Charlotte Tracing the origins of the land now called Charlotte is like following an old game trail through ancient forest. The tracks, crushed turf and broken twigs are gone but an impression on the forest itself has been left.

A shallow furrow, patches of exposed mud and a narrow line cut through the undergrowth visible only when directly on the trail then vanishing in the seeming chaos a pace to the left or right.

Charlotte was part of the hunting grounds of the Seneca Nation. The marsh and lowland woods near the great lake of Ontario provided game in abundance and fish populated the river and the fresh waters of what is but a part of the vast inland sea of the Great Lakes.

Perhaps the first European to see the area was interpretor and explorer Étienne Brûlé who mapped the Genesse River valley during his years spent living among the native peoples at the behest of renowned explorer and benefactor Samuel de Chmplain. Brûlé achieved notoriety after betraying Champlain and France to the English. The long time frontiersman met his death at the hands of his own adopted Huron people in 1643.

Charlotte’s future didn’t rest in the hands of the French, and as England slowly conquered New France, a nascent United States started to fill the space formally occupied by purely European powers. In 1788, a mere year after the signing of the Constitution, the Mill Yard Tract was created.

This parcel was purchased from the Senecas by New England businessmen Oliver Phelps and Nathanial Gorham. The lake shore portion of the parcel would grow into Charlotte. The beginning of the village was with a single hut. This modest structure was built on the west bank of the river by William Hincher and his son who were later joined by his wife and seven daughters. The village proper was laid out in 1792 by Colonel Robert Troup who created single acre lots of the now defunct Mill Yard Tract. Once divided, the whole area was named Charlotteburgh after his daughter. These settlements preceded the founding of Rochester.

The end of the war lead to a true flowering of the lake trade and in 1820 no less than 316 ships visited the port. To accommodate the increased shipping, the first light house for the port was built in 1821. However, the lake trade couldn’t compete with the Erie Canal and later railroad lines.

The rebound and reinvention of Charlotte came after the Civil War. The schooners and heavy limbed sailors and dock workers of the previous era gave way to vacationers and excursion steamers as the port transitioned into a summer resort. Leaving behind the summer heat to enjoy the cool lake air, people flocked to the small port and the Genesee Yacht Club was hence established in 1874.

Over the years, Charlotte has embraced its new role offering a sandy beach front and bustling park along with several eateries near the lake. Rochesterians will find local favorites like Italian food from Mr. Dominic’s On the Lake. Cheeburger Cheeburger’s famed one pound burger beckons along with sushi from California Rollin II. Savory steaks, BBQ and seafood can be found at LDR Char Pit, Nola’s BBQ and Pelican’s Nest Restaurant respectively.

Finally, there is the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse. Dating from 1822, the 40-foot octagonal tower now stands as the last original lighthouse on Lake Ontario. The site now houses a museum and offers a commanding view of the Port of Rochester. The lighthouse serves as a direct link to Charlotte’s past while offering an enviable view of its present.

The early 1800s saw the growth of Charlotte as a port town in the vibrant trade network spreading through the Great Lakes. Frontier merchant, George Clinton Latta, ran a fleet of sleek squared sailed schooners from Charlotte. This trade was seriously disrupted when war broke out in 1812. The threat of English naval raids coming from Canada was so severe shipping had to be diverted miles inland to Carthage Landing (near the Veterans Memorial Bridge). Several encounters occurred at or near Charlotte with Royal Navy forces actually landing in June 1813 to take supplies from the local people. Later efforts were met first by the ships under Commodore Issac Chauncey and later the canons of local militia units.

Answer: Rock shrimp (Sicyonia brevirostris) have a hard, spiny shell more like a lobster rather than its

shrimp relatives. This shrimp-family member resembles a miniature lobster and is wild-caught from Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico, along the coast of California and in the Caribbean. The name comes from the thick, rock-hard shells that are immensely difficult to remove by hand. The shell is "hard as a rock," hence the name “rock shrimp”. The texture of rock shrimp is firm and slightly chewy, the flavor sweet and similar to that of lobster.

La-Tea-Da Tearoom & Parlour opened in 2005, by Maureen and Al Becker, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. After a short time, we realized that breakfast just wasn’t working.

So instead, we now offer Brunch every Sunday. This did work. Now we continue to provide a highly enjoyable experience, whether it be for the delicious brunch or a sitting for tea.

“I try to be all things to all women from 5 to 105”, states Maureen Becker, “Laughter, chatter, great food and tea is what we are about.”

In January 2015, there was a fire that devastated our town. We were unsure if we could re-open. A Go-Fund-Me to rebuild LaTea-Da was started, and raised hundreds of dollars! A location was found in East Rochester and in July 2015, we had our Grand Opening.

With my husband, a chef for 45 years, we designed a new menu, designed for a woman’s pallette. It was a hit - and even more, men were now joining us.

The Dog and the Frog Out and about, I was... sniffing my usual spots in my yard, stopping to leave my mark here and there, when I saw something moving through the grass just ahead of me. I stepped forward, it moved forward. Once, then twice, and again... wait, where’d it go? There it is! I pounced on it, but missed. Now it was on my right...

I stepped forward, it moved again. I could see its dark green and brownish body through the lemon balm stalks, and readied myself to catch this thing.... ready.... Pounce and bite!

Got it! It was cold, and suddenly slimy. My mouth was bitter and began to foam and began watering uncontrollably.

“Bloughff, bloughff, haack,” I went, and spit this thing out right away. The foam kept coming and the more I licked the worse it was getting!

“Mommy!” I barked, and ran towards the house. I ran up to my Mom and right away she began wiping my face with a wet rag, and ran to get the hose. I waited for her because I knew Mom always made things better.

She came back with the hose and washed my mouth and face until all the foam was gone and my mouth stopped watering.

“Thanks, Mom!” I knew she would know what to do, but I still didn’t know what that thing was, and where did it go? Where did it come from? Were there more things? My tummy felt a little funny, and my head was a little spinny. I needed to take a nap so we went inside and laid on the couch together for some time.

A little while later, I had to go out again. Those spots I marked earlier may need refreshing, so I began my route through the yard. I got to the spot where the thing was and stopped. Cautiously, I stepped through the stalks of lemon balm and spearmint, which Mom calls “invasive”, but that’s a story for another day, and there the thing was. Just looking at me. It didn’t seem affected at all. And yet, something inside me still wanted to catch it.

Mom was calling me at the back door. I looked up for only a second, and when I looked back, the thing was gone! I guess it was for the best, because I don’t ever want to taste that bitter thing again!

“Coming Mom,” I barked, and ran inside. Sure to be out marking my spots, and off again to find other things another day.

Are Your Pets Ready For a Natural Disaster or Emergency?

What if you needed to grab everything you could think of to survive for a few days, or even a week away from your home and the basic supplies? Would you be ready or able to have the necessities quickly?

Important documents, photos, are also important. We all should have a survival kit in arm’s reach - in the unfortunate event we ever need it, it will be there.

What about your pets? Of course we all would bring them with us - the pack stays together. Do you have ready what they would need? Here are some valuable ideas to keep in mind, and create your own Pet Survival Kit. Crates and Carriers: Can you easily house several animals in one crate? If you have 2 cats, and only one carrier, do you have another option to maintain control of the other cat if they can not be housed together.

Food: Have enough of their regular daily food for at least 7 days - a Gallon Zip-lock bag is usually enough, depending on kibble size. Don’t forget a plastic or metal dish.

Water: Bottled water is best. Rationing is always important with both food and water. Bring as much as you can carry, I pack 6 bottles in my Survival Kit. Don’t forget a plastic or metal dish.

Proof of Vaccination: This will help if you and your pets are separated and/or quarantined. This also will have your veterinarian’s information listed.

Photos: Recent photographs of your pets will help in identification and proof of ownership, in the event you and your pets are separated.

First Aid: Basic first aid kits are a must ALWAYS and ANYTIME. You should have one in your car. If your pet is on any medications, be sure to have an extra prescription filled for the kit. Store them in their original bottles with labels attached.

Other items to include: Zip-lock bags of dog treats and cat treats, blankets or towels, familiar toys, extra leash or harness, “poopie” bags and a few garbage bags.

Portable/disposable litter boxes are also handy.

Severely overweight, and harboring two large tumors, she was not feeling her best. With her new mom’s help, she shed the extra pounds and a plan went into action to save Maggie’s life.

The Community and Wellness Guide was contacted, and we had to try to do something to help this pet, and hopefully others like Maggie.

The Community Coalition For Pets.org was born.

With the community’s help and through fundraising, we strive to assist owners of rescued pets with the financial assistance needed to improve their pet’s health and quality of life.

Maggie has since had a full recovery from the surgical removal of both tumors and has began a return to a happier and healthier life.

M onica’s Story

Monica’s Pies

I was born and raised in Naples. My parents, John and Katherine Clark were both teachers at Naples Central School.

When I was 3 years old, they bought Hoyt’s Boat Livery located in a little settlement called Woodville on the south end of Canandaigua Lake. From then on my summers were spent at the lake and when I was old enough, I worked at the Boat Livery and helped my mother in the small restaurant there.My mother is a wonderful cook and always made me welcome and comfortable in her kitchen. It was there that I learned to cook and bake. Mothers’ pies were well known even then: locals, fishermen and boaters came week after week Open 9 AM to 5 PM -7 days, year round for a piece of her wonderful pies. The ground work was laid for what would come to be Monica’s Pies.

I started making grape pies in the fall of 1983,in my mothers home,located in Woodville on busy Route 21, when Concord grapes were not in demand because of the popularity of white wines. It was a way to use our grape crop and for me to stay at home with my young family.

Monica’s Pies is a family owned and operated business. Mother is the “crust expert” (although at 95, she has some well trained elves to help her), my husband Greg, is in charge of the grapes in the fall and he folds all the boxes(which is no small feat!),my children Joseph, Charlena and Willie have all gone their separate ways now, but when they are around they pitch in with whatever needs doing and I along with some very talented and dedicated friends, make my signature pies and fillings.

The first couple of years my mother and I made our pies in mother’s kitchen and sold them right outside the door at a roadside stand using ” The Honor system”. Our motto was “Try before you buy.” The pies became very www.monicaspies.com popular and we soon outgrew the small kitchen and moved to the basement, a.k.a.: “The Pie Kitchen.” This seemed to suffice until Mother decided it was time to sell her home. I did not want to give up the pie business, so we bought a four story barn on Route 21, not far from mother’s place and renovated it into a new pie kitchen, shop and an apartment for mother. The move was a good one and not long after we moved into the “Pie Barn,” we got a call from The Food Network’s Food Finds Show wanting to do a feature on our grape pies. Needless to say, national exposure was good for the pie business!!

The Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York is considered the grape pie capitol of the world. The grape pie is the unofficial trademark of Naples, NY and using the abundance of local concord grapes to make grape pies has been a tradition since the 1960’s.

Today we bake 25 varieties of pies including a very popular Chicken Pot Pie and a Three Cheese Spinach Quiche. The New York Times article(Nov.7,2004),Better Homes and Gardens(June 2005) and Country Discoveries(Sept/Oct 2002)have featured articles about us. All this wonderful exposure keeps us all very busy!

In addition to my pies,we have a variety of jams,jellies ,conserves(made here with local fruit),,seasonal specialties and gift items in the shop at 7599 State Route 21, just a mile and a half north of the village of Naples. Call us to order your favorite at 585-374-2139.

Our business started out with a dream of owning our own garage. After visiting several facilities and not having a good experience, we decided now was the time. We wanted an honest, friendly place for people to go.

I think Dan Sr. was born a mechanic along with our son. As kids, he built go-carts with engines and drove them up and down the road. He started repairing lawn mowers, then started tinkering with cars. Somehow he always knew what made what work.

Our son at the age of three already knew what tools his dad needed... that never did cease to amaze us. From there, they both worked in machine shops as mechanics, and set-ups while working on cars on the side. I used to call them “driveway mechanics”.

Now we own and operate D&L Speedy auto in Dansville N.Y. - family owned and operated. Our goal is to make everyone feel welcome, with honesty and integrity. We know we can’t please everyone, but we will do our best to try!
