Physiological responses are recorded while the patient sleeps, so that the sleep-wake disorder and related medical problems can be correctly diagnosed. The data is interpreted and forwarded to the patient’s referring physician with treatment recommendations. The HMC Sleep Disorders Center also provides, in-lab sleep studies for children ages two and up, as well as home sleep testing when required by the patient’s insurance.

Medical Term Definitions Allergy and Immunology - An allergist-immunologist is trained in evaluation, physical and laboratory diagnosis, and management of disorders involving the immune system. Selected examples of such conditions include asthma, anaphylaxis, rhinitis, eczema, and adverse reactions to drugs, foods, and insect stings as well as immune deficiency diseases.

Anesthesiology - An anesthesiologist is trained to provide pain relief and maintenance, or restoration, of a stable condition during and immediately following an operation or an obstetric or diagnostic procedure.

Audiology - Audiology is the study of hearing and hearing related disorders. An Audiologist is a “hearing health care professional” who identifies and assesses individuals with auditory (hearing) and/or balance concerns, problems or disorders.

Cardiology - Cardiologists deal with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. The field is commonly divided in the branches of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology.

Cardiopulmonary - Pertaining to both the heart and lungs.

Cardiovascular - Pertaining to the heart and the blood vessels.

Chiropractic - Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. Emergency Medicine - An emergency physician focuses on the immediate decision making and action necessary to prevent death or any further disability both in the prehospital setting by directing emergency medical technicians and in the emergency department.

Endocrinology - The study of the structure and functions of the endocrine glands and the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the endocrine system. Glands that manufacture one or more hormones and secrete them directly into the bloodstream. Endocrine glands include the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, ovary, testis, placenta and part of the pancreas.

Family Medicine - A family physician is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family and is trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all ages. The family physcian receives a broad range of training that includes internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and geriatrics.

General Surgery - A general surgeon has expertise related to the diagnosis; preoperative, operative, and postoperative management; and management of complications of surgical conditions.

Geriatrics - Geriatrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of disease and disability in later life.

Hospitalist - A hospitalist is a medical specialist who provides quality medical treatment to individuals while they are in the hospital – from admission to discharge.

Internal Medicine - A internist provides long-term, comprehensive care in the office and the hospital, managing both common and complex illness of adolescents, adults and the elderly.
