Holistic offering for job seekers Salvos ramp up local support
THE recently launched St Marys Salvation Army Employment Connect Hub has opened its door to jobseekers offering a plethora of services leading to better opportunities.
Located at 216 Queen Street, employment support staff will provide a range of core programs for jobseekers’ connections, job application assistance and skills training.
The new site was officially launched by the NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car.
As one of Australia’s leading philanthropic organisations, the Salvos Employment Plus offers support services such as pathways to alcohol and drugs support program, access to the food pantry and clothing, Moneycare financial counseling, literacy services and practical life support and guidance from professional staff.
Employment Plus needed a new site easily accessible to jobseekers in the suburb and nearby and found the new site suitable for its extensive range of services, Employment Plus said national director Graeme White said.
“Our existing spot, also on Queen Street, was not super easy to find, had some steep stairs at entry and could only house our staff,” Mr White said.
“The St Marys community faces its fair share of social challenges and these can significantly impede a person’s chance to find regular work and become financially independent.
“The Salvation Army with this ideal site from which to provide both employment and extensive community support services in a truly holistic offering.”
It’s not the first time Employment Plus has co-located with other Salvation Army services, but Mr White said it was a unique “greenfield” site to offer a depth of services to job seekers.
The new Salvo site will be taking at least 800 jobseekers from the locality and nearby suburbs.
The Salvation Army Divisional Commander for NSW Kim Haworth said the partnership is already positively impacting more locals.
“The Salvation Army exists to help all members of the community needing support irrespective of employment status,” Ms Haworth said.
“Co-locating EPlus and other services and programs make it easier for those who need our help to access what they need, right when they need it.”
Local organisations that can support job seekers such as mental health support, are also welcome to visit the site on a regular casual basis, Ms Haworth said.

Bushfire season mental health concerns CEO urges people to seek support
WENTWORTH Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, is encouraging the community to prepare their mental wellbeing, as well as their homes, for the upcoming bushfire season.
Wentworth Healthcare CEO, Lizz Reay, said that while this upcoming ‘Get Ready’ weekend serves as a crucial time for our community to assess our risk and prepare our homes and properties, it is equally as important to check in and prepare ourselves and our families mentally.
This is particularly relevant for those who have been affected by bushfires in the past.
“We have had a warm and windy start to spring, which may be causing people to be anxious. It’s natural to feel
worried about the upcoming bushfire season and it’s important to acknowledge that these feelings are normal. It can be helpful to talk openly with family and friends and ask for help if needed,” said Ms Reay.
“If you or your family are experiencing unpleasant memories, feelings of sadness, or if you or your family’s stress is overwhelming and starting to interfere with your daily life, then it might be time to seek professional support.”
If you are unsure about what support you may need, Ms Reay suggests talking to your GP.
“GPs can refer patients to services in the area and can also look at other health factors that may be impacting your, or your family’s, overall wellbeing,” she said.
Another option is to call the Head to Health phoneline on 1800 595 212, which helps you to find free or low-cost local mental health support in the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Lithgow and Penrith areas. The service is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am5:00pm, excluding public holidays.
“When you call the phoneline, you will be asked to enter your postcode so you can be transferred to a local mental health professional. These clinicians know our local region and will take the time to listen to your concerns and connect you with the most appropriate
free local service in your area,” Ms Reay said.
In Penrith, the Head to Health Centre provides on-site support and is available for walk-ins at 111 Henry St, Penrith, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (including public holidays), with walkin support available from 1:00pm.
Ms Reay said that it’s also essential to ensure our youth are supported.
"Natural disasters can profoundly affect young people's mental health and heighten their anxiety about future events. Providing accessible, free mental health services is essential in helping them process their experiences, alleviate their fears, and foster resilience in the face of uncertainty."
Headspace Penrith, located at 606 High Street, Penrith, provides free early intervention support to young people aged 12-25 years across mental health, physical health, work and study, and alcohol and other drug needs. Young people can walk-in during their opening hours, Monday-Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm. No appointment or referral is needed.
“By integrating mental health into our preparedness efforts, we can ensure that we are not only physically ready for the bushfire season but also supported through it,” said Ms Reay.
Upgrade for popular Hills playground Elevating infrastructure for all
HE Hills Shire Council is set to kick off a $2M upgrade and extension at the much-loved Livvi's Place all-abilities playground at Bernie Mullane Reserve in Kellyville.
This revamp aims to transform the area into an all-inclusive recreation space, providing cutting-edge play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities.
The playground extension will introduce a variety of new features, including an accessible multi-activity play tower, a double flying fox, slides, a climbing net and swings designed for both toddlers and older children.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of an accessible amenities building, complete with a 'Changing Places' room, with an overhead hoist, shower, toilet, and ambulant unisex cubicles.
The upgrades will also encompass shade sails, picnic shelters, a dry creek bed, accessible park furniture and wide pathways, ensuring a welcoming environment for everyone.
The Livvi's Place Playground Extension Project is proudly funded by the NSW Government's Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants (WSIG) Program in partnership with Council. \
The WSIG Program will deliver $2B of transformational infrastructure across Western Sydney – with $1.1M going towards the Livvi’s Place project.
Mayor of The Hills Shire Council, Dr Peter Gangemi, said the joint funding is elevating local infrastructure and nurturing an inclusive community within The Hills Shire.
“I believe Livvi’s Place is our best playground in The Hills and this upgrade will make the location even better for our residents," Mayor Gangemi said.
"This playground has been a much-loved space for our families, and this grant will allow us to enhance
and expand it even further. I want to thank the NSW Government for helping us create even more opportunities for play.
"We're proud to provide a place where children of all ages and abilities can have fun, and I hope this facility continues to bring joy to our community for generations to come."
The playground will be partially closed starting mid-September 2024.
Some areas of the current playground outside the construction zone will need to be closed off periodically for the work to be completed.
However, Council aims to minimise the impact on visitors' enjoyment by keeping parts of the existing play
areas, including the water play area, open for as much time as possible during the construction period.
For those seeking alternative play areas during the closure, nearby facilities include Samantha Riley Drive Reserve playground, Golden Grove Reserve, Duncraig Drive Reserve, and Ted Pike Reserve, all within 800 metres of Livvi's Place Playground.
An alternative water park is available at Waves Fitness and Aquatic Centre in Baulkham Hills.
To learn more about this project and to follow construction updates, visit The Hills Shire Council’s website, www.thehills. nsw.gov.au and search “Livvi’s Place Playground Extension –Bernie Mullane Reserve Kellyville’.
Contiki’s new take on tertiary education Seeing the world on a budget
ELIZABETH FRIAS
JESS Schweizer of Emu Plains NSW loves to travel overseas but felt pressured as her median income has been whittled away by rising cost of living.
Searching for overseas holidays that won’t break the bank she came across Contiki University’s youth travel education advertisement.
The advertisement sounded interesting, according to Ms Schweizer, as it sought Gen Z and Millennials to apply as international students and learn about the history of countries, such as Greece and study on campus there.
The tourist aka student goes on a thrilling island hopping across the glimmering oceans at Mykonos and Santorini.
If she wants to do Major in European Studies, Ms Schweizer could go on Contiki University’s European Trail and get a crash course while touring 12 countries in 23 days.
A Major in Temple Architecture is an adventure tour of Thailand, Laos and Cambodia with a much wider map to navigate while discovering an ancient Asian culture.
Contiki’s educational travel campaign wasn’t intending to discourage formal tertiary studies, but rather to provide young Aussies feeling the budget pinch with ways to fulfill their dream overseas holidays.
“We’re not telling people to skip their studies however we are encouraging young Aussies to get out there and view education from a new perspective,” Contiki managing director Toni Ambler said.
“There is no better way to learn about history, culture, or even yourself, than by experiencing it and the world firsthand.”
A Contiki study has revealed that 54 percent of Gen Z and Millennials in NSW are putting the brakes on travel due to increasing costs of living, and 35 percent of them feel guilty using annual leave for fear of losing their jobs.
Ms Schweizer said she was fortunate to still be living with her parents and she was able to set aside money from her salary to go on a Contiki University tour.
“I earn a mid-weight salary between $60K to $80k a year, and half of it goes towards savings for traveling, and only recently started saving for a future investment property,” Ms Schweizer said.
“I also have personal bills such as finance, phone,
board, gym, and groceries, which limits how often I’m able to travel.”
Ms Schweizer graduated with a Bachelor of Business degree majoring in human resources and enrolled with Contiki University’s New Zealand and the South Sea Islands History and felt it was “an amazing experience.”
“I gained heaps of knowledge about the country that I wouldn’t have been able to receive had I not gone through Contiki for my trip which was amazing,” Ms Schweizer said.
Eight courses to take student travellers to countries such as Europe, Croatia, South Korea, Africa and Mexico are now available for enrolment at Contiki University.

SYDNEY ZOO
On Thursday, 2nd May 2024, our participants embarked on an exciting trip to Sydney Zoo. Despite the rain and cold weather, they were determined to go and made the best of the day. Did you know that Sydney Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals, including many awe-inspiring and endangered species from around the world? Our participants explored the African Boardwalk, witnessing scenes from the savannah in remarkable mixed-species habitats. They also wandered along the leafy Primate Boulevard and were mesmerised by the diverse animals of Southeast Asia.
They got up close to some of the Australian natives, though the wet weather prevented them from feeding some of the local animals.
DISCO FEVER
Our Activity Centre lit up on Friday night the 21st June, as our participants enjoyed an unforgettable DISCO night! The entire centre transformed into a 70s and 80s disco haven, featuring hits from The Pointer Sisters, Bee Gees, Bon Jovi, Grease, John Farnham, The Monkeys, The Beatles, ABBA, and many more. We danced the night away, reliving our youth with Friday night fever vibes.
Delicious pizzas and drinks added to the fun, and the feedback was fantastic—we all had a blast!
Join our Karaoke groups, call us to find out how?
Interestingly, Sydney Zoo is the only combined zoo and aquarium in NSW, and it boasts the largest Reptile & Nocturnal House in the world! Roslyn made it clear that reptiles are not her favorite, and the sentiment was shared by many of our participants.
GARDEN MAKEOVER
Our garden was long overdue for a revamp, especially after the heavy downpours in May. We were fortunate to have Jason, one of our participants, assist with feedback and research. He helped us determine what we needed to ensure good soil quality, proper drainage, and strategic placement of the garden beds to maximize sunlight on our beautiful balcony.
Media deal for women’s sport
FOOTBALL Australia and Paramount Australia have announced a multi-year agreement, making Network 10 and Paramount+ the exclusive broadcasters of CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos matches in Australia until 2028. This includes major events like the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ and AFC Asian Cup 2027™. The deal ensures 96% of Australian homes can access the games, with at least 50 matches on free-to-air TV. The agreement aims to enhance fan accessibility, boost football’s exposure, and support women’s football.
Boost for super payments to mums
THE Australian Government's decision to legislate superannuation payments on its parental leave scheme will help reduce gender inequity and boost a mother of two’s retirement savings by approximately $14,500. This reform will benefit around 180,000 Australian mothers annually and narrow the gender superannuation gap, which currently stands at $50,000 for those nearing retire-
ment. Super Members Council CEO Misha Schubert urges swift passage of the Bill, highlighting its potential to significantly improve financial security for women and advance gender equity in retirement.
Global pandemic of super bugs
RESEARCHERS warn that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals, particularly in Southeast Asia, could lead to a global pandemic of deadly superbugs. A study in
the International Journal of Food Science and Technology highlights the risk posed by overuse of antibiotics in food animals, which can transfer resistant bacteria to humans. The team, including experts from RMIT University, recommends regional collaboration, stronger regulations, public awareness, and innovation in alternative treatments to combat AMR and safeguard public health.
Difficulty giving medicine to pets
ADMINISTERING medications to dogs can be challenging, often straining the pet-owner bond. Many owners struggle with traditional methods, leading to missed doses and stress. A study shows 65% of pet owners face difficulties giving pills, with 29% feeling stressed. Veterinary experts emphasise the importance of stress-free medication routines for managing chronic conditions like skin diseases. Innovations in pet medications, such as palatable treat-like options and long-acting injectables, are making the process easier, ensuring pets receive necessary treatments consistently and improving their overall well-being.
Retirement planning much earlier
AHESTA survey reveals that 49% of Australians aged 18-39 have taken action to plan for retirement, driven by cost-of-living pressures over the past year. This includes salary sacrificing and using online tools to track superannuation. In comparison, 44% of those aged 40-54 and 29% of
those 55-plus have taken similar steps. The survey highlights growing awareness among younger Australians about the importance of superannuation for long-term financial security, with running out of money being their top retirement concern.
Our unpaid super bill tops $5B
ANEW report reveals that Australia's unpaid superannuation issue, costing $5B annually, is worsening, depriving millions of workers of crucial retirement savings. The Super Members Council (SMC) urges urgent legislative reform to mandate super payments on payday and strengthen ATO compliance. With $41.6B in unpaid super over nine years, vulnerable groups like women and young workers are most affected. The government has pledged reforms by 2026, but swift action is needed to ensure timely and full super payments.

HCF CEO Sheena Jack highlighted the partnership's role in driving societal change and improving longterm health through education. The initiative also involves HCF employees volunteering, emphasizing HCF's commitment to building healthier, more equitable communities across Australia.

Astonishingly, unlike many other songwriters with similar intentions, Helen has found the discipline to do it.
Her new single, “As the Weather
Turns”, was written the day after the death of a close friend, who died after of having to make a terrible and impossible choice between her unborn baby and treatment for a disease discovered while she was pregnant.
It’s a painful subject that could have led to maudlin music, but Helen isn’t afraid to tackle dark and devastating subjects and shape them into what is becoming her trademark –light-lled, soaring, catchy songs full of hope that deeply connect, move and linger with you. It’s a magical recipe that makes As The Weather Turns striking and memorable – and somehow both deeply affecting and uplifting.
Helen likes to confront the tough things life throws her way. She calls it as an “optimistic challenge”.
She has wrestled with her own mental health, having experienced post-natal depression with the birth of her second child, and for many years struggled with feelings of failure, anxiety and procrastination stemming from undiagnosed ADHD.
During the period of writing these songs, she dealt with overwhelming grief after losing four people close to her in quick succession – two grandparents, her friend and then her father.
She also lives with the anxiety disorder demophobia – a fear of crowds and crowded places – which puts her much more at ease onstage than she feels sitting or standing in the audience at a show.
Her writing routine is a way of facing her mental health challenges and seeking to overcome them.

song-writing output has improved too.
In the past, Helen has referred to herself a “geek with a keyboard” and summed her music up self-deprecatingly as “Suburban indie piano pop songs that will make you laugh, cry and dance”. Yet, as time rolls on, the songs well up and ow out and her song-writing craft deepens, such modest words increasingly fail to convey the full weight of her quietly brewing talent.
She has released two EPs to date –Flesh (2012) and Oneiro (2013) – and four singles – Mirrors & Windows (2015), Be There (2016), Our House Is On Fire (2019), and Crown (2023), which have attracted high praise for her song writing and performance talent from reviewers in Australia and overseas.
For her debut album, “Remove This Shield”, (released August 2, 2024), Helen collaborated with producer and fellow multi-instrumentalist Josh Schuberth. Between
the two of them, they played all the instruments on the recording. It was a smooth process and they captured superb performances.
Recorded over a three-year period from 2015 to 2018, the album is a collection of 10 songs picked by Helen and Josh from a shortlist of around 35 of the more than 500 songs she has written.
As well as being a singer-songwriter, Helen is also a passionate music teacher. She runs an award-winning school in Western Sydney teaching vocals, piano, composition and songwriting to children and adults and has Won the Yamaha Piano Teacher Award: Breakout twice (2024 and 2021). Her recent 2024 prize included the thrilling opportunity to spend time in Melbourne with one of her heroes, Tim Minchin.
The songwriting approach she takes – and teaches – has seen her become a kind of songwriting motivational speaker and advocate for music education, and made her a popular speaker at music education conferences and webinars.
She has been interviewed by Christine Anu on ABC Radio about her songwriting craft. She has presented talks on Engaging Teen Students Through Songwriting for Yamaha, written for The Piano Teacher Magazine and the Yamaha website. This month she presented at the Australian Piano Pedagogy Conference in Melbourne. In 2012, she gave a TEDx Talk in Canberra on songwriting and mental health and proposed a challenge to her audience: Helen Perris’ album “Release This Shield” is out now independently on Bandcamp and across all digital and streaming platforms, with limited CDs available from Helen’s Bandcamp Music page.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH of the Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly
Western Sydney is an incredibly diverse region, home to 1,080,817 people with 57%1 of the region using a language other than English at home. The region is also home to one of the largest urban populations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia.
In 2023, WentWest ran two Citizens’ Juries to find out what matters to our community. The goal of this process was to better understand health and social care priorities, so we can focus our investments on what really matters to people in our region.
At the conclusion of the event, the jury members were advised that their recommendations would guide WentWest’s future investments in Western Sydney. To make sure the Citizens’ Juries have a lasting impact, WentWest promised to work with jury members to design a permanent model.
On Wednesday 17 July 2024, we officially launched our Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly. The Assembly members shared their experience, learnings and joint recommendations for spending on health in Western Sydney. The main takeaway from their presentations was the focus on prevention of disease and the need to invest accordingly.
Each of the members of the Assembly bring a different perspective and represent a different cultural background and are united in their desire to improve health outcomes for all members of our region.

Healthy Western Sydney is delivered by WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health Network.
What Does This Mean for Community in Western Sydney?
The Western Sydney Citizens’ Assembly, which represents a cross-section of our region, will meet monthly for the first year.
The aim of these regular meetings includes:
9 Promoting better connections between health and social care.
9 Tracking the implementation of the health and social care priority recommendations made by the juries.
9 Demonstrating meaningful allyship between First Nations and other culturally and linguistically diverse communities in Western Sydney.

Incredible Mexican Street style food
YOU can’t go past Costa Taco for great lunch or dinner, there are 3 stores spread across the North Coast and Gold Coast region - Byron Bay, Palm Beach or Burleigh Heads. With Mexican food there is ho-hum tacos and there is great tacos...what this brand is doing well is a deliciously fresh menu with local produce and spaces that have a cool, clean Mexican vibe.
Locally grown limes, chilli, avocado and corn pop in your mouth with freshness. The servings are a generous size
Tand we just couldn’t finish our food. Our favourite was the ‘Gringo Nachos’ (Aussie style with the lot) and the street-style soft tacos - beef, pork, Sinaloa chicken and local snapper were hard to beat.
Broadbeach QLD is their newest location to open just at the end of August and co-owners Matt and Nick explain “We’re creating a space where the energy of Mexico meets Australian beach culture”.
Costa Taco’s management style might also explain the success and good vibes of their
stores as Byron Bay staff speak glowingly and happily of the freedom to work to the best of their ability and it really shows.
Pop into Costa Taco at all 3 locations when you’re up the coast. www.costataco.com

Yeeros Shop, Annandale’s newest addition
HE Yeeros Shop offers authentic Greek cuisine with a fun community atmosphere, culturally resonant of the glory days in Greece where tales are swapped between locals over fresh souvlaki on the side streets or in the local taverna.
We sampled The Yeeros Shop menu the night the heavens opened with a deluge of rain as we arrived on Annandale’s tree lined Johnston Street, beautifully wrapped in fairy lights. This typical Sydney deluge was quickly traded for the soothing aroma of roasted meats, paprika and delicious hand-cut Greek chips.
Guided by the friendly and proud proprietor Kostas, we opted for the succulent Chicken Souvlaki plate and Yeeros Lamb, aptly accompanied by

homemade hummus, haloumi and a generous serve of their secret garlic sauce, fresh pita and the best Greek Salad I’ve had in years.
The sister venue, Fat Fish, is located just next door where an 81-year-old lady makes daily a generations-old rice pudding that is indescribably delicious. We took two home and warmed our bellies and hearts with these creamy cinnamon treats. Conveniently located, The Yeeros Shop provides outdoor tables adjacent to plenty of public seating. I’ll be back in summer with our kids for the ‘Yeeros Family Pack’ and the relaxed vibe. Great for parents ready for a night off cooking. Your tribe won’t leave hungry.

white kitchen with black sink and tapware, a toilet and shower with black tapware and plenty of cupboard spaces to fit clothing, toiletries and food for your stay. You name it, they’ve thought of it – kettle, toaster, cutlery, comfy double bed already made up with doona, pillows and towels.
Slide open the door and go for a swim at every different beach up and down the coast. Sit out in the sunshine on camp chairs that come with the RV, you don’t need to bring much. It’s great way to celebrate a special birthday weekend or just get out of the rat race for a while and press the reset button on life.
The benefit of hiring an RV instead of staying in one spot is that it gets you instantly mobile in the local area so you can explore the gorgeous beaches and hinterland. You have freedom to choose, something a little different to a rental car/ hotel combo.
The RV is easy to reverse and pull up into car parking spots and smooth to drive and easy fill up with diesel and that’s a big consideration as the idea of all that can be daunting but this is Star RV - spearheading luxe motorhome driving 2024/ 2025.
