NEW ERA OF OVER 60s LIVING Lifestyle enriched with freedom

THE makers of Halcyon Gables are casting an enticing vision for over 60’s living through aspirational design and quality facilities.

Halcyon Gables was conceptualised to provide an aspirational lifestyle enriched with fun, friendship and freedom for each homeowner. Key to this exciting, first of its kind development from Stockland in NSW, are the facilities and shared spaces that connect and nurture the community.

Positioned in the Hills’ District, just a short walk to the future Stockland Gables Town Centre and lake, Halcyon Gables provides great access to Greater Sydney and day-to-day amenities. But with so much on offer on-site, homeowners may choose to stay within the gated community often.

The meandering streets and connected walkways create a neighbourhood feel that builds towards a resort style Lodge and multiple lifestyle precincts.

When speaking about the conceptualisation of Halcyon Gables’ facilities, Architect Adam Beck of BDA Architecture, said that he and his team ‘approached the design to have a heart and a hub’ that would anchor the community for years to come.

Taking inspiration from the beautiful landscape of the Hills’ District, Adam describes the exterior aesthetic

as having a ‘beautiful expression in the architecture and the built form of the location in which it is set’.

From the striking gabled roof to the sandstone facades and established native trees that have been left in place, to the orientation of the buildings to provide breathtaking views, each design decision is intentional and combines to create a distinct sense of place.

When asked about the facilities at Halcyon Gables, Project Director Ken Franklin explained that “whether you’re coming from one side of the

community or the other, you will have a shortcut there, whichever facility that you want to use and enjoy”.

As such, the four lifestyle precincts (Entertainment, Health & Wellness, Creative and Sporting) are separate, yet seamlessly connected to encourage regular use and create opportunities for organic interactions and connections.

Inside, interiors have been carefully designed both for aesthetic and function. When interviewed about the project, Halcyon Gables Interior Designer Charlotte Correard of Pike Withers, shared that while each precinct was a

“communal facility, they were also an extension of each owner's home”.

Expanding on their shared vision for Halcyon Gables, Pike Withers Director Amanda Pike said that they were intent on “incorporating the surroundings” while achieving a “boutique hotel feel” to create community spaces that homeowners “would be proud to bring family and friends”.

As a result, each community precinct perfectly combines quality, function and comfort. Spaces ebb and flow and evolve as homeowners and guests move through them, with grand rooms and clusters of cosy corners providing options to encourage usage - all elevated by aspirational yet welcoming colours, finishes and furnishings.

At the heart of The Lodge is a striking sandstone fireplace that symbolises the heart of the community and provides the perfect place for homeowners and guests to meet, gather and connect.

From inside to out, Halcyon Gables is a community that perfectly blends aspirational aesthetics with day-to-day function to inspire the evolution of a thriving over 60’s community.

Alternatives to visiting your local GP

WENTWORTH Healthcare, the provider of the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network, is reminding the community that the hospital is not the only option when your doctor is closed over the upcoming Easter and Anzac Day public holidays.

Wentworth Healthcare CEO, Lizz Reay, said that after hours or urgent care services offer an important alternative to the emergency department for urgent, but not life-threatening, injuries or illnesses, and in cases where your regular GP may not be open.

“If you or your family needs medical assistance over the upcoming public holidays, there are a range of options available. Our www.doctorclosed. com.au website can help residents to search for a GP who is open after hours, for doctors who can make home visits or for your closest Urgent Care Clinic.

"You can also use the online symptom checker, find pharmacies that are open, or talk to a health professional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling the healthdirect helpline on 1800 022 222,” said Ms Reay.

Ms Reay said that the Doctor Closed website is accessible for multicultural communities, with translated pages in six different languages.

In the Penrith area, the Medicare Urgent Care Clinic located inside Our Medical, at 2227 Wolseley Street near Penrith Homemaker Centre, is bulk-billed and open for walk-ins without

OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE

the need for an appointment from 8:00am to 8:00pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year, including Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday and Anzac Day.

The Clinic can treat those with urgent but non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries, such as closed fractures, injuries requiring stitching, minor burns, leg ulcers, gastro, or conditions requiring IV rehydration, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract conditions, ear, nose and throat infections, rashes, small abscess drainage and more.

The Penrith After Hours Doctors located at Nepean Village Shopping Centre provides another walk-in option, and is open Monday to Friday, 6:00pm to midnight, and on weekends and public holidays, 3:00pm to midnight.

The Penrith 24 Hour Pharmacy located at 438 High Street, is open 24 hours, 365 days of the year for those needing urgent medications.

In addition to these services, Ms Reay mentioned that if you or someone you know are experiencing mental health concerns or crisis, the Penrith Medicare Mental Health Centre located at 111 Henry Street, is open seven days per week, 365 days a year, including public holidays.

Services are free without the need for a Medicare card, prior appointment or referral. The centre's opening hours are 1:00pm - 9:30pm (Monday, Wednesday – Sunday) and from 1:00pm - 5:00pm on Tuesdays, and from

1:00pm – 9:30pm on public holidays.

In the Hawkesbury area, the North Richmond Urgent Care Service is open 365 days a year, including Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday and Anzac Day, from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

“To access the service, people need to call healthdirect on 1800 022 222. A registered nurse will assess your condition and then refer you to the best place for your needs. This may include an inperson appointment at the North Richmond Urgent Care Service, a telehealth appointment with the virtualKIDS or virtualGP services, or escalating your care to NSW Ambulance if required,” said Ms Reay.

The North Richmond Urgent Care Service provides access to GPs and nurses who can treat a range of illnesses and injuries that are deemed urgent, but not life-threatening, such as minor wounds that need stiches, suspected broken bones and skin infections that need antibiotics. All services are free for Medicare Card holders.

STORY OF OUR MATILDAS…

From humble beginnings in GWS

„ JANAKAN SEEMAMPILLA

THE 1975 Matildas led by former Western Sydney local Pat O’Connor, have been officially capped, 50 years after their historic performance at the inaugural Asian Cup in Hong Kong, where they won Bronze.

The tournament was called the AFC Women's Championships and is now recognised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA - the games governing bodies in Asia and the world respectivelyas the first Asian Cup.

The 16-member squad led by O’Connor, who started her footballing career at the age of 26 at Bass Hill RSL, were coached by her husband Joe O’Connor.

Only three members of that 1975 team went on to be capped in later years, but they have now been joined on the Matildas' honour roll by the remaining 13 players from that squad.

The tournament was initially supposed to be for club teams only but later became a tournament of nations and was branded as the AFC Women’s Championships, now known as the Asian Cup.

All the other five countries involved - Hong Kong, Thailand, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singaporehave capped their players from this event. The AFC and FIFA wouldn’t have recognised the event as the first Asian Cup if the teams participating weren’t national team representatives.

There are a few dissenting voices who don’t believe this team should be capped as Matildas, however while their argument may have some merit, there is compelling evidence to indicate this 1975 team should be acknowledged as the first Matildas.

The team was endorsed by the Australian Soccer Federation (ASF), who was the only Australian governing body recognised by FIFA at the time. The ASF President Sir Arthur George allowed the 1975 team to where Green & Gold and have the Australian crest on their jerseys. They were referred to as the “Australian XI”.

At the event in Hong Kong, this team was called Australia and has been referred to as such in all formal publications for the event over the last 50 years.

Origins of the nickname

The “Matildas” nickname didn’t come into existence until 1995, when Australia played its first ever World Cup. In the 1970s there was no formal nickname for the team.

The strongest argument against this 1975 team is that the players mainly came from the St George Budapest team and all the players were from NSW. However, there was no formal national team selection process that existed until 1974, nor was one utilised in 1975 for the purpose of selecting a national team.

After the inaugural 1974 Australian Women’s National Championships, it was resolved to pick an Australian team or “All Stars” team at future events. This process was only first used to pick a national team in 1978 when Australia sent a team to Taiwan for the World Women’s Invitational.

The 1975 Australian Women’s National Championships started after the 1975 Asian Cup, so when the All Stars team was named in 1975 (for the first time), it was well after the Australian team had commenced the Asian Cup in Hong Kong. The 1975 Asian Cup started on 25 August 1975.

The 1975 Australian National Women’s Championships, started on August 29 and finished 2 September, so any All Star team from that event would have been named well after the Asian Cup had started. Incidentally that event was held in Brisbane with WA winning. So, while it is acknowledged that no proper national team selection process was used in 1975, invitations were sent to other States to send representatives to try out for the team, but none took up the offer as they were preparing for the 1975 Australian Women’s National Championships.

Many players from that era claim to not have received an invitation, however it’s likely the invitations went to their States’ governing bodies and not to individual players. It’s unclear if the States forwarded an invitation to the players.

One thing is for certain though, the 1975 team was certainly well credentialed in terms of footballing merit. Most of the team represented the NSW team that dominated the 1974 Australian Women’s National Championships. Many believed if they played at the 1975 Australian Women’s National Championships, NSW would have won easily.

Also, St George had won five NSW Metropolitan Ladies Soccer Association titles in a row at that point from 1970 to 1975 and would go onto win two more in 1976 and 1977. Many of these players also played for Sydney Prague who won three titles in a row from 1967 to 1969.

It is also understood a trial was held at Wentworth Park in Sydney to help pick the 1975 team, which was a form of selection process, albeit not a formal one.

Trial was held at Wentworth Park

The 1978 Australian team who went to Taiwan was mainly from NSW and WA, with only two players from that 16-player squad coming from outside those states. Since NSW and WA played off in the 1978 Australian National Women’s Championships, this makes sense. However, the 1975 team can also justify their selection by saying NSW dominated the 1974 Australian Women’s National Championships and would have likely done the same in 1975 had most of their players not been in Hong Kong.

The 1979 Matildas, who are currently recognised as the first Australian team to play A Internationals, only had only two Victorians in their 16-player squad despite Victoria winning that year’s Australian Women’s National Championships. While the winning team doesn’t necessarily have to have the best players, many Victorians would have argued that more should have been picked.

The 1922 Socceroos - our first official Socceroos team - was made up of eight players from NSW and eight from Queensland per an agreement made prior to their tour of New Zealand. So, while a selection process may have existed for this team, it certainly can’t be said that it was a fair or merit-based process.

There have also been suggestions that because

the 1975 Asian Cup did not have 90-minute games, it wasn’t a proper tournament. This is an irrelevant argument since many FIFA recognised A internationals were not played for 90 minutes either, or in fact the first ever Women’s World Cup in 1991 consisted of games that only went for 80 minutes. Australia did not qualify for that event.

Team that wasn’t recognised

Also, the Oceania Women’s Championships which Australia took part in during the 1980s only had games that went for 70 minutes.

Those upset about the 1975 team being capped claim a can of worms is now being opened and that other touring teams from Australia that visited foreign countries prior to 1975, now have a claim to be capped. This argument has little credibility since none of those teams played in a FIFA recognised tournament or a FIFA recognized A International.

In 1980, WA sent a team to the Asian Cup, but this team isn’t being recognised as Matildas. However, the reality is, by the time 1980 came around, there was a formal national team selection process in place for an Australian team, unlike in 1975. The 1980 WA team wasn’t picked using this selection process, meaning they can’t be recognised as Matildas.

There has also been a suggestion that the majority of currently capped Matildas disagree with the 1975ers being recognised. There have been 236 ladies who have been capped officially by the Matildas until now, however there is no clear evidence that most of them disagree with the 1975 team being capped.

It appears the biggest issue is the numbering system used for Matildas caps. Julie Dolan, who was previously recognised as cap one due to playing against New Zealand in 1979, also played in the 1975 team. Now that the 1975 team is being recognised, Dolan will no longer be the first Matilda.

Even those disputing the 1975 team being capped acknowledge this team were pioneers and should get unnumbered caps. It doesn’t seem a major jump from receiving unnumbered caps to numbered ones, indicating that personal egos and agendas are at play.

The 1975 team will all be given caps numbered “01” to reflect the fact they are now the first Matildas.

The Matildas of today.

Return and Earn returns $1.3B in refunds

NSW’s Return and Earn scheme has reached a major milestone, with 13 billion drink containers recycled since its 2017 launch - returning over $1.3B refunds to the community and raising $72M for charities. The program has saved water, energy, and cut emissions, reducing litter by 73%. With over 650 return points statewide, participation is strong, especially in regional areas. The scheme continues to support sustainability, community causes, and the circular economy, turning waste into valuable resources across NSW.

Anxiety disorders during, after pregnancy

RESEARCHERS from UNSW Sydney and the George Institute have launched a five-year study into perinatal intrusions - distressing, vivid thoughts of infant-related harm experienced by most women during and after pregnancy. Often misunderstood and under-researched, these thoughts can lead to anxiety disorders affecting both mother and infant. The study will explore biological, social, and cognitive factors, including hormone sensitivity, to identify those most at risk. The aim is to inform early interventions and improve perinatal mental health outcomes for mothers and their babies.

Aussie super surpasses UK and Canada

AUSTRALIA’S superannuation system is projected to become the world’s second largest by 2031, surpassing the UK and Canada, according to the Super Members Council. With $4.1 trillion in assets, the system is growing twice as fast as global peers, reducing reliance on the Age Pension and easing pressure on taxpayers. Key policy settings—universal coverage, compulsory contributions, and preservation until retirement - drive its success. A super fund delegation is in the US seeking global investment opportunities to grow members’ retirement savings further.

Sydney confirmed as host for NRL finals

SYDNEY has been confirmed as the host of the 2025 NRL and NRLW Grand Finals, to be held on Sunday 5 October at Accor Stadium. The deal cements Sydney’s status as the home of rugby league, where the Grand Final has traditionally been played. With strong fan interest and the sport’s expansion into global markets, the event will bring major economic and cultural benefits to NSW. It also highlights the city’s growing international profile in major sporting events.

Funds to address wheelchair taxi shortage

THE NSW Government has launched a $15M emergency funding package to address the critical shortage of wheelchair accessible taxis (WATs), which have declined by one-third since 2019. The package includes increased driver incentives, new grants for vehicle costs, and improved driver training. An interest-free loan scheme has also been expanded. This urgent response aims to restore access for people with disability, while a longer-term reform plan is being developed in consultation with the community to ensure sustainable transport services.

Mental health support for first responders

THE NSW Government has launched a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy for first responders, now including forestry, national parks, and transport workers alongside traditional emergency services. The strategy outlines 15 priority actions to improve mental health support, with a focus on accessibility in regional areas. Measures include Psychological First Aid training, clinical care referrals, and peer-support services. This proactive approach ensures all first responders receive tailored, trauma-informed support throughout their careers, promoting long-term wellbeing and workforce sustainability.

Surge in rough sleeping in regional areas

ROUGH sleeping in Australia has surged 22% nationwide since 2020, with a 51% rise in NSWespecially in regional areas - due to a worsening housing crisis. More employed Australians are seeking help, and services are overwhelmed. Rising rents, limited social housing, and funding shortfalls are pushing more people into homelessness. Experts warn urgent action and investment in prevention and housing solutions are needed to address what is now a national homelessness emergency.

Better feedback from breast screening

FROM April 2025, BreastScreen NSW will begin informing women of their breast density to help assess breast cancer risk. Dense breast tissue can make cancer harder to detect on mammograms and is a known risk factor. The change won’t affect appointment times, and women with high density are encouraged to speak with their doctor. Mammograms remain the best screening method, especially for women aged 50–74, with earlier screening advised for Aboriginal women.

Govt invests in keeping youth on track

THE NSW Government is investing over $270,000 in a new partnership with the NRL and PCYC to tackle regional youth crime and build stronger communities. The program will engage young people through events featuring NRL stars, police, and PCYC staff, promoting mental health, fitness, and positive choices. It complements broader crime prevention efforts, including tougher laws and youth mentoring initiatives like Project Pathfinder, aiming to keep young people on track and enhance safety in regional NSW communities.

Councillor demands CEO clean up council

LIVERPOOL Councillor

and former Deputy

Mayor, Peter Ristevski

has called on the newly announced CEO of Liverpool City Council, Jason Breton, to stop the outrageous expenditure and address the dire budget issues created by the big-spending Mayor, Ned Mannoun.

Councillor Ristevski, an award-winning accountant and Director of Investment Plus Accounting Group, said it is a disgrace that the Council sits outside the Office of Local Government benchmarks set in 2023, which sanctioned Liverpool Council for its poor performance.

Mr Breton has been given a mandate to urgently stop the rot and reform this Council basket case,” Councillor Ristevski said.

“We need urgent

steps to be taken to get us back into a balanced budget because we are running millions of dollars in deficits. The new CEO needs to cut wasteful spending and “jobs for the boys” by sacking all the Mayor’s Liberal mates, who are sitting in Council jobs on huge salaries. It’s a disgrace that meanwhile, our residents are being denied basic services.”

“One of these friends of the Mayor, who is in a

cushy, lucrative job is his personal lawyer, who is supposedly his personal assistant. She attends Council meetings, but no one knows why she is there and yet her salary is $300,000. Then we have the Council’s media department, whose job appears to be solely to boost the Mayor’s personal profile.

“The Mayor will have to face the music because he wanted to sell Council assets to hide the budget deficits. He had his eyes on a Council building which would have solved his budget deficit with an injection of $50m. Now, he faces a dilemma because the new Councillors won’t allow him to dig himself out of a hole by selling an asset like that, which is delivering good returns and capital gains.”

Jason Breton appointed Liverpool’s new CEO

Liverpool City Council has appointed Jason Breton as its CEO.

Mayor Ned Mannoun said the appointment – confirmed by a unanimous vote of council – followed an exhaustive process led by an external consultant.

“There were more than 100 applicants for the position, which shows that Liverpool Council is held in high esteem as a preferred place of employment,”

Mayor Mannoun said.

“It says a lot that a boy who grew up on one of the city’s toughest streets - Nagle Street - can then go on to be the CEO of the local Council.

“Jason Breton has been Acting CEO for the last 12 months and

Business Trip To Vietnam

after a lengthy career in the police force, he moved into the private commercial sector and came to his hometown council as its Director of Operations.

“In that time, Mr Breton has amply demonstrated his talent for strategic oversight and staff leadership.

“As Acting CEO, Mr Breton has already brought much needed

improvements to the city, and he now has a solid mandate to bring improvements to the way Council gets things done.”

Mr Breton said he was looking forward to the challenges and rewards of the role.

“Council will be exploring diverse revenue streams, ensuring transparent financial reporting and involve community in budgeting priorities.

“The Council needs to prioritise strategic urban planning that’s future-proof (smart cities, green space, transport), collaborate with state and federal bodies for funding and alignment and seek community consultation on major developments to reduce backlash.”

SMALL BUSINESS CHAMPIONS AWARDS 2025

2025 Australian Small Business Champion Awards

THIS year marks the 27th consecutive year of the Awards which highlight the finest of Australia’s small businesses across the retail, hospitality, services and manufacturing industries.

These businesses drive the economy, support their communities, enrich culture and bring people together.

Over 5,500 entries were received from diverse business sectors located in cities, rural, regional and suburban towns throughout Australia.

The judging process was rigorous and highly competitive with 1,423 finalists selected across 106 categories, each of whom demonstrated why small businesses are so vital to our nation’s prosperity.

The winners were announced at two

spectacular National Gala Presentation Evenings held at The Star Sydney on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 2025. As part of their achievement, the winner of each category received a custom Champions statuette trophy and certificate, along with national recognition as an industry leader.

Steve Loe, Founder of the Australian Small Business Champion Awards and Managing Director of Precedent Productions, shared his admiration for this year’s finalists and winners:

“For 27 years, I have had the pleasure of presenting a program that recognises and rewards hard-working, spirited Australians who grow their businesses from start-ups to industry

leaders. Operating a small business today requires steadfast commitment, leadership, savviness, creativity, people skills, vision, social consciousness and a spirited drive - all elements of success that our independent judging panel pinpointed among the key reasons for their selection of winners.”

“I am immensely proud of the growth of this program and the launching pad it provides to the most deserving small business operators. These people work tirelessly to support their communities, encourage others to strive for success, and inspire us all with their dedication and perseverance” added Mr Loe.

The 2025 Gala Presentation Evenings were a celebration of small business

excellence, with Friday’s event hosted by Nine presenter and journalist Jayne Azzopardi, and Saturday hosted by popular Nine News presenter Peter Overton. Each evening welcomed over 1,000 small business representatives and featured dazzling entertainment in a setting that resembled the “Oscars of Australian Small Business.”

The Awards were supported by Major Partners NOVA Employment, VJB Group, Xcllusive Business Sales, Castaway Forecasting, Big Clean, and Boa.

18 COMMENT - Dr Michelle Byrne

I’M FIGHTING FOR A FAIRER HILLS FUTURE…

Infrastructure crisis as growth rolls on

THE NSW Government has designated the Hills Shire as the fastest growth Council in the state with a target of 23,300 new homes in the next five years.

This means that the number of homes in the Hills will increase from 68,000 to 127,700 over the next 20 years, an additional 59,700 homes and an 88% surge in housing. By 2041 our population is predicted to be over 328,600, an increase of 71%!

The Hills understands the role it needs to play in delivering in housing in NSW. However, the area is buckling under the pressure of an infrastructure crisis which threatens the future of the Hills we know and love.

For residents in the Hills, they are over the overdevelopment and the lack of infrastructure. They moved to the Hills because of the wonderful lifestyle that is on offer here. Instead, they now find themselves spending more and more valuable time sitting in their cars on congested roads trying to access work, school, medical services and shopping centres: time better spent with family and friends.

Windsor Road and Old Windsor Road, which are State arterial roads that run straight through the heart of the NSW Government’s Northwest Priority Growth Area. These State arterial roads service not just residents from the Hills, Blacktown and Hawkesbury but also business owners and employees accessing the area.

Council road tested the commute from Gables to Norwest for a week during peak hour. The average speed never made it past 24km/h and in fact on some days, the average speed never made it past 18km/h.

It should not take 45 mins to

drive an 18km trip! If we think it is bad now, it is only going to get worse particularly given the transport orientated development (TOD) precinct which runs between Bella Vista and Kellyville Metro stations was recently rezoned by the NSW Government for 11,600 apartments and more than 23,000 people!

As a result of the failure of these State arterial roads, it means local roads have become rat runs as more motorists avoid the State arterial roads to get to their destination quicker. Roads like Annangrove Road and Kenthurst Road along with many others are becoming congested with more residents stuck in traffic!

It is not realistic to expect hundreds of thousands of people to move into North-West Sydney without significant investment into roads. The traffic is also a disincentive to businesses looking to establish here.

For local families, the need for more schools to meet demand is also a major concern.

Now 46% of our schools are over the cap by 100+ students and we have some of the biggest schools in the State. It is estimated that the Hills requires an extra 14 schools including three primary schools and a public K-12 school in Box Hill.

Currently, at Box Hill there is a temporary primary school with a permanent school yet to be build and right now most children in Box Hill are accessing schools in other parts of the Hills adding to the traffic woes.

In other parts of the Hills, parents are concerned about the quality of education in schools over the cap particularly at schools like Castle Hill High which has over 50 demountable, very little playground and students are forced to walk in mud to access classrooms when it rains.

For the sporting community and parents, there is angst around the lack of sporting fields including basketball and netball courts to meet the future needs of the Hills.

We all want our children out playing sport but right now clubs are having to turn our people as the facilities are at capacity.

Currently there is nine sport fields required across the Castle Hill, Kellyville, Norwest, Rouse Hill and Baulkham Hills precincts, all of which are currently unfunded. Similarly, in Box Hill, there is 16 sporting fields unfunded and yet to be delivered.

Box Hill, the suburb the State forgot, was planned and delivered by the NSW Government. Originally planned for only 9600 dwellings, Box Hill will now have an additional

16,000 homes and another 50,000 people in the next 10 years.

Currently there is a $207M shortfall in funding to deliver essential infrastructure like parks, roads, sporting fields, playgrounds, bridges and pathways.

The $207M shortfall is the direct result of the decisions of successive governments and include things such as the capping of development contributions and the undervaluing of land and infrastructure in the contribution plan. At the time contributions were capped, the Government promised to make up the shortfall but that hasn’t happened.

As a result, Council now has no way of delivering $207M of infrastructure to the Box Hill community other than increasing rates which is not an option in a cost-of-living crisis. The young families living in Box Hill shouldn’t be asked to fund the shortfall created by Government.

Recently, The Hills Shire Council launched its “Fight for a Fairer Hills Future” campaign. This campaign recognises Council’s role in delivering housing and calls on the Government to fund the essential upgrades the Hills needs to support our growing population. We are also appealing to the Federal Government who is also focused on housing.

At the end of the day, we just want our fair share of infrastructure to meet the needs of our rapidly growing population.

As part of our campaign, we are asking residents and workers across North-West Sydney to sign our e-petition to the NSW Parliament asking for the upgrade of 45 roads including Windsor and Old Windsor Roads, and urgent funding for schools and sports fields.

Since our campaign started, we have already seen announcements from the Federal Government and the Federal Opposition pledging funds towards the upgrade of Windsor and Old Windsor Road.

This is welcomed news, but we still have a long way to go. As a Mayor who has lived in the Hills almost my entire life, I remain committed to ensuring that the Hills remains the greatest place on earth to live, work and play now and well into the future.

To learn more about the Fight for a fairer Hills Future Campaign to sign our e-petition go to www.fairerhillsfuture. com.au

Judges praise Local Business Awards Finalists

Best Canterbury Bankstown Businesses

THERE are only a few weeks left until the winners of the Canterbury Bankstown Local Business Awards are announced at a gala presentation evening to be held on Wednesday, May 14 at Revesby Workers Club.

The competition is close, according to Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe. “Our judges are always impressed by the high standard of the Canterbury Bankstown Local Business Awards finalists,” he said.

“This year is no exception, and our judges have said it has been a challenging task to separate this year’s awards finalists and determine the winners in each category.”

Mr. Loe said that the high quality of the Canterbury Bankstown finalists came as no surprise.

“After more than 30 years of running the Local Business Awards, I know that businesses in the Canterbury Bankstown are adaptable and hard-working.

“They always put their best foot forward and ensure that their customers receive outstanding products and service.

Mr. Loe extends his gratitude to the Canterbury Bankstown Presenting Partner: Commonwealth Bank, Major Partners: Canterbury Bankstown Council, NOVA Employment, and Bankstown Central and Support Partners, White Key Marketing, Campsie Centre, Bass Hill Plaza, and Revesby Workers Club. “Without their support and generosity, this program simply would not be possible,” he said.

Tickets are selling fast for this year’s Awards presentation evening to be held on Wednesday, 14th May at Revesby Workers Club.

“The presentation evening is a celebration not to be missed, showcasing fantastic entertainment, and attended by local dignitaries. However, it is the finalists and winners who are the true stars of the show,” Mr. Loe said.

“While there can only be one winner

in each category, as far as I am concerned, every finalist is a winner.”

As always, Access News will cover the event, with a special feature published the following week, listing all the winners and showcasing photos from the night.

For more information about the Local Business Awards, call Precedent Productions on 8363 3333 or visit www.thebusinessawards.com.au.

Hi I’m Irene Tilegrafos a self-taught makeup artist based in Sydney NSW. My journey in the beauty industry began at a young age between the ages of 14 and 16 when I first discovered my passion for makeup. Home Care Made Simple

WINTER TRAVELLING IN THE USA Utah has everything

STARGAZING, skiing, tobogganing, ice castle experience, interesting history and great dining. Make sure you put Utah on your radar as your next winter holiday. It is wonderful in all seasons but don’t miss Utah in the winter - it’s particularly special.

Go For the Snow

Park City Mountain Resort is the USA’s largest snow resort and is only 30-35 minutes by car, uber or shuttle bus from Salt Lake International Airport. Park City Mountain Resort has two mountain bases, Park City and the Canyons - and both offer slightly different experiences. The Canyons has a brand-new upmarket accommodation, shopping and dining precinct called The Pendry, with amazing Japanese and Mexican food and a new gondola being installed over summer ready for winter season 2025/26. This will whisk guests from right outside the Pendry precinct up to the Red Pine skiing area. At the Park City Mountain base side you can ski from the top of the resort all the way down to Park City’s historic Main Street. Here you can go shopping, eat lunch or grab a coffee and catch a chairlift back up, all just 5 metres from the front of your restaurant in the Main Street of the town. I can’t think of another snow resort where you can have this unique experience, and I have visited 100 snow resorts in the USA, Europe and America. Find out more about Park City skiing at www.skiutah.com

History

Park City has a colourful history as a mining town, back in the 19th and 20th centuries silver, lead and zinc were extracted from the mountains and consequently you can ski around on the mountain and still see remnants of mining equipment large and small from this era. As you ski around it’s fun to see mining themes in the daylodges when you stop for lunch or a drink, and you can sign up to get a tour, skiing around picturesque mining structures that sit with a backdrop of snow. Tours run every day at 10am and 12.30pm during the winter season and check the schedule for details www. parkcitymountain.com/explore-the-resort/activities/winter-activities/historic-mountain-tours

Sundance Film Festival

Every January, Park City hosts the

Sundance Film Festival, an independent short film and documentary film festival that celebrates emerging talent and thought-provoking ideas in 11 categories over 11 days. Films are shown at different venues around Park City and the town comes alive with festival-goers dining, discussing, walking between different films and even throwing on the skis for a few laps at Park City Mountain. Head to www. festival.sundance.org/ for next year’s tickets, the festival runs from 22nd January to the 1st February 2026.

Food culture

Did you know Park City is well-known as a foodie destination? Walk along Main Street and enjoy the colourful street scene with bars, pubs and restaurants vying for your attention. Riverhorse on Main offers American fine dining with seasonal food and local ingredients. High West Distillery & Saloon serves American pub food and as the first legal distillery in Utah since the Prohibition era has a range of craft spirits and unique charm. The Farm, on the Canyons base side offers American farm to table meals and is a fun place

to sit outside on a sunny day. Midway Mercantile is a short drive from Park City Main street and a great American dining experience in a refurbished general store. It serves up locally sourced cuisine from fresh local ingredients and centres on a hearth-to-table family dining experience. www.parkcitymountain.com/explore-the-resort/during-your-stay/dining

Activities Galore

Just 20 minutes down the road from Park City Main Street is an activities precinct that offers family snow tubing. Soldiers Hollow Nordic Center has the longest tubing lanes in Utah at 1200 feet (365 metres) long, so long you need a conveyor belt to get to the top. Sessions go for 2 hours, it is an experience suitable for Grandma as well as toddlers, dress warmly as this exciting ride is an outdoor experience.

Ice Castles

Is an all-ages activity best enjoyed at night when the sun goes down as purpose-built ice castles, sculptures and slides are lit up with neon lights and music. This activation is hand-built by 20 to 40 ice artists, and all 12,000 icicles are made by hand. It is across the road from the Soldier Hollow tubing activity and takes about an hour so if you plan ahead you can enjoy both before heading to

the Midway Mercantile for a warm meal. Don’t forget to book your activities and dining ahead.

Star gazing and Pitch Black Skies

Utah has several locations recognised as International Dark Sky Places, such as Antelope Island State Park, a 45-minute drive from Salt Lake City, known for amazing night sky quality. It is worth experiencing if you have more time in the area and perhaps a couple of nights staying in Salt Lake City before or after your flight.

Easy Access

Utah is a very easy destination to get to with flights into Salt Lake City via a quick stopover in Los Angeles with many airlines to choose from. There are plenty of shuttle bus services available from Salt Lake City International Airport to get you from the airport to Park City and it’s best to reserve a seat in advance. Ubers are frequent and very reliable and once you’re in Park City, the free bus system will take you to both snow resort mountain bases, Main Street and Kimbell Junction if you enjoy outlet shopping. You really don’t need a car and using public transport is a fun and easy way to mix with locals and find out firsthand what live music, events and activities are, so don’t be shy to have a chat.

Explore more of Utah at www.visitutah.com.

ASnow Action magazine relaunched

USTRALIA’S premier snow publication, in print for over 27 years is relaunching May 2025 with a fresh look and an increased focus on women as skiers, snowboarders, travellers and key family decision makers.

Editor Emma Wilson says: “I made this decision based on the needs of the families around me, including my own. We want to be able to decide which

destinations we’d like to take our babies, toddlers, teenagers and adult kids to, what gear and season passes to buy and we do not want the decisions to be made by just the males of the family. Gone are the days the guys go on a trip and the women stay at home - or just tag along just to ski alone all day. I’m bringing the wonderful world of snow sports up to speed to reflect what we want”.

Snow Action magazine will be available in newsagents across Australia from MidMay 2025. It will be in visitor show bags at the Sydney Snow Travel Expo at Darling Harbour’s International Convention Centre on Sunday 25 th May. Come along and discover over 70 snow destinations for your next snow trip.

NEW Launched in Western Sydney Dementia Care Navigator Service

Western Sydney is home to over a million people, 53% of whom were born overseas, and 58% of whom speak a language other than English at home. With estimates that more than 436,000 Australians are living with dementia, and two-thirds of those living in community, it is crucial that people have access to free navigation tools to get the support they deserve.

WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health Network are funding the Dementia Care Navigator to help people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds navigate the health system and access the right support services whilst seeking a dementia diagnosis or following a diagnosis.

What is the Dementia Care Navigator?

The Dementia Care Navigator is designed to support people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to learn about dementia, seek a diagnosis, connect with service providers, and access services at all stages of the dementia journey.

Who can Access it?

The Dementia Care Navigator service is available in Blacktown, Cumberland, Parramatta, and The Hills Local Government areas. It aims to connect people who speak a language other than English to government-funded dementia care services and supports. The service offers group information sessions, ongoing one-on-one support, expert advice, and access to translated resources and interpretation services.

The Dementia Care Navigator service is available to:

9 Individuals who primarily speak English as a second language.

VAPE HONEYMOON UP IN SMOKE

Changing laws around vaping

PERSONAL possession and use of vapes is not criminalised in Australia – yet.

But the situation for the manufacturers and retailers of vapes has changed as of July 2024, when the manufacture, supply and commercial possession of disposable single use vapes became unlawful.

While the tobacco wars continue in Melbourne, new criminal offences and civil penalty provisions now apply under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 as of July 2024.

Questions are being asked in some quarters about whether the rollout of the tougher laws has been properly handled.

“The government is

entitled to take such action against vapers as it sees fit but there is an obligation to make sure that people know about the changes in the law,” according to Sydney criminal law specialist Mathew Nott.

“At the moment, if you are not selling vapes out of a pharmacy, you are going to be selling vapes illegally.

“I would guarantee that you would not have to look too hard in certain parts of Sydney to find retailers unwittingly selling vapes simply because they are not aware of the change to the law.”

Vapes are battery-powered electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) that contain nicotine and are used in place of smoking tobacco.

But the regulations state that until 30 September 2024, you will need a prescription.

However, from October 1, 2024, if you are 18 years or older you can purchase a vape from a pharmacy without a prescription. If you are under 18, you will still require a prescription subject to state and territory laws.

Under the Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Act 2023 amendments have also been made which have come into force from July this year.

These include plain packaging, flavours will be limited and the bans regarding tobacco advertisement will also apply to vapes.

What are the new penalties?

The penalties are set out in the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Act 2024. These reforms are targeting suppliers and manufacturers, not individuals.

This means that personal use of vapes that have been lawfully supplied and are less than the permitted quantities will not attract a criminal offence.

However, illegal suppliers will still face a range of consequences. This will differ based on the quantity of vape products.

The penalties include: Importing, manufacturing or supplying: Imprisonment of 7 years or $550, 000 or both.

Possessing as a retailer, less than commercial quantity: Imprisonment of 12 months or $55,000 or both.

Possessing at least commercial quantity: Imprisonment of 2 years or $110,000 or both.

The commercial quantity from October 1, is nine vaping devices, 60 vaping accessories and 400mL of vaping substance. https:// www.tga.gov.au/sites/ default/files/2024-07/possession-and-supply-of-vaping-goods-in-australia-guidance.pdf
