Welcome to the Fall 2013 edition of Al-Mujtama’a (Community). With this issue, we would like to celebrate the Community College of Qatar and its first ever official newspaper, “Al-Mujtama’a”. After a long few months we have finally put together a newspaper that the college can be proud of. We are happy to be working with Planet News Business.

This septuple growth combined with an increase in Faculty and Staff has resulted in a series of sweeping changes across both campuses to alleviate any expansion pains felt as CCQ enters into its fourth year of development. “As of today, the enrollment headcount for the 2013 Fall is 1, 936,” stated Dana Fields, the new Registrar and Director of CCQ Admissions. A 33.3% increase over the Spring, this has required CCQ Administrators, Facilities Managers, and the Executive Board to re-strategize how to best properly allocate space and divvy up supplies among CCQ’s growing numbers. Throughout the month of September, Administrators discussed and implemented changes aimed at transforming old rooms and areas not normally used by the majority of the college body into classrooms and offices. “We regret for any inconveniences

caused, but we have to accept the fact that we are in a shortage of space (classrooms, offices, services) and will need to change,” stated Mr. Ali Mubarak, the Chief Operations Officer for CCQ. These many changes have included halving the C-Ring Learning Center in two and building three separate offices inside for the Workforce and Community Development Department, Sponsorship Committee, and the Registrar’s Office. Additionally, ground floor offices have been transformed into classrooms, and the first and second floor lounge areas of C-Ring campus were turned into teaching spaces. West Bay saw similar changes as ground floor offices were vacated by Faculty for administrators and the administration area transformed to house more room for Student Services. “We all have to do our part to ease the strains brought on by the growth of our college,” stated Gregory Twidal, Learning Center Coordinator for CCQ. As the Community College of Qatar enters into its fourth official year in Qatar, accreditation, a third campus, and even more students and Facilitators can be seen looming in the nottoo-distant future.

In this issue you will find articles and photographs from both faculty and students. We are also interested in expanding our team for articles. My vision for the paper is to publish the very best articles and keep faculty and students up to date on happenings in and out of the college. New Department Heads Take Charge With the start of the 2013 - 2014 academic year, three faculty members have been appointed to new positions, including two recently vacated department seats.

ESL Instructor Deborah Ali has been appointed to chair the English Language Center and will preside as administrative lead for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department. In her new position, her focus will include the implementation of the new ESL quarterly semesters, a new approach being taken to advance students through the skill levels of ESL faster. proached last year by the General Directorate of Customs Management, the Community College of Qatar established its first Associate Degree in Applied Science dedicated to the proper instruction and training for the English language and customs management. Representatives of CCQ’s Administration traveled to the University of Canberra (UC), Australia to meet with delegates of Canberra’s Center for Customs and Excise Studies (CCES) to formulate a customs program. “The General Directorate of Customs wanted a program that would not only serve the State of Qatar, but also serve customs authorities throughout the Gulf and around the world,” stated CCQ President, Professor Ibrahim Saleh Al-Naimi. Senior Customs officials along with Dr. Abdulnassir Al-Tamimi, the Associate Dean of Workforce and Commu-

nity Development and former Dean Butch Herod traveled to Canberra to meet with Professor David Widdowson, Director and Chief Executive Officer of UC’s CCES Program in order to establish the program and partnership. To continue this partnership CCQ has recently hired Professor Jamal Olaimat to come to CCQ as CCES’s Regional Manager for the Middle East. Professor Olaimat was the first Jordanian to graduate from the University’s Custom program and holds a Master’s Degree in International Customs Law and Administration. He has more than 20 years of experience in customs related matters having worked for the Customs Department in Amman, Jordon as well as a number of American installations in the country. Professor Olaimat will be teaming

up with veteran CCQ Professors BJ Jumnadass and Sergio Santillano, who taught the Customs students last year. “As a Professor, I find it important to see how this program has grown since the beginning,” stated Professor Jumnadass. “We started at Level 1 and now are at Level 4. We are given a chance to discuss important matters through the Advisory Board, which is important.” The Customs management Advisory Board met with Professor David Widdowson, on September 9th to discuss steps to improve the program. Proposals made include making specific course credit transferable to Qatar University should students wish to transfer in the future and the creation of a separate building for future training. A total of 77 students are currently enrolled in the Customs management program for the Fall 2013 term.

CCES has partnered with a number of educational institutions around the world to jointly develop and deliver programs that meet the requirements of the World Customs Organization. And while several countries in the MENA region have been seeking to introduce these specialised programs, Qatar is the first to make it happen. When our discussions first started, CCES was not familiar with CCQ, and CCQ was unaware of us. I can now say with confidence that we are extremely happy to be partnering with an educational institution that prides itself on setting and maintaining such high academic standards. Indeed, the high regard in which CCQ is held internationally and the quality of its educational programs and faculty made our decision to partner with CCQ an easy one.

As more and more online educational websites appear to be adopting badges to mark completion of scholarly work, this new system is

being heralded by some as a 21st century challenger to the “dominant paradigm” diplomas hold over the field of academia. Institutions, employers, and students can view these badges via a Faculty member’s online profile and understand what professional accomplishments he or she has achieved. While the debate over the validity of online education persists, many young professionals are beginning to recognize the worth of online educational systems and are working to dispel myths that courses taught online are not equal to the educational standards placed on physical classrooms. One badge-based system, Smarterer, tests user’s abilities via multiple

choice questions to determine specific skills sets. More than 500 badges are available including computer based programs such as Photoshop, Powerpoint, Java Script, and Excel. Used to signify competency, badges can indicate to prospective employers the level of abilities a Faculty member possesses without needing to see his or her standard CV or portfolio. As the electrical environment continues to evolve, so must professionals who wish to continue developing their skills and achieve new ranks among their peers. Computers weren’t always necessary in the academic field before, but as decades pass and new technological advances came, humanity as a whole must decide how to change with it or risk being left in the dark ages. by Gregory Twidal

Qatar has recently been accepted into the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation) and in order to keep their status they need to meet strict regulations. The Qatar Olympic Committee along with the QIIHL are making this happen. The Qatar Oryx (Qatar’s National Ice Hockey Team) opened the scoring to make it 1-0. The CNA-Q Breakers then scored 2 goals and led 2-1 going into the final period. The Oryx thought they had tied it up with 10 minutes left to go in the game but the goal was disallowed after it was deemed by the referee that the whistle had gone before the puck crossed the goal line. Then, in the final 3 minutes of the game, the Oryx tied it up at 2 all. It was a spirited affair with each team walking away with 1 point.

As part of a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) and the Community College Qatar (CCQ), a new career-focused internship program was recently launched for nine of the CCQ students that graduated this May 2013. The program will connect the students with subject matter experts from QAPCO and enable the students to experience working in a range of different occupations. The program consisted of a rotational schedule whereby all the students spent quality time in each Support Department with the objective of discovering the roles and responsibilities of each Department as well has how these activities fit into the QAPCO organization. The students were also assigned job tasks and were evaluated each week on how they performed. Dr. Mohamed Al Mulla, QAPCO’s VC & CEO stated “We believe that internships are an essential part of talent attraction. Our Student Internship Program aims to attract high caliber

candidates to work in the Industry. It is a program for highly-motivated students to gain real life working experience and to get a taste of our working culture. We hope that all the students from CCQ will benefit from the diversity of opportunities they have experienced at QAPCO and hope that some, if not all will think about joining the company on our excellent Scholarship program.” Dr Ibrahim Al-Naimi, President of CCQ thanked Dr. Al Mulla and QAPCO for establishing this Internship and for hosting our graduates, “This program will engage our students in a new way, and provide them with real opportunities for practical job experience. This program will also prepare our students for further study or for a career in Industry. I am pleased to see this program in action and proud of the collaboration between CCQ & QAPCO.” He said. Maryam Khalfan Al Bulushi and Alreem Ahmad Al Menhali described the Internship as “A wonderful profes-

sional learning experience - because of this internship, I gained more of an interest in the Petrochemical Industry and work in general. I enjoyed the interaction with the QAPCO family and am very thankful for this opportunity and their time.” When asked if she would recommend this internship to future students, Alreem replied, “Yes, definitely! I had a great time and learned a lot from this experience. It has also helped me with my studies as I am now familiar with how a large organization such as QAPCO works.” The other students who participated in the program were Sara Al Emadi, Reem Al Enazi, Fatma Thani Al Haddad, Eiman Mohammed Hussain, Muna Jaber Al Meraizeq, Noora Rashid Sultan Al Mazruei and Mohamed Ahmed Al Bulushi. At the end of the program all the students will receive a Certificate of Achievement at a special ceremony to be held at the new 5 star QAPCO Sports and Health Club that was recently opened in Messaied.

Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) Q.S.C. is a Qatar-based company established in 1974 and is a joint venture between Industries Qatar (80%) and Total Petrochemicals (20%). The company is currently one of the largest producers of low density polyethylene (LDPE) in the region besides producing ethylene, sulphur and other petrochemical products. For instance, plastic bottles can be recycled to produce new plastic bottles or other products. As an example, a winter jacket can be produced out of 35 water bottles. Waste Not, Want Not Over the last year, CCQ has taken steps to improve the conservation of its resources, including the use of paper recycling bins and enacting new policies regarding used books.

The Community College has instituted new changes to its printing policies to reduce the consumption of paper and ink. This decision was made by CCQ’s new Chief Operations Officer Mr. Ali M Mubarak. “Together we can make changes in our organization for a better environment,” Mr. Mubarak stated in a mass e-mail. From now on, the large multi-purpose Bizhub Printers located throughout campus will only print in black ink and documents with multiple pages will be printed front to back when given printing orders from student-used computers. The Bizhub printers, produced by Konica Minolta,

AHF was established in Spring of Semester 2013 by Faculty Advisor Anthony Tycer and Department Chair Tracey Crowe to encourage and recognize academic excellence at the Community College of Qatar, West Bay Campus.

Composed of 15 stalwart members it is a growing fraternity as more students reach the 3.0 GPA standard for joining.

The Academic Honors Fraternity has a service requirement to assist West Bay students who may be struggling academically and those seeking additional assistance to meet their educational goals. This is modeled after the idea “Peer Assisted Learning.” Mem-

bers have a service commitment to be available one hour a week to assist in subjects such as reading, writing and grammar with a special emphasis to develop vocabulary and conversation skills. There is a limit of 2 students per mentor’s hour to insure personal attention is paid to those involved. The Academic Honors Fraternity meets twice a month with one meeting devoted to fun as well as educationally related events. Recently, the AHF was involved with the screening of two historically accurate, Academy Award winning movies: “The King’s Speech” and “Lincoln.” Both screenings were well received by attending students, faculty and staff. by Anthony Tycer

New Technology To Replace Old Ways A new HR Time and Attendance system has been put into effect at CCQ.

Employees who sign-in will need to use the new Actatek Biometric Fingerprint terminals to register each time they come to work as part of a new attendance tracking program. Fingerprint recognition panels are visible on the ground and second floor of C-Ring. ACTAtek, advertising simple solutions to security, regulation, and compliance needs, is an American company with over ten years of experience in biometric and card based physical access solutions. Now in its third generation, these Actatek units are built on field-tested platforms of former generations while incorporating the latest advancements in biometric scanners, card assessment, and network appliance technologies. Each connects to a simple web-based administration console, which records when an employee signs in and out.

When initiated, employees will have to put in their specific identification number and press one of the three fingers they have registered against the console unit each time they clockin and out of work. Many companies throughout the country use similar technology to ensure employees are keeping in compliance of attendance expectations. This is among many new systems being implemented at CCQ including the use of Q-Matic teller systems for registration and electronic locks for secure rooms on C-Ring campus.

Friends play an important role in life. They are there to comfort, laugh and help you to make it through the day. Wherever I go, there must be at least one friend I’m good with to go with me. Friends are always around, but to make good friends, you should spend more time mingling with strangers, being reliable and learning to listen. If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. Volunteering is a great way to get to know new people. By working together you can create a friendship. You might meet others who have a passion for changing and improving things that you used to do. You can join clubs,

If you and your friend agree to meet somewhere, don`t be late. Be reliable and don’t stand them up. If you are not going to make it on time or make it at all, call them as soon as you realize it. Don`t make them wait for you unexpectedly; it`s rude, and it is not a good way to build friendship. When you say you`ll do something, do it. Be someone that people know they can count on.
