the removal of a blow out preventer during a drilling operation, would be a cardinal sin, and is unheard of. The risks being taken during such an operation only contributed to the disaster.

Is the proposed gas storage activity experimental?

Enclosed with this article was a copy of Star Energy’s newsletter “Energy Matters” (November 2003 edition) which covers many more aspects of the current local proposals in much greater detail.

By no means. Experts have been saying for some time that the UK badly needs to store more gas, in order to secure supplies during periods of peak demand. Other facilities have already been established - Rough Gas Storage off the coast of Lincolnshire, Hatfield Moors near Doncaster and there are numerous salt caverns used for storing gas. My own Company has also recently secured permission for a similar operation near Alton in Hampshire. Councillors there have been completely reassured over safety issues.

HELP LIVES It’s been a very busy time for the Nettleham First Responders with nearly 30 call-outs so far this year, ranging from patients suffering with breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, fits and strokes, to chest pains and heart attacks.

We endeavour to run the scheme 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with any ‘off line’ time being extremely minimal.

To assist us in maintaining this level of coverage, we are currently trying to recruit new responders for the village.

helper or a fundraiser. At the present time it costs about £1,600 per year to keep a scheme like ours up and running, so please spare us some of your time.

Why do we need First Responders?

Nettleham is about 4 miles from Lincoln and an ambulance, with its sirens and flashing lights, can reach any address in about 8 to 12 minutes depending on road conditions and availability. The problem is if someone suffers a severe heart attack - they could die before it arrives.

What is a First Responder?

A First Responder is a communitybased volunteer who is trained to respond to any life-threatening medical emergency (chest pains, breathing difficulties and unconscious persons) in Nettleham and give early basic life support and defibrillation if required prior to the paramedics’ arrival.

How does the system work?

When a 999 call is received at ambulance headquarters, not only is an ambulance dispatched to the casualty’s location, but if the request is deemed to be a life-threatening emergency they also contact the ‘on call’ First Responder in Nettleham, who is instructed to attend. Whilst the ambulance is on its way, the First Responder will be able to start giving vital early basic life support and improve the casualty’s chances of survival.

Nettleham Ladies Club Once again, there was a grand turn-out of people for the Spring fayre which was held on Saturday 8th May 2004. The staggering amount of £1,500 was raised for Nettleham LIVES First Responder scheme. Fantastic!

I would like to thank all the businesses of Nettleham and the surrounding area for their generous gifts and donations, also our members, their families and friends who helped on the day.

Nettleham Student Entrepreneur Streetshirts (www.streetshirts.co.uk) is an internet business started and run by local resident Steve Winn.

Steve has spent most of his life in Nettleham.

He went to the village Infant and Junior Schools, on to Willliam Farr and is now in his 4th year at Leeds University, studying medicine.

The Spring and start of the Summer term has seen much activity by the Friends. A highly successful Ceilidh (Barn Dance to most of us!) was held in February. It’s amazing how many people have two left feet!! A great time was had by all (including “The Little Band”) and almost £400 was raised to be spent back on the pupils. Judging by the demand, it looks likely that there will be another next year.

Steve, like most students, found that student life exceeded his budget! So he began to look for ways to supplement his income, and hit on the idea of setting up an internet business. A far cry from doing a paper round for Phil and working at the Black Horse with Tom and Clare Rankin!

So, he came up with Streetshirts. Steve used his knowledge of Information Systems to design the website and it is one of the most successful T-shirt companies on the web at the moment.

Streetshirts prides itself in offering not only high quality designs, but also in offering a high quality service with customers’ needs being paramount. The T-shirts are limited to 100 of each and the designs are not available elsewhere. Steve and the team also aim to promote an awareness of Science and Living Organisms through its range of clothing and merchandise.

Some of the designs are thought-provoking, some are funny, some make a statement, but most of all the T-shirts are wearable and cool in every sense of the word. They look good on anyone. The photographs show

In spite of a lot of talent on the Friends Committee, we were too shy to get on the stage for the highly successful and enjoyable school Extravaganza in April.

Healing not Cure Recent surveys suggest that virtually everyone prays at some time or another even people who don’t believe in God! And most people are most likely to pray when they are facing some kind of crisis or a serious illness.

Now in recent years a new term has emerged among those working with the seriously ill - Spiritual Pain.

The idea of physical, mental or emotional pain has been around for a long time, but spiritual pain includes all of these and yet it is more than just the sum of them all.

Spiritual pain affects the whole of a person’s being and can make all the other forms of pain worse. It’s a pain that is often experienced by people discovering they have an incurable condition, but before they have become reconciled to it, or when facing terminal illness with all sorts of unresolved conflicts in their lives.

People find relief from spiritual pain by talking things through, by praying, by knowing that others are praying for them or by being prayed with. Prayer can also have an effect on mental, emotional and physical pain, and in some situations people who have been prayed for find that their quality of life improves, their illness responds more quickly or more completely, inner conflicts and other issues become resolved.

Proving that prayer is the effective cause of these improvements is, of course, extremely difficult, but not everything of value can be analysed scientifically. Members of the three churches in the village do believe in the value of prayer, and in a loving God

who works to bring healing to individuals and to the wider society. So each church has opportunities for people to be prayed for or prayed with.

The focus of this prayer is on healing not cure. Healing is bigger and broader than cure. Healing includes the relief of pain, a greater sense of peace and the kind of spiritual wholeness that can come to someone, who may be terminally ill, but has become reconciled to their situation.

Healing includes knowing that others support and care for you, that you are loved and valued. Healing can also include recovering and getting better or learning to live with something that is ultimately life threatening. Healing may include the release of guilt or fear and broken relationships reconciled. Sometimes healing is the peaceful end of life.

Another Imaginative Idea Margaret Burn of Orchard Way called me to tell me about an imaginative idea which had occurred to her as a result of being short of tableware!

Apparently she was having guests for a meal at her home and found that she simply didn’t have enough table-mats to match the number of guests.

Looking around for a substitute at the last moment, her eyes fell upon a couple of copies of Nettleham News magazines which were lying around and which she quickly placed on the table to make up the number required.

During the course of the evening a guest was heard to say “What lovely table-mats, wherever did you get them?”.

Margaret suddenly realised that the guest was actually referring to the colourful Nettleham News covers!

So there you are - an idea for someone to produce as Christmas presents, perhaps in a set of six. I would be pleased for the front covers to be used for this purpose, if anyone wishes to develop this novel and creative idea.

In January this year they launched a new venture Lindum Heritage, a business which offers special-interest weekend breaks in Lincoln.

You never know what you might find!

The weekend breaks cater for anyone interested in the past and are taught by professional archaeologists and historians, who are not only expert in their chosen field, but enjoy sharing their knowledge in a friendly and supportive way. The courses are always taught in small groups - never more than sixteen people.

Through Lindum Heritage, Craig and Zoe provide a series of exciting and stimulating short breaks. They have a passion for archaeology and history which they want to share. Through books, films and television programmes, such as ‘Time Team’, many people have been introduced to, and fascinated by, archaeology and history.

Lindum Heritage will enable you to develop this enthusiasm one step further.

Every weekend break begins with a wine reception on the Friday evening, giving you a chance to meet Craig and Zoe and the other people on your course. A further social event takes place on Saturday evening, when they host a dinner in one of Lincoln’s fine restaurants.

If the course has a special guest lecturer, they will also normally attend the dinner.

Both Craig and Zoe are very enthusiastic about the new proposed Nettleham Heritage Trail (see page 21) and are looking forward to taking an active part in the Medieval Garden Project.

John McGall (Irish John) 24th March 1962 to 29th April 2004 A greatly loved character from the village, Irish John (42), sadly lost his 10-year battle against cancer at Lincoln County hospital on 29th April. John bravely fought the disease, maintaining his independence and normal way of life right up to his death.

He never complained, despite his pain and suffering. John loved living in Nettleham.

Well known for his alternative attitude to life, John achieved many things in his 42 years including 6 months on the Kibbutz in Israel, hairdressing, extensive travel around Europe and America, insurance salesman, a degree in business, a tennis court restorer and a promoter of the Mongolian State circus.

A memorial trophy for John McGall has been purchased by the Brown Cow pool team and a pool competition will be played every year in early May, in memory of John.

A memorial bench may be erected on the village green to commemorate John, subject to permission by the Parish Council.

He was also an extremely good barman at local public houses, a lover of the pub and one who took great delight in winning the weekly quiz. A practical joker and lover of puzzles (he was most famous for his ‘chair trick’), he was also an enthusiastic and accomplished dancer.

He was a great friend to Bill Corley and to many others too, and a love to Jo. Despite John having been taken to Ireland for his final resting place, his heart remains in Nettleham and the village provided him with a good send-off in the way in which he was accustomed. The following efforts should be acknowledged: A service held in the Plough public house, at the same time as the funeral took place in Ireland, during which Harold Rothwell summed up what John meant to his many close friends and provided a moving tribute to John and his contribution to life in the village. Many thanks to Keith and Lee Stephenson for the proceeds from the bar on the day, which has been donated to cancer research via the funeral directors in Ireland.

A collection for cancer research in memory of John, commenced on the day of his funeral in the Plough, which, together with the takings from the bar, totalled £442.

THE NETTLEHAM PIGEONS Not everyone likes pigeons, and yet they can be delicious when cooked properly.

However, there’s no doubt that they can be a bit tough, which is presumably why they are commonly known as ‘Wood Pigeons’ well they wood be, woodn’t they!

Generally they are of the ‘Columbidia’ family, which presumably is the cause of their ‘Mafia’-like arrogance and attitude.

They are often seen flying at very high attitudes indeed! It was Christopher Columbidia who brought them back from America, or, then again, perhaps he took them to America, in which case he didn’t take enough, as we have far too many here now!

Their main use to mankind, so far, has been for carrying messages. This came about thanks to the invention of paper by the Chinese, which itself came about with the need to find something cheaper than cloth in which to wrap the Chow Fan, or Chow Mein, before using it to wipe up pigeon droppings!

Initially, a great deal of time and effort was expended to try and teach the pigeons to talk, because, in the very early days, carrying messages written on stone or slate meant that you needed a small flock, or at least half a dozen birds each carrying a few words only, because of the weight problems. You could weight for hours to make sure that the whole message arrived, and spend further time piecing it together to make some sort of sense!

It couldn’t go on indefinitely causing misunderstandings, and was scarcely better than the old relay-running messengers. A near-disastrous fault there was revealed with the classic misunderstanding in the Punic wars, when a message was sent from the front: ‘Send reinforcements, we are going to advance.’ When received at HQ it had subsequently become: ‘Send three and fourpence, we’re going to a dance!

Sadly, teaching Pigeons to talk was a total failure. The first attempt, was rewarded by a feeding of corn, to which the doves and pigeons both said “Coo!” That seemed like

progress, but food was the only incentive, and “Coo” was enough to get some. Now, although their brain is small, it is big enough to realise that nothing more was needed. Hundreds of variations of ‘Coos’ have been identified, but those making a study of it have invariably gone mad - or ‘Coo-Coo’! (I think this is affecting the author!)

Meanwhile, early man had noticed that a similar bird was too incompetent to build itself a nest, and had resorted to laying its eggs in other birds’ nests, taking ‘The Mickey’ out of the pigeons by mocking them, calling out “Coo-Coo!” Please pay attention! This is ‘Orni-thology!’ as opposed as to ‘Higher-theology!

The pigeon can make good eating, once having overcome their innate ‘toughness’, on which there has already been comment, and, in France, it can make a welcome change from the traditional ‘Four and Twenty Blackbirds Pie’.

It was a speciality of ‘Pie-Jean’ the famous Chef of ‘Louis-Quatorze’ perhaps better known as ‘The Son King’, because of his father ‘Louis the Trays’. Pie-Jean’s life as a chef (or anything else, come to think of it) ended when he presented a giant ‘Pie- Jean’ pie, and when it was opened the pigeons therein weren’t thoroughly cooked and they began to flutter about, singing “Coo-coocoo!” The King didn’t think that this was ‘a dainty dish’, and Pie-Jean, the chef, quite lost his head - they didn’t mess about with that ‘guillotine’! When you ‘got the chop’ it was lethal!

Strange the course of fate! Had the King tried eating some of the pie, it might have killed him, which perhaps would not have been a bad thing, historically speaking, rendering ‘The Revolution’ unnecessary!

A less than obvious part of the Pigeon family is the Pigeon Toad. This is a giant creature, which has now lost the power of free flight, but with its inward-facing feet and mighty thighs it can leap high and glide in the air. Unfortunately, due to its heavy landings, it knocks the wind out of itself, which renders it unable to ‘Coo’ and only muster an oath at a croak! It is carnivorous and eats other members of the pigeon

family if it can catch them. Nature is almost unbelievably cruel at times!

Similarly, almost unbelievable, is the ‘Pigeon Chest’. This, in the days of sailing ships was a sturdy, wooden, storage, travelling chest. It contained tightly sealed personal supplies and essentials in case of mishap. It was stowed on the deck, having a weighted ‘pigeon-breast’ shaped lid, or ‘boat’ with a recessed bottom which in water turned and floated upright to provide a personal life-boat.

A more familiar association is ‘The Pigeon Post’. Interestingly, or perhaps not, this was a common thing when ‘Royal Mail’ was more reliable, and overweight pigeons, loaded with bread, yet still wanting to visit distant relatives, would put an address label round their necks, squeeze through the post box slot, and await the evening collection.

This was a frequent happening in inclement weather. It is less so nowadays due to the delivery problems being experienced by The Royal Mail.

That is why so many pigeons, who have lost their labels, are aimlessly hanging around all the London railway stations, and many local ones too. It is a National Disgrace! Although your average pigeon is quite clever in some ways, if it develops a ‘glitch’ in its guidance system, it is lost!

Recently a famous ‘Royal’ racer turned up in southern Spain, complaining of the heat.

He was supposed to be in Iceland, had quite ‘lost it’ and was going round offering his ‘kingdom for a Norse!’

The Queen of England has her own Pigeon Lofts, and a ‘Pigeon Manager’. It is little known, but true! Her manager has been putting much effort into producing a strain of ‘warrior pigeon’ trained to kill grey squirrels, and use a toilet. A promising development to date is for it to monitor conversations, and report back. It is called a ‘Stool Pigeon!
