Twenty years ago, a local group of forward thinking individuals believed the time was right to establish the Community Foundation of Dunn County. I’m sure they didn’t have all the details, but with hope and courage they moved ahead.

One hundred years ago, the community foundation idea was founded in the Midwest, sparking a new philanthropic movement that would inspire millions to contribute to the vision of their communities and secure a positive and enriched future for generations.

Thanks to their efforts and those of many dedicated individuals since then, the Community Foundation of Dunn County has grown to over a $5 million dollar endowment and has given back nearly $2 million to the citizens of Dunn County. Yet, there is much more to be done. Granted the Community Foundation of Dunn County may not change the world or influence the politics of Washington but, we can make a significant difference in our own backyard.

Whether it is: • A weekend meal for a school child, • A medical kit for a person with diabetes, • A veteran remembered, • A puppy adopted, • A bike trail established, • A flower basket on main street, • A warm blanket for a person without a home, • A family legacy preserved and honored, or • An emergency radio for an ambulance crew, we CAN make a difference in Dunn County!

We mark 2014 as the 100th anniversary of the community foundation movement which continues to flourish in communities around the world. In 2015, the Community Foundation of Dunn County will celebrate our own 20th anniversary, honoring the leagues of donors and volunteers whose generosity continues to create a better quality of life in our area.

Community Foundations are devoted to the people and places you love and grew up in. We are making history and a future together by helping people invest what they are passionate about, in the community they care about. Trillions of dollars are expected to transfer from one generation to another throughout the next 50 years. This philanthropic opportunity has the potential to improve the quality of life in both urban centers and small rural towns through economic development, health, education, environment, human services and arts. Community Foundations focus on helping people of all means to give back and make a difference.

DONOR HIGHLIGHT

CREATING IMPACT THROUGH INNOVATION MARILYN FANETTI

Don and Marilyn Fanetti owned and operated a specialized heavy hauling interstate trucking business called Structural Transport for 45 years in Milwaukee. However, their true love was farming and their lifelong dream was to retire and move back to Don’s home area in Dunn County. In 2005, that dream came true and they moved permanently to the Township of Red Cedar outside Menomonie. Sadly in 2009, Don lost his battle with cancer.

Since his passing, Marilyn Fanetti has thrown her heart and soul into turning her grief into good by supporting many community projects near and dear to both their hearts. Marilyn especially appreciates supporting youth projects and recently became the lead donor in sponsoring the renovation of the Dunn County Community Center in the County Rec Park. At the Center’s opening, Marilyn told the community members present that when Don and her were unable to have children, they decided to borrow ours. Youth and economic development projects are especially dear to Marilyn’s heart. When she heard through the Community Foundation of a pressing need in Boyceville, it galvanized her to start the Don and Marilyn Fanetti Donor Advised Fund at the Foundation to manage her giving.

The Boyceville community School District is the smallest school district in Dunn County, with many students coming from low-income families. Access to technology is an ongoing issue in Tiffany Creek Elementary School. This year the Common Good Fund at the Foundation was able to grant the school the money to purchase laptop computers. Due to lack of funds, they were unable to support the rest of Boyceville’s request. That’s when Marilyn jumped into action through her donor advised fund. She purchased the requested 3D printer and a new laptop for CAD design.

Grant writers, and math and science teachers, Andy Hamm and Steve Duerst were amazed when the Foundation told them a donor was stepping in to fund the printer. Marilyn is most excited about using the research skills of staff at the Community Foundation to help her find projects and initiatives that match her passions.

PREPARING STUDENTS TO BECOME TOMORROW’S INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS Foundation staff visited Steve Duerst's 5th grade classroom at Boyceville Elementary School to see the 3D printer in action. With this technology, students

are able to create objects that will supplement their education in a wide range of subjects while also teaching them innovative technological skills. With 3D printing being a 21st century skill, these students will gain the experience and skills to be better prepared for engineering, business and health care careers.

3D printing is a process of making a three dimensional solid object from a digital file. The printer uses an additive process to create a solid object by laying down successive layers of a material until the entire object is completed.

The students are extremely excited and enthusiastic about the new printer and were eager to discuss the objects they have made and what they look forward to making throughout the year. Duerst's 5th graders have already each created name tags in addition to creating a 3D image of the first successful submarine. Duerst is excited that they will be able to create real historical artifacts from digital images to physically show students what they look and feel like.

By exposing the children to 3D printing in elementary school, teachers hope to see higher enrollment in science related courses in high school.

A FUND FOR THE COMMON GOOD The Community Foundation’s core mission is serving the common good of the Dunn County region. We are grateful for the visionary donors who entrust the Foundation to deploy monies to address eleven local needs through this discretionary funding. The Board of Directors offered fiscal sponsorship to the Menomonie Area Mountain Bike Association while they are applying for 501c3 status.

The Foundation mailed stakeholders a valentine expressing thanks for their charitable passions and reminding them that philanthropy is the love of human kind.

The Women’s Giving Circle held its 2014 Annual Meeting.

MARCH 2014

GRANT HIGHLIGHTS ARTS Two hundred students from Dunn County were able to visit the Mabel Tainter for the Continental Ballet Company’s The Nutcracker. For many it was their first trip to the historic theater and to a ballet. Students were able to discuss the ballet with one of the performers during intermission. It is important for children to experience an art such as ballet and to witness how movement, music, and sets create a beautiful story without the use of dialogue.

ANIMAL WELFARE The Common Good Fund assisted with the creation of a bi-annual micro chipping clinic, held in the spring and the fall at the Humane Society. This clinic is able to provide cat micro chipping at a low cost of $10. A pet that is micro chipped is three times more likely to be reunited with its owner than a pet without a microchip. A Facebook user wrote: “Thank You for funding this! I had my 4 cats chipped.” Josh Dalton, Executive Director of the Humane Society, was all smiles when Foundation staff visited for an update.

YOUTH Steps for Girls aims to break down gender and cultural biases that may prevent young women from considering careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). STEPS is a summer camp for middle school girls, at UW-Stout. The STEPS camp focuses on manufacturing engineering through the fabrication of a unique product - an obstacle-avoiding robot, the Bug Bot - in a realistic production setting. Girls have handson lab sessions for packaging, plastics, electronics, automation and foundry and produce essential components for the robot.

ENVIRONMENT The Common Good Fund helped sponsor the Red Cedar: Land, Water & People Coming Together Conference. 2018 is the year the Tainter/Menomin Lake Improvement Association(TMLIA) has set to make the waters of lakes Menomin and Tainter clean and safe. Education is of key importance to accomplishing this goal. The DNR has said they track 100 recreational days in the summertime. Lake Menomin/Tainter is impaired for 92 of these 100 days. The goal is to reduce that number to less than 26 days of impairment. These conferences hope to spark conversation that leads to change.

The Board of Directors voted to manage the capital campaign for the Menomonie Area Sports Complex Fund to build a new sports arena at Menomonie High School.

In the first three months of 2014, the Community Foundation gave away almost a quarter of a million dollars from its various funds.

TURNING LOSS INTO LEGACY MARK AND ROBIN JOHNSON

Mark and Robin Johnson’s daughter Cammie had suffered from Juvenile Diabetes and passed away just before her 21st birthday.

Her family established the Cammie Johnson Juvenile Diabetes Golf Scramble, held each June in her honor. Proceeds from the scramble support both a scholarship fund that provides annual scholarships to high school seniors and are pursuing a career in the medical field and the CBJ Kids to Camp Fund. The Kids to Camp fund provides scholarships for youth up to age 19 to attend recreational, educational, or other personal development type camps. The camps provide safe environments for young people with diabetes to experience activities that are often not available to them in more traditional settings because of their illness. Thus far, the Johnson’s and their supporters have raised over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to honor Cammie’s memory.

With the support of the Community Foundation, in late 2014 Mark and Robin were able to move forward on another philanthropic dream, to provide diabetic medical supplies to those in need. The Diabetic Care Fund in Memory of Cammie B. Johnson will be created in 2015 to assist in payment of the pharmaceutical and medical supplies expenses of people who are low income with Type I or Type II Diabetes and people who are experiencing difficulties accessing supplies because they are either uninsured or cannot currently afford their out of pocket expenses.

In 2015, after six successful years of a golf scramble, the Johnsons and their sponsors will bring a new event to Menomonie. Davina & the Vagabonds will be performing at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts on September 12, 2015 for the first Cammie Johnson Juvenile Diabetes Concert.

The Foundation said goodbye to retiring Board Members Larry Feiler, Merlyn Jones, Kurt Larson and Jan Pierce.

The Alan J. Carlson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by his wife Ellen Carlson to benefit a graduating senior of Boyceville High School.

The Foundation celebrated 100 Years of Community Foundations with a special mailing and press releases.

SPECIAL PROJECTS CJ DIABETES FUND

In memory of Cammie Johnson, her parents and community volunteers have been raising funds to provide camp and education scholarship opportunities for local children and young adults to improve quality of life with Type 1 Diabetes.

DUNN COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND

The Dunn County Veterans Memorial is located in downtown Menomonie and encourages anyone to purchase a brick that will be placed in the walkway in memory of any veteran of their choosing.

DUNN COUNTY COMMUNITY CENTER FUND

The Dunn County Community Center Campaign is a project created to expand and renovate the existing Dunn County Multipurpose Arena building.

FREE 4 ALL FUND

This fund helps promote free outdoor summer concerts in Menomonie at the Band Shell in Wilson Park.

HERITAGE TREE FUND

To create awareness and appreciation of our valuable urban forest by planting trees in urban areas.

JOHN BRUNSTAD MEMORIAL RUN FUND

The family and friends of John Brunstad wished to create a fun, family oriented event that would raise awareness about Type 1 Diabetes and the needs of this great community we live in. The John Brunstad Memorial 10K two mile walk/run takes place along the Red Cedar State Trail in Menomonie.

LEADERSHIP LEGACY FUND

A fund established to benefit the Leadership Menomonie Program sponsored by the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce. Leadership Menomonie is a program designed to nurture and develop community leaders who have the skills to work together, are stimulated to be part of solution and accept ownership of community issues.

MENOMONIE POLICE DEPARTMENT EXPLORER FUND

A project designed to help teenagers explore a career in law enforcement.

MENOMONIE ROTARY CLUB KIDS AGAINST HUNGER FUND The Rotary Club of Menomonie’s Kids Against Hunger project is a humanitarian food-aid organization designed to reduce the number of hungry children in the United States and throughout the world.

MENOMONIE AREA MOUNTAIN BIKE ASSOCIATION FUND

The School District of Menomonie has been working alongside the Chippewa Valley Off Road Bicycle Association and the Menomonie Area Mountain Bike Association to develop biking trails at the 443-acre Bjornson Environmental Site located on N6945 160th St. The trail will be multi-use trail system for people to safely hike, run, and bike on.

MENOMONIE AREA SPORTS COMPLEX FUND

The Menomonie Area Sports Complex Capital Campaign is a project created to raise funds for the building of a sports complex at Menomonie High School. The proposed project will include a dual football/soccer field, nine-lane 400-meter track accompanied by field related facilities, a softball field, concessions, restrooms, 4,000 capacity bleachers, a grand entrance/plaza and ticket booth.

TUESDAY’S TABLE FUND

Tuesday’s Table is a community-wide program that serves a free hot meal every Tuesday from 5 pm – 6 pm in St. Joseph’s church basement. This meal is available to anyone as there are no eligibility requirements. Funding is provided by donations of cash or food from parishioners, local churches, and the community.

URBAN FORESTRY CARVING PROJECT FUND

This fund allows local artists to take non-living trees and carve the trunks into artwork. One of these art forms can be seen on the East side of Menomonie by Menomin Lake.

GFWC FLOWER BASKET FUND

The GFWC Menomonie Woman’s Club has undertaken the beautification of downtown Menomonie by hanging flower baskets. The hanging flower baskets not only add character to the downtown area, but have come to symbolize the caring nature of the community.

HEALTHY FUTURES FUND

A FIELD OF INTEREST FUND FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH The Healthy Futures Fund is the Community Foundation’s major source for competitive grants in the health field. Its objectives are to improve the health and well-being of Dunn County Residents by supporting direct health care needs, health education, increasing awareness and sharing quality of life opportunities to benefit all citizens. It also seeks non-traditional partnerships, collaborations, and innovative programs that have countywide impact.

GRANT HIGHLIGHTS

DUNN COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH The Family-Nurse Partnership program is an evidencebased community health program that empowers first time mothers living in poverty to become confident parents and strong women by pairing expectant mothers with a registered nurse who provides home visits from early in pregnancy until the child’s second birthday. The Community Foundation was able to provide a grant to help the nurse training program.

ARBOR PLACE Arbor Place is in the process of building a new facility in East Menomonie. The new facility, a 27,000 square foot building, is currently undergoing construction on 9 acres of land within the Menomonie city limits. The new facility will allow Arbor Place to enhance current programming and expand its services. These services will include a large community room which will be used for professional trainings, community-­based educational and support programs, social activies and employer training. The Healthy Futures Fund was able to assist the organization by approving a grant to purchase furnishings and other equipment for the community room. These furnishings will provide a warm, welcoming and relaxing experience for its residents as well as members of the community who are in need of support or guidance.

A BRIDGE TO HOPE A new front storm door and furnace were necessities for A Bridge to Hope's facility in East Menomonie this year. Their previous furnace had been repaired various times over the past few years and eventually certain parts that needed repair were no longer being manufactured and thus a new furnace was the only option to provide a warm and comfortable shelter for clients and their children. A Bridge to Hope has been serving the Dunn County area since 1993, providing shelter, support, information and referalls to those affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. Their mission is to empower individuals, families and communities through advocacy, education and collaboration.

DUNN COUNTY CHARITABLE REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION ESTABLISHED In November 2014, the Foundation established CFDC Properties LLC to focus exclusively on gifts of real estate. Charitable real estate transactions can help individuals reach their dreams of making a long lasting difference in their community. The Foundation awards over $40,000 to 14 local organizations in its first grant cycle of the year.

The Foundation and its donors awarded over $65,000 in scholarships to a diverse group of 65 students from area high schools.

LEGACY GIFT IN ACTION

THE BYRON AND CATHERINE OLSON FUND Byron and Catherine Olson desired that a portion of their estate be used to establish a fund to benefit the citizens of Dunn County that are in need of supplemental medical care or services. In 2011 the Byron and Catherine Olson Memorial Fund was established at the Foundation from a bequest in Byron’s will.

This fund allows the current Board of Directors at the Community Foundation to distribute funds where they are needed in Dunn County, each year.

This year the funds went to help provide dental care at the Free Clinic of the Greater Menomonie Area. The Free Clinic provides access to primary health care to those who have no health care alternative and are unable to afford healthcare services.

Dental disease is one of our most pressing public health problems. The causes of this silent epidemic include inadequate education and prevention, lack of supplies, and a shortage of providers serving low-income people. Because of the Bryon and Catherine Olson Memorial Fund, 20 people in Dunn County will receive the dental care they need this year.

A Women’s Giving Circle Gathering was held at the Cottage Winery.

We honored veterans at the 14th annual dedication of new bricks at the Dunn County Veterans Memorial on June 13th.

DONOR HIGHLIGHT

FOR A SUPER FAN, LOVE BECOMES A LEGACY BETTY GESCHE

Betty Gesche was born and raised in Menomonie. Throughout Betty’s life, she donated generously to many charities, both locally and internationally. Her brother, Francis Eiseth said, “She was a very private philanthropist, who often donated anonymously, never wanting to draw attention to herself.” After her death, Betty wanted to ensure two things; that her family and community were taken care of.

Betty left a portion of her estate to charity. One of her gifts was to the Community Foundation to set up an endowment fund to benefit the Menomonie School District. Betty was not just passionate about sports, she was the very definition of a super fan! She rarely missed a broadcast of the Badgers, Packers, and Brewers and spent many hours in the bleachers at Menomonie High. Even in her last few months at the American Lutheran Home, her Friday nights were spent listening to MHS Football on the radio.

The Betty Gesche Fund for Menomonie Athletics created by her bequest will help to build the new Menomonie High School Sports Complex, where her name will be forever inscribed as a devoted supporter of Menomonie Athletics. When complete, the Sports Complex will include a nine-lane track, field event areas, bleachers, press box, ticket booth, lights, scoreboard, restrooms, concessions, all-weather field for soccer and football, competition softball field, and improvements to the tennis courts and baseball field.

Betty’s own great grand nieces and nephews will be able to play sports in the MHS Sports Complex, something she would have loved to see. As an endowed fund, her donation will exist in perpetuity to help with the maintenance and upkeep of the stadium or any other athletic department needs at the Menomonie Public Schools.

NEW FUNDS CREATED IN 2014 ALAN J. CARLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND, BOYCEVILLE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP TRUST Ellen Carlson began a memorial scholarship in honor of her husband Alan J. Carlson. By establishing this scholarship, Ellen knows she will keep her husband’s spirit alive and benefit a Boyceville student with similar aspirations. Part of her estate will be bequeathed to this fund to ensure it exists in perpetuity.

DUNN COUNTY COMMUNITY CENTER CAMPAIGN FUND The Dunn County Community Center Campaign is a project to raise $1 million for the expansion and renovation of the existing Dunn County Arena building. The Menomonie Youth Hockey Association has teamed up with the Community Foundation of Dunn County to manage public donations towards this project. The project will add new locker rooms to the hockey arena, create an elevated, heated viewing area, expand the current concession stand and bathrooms and incorporate a new 4,000 square foot multipurpose room into the existing structure. Construction is being wrapped up in early 2015.

MENOMONIE AREA MOUNTAIN BIKE ASSOCIATION FUND The purpose of MAMBA is to work with land owners, public and private, to develop and maintain quality mountain bike trails in the greater Menomonie area for use by the public, and to encourage responsible use of mountain bike trails and resources. The foundation is providing them with fiscal sponsorship while they seek 501c3 status.

Stepping Stones has started an Acorn Fund to work toward an fully endowed fund that will provide a stream of perpetual income. Planned gifts to this fund are strongly encouraged.

THE BETTY GESCHE FUND FOR MENOMONIE ATHLETICS Menomonie native and sports enthusiast, Betty Gesche left a portion of her estate to benefit Menomonie Public Schools Athletic Programs. Her gift will help build the new Menomonie High School Sports Complex, where her name will be inscribed as a devoted supporter of Menomonie Athletics.

THE CLINT AND NORA MOSES FUND Clint and Nora opened the Clint and Nora Moses Fund. The couple wanted to find a way to further their philanthropic ideals and set up a sustaining fund that would benefit animals in Dunn County not only today, but for years to come.

WEST WISCONSIN LAND TRUST INVESTMENT FUND The West Wisconsin Land Trust works with landowners, conservation partners, and communities to conserve our natural heritage. This year they set up their Stewardship and Legal Defense Fund at the Foundation.

WILSON PLACE MANSION FUND The Dotseth Family set up a designated fund as a permanent endowment for the Wilson Place Mansion. Wilson Place, historic home to Captain Wilson, Founder of Menomonie, will benefit from a steady, long-term source of income now, thanks to the Dotseth family.

EXPENDING MENOMONIE’S WEEKEND BACKPACK MEAL PROGRAM TO OUR MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN Children receive 3 nutritious meals a day through Head Start, but what happens when they are home on the weekends? Head Start promotes school readiness for children ages 3-5. Trying to learn your shapes and colors is hard when you are hungry.

This year Stepping Stones had a dream of expanding their Share a Meal program (SAM) into Head Start. The SAM program already exists in many Menomonie area schools and provides weekend meals to children at risk of hunger when school meals are not available.

That is where Mark and Beverly Deyo-Svendsen and Joan Polaskey stepped in. Using their Donor Advised Funds they granted the money to provide 90 Head Start students meals for almost 6 months. Together, Mark, Beverley and Joan are making things better for children right here in Menomonie one meal at a time.

WHAT IS A DONOR ADVISED FUND? It is the most flexible type of fund offered by the Community Foundation and it lets you stay involved in the good works your gifts make possible.

TRANSFORMING PASSION INTO PURPOSE CLINT & NORA MOSES

Clint and Nora Moses have a passion for animals. On their farm in Menomonie they raise beef cattle, chickens, and a mini-donkey with the help of their four daughters. Their family’s love of animals runs deep and they have been donors to the Humane Society for almost ten years. Their charitable contributions help the organization find permanent and loving adoptive homes for animals throughout the county.

Clint and Nora Moses own and run Red Cedar Chiropractic at its new location on Broadway in North Menomonie and have been practicing in the area since 2003. Every year they hold a Patient Appreciation Day where patients can receive their adjustments for a $10 donation to the Dunn County Humane Society.

So when Clint and Nora Moses wanted become more purposeful and impactful with their philanthropic dollars, turning to the Community Foundation for help was an easy decision. This fund is the first of its kind at the Community Foundation, as it is designated for the support of animals and animal related non-profit organizations in the community.

Clint and Nora wanted to set up a sustaining fund that would benefit animals in their community not only today, but for years to come. At the same time, they wanted the flexibility to respond quickly to an urgent need as it became necessary. They opened the Clint and Nora Moses Fund, a non-endowed Donor Advised Fund, to accomplish their philanthropic goals.

IN MEMORY OF… PAUL AXELSEN, FUND HOLDER Paul and Bea Axelsen were committed citizens who truly believed in betterment of Dunn County for everyone. Native to Sparta, Wisconsin, Paul served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Air Corps before graduating from UW Stout with a degree in Industrial Education. After Paul retired from UW-Stout in 1987, Paul and Beatrice spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona, always returning to Menomonie for the summer. Paul was described as a forward thinker in his philanthropy, seeing what would be needed before it was needed. Paul and Beatrice set up three funds at the Community Foundation to benefit St. Joseph’s Church, the Shirley Doane Senior Center, and the Mayo Clinic-Red Cedar.

DAVID BARNARD, FOUNDER, FORMER BOARD MEMBER AND LEGACY MEMBER David Barnard was truly committed to helping better his community. In 1942 he married his wife Kathleen. He worked for many years at Stout, becoming the first dean for learning resources. David received UW-Stout’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009. In 2002, David and Kathleen were awarded the Outstanding Philanthropist Award by the Chippewa Valley Fund Raising Professionals. Locally, Dave was a member of the Menomonie Lions Club for more than 50 years and served as its president. He also was a board member of the Dunn County Historical Society; United Way (chair); Menomonie Public Library Foundation (chair); Stout University Foundation; Disabled and Elderly Transportation (chair); First Bank and Trust Advisory Committee; Dunn County Humane Society; Friends of the Red Cedar Trail; Wisconsin Regional Art Association; Institute for Learning in Retirement; and Greater Menomonie Area Community Foundation.

PAT SOBOTA, FORMER BOARD MEMBER Pat Sobota of Wilson lived a fascinating life marked by her service to her community. At the age of 19 she moved to New York to study and work in fashion before she volunteered with AmeriCorps VISTA. It was while she was volunteering in Arkansas that she met her husband Mark. Mark and Pat moved to Wilson where they raised their children. Pat continued her life of giving to her community, by serving on the Board of Directors of the Menomonie Rotary Club, Menomonie Chamber of Commerce, Hospice Board, Community Foundation of Dunn County, First Bank & Trust, and the Mabel Tainter Theater. Pat was truly committed to making our community the best it could be.

TURNING HEARTACHE INTO A HEARTWARMING GIFT ELLEN CARLSON

In 2009, when Warren Buffet and Bill Gates launched their “Giving Pledge” campaign they asked the world’s billionaires to pledge to give at least half their fortunes to charity. Today over a hundred billionaires have signed the pledge. Alan Carlson believed that you don’t have to be a billionaire to commit to this cause. He wanted to bring this pledge to life on a local level. Alan believed that his and Ellen’s estate should be left to charity. After Alan death, Ellen Carlson took on the challenge. As part of her estate planning, Ellen set up a memorial scholarship in honor of her husband, at the Foundation.

Alan graduated from Boyceville High School in 1967. He obtained a Business Administration degree from UW-Stout and received an Agriculture Extended Degree from UW-River Falls. Ellen and Alan took over Alan’s family farm. The farm is surrounded by acres of lush woodlands, perfect for Alan’s love of the outdoors.

Alan was an avid reader and progressive thinker. He loved learning and traveling. He was a participant in the Wisconsin Rural Leadership Program, which allowed him to travel the world. His travels included China, Cuba, Hungary, New Mexico, Turkey and Vietnam, and Washington D.C. where he learned about issues dealing with health care, economics, and different religious and cultural practices.

By establishing this scholarship, Ellen knows she will keep her husband’s spirit alive and benefit a Boyceville student with similar aspirations. This is just the starting point of Ellen and Alan’s philanthropy. Ellen plans on fulfilling Alan’s wishes and bequeathing their estate to charity.

Members work together to grant collective funds into Dunn County through a competitive grantmaking process. At a time when individuals seem increasingly disconnected from each other, giving circles promote collective learning, decision-making and giving. They build community by rallying individuals who, over the course of their work together, have meaningful conversations and make real-world decisions.

“The Women’s Giving Circle is built on the belief that we can do far more together than we can ever do individually.” Judy Gifford, WGC Founder and CFDC Board Member.

In 2014, the Women’s Giving Circle made the following grants: • The Bridge to Hope received $800 to purchase gas cards for their residents. The cards will provide domestic abuse victims support and resources in an effort to avoid returning to an abusive situation.

• Smart Girls Rock received $300 to be used as seed money for a promotional materials for a half day event at Menomonie High School. The program will expose Freshman and Sophomore girls to careers involving the science and mathematics fields, inspiring them to pursue STEM coursework and hopefully, lead them into those careers.

• Fierce Freedom, an organization that visits schools in an effort to raise awareness of human trafficking, received $1,400.

This grant will be used to expand the education about human trafficking to more schools in Dunn County. It will also allow them to provide more materials to the schools they visit.

• Stepping Stones received $1,000 to expand the SAM (Share a Meal) Program. SAM provides bags of food that go home on Fridays with children in our area elementary schools. The food is used by families to help feed that child through the weekend. This grant will provide 500 meals.
