Book Review

from Chorlton Bookshop Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy by Helen Fielding Love her or hate her, Bridget is back! Now in her fifties with two small children in tow she must once again negotiate the single life. Without giving too many spoilers, Mark Darcy is no longer on the scene and Bridget must come to terms with a dating scene which relies more on the digital world than the actual one. Still surrounded by her weird and wonderful gang of mates we also encounter some even weirder and more

wonderful ones with this new book.

Helen Fielding has been criticised for writing this purely with a future film in mind. To be honest I challenge anyone to read it without Renee Zwellweger and Hugh Grant popping into your head. It doesn’t take away from the humour and pure pleasure of catching up with an old friend though. The format is much the same as the previous

two, with diary entries and continuous logs about calories consumed and weight gained.

We also have the added logs this time about tweets and texts sent to various people.

The tweets and texts often land her in disastrous but ultimately humorous situations.

This certainly isn’t a contender for the next Booker prize but what’s wrong with a little bit of trash now and then? If you’re a fan of the first two books and films then you are in for a treat.

Buy the book, a huge bar of chocolate and a bottle of wine.

Settle yourself on the sofa and don’t move until they are all finished.

Tea Hive goes double decker!

After only two years of trading, Tea Hive are extending their successful tea, coffee and cake emporium from one to two floors, including a specialist coffee brew bar and a licensed bar, all of which will be available for private hire.

This time two years ago owners Vicky and Michelle were decorating a new premises ready for their grand opening.

After meeting over a love of fresh, seasonal produce and good quality baking, Vicky, an environmental worker, and Michelle, a social worker, left their jobs to follow their dream of creating a haven for good food complete with vintage surroundings and excellent

service.

Since then they have built on this passion for excellent food to include regularly sold out events such as internationally themed supper nights, specialist coffee tastings and tea inspired cocktail evenings. Demand for their cakes has included catering for weddings, birthdays, funerals and a teacher’s retirement party in a school.

Michelle explains “We are really excited about this development as Tea Hive has built up a loyal following, the new extension will give a more relaxed and comfortable space to sit and enjoy a slice of cake and cup of tea, and we can host more

functions.”

Sticky Gingerbread with Lemon Drizzle Ingredients 150g butter 125g dark muscovado sugar 200g golden syrup 200g black treacle 2 tsp fresh ginger, grated 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp ginger powder

Method Pre heat oven to 170C Grease and line a 24cm by 33cm baking tray with greaseproof paper.

In a saucepan gently melt the butter, sugar, golden syrup, treacle, both types of ginger and cinnamon. When it’s all melted take off heat and add the milk, eggs and bicarbonate of soda in water and beat in with a whisk.

It should fizz up and increase in volume.

Sieve the flour into the separate

bowl then add to the butter sugar mixture, beating with a whisk.

Pour into tin and bake for 45mins – 1 hour, until well risen and firm and an inserted skewer comes out clean. Careful not to overcook!

While the cake is baking make the lemon drizzle by combining the juice of 1 lemon with the icing sugar. Add more lemon juice or icing sugar till you get a thick but drizzling consistency, the thickness of honey.

250ml milk 2 large eggs, beaten into the milk 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 2 tablespoons warm water (do this immediately before you’re going to use it) 300g plain flour

When cooled take out of the tin, cut into generous size squares and drizzle with the lemon icing.

The Story Of Chorlton-Cum-Hardy

Chorlton in the Great War by Andrew Simpson The Great War has now passed from living memory.

A conflict which claimed ten million dead, blighted the lives of millions more, and which is commemorated in towns and villages across the country has now really become a piece of history.

Here in Chorlton and Whalley Range there are a number of war memorials including one in the grounds of the Methodist Church on Manchester Road, another in the parish church and a few more including that in Southern Cemetery.

There are familiar local names and in some cases more than one member of the same family.

Few however now know of the contribution that was made by people in the township to those young men who were wounded and were cared for in Chorlton and Whalley Range.

The story of the first year of the military hospital in the Sunday School of the MacLaren Memorial Baptist Church on the corner of Wilbraham and Sibson Road was written up by the East Lancashire Branch of the British Red Cross as part of “An Illustrated Account of the Work of the Branch, during the First Year of the War.”* Sadly the records for the other Red Cross establishments have been lost. But we know that there would have been plenty of people from Chorlton and Whalley Range who served as voluntary nurses, orderlies, kitchen staff and administrators.

weekly ward concerts.

What is astounding is that the cost of equipping the hospitals was partly met by the public.

Nor did the generosity stop there. For while the War Office allowance for each man per day was 2 shillings [10p], the average cost for the upkeep per bed was 25 shillings [£1.25]. At the McLaren Hospital this was met by the public through “subscriptions, donations and the proceeds of entertainments.”

In Whalley Range there were at least five more Red Cross Hospitals ranging from private homes given over to the needs of war to theological colleges with room to spare.

The Lancashire Independent Colleges along with the Hartley Primitive Methodist College on Alexandra Road offered their dormitories as

hospital wards and then there were the private homes which have been less easy to locate.

Of these there was Sunnyside on Range Road, numbers 1 & 3 Burford Road and Lancaster House.

Sunnyside still exits and is a tall semi detached house on the north side of Range Road.

It was a small hospital accommodating just thirtythree beds and in 1917 the Red Cross decided to close it and transfer its patients to the Wesleyan College in Didsbury site which was to increase its capacity to 250 beds.

The houses on Burford Road are equally still shrouded in mystery. In 1911 number three was home to Mr and Mrs Gamble, their three daughters and a servant. It had nine rooms and was one of two semi detached properties on the corner of Burford and Withington Road.

Lancaster House on Whalley Road was already a military establishment being the HQ of C Squadron of the Imperial Yeomanry, continuing to serve the army well into the mid 20th century.

Now the existence of all these Red Cross Voluntary Hospitals across south Manchester has pretty much been forgotten which is a shame

The Rotary Club Needs You! Chorlton & District Rotary Club needs new members in order to survive and continue its work locally and internationally.

The Club meets every Wednesday evening at the Hough End Centre for a meal, for fellowship, to listen monthly to an invited speaker, and to organise the charitable actions of the club. The club regularly aids charitable local organisations such as St. Anne’s Hospice, and Francis House Childrens Hospice, gives illustrated dictionaries to primary school leavers, collects over 1000 second hand books

a year to give away in Literacy Week, and participates in a youth leadership scheme. It makes donations from time to time to such overseas bodies as Mercy Ships, Sightsavers, the Jaipur Limb Project, Disaster Aid, and Hope & Homes for Children. It supports Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio.

This work is funded mainly as a result of house to house collections at Christmas with collections at supermarkets at other times and special events from time to time. Every penny raised is distributed.

November In Your Garden

by Katherine Watson During November I will be taking time to overhaul a few things in my garden. Now that most of the herbaceous perennials are ready for a cut back and the garden has shrunk a little again, I can get to some of the structures that need a bit of TLC.

I have a rendered raised bed that has been painted black - successfully - for the past five years but has needed repainting at this time every other year (or every year for a finickity eye) and this year I’d like a change. I’m going to try a fairly new cladding system from Marshalls called ‘Stoneface’ - a natural stone veneer that comes in a variety of different colour ways and looks very easy to use.

Black or a dark slate works particularly well here as a contrast to the small seating area/gin terrace, paved with a creamy travertine, catching the sun for a couple of crucial early evening hours. The planting in this area will change too. The raised bed is quite deep with a small trimmed beech hedge

to the back and four box pyramids along its length. I wanted this area to have a feel of ‘loose formality’ so have interspersed the box with aquilegia ‘spitfire’ a bright orange version which works well but needs a bit more oomph and texture, so I’m thinking of introducing some stipa tennuissima for filigree contrast and some smatterings of sanguisorba ‘Nanna’. I’ve also got an out-of-hand pheasant’s tail grass (Anemanthele

lessoniana) enthusiastically moved from another part of the garden, but I think I might have to admit that my garden is just too small and offer it up for swaps.

The beauty of our relationships with our gardens is that we can, not too painfully, change and tinker with things we get fed up of, even swap the occasional loved, but time worn item without the intervention of Relate.

I’ve always been reluctant to get a haircut. I’ve had some bad experiences in the past; from the unfortunate shaggy dog perm to the experimental too short fringe.

I’m nervous about making an appointment, so a haircut is a once every couple of years thing and often disappoints.

Clive came to talk about booking advertising in Community Index a couple of months ago. It was the day after yet another bad haircut which had set me back £50 and was definitely not what I’d asked for.

Clive was very sympathetic and we had a long chat about how it could be put right. Then I waited a couple of months for it to grow out and called Clive.

I’d not considered using a mobile hairdresser before, but it now seems like the obvious solution for anyone with a busy life or who, like me, has had bad experiences in salons.

The whole experience was completely stress free. Clive was very easy to talk to and I felt comfortable (at home) enough to explain exactly what I wanted. He listened carefully and took the time to look at how my hair actually grows and sits.

by Leon Horton Visitors to the Vairochana Kadampa Meditation Centre & World Peace Café on High Lane may be aware that the building was once occupied by the Transport and General Workers’ Union; but who amongst us, I wonder, knew that this beautiful piece of architecture was previously a dance hall, a television rental store and even a famous art school?

76 High Lane has a long and illustrious history stretching back to 1891, when it first became the New Art School.

Established by local artist Thomas Edwin Mostyn (18641930), the New Art School was founded on his firm belief that “art is not a luxury, but an absolute necessity.”

Mostyn - best known for his vivid garden scenes - would later be recognised as an important landscape and figurative artist, and from 1917-1920 was president of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. Despite his many

workers’ unions) and exerted considerable influence over the Labour Party. Unlike Thomas Mostyn, however, it wasn’t much given to artistic appreciation, as it seems many of the building’s original fixtures and fittings were either covered up or removed.

In 2008, the building was bought by the Vairochana Kadampa Buddhist Movement, and underwent an extensive but respectful renovation.

The main art studio, with a magnificent bay window and stunning skylight was fully reconstructed, and is now a beautiful meditation hall, with the original sprung maple dance floor lovingly restored.

Winter Solstice Celebration at The Horse And Jockey For one night only the Horse and Jockey are transforming Chorlton Green into a winter wonderland to celebrate the shortest day of the year; Winter Solstice.

Taking place on the 21st December the night will present unique Christmas music from local bands and choirs. Including the Chorlton Children’s Choir, whose repertoire includes everything from Elbow to Elgar and Britten to Britpop. Followed by Chorlton Choir (this time adults) singing yuletide classics and Bo Weavil who will polish off the festival with Bluegrass.

All the entertainment will take place in a North Pole setting: Father Christmas and his entourage of elves will be handing out presents in the grotto, and you can feed Santa’s reindeer and play on the funfair rides too.

There’ll be Christmas bites and plenty of mulled wine and warm cider. You cn also take up on their offer of a festive feast served in their restaurant. With prices starting at £16.95 and entertainment too, the night promises to be an affordable fun family affair.

Sport in Chorlton Oswald Road Football Club’s Under 14s give smoking the red card

Whalley Range Cricket Club cap a great season in style

Manchester Stop Smoking Service (MSS) has sponsored the team’s new kit, first worn for a thrilling 4-3 victory over Timperley Villa Dragons.

There was a big crowd at Whalley Range CC, including Manchester’s Lord Mayor Naeem ul Hassan, to see their first team end a 121year drought by winning the Manchester Association division one title for the first time.

U14s manager, Paul Roscoe, said, ‘we support the campaign to promote awareness of dangerous secondhand smoke. This is an effective way of getting the smokefree message to young footballers and supporters. The team’s very excited about starting the season in new kit.’

Ali Reid, from MSS, said “Breathing secondhand smoke increases children’s risk of suffering meningitis, asthma, and glue ear and damages their ability to enjoy sport. It’s important that homes - and cars - are completely smokefree.

We’re delighted that the team’s carrying the message and wish them all the best.”

They beat Newton Heath by 113 runs and completed a trophy double as their second team had already wrapped-up their title the previous week.

Range racked up 220-2 with Paul Davies, a player at Range for 35 years scoring his first century for 15 years with 101 not out.

Abishiekh Kulkami, just 15 years old added 64 and in the Newton Heath reply Sajid Mahmood took six wickets as they were dismissed for 107.

With this being the last season of the Manchester Association, Range will join the Saddleworth League next season.
