Capture State Cup Championship

T

he NJX Celtic U12G team captured the US Club NJ state cup championship on Sunday, May 11, 2014 with a resounding 2-0 win over PDA Storm. The first half was an evenly played game going into halftime tied 0-0. The Celtic came out strong to start the second half and then a clear from the PDA defense rolled out to left back Kate Cook who took a long shot that bounced over the PDA goalkeeper to score. Celtic took the lead 1-0 but PDA began to push forward. The Celtic defense anchored by center backs Angelina Rodriguez and Erin Gilfillan along with outside backs Morgan Hovan and Kate Cook held up against the attack. Key outstanding saves were made by goalkeeper Kelly Lambertson including a few scrambles inside the box. It was a true team effort with outstanding control of the midfield by Katherine Leturgez, Claudia Satzke, Ranya Senhaji and Lulu Lyle along with constant work up and down the field by forwards Bryonna Worthy, Carolina Fernandez, Sarah Letts, Bryn Radvanski and Kristen Battista. Jazmin Brown played thru a major injury up top to help will the

team to victory and spark some offense. The Celtic offense finished off the game on a quick counter attack. Attacking center midfielder Ranya Senhaji drove at the PDA defense and then slipped a perfectly placed through ball to center striker Bryonna Worthy. Bryonna sprinted behind the PDA defense and finished off the opportunity with a beautiful shot buried into the back of the net. NJX Celtic won 2-0 and captured their 2nd NJ Cup championship. They first won the championship back in 2010. The NJ Cup is a highly competitive, single elimination tournament open to all teams playing US Club soccer in the State of New Jersey. It is a six round event consisting of up to 64 teams in an age group. Early rounds of the games are played throughout March and April.
