Gardening Information

Spring is nearly here again, at last!

Due to limited space in the magazine, I have decided to suspend this feature which used to appear regularly on page 5, to create more space for other items.

In the early days of Nettleham News, Bill Needham, then Chairman of the Nettleham Gardeners Association, used to regularly contribute an article on this subject and it was always very popular with readers.

No more long, dreary, grey days of winter the birds are singing, the sap is rising and, just like the burgeoning buds on the trees, here is the 20th Anniversary spring edition of the magazine just bursting with vitality and promise!

There are quite a number of articles and features in this edition which have a spring theme to them and I would like to thank all the contrbutors who kindly sent them in for publication. Now let’s have lots more for the summer issue, please.

More Henry Winn Poetry Following on from the article on pages 14/15 of the last edition of the magazine, on page 58 there are some more poems by Henry Winn. Two of these are about spring and so are particularly appropriate for this first edition of the new year.

Ex Residents of our Village I have contacted a number of Editors of other village magazines in the immediate area, requesting them to include a short piece asking if any residents now living in these villages, who may once have lived in Nettleham, have any fond memories or old photographs of our village.

You never know, some more interesting old stories and photographs may turn up from someone outside the village!

Over the years, during the course of my involvement in this magazine, I have accumulated quite a number of historic photographs of Nettleham and I am always delighted when any new ones come to light which nobody has ever seen before. Do you have any which you would like to share with other readers?

If you have, do please contact me at the above address.

The clubs and organizations which made use of this facility were relatively few in number and I understand their members receive a regular update of forthcoming meetings anyway.

So, unless I am deluged by a sackful of mail demanding the reinstatement of this hitherto regular item, I can assume that it will not be missed by too many readers in future editions!

One change of meeting date which I have particularly been requested to notify is the Wine & Beermaking Circle, the April meeting of which has been changed to Friday 25th.

Nettleham News Crossword Once again there is a prize crossword on page 35 kindly devised by Eric Burton.

This one will test your local knowledge and, as usual, there is a £10.00 prize for the first correct solution to be opened.

Congratulations to Christine Edison of Lacy Close, who was the winner of the Christmas Crossword in the last edition of the magazine, and for those of you who were unable to finish it, the solution appears on page 35.

Humorous Caption Competition There were a number of entries in the Nettleham News Humorous Caption Competition which appeared on page 35 of the last winter edition, but the winner was David Kamen with his suggestion of: “Wait till the Mrs sees these cool trainers I found at the dump”.

Well done David and put the £10.00 prize towards a new pair for yourself!

Sadly Bill died last year, and a tree was planted in the new cemetery by members of the Gardening Association, in memory of this much respected member of our community (see page 23).

On page 64 of this edition there is the first in what is anticipated will be a regular series of articles about gardening.

And don’t forget the Annual Show in the autumn - now is the time to be planting the flowers and vegetables which will win all the prizes at this popular village event!

Nettleham Carnival On the Nettleham Noticeboard, on page 3, you will see that the Carnival Team are already planning for this extremely popular annual village event, which will take place on Saturday 12 July this year.

New members of the team are always most welcome to assist with the organisation of the Carnival and if you would like to help and be part of this friendly group - they usually meet once a month in The Plough.

Readers’ Letters Bus crash on Brookfield Avenue due to ice on the road My wife and I were getting ready for work on Monday, 6th January, when at 7 o’clock there was an almighty bang outside. We rushed to open the front door and found a bus had skidded on the corner of Brookfield Avenue and smashed into a lamp-post at the end of our drive.

Fortunately, the driver was not injured and he had no passengers on board at the time, but the bus was badly damaged and its window screen shattered.

The state of the road was appalling - covered by sheet ice, I could not even stand up on it! There is a bus stop at the exact spot were the bus crashed and if anybody had been waiting there, they could well have been killed!!!

The driver stated he was only driving very very slowly at the time - a good job, as his bus may otherwise have ended up hitting our house!!

Introducing...

I am recently new to the village and as you will note from the above address my husband and I have moved into the White Hart.

Through recent discussion with both customers and past landlords we are aware that the house used to be a magistrates court. I am wondering if any one could help me to find out more information about the White Hart’s past history.

As new tenants at the White Hart (since November 2002), I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves, Phil and Christine, landlord and landlady, and my elder son, Darren.

Since we moved into the village we have come into contact with some wonderful people.

I would also like to say that the people of Nettleham are warm-hearted and friendly, which in turn has made us feel very welcome.

Many of you, I’m sure, have eaten a good meal at the White Hart in the past and I would like to assure you this delight is sure to continue.

Darren is now chef, and has incorporated some of the White Hart’s old favourites into the menu, as well as some new dishes to awaken your taste buds.

Darren’s experience in the restaurant business is varied. Until November he was head chef at the popular Hari Kumar’s restaurant in the Bailgate area of Lincoln. Some of his other achievements include Sealeys, Castle Hotel and Brown’s Pie Shop. Darren started his training at Lincoln college nine years ago, after which he undertook a post at a five-star hotel at Windermere in the lake district.

Darren would like me to add that all his produce is fresh and home made. Sweets will vary from day to day, as these are also home made. (His speciality to my mind is Baileys Cheesecake, the recipe for which still remains a closely guarded secret, even from me!).

As for me, this venture is completely new. For the past 30 years I have worked as a staff nurse, mainly at St Georges hospital until 1995, when my career took me to Lincoln County hospital.

I enjoyed my work there very much, but felt ready for new challenges. I feel that the White Hart can give me this.

I will end now and hope that our time here in Nettleham will continue to be a long and happy friendship with you all.

Fundraising for Sight Savers I have now had great pleasure in sending a further cheque for £50.00 to Sight Savers as a result of the sale of Santas, snowmen and Christmas stockings, all containing goodies.

Thank you so much to Glynis for allowing sales in her salon and thank you ladies (and perhaps a few gents too!) for your support. This resulted in a total of £18.50 being raised for the charity.

More Thoughts on the Village Ducks I would like to know who has given the village councillors permission to say the ducks have got to be killed off.

Who do they think they are to sit in judgement? The ducks are part of the village.

So when the ducks have been killed off, why not put a road over the Beck. Then, where there was once ducks, there will be cars.

Will they try to kill the cars off, or will they put parking meters up?

Parish Council News Traffic Issues A special council meeting was held on 20 January 2003 to discuss the points raised at the public meeting held on 30 October 2002 (see previous issue of Nettleham News) at which proposals were presented by representatives of Lincolnshire County Council Highways Department, following an earlier public meeting held 4 April 2001.

It is a clear fact that the congestion around the village centre, whilst irritating at times, also does slow down traffic, which has the effect of reducing the likelihood of accidents. The delays are quite insignificant when compared with those of actually getting into Lincoln. A lot of the problems are caused by lack of consideration for others by drivers and parking without any thought for other road users. The possibility of limiting parking in Church Street would need policing by traffic wardens, which would add to the financial burden on villagers. In addition, restricting parking in Church Street would also affect the residents and traders there, as they would be affected by the limited parking times.

A one-way system would be impractical because of the sharpness of the bends for larger vehicles and could also increase speeds at quiet times, leading to the likelihood of accidents. Parking in front of the schools is mainly at very specific times of the day and is a universal feature of “the school run” which is seen all over the country. This will only improve when parents leave their cars at home and walk their children to school. Further restricting of parking in front of the schools will only move the problem further down the road.

As an initial step to improve the traffic situation in the village, it was decided that the following changes be proposed to the County Council.

1. The bus stop for Lincoln-bound buses on The Green outside Troika shop/Halifax Bank be marked on the road, making it an enforceable offence to park there. This should stop the buses having to block the road whilst picking up and dropping passengers and reduce congestion at that narrow section of road where cars are now frequently parked on both sides of the road, making it difficult for other road users to pass.

2. The provision of invalid parking at the front of the Co-op.

3. Paths across The Green to be amalgamated, with a ramp in front of the Co-op to facilitate disabled access.

Once these changes, if agreed by the County Council, have been introduced, the effects on the

traffic will be observed and the situation will be reviewed again to gauge the effectiveness of the measures and decide whether other action is necessary. (See also page 62)

Wind Power Generation

Sports

Whilst the council is generally in favour of alternative green energy generation, the site and size/visual impact of these generators does cause concern. (See also page 47)

Tennis Club A proposal has been made for the Parish Council to sell or lease the village tennis courts at Mulsanne for commercial development as an indoor facility by Tennis Buddies of Woodhall Spa. The committee of the Tennis club were supportive of the plan, as it was seen as a way of improving the facilities and hence lead to an increase in membership. Whilst the council is keen to see the development of sports activities in Nettleham, it also has to take into account the other effects in the locality in terms of visual impact, as well as increased traffic and parking.

The proposal also required the use of additional land, which was currently used for football training. This would need to be relocated, which would then impact the cricket club. In addition, planning permission would have to be granted for the change.

The council finally resolved to reject the proposal for Mulsanne, but were supportive of the idea of indoor facilities on a more appropriate site and would try to assist the club wherever possible.

Police The Nettleham police station will be out of action for 4 weeks while some renovation work is undertaken. In the meantime, Welton will be used. New telephone numbers will be notified for this period.

A spate of burglaries took place in Nettleham at the end of 2002, the offenders are now no longer at large. The police presence in the village has also been stepped up, with both uniformed and non-uniformed patrols.

Web Site The new village website is now live and residents are recommended to visit the site and see for themselves (see page 5 of this edition of Nettleham News).

Water Extraction An application has been made for the extraction of water from the Beck, by J S F Hood Ltd, between November and March each year. The Parish Council has raised a holding objection to the scheme, the decision is now with the Environment Agency.

Star Energy has proposed erecting large wind turbines at the oil extraction sites around the area, one being just south of Nettleham.

Ducks A number of letters (originating outside the village) have been received expressing concern about the decision to reduce the duck population in line with local demand.

Following a canvas to test the views of residents which was organised by the Parish Council last year, residents will recall that a substantial majority, of those who responded, favoured a reduction of up to 75% in the total duck population of the village.

Since that view was expressed, the Clerk to the Parish Council has been engaged in seeking a humane method to reduce the number of ducks and taken advice from specialist bodies in the process.

The Parish Council have always said that they would endeavour to find a humane method of reduction and, following lengthy consultations, it was thought that it may be possible to seek initially up to 50% reduction in the numbers by effecting a removal to a suitable area identified in another county.

It transpired that the method of achieving this reduction was by catching and caging the ducks for physical removal, which would be undertaken over a period of 10 days. This, in effect, would have met with the wishes of the Parish Council (if successful) in achieving a humane reduction. However, in the final analysis it became clear that the exercise was not viable in economic terms, in that the costs exceeded the sum of £11,000. The Parish Council naturally felt that they could not commit this amount of public expenditure to implement the suggestion.

Following further discussion by the Parish Council they have agreed to exhibit ‘Please do not feed the ducks” signs to the wall of the Beck and to ask the Environmental Health Officer to take action to inspect and eliminate any rat/vermin problem which currently exists, following the exposure along the beck area of food left by the public for the ducks and not consumed by them.

The Parish Council will continue to monitor this situation.

Farewell to Peter and Welcome to Gary Peter Sharpe said farewell to the village after 11 years as Manager of Nettleham Co-op. Well respected by his staff and the people of the village, a total of £500 was collected for him as a leaving present, the cheque being presented to him by members of staff on 10 December 2002.

Replacing Peter is Gary Smith, who has worked for Lincoln Co-op for 18 years. He and his wife Jenny have lived at Glentham since 1995.

NETTLEHAM AND CHERRY WILLINGHAM PATIENT SUPPORT GROUP Are you registered with the Nettleham and Cherry Willingham Medical Practice?

If so it may interest you to know that the Practice has a Patient Support Group (PSG).

This all sounds quite daunting and formal, but the PSG consists of a group of ordinary people, just like you. We have bi-monthly meetings at the surgery where we try to fulfil the above criteria.

We cannot make a difference if we do not know your views on what is required, needs changing, or indeed what is working well.

It’s important to get some feedback on the initiatives we have introduced.

Our main purpose however, is to provide a means of communication between you, the patients, and the Practice. Hopefully this article will raise people’s awareness of the group, promote more responses and is an opportunity to air your views, by becoming a committee member. We really need some input from Nettleham patients!!!

LIVES Well doesn’t time fly...it seems like only yesterday that we took possession of an automatic defibrillator from LIVES Head Office and became fully operational in Nettleham. It is actually twelve months ago since this valuable piece of equipment was handed over to us, having been purchased with money donated by residents and local businesses in the village.

Since that time Nettleham has had a volunteer at the end of a telephone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to respond to any life-threatening emergency that may arise in the village. All the volunteers have undergone regular refresher training throughout the year and have all been on an oxygen therapy course, allowing them to use oxygen, if necessary, to aid a patient’s recovery.

During the first year we have been called out on about 40 occasions to patients suffering from various complaints such as breathing difficulties, asthma attacks, chest pains, strokes and heart attacks. Thankfully we haven’t had to use the defibrillator yet and I am sure that all the patients that we have attended have all benefited from the prompt treatment and reassurance they have received, prior to the arrival of the ambulance paramedics.

Although we are up and running, we could still do with some more responders, especially during the day. If you have some spare time, possibly a morning or an afternoon and would like to help, why not give us a ring to find out more information.

Nettleham Library News Do you like a certain author but have read all their books?

Do you like a particular genre of fiction? Do you simply not know what to read next?

Nettleham Library has the answer in the form of a useful little book called Who Else Writes Like...?: a readers guide to fiction.

Who Else is designed to help anyone who enjoys reading fiction to expand the number of writers they read. The book lists over 1,500 authors, and with each name suggests others who write in a similar way.

The basis for the initial selection of authors is the most popular according to the Public Lending Rights list, with additional suggestions from professional librarians across the country.

In the main, authors are only included when they have three books to their name and when their novels are easily obtainable from bookshops and libraries. Who Else also has handy lists of authors by genre and literary prize winners. The book is kept by the study table in Nettleham Library and everyone is welcome to browse.

Do you like to choose what to read by browsing and seeing what tempts you? Then the website www.whichbook.net is the perfect tool to help you find a bit of what you fancy!

Instead of using the standard ways of organising books for choice such as title, author or genre, this innovative website lets you build up the elements of what you consider to be a good

read. Instead of choosing a crime novel, you could opt for something challenging, unpredictable and funny. When you’ve made your choices, the website will offer you a selection of titles to try, and if none of them appeal, you can just change your choices and try again. With over 20 million different permutations anything is possible!!! All of the books entered on the website are read by one of a team of 150 library and literary organisations nationwide, specially trained to create entries.

The site has been praised by publications and organisations such as The Bookseller and The Arts Council with The Guardian describing it as: “simulating word-of-mouth recommendation of an intelligent, well-read and empathetic friend” If you want to have a go at choosing a read this way, but do not have access to the Internet at home, just pop along to Nettleham Library where free and fast Internet facilities are available for all.

COURT IN THE ACT! Nettleham Tennis Club Our club is at the Mulsanne Park and Sports Ground, off Field Close, with 5 all-weather floodlit courts - plenty of space for everyone to play. The club now has a new committee that is working hard to ensure that anyone who can play is made welcome, and anyone who would like to learn to play is given the opportunity.

Our club coach, who is an LTA qualified coach, Katherine Braund, currently runs children’s coaching sessions all year round for juniors.

There are 2 sessions on Thursdays for children who have already been playing. This will increase to 3 groups to cater for beginners from 6th March 2003.

April sees the start of our “new” season when coaching will be made available for adults who have never played, and for those who have played in years gone by and would like to have a go again. No racket? No problem! Simply borrow one of ours until you get fixed up!

Our club has regular club sessions - ladies groups play on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings throughout the year. Friday nights will start again in April and are open to 19

all adults irrespective of ability. These nights are always popular and good fun. Monday nights are for those who are a little more serious and may want to represent us in various teams and leagues.

We are affiliated to the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association), which provides many benefits, including the chance to enter a club ballot for Wimbledon Tickets. You never know, join the club this month and in July you could have a front row seat to watch Tim Henman win Wimbledon!

A date for your diaries is Thursday 18th April when we host a “Play Tennis Day”. This is YOUR chance to come and play for FREE. The activities on this day are supervised by Katherine, the club coach. There are fun and games with prizes to be won. There will be sessions for children of all ages and an adult session too. Details will be posted around the village nearer the time.

Police News had you taken to minimise the risk of becoming a victim?’. What will you say?

Welcome to the Spring edition of Police News - I hope the New Year has started well for you all and things are going well.

In a previous edition of Police News I mentioned that Nettleham police station is to be revamped. The more astute of you will have noticed that the work has now begun. This started on the 17th February 2003 and is expected to take four to six weeks to complete. During that time the police station will close to the public and the extension number, 5796, will be inoperative.

The officers that work from Nettleham police station will be temporarily based at Welton police station. The number to dial for Welton police station is 01673 860222.

My voicemail number and the email address remain in use, so you can still leave me a message if you wish. Whilst the police station is closed, I am aware that some people feel we would be unable to offer the quality of service we currently provide if we aren’t based in this area. I have taken those concerns on board and after speaking with area Sgt Hull and area Inspector Key, we are making use of a small camper-van type vehicle which we are parking in a prominent position in each village on a day to day basis. This vehicle is being used as a temporary base, from which my colleagues and I are working. You may have already seen it in the village. If you do see it out and about, feel free to drop in for a chat, you are more than welcome.

As some of you may already be aware, on two dates in December, Nettleham suffered a number of burglaries and breaks into sheds and garages. The method that the offenders used to gain entry to the houses was by climbing through open windows or forcing unlocked windows. As well as cash and jewellery, car keys were also taken from within the house and the occupants’ vehicles stolen.

This was a surprise to us here at Nettleham police station because throughout 2002 there was only a handful of similar offences prior to these crimes being committed. The latest on this series of burglaries is good news - a male has been charged with the offences and he is currently languishing at Her Majesty’s pleasure. Only one of the burglaries that took place is unaccounted for. However, we do have some hope on that crime after a DNA sample was taken

from the scene. It is currently being matched to others we have on the database and hopefully we will be getting a result soon. I must emphasize that it’s vitally important to check all doors and windows and make them as secure as you can. Can I also suggest that any house or car keys are hidden from view. Some thieves are using canes with hooks on the end to reach through letter boxes and cat flaps and hook keys that are left in doors or left lying around!

Crime figures for the last six months of 2002 are encouraging. Crimes in general are down across the board. The only exception was the spate of burglaries the village suffered during two nights in December. These have put a bit of a blip on the figures, which is unfortunate as it doesn’t represent the effort and hard work the community and ourselves have put into the village.

Incidents of violence in the village are down by 50% and criminal damage is down by over 15%. Other crimes which include theft are down by 60%. This is all good news for the village and credit goes to the community for it’s efforts. However, there are still one or two people and businesses who feel security is for other people and seem certain that crime won’t happen to them.

Common sense should tell you, and the media prove it on a daily basis, that anyone can be a victim of crime no matter how remote the location may be. If you are a victim of crime one of the first questions I will be asking is ‘what security measures 21

You will have noticed over the past few weeks that the weather has become colder and people are coming out to iced-over cars. Many people have been seen to leave their car engines running to de-ice their cars whilst returning inside their homes. This, quite obviously, is a dangerous and foolish thing to do. There have been many instances of cars being stolen because of this practice and many insurance companies won’t pay out if you leave your car engine running and leave the car unattended. You may live in a relatively quiet village, but opportunist thieves operate everywhere, so take the proper precautions and don’t become a victim. De-icer and a scraper are much cheaper to buy than another car or inflated insurance premiums!

On the 28 March 2003 the first of Lincolnshire Police’s Community Support Officers should be taking to the streets. For those of you who aren’t aware of what they are, let me explain. The Home Office has selected a number of police forces to trial the Community Support Officers.

Lincolnshire was chosen as one of those counties and the Support Officers will provide high visibility patrols in the towns and villages to give reassurance to its community and to deal with the ‘quality of life’ issues. They will be used in a number of areas and will be able to give out Penalty Tickets for cycling on the pavement, littering, dog fouling and other minor offences. They will also be given powers to seize alcohol and cigarettes from anyone under-age, who is in possession of them and have the power to demand names and addresses. They will also deal with minor public order issues and low level disorder.

They will be wearing yellow and blue jackets and will work between the hours of 8am and 10pm. Some people have been sceptical about the introduction of these officers, but I would like to reassure those people that they are not replacing Special Constables or Traffic Wardens, they are an additional resource funded by the Home Office.

Nettleham police station will be getting one of the new Officers. This will provide extra flexibility for regular officers and will enable us to target problem areas more

Police News (continued) effectively than at present. The introduction of the Community Support Officer is bringing us into uncharted waters, both for the regular officers and for the community.

I welcome any increase in personnel and I’m sure it will benefit us all round.

When you see the officer on patrol please make a point of making him or her welcome. Remember, everyone that works from Nettleham police station is here for the same reason; to reduce crime, to assist the public when we can and to provide reassurance through high visibility patrolling. These issues are important to us all and your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Since I mentioned it in the last issue of Police News, I have made a number of visits to the local Cubs and Brownies in the

area to advise them on Road Safety and about not talking to strangers, among other things. If you run such a club or belong to another organization, school or society and would like me to pay you a visit to give a talk, or just to drop in and say hello, then please contact me at your convenience.

Towards the end of 2002 and into 2003, I received an unexpected number of requests for the Shed Alarms and Personal Attack Alarms. This was a pleasant surprise and I’m pleased that many of you have taken my advice and decided to increase your security. Due to the unprecedented demand I have taken stock of more of the alarms and now have a good supply. They are still at the reasonable price of £10.00 for Shed Alarms and £5.00 for Personal Attack Alarms.

The long nights will be with us for quite a while yet, which provides the opportunist thief with more time to skulk about in the dark and remain unseen.

Don’t wait to become another statistic before you take action on security. Do it now! Anyone requiring advice on Home Security can contact the Crime Reduction Unit at Lincoln police station or contact myself.

Nettleham Village Hall Fundraising and Fun for Everyone!!!

What about Nettleham having a Scarecrow Weekend - other villages do, so why not us?

● To raise funds for the maintenance and improvement of the Village Hall - a central feature of village community life.

It would really get the community working and playing together and bring lots of visitors to our village as well.

● To raise money for local charities

We already have a very successful Carnival every summer, and this idea could become a regular event in the village calendar too.

How do we do it?

Well, supported by the Village Hall Committee, we would need around 100 people (or even more!) to make and display their scarecrows around the village.

Businesses in Nettleham, who would stand to benefit from a large number of visitors to the village, would be actively encouraged to participate.

Our schools could use this opportunity to inspire their pupils to be creative and develop their craft skills.

What are the Aims? ● To bring the community together and put Nettleham on the Lincolnshire fun map.

(You can probably think of a lot of other good causes too!).

Is this the only event?

No, there could be a number of other attractions happening on the same weekend - for instance a big Table-top Sale, a Bumper Barbecue, a Craft Fair, a Model Day - the list is endless!

But before any of this can become a reality, we really do need to get lots of names from residents who would be interested in participating in such an exciting and innovative weekend.

The Geoff Clarke Memorial Cup The Geoff Clarke Memorial Cup, donated in memory of Geoff to the Gardeners Association by his widow Jean, being presented to Margaret Walker by Joy Palmer, President, at the Gardeners Association Annual Show in September 2002 for gaining first place in the ‘My Garden’ competition. The cup is competed for by members of the Association who enter the ‘My Garden’ competition which is judged in July each year.

On the 15th December 2002, Nettleham Gardeners Association planted a Copper Beech tree in memory of Bill Needham (late vice-president) who died earlier in the year. Those present were members of the Committee, Bill’s daughter Linda, sons Paul and Ian, and brother Cyril along with Parish Councillor Janice Clayton.

The commemorative tree is located in the extended burial ground and Janice Clayton is co-ordinating the project which will make this area into a wild flower meadow.

The Nettleham Gardeners Association will be enthusiastically involved with the growing of the wild flowers in plugs, to be planted into the area.

Your countryside Your voice It is in the interests of all of us, who value the countryside and its villages, that local sub-post offices should survive. Their very existence is threatened if Child Benefit, Government Pensions or any state benefits are paid directly into personal banks.

We can insist on these entitlements being paid through the Post Office. A letter will be coming to all recipients of State Benefits asking for details of their Bank Accounts. If it is your wish to receive your entitlement through the Post Office, do not provide the details sought, but instead write boldly on the form “POST OFFICE ACCOUNT, PLEASE”. This would allow the post office to continue to derive income from the transactions and maintain its viability.

The letter will also give a telephone number to ring and ask for a form to open a POST OFFICE CARD ACCOUNT, which would allow people to continue to draw their money in the village.

If it is your wish to continue to draw your money in the village DO NOT SUPPLY DETAILS OF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. It seems likely that there will not be much helpful guidance forthcoming from either Central or Local Government on your options and certainly no encouragement to use the Post Office Account Card.

We will again be having a stand at the Lincolnshire Show this year. I do not know the stand number yet, but it will not take much finding in the Conservation Area and we would be very pleased to see you.

I would like to pass on our sincere thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of the Rock & Roll night held at the Nettleham Police Headquarters last November. The event raised £755.00, which was very kindly donated to our son, Jake Hardcastle “Limbs for Life” fund, which was set up following the loss of his right leg below the knee, after Jake contracted bacterial meningitis in April 2000.

The night was lots of fun and was very well supported by many of the people who live in Nettleham. There was a Raffle, and a small Auction and we would like to thank everyone who donated items and for those who dug deep and parted with their money on the night!

We are always overwhelmed by how generous people can be, and so thankful that we have so many good friends who continue to support events like these.

A special mention to Mike and Annette of Cottage Interiors, who organised the entertainment, food, and sold tickets for the night, and also to Lyn and Steve Toogood, who kindly donated their Juke Box for the evening and sold tickets. This all helped to make for a really good turn out. Special thanks to ‘The Rockin’ Daddies’, who gave us a great night’s entertainment and put up with lots of us trying to jive!!

It is now three years since our lives were changed so dramatically, but with the support of so many people, and with a brave and gutsy seven-year-old boy who never gives up trying, life is good again.

As you are probably aware glass recycling raises funds for FROGS (Friends of Guides and Scouts). Christmas consumption raised over £600 for our funds, so a big thank you to all of you who use the Co-op bottle banks. The money raised goes towards the upkeep of our hut and is particularly vital at present, as the roof is in urgent need of repair.

To promote increased awareness and use of the bottle banks, FROGS are organising a one-off kerbside collection of recyclable glass on the morning of 12th April 03. We hope this will be particularly useful for those of you who find it difficult to transport glass to the Co-op. Please place your glass to be recycled in a sturdy container on the boundary of your property from 9.30 am and we will endeavour to collect it by 12.00 noon.

Any fit and willing volunteers who would like to help us to collect the glass would be most welcome. Please meet in the Co-op car park at 9.45am. Your own means of transporting the glass would be most useful (car, trailer, wheelbarrow, etc) and it would be advisable to wear gloves.

The Story of Nettleham News Magazine It all began back in the autumn of 1982, when local resident Geoff Clarke, then a Parish Councillor, first suggested the idea of producing a magazine for the village.

Anyone interested in becoming part of the team was invited to a meeting at the then new pavilion at Mulsanne Park to discuss the way forward. (Quite how this appeal was broadcast throughout the village I’m not sure - for there was no Nettleham News at that time!).

On a cold, dark November evening several people, including myself, attended the meeting and a decision was taken to proceed with the production of the first edition in the spring of the following year (1983).

The first page of the original edition is reproduced opposite and introduces the team (myself included) responsible for the production of the very first edition.

As you can see, the text was all produced on a manual typewriter which then had to be cut up, arranged and ‘pasted up’ into the individual pages ready for the printers. As a professional graphic designer I became, not surprisingly, solely responsible for this very time-consuming task, but in those days there was simply no alternative way of doing it! The greater the number of pages, the longer the time required to complete the task became, eventually taking many laborious hours to complete each edition!

The typewritten articles were very carefully glued in position with Cow Gum, a gooey, messy rubber solution, which allowed the removal and re-positioning of the items, if required. In an effort to give the pages more visual appeal, the titles were created using Letraset, a system where every individual character had to be rubbed down from a sheet containing letters of the alphabet, together with numerals, punctuation marks, etc. This was a decision I was later to regret when the number of pages in the magazine increased and I was left with no alternative but to continue creating numerous article headings in this very tedious way!

Anyway, the magazine was a success - a reliable voluntary distribution network was progressively established over the years and now each and every household in Nettleham (usually!) receives a copy of the magazine four times a year, free of charge.

It must be emphasized that the only reason that the magazine has been able to exist, right from the first edition, is through the revenue generated by the advertisements.

Local businesses and other organisations have been very supportive over the years, indeed a number of them have been with us since the very first issue. Geoff Clarke acknowledges this in the original Editorial opposite, and I would like to re-iterate his gratitude to all the advertisers who have supported the magazine.

The first edition of the magazine comprised nine single A4 sheets, printed both sides in black only. The collation of the pages was achieved by members of the team walking round a table, on which the sheets had been laid out in numerical order, and picking up the pages in the correct sequence. These were then finally ‘stab-stitched’ through the left-hand margin with a hand stapler.

Eventually, the number of pages increased to the extent that this method was no longer practical, and from this time the magazine was produced by the printers as folded A3 sheets, ‘saddle-stitched’ through the spine, giving the publication a more professional appearance.

Mind you, this development did give me a few headaches in that the pages now required pasting up in pairs, and if the magazine had say 32 pages, I would find myself assembling pages 11 and 22 side by side - a tricky task if lengthy articles spanned a number of consecutive pages!

The number of boards, containing the final assembled pairs of pages, progressively increased and the portfolio, which was used to transfer these to the printers, became increasingly heavy and cumbersome.

Cupits printers at Horncastle have produced every single edition of Nettleham News since the very first one, back in 1983. They continue to give a very friendly and efficient service and also support us with their own advertisement.

The network of volunteer distributors is now well established - a number of them having been with us now for many years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them, on behalf of other residents, for their sterling efforts in delivering the magazine, come rain or shine, to every single household within the Nettleham Parish boundary.

When Geoff Clarke died recently, I took over the editorship of the magazine and continue to endeavour to uphold the quality and variety of the content, bringing news, views and commentary on the village and the folk who live in it. My thanks go to all 30

those who have submitted material for publication over the years - it is thanks to you that I am able to include such an interesting variety of subjects in the pages of the magazine, and I sincerely hope it will continue in the years to come.

The last winter 2002/3 edition was, I believe, the largest edition ever published, with a total of 68 pages, including the cover. Of course, these days the magazine is produced on computer and the entire publication is passed to the printer on CD ROM - a far cry from the early days, but still very time-consuming!

The last few editions have had full colour outside covers and, funds permitting, it is my intention to continue with this feature, which I think helps to make the magazine much more appealing and has attracted many complimentary comments since it was introduced two years ago.

The front covers of all the Nettleham News magazines published over the past twenty years are reproduced on the centre pages of this edition - they may indeed bring back memories of past years for some of our readers. For myself, I simply can’t believe that all this time has passed so quickly!

Marathon Run to Help Adam Imagine you are a healthy young man of 25, your whole future ahead of you; a girlfriend; a degree; a career and a skill for playing rugby. One Saturday afternoon, you go into a tackle as usual, but this time something different happens and you end up in hospital. You’ve broken your neck and can’t feel or move anything - you are paralysed from the neck down and the doctors’ prognosis is that there will be very little recovery of movement.

Your future is completely changed. So are the futures for those near and dear to you, your girlfriend and parents. No immediate likelihood of work for you. Will people want to know you? Where will you live?

How will you cope? How will your friends and relations react?

This happened to Adam, stepson to Maria, who worked with me as Personal Assistant.

What could I say or do? I decided to run the London Marathon in 2003 in order to raise money for Spinal Research; the charity that is giving hope to people like Adam by supporting research into treatments for spinal injury, aimed at restoring sensation and movement. I have been given a place in the race, and they are supporting me, aged 55, in what will be the longest race I have ever run!

Adam is hoping to leave hospital soon to live at home with his dad, Will, and Maria, near Market Rasen. They will have to alter and adapt the house and will be getting full-time live-in care for Adam, in addition to the love and support they are giving him.

By 2005, with help, Adam could take part in clinical trials that could lead to partial repair of his spine. This development would mean that he could perhaps use a knife and fork, open a door, shake someone by the hand - things that we all do every day without even thinking about it. This run and the £1,000 I aim to raise will help Adam a little.

Trees at the Heart of the Village Now that spring is just around the corner and the trees on the Green are beginning to break into leaf again, have you ever wondered just what all the different trees actually are?

Well, here is a key to the variety of trees to be found on the Green - what they are, approximately how old they are, etc.

We are very fortunate in having many mature trees around our village which add greatly to its beauty and attraction.

One particular area of note is Vicar’s Wood adjacent to All Saints parish church, which has recently been the subject of extensive planned management, with the removal of much scrub and undergrowth beneath the tree canopy. Residents who walk through the copse now will see a big difference, with much more daylight and the beautiful gnarled trunks of some of the larger trees, previously hidden by dense undergrowth, now exposed to view from the paths.

There is always something of interest to the naturalist to be found in this peaceful haven in the heart of the village - birds, animals, plants, insects, etc. Take a few minutes to sit quietly on one of the seats in the heart of the copse and look and listen - you may be surprised by what you see and hear!

And the scene changes from month to month as the seasons progress, perhaps the most obvious being the plants - starting with the winter aconites in late January, followed by the snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, ramsons, etc, and of course the wonderful trees coming into leaf overhead.

Raucous rooks nest in the tops of the tallest trees in the spring, whilst below many smaller birds find secluded spots to build their nests and raise their young. You may see a squirrel or two, or even a fox, especially at dusk, when the eerie call of the owls echoes through the trees.

Seventy Years: Finer than Gold aster Sunday will be very special this year for Mr and Mrs Brian and Kathleen Hindley of the Dene, Nettleham. It is to be their Platinum Wedding Anniversary.

Finer than gold, or diamond - 70 years together!

Kathleen’s parents were Nettleham people, but in her childhood she lived with her grandparents in Horncastle. In the early thirties Brian, a keen cyclist, rode over from Ryland, near Welton, and first met Kathleen in a fish and chip shop in Horncastle. Fish was twopence and chips one penny in old money at the time, (which is less than a penny and half a penny in today’s coinage!) Romance blossomed. At 8.00am on the 20th April, 1933, Brian and Kathleen were married in Horncastle Registry Office.

There were no bridesmaids or best man, no family present, just two friends as witnesses. No honeymoon after the wedding either - Brian and Kathleen simply went on to their daily work!

There was just a modest celebration in the evening, when Kathleen avows Brian became a little tipsy, which Brian does not recall!

In early years, Brian worked in the laundry at RAF Scampton and Kathleen was an officer’s batman and later worked in the NAAFI. They lived first in Horncastle for a few months, Scothern, then Dunholme and for forty-five years at Grange de Lings, before moving into Nettleham in 1977. Family life ensued, with eight children - four boys and four girls. Brian the eldest lives with them now, Colin, Dennis, Stephanie (deceased), Terry, Valerie and Elizabeth, all living in the Lincoln area. Then there are seventeen grandchildren and, at the last count, sixteen great grandchildren!

For forty-six years Brian worked for the Hood family on their farm at Grange de Lings, living by the main road which, apart from a few houses and Scampton village, they found to be very isolated. There were only three buses a day into Lincoln. Brian retired twenty-eight years ago when they came to live in Nettleham.

A keen cyclist, Brian was a member of the Scothern Cycling Club and has been a keen gardener. Kathleen used to enjoy needlework

and knitting and now delights in her collection of china figurines.

Seventy years of married life is indeed a rare achievement. Congratulations to you both, Senior Citizens of Nettleham. I’m sure everyone in the village will wish to join me in wishing you a grand time of celebration, with some happy surprises when your great day comes.

Nettleham Historical Society In the 1980s there was a Nettleham Historical Society with Geoff Clarke and Dick Smith as two of the members.

They persuaded those people with early video cameras to record them at various places around the village, talking about the significance of the buildings and places in the history of Nettleham.

Later, they recorded on video many hours of interviews with people who had watched the village develop over past years and the Parish Council provided a grant of £50 to purchase the 8mm (low band) video tapes that were used. Two of the interviewees still live in the village, Mrs Hesketh and Mrs

Newman and one of the last pensioners’ parties, which were an important feature of our village life for many years, was also recorded for posterity.

These 8mm tapes have been copied to normal VHS tapes and other records added of a Remembrance Day service on the Green and the view from two cameras of a Carnival Day, so that anyone can view and enjoy them.

Hopefully these records will be of interest to future generations, but recording stopped in the early 1990s. However, history hasn’t stopped and people are forgetting things from their past every year!

Sadly, Mrs Warwick, who lived in Beckside Cottage for many years, was taken to hospital on the morning of the day when she had agreed to be interviewed and the recording was never made.

30 YEARS OF AGE CONCERN NETTLEHAM

A

ge Concern Nettleham reached a milestone in its history recently by celebrating 30 years of caring for the elderly in our community.

To mark the occasion, a tree planting ceremony was held on the lawn at the front of Church View at 11.30am on Wednesday 27 November 2002. The tree, a flowering cherry (Prunus serrulus) will have masses of beautiful flowers in the spring, bright autumn foliage colour and glistening mahogany-coloured bark in the winter.

The weather had been very unsettled for a few days before and we were really rather concerned, but on the day the sun shone brightly and it couldn’t have been better!

Among the 50 invited guests were many of the original people who had paved the way to our becoming Age Concern, principally among those being our first Chairman, Mrs Olive Pettifer. Sadly no longer living in Nettleham, she was still able to attend and we were delighted to see her again.

increasingly popular afternoon meetings.

This was just what had been needed, colour was being brought into their lives and so it has continued to this day.

Now 30 years on, we continue to hold the Wednesday afternoon meetings in Church View, albeit with some changes, but it is not too different to the early days.

It was wonderful to hear so many of the ‘old timers’ recalling the early days, they marvelled at the changes that had taken place and how, from such small beginnings, Age Concern had grown and was now a household name in the village.

Very soon we will have reached yet another great milestone, with the coming of age of the ‘Mabel Briggs Memorial Luncheon Club’. Yes, incredibly it is 21 years since we served the first lunch, but that is another story!

She told us how, with Eileen Briggs and a few friends, they had visited the residents in Church View and, after having a chat with them over a cup of tea, they very soon realised what sad and lonely lives the residents were leading, in particular those whose families lived far away or were without any family at all.

So after discussing all the possibilities and gathering a team of helpers, a programme was devised which included speakers, entertainment, visits to helpers’ houses for tea, outings for shopping or to beauty spots.

Social Services helped out by supplying a mini-bus for these trips, but we had to supply a driver and very often the team of helpers used their own cars. Gradually more and more of the residents attended the

Mill House: the location of the At the left front corner of the house, you can just see a large piece of sandstone. This is chiselled and drilled and we believe may be some kind of weight once used in the mill.

It was buried in the middle of the drive and my wife was going to include what she thought was a large stone into the rockery. However, as the earth was cleared from around it, she realised just how big it was and, with help from the JCB, it was finally dug out and moved to it’s present position where (yes, you’ve guessed it), it’s staying!

The photograph bottom left shows a second piece of stone, also chiselled and drilled, at the entrance to the garden. This was under a tree and we moved it into the open as far as we could before the clutch nearly burned out on my car so again that’s where it’s staying!

Having read the last edition of Nettleham News, my family were really pleased to see further history about our present home, through the memories and photographs of Mrs Rene Simpson (pages 22/23, winter 2002/3 edition).

We moved into Mill House in April 1995 and, in the process of changing the front garden, cleared away soil and stones (with the help of a JCB and it’s owner) to discover a large stone slab. Our helper with the JCB lifted the stone to find a deep hole underneath - a well. During the excavation we found a lead pipe leading from the well to what we believed would have been the area of the mill, but having seen the photograph with the hand pump, it is now obvious that the pipe was to that.

We arranged for a builder to come and renovate the well and put a safety cage on the top, so that any visitors with children didn’t have any fears of losing them down the well. We didn’t want our cat going down there either (it brings a whole new meaning to ding-dong bell, pussy’s down the well!).

Having completed the renovation to the top of the well, we began to wonder if the main shaft was safe and also wanted to know what was at the bottom. We contacted the Underwater Search Unit of the Lincolnshire Police and asked if they had been training in any deep wells. They hadn’t had an opportunity for a number of years and arranged to come and have a look on one of their training schedules.

In the two photographs on the right, one of the divers can be seen entering the well and slowly climbing down the ladder. The water was about 12 feet deep and the diver spent about an hour under the surface sending up the woodwork which originally surmounted the well. Many buckets of sediment were also sent up and the water level had dropped by a foot by the time they had finished!

In the second photograph in the last edition (with the bakers’ van parked in the yard), the bakery building can be seen directly behind the van. The ovens are still inside the building and, in what I believe may have been the tea-making room, there are some photographs up on the ceiling - girly pictures from the late 50’s (I think late 50’s, I was only an old boy then!). I know it’s sad, but I didn’t have the heart to take them down.

The well mentioned below can be clearly seen in front of the house in the photograph above, and where the lamp-post now stands marks the approximate location of the old hand pump, which appeared in the old photograph in the last winter edition of the magazine.

Journey into Spring The Spring has come, The grass is riz’ I wonder where the birdies is.’

The bird is on the wing.

But that’s absurd The wing is on the bird.

“Laughter,” said Victor Hugo, “is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” So, let’s take a light-hearted journey into Spring.

I must soon make my annual request in one of Lincoln’s two very helpful Tourist Information Centres, where may be obtained free guides to local gardens open to the public throughout Lincolnshire. For a modest charge, usually given to local charities, the majority open on Sunday afternoons. All three: St. John Ambulance, the Red Cross and the overall guide published by the Tourist Board are worth having. All of which brings, to my quirky mind, the amateur Gilbert & Sullivan group who, forgetting their words whilst in full flow in ‘The Mikado’ sang: The flowers that bloom in the Spring Tra la The blooming young flowers in the Spring!

The child went on to ask, “Why does it rain?”

Mother replied, “To make the flowers grow.”

That prompted the child’s further question, “Then why does it rain on the pavements?”

“Questions, questions, I’ve never known such a child for asking so many questions. I wonder what would have happened if I had asked as many questions when I was your age?” Had the child been a little older the reply could have been, “Maybe you would be able to answer more of mine now!”

TAKING WAYS Take a rural ride out of Nettleham, enjoy the undulating Wolds, defying the misconception that Lincolnshire is flat. Encounter some of the genuine county-bred characters. Maybe you’ll come across the farmer standing in the middle of a large field of grass who intrigued a passer-by.

“What are you doing just standing there doing nothing, looking at nothing?” “I’m trying to win a Nobel Prize,” replied the farmer. “How?” “Well,” said the farmer, “I’m told they give the Nobel Prize to people who are outstanding in their field.”

JUST QUACKERS Springtime in Nettleham seems to give added emphasis to the ducks. To walk along beside the Beck often brings to mind Kenneth Graham’s delightful ‘Duck’s Ditty’ in ‘Wind in the Willows’, which begins: All along the backwater, Through the rushes tall, Ducks are a-dabbling, Up tails all!

To which in ‘From Ducks’ F W Harvey adds: But ducks are comical things As comical as you. Quack!

They waddle round, they do . .

So waddle round the village, beside the Beck.

You may hear a visitor ask the oft repeated question, “You’ve got a lot of ducks here. How often do you kill them?” To which question one villager’s stock answer is, “Nobbut once.” It’s as well the ducks don’t wander into Beckside Newsagent. Ducks never pay cash for purchases.

They prefer to say, “Just put it on my bill!”

APRIL SHOWERS Emerging into Spring, hopefully we shall leave behind the excessive rain of this past Winter. A mother asked her young child, “How do you spell ‘Rain’?” “R-A-N-E”, the little one replied, which is the worst spell of rain I’ve known for a long time.’

You might even come across the farmer who surprised his neighbours by replacing an old and battered van with a Rolls Royce. Asked, “How are you liking your new car?” the farmer replied, “Fine.” “It’s full of new gadgets, I suppose.”

“Aye,” the farmer agreed. “Why did you go in for a Roller?” he was asked by the one who could not contain his curiosity any longer. The farmer hesitated before replying “Why now, I’d say its the glass screen between front and rear ... it’s nice being able to drive without the coos lickin’ the back o’ mi neck.”

Or you might meet the slightly simple farm hand who suddenly left his employer. When asked why he had left the farm, he explained at length.

“I’m not staying after what’s happened there. A month or two ago an old cow died an’ we ‘ad nowt but beef to eat for weeks. Then a sheep died an’ we’d nobut to eat but mutton... Now farmer’s wife’s died, so I’m leavin’.”

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST On the day of the local cattle market two farmers strolled into a nearby picture gallery feeling decidedly out of place. They stopped before a picture which seemed to please them.

It was of a lovely girl with a particularly ugly bulldog. “What do you think of that?” one farmer asked the other, “Beauty and the Beast.”

The other, looking closely at the bulldog, said, “Ah,” sighing, “He is a beauty too!”

Then there was the town dweller who strode into the country inn late one evening, having tethered his horse outside. “What a rotten little place to have to end up in to spend the night,” he was heard to mutter as he entered. Then, turning to the landlord who had just come onto the scene, he asked, “Have you accommodation for man and beast?” “Certainly,” said the landlord, “Where is the gentleman?”

BARGAIN BASENESS On your excursions into the countryside, I hope you don’t encounter anyone illegally gathering bluebells, primrose roots, stone slabs, building twigs and more. Just before piling into the car to go, the driver in one such family of vandals asked a farmer, “Can we take this road back to Sheffield?” Eyeing the car and its contents the farmer replied, “Aye, you mum as well, you’ve taken nigh everything else around here.”

The Spring usually heralds a crop of car boot, jumble and new nearly-new sales. Look out for the announcements of these events. For example, “On Saturday week the ladies will be holding a rummage sale - an opportunity in the village to get rid of anything not worth keeping, but too good to be thrown away. Don’t forget to bring your husbands.” Or, “The League of Women have cast off clothing of every kind.

They may be seen in the Village Hall from 7.00 to 9.00pm next Friday evening.

SEASONAL OBSERVANCES Spring brings with it two extreme annual contrasts: All Fools Day on the 1st April and Easter Sunday, this year on the 20th April.

When conducting church worship on All Fools Day some years ago, I began by announcing Hymn number 779. I knew there was no such hymn in the book, number 778 being the last!

Consternation turned to realization by most members of the congregation. Scandalous to have done such?

The Shorter Catechism declares, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him for ever.”

“I have never understood,” wrote the renowned Dean W R Inge of St Paul’s cathedral, “why it should be considered derogatory to the Creator to suppose that He has a sense of humour.” As to Easter Sunday, there were chuckles among the congregation who heard the unfortunately phrased announcement, “To lead our procession of Easter gifts we have asked Mrs B .... to come forward and lay an egg on the altar!”

DANGER DEFEND A NORTHERN GREEN ENVIRONMENTAL RIM If you read our article in the Winter edition of Nettleham News, you will know that we are an association concerned with unsuitable developments within the parishes of Burton, the Carltons, North Greetwell and Nettleham and blots on the landscape of the adjoining countryside.

The most recent matter affecting Nettleham was the proposal by a commercial developer to erect a large dome at Mulsanne Park for indoor tennis. Our Chairman spoke at the Parish Council meeting of the 12th December 2002, where it was decided NOT to go ahead with this particular proposal. The reasons for not doing so were the complex difficulties arising from planning limitations on the expansion of the existing Mulsanne Park operations and the lack of any Parish Council control on the way the business would be run. If it had gone ahead it would have been one of the largest buildings in the village.

The Parish Council has agreed to sell to DANGER a copy of the Deeds for the sportsfield at Mulsanne Park for £25, in order that we can see for ourselves what covenants may have been imposed by the Church Commissioners when the land was sold to the Parish Council.

We already have confirmation that the families of Nettleham do NOT have to be members of any of the clubs at Mulsanne Park to use the facilities there. We would of course encourage those interested in using the football pitches, etc, to make arrangements through the Sportsfield Manager.

We have written confirmation from the Church Commissioners that there are no current plans to sell the field adjacent to Mulsanne Park that the Parish council wish to use for expansion of football and cricket. Nevertheless, there is light at the end of the tunnel in that our own independent enquiries have revealed that the Police Authority sportsfield is available for purchase as it stands, complete with football, rugby, cricket and tennis facilities.

At the end of this football season, the sportsfield will no longer be available to “non police” teams as the Authority says it is spending twice as much on repairs and upkeep as it is receiving in fees, and it cannot afford to continue bearing this cost in the future.

The purchase/lease of the Police Authority sportsfield would be a simply splendid opportunity for the sporting families of Nettleham to use expanded facilities that

are WITHIN the perimeter of the village and which require no start up or development costs. There is easy access from the A46 that will not disturb local householders and also ready-made car parking facilities.

We are certain that the cost would, in the long term, be cheaper than developing on land that is agricultural and not currently available. We have asked the Parish Council to seriously consider this option.

The proposed planning application for permission to put caravans on a field adjacent to the Brown Cow public house has also been of considerable interest to us. DANGER and others have vigorously opposed the application and made their views known to WLDC, from whom a decision is still awaited.

The Brown Cow has been granted a temporary entertainments license with stringent conditions to prevent any noise from disturbing local residents.

AGAST ACTION GROUP AGAINST STAR’S TURBINES

SAY NO TO STAR ENERGY SPIN! Nearly 200 interested people packed into Welton village Hall, on 20 January 2003, to register their concern about Star Energy’s proposals to erect eleven 100 metre high (over 300ft) wind turbines close to local villages.

Whilst we acknowledge that ‘green’ energy is desirable, this proposal comes with a cost... and that cost might be high to the residents of Nettleham and the surrounding villages.

The question should also be asked, just who stands to benefit from the erection of these proposed wind turbines?

Did you know.... ● At 100m high, these structures are vast higher even than Lincoln Cathedral! ● That ice can form on the turbine blades during cold spells, and as it warms up - this can be projected hundreds of metres. ● That the turning turbines can interfere with radar and could cause problems for aircraft.

In the same vein, the turbines may interfere with television reception. ● That the wind turbines make a significant noise as they rotate in the wind.

Nettleham British Legion Poppy Appeal 2002 Although our total for 2002 was slightly less than the previous year, nevertheless a considerable sum was again raised by the people of the village.

I cannot speak too highly of the efforts made by everyone concerned that once again gave us a very successful year. Our house-to-house collectors were magnificent as usual, whilst local business once again did us proud.

The figure of £1,686.26p was £53 less than 2001, but remains a magnificent effort. The commencing date of our campaign did coincide with the beginning of the schools half term, therefore two schools and a pre-school playgroup meant a three-week loss of collecting time, a period that may well account for this year’s figure being down.

We did, however, do very well once again.

Our house-to-house collectors did a superb job to produce the terrific sum of £874.06p, every year they come up with the goods!

Local business and commercial outlets never let us down and this year was no exception. The tins on their counters bulged to the tune of £785.08p - another great effort. Additionally the sum of £27.12p was collected from the church service.

On a less positive side, there are still parts of Nettleham that we are unable to cover due entirely to a lack of people, which is an ongoing problem. We need more help in every area of our work, but especially for house-to-house collections. Young people would be most welcome.

Speaking to people in the village leaves little doubt in my mind that the Poppy Appeal means a great deal to them perhaps, however, to the older element rather than the younger. It would appear that young people perhaps do not fully understand the meaning or significance of the occasion, which is a little sad. I do understand that moves are afoot to improve this situation via the schools.

Profile on a Man of Quality “Since Peter’s move from Nettleham was announced, the word ‘outstanding’ has been on my lips. It’s something everybody seems to recognise in him. It’s a little more difficult to pin down precisely, but I think it all revolves on his irrepressible enthusiasm for the development and growth of all those with whom he is involved.

Peter Staves, head teacher of All Saints’ Church of England Junior School, Nettleham, has left. He has been appointed ‘Director of Education for the Lincolnshire Diocese’ by the Diocesan Board of Education. He took up his new appointment on the 3rd February.

Lincolnshire born, for his first eighteen years Peter Staves lived in Market Rasen. He attended the Church of England Junior School there and later what was then the De Aston All Boys School. He was also a choirboy in St Thomas’ Parish Church.

His teaching career began with five years in St Peter’s Church of Wales School in Blaenavon, from where he moved back to Lincolnshire - at Mablethorpe County Primary School for five years. He was then appointed deputy head teacher to Isaac Newton Grammar School, Grantham. For his second year there, he became acting head teacher, before being appointed head teacher at the Primary School in Toynton All Saints.

There he remained for seven years before coming to Nettleham in 1991.

Peter is essentially a family man. He and his wife Jayne have an adult son Andrew, a daughter Sara and grandson Dylan. Both husband and wife enjoy ornamental work in their sizeable garden. Asked about other hobbies and interests, Peter’s immediate answer was, “Music of all kinds, listening, playing - the guitar and recently the piano and performing.” Poetry, reading, (especially American West novels) and writing. Peter is also keen on sport, cricket, football, tennis, but especially now, golf.

A PAEON O F P R A I S E From ‘a parent’s point of view’ and the Chair of the School Finance and General Purposes Committee SIMON HARDY has written: “Peter was consistently accessible and approachable. He always made time for us and we got the feeling that the issue we were raising was the most important item on his agenda at the time. Not only so, but that he would work with us to resolve any issue we brought to him. He has a terrific knack of knowing all the children’s names, not just ours.

He has a wonderful sense of humour and has always been of great value at out-of-school activities, such as quiz nights and musical evenings. We have often laughed until we cried at his renditions of Jake Thackary songs and will never forget some of his animated poetry reading. We could not have wished for a richer primary educational experience for our daughters than that provided by Peter and his staff.”

Former governor JOHN HILL and, at that time, Chairman of the School General Purposes Committee, was on the interviewing panel that selected Peter. John Hill writes: “He stood out as a superb candidate and when he accepted the job there was a unanimous

Anyone who has had the experience of having their children pass through the school will know that Peter’s leadership, combined with the undoubted talents of all the staff at the school, has resulted in one of the best junior schools in Lincolnshire.

A senior Offsted inspector once asked me how I would describe the school. My reply was, ‘It cares’. I am pleased for Peter that he has the opportunity to move on and I have no doubt that all of the schools now coming under his care will get enormous benefit from his appointment.”

Another former governor, JOHN MAJOR, has written: “When I think of Peter’s contribution to Nettleham Junior School, two words come to mind, enthusiasm and involvement.

Enthusiasm, not only his own, but that which he instilled in children, teachers, parents and governors. I shall never forget his enthusiasm at school assemblies, particularly for special events.

Involvement, not only his own in all aspects of school life, but also encouraging others to be involved. At school assembly he tried to involve as many children as possible in some way or other, either in partaking or maybe just wanting to put their hand up to answer the questions. As a school governor, I was conscious that he encouraged governors to be involved in the life of the school, not just sit back and listen to what he and the teachers were doing and the challenges that they faced.

I thank Peter for all that he has done for the school and congratulate him on his achievement.”

This paeon of praise to which so many would have liked to contribute, is rounded off by GORDON SLEIGHT, Vicar of Nettleham and Chairman of Governors: 51

Undoubtedly, Peter’s strengths, appreciated by so many in Nettleham and beyond, are his close one-to-one relationships with each child, their parents and the teachers. His attractive character, enthusiasm, warmth of personality and sense of humour explain his success.

PROSPECT AND RETROSPECT These are all characteristics which, it is hoped, Peter Staves will be able to carry over into all areas of his new work. He is aware of the dangers of becoming bogged down in committees; the lack of continuity with new projects and responsibilities in each local situation within a large diocese; and the perils of becoming a denominational gadfly! He expresses a hope to be able to continue to get into classrooms among children and teachers.

Peter Staves has said of the step he has taken, “I know that leaving Nettleham will be the biggest wrench of my life. Throughout my time here there hasn’t been a single day when, during the drive into the village each morning, I have not looked forward to another day’s work in this school.”

FAREWELLS Leave taking took place at the school on Friday 31st January at assembly. Then the children bade farewell to their popular head teacher, presenting him with a pianoforte. On Saturday 1st February Peter Stave’s family, governors, past and present staff and members of the parents/teachers association all gathered for ‘Peter’s Party’. The event was arranged by Joan Huckle, Sue Ingleson and their large team of helpers. After speeches of appreciation and enjoyment from the lavish spread of refreshments, the party ended with music provided by Peter on his guitar, joined by other friends.

On behalf of many pupils, parents, teachers past and present - and Nettleham villagers, Peter, we wish you continued joy and success in your new sphere of vocation and much happiness with Jayne and your family for many more years to come.

The Village Pre-School Varied Activities at Nettleham Pre-School The last two weeks leading up to half term have been very exciting. The theme was ‘People Who Help Us’ and we had visits from a policeman and a lollipop lady. This has enabled the children to have the opportunity to discover and learn about this through general play. An excellent subject and a big thank you to our visitors who gave up their time.

Looking forward to the end of March, the Playgroup will be having a Sponsored Nursery Rhyme Week. The children will have the chance to dress up as their favourite character and sing as many Nursery Rhymes as they can each day. All the proceeds will go towards new play equipment and family and friends will be welcome to come along and watch.

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who supported and attended our Annual Christmas Fair, held in the Village Hall on Saturday, 30th November. A magnificent total of over £350 was raised in just two hours, which has enabled the Playgroup to upgrade the computer, as well as replacing some books and other learning materials.

The last week of term, brought the eagerly anticipated and thoroughly enjoyable Nativity Play. All the children looked delightful in their costumes and much effort had clearly gone into their design. Friends and family were all treated to a perfect performance!

The New Term welcomed lots of new children, who quickly joined in all the activities. We started the term off with a weather theme. The children have had fun and learnt all about snow, wind, rain and sunshine and have made articles including bird-food hangers, weather plates and washing line pictures. (The weather itself also kindly helped out with our theme, by providing snow blizzards, torrential rain and wind)!

Chinese New Year was celebrated at the playgroup. The children took part in dragon dancing and created lanterns and egg box dragons.

Once again the children have all benefited from a varied, enjoyable and educational term. Nettleham Pre-School Playgroup plays a very important role in helping children to learn and develop, through interactive play and independent learning.

Groups at Work and Play Winter Wonders at Beckside Pre-School Christmas was on everyone’s mind for weeks, but it came and went in next to no time at all. Christmas means different things to different people. Since the end of September the shops were full of things with signs which told us ‘now is the time to buy, buy, buy’, encouraging us all to spend, spend, spend! But I think everyone who was in church on 16th December saw the real meaning of Christmas.

The church was full to over flowing as the children of Beckside Pre-School acted out the story of the first Christmas. There were tears all round as the children said their lines and sang their songs about how baby Jesus was born on that very cold and magical night over 2000 years ago. Each child looked absolutely beautiful, dressed up in white net, wings, tea towels and dressing gowns, from Thomas the Innkeeper in his apron and lantern, to Amber the angel in her pink high-heeled play shoes that she just had to wear.

What confidence the children had to remember their part. It is one thing to go over to church to practice when it is empty, but quite a different matter when the church is so full (down at the children’s eye level just a sea of legs and faces). Although we had been practicing for some weeks,

After the magic came what we had all been waiting for, the good old-fashioned Punch and Judy show, with baby, the policeman and yes, the crocodile with his sausages!

The children jumped up and down, shouted and booed until they had no voices left.

Things calmed down for the arrival of Father Christmas, all the children sat and looked in wonder at him, wanting to show him how good they were, bearing in mind Christmas Eve was just two days away.

Spring term started with lots of things to do with weather. The children carried out a weather watch, we looked at and measured big puddles in the car park, and made weather charts. We predicted that it would snow in the last week in February, and guess what? It did! We took the children out to look at and play in the snow.

Each and every child was brilliant. When it was my turn to thank everyone, there was a lump in my throat, I was so very proud of them all and felt privileged to share the wonder of Christmas with them. We were able to give Gordon Sleight £52 to give to the children’s Charity on behalf of children, parents and staff.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it is a real privilege to work with little children and share in all these experiences. Just to watch their faces as they looked in wonder as the snow floated down, it was just so magical! Perhaps next year we should predict snow for Christmas!! Now that would be wonderful.

There’s been a lot in the press recently about Fairtrade, and many people are well informed on the subject. We thought people in the village might like to know about the co-operation between Nettleham Methodist Church and All Saints to become Fair Traders with Traidcraft.

LADY’S STORY If you live around the top (Sudbrooke) end of the village, you will have most probably seen me walking my 11 year old retired greyhound.

Lady, as I renamed her, came into my life in January 2000. I just happened to hear an appeal on local radio that homes were needed urgently for two greyhounds.

I phoned in and after a home check by the Retired Greyhound Trust, “Quigley’s Cora” (as Lady was then called), arrived.

This sad, frightened and very thin dog, with sores and a hairless tail, responded immediately to a warm home, regular food and walks - and a proud, loving owner.

Although she had lived all her life in kennels she seemed to know she should do her “duties” outside. I’ve never once had a mess. She also had to get used to all home noises such as the vacuum cleaner, washing machine, television, etc. She is now a happy, outgoing and friendly dog, enjoying her retirement and living life as a “Lady”.

This is all a far cry from her previous life.

Lady was born in Ireland, as 95% of greyhounds are. As far as we know, she then raced in England. Greyhounds can sprint up to 45mph, but they are not long-distance runners. Once their owners have had the best out of them, they are sold en bloc to Spanish racetrack owners.

Between races they are kept in cages only one metre square. They are doped and raced every day, even when they are injured. In 1999 Lady was found abandoned and emaciated in a cage in a Barcelona stadium when it was closed down.

She was rescued along with a batch of twenty others by a lady from Surrey, Mrs Ann Finch, an author and animal rescuer who works for Greyhounds In Need.

This organisation has rescued over a thousand dogs from Spain during the last two years. Unwanted racing dogs in Spain face appalling deaths, and the conditions in even the most modern of racetracks are horrendous.

Lady then lived for six long months in quarantine, before finally coming to a dog sanctuary near Brigg and into the care of the Lincoln Branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust. She is one of the fortunate few who are rescued and re-homed. Hundreds die agonising deaths.

Lady now has a glossy coat, and hair has

grown back again over her sores and her tail. She now wags this vigorously when greeting her “fans” which include the children and neighbours in my area.

Greyhounds are the most abused breed of dog. As soon as they no longer earn money for their owners they are literally thrown out and abandoned. Yet they are the most gentle, loving, laid-back dogs that anyone can own, and contrary to popular myth do not need lots of exercise. They are very lazy and sleep happily nearly all day 45mph couch potatoes!!

PAIN

A NETTLEHAM MEADOW Golden shafts of sunlight Signal the promise of a bright new day, As silken flowers dance To the music of the elements.

Flame-yellow kingcups and buttercups Sway joyfully in the caressing wind, Whilst dainty cowslips shake tiny bunches of keys, To release fragrance into the air.

When at the dentists terrified I hid behind my mother’s skirt, He smiled and soothed away my fears And said “It isn’t going to hurt” - IT DID! Ours was a casual affair I always knew you were a flirt And when I saw the end was near

Snowdrops hang their heads, But reveal shades of green and gold, As they move rhythmically, Like white pearls, festooned on a necklace.

I was purchased at a Draper’s, close by St Paul’s Churchyard, There were 12 of us in family, all pinned upon a card A pretty Flapper chose me, she’d had a slight mishap With a certain dainty garment, a broken shoulder-strap!

And so I started my career, so meek and so demure And yet full of Tenacity, think what I held secure!

I fear she was a lazy girl and didn’t care for sewing I lived with her for ages without anybody knowing.

I’ve helped both men and women, when invited out to sup Sometimes holding something down, or holding something up.

They frequently impose on me, still I don’t complain Though I very often wonder how the deuce I bear the strain!

Silent growth and urgent activity Are all around, as fresh life pulses; Nurtured by the seductive caresses And growing ardour of returning warmth.

Frail snowdrops push through the moist earth, Whilst violets nestle in the undergrowth.

Small shoots of yellow buds come to maturity, In the form of dainty flowerets.

A Barrister once used me for some papers in a sheaf Quite out of place, he lost the case, so my stay with him was brief His typist found me useful once, her name was Kitty Carter She was running to the station, and she nearly lost her ..... train!

As the sunlight Chases shadows, I watch the blue of the sky, Melt into the blue of Nature’s carpet.

I am surrounded By a land, Where light and life Meet, in a Harmonious unity Of exquisiteness And unreality.

I’m humble, shy and modest - in use I’m seldom seen But I’ve never let you down girls, wherever trouble’s been Buttons may drop off and elastic, too, may snap, Hooks and eyes are hardly wise, they always show a gap!

Nettleham CE Aided Junior School A selection of items contributed by pupils, including two tributes to Peter Staves, Head Teacher, on his recent departure from the school (see also page 51) The children have been working on Diary extracts; one of their favourites was ‘The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole’. They had a go at imitating its humorous style.

My Diary This diary is all about my life, me. Me, me, me, I feel like one little, tiny, useless ant in a colony of millions and millions of huge strong ants that will kill people with a bite, whereas I would get stood on and no-one would notice.

My life has definitely changed since I’ve been in Year 6, it’s all about money now and my poor parents have had to pay lots of money for things for me, you know.

Anyway, school isn’t easy any more, it seems I’ve been walking all my life and now I have to run faster than a cheetah because all the work has got 100% harder, also all the teachers rely on us to set a really good example.

Rumour goes that residents of the village want to say bye-bye to the ducks, but I think ducks make Nettleham Nettleham, because one of my best friends has renamed the Beck, Ducksville, because of all the ducks.

Oh, and speaking of ducks I remember when we just started Year 6 (and Year 7 in Fay’s case!) me, Laura, Niki and Fay rescued a duckling with a broken leg, we named it Stinky and took it to a rescue centre and that is what made us love birds so much.

I knew instantly that something was wrong when the teachers were called into the staff room, then came the bad news, Mr Staves was leaving because he had a new job!

I was happy for him, but also I was sad to see him go, because he had welcomed me into the school and helped me through the school years, also he has made me happy to know I have had such a kind, generous man for a head teacher. I will never forget him.

Ever!

The Headmaster Mr Staves is so cool, He is headmaster of our school, I will miss him when he goes, Right from my head down to my toes, He is going to change his job, When he does I will probably sob, No-one can replace him, Without him the future is grim.

There is no-one like Mr Staves, Not even when we lived in caves, There will never be another, He is so like a big brother, Oh, Lord please keep this fellow, Young, strong, happy and mellow.

Nettleham Nettleham is a beautiful place Where the ducks in the Beck swim with grace.

There are parks and schools for your children to play, So you won’t have to keep them in all day.

There is a library here with books to read, Take as many as you need.

The Newsagents have lots of sweets for your tum, So get some money from your mum.

There is a church with reverend Sleight, And a police station in case there is a fight.

The pub is open most of the night, And the opticians are where you can gain your sight.

The garage is here in case you break down, (It’s better than the ones at town..)

There’s a graveyard to bury your dead, And a Fish & Chip shop to see that you’re nicely fed.

ICE RINK Year Six pupils in Nettleham Junior School have been discussing whether there should be an ice-rink in Lincoln. Here are some of the arguments about the subject.

There would be room for it on the new development, just off Nettleham Road, opposite the traffic lights. However, it would bring more people and that would mean more traffic on the ring road, which already gets very busy.

Some people have to drive to Doncaster just to skate for about one and a half hours and then have to drive back, although people don’t go ice-skating that often and it would mainly just be people from other towns coming.

It would give some people the chance to do something they’ve never done before, on the other hand it would take up room that could be used for houses.

It would give children things to do in the school holiday instead of sitting at home all day, however, it may be dangerous as children could fall over and get injured and their parents wouldn’t know.

So what do you think? Should there be an ice-rink in Lincoln? It’s a hard choice as there are good points and bad points, but you choose.

Furthermore it could bring the possibility of Lincoln having an ice-hockey team. Ice hockey is a great spectator sport, really fast and furious. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages. This might encourage children to take up the sport themselves, this would help to keep the children fit and healthy in a time when everyone moans that children are not active enough.

William Farr Church of England Comprehensive School

Friends of William Farr School Re-formed The Friends of William Farr Church of England School has recently been re-formed. The object of the Friends is to support the school’s activities and raise funds to be used for the school.

Requests for expenditure items are received through the School Council and the committee will be looking for requests for equipment, etc, which are outside normal school expenditure.

We are also raising money towards the Lawres room, a quiet room which it is hoped will be built during 2003. This will be a multi-faith building, which pupils can use for quiet contemplation.

NETTLEHAM LADIES CLUB This year our Spring Fayre is on Saturday 10th May in the Village Hall at 2.30 pm.

The proceeds are in aid of the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. We are having all the usual stalls including cakes, flowers, bric a brac, nearly new, tombola, etc, plus a few extras specially for the children, including Hook a Duck and Candy Floss. We hope this event will be well supported to help keep this essential service flying.

The Club has been running for 40 years and we now have 84 members. We are always pleased to welcome new members and visitors to our monthly meetings on the last Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. We have eight speakers each year, two theatre visits, a summer meal and outings to places of interest. The annual subscription is only £7.00.

The speaker on the 25th March is Mr Bullock, who is giving a very humorous talk entitled ‘Tales from the Dales’. I am sure everyone will enjoy this talk and I hope many more ladies will join us at Nettleham Ladies Club.

Arts & Crafts for Children Did you know there is a thriving Arts & Crafts Workshop for children in Nettleham?

Currently with around 14 members aged from 7-11, the group meets every Tuesday evening from 6.15pm - 7.45pm in the Old School.

The children are given the opportunity to try their hand at a wide variety of media including watercolour and acrylic painting, together with craft work including claywork, jewellery, decorative ornaments, chalkboards, card and papier maché work, murals, glass painting, and much, much more besides.

In addition to the weekly workshops, several holiday workshops have taken place during Summer, Easter and Christmas - these sessions enabling the children to develop their creative talents and at the same time affording parents some much-needed space and time!

An exhibition of the children’s inspirational work is to take place in Nettleham in early August, so keep an eye out for the posters around the village!

Cherry Willingham Community School Cherry Willingham Sports College Staff and pupils at Cherry Willingham Community School were delighted to learn on 10 February that the school has been awarded Specialist Sports College status by the Department for Education and Skills.

David Mills, headteacher, expressed his delight at the news: “This is a very welcome endorsement by the DfES of the overall performance of the school and its plans for future development, in all departments, not only Sports and Physical Education. We shall be working closely with other schools, Including Nettleham CE Junior School, with sports clubs and developing our sport and fitness links with the community.”

News of the achievement of specialist sports college status comes hard on the heels of another accolade for the school: the latest ‘league tables’, published by the government, which for the first time show schools’ public examination results in terms of ‘value added’, reveal that Cherry Willingham Community School is in the top twenty-five per cent of schools in the country.

In the mean time, the school’s sporting prowess continues. In basketball, both the under-sixteen and the under-fifteen girls’ teams are East Midlands champions and the under-fourteen boys’ team narrowly lost in the East Midlands final.

Even a member of staff is bringing glory to the school. Jim Gillespie, Head of PE, who coached the successful basketball teams, recently took part in the Irish Indoor Athletics Championships. He ran in the 400 metres, an event which is not his own, and managed to achieve fifth place.

NETTLEHAM TRAFFIC As you will have noticed on the Parish Council Page (9), the long-awaited report on the traffic situation in the village has finally been published.

It would seem that not much at all is going to come out of all the deliberations and consultations. In raising this subject some two years ago now, it was my intention to draw attention to a deteriorating situation, which will continue to worsen as time passes by and more and more cars come onto our roads in the years to come.

The general opinion is that we do not have a problem, at least in comparison to other villages up and down the country, and that to do nothing is perhaps the best course of action. This, to some, may be acceptable (just) at the present time, but what about ten, twenty, thirty years down the line shouldn’t we be planning ahead and seeking to prevent future problems arising, rather than sitting on our hands and waiting until they are already upon us and it’s too late?

The short written report was accompanied by a series of computer-generated diagrams illustrating the track taken by large articulated vehicles in negotiating certain corners in the centre of the village. Not surprisingly, they all showed that the rear wheels of the vehicle would cut across a normal roundabout, and consequently the suggestion of introducing these as a means of reducing traffic speed was summarily dismissed.

However, a roundabout, in the accepted sense, as a large, raised, circular obstruction in the road, was definitely NOT what was being proposed - but mini-roundabouts which (to my understanding) consist of perhaps 2mm of white paint on the road surface - presenting no obstruction at all to the passage of vehicle wheels across it. The Highway Code informs us that mini-roundabouts should be treated in the same way as conventional roundabouts, ie give way to traffic coming from the right or which is already on the roundabout, but ‘watch out for long vehicles which may have to cross the centre’.

I think we all accept that large articulated vehicles may, from time to time, need to come into the village centre to deliver to local businesses, but does this warrant a traffic strategy based on the requirements of these monsters?

The precise point of suggesting mini-roundabouts as a means of reducing traffic speed at certain road junctions is certainly not to simply introduce a physical obstruction to traffic flow, but rather to effectively change what are now imbalanced, priority-assumption junctions into equal priority junctions, by means of a little white paint!

Personally speaking, as a motorist of many years, I would always be inclined to approach a mini-roundabout (where three or more roads have EQUAL priority) with considerably more caution (and hence less speed) than a T-junction, where the road upon which I was travelling was assumed to have priority.

This would be particularly appropriate as you approach the village down Greetwell Lane, where, as you reach the junction with High Street, there is a blind bend to the left with vehicles approaching (frequently at speed) from the Washdyke Lane direction.

The introduction of a mini-roundabout at this location would ensure that both local and visiting drivers, warned by appropriate road signs, would approach this junction with additional caution, in anticipation of perhaps needing to give way to a vehicle which had already emerged, turning right from the bottom of Greetwell Lane onto the mini-roundabout towards the village centre.

There are blind bends at every single one of the locations which I put forward as possible locations for mini-roundabouts.

Ask yourself these questions: When emerging from the right-hand fork of The Crescent onto East Street, wouldn’t you feel safer and more confident knowing that a vehicle, perhaps a bus, approaching unseen along East Street from the direction of the Green, would be slowing down in case a vehicle (you!) was already on the mini-roundabout just around the corner?

Similarly (as mentioned previously), when approaching the bottom end of Greetwell Lane, wouldn’t you feel more secure in the knowledge that the vehicle approaching from the Washdyke Lane direction was, like you, slowing down in anticipation of possibly having to give way at the junction ahead?

And finally, when you are negotiating the tricky up-hill emergence from the top of 62

Vicarage Lane, wouldn’t you welcome a slower approach by vehicles coming up Mill Hill, despite their still having priority?

I also feel that drivers who now park inconsiderately on or near the junctions mentioned (despite common sense telling you that this is dangerous) would be less inclined to do so on a mini-roundabout.

Fortune has been kind to Nettleham so far the number of accidents have been very few and personally I would like to keep it that way. I suppose, in the final analysis, it’s all down to courtesy and consideration for other road users and, I am very pleased to say, we seem to have these qualities in abundance in the village - being generally respectful, courteous and well-mannered in our everyday driving habits.

It is to be hoped that as the older generation is replaced with younger drivers this desirable situation will continue. But sadly, selfishness (disguised as assertiveness), aggressiveness (disguised as ‘attitude’), arrogance (disguised as ‘street cred’) and **** you Jack, I’m all right (disguised as ‘being in control’) are now frequently peddled as virtues in the media and could easily be applied to driving behaviour.

Also, it should be remembered that not all vehicles passing through Nettleham are local drivers, and may not share the same respect as local people do for their fellow motorists. At Lincolnshire Show time in the summer, for instance, the volume of traffic passing through the village is noticably greater - yes it’s only for a few days, but other events in the region throughout the year also attract many other visiting motorists.

Of course, it’s all down to money as well.

The government is unlikely to perceive a small village in Lincolnshire as a prime candidate for funding improvements.

Anyway, I will say no more on the subject for the time being. Perhaps you have some observations or comments of your own which you would like to air through the pages of the magazine? If so, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Do keep up the good driving and don’t forget to be considerate, thoughtful and aware of others when it comes to parking your vehicle too!

Nettleham Bowls Club A short history of this long-established and popular village club Bowls was first played in Nettleham in 1935 on two rinks behind Larder’s grocery shop, now the Co-op car park. The present club was formed on the 3rd February 1937, when the annual subscription was set at 5/-.

In 1980 further building took place with a purpose-built new brick machinery store being completed, the design of which gave the capability of including a bar area, this being completed in 1984.

In October 1937, the Club moved to its present location on Sudbrooke Lane, after agreeing to rent the land from Mrs S A Jubb for £5 per annum. Part of the field was sub-let to the Tennis Club at £1/15s/0d per annum. At this time, only two rinks were available and the green was cut with a hand mower - it was not until 1946 that funds were found for a motor mower. In 1951 the green was doubled in size to four rinks, with most of the work being done by Mr Pickwell the local farmer.

The Club relied on the knowledge and generosity of its members to expand its facilities, but none more so than Stan Smith and John Lill. After twenty-seven years’ use, the prefab pavilion was beginning to disintegrate and it was decided to build the present brick pavilion. Stan Smith prepared the plans and guided the club through all the building regulations, whilst John Lill did the brickwork. Of course, many other members were also involved.

A major crisis arose in September 1954 when Mrs Jubb died and the land had to be sold, but Mr Pickwell and Mr Newlove came to the rescue by buying the land, selling some off as a building plot, thus leaving the Bowls and Tennis Clubs to pay £150.00 each for their playing areas and the access road. The Tennis Club eventually moved to Bill Bailey’s Playing Field, leaving the Bowls Club as sole owners of the Sudbrooke Lane site.

Until 1961 the only pavilion was an old railway carriage, but no record of how this was acquired is in existence. In 1969, a wartime prefab was purchased to be used as a pavilion and new toilets with a septic tank were built. The previous gents toilet consisted of a small wooden shed with a bucket inside! No provision appears to have been made for the ladies. At this time the Club started to play in local leagues instead of just friendly matches.

By 1973, the green was becoming inadequate and it was decided to lay a new six-rink green to English Bowling Association standards. This was completed in 1974, at a cost of £2,078.00, the work being carried out by Mr W Hammond, a local playing field contractor. The first wood was bowled by the present Chairman Alf Frith, who was at that time Chairman of Nettleham Parish Council.

The new pavilion was opened on the 7th June 1990 by Stan’s wife Margaret. Len Charity was a great fund-raiser for the club spending many hours collecting waste paper - this generating several thousand pounds worth of income. The roadway down to the club has been named Len Charity Drive in his honour.

The Nettleham Bowls Club has around fifty-five members and they play in six leagues around Lincoln, also extending out to Sleaford, Grantham, Long Bennington and Market Rasen. The season commences in the last week of April and finishes in mid September.

New members are always very welcome at our friendly club. Please come down to the green on a balmy May evening and see what goes on - someone may even buy you a pint!

We are holding a special Open Day on Sunday 11 May at 2.30pm. Do come along in flat shoes and have a go, you may get hooked! New members are always very welcome to ensure that the sixty-six years of continuous bowls in Nettleham is extended into the future.

Link Romania Information and Video Evening Thank you all for your support of the Information & Video Evening held at Church View on 30th January, which raised £71.30. Further donations meant that Margaret and John had been given £100.00 before they left the village and a further £7.00 has been forwarded to their home address for their Skills Centre.

I am so sorry that the weather prevented so many of you coming. It was really great to see the video of the shoeboxes being delivered and to see the joy they obviously bring to so many families.

Margaret and John have worked in Romania for the last two years. They now plan to build a Skills Centre, as their classroom is much too small. They have been given a plot of land by a charity in the Isle of Wight and now have all the necessary planning permission to start building once the ground has thawed.

The Skills Centre will consist of two classrooms, a kitchen, toilets, and showers, as well as office accommodation. They only have ONE cold water tap in the present building! Their dream is to build the first storey this year and put the roof on by September, then in 2004 take the roof off and build the second storey and finally replace the roof! We have made a start by supporting them with £107.00, but, of course, we’re sure there is more we can do by way of coffee mornings, etc, so please look out for posters giving details.

On Friday, 31st January, Margaret and John went into Radio Lincs and recorded an interview which was broadcast the following Thursday at 2.00pm. We have made copies of that recording, so if anyone would like to borrow a tape, please feel free to contact any of us.

Your Garden in Spring

by Richard Whatling, Nettleham Gardeners Association Committee Member With the evenings drawing out and the weather gradually improving, maintaining your garden is going to be a much more enjoyable task than during the past few months.

Many plants that have been dormant during the winter will be coming into life, native birds and mammals will be foraging for food and seeking nesting sites and our gardens can often provide a safe haven for these creatures.

Lawns One of your biggest assets may be your lawn and this is one area in the garden that is frequently the subject of continual abuse, with many feet walking over the surface and compacting the soil beneath. If your lawn is looking rather tired, it can usually be revitalized, providing it is not entirely covered in moss. Applying a combined weed, feed (and moss-killer if required) to a lawn will add nutrients to aid the growth of the grass, assist the development of the root system and kill weeds competing for space.

Moss can be more of a problem than weeds, sometimes almost completely smothering the grass. The application of a moss-killer will kill it within a couple of weeks and, once dead, it can be raked out to allow the grass to regrow again. However, one of the main causes of excessive moss growth compacted soil, should be attended to, otherwise the same problem will return once again. Aeration of the surface achieves a number of benefits - including the introduction of air into the ground to strengthen the root system and at the same time improving drainage. Do this by going over the lawn with a garden fork to a depth of around 3-6 inches, rocking the fork back and forth gently as you progress.

Flower Beds & Borders A well-planned flower bed or border should look good all year round. Quite often, there will be a season, especially winter, when flowers are absent, resulting in a dull, monotonous and lifeless appearance. A varied selection of evergreen shrubs can help to avoid this, adding interest all year round - even on the dullest of days.

Try planting taller plants towards the back of the border to add height, decreasing the size of the plants progressively as they get nearer to the front. A mixed border of

Regular outings to well-known gardens and other places of interest to gardeners are also organised throughout the year.

There is an annual flower and vegetable show - a very popular event in the village calendar.

The association has its own store with a wide range of gardening products at special prices and a discounted commercial seed catalogue in winter Annual membership fees are very modest: Double £3.75 (Senior £1.20) and single £2.25 (Senior £0.75).

Just come to any meeting to join! shrubs and perennials will result in an even more interesting appearance, again with the taller plants at the back and the smaller ones at the front.

Quite naturally, when you go into a garden centre or nursery in spring and summer, you’ll be tempted to purchase only plants that are in flower and disregard those that don’t look appealing. Instead, endeavour to purchase plants throughout the year, seeing them in bloom, even in the middle of winter - you may be surprised at the number of shrubs and perennials which flower at this time of year.

To keep your plants in tip-top condition, applying a general purpose fertilizer around the base of each plant will help them through the growing season. Weeds, which compete for nutrients, moisture and light should be regularly removed before they cause any damage. Hoe through annual weeds and dig out any perennial weeds, complete with their roots, to prevent them re-growing.

Alternatively, applying a translocating weedkiller will kill these tougher perennial weeds - although some of the persistent kinds may need several applications.

Vegetables Decide which vegetables you’d like to grow and plan where they will be planted.

To avoid pests and diseases building up and damaging your crop, develop a rotation system, whereby every year each variety is grown on a different area.

Prepare the area well by digging over the soil thoroughly (if this wasn’t done during 64

the autumn and winter) leaving the large clods of earth to be broken down by late frosts and then raking to a good tilth.

Once into April, many crops can safely be sown outside, eg carrots, lettuce, broad beans, beetroot, etc. During March and April dig out a trench for runner beans and add nutrient-rich materials including kitchen vegetable scraps, compost and manure. When the bean plants are planted out later, they’ll get off to a good start, with all the nitrogen already in the ground. Seed potatoes, too, can be planted out in April and May, when risk of a hard, penetrating frost is much reduced.

Why not try growing a more unusual crop such as asparagus or artichokes?

Again, as with flower beds and borders, it is important to keep the weeds at bay by regular hoeing, but avoid chemical weedkillers on food crops!

Pruning There are several ways to prune shrubs, but usually the best time is just after they have flowered. However, if a shrub flowers in March or April, prune it within a few weeks. Early summer flowering shrubs can be pruned immediately after flowering.

With late summer and autumn flowering shrubs, postpone pruning until late winter, as the unpruned growth will help to protect the plant during the winter months.

There are many tasks to complete during this increasingly active time of the year for gardeners, but they all help to make your garden a place to enjoy during the summer months.
