2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

Love is the Community Foundation of Broward’s driving force. Love for the people of our vibrant, diverse community. Love for philanthropy that transforms lives and makes this an even better place to call home. It’s a love shared by donors, nonprofits, professional advisors and others who partner with us to tackle big challenges and invest in opportunities to create lasting impact.
Thanks to this shared love of community, we set another annual grantmaking record during our 2024 fiscal year. The Community Foundation provided $20 million to support student achievement, the arts, health care, seniors, career readiness, environmental resilience, equity and social justice, empowering nonprofits and much more. We also fostered collaborations that provide support for the LGBTQ community, champion “health hubs” in underserved neighborhoods and are creating “Love” murals – by renowned artist Cey Adams – that will beautify and inspire nine communities across Broward.
In addition, during 2024 we commemorated our 40th anniversary with special “40 for 40: Spread the Love Grants” – awarding $400,000 total for 40 special projects to feed people in need, provide health care screenings, expand access to the arts, jumpstart environmental cleanups, help seniors and do even more to make life better in Broward.
All of this is made possible by the Fundholders and Legacy Society members who partner with us to create a BOLD impact for the community we love.
Now as we launch into a new year, we are unveiling a new slogan –“Lead with Love” – to guide our mission and inspire more people to join us. Together, our love for Broward can shape a brighter future for generations to come.

Strong Nonprofit Community
Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence
$400,000+ in fiscal year 2024 support for nonprofit trainings, technical support and other resources.
The Community Foundation has long served as a go-to resource to help sustain and strengthen Broward nonprofits. Through the years, our training programs and professional development initiatives have helped nonprofits improve their fundraising, broaden their leadership ranks and expand community services that touch lives across Broward.
In 2022, we launched the Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence to take our support for nonprofits to new heights. The Nonprofit Center provides new training and other critical resources to help nonprofit professionals and volunteers build skills and gain tools to amplify their organizations’ impact.
Lead by Director Cathy Brown, the Nonprofit Center:
• Provides training and other continuing education – online and at sessions hosted by the Community Foundation
• Supports nonprofit capacity building and core mission work
• Features a website with easy-touse online tools and information
• Fosters collaborations, mentoring and connections that lead to better community outcomes
In addition, the Nonprofit Center collaborates with The Fund Raising School at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy to host certification classes at the Community Foundation. And the Nonprofit Center teams up with Resilia and MindEdge to help more Broward nonprofits participate in online education opportunities.
During our 2024 fiscal year, the Nonprofit Center served more than
2,400 in-person participants with classes, coaching and other resources to strengthen nonprofits’ role in our community.
More than 8,100 Nonprofit Center website visitors tried online training, explored our directories of local nonprofits and consultants, and tapped into our “Resource Library” that includes helpful publications, podcasts, templates and additional tools.
(Photo on left) Nonprofit Center Director Cathy Brown congratulates Shedly Casseus for completing a training program. (Top photo) Cathy leads a training session.
Future plans for the Nonprofit Center include launching a CEO/Executive Director certification program, collaborations to help nonprofits attract diverse and engaged Board members, expanded online and in-person training sessions and much more.
Thanks to a growing endowment – made possible by visionary philanthropists who invest in strengthening Broward’s nonprofit community – the Nonprofit Center’s impact will continue for generations to come.
“It’s helping us continue to move forward and make sure that we are not behind the game,” Denise Athis, of the Jack & Jill Center, said about training and peer-to-peer learning activities available at the Nonprofit Center. “I would like to applaud the Community Foundation for providing this platform for us.”
2024 HIGHLIGHTS
IMPACT IN ACTION Empowering Nonprofits
2,415 Nonprofit Center in-person participants
37 classes provided through the Nonprofit Center
8,125 Nonprofit Center website users
884 nonprofits helped by Nonprofit Center services
A decade ago, Felipe Pinzon honed his leadership skills in a year-long training program for nonprofit professionals, provided at the Community Foundation of Broward. Eight years later, in 2022, he was appointed President/CEO of Hispanic Unity of Florida, a role in which he continues to champion the values and skills fostered by the Foundation.
In 2024, Felipe returned to the Community Foundation to share how its support continues to uplift nonprofit organizations like the one he leads. In addition to Hispanic Unity of Florida receiving more than $670,000 in Community Foundation grants through the years to help people in need become self-sufficient, members of Felipe’s team are also building skills and gaining tools through lessons learned at the Nonprofit Center.
“Every time I walk into this room, I get so emotional,” Felipe told Community Foundation Board Members at their February meeting. “I really want to thank the Community Foundation for the support over the years. … You are making a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.”
Racial Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
$300,000+ in fiscal year 2024 support for convenings, exhibits and other outreach efforts to champion REDI.
To “Lead with Love” requires striving for Broward to be a place where all residents feel welcome and have a real opportunity to achieve success. Too often, the community we love falls short of that standard. We know philanthropy can do more to help achieve long-overdue change.
Support for Racial Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion is one of the focus areas where we target our leadership and grantmaking to empower our community to reach its full potential.
This critical focus area, which we call REDI, provides support for scholarships, arts projects that champion social justice, “No Place for Hate” student programs, training to help local leaders avoid implicit bias, programs to make Broward institutions more inclusive, outreach to overcome health inequities in underserved neighborhoods and much more.
REDI factors into everything from the Community Foundation’s internal operations to our grantmaking and community collaborations. These pages feature a few examples of how the Community Foundation, through REDI, champions systemic, sustainable and scalable change.
2024 HIGHLIGHTS
LGBTQ Collaboration: Our grantmaking collaboration with The Our Fund Foundation provided $300,000 during 2024 for 10 initiatives to tackle discrimination and disparities faced by the LGBTQ community. This was the third year of a collaboration that has produced nearly $1 million to support education, youth mentoring, museum exhibits, advocacy, outreach and more.
Health & Resource Hubs: To overcome health inequities, we team up with nonprofits, businesses, residents and more to create “Health and Resource Hubs.” By fostering collaboration and providing $350,000+ in initial support, we are bringing more food pantries, health services, student support and more to South Broward, Lauderhill, Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach.
Diverse Leadership: One of the most diverse Board executive teams in our 40-year history led the Foundation during 2024. People of color held four of the six posts, including Juliet Murphy Roulhac, the first Black woman to serve as Chair. Her team included Mona Pittenger, Vice Chair; Jonathan Allen, Secretary; Bertha Henry, Treasurer; Burnadette Norris-Weeks, At-large and Eric Vainder, At-large.
Inclusion
LGBTQ Advocacy Through Arts: Our $150,000, two-year grant for the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida supports concerts and community engagement events that attract more than 20,000 attendees to hear a message of acceptance and overcoming hate, spread through the power of song.
Goundbreaking Documentary:
As criticism of Haitian immigrants became an issue in the presidential campaign, a compelling documentary was released about the barriers to social mobility Haitians face in South Florida. The short film, produced with support from the Community Foundation, shed new light on how more civic engagement and economic development support could remove barriers to success.
Civil Rights Exhibit: We partnered with Old Dillard Museum and the T.J. Reddick Bar Association to present the “Brown to Broward” exhibit, marking the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case declaring public school segregation unconstitutional. The exhibit featured local attorney W. George Allen’s role in desegregating schools.
Celebrating Black Philanthropy: We teamed up with the Urban League and the Children’s Services Council to hold a Black Philanthropy Month reception in August. This celebration of the Black community’s tradition of giving back is an example of our commitment to engaging and partnering with Black philanthropists to help them create lasting impact.
Empowering Women of Color: Community Foundation support for the Women of Color Empowerment Institute’s Professional Mentorship Leadership Program helps up-and-coming professionals learn from experienced community leaders who share insights about overcoming hurdles, building support networks and achieving success. This invaluable community organization was founded by Foundation Board Member Burnadette Norris-Weeks.
“Embracing and learning from our differences is not just the right thing to do, it’s essential for innovation, creativity and building a truly inclusive and equitable society. We applaud The Community Foundation of Broward’s continued investment in programs and policies that foster a sense of belonging for all.” – Germaine Smith-Baugh, Ed.D., President and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County
Additional Grantmaking
$3.7 million in fiscal year
Support beyond our Focus Areas
2024 grants
In addition to our Focus Areas grantmaking, we also partner with philanthropists who enlist our expertise to make a lasting impact for other important local causes and organizations.
And for philanthropists who want to make an impact beyond Broward, we partner with them to create
charitable funds at the Community Foundation that support their favorite nonprofit organizations across the country and around the world.
Support for animal welfare, scientific research, scholarships as well as organizations outside of Broward are examples of how grantmaking from charitable funds created in partnership with the Community Foundation transforms lives and shapes a brighter future – in our community and beyond.
2024 HIGHLIGHTS
Animal Welfare
The character of our community is reflected in the way we treat our animals. Since our founding in 1984, the Community Foundation has partnered with fundholders who share that passion to support animal rescue, medical care, food, adoptions, habitat preservation and much more. For example, during 2024 our grantmaking support provided: 51 horses relief and sanctuary at the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary; 35+ dogs medical treatment, shelter and placement in new homes through The Pet Project and Everglades Angels Dog Rescue; and 330+ cats dental cleanings, diabetic treatment and spay/neutering services.
Cancer Research
Three innovative local research projects are raising new hope for cancer-fighting success thanks to nearly $1 million in Community Foundation support spread over three years. Scientists and researchers working on projects led by Broward Health, Florida International University and Memorial Foundation are developing unique approaches to screen and connect a diverse group of patients to the best treatments or clinical trials to improve their chances of becoming cancer free. The goal is to make lifesaving treatments more readily available and close to home for all Broward cancer patients.
Scholarships
The Community Foundation partners with fundholders to offer scholarships that help students of all ages overcome financial barriers to higher education. During 2024, students received more than 80 Community Foundation scholarships totaling $203,000 to help them attend universities and career training opportunities in Florida and beyond. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 per year and are renewable for four years of higher education. That includes support from two endowed scholarship funds created by brothers Jonathan and Timothy Allen to honor their father, Broward civil rights trailblazer W. George Allen, and his wife, Enid.
Beyond Broward
Whether it’s finding trustworthy donation opportunities after far-away natural disasters or creating endowments to support fundholders’ out-of-state alma maters, the Foundation’s grantmaking reaches anywhere our fundholders want to make a lasting difference. For example, Mary N. Porter’s $43 million estate gift to the Foundation –our largest ever – transforms our community with endowed support for the arts, affordable housing, families in need, mental health and much more. Mary (shown above) also partnered with us to ensure endowed support for the YMCA Pottstown and the First Presbyterian Pottstown in her beloved Pennsylvania hometown.
40 YEARS BOLD
Forty years ago, a few charitably minded Broward County residents decided to team up to do more for the community they loved. Their simple idea – that together they could create greater impact than going it alone – launched what would become the Community Foundation of Broward.
Since the Community Foundation began in 1984, hundreds of individuals, families and organizations have partnered with us to be more strategic and impactful with their giving. Through partnerships with these dedicated philanthropists as well as collaborations with nonprofits and professional advisors, the Community Foundation serves as a powerful force for good – transforming lives and making the community we love an even better place to call home.
Thanks to the power of endowment, the important work of the Community Foundation will continue for generations to come.
These pages feature a few examples of how, throughout 2024, we have showcased the Community Foundation’s 40 years of BOLD impact.
One of the first organizational meetings for what would become the Community Foundation of Broward included (shown left to right) Leonard Robbins, Co-Founder Jack Deinhardt, Jim Blosser, William Gundlach, Stewart Kester and Co-Founder Libby Deinhardt.

‘BOLD’ Results
During 2024, we celebrated a fantastic finish to our BE BOLD Leadership Campaign, which over seven years raised $415 million in new gifts and planned gifts!
We launched this ambitious campaign to build endowment and grow philanthropic resources to tackle our fast-growing community’s needs for generations to come. Philanthropists joined the “BE BOLD” movement by adding to or creating charitable funds at the Foundation, or by committing to estate gifts that will fuel endowed support for the community they love.
We are overwhelmed by the success of the campaign, which has helped us grow to 571 charitable funds, add more than 50 planned gifts and reach 60 Community Builders – visionaries who partner with us to create endowed funds of $1 million or more. These BOLD investments in Broward’s future will generate millions in grantmaking support each year for education, the arts, economic mobility, social justice, the environment, seniors in need and much more.
Thank you to everyone who partners with us to “BE BOLD” for the community we love!

IMPACT IN ACTION Enduring Legacy
Randy and Larry Cotter used the power of endowment to celebrate their sister’s memory and ensure her legacy of helping others would never end.
Elizabeth Cotter, who succumbed to cancer at just 49 years old, was a teacher and accomplished equestrian who had a passion for helping young people and animals. To celebrate her life, Randy and Larry partnered with the Community Foundation to create The Elizabeth Cotter Memorial Fund
In 50 years, your endowed fund has produced more than $283,200 in grants and your fund balance reaches $128,323 – and keeps growing!
In 15 years, your endowed fund has produced more than $77,600 in grants and your fund balance is $107,768
After one year, your endowed fund produces $5,000 in grants and your fund balance is $100,500
Year after year, the Foundation’s expert team safeguards Elizabeth’s memorial fund and identifies grantmaking opportunities for the endowment to make a lasting difference. Already, the endowed fund has provided more than $500,000 in support for people facing cancer, families in need, young people leaving foster care, scholarships, equine-assisted therapy, animal rescue and much more. Thanks to the power of endowment, grants in Elizabeth’s name will continue to make lives better for generations to come.
Now, after Larry’s recent passing, Randy is creating a new endowment to honor his brother and ensure that – just like Elizabeth’s fund – grants in Larry’s name will help carry on the family’s charitable impact forever.
FUNDHOLDERS
Community Foundation “Fundholders” are individuals, families and organizations in Broward who partner with us to be more strategic and impactful with their giving. We make it easier for our fundholders to make the most of their philanthropy.

“When we decided to establish an endowed fund, there was never a question in my mind as to where to put it. The Community Foundation is the perfect spot. I know that the fund will be safe. I know it will be used for its intended purposes. And most importantly, I know it will be there long after we’re gone.”
– Former Board Member, Steve Halmos, who along with his wife Madelaine, is a Foundation Community Builder and a Founding Benefactor of the Foundation.
IMPACT IN ACTION Stronger Together
Albert and Beatriz Miniaci share a passion for giving back and getting involved to support the community they love. They have long focused their support on smaller nonprofit organizations that provide a “hand up” to children in need, people with disabilities and other underserved populations.
After years of going it alone with their philanthropy, Albert and Beatriz partnered with the Community Foundation to help them create an even greater impact. Though the endowed Albert and Beatriz Miniaci Family Fund at the Foundation, they ensure sustainable, permanent support for organizations and causes that matter to them. Also, our expert team helps Albert and Beatriz grow support for their charitable passions through matching-grants initiatives, supported by their fund.
In addition, Albert and Beatriz are continuing a family tradition of philanthropy through the Foundation. In 2023 they followed the lead of Albert’s mother, Rose, and became our first second-generation “Community Builders” – philanthropists with endowed funds of $1 million or more at the Foundation.
“We hope creating our endowed fund inspires others to join in and help our community achieve its full potential,” Beatriz said.

“Nonprofit Community Builders” are visionary partners who team up with the Community Foundation to create endowed charitable funds of $1 million or more. IMPACT IN ACTION Advisor Collaborations
During the Community Foundation’s early days, attorney Christy Lambertus joined Co-founder Libby Deinhardt on visits to professional advisors and local leaders to help spread the word about the new Foundation.
Early on, Christy recognized the value of creating the Community Foundation to champion local philanthropy and serve as a go-to resource for Broward’s professional advisors – with a team of philanthropy experts ready to help advisors meet the needs of their charitably minded clients.
Throughout her four decades of collaborating with the Community Foundation, Christy has helped 18 clients create charitable funds at the Foundation – more than any other member of our Professional Advisors Council. That translates to millions of dollars in endowed support for health care, education, families in need and much more.
“I have seen it from the beginning. I have confidence in it,” Christy said.
“I know that everyone’s money will be secure and that (my clients) will be happy. … I’m thrilled with everything they are doing.”

IMPACT IN ACTION Board Leadership
Juliet Murphy Roulhac considers local philanthropy an investment in helping our community achieve its full potential.
That’s why she partners with the philanthropy experts at the Community Foundation to make the most of her charitable giving. And that’s why she volunteers her time to serve on the Foundation’s hands-on Board of Directors.
During her tenure, Juliet and her fellow Board members prioritized community input to craft the Foundation’s new strategic plan. The Board fostered Foundation efforts to partner with more Black philanthropists to help develop a more diverse community of philanthropy. Juliet made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve as Foundation Board Chair. And along the way, she and her fellow Board members helped the Foundation set new grantmaking records.
“When you have Board members who are engaged and feel that they are really contributing to the overall mission of the organization, I think that’s when the magic happens. That’s why I really believe that all of us feel so happy to be on this Board,” Juliet said.

FINANCIAL STEWARDSHIP
The Community Foundation is an outstanding Fiduciary with a 40-year track record of success stewarding philanthropic assets. Our expert finance staff works hand in hand with a top-notch independent investment consultant to safeguard charitable funds and grow our endowment. The Foundation’s team benefits from the guidance and oversight of our Board of Directors, an audit committee and an investment committee.
Clearly defined responsibilities, independent decision-making and separation of duties are among the ways we remain a strong and stable Fiduciary – providing peace of mind to the donors who partner with us to create the charitable funds that support their philanthropy.
The Foundation’s investment philosophy is to earn a return that allows for meaningful grants on behalf of our fundholders, while growing the principal of endowed charitable funds for increased giving power over time. Our investment objectives include:
• Grow principal of endowed funds.
• Achieve long-term returns in excess of grantmaking and the rate of inflation.
• Earn investment returns that meet or exceed performance benchmarks.
• Carefully balance risk vs return.

‘LEAD WITH LOVE’ MURALS
The Community Foundation and Business for the Arts Broward are partnering with acclaimed artist Cey Adams for the “Lead with Love” mural project – a transformative public art initiative, designed to spread a message of love and unity across Broward County.
This ambitious project, running through 2027, will ultimately create murals in nine different cities that enliven public spaces, unify the community and promote cultural engagement.
Each of Cey’s murals will serve as a cultural landmark, enhancing local character and providing a space for communal gathering and reflection. The murals are intended to be lasting symbols of love and cultural diversity that contribute to the artistic landscape of Broward and foster a deeper appreciation for art and community collaboration.
The “Lead with Love” collage, created by Cey Adams to commemorate the Community Foundation’s 40-year anniversary, hangs in the Foundation’s entryway and is featured throughout this publication.

OUR MISSION:
To transform our community through focused leadership that fosters collaboration, builds endowment, advances equity, and connects people who care to causes that matter.
