Autumn again and probably my favourite season of the year, when the frantic growth and reproduction phase of the year is over and Mother Nature seems to lounge comfortably back, heave a deep sigh of relief and gaze contentedly at the fruits of all her efforts over the past few months.

Crops have been harvested, fruit hangs heavily in the orchards and hedgerows and the vegetable garden yields its produce in abundance. Which brings me rather nicely on to the next topic...

The Nettleham Gardeners Show Every year in September, the village is treated to a wonderful display of the best of the produce from gardens across the village in the Annual Nettleham Gardeners Show.

You really should go along to see the lovely arrangements of flowers and vegetables which are on display. Better still, why not enter some yourself - the organizers are always pleased to welcome entries and you could walk off with one of the numerous trophies, shields and medals which are awarded annually.

A copy of the Schedule which specifies the various open groups and categories in which you can enter as a non-member, is reproduced on page 27.

This is one of our traditional village events, which has now been staged for many years going back into history. Which brings me rather nicely on to the next topic...

History of the Village The photograph of the Water Tower on the front cover of the last edition (summer) of Nettleham News, prompted a telephone call from a person who lived in and around the village for many years and has some intriguing and amusing stories to tell.

And it doesn’t end there - his own story is closely entwined with another interesting theme which is particularly topical and controversial at the present time. Turn to page 41 and see who the person is and what the controversial issue could be.

Refuse Disposal You may be wondering the purpose of the disk, which appears on the front cover of the magazine.

Well, apparently the excellent refuse disposal service, which the village receives every first and third Saturday of the month via the refuse truck on Greetwell Lane (and which we, as residents pay for through our local taxes), is being increasingly used by people from outside the village as a very convenient (and free!) means of disposing of their own domestic refuse. If this trend continues, it may eventually be that you, as a bona fide resident of Nettleham, will arrive with your rubbish one fine Saturday morning, only to find that the truck is already full to the brim and you may be turned away and have to return home with your refuse!

Since Nettleham News is delivered to every household within the Nettleham Parish boundary, it ensures that every household will receive one of these “passes”. Cutting out the disk (which is the same size as a tax disk) and displaying it in the windscreen of your vehicle when you go to dispose of your refuse, will confirm your legitimate right to use this service.

Competition Page Any reader of the magazine, whether from Nettleham or outside the parish, is eligible to enter the competitions which appear from time to time in the magazine.

Many thanks to the many readers who sent in entries to the crossword competition which appeared in the summer edition of the magazine. It was so nice to receive some entries after the zero response for the spring 2003 edition. The winner and the solution are printed on page 35, together with a new crossword, again kindly devised

by Eric Burton.

On the same page there is also a humorous caption competition. Both competitions have a £10 prize - so when you have a few spare minutes, perhaps commuting into Lincoln on the bus - have a go!

Bus Timetables A number of readers have suggested that it would be helpful to have time-tables of buses serving the village published in Nettleham News. This has been done in some past editions, but our difficulty is that time-tables change and the alteration dates do not always coincide with those of this quarterly publication. They can thus become misleading.

However, MASS Transit, PC Coaches and Road Car have been approached and their time-tables, reproduced on page 19, will almost certainly be valid until at least the 31st December 2003.

I hope in the future you will all use this identity disk - it may help to expose those who are taking advantage of this service, but who have no legitimate right to do so!

Please note that copies of their time-tables may almost always be obtained, on request, from the drivers of buses of the three companies, when passengers travel on any of them.

Parking in the Village

One gets quite a different view of life from the top deck of a bus and one of our village’s least-appreciated assets suddenly becomes more apparent from up there.

Wasn’t it just a glorious day! Probably the hottest of the year to date and the crowds turned out in their thousands to enjoy the sun (and themselves) at this annual village event on the Green.

Yes, it’s that old chestnut again!

I’m sure many of you will have seen the article in the Friday 27 June 2003 edition of the Lincolnshire Echo, which featured one of our village residents - John Blakely.

In this article he explained at length about his great ambition to restore the mediaeval gardens to their former glory at the site of the Bishops’ Palace field in the village (which, as I’m sure most of you already know, is the field next to the Methodist Chapel on High Street - the one with all the grassy knolls).

An article about the carnival, with lots of photographs appears on page 32/33, so if you were there on the day, you may even be in one of them! It is on such a day that it is very difficult to remember what winter is like with frost, snow and ice about.

Which brings me rather nicely on to the next topic...

The Christmas edition The next edition of Nettleham News will, I trust, be delivered to your door in early December, just in time to give you a good read over the Christmas holiday. So I am looking for lots of items for inclusion in the magazine - particularly those of a festive and seasonal nature.

I don’t need to list all the possibilities - they are simply endless and just need a little bit of effort to get them down on paper (or on-screen!) and send them to me (by hand, post or email) at the above address.

I frequently receive compliments on the quality and content of the magazine, but I always reply that this is largely due to the remarkable variety of material I receive from village residents.

Patiently, tirelessly and passionately he has pursued this quest with all the relevant government agencies and authorities and now it seems that it may well become a reality in the not-too-distant future.

It is my intention to interview John again and keep you up to date in future editions of this magazine with what could be a really exciting (in fact one could say ground-breaking!) community project for the village.

You will see from the Parish Council notes on page 13, that the police are now actively concerned about speeding in the village and intend to take the necessary action to control it. At last it has been officially acknowleged that traffic speed has now reached an unacceptable level and presents a real danger to both drivers and residents.

The same thing could be said for parking take a look at the third paragraph on page 59 and I think you may be rather surprised to discover that this problem was identified 22 years ago.

People still continue to park indiscriminately (particularly large commercial vehicles) in the most inappropriate places and with utter disregard for other road users or pedestrians who, by the actions of these selfish individuals, are exposed to more danger than they might otherwise be.

Church Street continues to be a bus route and these are large vehicles for our narrow village streets to accommodate at the best of times. Badly parked vehicles aggravate the situation, impeding their progress and creating even more danger and frustration for everyone.

Litter

The magazine naturally reflects the very character of the village and its residents - so if it’s dull and boring ... well I need say no more!

I was delighted to see that the bench seat outside the Old School, which had been vandalised, has now been replaced with a brand new one. Long may it stay that way.

But, on the day I happened to pass it at close quarters, there, underneath it, was a miscellaneous and unsightly collection of drink cans, crisp packets, etc.

The Village Hall It has been said that nothing much of any interest goes on in Nettleham.

I do hope you all give John your full support in this initiative and help in any way you can - it offers a very special and unique opportunity, which few other villages around the country have, so let’s make the most of it. Sometimes it takes a community with singular determination and common purpose to achieve and continue something special.

Well, the folks who run the Village Hall want to put all that right and are seeking your views and suggestions about what sort of things you would like to see going on there. On page 21, there is a form which gives you the chance to have your say on the subject - do please take the time to complete and return it, (or alternatively email Rod Stainton), so that some progress can be made.

I put it down to an all too common condition these days known as osteo-inertia (bone-idleness). Most of us like to live in a clean, tidy and safe environment and consider Nettleham to be a very attractive village - let’s keep it that way Which brings me rather nicely on to the last topic...

Village Flowers What about all the colourful flowers in the village this year! A delightful sight for everyone. Congratulations must go to all concerned for their efforts - they are much appreciated by all the residents.

11 Highfields Nettleham On page 37 of the spring 2003 edition of the magazine, information was sought about any of the trees on the Green.

Before he died, Bill Needham told me that his class at school was taken, on some royal celebration (probably around 1935), to see the Horse Chestnut (number 11 on the plan) and the Walnut (number 8) both planted.

When the Parish Council were asked which type of tree they wanted to celebrate the 1982 ‘Best Kept Village’ award, there was a split vote with the majority favouring the Oak (number 13), which later died and was subsequently replaced a couple of years later.

One Councillor, who had originally voted for a Redwood, bought one himself for the Green (number 1) and donated it to the village.

Ducks Again!

I would agree with the comments made in the summer edition of Nettleham News that there are considerably fewer ducks around the Beck area.

The reason for this is because they are more widely spread around the village and, not unnaturally, congregate where people provide them with food and water.

A well-meaning neighbour carries out this service, as a result of which there has been an increasing number of ducks and their broods in the immediate vicinity this year.

We are regularly woken at dawn by loud quacking and have to watch carefully where we tread, due to the large quantity of duck droppings around!

To prevent this matter getting out of hand, I would ask people to think twice about encouraging ducks in any way at all either at the Beck or in their back gardens!

Nettleham Gardeners' Association Annual Show Once again, for the members of the Nettleham Gardeners' Association, it is the culmination of a year’s hard work to compete in the Annual Show held in the Village Hall on Saturday 6th September.

An anxious look around the garden or allotment soon reveals what could be ready for the competition.

The hot weather of late has advanced the growing season of a lot of plants and fruit, so will we have a few surprises this year?

The Wine, Flower Arranging and Home Produce competitions are open classes, so, all you ladies (and gentlemen?), who think you can bake a better cake or make a better jam than our worthies, I challenge you to enter and prove it.

Don’t just fill the Church with your Flower Arrangements, show us how good you are by entering a display in one of the classes.

For our members, don’t leave it to the regular entrants, remember, the plant sitting on your windowsill stands just as much chance of winning as any other.

Pedestrian refuges on the A46 to the west of Nettleham I write as a resident of Nettleham who has lived in this large village north of Lincoln for the last 17 years. I have an interest in road safety, both for motorists and pedestrians at county level, and indeed as part of a national concern the safety of walkers using public footpaths which cross busy main roads.

It is well documented that roads in Lincolnshire are becoming busier, both in terms of the volume of traffic and also in the length of time they are heavily used. This is especially true of the approaches to Lincoln, with the growth of the outlying commuter communities in the Traffic to Work Area such as Saxilby, Welton, Sturton-by-Stow, Dunholme and Nettleham.

Others could, of course, point to other pressure points, but this is the one about which I have greatest personal knowledge and experience.

The increased volume and frequency of traffic is one factor in Lincolnshire’s poor road safety record and high casualty rates, although this is a much more complex issue than one of growth alone. One consequence of growth impacts directly on pedestrians - that it is increasingly difficult to cross many roads, especially where there are no traffic calming or controlling measures such as speed restrictions, roundabouts or traffic lights.

The Nettleham example is doubtless replicated in countless other communities across the county and the country. Put quite simply, it is now extremely hazardous crossing the A46 by foot from the bus-stop opposite The Brown Cow,

especially in the evening rush hour in the winter months. It is equally dangerous at three other points where the Nettleham pavements link in with rural footpaths or minor roads on the west side of the highway. In consequence, villagers are deterred from using certain bus services and also from making full use of some delightful public footpaths connecting with Old Hall Lane and Riseholme Lane. Users of the Sustrans network are also placed in some peril.

The specific points on the A46 in the Nettleham area are, from south to north, as follows: 1. At the lay-by used by north-bound buses opposite The Brown Cow; 2. At the Washdyke Lane junction (connecting with the footpath to Riseholme); 3. At the Riseholme Lane junction (connecting with the footpath around the County Police Headquarters); 4. At the Deepdale Lane junction (connecting with the footpath to Old Hall Lane).

I have experienced all these crossings many times over the years, alone and with family and friends. My views and the following suggested recommendations come from being a motorist, occasional early morning jogger, regular stroller and passive member of the Ramblers Association. My suggestion is that all four locations would benefit from new, carefully placed and well-lit pedestrian refuges which would serve a quadruple purpose: a. protecting pedestrians, walkers and bus-users wishing to use the footpaths and bus-stop to the west of the A46; b. protecting motorists making right turns at points 2, 3 and 4 on the attached plan; c. protecting cyclists crossing at point 3 (Riseholme Lane);

d. building on the recent work of the Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department, which has provided new road markings to improve lane discipline as part of overall traffic management schemes in this increasingly populous area.

Clearly, there is a great deal more to building a series of pedestrian refuges than fixing them in position. As well as budget and timing, there would be issues of signage and perhaps a small amount of path laying on the west side of the A46, to link in with other routes. However, I would suggest that a cluster of pedestrian refuges would be less expensive than most other forms of road safety improvement. Indeed there are already examples of what I have in mind further down the A46 in Nottinghamshire, south-west of Newark.

In recent months there has been one fatality between Nettleham and the Lincoln by-pass.

Members of my family have also witnessed near-misses at the Deepdale Lane junction. I am also well aware of people disinclined to walk west of the A46 due to the safety considerations of crossing what has effectively become a three lane road in places.

Obviously the implementation of traffic calming and road safety schemes costs money, but so does any accident. Also, we should not ignore the positive physical and mental health benefits of individuals being able to access footpaths more safely. In cost benefit terms, four refuges on the A46 at Nettleham could be a very good investment.

I would be pleased to show any interested public bodies the exact locations of these proposals in preparation for their more expert deliberations.

HELP LIVES The LIVES Nettleham First Responders scheme celebrated its first birthday back in March and to mark the occasion an anniversary newsletter was delivered to every address in the village.

It contained information about the Nettleham First Responder Scheme and introduced the responders and fundraisers with photographs in a ‘rogue’s gallery’ (some better than others it has to be said!). The idea was to raise the profile of the scheme and to inform everyone in the village who the LIVES volunteers are. It appears to have been a great success generating quite a lot of interest both in enquiries to become First Responders and in generous donations. To everyone who made an enquiry or a donation - thank you.

Nettleham Carnival The theme for the Carnival was Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales and it seemed very appropriate for our group to take part in the procession using the ‘Queen Of Hearts’ nursery rhyme as our theme.

Dominique volunteered to be the Queen of Hearts and young Liam Blow assisted her as the Knave of Hearts, both looking splendid wearing their costumes. (Editor: see pages 30/31 for more news about the Carnival).

SAVE LIVES The rest of the First Responders, all carrying a bucket and wearing their fluorescent tabards followed on behind a LIVES fast response vehicle, kindly brought along to the Carnival for the day by ambulance paramedic Dave MacFarlane.

It seemed a long walk on what must have been one of the hottest days of the summer, but was well worth it in the end, as we managed to collect £83 along the route. The ‘Queen Of Hearts’ and her ‘Knave’ handed out jam tarts to anyone who gave a donation, but due to your generosity the jam tarts ran out long before we reached the village green!

On the Green, our stall ‘The Teddy Bear Tombola’ was a great success with the children and was run by our fundraisers, Mandy, Mavis, Alan, and Marie (they managed to find new homes for all our teddy bears!).

Parish Council News Quality Council Scheme:

Parish and Town Councils throughout England are being given a major boost with the launch of government guidance to accompany the QUALITY Parish and Town Council Scheme. For the first time, the QUALITY Parish and Town Council Scheme will give a major opportunity for local communities to have more ownership of local community functions and services.

Parish and Town Councils are recognised as the local government tier closest to the people.

There have been a number of mindless acts of vandalism in the village over the past few months, including damage to a house, seats, trees and the bank of the Beck.

QUALITY Parish and Town Councils will meet robust tests to demonstrate not only a benchmark levels of competence, but will also be able to assure key partners, such as principal authorities and other community and voluntary sector organisations, that they are representative, well managed and able and ready to take on an enhanced role.

Web Site:

QUALITY Parish and Town Councils can also enter into negotiations with principal authorities over enhanced joint working and devolution of functions and services, to ensure the best deal at grassroots level.

Some services that could be devolved include: noise and nuisance abatement, development control, certain aspects of management of libraries and museums, leisure and tourism, street lighting, litter collection and litter control measures, parking restrictions and street lighting. By working closely with voluntary groups, QUALITY councils will build strong local partnerships to improve the quality of life for local people. Parish councils have been invited to agree Charters with their principal authorities to enhance joint working.

Your Parish Council is currently studying the implications of the scheme and what necessary changes will be required to obtain QUALITY status.

Roads: The police are now sufficiently concerned about speeding on the roads in the village that they will be installing a speed camera, probably on Sudbrooke Lane, to try to deter dangerous speeding.

If anyone has any information on the persons causing this damage to our village, please inform the local police office. Many people work hard to make this a lovely place to live and it’s a shame that a few mindless vandals should spoil it, simply because they have nothing better to do.

It is planned that the web site will have an index to the Parish Council Meeting Minutes. In addition, it is planned that an Ordinance Survey Map of the Conservation Area of the village will be included on the web site (subject to agreement by OS, as this is their copyright).

Village Map: The map of the village located outside the Co-op is now out of date. It has therefore been decided to update the map and show various local sites of interest using colour photographs.

Refuse Tipping: Non-Nettleham residents have been observed using the refuse collection facility on Greetwell Lane. This behaviour is causing particular concern, as the vehicle sometimes has to leave early because it is full, thus depriving residents of its use.

The provision by WLDC of green wheelie bins for garden rubbish might help to some extent in reducing the demand, but various methods of controlling the use of the facility are under consideration. Reciprocal tipping is an interesting option which could be considered.

LINK ROMANIA FAMILY SHOEBOX APPEAL 2003 Once again it’s time to ask you to support the Shoebox Appeal for Romanian families please. We hope to launch the appeal at a Coffee Morning at Church View on Saturday, 13 September from 10.00am 12.00pm. Again we are able to hold the event there by kind permission of Doreen, the Scheme Manager. We hope to have a supply of shoeboxes for you and, of course, there will be the usual stalls, raffle, etc.

The entrance “fee” will be by a bar of chocolate or bag of sweets please.

Donations will be appreciated but you’re more than welcome to a free cup of tea or coffee and biscuits.

Custom regulations in Romania mean that again this year we cannot include any coffee, tea, dried or tinned foods in our boxes. This is so frustrating when Margaret and John, who you will remember spoke to us in January, tell us that the crops sown in the Spring have failed due to lack of rain and although more have now been planted and are doing well, there will be a shortage of food this winter and people will go hungry. The only way we can alleviate this is either by sponsoring a family, who would then receive a food parcel every month, (at a cost of £20.00 per month) or being very generous with our donations.

Certainly we will spread a little happiness as we know there are families in Romania who are just waiting for our boxes to arrive.

Biscuits and sweets are allowed - that is how we decided on our entrance “fee” colouring books, pens, pencils, balloons, etc, can all be sent and by the time we have added presents for mums and dads there are plenty of gifts to choose to fill our boxes.

We have also booked a stall at Nettleham Cares (see page 13) so if you are unable to join us at our Coffee Morning, we look forward to seeing you at the Village Hall on 18 October.

Parish Council Annual Financial Report for the year ended 31 March 2003 Recent legislation requires local councils to make public (other than by reference at public meetings) their accounting reports at the end of each fiscal year and at the same time introduce a greater degree of openness relating to the management of affairs within their jurisdiction.

Alongside this, Central Government is introducing a scheme for local councils to achieve the status of “Quality Council” which will give councils a greater autonomy over an increased range of matters that it does not currently have.

Whereas the minimum requirement of publication is to display the returns on a notice board, your council has decided that Nettleham News is the best media in which to report its financial activity in the last fiscal year, in keeping with greater openness.

Part-way through the year, the council took over the physical, managerial and financial control of Mulsanne Park and the accounts include full annual income/expenditure of this village facility. It was previously managed by the Sports and Community Association for the council, but in the next two or three years a considerable amount of cash injection is needed for building and infrastructure maintenance and upgrading, including the provision of disabled persons facilities, and the council felt that it would be in the best interest of all concerned to take over the management.

No councillor received any remuneration or out-of-pocket expenses in respect of time or cost in the performance of their duties.

The council has no full-time employees, but does use the services of seven persons to assist in the administration and general upkeep of the village and its facilities. The cost in the year under review was £15,737 which increased over the previous year by £3,171 due mainly to the inclusion of Mulsanne Park.

There are three reports:

(1) Statement of Income and Expenditure for the year (2) Balance Sheet as at 31 March 2003 (3) Annual Return (as required by statute for external audit purposes).

Certain items shown in the reports require some explanation:

Statement of Income and Expenditure Income The parish rate yielded £50,161 for the year with additional support from West Lindsey DC to the sum of £5,986 to provide the precept of £56,147.

The developer of the Paddocks (Larch Avenue) passed £23,115 to the council to provide for the future maintenance, repair and replacement of the play area and equipment.

Expenditure There were no significant changes in expenditure, apart from a number of urgent repairs to the fabric and electrical facilities at Mulsanne Park, which are included in the total sum of £16,044.

Balance Sheet Earmarked Reserves The council is custodian to a total sum of £31,827 in respect of funds passed to it by the developers of the Poacher’s Meadow and the Paddocks estates, for the future of the play areas in those developments and this is included in the earmarked reserves shown.

A condition of the grant received from English Heritage for the refurbishment of the Old School, was that the council should allocate funds annually to a reserve for the purpose of the maintenance of the fabric of the building and its immediate surrounds. The council has met this stipulation and has accumulated some £18,569 which are part of earmarked reserves.

Likewise, the council has created a reserve in respect of Mulsanne Park for major works as outlined above to the sum of £16,687, which again is part of earmarked reserves.

General Reserves These are reserves put aside by the council for a number of known future expenses, such as emergency removal of trees as a result of gales, election costs in the future, possible payment of rates on our office facility, recreation areas, etc, and though individually of no major significance do amount to £11,664.

Annual Return The report printed is the financial part of a larger report in which the council has to make a number of statements as to its conduct and accountability in its day to day business and also includes a report from a local intermediate auditor.

For a short period a few years ago, Road Car experimentally operated a service to and from Welton, Dunholme, Scothern, Nettleham, passing via Lodge Lane Health Centre onto the Wragby Road into Lincoln. Road Car have described it as “a quick fix, which was never going to be a long term solution.” What a public service and success such a slightly revised route might be to these villages!

After calling at the four villages and leaving Nettleham via Lodge Lane, it would continue towards Lincoln on the Wragby Road until reaching Outer Circle Road, then turn left (passing the increasing number of shops and businesses there); then along Greetwell Road, at the end of which it would rejoin the Wragby Road into Lincoln. Many from the villages would welcome such a direct service, which would include the Lincoln County Hospital on its route.

It seems a pity that all three companies serving Nettleham at present follow similar routes into the city. This leaves the areas suggested above unserved, unless one goes into Lincoln and out again, with all the hassle (especially for the elderly) and time-wasting business of changing buses.

YOUR VILLAGE HALL Here is your chance to have your say on village life in Nettleham and what, in your opinion, may be missing from it and what would make it an even better place in which to live.

The Village Hall Committee are interested to hear you views and would like some ideas and suggestions on how some additional events could be introduced into the village calendar for everyone to participate in and enjoy.

Nettleham is to apply for a grant from the National Lottery Fund to obtain funding for improvements to the village hall.

The committee has already started the ball rolling by approaching the Community Grants agency. Now we need your help.

I am Rod Stainton, the secretary of the Village Hall Committee. I have only been in Nettleham for a year, but I was brought up in village life and I am a true yellow-belly through and through. So no excuses that you are new to the village!

The hall was created for everyone whether you’re young or old, new to the village or have lived here for years, and although there are other venues in the village - let’s get in the community spirit and use the hall as the central meeting place to get together. Please remember that it is for ALL the village to use evenings, weekends, etc.

If you have any gripes - let me know - you will find my details at the foot of the page.

On behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank you all for your support for the Carnival in July - it was a great turnout on a lovely day, showing clearly that even in a village as large as Nettleham, we can come together as a community and enjoy each other’s company. But don’t let it stop there, when you go to the shops today, remember to say “Good Morning” or whatever other cheery greeting you use.

Or a children’s Easter Parade where kids could decorate their bikes and come (in fancy dress?) to the Village Hall for judging, maybe followed by a bonanza spring table-top sale.

José King, Theatre Director of The Robin Hood Theatre

THEATRE NIGHTS FROM NETTLEHAM We returned to Nettleham last evening from another enjoyable visit to the Robin Hood Theatre, Averham, near Newark. We saw the comedy thriller ‘Natural Causes’, another superbly produced play by their patron Eric Chappell, who wrote the hit television sitcom ‘Rising Damp’.

José King, the Theatre Director and Licensee has kindly supplied details which follow.

DOWN MEMORY LANE In 1913, a Revd Joseph Cyril Walker built the theatre in its rural setting with help from a village carpenter. Originally a wooden building with high stage, ornate gold proscenium arch with RHOS crest, dark green velvet curtains, orchestra pit, trap door, fly door and cat walk, it had its own electrical power plant. Much of this remains today. The vicar would put on musicals, pantomimes and he painted

elaborate sets. When he died in 1946, the theatre fell into disrepair. Considered a fire hazard it was threatened with demolition.

Later José King and her husband became aware of Valerie Baker’s search for a summer theatre. After contacting Bishop Mark Way of Averham at that time who called a meeting, Valerie Baker offered to renovate the theatre and put £300 towards the cost. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners rented the theatre to her for £1 per annum.

The Robin Hood re-opened in 1961 with a Shakespearean recital by Donald Wolfit and his wife Rosalind Iden. Years previously, as a grammar school boy, Donald Wolfit had travelled from Newark to Averham in a wagonette in order to make his first stage appearance as a donkey!

From 1961, serious renovation work began with new seats on a tiered back half of the auditorium, which seats 150. Donald Wolfit fell in love with the theatre and negotiated

with Church Commissioners to form a charitable Trust with himself, Valerie Baker and Bishop Kenneth Thompson of Sherwood as the first three Trustees.

In 1979, Nottinghamshire County Council became the Trustees and The Charity Commission ruled there must be a Management Committee - three members to be elected by the NCC, two by the Bishop of Southwell and four voluntary helpers. There was also a Production Committee to deal with plays and a Social Committee to raise funds for events. So the Robin Hood Theatre Company was formed.

José King continues: “The auditorium now has acoustic panelling which makes the sound excellent.

A new room was built used for rehearsals and suppers. There is a popular Ladies Luncheon Club which meets every month.

Recently, National Lottery money was obtained to start building a new studio, dressing rooms, a disabled dressing room and toilet, a workshop and bigger wardrobe area. This is still under construction and more money is needed before all the inside facilities can be added.”

José King writes: “Nottingham Playhouse opened in 1961, the same year as we started the Robin Hood up again. John Neville was a good friend of the theatre and brought some one night shows with his company, which at that time included Judi Dench and Ian McKellan.”

In 1977 José King took over as Theatre Director and approached Judi Dench: “To bring her one night show ‘An Evening with Queen Victoria’ which she did in spite of spraining her ankle just prior to that date while rehearsing for ‘Cabaret’.

THE ROBIN HOOD THEATRE TODAY The Robin Hood Theatre Company has grown to produce six plays a year. In addition there are hirings from other local companies for a week and one night shows.

There is now a flourishing Youth Theatre group, who produce a variety show and a pantomime each year and enter both the NANDA Junior Drama and the Wolfit Drama Festivals.

Just 23 miles from Nettleham, along the new dual carriageway A46 to Newark and then the A617 to Averham, the Robin Hood Theatre is located at the end of Church Lane. The Nettleham Gardeners’Association

ANNUAL SHOW 2003

Yes, with the season of autumn comes the Nettleham Gardeners’ Association Annual Show in the Village Hall on Saturday 6 September at 2.30pm.

Admission to this Aladdin’s cave of horticultural delights is only 50p for adults and children free.

There are several classes in the show for which you do not need to be a member of the Association, so why not have a go this year and enter a selection of your best produce - it’s fun and you may walk off with a cash prize or even a trophy!

Very Best Wishes to Sylvia It’s the end of an era at Nettleham Library as, after 25 years of serving the reading public of Nettleham, Senior Library Assistant, Sylvia Ball, retired at the end of August.

Sylvia has seen many changes in the library during her long career and her knowledge of ‘library ways’, and most importantly books, will be greatly missed by staff and borrowers alike.

We will also miss her great kindness, wonderful sense of humour and welcoming smile.

The staff would like to say “Thank You” to Sylvia, we wish you a long and happy retirement and look forward to seeing you on ‘the other side’ of the counter.

A new Out of School Club for Nettleham has made another step nearer to opening, following confirmation of our successful bid to the New Opportunities Fund. This now enables us to purchase toys and equipment and support the club during the first two years of operation. The club will operate from Nettleham Infant School (Early Years Unit), and we are awaiting our registration inspection by ‘Ofsted’. We aim to open after October Half Term on 3 November 2003.

The Club will initially offer Before and After School Care for children who attend Nettleham Infants or Juniors (aged 4 –11).

In the future, we aim to offer similar care to Children who attend Beckside Nursery (within the same premises) who are aged 3 or over (subject to demand). In the holidays, we will open for full days or half days, for children aged 3 – 11 years.

The Club will offer the following (inclusive of breakfast/evening Snack): Breakfast Club: 8.00am – 9.00am £2.50 per session After School Club: 3.15pm – 6.00pm £5.00 per session Holiday Club: Full Day 8.00am – 6.00pm £16.00 per day Half Day 8.00am – 1.00pm £8.00 per session Half Day 1.00pm – 6.00pm £8.00 per session * There will be a 10% reduction for a second child.

Once again, the members of the Carnival Team drew a deep sigh of relief when Saturday 12 July dawned bright and clear without a cloud in the sky. We have been so lucky with the weather the last few years and sooner or later...

Nettleham News telling me why) and it would be a great shame if this event - the only annual village event which involves the entire community - should fade away simply through lack of commitment by a small number of residents.

Anyway, it turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year so far - a real scorcher! And it seems everyone in the village made their way to the Green for this ever-popular event in the village calendar.

The crowds of folks, young and old, were all determined to have a good time and the event was, as usual, an enormous success, with a total of £2,250 being raised.

As with any other group, many hands make light work, and the more volunteers who are available to help - the less is the burden on each individual. The number required to ensure that this event continues next year and in the future is relatively small, and there must be a few people out there who would be prepared to give a few hours each year to their community. It’s not much to ask and, after a spell in the group, perhaps the next generation will come forward to replace them. And so it should go on from year to year. But of course it doesn’t, and it is the same people (and you will often find their names associated with several other groups who endeavour to help the village in various ways) who have to struggle on year after year.

But there is a problem and it simply won’t go away without you!

Several members of the existing Carnival Team, having participated in this group for a number of years now, understandably feel that it is about time someone else had a go and brought some fresh enthusiasm, ideas and energy to this event.

To their great credit, they will continue to help on the day as before, but in terms of the necessary planning and organisation, which goes on behind the scenes prior to the big day, they’ve simply had enough!

Three Peaks Conquered!

Readers may remember that on this page of the last edition of Nettleham News, Ian Benford told us about the group of local walkers who were going to attempt the 3 Peaks Challenge for charity. Here he tells us how they fared.

One wintry evening in the Black Horse, myself and a couple of friends decided it would be a good idea to have a go at the 3 Peaks Challenge; namely to reach the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon all within 24 hours.

Over a couple of pints it seemed like a great idea but when the day came, Friday the 13th June, the reality was not quite so cosy. Nine of us set off, eight to walk the mountains and one to do all the driving.

Midge bites and nausea were not our only worries as one of the team had a painful ankle, whilst another’s boot was literally falling apart (none of us had thought to take spare boots, not that there was any room for them!). We were reduced to 6 walkers!

Lincoln Lions generously provided a minibus that seats 12, so plenty of room to spread out, or so we thought. We left Nettleham at 7.20am with the minibus loaded to the rafters with cool boxes, rucksacks, holdalls, walking boots, etc, plus a change of clothes for a night out in Betws y Coed once the walk was completed.

The journey to Scafell Pike in the Lake District gave us a chance to sleep and rest our legs. We arrived at 2.30am and set off feeling surprisingly awake and energetic. Sunrise greeted us with a beautiful, peaceful landscape of mountains, trees and birdsong.

The drive from Nettleham to Fort William went smoothly and 4.00pm found us at the foot of Ben Nevis, changing into our walking gear and feeling full of hope, on what was a lovely summer’s evening (with not a midge in sight!).

At 5.00pm we set off up the mountain at a steady pace, enjoying the beautiful scenery and balmy weather. As we approached the summit, low-lying cloud moved in, but the path was easy to follow and to our surprise we returned to the car park in a time of just under 5 hours.

However we had no time to dwell on this as the car park was heaving with midges and we were

However, being ahead of time made us less than focused on our route and what should have been a 4 hour walk turned into 6 hours, as we took 3 wrong turnings (one of which led up a near-vertical slope covered in loose stones and boulders!). We eventually returned, weary, legs aching and behind time.

Fortunately we were now on our final leg, that being the drive down into Wales, a walk to the summit of Snowdon and then back down to the minibus before the 24 hours was up.

Unfortunately, being such a sunny day, everyone in the north west appeared to be heading the same way as us and we eventually

arrived at the foot of Snowdon with 20 hours 30 minutes on the clock.

This was the worst part of the challenge, as we were so tired, our legs ached and it was very hot.

Could we get to the summit and back in less than 31/2 hours? The only realistic option was to follow the Pyg track, which although just about the shortest route, is also one of the steepest.

It was a steady plod up Snowdon, trying not to stop not even for a breather or to admire the view. On reaching the summit, we found that we had just over an hour remaining, there was nothing for it but to run down! The thought of raising money for STRUT and the hospice spurred us on and, to our surprise, we all made it down before the 24 hours was up. How did we feel? Elated, yet exhausted, hungry, nauseous and barely able to walk any further because our knees and ankles were so painful.

Would I do it again? No way! However David Subden and Rick Ellis are planning to do the 4 Peak challenge, which involves not only Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, but also Northern Ireland’s highest peak!! If any one is interested give David or Rick a call.

The Nettleham Pot-Holers Although the precise origin of pot-holing is lost in the mists of time, it probably flourished during the Roman period.

The making of pots, without holes, except for the one at the top of course, goes back even further. The local clay around this area is ideal for the job and indubit... induby... indubitab... indubitibab... doubtless the trade was carried on here from the very earliest of times.

For generations, as now, making pots was not only commercial, but also regarded as a therapeutic hobby and when the excitement of conquering new lands, taking slaves and road building flagged, what better than a stab at the potter’s wheel? After all where there’s a wheel there’s a way! Not everyone approved of this sort of thing, though, and there was a strong opinion held by many that this was letting the side down - thus the derogatory expression of ‘going to pot’.

‘Ageing’ pots, to give the impression of antiquity and rarity, obviously improves the chances of getting a good price from tourists and this practise, started in the earliest times, continues to this day.

However, it has always been frowned upon by ‘the authorities’, and even now, there are regular reports of prosecutions for ‘pot smoking’!

Incidentally, a ‘smoking pot’ can often be the sign of a good stew on the way and a whole pot can be considered better than a pot hole.

The great technological breakthrough perhaps came about when an old household pot was used to hold a plant, for its odour, or for its colour, to brighten up the hut, one way or another. Of course, initially the pigs, which shared the hut, would probably have been inclined to eat the plants, unless they were placed on a shelf out of the way.

Obviously, it was easier for the plants to be on the shelf than for the pigs to be there!

There then arises the question of watering: that is both bringing and ‘taking away’. As far as the pigs were concerned, that would be as far as possible for the ‘taking away’.

Not so for the plants. Come to think of it, the pigs have very little to do with the pots, so we will henceforward leave them out of our reckoning. Some of you pig fanciers may be outraged by this, but ‘you can’t make an omelette without cracking eggs’.

Then of course, at the time of which we are writing, the hens would certainly have been near, if not inside, the hut and pots would have been necessary for watering, feeding, and holding the eggs, which is getting us back someway towards the heart of the matter.

Now a pot without a hole, is useful if you want it to hold a liquid, or even a snake (if you were a snake charmer). Certainly, in India, snake pots are without holes, again except the one at the top. A trained snake would be very poor indeed if it didn’t have a pot to hiss in!

However if you don’t want to over-water your plants, it is best to have an extra hole, preferably at the bottom. No doubt a great deal of experimentation was carried out to establish that fact, and a lot of water went under the bridge, and out the side of the pots before the breakthrough. The making and placing of the pot hole was critical!

Thus began the craft of ‘The Pot Holer’. In the early days, this would have been done manually. No, not once a year, but by hand! or, more realistically speaking, by finger.

Thus the traditional craft began, and expanded when it was realised it was easier to channel clean water from its source to where it was wanted by using a pot with an equal sized hole each end. This was the breakthrough for the potholer - it was ‘The Pipe’!

So, we have established the origin of the term ‘Pot holer’. Latterly this term has been applied to those who, not content with a pot hole big enough for a finger, or even a fist, look for holes big enough to take the whole body! No longer a manufacturing exercise but a leisure activity.

It is from these roots that the current ‘Nettleham Pot Holers’ came into being.

Meetings, to discuss outings or explorations recently undertaken, take place at a secret, underground location locally. Initially, meetings were held under a table in a small corner of the cellar of a local pub, but an ‘ullage’ problem developed, which led to an acrimonious displacement. A quantity of beer was displaced and so were the pot holers!

It is traditional that the meetings are lit by candle power, and often a small foray will be made round the village drains, and on 39

special occasions the secretly mined hole linking the concealed entries to the cellars of the Black Horse, the Plough, and the White Hart, will be tapped. In fact some tapping, for refreshment purposes, will happen en route! For special occasions, the connection to the shaft, of presumed Roman origins, which passes under the old quarry, will be used to reach the cellar of the Brown Cow! On other occasions a return trip will be made via the Dixon and Hogg ‘sump’ to the cave, which is known as the Great Pickwell’s ‘Level’.

Training begins, for new members, under the stage in the Village Hall, and as anyone who is familiar with that will know, it is not a place for claustrophobia.

Incidentally, it is little known that he, ‘Claustrophobia’, was the roman God of breathing.

This training comes in particularly useful on trips to make further investigation of the extensive ‘Wainfleet Levels’. It can be very damp down there, and, of course, (is that the proper way to spell course?) it is customary, to take the traditional safety measure of carrying a pig’s bladder full of air, in case there should be an exceptional tide.

The long term project for the club remains that of clearing a way through the now largely collapsed tunnel which leads from the Old Bishop’s Palace to the Cathedral in Lincoln. This suffered a setback when the new fire station was built on the Nettleham Road, on the outskirts of Lincoln. A great quantity of concrete from the footings leaked into the tunnel and has necessitated a considerable length of ‘relief’ tunnel to be excavated. For reasons of secrecy this had to be bagged and spread about discreetly, particularly where building work is going on in Nettleham. This, it may have been noticed, is the reason why skips hired for minor jobs, fill so quickly - often overnight!

If anyone would like to join the club they might like to signal their sincere interest by undertaking an excavation outside their own home, which will inevitably lead to a member, or someone in authority, to drop in on them.

Memories of Old Nettleham The publication of the photograph of the Water Tower on the front cover of the summer 2003 edition of Nettleham News prompted a telephone call from John Pepper, who lived in the village for around fifty years. I went to see him at his home in Binbrook and he provided me with old photographs, books and recollections of the village many years ago.

His family history is closely linked to the neighbouring parish of Riseholme, home of the Burton Hunt, and in view of the current legislation going through Parliament to ban hunting with dogs, I considered this to be a timely opportunity to recall some of the history of this rural activity as well, before it disappears forever into the mists of time (as it seems very likely to do).

It has resulted in a very long article, perhaps the longest that has ever appeared within the pages of the magazine, but I trust you will find this glimpse into the history of this traditional rural ‘sport’ and some of its more colourful characters as interesting and fascinating as I did.

It was a sunny day in June when I received a warm and friendly welcome from John at his home in Binbrook and he proceeded to relate many different anecdotes about the life and times of his family, in and around the village during the 20th century.

But before we hear about John’s recollections, we must go back further in history, as the reason for his coming to this area at a very early age, from his birthplace at Goxhill, was due to factors which themselves are worthy of mention as part of the history of both this village and our neighbouring parish of Riseholme.

John’s story is associated with the Burton Hunt and on the front cover of the excellent book “A History of the Burton Hunt” by R B Fountain, I was to find the image of a hunt button (but more of this on page 64).

Hunting is a peculiarly native ‘sport’ that for several centuries provided the social focus of rural life and the principle amusement of the privileged landed gentry. The ladies attended concerts, card parties, balls and assemblies, whilst the gentlemen indulged in cockfighting, racing, gambling, prize fighting and, most

In her excellent book ‘A Sign of the Times’ Barbara Taylor tells us that Captain Thomas Wilson employed the services of a water diviner in 1905, to ascertain whether it was possible to tap water from springs on his land. The diviner found two underground streams crossing each other, the second several feet below the first, the windmill and water tower being built to exploit this natural water source. The tower is believed to have been constructed and maintained by a Mr Hablett, who also repaired windmills, pumps, etc.

In order to work efficiently, the windmill was constructed over 100ft high, because of the many tall trees surrounding the site and the tower needed to be six feet above the highest point of the houses, for the gravity feed to operate successfully.

To the left of the picture is a six-sided pigeon- (or dove-) cote built by Mrs Wilson about 1910 and subsequently demolished in the 1950’s. There were also a number of farm cottages nearby (now gone) named ‘Dovecote Cottages’.

important of all, hunting. The private packs of the more aristocratic families hunted the stag, the less prosperous anything that moved - foxes, hares, badgers, otters, etc.

The style of hunting developed in different ways in many different parts of the country over the centuries. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, Lincolnshire was universally considered to be a wild, uncivilised area of Fenland (not much change there then!). The countryside was unenclosed, with plenty of open grassland, some large areas of woodland and virtually no hedges.

For fifty miles to the north and south of Lincoln the cliff was still heathland, with extensive rabbit warrens to the north-east. In the Trent valley the land was very fertile, but prone to flooding, rendering it too heavy to plough. The Brayford Pool was much larger and inhabited by large numbers of fish and waterfowl. The pastures were poorly drained by the ancient ridge and furrow system and around the villages was often found neglected common land on which a few cows, sheep and geese grazed.

Roads were in a terrible condition, constantly being cut up by the passage of numerous herds of heavy cattle being driven to market.

The countryside was more populated than it is today, providing a constant source of work throughout the year. The harvest would start earlier and finish later and ploughing would continue whenever the weather allowed. There were numerous haystacks and the stubble in the fields was much longer and remained for many months. The poorest land may have been left fallow for two years out of three. Labourers shared their hovels with a cow or some geese.

They ate meat perhaps once a week, poached and got drunk when they could.

Since the hunt season covered the autumn and winter months, for recreation during the summer the Lincoln Club would meet at the Green Man at Blankney - a small inn on the edge of the wild and inhospitable heath, which even at that time required the Dunston Light to guide travellers to safety. The members of the hunt fraternity met once a month and seldom parted sober!

Until 1809, the ‘sport’ was the divertisement for an indigenous Lincolnshire family - the Monsons, who were ennobled in 1728. The first records however, date back to 1672, making the Burton Hunt one of the oldest in the country to confine its quarry to the fox. This 18th century hunting would start very early in the day, leisurely following the slow-moving hounds, which were capable of resolutely following a cold line for many hours. The followers’ delight was in the art of venery1, rather than the ride.

Towards the end of the 18th century, Hugo Meynell of the Quorn Hunt, started breeding hounds to produce a faster pack of uniform size and lighter build and with these hunted more systematically than before. The hunt followers began to gallop and jump fences to keep up with the hounds and this more energetic approach was soon widely adopted - Lincolnshire, with its extensive pastureland, being particularly suitable for this popular new style of hunting.

The Monsons were no exception, and successive generations of the family transformed the hunt from a primitive group of hunting dogs to a disciplined pack of foxhounds, which had influence far beyond this corner of Lincolnshire.

Indeed it may be said that they rate as one of the foundation packs of the modern foxhound.

Over the years, this new style of hunting was brought to perfection by a series of Burton Masters, whose reputation for fearless riding, the excellence of their hounds and the sportsmanship they showed, made them famous, including Squire Osbaldeston, Sir Richard Sutton, Lord Henry Bentinck, Henry Chaplin, Francis Foljambe and Thomas Wilson. During this period, a number of fascinating and sometimes amusing stories emerge.

During the Easter Week of 1828, Frances Foljambe, who would often ride a hundred miles or more and be out again the following day, was Master when the hounds ‘found’ in Fiskerton Long Wood. The fox was pursued to Lincoln where, in Minster Yard, he was headed by the choristers emerging from the cathedral in their surplices. He turned down the Grecian (Greestone) Stairs and was finally killed under the arches of the Stonebow!

During the Mastership of Lord Henry Bentinck in the mid 19th century, the kennels at Burton Hall were closed and luxurious new ones built at Monks Lane, Reepham.

Some of the passion with which the hunt was held, and the lavish spending which supported it, may be gained from Henry Chaplin (Master

1865-71) who resided at Nettleham Hall.

Although in later life he weighed eighteen stone and was shortsighted, he remained a fearless rider across country. Virtually nothing would keep him from the meet and if he was obliged to work late in the House of Commons, he would engage a special train from King’s Cross to take him to the required location in Lincolnshire, eventually drawing up in some remote cutting, where he would emerge in his red coat and riding boots to meet his waiting groom and horse for an immediate gallop away!

He always approached the hunt with the same single-minded enthusiasm and energy, resulting in him getting through several horses in a single day, but he had great affection for his mounts, often spending hours at a time at his stables in Monks Road, Lincoln, feeding them carrots and sugar and talking to them individually.

He purchased Riseholme Hall and estate on 6th April 1903 and had new kennels built on Riseholme Lane, which are still in use today. He continued to keep his mounts at a yard in Nettleham with 40 boxes, the horses being bedded on peat moss. (Mr Randolph Wemyss, a previous Master from 1881-2, had bought this yard from a dealer and added a covered ride).

Intensely interested and devoted to all aspects of hunting, he was an excellent horseman and breeder of hounds, exporting these to many different countries abroad. A man by the name of Cridge was the hound feeder and gave them Scottish oatmeal (which had to be at least two years old) which was cooked in one of two vast coppers, the other being used for cooking flesh.

In Riseholme parish there is an ancient Barrow or burial mound and whenever the hunt came past in full cry, workers in the vicinity would stop and climb to the top to watch the hounds in full cry and “ev-a-rest”2, so the Barrow thus became locally known as “Mount Everest”.

At the close of the 19th century, the character of the ‘sport’ changed again. Due to a number of developments in agriculture, pastures were increasingly ploughed up to grow crops and it was now farmers, rather than the rural gentry who followed the hunt. For the first time a Committee was formed, subscriptions levied and Masters appointed from widely differing trades and professions.

One of these was Captain Thomas Wilson, born at Dore in Derbyshire, who was hunt Master from 1885 to 1912. The source of his wealth was the Westbrook Snuff Mill in Sheffield.

Once, when the pack contracted distemper, he gave them garlic pills and changed their diet to port wine and eggs!

On one notable occasion, Cridge was despatched to Belvoir castle to collect some hounds, but because (for some reason) he had some sulphur in his pocket, all his coins turned black and he was unable to purchase a drink on the way. On his arrival, he was presented with a mutton bone

and piece of gristle to sustain him, so when he departed, presumably very ill-tempered by this time, he left a note with the untouched food which read “Save this till next time!”.

Tom ‘Bunger’ Ward was Wilson’s 18-stone earth-stopper and terrier-man, with a nose for beer which rivalled that for foxes! Riding his huge horse, he carried a bag full of terriers and, distributed about his person, shovels, picks and all the other paraphernalia required for ejecting foxes from drains and other miscellaneous hiding places. (At the beginning of the season, foxes were smoked out and all the main earths stopped up, until the vixens needed them again for breeding, the following spring).

Thomas Wilson went on to become a JP and a colonel in the Lincolnshire Yeomanry, but this did not stop him from hunting and although he was a skilled horseman, he would frequently take up to 25 serious falls in a season. An idea of his tenacity may be gained from the occasion when his horse refused to swim the River Ancholme. Unperturbed, Wilson plunged into the water alone and continued the hunt on a grey plough-horse which a helpful farmer unstabled for him. He got his fox!

When he eventually resigned the Mastership, there was a sale of surplus equipment in May 1912 at Nettleham, when an old stage coach in excellent condition, which originally cost £250, was knocked down to Mr C Swan for £7!

During these early years of the 20th century, Grange de Lings, Riseholme and Nettleham all joined in various social activities including entertainments, garden parties, pageants, fetes, pantomimes and balls. An annual shooting competition was also held at the shooting range in the old Institute building on the Green and for this Mrs Wilson gave a solid silver challenge cup. The Nettleham Habitation of the Primrose League also provided a silver shield, both trophies to be held for a year by the winning team. (I wonder where these are now!).

For several years, Mrs Wilson also provided a Christmas tree decked with gifts for the children of the Nettleham Church Sunday School, together with a quarter of a ton of coal for those on Parish Relief.

During the war years, it was difficult for the hunt to obtain both food and financial support and amongst the farmers mentioned for their generosity was ‘Mr Percy Pepper of Nettleham Fields, a true huntsman’s friend both in the field and in the kennels’.

On 20th May 1921, Thomas Wilson transferred the entire estate to his only son, Major Charles Wilson. ‘Colonel Tom’ later died and was buried at Riseholme on 14th October 1940.

John recalls a teacher at the village school by the name of Miss Moss, a formidable lady who would ride round the village on her bicycle. She was a very stout person and the tyres on her bicycle were unable to support this considerable weight, with the result that she progressed rather noisily on the metal rims of the wheels.

Percy first joined the Yeomanry in 1901 and eventually achieved the rank of RSM. He was to meet the sons of many well-to-do Lincolnshire families during his service career, and amongst these was Thomas Wilson who, at the end of the 1914-18 war, asked Percy to come and develop the farm at Nettleham Fields. So it was that at the age of about one year John (frequently known as ‘Jock’) came with his father to live at Nettleham Field Farm.

John spent his boyhood in and around Nettleham and Riseholme and informs me that there are many stories of those early times which he could tell (and some that he couldn’t!). In those days the children would walk to school in Nettleham from outlying hamlets and farms, often without any shoes. His father, in addition to the farm, also ran a retail milk business and many a time his delivery cart would be laden with children of all ages cadging a lift home from school!

It was with this lady that one of the Kerrison boys (perhaps not unintentionally John is unable to remember which one!) had an altercation and sought later revenge. (I am still quite unable to visualise the sanitary arrangements which would make the following possible, but according to John, in those days anything and everything was tipped into the Beck for convenient disposal!).

Anyway, John assures me that a bunch of stinging nettles were collected and, when Miss Moss was relieving herself one day, these were inserted and pushed upwards until they made contact with bare flesh. Not surprisingly, Miss Moss jumped up screaming and, looking over the wall, recognized the culprit legging it down the side of the Beck!

He was duly brought before the headmaster, Mr Lewis, to receive the prescribed punishment - caning in front of the entire assembled school.

But each time the cane swished down, the small hand was swiftly withdrawn until, in desperation, Mr Lewis ordered him to bend down, and, with the lad’s head firmly wedged between his knees, he proceeded to administer the punishment to an alternative part of his anatomy!

He also remembers the two parrots which Grandma Larder (who kept the grocery shop on the Green) used to have. The older boys would teach them to whistle and say “Does your mother want to buy a rabbit?” which the birds repeated incessantly until it well nigh drove her mad! It was Snowy Jubb, who was training to be a baker there at the time, whose job it was to chase these boys away before they taught the parrots something worse!

Charles Wilson, the son of ‘Colonel Tom’, had meanwhile become Master of the Burton Hunt from 1935 to 1939 (more of which later), but in

the intervening years there were a number of Masters including Sir Julien Cahn who, as the proprietor of a large furniture empire, was perhaps the last of the ‘big spenders’ and hunted with great panache and style. He and his party would first arrive in a fleet of chauffeur-driven Rolls Royces. Stopping for lunch, sometimes even when the hounds were running, his staff would produce chairs, tables, white linen tablecloths, silver cutlery and all the other items necessary to enjoy a civilized meal (orange soufflé was his favourite dish) whilst the field stood around at a respectful distance. He also made hunting considerably easier for himself by employing a groom carrying a large axe to ride ahead and give him ample warning of difficult obstacles ahead or, if necessary, to completely demolish them before his arrival!

illustrious predecessors. Nothing would keep him from his hounds, which was illustrated when a fox, pursued by the pack, crossed the flooded river at Greetwell and Wilson and his mount plunged in after them. In the struggle to get out on the far side, his horse trod on his hand, forcing his ring into the flesh of his finger.

He was taken to Lincoln where the ring was removed and on his return he found to his great dismay that the fox had been killed in his absence. It was on the same occasion that George Ives, the whipper-in, who had also followed Wilson into the river but, being unable to swim, had almost drowned before being pulled out.

No hunting day was long enough for Charles and he frequently finished hunting in the dark!

He was the first Master of the Burton Hunt to transport his hounds and horses by road, and was also the first farmer in Lincolnshire to make use of a combine harvester.

He was also President of the Lincolnshire Cricket Club and keenly interested in the Scout movement, training the Nettleham Troupe as their Scoutmaster and often organising fetes and concerts on their behalf.

He ended the war in Italy, eventually returning home to Nettleham Field farm, where he was presented with a Wolsey 14 car (£697 on the road!), a demob gift from his father.

Meanwhile, the Riseholme estate was sold on 20th August 1946 for £24,745 to Lindsey County Council and subsequently became a Training Centre for Agriculture and Horticulture. Nettleham Field farm (including 300 acres of land) was auctioned separately in 1951 and fetched around £11,000! Sadly, on 14th January 1949, Charles Wilson was killed in a riding accident at Pickering, Yorkshire, when a horse which he was schooling fell backwards on top of him.

But we must return to John Pepper, who eventually joined the TA and, like many young men at that time, went off to serve in World War II. His first draft was to a Scottish unit largely consisting of rough, tough lads from Glasgow who were always drinking and fighting, which was very strange and intimidating to a quiet and reserved Lincolnshire country lad!

Having served as a gunner on the Atlantic convoys between Liverpool and Canada, he eventually went to the Middle East 8th Army, where he again found himself surrounded by hard-drinking and undisciplined soldiers, only this time from the other side of the world Australians!

John worked for the new owners, the Parkers, for a time, after which he started a business of his own. He was married to Pamela Crampton of Scothern in 1952 at All Saints church, Nettleham by Rev G Herrington. Sadly, she died, leaving John with five children - William, Elizabeth, Timmy (who died later in a tragic motorcycle accident) and twins Fiona and Philip. John’s father died in 1963.

John was married again in the 1970’s to Cecily Tucker, a probation officer. She was very fond of rural life and they built a house at Kirmond le Mire.

John was now working for Fred Parks of Grimsby, a wealthy businessman who owned Boston Fleet Fish and Hullgate Shipping and who bought the Kirmond estate, building a large house and flooding the valley to create an ornamental lake in the grounds.

It was Fred who enabled John to purchase the newsagent in Binbrook, where he worked for 11 years. John became a widower again when Cecily died in the late 70’s, so he sold the shop

and moved into the bungalow at Southfields, where he lives today.

He frequently revisited Nettleham over the years and still has great affection for the village, having spent over fifty years of his life here.

It was a great privilege to meet this most interesting character and hear of his varied and interesting life and times.

Nettleham News BLACKBERRYING The bright autumn days of long, long ago, Are present now, as fond memories flow, Rewarding me with a comforting glow.

My father and I went blackberrying In the wilderness of Dunholme Airfield, Which we’d toiled to on shabby bicycles, Eager to find out what fruit it would yield.

Dad knew the best places to find berries, As he often crossed the deserted waste; So he began to work, almost at once, Whilst I found juicy specimens to taste.

The largest and choicest fruit always grew In the most inaccessible places; High up in the bushes, above our heads, Or in tangled growth which scratched our faces.

Other pickers worked eagerly near us, But we might just as well have been alone; For everyone plucked without talking, Except when fingers were pricked to the bone.

We harvested the autumn crop for jam With the surplus used for fresh, home-made pies; But, because the fruit had to be just right, It became a tedious exercise.

My father worked on meticulously, Whilst I gorged myself very greedily.

The bramble thorns tore our bare hands and arms, As we battled on industriously.

In order to gather more tender fruit, We wandered into some wilder terrain.

Dad uncovered a dark air-raid shelter, And seemed to discover his youth again.

His hands and my face were smeared with bright juice, Mixed with slight smatterings of oozing blood; For we were enthusiastic by now, Possessed with the urge to pick all we could.

Carrying two large bowls of blackberries, Hand-picked by my meticulous mentor, I smugly strode towards our rusty bikes, But tripped and shed our harvest on the floor.

The berries were strewn upon a rough track, And it took us many tiresome minutes, To retrieve our hard-earned reward of fruit Together with the debris mixed in it.

We pedalled homewards in the pouring rain, Apprehensive about our reception.

Mother asked why the harvest was so poor, But I could not hide behind deception.

Tearfully, I admitted my mistake, Abashed by my sheer inadequacy; My mum replied: “Next time I’ll come with you, To make sure that the job’ s done properly”.

I put a brave face on my shortcomings, But knew I’d let down father and mother.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the fruit pies,

DESTINATION LINCOLN Have you tried turning out of Greetwell Lane About 5 o’clock at night?

I don’t mean turning left, that’s easy, I mean turning right.

The traffic moves forward, nose to tail, With never a car-sized slot; However keen to join the flow, I’m stuck here in this spot.

They’ve built a slip road for turning in,

Although the jam was like any other.

I realize now, that the main pleasure Lay in the gathering of the harvest; As I got to know my father better, And days in his company proved the best.

For he was stationed far overseas, During most of my early childhood years; So a chance to be on my own with him, Gave me the time to allay many fears.

But what about turning out?

I wish that I could re-experience, The presence and the endless tolerance Of dad, who forgave my incompetence.

Control the to-and-froing.

Some traffic lights would solve the problem, Or perhaps a roundabout.

Of all the seasons of the year, The autumn season is most dear; For then we gather in the spoil Of many months of care and toil; And feel our grateful hearts expand To the great gladness in the land.

THE POPPY

NETTLEHAM ON AN AUTUMN NIGHT

The overlapping, crimson petals shimmer, Reflecting life-enhancing rays,

The stillness of a late evening stroll

As they sway on fragile, sap-filled stems,

Is scarcely disturbed by the murmurings of a gentle breeze,

At the mercy of the unpredictable elements.

Sadly, their beauty is transitory, For after a brief season of splendour,

As the moon rises to reveal an unfamiliar world.

Nocturnal creatures emerge

When as a boy I used to see The busy reapers, full of glee, Go forth with sickles in their hand To shear the harvest of the land, The sheaves were very neatly bound, The stubble left upon the ground.

This, for the times, became too slow, And harvest men were taught to mow, With one to gather, one to tie, The work was done right speedily.

But, now, the scythe aside is thrust,

They are faced with an inevitable decline.

And begin to pursue their nightly activities.

Overnight, vibrant head-dresses

A portly hedgehog scuffles

May fall to the earth,

Through a pile of leaves,

Appearing to be lost forever.

Snuffling with anticipation.

And with the sickle left to rust.

Our sires would be amazed, I trow, To see the way they do it now.

A huge machine, by horses drawn, Now shears the cornfields like a lawn; Adjusts the sheaves, then ties with band, And lays then for the stowkers hand.

Where the poppy flourished.

Restoring Mrs Nethercootes Sent in by Revd Gordon Sleight, Vicar of All Saints Parish Church She was one of the most important women in Nettleham. Her grandfather was Henry Randes of Holbeach, the first married Bishop of Lincoln. Her father Thomas Randes was an important officer of the Archdeacons of Lincoln and Stow, and of the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral.

She married Walter Nethercootes in 1591 or ‘92 and lived in style in a large property in Nettleham, which belonged to the Dean and Chapter. She died in 1603 and was commemorated by a beautifully carved and rather sober plaque in the south aisle of Nettleham church.

400 years later, her memorial had become damaged and dirty. It had been robbed of some of its inlaid decorative features and the inscription was virtually illegible. But in this fourth centenary of her death her memorial has regained something of its former dignified glory, as a result of recent conservation work.

Below an heraldic shield, which combines the arms of Nethercootes and Randes, the Latin inscription translates:

Autumn Recipes from the Nettleham Wine Club In this season of mellow fruitfulness, the Nettleham Wine Club has sent in a number of recipes for some wines for you to make at home using the autumnal harvest PARSNIP AND ORANGE WINE

BLACKBERRY TABLE WINE

To make 2 gallons of dessert-style wine, you will require:

To make 1 gallon you will require:

5kg Parsnips These require scrubbing clean, topping and tailing. Chop into sections as required for roasting. Put into enough water to just cover and bring to the boil and simmer until tender (no more than about 10 minutes). Strain and bag up the parsnip sections and freeze, ready for the Sunday roast.

1kg Bananas Skinned, broken into pieces and simmered in the parsnip juice until they go fluffy. Strain and discard the bananas.

3kg Sugar Dissolve in the juice, allow to cool then add: 3 teaspoons of pectolase 1 teaspoon of amylase Leave for 24 hours, then add: 500ml white grape juice concentrate Gervin No.6 yeast rehydrated 3ltr unsweetened orange juice 8 teaspoons Tronozymol 2 teaspoons Bentonite 3 teaspoons Tartaric acid 4 teaspoons Tannin 2 vitamin B1 tablets.

1/2 Vanilla pod Top up to 10litres and keep under airlock conditions and ferment out to dry.

Then add: 2 Camden tablets 1 teaspoon of Potassium sorbate

3lb ripe blackberries 2lb Sultanas 2l/41b Sugar 1lb Bananas 1 litre unsweetened apple juice Camden tablet 1 teaspoon Tartaric Acid Pectic Enzyme Yeast Nutrient Yeast Place blackberries into a fermentation bin and crush with potato masher.

Chop sultanas in food processor and add to the fermentation bin.

Cut bananas to one inch long, just cover with water and simmer until soft. Remove fruit and add resulting liquid to fermentation bin.

Dissolve sugar in one litre of boiling water and pour over contents of fermentation bin.

Add apple juice and one crushed Campden tablet.

Put on lid and allow to cool.

Make up yeast starter and when ready, add to fermentation bin together with Tartaric acid, pectic enzyme and yeast nutrient.

Ferment for 5 days, stirring twice daily to break hard crust.

Strain contents and transfer to a sterilised demi-john.

Top up to one gallon with cool, boiled water.

Continue fermentation to finish.

After 24 hours add the two-part Kwik Klear.

This should be clear and drinkable in one month but will improve a great deal over a 6-8 month maturation.

This wine throws a heavy sediment so will probably need two rackings before bottling.

This wine has won me a few competitions, even up to National standard. It is also a great wine to make, because the parsnips are still there to be eaten at the end of it all!

MEDIUM WHITE APRICOT WINE Approx alcohol content: 12% To make 4.5 litres of wine, you will require: A: Starter Grape juice concentrate (white) Sugar Gervin B yeast Yeast nutrient Vitamin B

250ml 250gms 1 sachet 5gms 2 tablets

B: Main fermentation Dried apricots (chopped) 500gms Pectolase 5gms Sodium metabisulphite (10% sol) or 5ml Camden tablet Sugar 500gms (approx) Tartaric acid 5gms Tannin 10ml Bentonite 5gms C: Stabilising Potassium sorbate Sodium metabisulphite (10%sol) or Camden tablet

Make up the yeast starter as instructions.

Dissolve the sugar in boiling water, add the grape juice and make up to 2 litres with cold water. Add the yeast starter and ferment down to 1010 or less.

B. Cover the fruit with water, simmer for 10 minutes and leave to soak. When cool, add pectolase and sodium metabisulphite solution, mash well and leave for 24 hours. Press the fruit, keeping the pulp for other recipes if desired. Make the juice up to 2 litres and calculate the sugar content. Add to the fermenting grape juice with the remaining ingredients and sufficient sugar (as a syrup) to give an equivalent starting gravity of 1080 in 5 litres. Top up to 4.5 litres and ferment out to dry.

C. Rack off the sediment. Stabilise with potassium sorbate and sodium metabisulphite.

Fine and filter as preferred. Top up with the remaining 1/2 litre of water. Sweeten to approx 1005.

Nettleham News of Yesteryear

The masthead of the original Nettleham News from the 1950s, produced by the Revd George Herrington

I am much indebted to Malcolm Leaning for information about the origins of Nettleham News and also for the loan of the above 1950s masthead and the two sides of the Parish Council Bulletin from June 1981 (see pages 58/59).

When Geoff Clark, (who many readers will remember as the previous Editor of this magazine) retired as head of the printing department at Lincolnshire County Council, he offered to try and produce a replacement magazine which he anticipated would be financed by advertisements. The Parish Council welcomed this suggestion and the idea was developed.

It was in the 1950s when the then vicar of Nettleham, George Herrington (a former journalist) first produced the Nettleham News, writing the outer four pages of local news, into which was then inserted the venerable Church Illustrated magazine.

The monthly publication was then sold around the village for 6d (21/2p).

The birth of the new Nettleham News was described in the Spring 2003 edition, which marked the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the very first edition in spring 1983.

Later, just before the current Nettleham News was started, the Parish Council produced a Nettleham Parish Council Bulletin four times a year at an annual cost of £80.00. An example of this publication (dated June 1981) appears on pages 58/59.

As Malcolm says: “Just contrast the Nettleham Parish Council Bulletin, which the public were paying for through their rates, with the free magazine which we enjoy now. I wonder what it would cost the village today without the advertisers!”.

Too right, Malcolm - it is only through the funds generated by the advertisements that the magazine exists at all and I would like to take this opportunity to once again extend the thanks of everyone in the village for their continued support over the years.

I know many of you keep the magazine and use it as a source of reference when you need a job doing and it is indeed a useful directory to have on the shelf! (And if you do utilise the services of one of the local businesses, do make sure that you mention Nettleham News).

I also know that the advertisers greatly value your custom. So much so that there are currently a considerable number of names on the waiting list for advertising space in the magazine!

It’s What Everyone Reads!

My grateful thanks go to the contributors who regularly send in news, articles, poems, photographs and other contributions for Nettleham News. Please do keep them coming!

As I walk around the village, I see posters and other notices about forthcoming village events and I wonder why this information hasn’t been forwarded to this magazine for publication.

I really do try and make the magazine as interesting as possible and frequently appeal to readers to send in more material for consideration, but for some reason there is a reluctance to do so.

However, as Editor of the magazine, I am sometimes struggling for enough material to include in these pages to maintain a lively and interesting publication with lots of variety. There is so much going on out there and yet people seem reluctant to share their news, views and experiences.

After all - it goes through every letterbox within the Nettleham Parish boundary what better way to ensure that everyone knows about your next fundraising event?

Editor: Isn’t it strange that way back in 1981, when the number of vehicles on the roads was considerably less than today, the Parish Council were even then commenting on indiscriminate parking in the village, which could lead to accidents, and urging people to park considerately.

I notice that it is Church Street which is cited as the notable example and, of course, despite efforts to encourage motorists to use the Co-op car park, when doing their shopping, the situation remains largely unchanged to the present day. Will we never learn!

Yes, it’s a busy village centre as it should be, with lots of vehicles coming and going throughout the day. But parking both sides, particularly at the narrow end near The Plough and at the blind corner near the church, inevitably causes obstruction and a real danger to everyone.

All Saints Church who we are and what we do from the Revd Gordon Sleight, Vicar of All Saints Parish Church, Nettleham Nettleham News has carried a number of recent articles about aspects of the history of All Saints Church and about recent restoration work.

Nettleham & Cherry Willingham Surgery Appointment System Update Firstly we would like to apologise for the recent problems - we know there have been some difficulties for our patients trying to access appointments especially at 8.30am by telephone.

Therefore we are introducing several changes, including the installation of an extra telephone line to increase access, especially between the 8.309.00am period in the mornings. This results in four to five lines (including Cherry Willingham) up to 10.00am.

We have also gone back to putting four weeks, instead of two weeks, appointments on the system and 40% of these you will be able to book in advance.

Therefore there should be more appointments available for you to see your regular GP, although you may have to wait slightly longer. These appointments are ideal for elderly patients needing to arrange transport.

The government has stated that all patients should be able to see a GP (though not necessarily the GP of their choice) within 48 hours of contacting the practice and we are currently achieving this.

We are now monitoring the number of appointments we are offering so we don’t go below a minimum amount.

However, the demand frequently outweighs the capacity, so whichever system we use, it inevitably won’t meet everyone’s expectations.

We have recently done a second survey on the Advanced Access Appointment System and there is still a majority who prefer this system. Therefore we will continue with Advanced Access, but monitor it with the above new introductions.

It is worth remembering that under the previous system we had, many complained regarding the length of

time waiting for appointments. The current system is a compromise between being able to pre-book and to action the Government directions of appointment availability on the day.

Please use the system responsibly; in some instances you could be seen by our Nurse Practitioner who can prescribe and consult on acute illnesses.

If you only require advice, NHS Direct might be able to help you (Telephone 0845 4647).

There are times within the day where you can obtain an individual telephone consultation with a doctor for advice, when a face-to-face appointment is not necessary, eg results of tests, medication problems, etc.

Please bear with us, we want the system to work just as much as you do!

The ‘Seaside’ comes to Nettleham!

“Nettie” the famous puppet, appeared each day, helping the children to understand the stories and generally being rather naughty! The children were also entertained each day by a small band of very amateur thespians, who performed a slapstick style drama!

Almost 60 children, mainly from the village schools, enjoyed a week by the ‘sea’ at the ‘Seaside Rock’ holiday club, held at Nettleham Methodist Church during the summer holidays.

During the week, children enjoyed a variety of activities and there was never a dull moment!

Everyone joined in enthusiastically with the lively action songs and there was always a host of volunteers for some rather messy and revolting games! Each day the children made a different craft on a seaside theme, including painted pebbles, mosaics, shell photo frames, sunglasses and painted pencil cases. Lots of ‘seaside’ style snacks were consumed, including rock cakes, sticks of rock, shrimp sweets and ice lollies.

The whole club was based around the Bible stories of Peter the fisherman and how his life changed when he met Jesus. At the end of the week, lots of children won certificates for being kind, helpful, polite and for listening well. Every child was also presented with a Bible or a story book to take home.

The week culminated in an all-age family service on the Sunday morning. All parents and friends were invited to come along and see what the children had been up to during the ‘Seaside Rock’ week.

Now we can’t wait for next year’s club!!

NETTLEHAM CONTEMPORARY MODERN MUSIC SCHOOL My name is Miss Wendy Vause. I was born in Lincolnshire and grew up around Caistor. After doing my A levels at Grimsby College of Technology, I went to live in London and to Middlesex University, where I obtained my degree. I bought a house and spent 21 years in the ‘bubble’ of city life.

However, in recent years I yearned for my country roots and decided to relocate myself back in Lincolnshire and, after 4 months of searching, I finally decided on Nettleham.

I work part time as a music teacher at William Farr Comprehensive School, and I run my own private school from Scothern Road. The idea of the school is to provide additional teaching for year 7 groups onwards, with programmes which are designed to fulfil and support the National Curriculum, including requirements in music technology.

My approach is contemporary and modern and the instruments I use include drum kits, electric guitars and keyboards, using power amplifiers and other technical

equipment. My tenet is to make music fun - to bring out the love of it through practical application, and to stimulate learning in a dynamic environment. Group learning and performing are mainstays in the programme, and the school is not just for youngsters, it is for anyone of any age to learn and/or build confidence.

I hope to expand over the years and I will be offering an After-school Club, which starts Monday 8 September from 4.00pm 7.00pm (Monday to Friday) and 10.00am 4.00pm on Saturdays. I hope soon to be showcasing the students, so you will be seeing many more youngsters playing instruments around the local venues - for example at the Nettleham Carnival.

I am very happy to be back in Lincolnshire and I look forward to meeting many more local residents as time goes on. Happy days!

Nettleham Arts & Crafts Workshop Exhibition

I

do hope lots of you went to the Nettleham Childrens’ Arts & Crafts Exhibition, which was held at the Old School on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August. If you didn’t, you really missed a treat!

Eleanor Stevenson, who runs the workshop, with a great amount of help from Ruth Lynch, showed me round the exhibition, and the enthusiasm and exhuberance of the children shone through in their work.

Some children who attend the workshop regularly were also there, actually making things whilst I watched, and enjoying every minute of it.

Eleanor is clearly a great source of inspiration to the children, but then she is the first to admit they they also give her a whole range of new ideas to develop.

From the moment I entered the exhibition (and even before I stepped through the door - see photograph above), I was simply stunned not only at the quantity, but more importantly, the quality of the work, and as I wandered around the exhibition the sheer variety of different media and subjects, took your breath away!

The sheer enjoyment in being part of this creative environment is clear in the faces of these youngsters who were there on the day to demonstrate their skills

The vibrance of the colours, the richness of the textures, the range of the materials, the variety of the subjects - all had come together in a very imaginative and original way, to create a truly wonderful exhibition.

Nettleham is very fortunate to have this creative amenity for children and I eagerly look forward to the next exhibition.

A Very Slippery Customer!

The photograph illustrates three youngsters, Sophie Rodgers, Alex Finan and Samantha Stevenson, who recently caught an eel in the Beck.

The heatwave in early August really brought the fishing nets and jam-jars out in force, with many youngsters (mostly in bare feet) dipping in the Beck for tiddlers - one reason why it is so important not to throw any glass bottles or other sharp objects into the water!

A Mystery Solved?

Regular readers of the magazine may remember the article which appeared on page 43 of the winter 2001 edition of Nettleham News in which I described the small button (approximately 15mm in diameter) which I had unearthed whilst digging in my garden (See photograph at right).

In a sequel to that find, by a remarkable coincidence, I was, with some certainty, able to determine the origin of the button.

Clearly having been gold-coloured at some time and with the distinctive intials QH, I thought that this must be something more significant than just an everyday garment button. Although the gilt had largely corroded and peeled away during its time in the soil, I contacted a London company by the name of Firmins (the wording being just discernible on the reverse of the button) who were indeed still in the business of manufacturing metal badges and buttons.

From the description and photograph which I sent them, they surmised that it was, in fact, very likely to have been a button from a hunting jacket, possibly the Quorn Hunt, although they had no means of verifying this suggestion from their records.

Now when John Pepper contacted me (resulting in the article on pages 41-49), he provided me with a number of different items, amongst which was a book entitled

The Burton Hunt by R B Fountain. The hardback cover was, appropriately, bound in bright red and there, in the centre of the front cover, was an exact replica of the illustration above, but with BH (Burton Hunt) instead of QH, embossed in gold.

So this button probably popped off the red hunting jacket of an enthusiastic visiting rider as he (or she?) galloped across what is now my back garden and perhaps attempted a strenuous jump, over a fence or hedge, in hot pursuit of a fox, many years ago.

I had always been rather dubious about the suggestion that a hunt originating in Leicestershire would venture this far into the county of Lincolnshire in pursuit of their quarry, but whilst reading the book it became apparent that it was quite common for members of one hunt to join another neighbouring meet as a visitor, and to participate in the activity far from their usual hunting country.
