Unveiling the Harmony of Holmdel:

A Gift from HFEE Transforms Indian Hill’s Music Room

In a grand celebration of the arts and community, Holmdel’s Indian Hill School has undergone a magnificent transformation of its cherished music room, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the of the Holmdel community who funds the Holmdel Foundation for Educational Excellence (HFEE), the dedication of a gifted and nurturing teacher, and the backing of the Holmdel School District. The significance of this space to Indian Hill cannot be overstated. The renovated music room serves as a testament to the deep-rooted connection between the community and the arts. This revitalization was not a mere facelift, but rather a comprehensive overhaul. The room underwent a remarkable metamorphosis—stripped down to its essence, meticulously painted, repaired, and adorned with new furniture, instruments, and acoustic panels. The dedication invested in this project unequivocally underscores Holmdel’s commitment to nurturing and supporting the arts. The anticipation and excitement among the students has been palpable. Eager to explore the newly revamped space, students look forward to immersing themselves in the musical haven. From the eye-catching marine-blue ukuleles and caramel-tinged guitars dotting the wall, to the addition of state-of-the-art percussion and brass instruments like the beautifully bronzed timpani and shimmering gold tubas, the room is destined to become a second home for these budding musicians. Amidst the amazing new instruments are technological elements that will further strengthen Holmdel’s music program and complement the ongoing innovative initiatives that Holmdel is widely known for. This includes a Promethean Board and Chromebooks that will aid instruction in note reading, composing, and sight reading. The hopes are high for a lasting impact on Indian Hill’s students—all of whom will be able to experience the room. Catherine Grunsfeld, HFEE’s newly minted Chairwoman said, “The renovated music room aspires to inspire more students to immerse themselves in the performing arts. We are proud of the many projects we have gifted across the STEAM spectrum and believe that the success of our children means nurturing all of their senses and abilities. We are thrilled to have been able to contribute in this way.” Expressing deep gratitude toward the HFEE, Catherine McCarthy, General Music/Instrumental Music Teacher said, “It was an honor for this project to be chosen by the HFEE for such a monumental contribution. From new instruments to ergonomic chairs, stands, and instrument cubbies, every detail exudes beauty.” She continued, “The palpable effect on students, who now feel elevated and important in the music room, epitomizes the essence of this philanthropic gesture.” As the room resonates with the harmonies of creativity and learning, the school and its families eagerly anticipate the upcoming winter concert on December 14 to experience the transformative power that music and community brings to us all.

VICTORY STABLES RIDE FOR THE CURE

How A Young Girl Transformed Her Post Traumatic Stress to Post Traumatic Growth

O

BY HANA VOZZO

n October 9th, 2023, Victory Stables, located in Colts Neck, New Jersey, participated in Ride for the Cure, an equestrian event to raise money for the Komen Foundation, which supports breast cancer research. The annual ride takes place in Vermont, but when 13-year-old Suhaila O’Dowd was scrolling through the Dover Saddlery website, looking for a new saddle to try to convince her parents to buy her for her birthday, she saw an advertisement for the Ride for the Cure event scheduled to take place in about a week’s time and wondered if she and her riding

coach, Adele Sessa, could organize a New Jersey ride for the next year. This cause is one that is close to home for the O’Dowd family, as Suhaila’s mother Nasheela, currently cancer-free, was diagnosed with breast cancer when Suhaila was 11 years old. Suhaila found out this life-altering news during the already chaotic quarantine days, and it marked the start of a difficult journey for her and her family. Having encountered many unknowns at such a young age, Nasheela smiled while remembering how her daughter handled everything with grace and kindness. Nasheela and Adele de-

scribe Suhaila as a respectful, mature, sincere, and appreciative young woman with a heart of gold. Riding since second grade, Suhaila has an immense passion for horses, riding, and competitive equestrianism. While she has only been riding with Adele at Victory Stables for about 18 months, her coach observed how she “fit right in with the other riders” and won reserved championship titles at one of her first showings in New York. Suhaila has always told her mom that she wanted to do something to raise money for breast cancer awareness, but her mom was not yet ready to tell her story. Nasheela often wondered when she would be ready, but when her daughter told her about Ride for the Cure, she said that “it felt like a sign from God” because the event deals with two significant things in their lives: breast cancer awareness and horses. While many people solely focus on the impacts breast cancer has on the women diagnosed, it also has a major influence on the person’s family and friends. Accordingly, Nasheela ultimately realized that this was not only her story to tell, as she received wise advice from a friend on the matter of telling her story, which she shared with Suhaila to encourage her to follow through with her plan to organize the ride. She said “With traumatic illnesses comes post-traumatic stress, so my friend told me that a way to transform your post-traumatic stress into post-traumatic growth is by telling your story and making the experience meaningful. I realized that Suhaila needed to do the Ride for the Cure to give meaning to the indescribable trauma she went through.” With this in mind, Suhaila describes how her love for horses and horseback riding kept her sane through tumultu-

ous times and provided her with a way to heal, as she wants to spread awareness and raise money for breast cancer research so that no one else has to go through what her mom and family experienced. Her mother notes that she “feels humbled by the passion, drive, and inspiration that Suhaila has, especially at 13,” and she is proud of the way she lives her life, leading with kindness. That’s why, when she saw the advertisement, Suhaila messaged Adele, who responded, “That’s great! Let’s do it… let’s organize it!” Suhaila and Adele laughed as they retold the story because when Suhaila sent the message only a week before the scheduled date of the ride, she expected Adele to help her coordinate their participation in

the ride for next year, but even when her coach realized the press for time she said “Wow, that’s next week! Forget it. We can do this; let’s organize it.” And although Suhaila is a relatively new rider at the barn, when she sent out the text asking if the other riders would be interested, they responded within 30 minutes, which really showed her the depth of the love and support in the barn community. Nasheela said it made her realize just how much Adele and the other riders care for her child, and “as a mother, there is no greater gift in life than to know that your child has found that kind of community.” Suhaila and her mother spoke glowingly about Adele, as they described how she creates a fantastic culture and com-

munity at Victory Stables because she really cares about the entire child. Suhaila explained how she not only rides but also Irish dances, plays volleyball, and goes to school, and Adele supports all these aspects of her life. Her mother said, “You think you’re just going for horseback riding, and Adele builds these kids for life!” When speaking with Adele, she shared that when she saw Suhaila’s message, she felt this was something she needed to help her do because at 13 years old, Adele almost lost her riding instructor and mentor Maddy Grae to breast cancer. She explains that growing up in the barn, Maddy was like a second mom to Adele, so it was very important to both her and Suhaila to participate in this ride. Describing her as “the salt of the earth,” Adele is amazed by Suhaila’s integrity and desire to make a difference in the world. With this, Suhaila and Adele organized the ride that took place on October 9th in only a week’s time. The ride consisted of seven riders: Hailey Black, Josephine Cassidy, Abigail Matthews, Margaret Smulewitz, Audrey Sousa, Caitlynn Tobin, and Suhaila O’Dowd, while Adele coached from the sidelines. The event went from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the riders starting at Victory Stables, where they saddled up the horses and decorated them with pink accessories, and ending at Buck

10

Mills Park, where they finished the ride and enjoyed pizza and soft drinks. Adele described how even the sky seemed to reflect the wonderful cause they supported, as it was a beautiful pink that morning. The goal for the entire Ride for Cure organization was $51,000, and the Victory Stables team raised $5,712 in total, which amounts to 11% of the organization’s total goal! The team was recognized for their galvanizing support of the cause at the Colts Neck town hall meeting on November 8th, 2023. Reflecting on the ride’s success, Adele said, “Wow, could you imagine what we could do in a year?!” Both she and Suhaila hope to make this an annual event; their goal is to reach out to local barns and the Colts Neck Trail Riders Club for next year. When asked what Suhaila is looking forward to for next year’s ride, she laughed as she said, “to give people more than a week’s notice,” because, as Adele

COMMUNITY MAGAZINE CommunityMagazineNJ.com

noted, there was tremendous interest in the event, but some riders were unable to attend due to the short notice. With the help of her community, Suhaila was able to transform her Post Traumatic Stress into Post Traumatic Growth, as she, Adele, and the other riders raised money for the cause and joined the fight against breast cancer. Suhaila hopes that others can look to her story and feel inspired; she wants people to know that they too can become the authors of their own stories and make a difference in the world at any age.

Raising Community Awareness Towards “the Silent Disease” Holmdel Resident is Named the Youth Honoree for the Arthritis Foundation’s 2023 Jingle Bell Run By Charlotte J. Edwards

Holmdel resident Christina Rizzo remarks that she did not anticipate changes in her daughter Natalie’s gait to be a warning sign of juvenile arthritis. Natalie is now 6-years-old, and though she received the news of her diagnosis at the age of 4-years-old, her parents believe her journey with this autoimmune disease began at the age of 17 months old, as they noticed that she was not bearing weight on her ankle when she was learning to walk. Alarmed, her parents took Natalie to be seen at the Emergency Room at Monmouth Medical Center, where she underwent an x-ray and an examination by a pediatric orthopedist; however, the initial test results did not reflect any abnormalities, and Natalie resumed walking normally again. Two years following this incident, her mom was concerned after observing that Natalie seemed “very stiff” when she walked, and after a blood test denoted a striking elevation in her inflammatory markers and a visit with the pediatric rheumatologist Dr. Anna Carmela Sagcal Gironella at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, she was diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. After her diagnosis was confirmed, Natalie and her family collaborated with Dr. Gironella and the team at Jersey Shore to create a treatment plan that was tailored in accordance with the specific type of her arthritis. Christina shares that the biggest obstacle that her family has endured is learning how to adapt to a new routine, as she notes, “We’re always running around now. Natalie receives routine Humira injections that are self-administered, takes oral medication weekly, and a daily pill to manage and mitigate the inflammation. Her immunity is also suppressed now as a side effect of the Humira shots.” The doctors predict Natalie to be in remission soon, and Christina expresses her profound gratitude for the care and attention provided by the entire staff at Jersey Shore, emphasizing, “Hackensack Meridian and the team at Jersey Shore have been really great. They know what they’re doing, and we’re really happy with them” The Arthritis Foundation has also served an invaluable role in Natalie’s experience with juvenile arthritis since the beginning, as Christina reflects on how touched both she and her family was upon their immediate and continual ushering of resources and support. Following Natalie’s diagnosis, the foundation sent her a care package, and helped to connect her parents with other local

families affected by juvenile arthritis. In conversation with Christina, she shared that she was surprised at discovering the rare prevalence of this autoimmune disease within the community when she posted about Natalie on the ‘Holmdel Moms’ Facebook page. “There were only two moms that responded and shared their child’s experiences with juvenile arthritis,” she commented, continuing, “The foundation has made this process feel less isolating for us. They send all affected children and their families care packages and a backpack with a teddy bear that can be heated up in the microwave. They also include educational materials on the different forms of juvenile arthritis and research opportunities.” Among the plethora of ways that the foundation has supported Natalie and her family, they were most moved when Emily Meyers, Associate Director for the New Jersey chapter of the Arthritis Foundation reached out directly to Christina to invite Natalie to be the youth honoree at the 2023 Jingle Bell Run. The 5K race is scheduled for December 2nd at Bell Works in Holmdel, New Jersey, and will offer a myriad of festivities available to participants, such as a Kids Zone, “Strut your Mutt,” a hot chocolate station, and a meet-and-greet with Santa to infuse some holiday cheer while raising awareness for an important cause. In addition, all runners will receive a medal and t-shirt when they complete the race. Natalie is described by Christina as an avid swimmer who is an enthusiast for being close to the water, enjoys playing with her younger brother, Joey, and loves school. Most importantly, she is devoted to utilizing her innate resilience and selflessness to not only share her story, but to inspirit the community to become involved in advancing research to combat “the silent disease.” For more information about Natalie’s story, the Arthritis Foundation, and to support Natalie’s team for the race, you can visit: https://events.arthritis.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive. event&eventID=1546.

11th District Senate Race

Incumbent Senator Vin Gopal (D) defeated his opponent Public Relations Consultant Steve Dnistrian (R) by a 22 point margin, over 12,000 votes – 60% to 38%, the largest margin of any legislative candidate in District 11’s history. Gopal defeated Dnistrian in 15 out of 17 municipalities. His runningmates, Dr. Margie Donlon (D) and Former Judge Luanne Peterpaul (D) easily defeated Republican incumbent Assemblymembers Marilyn Piperno (R) and Kim Eulner (R) by nearly 8,000 votes. YMCA to Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s Legacy at 35th Memorial Breakfast January 12 The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County is set to host its 35th annual commemoration, paying tribute to the legacy and contributions of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All are welcome to attend the memorial breakfast on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, featuring keynote speaker Maysa Akbar, Ph.D., the chief diversity officer and chief of psychology in the public interest at the American Psychological Association. The Y will also honor three local residents who reflect the spirit of Dr. King’s social justice work and present the winners of its annual MLK Essay Contest. The event is scheduled for 7:30-9:30 a.m., at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa, 1 Ocean Blvd, in Long Branch. “The Y’s annual Dr. King celebration is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on our society,” said Laurie Goganzer, president and chief executive officer of the Y. “Dr. King’s legacy continues to inspire us to strive for a more just and equitable world.” Michael A. Wright, chief volunteer officer of the Y and chairperson of the MLK event committee, expressed the Y’s deep honor in having Akbar as the distinguished speaker for the 35th MLK commemoration. “Dr. Akbar is a widely respected advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion,” he said, noting that she played a pivotal role as the former CEO of a New Haven-based clinical practice specializing in race-based trauma. Additionally, Akbar founded a consulting firm and educational network committed to driving organizational cultural transformation. Her areas of specialty include racial identity development, racism, urban trauma, and allyship, topics on which she has written books and authored research articles. She is also a master trainer in equity, diversity and inclusion for both the medical and broader community. As part of the program, the Y will acknowledge community honorees whose work reflect Dr. King’s principles: Suzy Dyer, executive director of the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank; Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy, founded by Ritesh Shah; and Kelly Ellis-Foster, a dedicated supporter of the Y’s volunteer initiative, Togetherhood. The two winners of the Y’s Annual Dr. King Essay Contest will present their essays at the event and be awarded $3,000 academic scholarships. The scholarships are sponsored by Hackensack Meridian Health, the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, New Jersey Natural Gas, PorterPlus Realty, and the VNA Health Group. The commemorative event will begin with registration at 7 a.m., followed by breakfast at 7:30 and the MLK program will start at 8. Event tickets are $35 for adults, $10 for youth under 16 and $350 for a table of 10 and may be purchased online at https://ymcanj.org/ mlk. Tigger Stavola Foundation Sets Fundraising Record at 10th Anniversary Infinity Event The Tigger Stavola Foundation (TSF), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to fighting addiction, spreading awareness and saving lives through drug prevention and education marked its 10-year milestone of supporting families impacted by addiction with a Phantom of the Opera-themed fundraising gala on November 3. Over 400 guests, several grieving the loss of a loved one to overdose, convened at the Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury where Monmouth County defense attorney, Mitchell Ansell was honored. The event featured a performance from “Phantom” on Broadway, Craig Schulman, a remembrance ceremony and a silent auction, which contributed to a fundraising record for the foundation. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our donors, many of whom have been supporting us since our formation 10 years ago,” said Andrea LeLand, Tigger Stavola Foundation’s Executive Director. “This event was our most successful fundraiser

to date. The robust support is greatly needed as we build out innovative drug education programming gaining momentum at middle and high schools throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties.” The evening of remembrance kicked off with a moving welcome speech from founder and mother of Tigger, Lisa Stavola. She recounted both the hardship of losing a 25-year old son to an opiate overdose, and the progress the Tigger Stavola Foundation has made. “We have built a platform for change that has broken through barriers to change the stigma surrounding those afflicted with addiction,” said Stavola. Event patrons were also introduced to the next phase of TSF’s drug prevention education – LED by Tigger. This new platform is the first of its kind - delivering engaging content via text messaging to help teens make safe and informed choices

Canvas was a featured stop along the route of the “Small Business Saturday” trolley, which traveled through Fair Haven on November 25. It’s open house for children ages 4-12 was well attended. Since 2011, Canvas has been offering a variety of art classes and art camps for

every age group. Its popular after-school sessions supplement the art instruction available to kids through their school programs and are often taught by professional artists and art teachers of nearby schools. Kids love the comfortable space where they can connect with the process of art making and unwind from their busy schedules by immersing themselves in the fundamental elements of art. “Our classes provide knowledgeable and caring instruction that allow artists to explore and gain deeper understanding of materials and processes for their own creative direction,” says owner, Eileen Gillen Burgess. “We provide observation, reflection and practice for all of our students.” For more information, please visit https:// www.canvasstudioart.com/.

when confronted with vaping, marijuana, alcohol , tobacco and drugs. Enrollment opened last week to middle and high school students in four school districts. Elected officials, several of whom attended the Infinity event, have thrown their support behind TSF programming as it helps fill the gap for parents and educators who are challenged without a nationally- funded drug education program. The foundation was recently the recipient of a grant for $200,000 to fund its motivational speaker series at middle schools and high schools as part of the Monmouth County American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

A Celebration of Life, Love, and Remembrance in Emerald City: An Inside Look into the Frances Foundations’ 19th Annual Gala

T

he Frances Foundation hosted its 19th annual gala, “A Night in Emerald City,” at the Ocean Place Resort on October 21, 2023 - attended by nearly 900 supporters.. The festivities started at 6:30 pm and ended at 12:00 am, followed by a pizza afterparty lasting until about 3 am. Guests were dressed to the nines in Wizard of Oz-themed attire accented by radiant smiles and lively spirits as they enjoyed a night of dancing, music, food, and festivity to honor the bravery and resilience of the Frances Family’s warriors and angels. Founder Robert Heugle noted that

BY HANA VOZZO

“the night was outstanding in so many respects,” starting with a cocktail hour, where mingling guests were encouraged to purchase raff le tickets and view the variety of gift baskets provided for the winners. The guests then transitioned into the main room where they were served dinner as the presentation began. One of the first things they did once everyone was settled into their seats was play “Home,” by Phillip Phillips. Guests were urged to hold up their phone f lashlights and wave them to the beat of the song. The sea of lights was an ethereal representation of the power of the Frances Family and their desire to shine a light on the strength of the

warriors, angels, and their families. After the song, Robert gave a magnificent speech, which was followed by an invocation from Deacon Tom DiCanio. Some highlights of the night included the rainbow of joy that appeared when Warrior McKenzy Hupke, who has battled through over 50 surgeries, sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with her angelic voice resulting in a huge applause. Another incredible moment was when Robert presented Rachel Colby from the Holmdel Kiwanis with the Super Trooper Hero award, which is bestowed to a guest who epitomizes the qualities of bravery, grit, determination, self lessness, and the ability to smile in

the face of adversity. These are characteristics Rachel has embodied throughout her entire life, which were similarly celebrated ten years ago when Bruce Springsteen gave her a kiss and called her a “super trooper” during her stay at the hospital! Additionally, to show guests the impact of their generosity, the organization presented a video slideshow to exhibit the Frances Family’s events and memories since the last gala. The foundation also honored the warrior’s siblings by gifting them with Chick-fil-A gift cards, presented to the kids by Oz characters and the Chick-fil-A mascot cow. Moreover, to everyone’s surprise, there were also gift cards taped under each chair to give back to the wonderful Frances Family whose generous donations make the foundation’s efforts possible. Nevertheless, despite all the fun and festivities, the most important part of the night, the reason why everyone got

28

together, was honoring the warriors and angels. To honor the warriors, cued by a song of their choice, each one came to the stage to say one word that came to mind. They said things like “courage,” “love,” “gratitude,” and “bravery.” Robert explained that the gala’s success is measured by how many smiles they see on the kids’ faces, and those kids absolutely glowed when they came up one by one to say a word into the microphone. To celebrate and remember the legacy of the Frances angels, they played a video slideshow, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the angel’s families were assured that their precious children would never be forgotten. During these two ceremonies, the love and support in the room were never more palpable. After these moments of remembrance and honoring, the dancing commenced, and, looking around the room almost every chair was empty because everyone was

on the dance floor celebrating. The gala was a great success as New Jersey Senator Vin Gopal honored the Frances Foundation with a Senate Proclamation from the N.J. State Senate to commemorate the foundation for the work it does for pediatric cancer. The event raised $185,000, 100% of the proceeds going to pediatric cancer kids and their families. Nonetheless, more important than the money was that the night was an unforgettable celebration of life, love, and remembrance. The gala’s Wizard of Oz theme was quite fitting as the movie showcases the brains, courage, and heart that Dorothy needs to complete her journey to Oz. The warriors and angels were honored for the very same qualities as they embody them to fight cancer alongside the rest of the Frances Family. The Sharing Network Foundation Announces Election of Colts Neck Resident JP Bartolomeo as New Board Member to Help Guide Life-Saving Mission The Sharing Network Foundation is pleased to announce the election of JP Bartolomeo of Colts Neck to their Board. The new board member will play a pivotal role in guiding the Foundation’s strategic efforts to increase the number of lives saved and enhanced through clinical advancement, family support, public awareness and education about the benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The Sharing Network Foundation’s Board of Trustees is comprised of a diverse group of individuals from both public and private sectors, many of whom have been touched by donation, including donor families and transplant recipients. JP Bartolomeo brings a wealth of financial expertise to the board, having started his career in 1993 at Sherwood Securities

30

before joining The Benchmark Company in 2004 as a Senior Managing Director. His principled leadership helped expand the firm’s presence in Monmouth County. Besides his professional achievements, Bartolomeo is also an Eagle Scout, reflecting his dedication to service. His extensive network and professional experience are poised to open new doors for the Sharing Network Foundation. Tyler’s donated liver and kidneys saved the lives of three people. His donated heart valves helped two people with genetic disorders, and 16 people’s lives were enhanced with his skin donation, including 12 women recovering from mastectomies. Lorie Rodimer is now an integral member of the 5K Steering Committee and an enthusiastic fundraiser. Under her leadership, Tyler’s

Tight Lines raised more than $55,000. Rodimer also had the honor of representing the Sharing Network Foundation and Dignity Memorial at the 2023 Rose Parade, where Tyler was commemorated with a floragraph on the OneLegacy Donate Life parade float. According to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), there are over 100,000 Americans – nearly 4,000 of whom live in New Jersey – waiting for a life-saving transplant. However, the generosity of those in the Garden State is providing hope for the future. In 2022, the number of organ donors and organs transplanted in a single year reached all-time highs. This marked the fourth consecutive year NJ Sharing Network has reported new records in the number of organ donors, underscoring the clear trend of increased support for organ donation. “With the ongoing support of the Sharing Network Foundation and the outstanding additions to its Board, we are forging a path to save and enhance more lives than ever before,” said Carolyn M. Welsh, President and CEO, NJ Sharing Network, the non-profit organization responsible for the recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for the Garden State. “Together, we will ensure caring and compassionate support is always there for our organ and tissue donor families and give our transplant recipients more holidays, birthdays, and special moments to share with their loved ones.” One organ and tissue donor can save eight lives and enhance the lives of over 75 others. To learn more, get involved, and join the National Donate Life Registry as an organ and tissue donor, visit www. NJSharingNetwork.org.
