s students return to Hopkinton schools this week, the familiar faces they’ll see once again will be covered with masks. That’s because the School Committee voted 5-0 at its meeting Aug. 19 to open the school year with the requirement that all students and staff wear face coverings. Five days later, the state’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education — after previously indicating each district would make its own determination — announced a statewide mask requirement for all public K-12 students and staff. The School Committee indicated its policy will be reviewed on a monthly basis as new information on COVID-19 comes available. Likewise, the state’s education c o m m i s s i o n e r, J e f f r e y R i l e y, said he will reassess the mandate on Oct. 1, looking at not just Mandate | 13

heila Zarba-Campbell was living a quiet life in Hopkinton on Sept. 11, 2001, the day al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked and flew two planes into the World Trade Center in New York, killing almost 3,000 people and injuring thousands more. The world changed that day as Americans witnessed the deadliest terror attack in history. For Zarba-Campbell, her world changed more than most. Her husband was aboard American Airlines Flight 11, the plane that hit the North tower at 8:46 a.m.
