CCM - Because we know local matters!

Reflexology is the practice of applied acupressure to the nerve endings in the feet, most commonly, as well as the hands, ears, and face. Each specific nerve ends in a reflex point which correlates to the part of the body that nerve is most connected to, be it an organ, a joint, a muscle, or a major nerve. In Pennsylvania, there is no state mandated course or license necessary to call oneself a Reflexologist. There are many amazing schools available to learn this practice and to become certified from their perspective. Most of these schools require 200 hours of learning between classroom, homework, and hands on training. An education of this level is equitable to an Associates Degree in most subjects.

Nationally, many practices have boards that oversee the quality and consistency of training and education in specific fields. In Reflexology, the American Reflexology Certification Board oversees certification of the schools as well as individual national certification. To be an accepted school, the institution must have a preapproved curriculum that teaches the same things across the nation. Once a practitioner has graduated from an approved curriculum, they can apply to take the national boards. This is an intensive process including a 300 question test, a hands on practicum, and 30 accurately documented sessions with individual clients.

When you are choosing to have someone work on your body, help ease your aches and pains, relax your nervous system and help return you to homeostasis, think carefully about who you are allowing to do that. While anyone in Pennsylvania can say they are a reflexologist, some have gone through all the efforts to obtain their ARCB National Board Certification. You can be assured those people will have a full breadth of knowledge in their skill and be caring for your feet, hands, ears, or face from a place of expertise. Reflexology helps every body, and self care should be a priority.

THE ROLE OF PYSICAL THERAPY IN FALL PREVENTION

Falls represent a significant health risk, particularly for older adults and those with mobility challenges. Among the most effective strategies for fall prevention is physical therapy, which offers tailored interventions designed to enhance strength, balance, and overall mobility.

Understanding Fall Risks

Falls can be influenced by various factors, including:

Muscle Weakness:

Reduced strength in the legs and core can compromise stability.

Balance Issues:

Diminished balance and coordination increase the likelihood of falls.

Vision Impairments:

Poor eyesight affects depth perception and spatial awareness.

Environmental Hazards:

Cluttered spaces, poor lighting, and uneven surfaces pose significant risks.

How Physical Therapy Can Help Prevent Falls

Comprehensive Assessment

A physical therapist conducts a thorough evaluation to assess an individual’s physical abilities, risk factors, and history of falls. This assessment helps to create a personalized exercise program tailored to the individual’s specific needs.

Strength Training

Strengthening exercises are central to physical therapy. By targeting key muscle groups, especially in the lower body, therapists help improve overall strength and endurance. Enhanced muscle strength contributes to better stability and reduces the risk of falls.

Balance and Coordination Exercises

Physical therapy incorporates specific exercises aimed at improving balance and coordination.

Techniques may include:

Balance Training:

Activities such as standing on one leg or using balance boards enhance stability.

Functional Movements:

Practicing everyday movements, like bending, reaching, and turning, helps individuals navigate their environments safely.

Gait Training

Many individuals exhibit altered walking patterns that increase fall risk. Physical therapists provide gait training to develop a more stable walking style. This may involve using assistive devices to promote safe mobility and confidence while walking.

Education and Awareness

Education is a critical component of fall prevention. Physical therapists inform clients about their specific fall risks and provide strategies to mitigate them. This includes advice on home modifications, safe footwear, and the importance of regular vision checks.

Home Exercise Programs

To reinforce progress made in therapy, physical therapists often provide home exercise programs. These programs encourage individuals to continue practicing strength and balance exercises, promoting ongoing improvement and safety.

Ongoing Monitoring and Support

Regular follow-ups with a physical therapist allow for the monitoring of progress and adjustments to the exercise program as needed. This ongoing support ensures that individuals stay motivated and continue to challenge themselves appropriately.

If we prioritize fall prevention, incorporating physical therapy into health and wellness plans can be a transformative step toward a safer, more active life.

Beating the Summer Heat... Staying Cool & Comfortable during the hot summer months

1. Stay Hydrated:

One of the most crucial steps in combating the summer heat is staying properly hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to replenish your body’s fluid levels and prevent dehydration. Carry a water bottle with you at all times, and opt for hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables.

2. Dress Appropriately:

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and helps to keep you cooler. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

3. Seek Shade:

When outdoors, find shade under trees, canopies, or umbrellas to escape direct sunlight. Create shade in your own backyard with patio umbrellas or install awnings. Limit your exposure to the sun during peak hours, typically between 10 am and 4 pm.

4. Use Fans and Ventilation:

Maximize airflow in your home by

using ceiling fans, floor fans, or portable fans. Open windows during cooler evenings and early mornings to let in fresh air. Consider using curtains, blinds, or reflective window films to block out the sun’s heat.

5. Utilize Cooling Techniques:

Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature. Place a cold towel or ice pack on your neck or wrists to provide instant relief. Use a spray bottle filled with water to mist your face and body for a refreshing sensation.

By implementing these simple strategies, we can effectively beat the summer heat and enjoy the season comfortably. Remember to prioritize your health and well-being during hot weather conditions by staying hydrated, dressing appropriately, seeking shade, utilizing fans and ventilation, and employing cooling techniques. With these measures in place, you can make the most of summer and stay cool and refreshed despite the soaring temperatures.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY

1. Arrive Early: Encourage your child to arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This will prevent them from rushing and potentially putting themselves in danger.

2. Stand Back from the Road: Teach your child to stand at least six feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus. Remind them to be cautious of traffic and never attempt to board the bus until it has come to a complete stop.

3. Seatbelt Safety: If your child’s school bus is equipped with seat belts, ensure they understand the importance of wearing them properly. Seat belts can significantly reduce the risk of injury during sudden stops or accidents.

4. Behavior on the Bus: Emphasize the importance of good behavior on the bus. Instruct your child to remain seated throughout the journey, keep the aisles clear, and avoid distracting the driver. Rowdy behavior can lead to accidents and compromise the safety of everyone on board.

Tor’s Taste T UR

Chicken, chicken, chicken, what combo you pickin’?! My friends, if you’ve heard that jingle before, you’ve experienced awesomeness. If you haven’t, let’s fix that. This month is probably my most anticipated taste tour I’ve had! We’re talking like years! I thought I was going to go to the grave before getting that tasty Raising Cane’s sauce in my belly here in Pennsylvania. For those of you who aren’t in the loop, Raising Cane’s is one of the fastest growing chain restaurants in the United States, originating in Baton Rouge. Cane’s ONLY sells chicken fingers, fries AND Buttery Texas toast with mind blowing zesty Cane’s sauce which I can basically drink with a straw because I love it so much.

The reason I’m so excited?! Because us Cane’s lovers have been waiting for a local one for 80 billion years. Literally 80 billion. Sure, Philly has gotten a few in the last year or so, but finally it was our time to shine! This past month, a new Raising Cane’s opened in Trexlertown and I attended the grand opening. Lines and lines and crowds and crowds, all excited for their chicken! The staff members were so happy, so kind, and jumping around dancing! Two of my friends won free chicken for a year! The manager comped our meals for the day. Inside, the upbeat music thumped away and the disco balls spun from the ceiling while people happily dunked their toast into the special sauce.

Now, let’s get into the taste. For the first day of a restaurant? Immaculate. So fresh, tasty and made to order, they had it down like a well oiled machine. The chicken was crispy, the cole slaw fresh and crunchy, all of it was correct, in the bag and warm! A hack for you, order your toast “Bob style” with an extra sauce, slice the toast open and stick a chicken finger in. BOOM. Diy chicken sandwich.

So dear friends, I’ll ask you again. Chicken chicken chicken, what combo you pickin’?! Raising Cane’s is located on Hamilton Boulevard, Trexlertown, just a short drive from the Valley. It’s sooo worth the ride. Tell them Tor sent ya!
