The heavy rains we received in late May and early June created some significant issues for our Beach Club pool. The rain and the unfortunate failure of a pump caused a number of issues with sand washing far into the pool. This required a significant effort (many times) to clean up the sand and caused us to have to close the pool for a couple of weeks. Thanks to the hard work of our maintenance team, there was no significant damage. Hopefully, that is behind us now and we will not have any further closures.
This month’s magazine will feature an article on our cardboard boat races in July and fireworks safety tips.
Board Meeting, May 23, 2024
The Board meeting was called to order at 12:30 PM. All Board members were present. Also attending were Grand Manors Vice President of On-site Management, Client Success Manager, our Executive Assistant, Financial Manager. Maintenance Supervisor, L&G Director and the Association’s Attorney.
The first item of business was to accept Director Norm Counts resignation from the Board effective immediately. On behalf of the Board, we want to thank Norm for his many years of service and the Financial and Governance process he initiated. Because of his efforts, the Association is in a better position than it would have been without his accomplishments. We will mis him.
We approved the appointment of Michael Warner as Board Director and Treasurer to fill the remaining term of Board member Counts effective immediately.
Four homeowners appeared. Two to discuss common area maintenance issues in Ballantrae Village, one to discuss dying Crepe Myrtles at the entrance of Wynn Ridge Estates and a question about a lack of trees along the center median of Ridge Road, and one to request an explanation of the Association’s fine, appeals and collection processes. He was directed to the Associations web site where all of these policies are available.
Approved the April 25, 2024 BOD meeting minutes, We reviewed and approved the Board Guideline Policies: Common Properties Signage Policy, Email Registration Policy, Social Media Channels Guidelines, Social Media Interaction Policy and Special Case Process for Covenant Enforcement and Fining Guideline. No changes were made.
We reviewed and approved the following revised Editorial Guidelines, Communications Committee Guidelines, and the Association Compliance Enforcement Procedure (ACE) Guideline.
We instructed the Client Success Manager to follow up on the items brought forth in the homeowner forum by Ballantrae Village and Wynn Ridge Estates.
Our Financial Manager reviewed April financial reports including Detailed Balance Sheet; Schedule of Revenues and Expenses, Operating Fund; Restricted and NonRestricted Investment Schedule; Summary of Accounts Receivable by Type; Summary of Bad Debt Expenses/ Reserve; and Performance History Reports from Cadent Capital LLC.
We reviewed and approved the Foreclosure report. We accepted the Variance Report, Payment Plan Status Report, Collections Committee Reports, Appeals Committee Decisions, Violations Reports, and the Projects Report.
We reviewed the Beach Club leak detection report. Flow meters are being installed to provide accurate information on water loss.
We continue to search for a new General Manager for the Association.
We approved funding requests to replace one of the Beach Club Pool Pumps that failed including check valves, and for an erosion issue at Wren Creek.
We reviewed the details of our upcoming contract bidding proposals for Landscape vendors.
We approved a new legal firm, Steptoe & Johnson as the Association’s Collection Legal Firm.
We reviewed the Association’s monthly water consumption report. Due to the large amount of rain we have received so far this year, we are currently under budget. However, the hot summer months of the year that consume the most water will soon be here.
The Association’s attorney updated the Board on current legal matters.
The meeting adjourned at 6:26 PM.

There are many local fireworks events coming up for the Fourth of July. These public events are sanctioned and approved by the City of McKinney Fire Department. There will not be a fireworks or drone show at Stonebridge Ranch this year.
It’s important to know that with NO exceptions, Stonebridge Ranch does NOT allow resident fireworks within its borders. The ban on fireworks is kind of a double no, because the City of McKinney does not allow fireworks in its borders and for 5,000 feet outside the city limits, either.
McKinney Fire Department Public Information Officer Merit Ossian
says “We don’t want anyone getting hurt or homes damaged. Leave fireworks to the professionals and have a safe holiday.”
Ossian points to City fireworks regulations as follows:
• It is illegal to possess or use fireworks in McKinney and 5,000 feet outside the city limits.
• This includes sparklers.
• Poppers are allowed.
• Fines up to $2,000.
McKinney defines fireworks as any composition or device for the purpose of producing a visible or an audible effect for entertainment purposes by combustion, deflagration, detonation and/or activated by ignition with a match or other heat producing device. By definition this includes sparklers. These can burn at a temperature up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. Not something you want your child holding! In fact, sparklers are the leading cause of firework-related injuries in children under 12.
According to the National Safety Council, fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires each year. It’s worse when drought conditions exist. The Consumer Products Safety Commission says at least nine people died and an estimated 11,500 were injured in 2021 in fireworks accidents. Adults ages 20 to 24 years had the highest rate of emergency department treated fireworks injuries in 2021; an estimated 31 percent of injuries involved hands and fingers.
Dogs are not particular fans of noisy fireworks. The American Veterinary Association recommends that pets be put inside or in an escape proof area during fireworks shows. Loud fireworks are frightening to pets and there is a risk of them running away. Be sure that your pets are micro-chipped for recovery.
So, your dogs are safe, and you’re ready for the big show. McKinney is doing its annual Red, White and BOOM. The show will be held at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park. The event will start with a couple of concerts beginning at 6:00 p.m., and the fireworks are scheduled to get underway at 9:45 p.m. You can get information here: https://www.mckinneytexas. org/830/Red-White-and-BOOM.
Watching that display is the perfect way to end the July 4th day you spent at Stonebridge Ranch Beach Club! Have a Happy and Safe Fourth of July, and we look forward to seeing you at the pool! ◀
Independence Day, also known as the 4th of July, is on us once again! This is the day in 1776 that the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence.
Here are some fun facts about the fabulous 4th that you may not know, in no particular order.
• Congress made Independence Day a paid federal holiday in 1938.
• Sponsored by Macy’s, the largest fireworks display in the nation is in New York City. In 2009 over 22 tons of fireworks were exploded.
• Bristol, Rhode Island has held a 4th of July
parade continuously every year since 1785. It’s the oldest such celebration in the nation.
• The United States Military Academy opened on July 4th, 1802 at West Point, New York.
• Finally, in an odd circumstance, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams – the only two of the signers of the Declaration of Independence who later became President – passed away on the same day, July 4, 1826. That day was also the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. ◀
Just a reminder – you still have time to show off your nautical skills by building a boat for the 2024 Stonebridge Ranch Cardboard Boat Races at the Beach Club on July 20.
Registration for this sink or swim event begins on July 20 at 11:00 am and racing heats get underway at 11:30 am at the Beach Club. Teams may consist of 1, 2, 3, or 4 people (adults and/or kids). Prizes will be awarded for speed and creativity.
Here are some of the materials you can and cannot use in creating your floating masterpiece. Family-friendly themed and decorated boats are encouraged. Use your imagination!
Materials permitted for boat construction:
• Corrugated cardboard and cardboard boxes
• Cardboard “blocks” (from furniture store packaging)
• Cardboard tubes

I enjoy adding unique and interesting plants to my landscape. I love plants with different shapes, colors, and textures, as they add variety and interest to my yard. Many of the recommended plants can be planted in your garden or flower beds, while others can thrive in containers. When planting in beds, space them adequately to allow for natural growth. For container plantings, ensure the containers are large enough for the plants to thrive. Some of these plants may be hard to find at local nurseries, but you can often find them online.
Here are some interesting plants to consider adding something different to your landscape:
Ginkgo ‘Autumn Gold’ – This tree will grow 35’ in height and 30’ in width. This is known as the fossil tree. Fossils of the leaves are documented as far back as the dinosaurs. The resilience of this tree is legendary all over the world. It will grow in plant zones 5 to 9, so this tree is perfect for this area. The tree can tolerate drought, humidity, wet and cold, and has a beautiful fall color and great shape and size for a home yard. The summer color is a lovely green, and the fan-shaped leaves are beautiful and interesting. This variety does not produce fruit and will grow best in full sun.
Ginkgo ‘Sky Tower’ – This variety of the Ginkgo will grow 15’ to 20’ in height and 6’ to 8’ in width. Since it is columnar, it is great for small places in your
landscape. This variety does not produce fruit and can be grown in a large container, adding an upright, colorful accent to your yard. You may have to order this plant online.
Dwarf Ginkgo – There are three varieties of this Ginkgo: Rocky, Bullwinkle, and Meriken . These beauties have the same gold fall color with fan-shaped leaves. They only grow 3’ to 5’ in height and width. These varieties are slow growers and excellent for containers. They will survive the winter, so plant in a container that will not break in cold weather. Water every ten days. You can order these online.
Eve’s Necklace – This small tree is a Texas native that grows 20’ in height and 15’ in width. It has fruit
pods that look like a black beaded necklace. This plant is very heat and drought-tolerant. The leaves are pinnately compound dark green. In the spring, it produces rose pink fragrant flowers. This tree will grow in full sun or partial shade. Trees grown in the shade will be smaller, but they are great understory trees (trees that grow in the shade of larger trees) and can be grown in large containers.
Smoketree ‘Winecraft Black’ – This smoke tree is fabulous for smaller gardens, growing to a height of 4’ and a width of 6’. It is an excellent “attention getter” in small yards, as its leaves are a rich dark purple to near black in the summer, and its blooms are purplish-pink. It does best in full or partial sun, and it is a great container plant but will also be well planted in beds.
Smoketree ‘Velvet Fog’ –This variety of smoke trees is one of the showiest plants. It has red and pink plumes that are colorful every summer. The blue-green foliage also adds interest when the plant is not in bloom. The plant is deciduous with a height of 5’ to 6’ and 6’ width. It can grow in full to partial sun, and this beauty can create interest in beds or containers. It is a show-stopper.
American Beauty Berry – This plant is native to the southern part of the United States. It grows 3’ to 5’ in height and width. This plant is all about the colorful berries. It can grow in full sun or partial shade. Even though deciduous, it will add beauty to your landscape
during the growing season. Consider planting the standard variety with purple berries or purchase ‘Alba’ with white berries or ‘Welch’s Pink’ with pink berries. The Beauty Berry performs best when it is cut back in the spring to a height of 12”. Then, sit back and watch the show.
Turk’s Cap – This is a great native plant to grow in your yard if you like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. This plant can survive in sun or shade. It is deciduous and very drought-tolerant. It flowers in the summer with small but spectacular red flowers and can grow to a height of 6’, but I recommend cutting back every spring to 12’’ to keep the plant shorter and showier. You can also choose ‘Pam’s Pink’
for pink flowers. Either color will add beauty to your landscape.
Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’ – Nothing says the south like a magnolia. This variety is a beautiful, small
evergreen that is great for smaller yards. It has all the characteristics of the larger magnolias, just a smaller version. It is a very compact Southern magnolia that features an upright form with white summer blossoms and shiny green leaves with heavy, velvety reddish undersides. The leaves are 6” to 9” long and 4” to 6” wide, growing to 15’ and 20’ in height and 8’ to 12’ in width. It prefers full to partial sun and is a great accent tree for your landscape.
This beauty is a compact shrub with vibrant coralorange foliage that turns ruby red if grown in full sun. It is deciduous but very cold, heat, and drought tolerant. This plant can create a vertical element
along borders, landscape beds, or containers. Plant it in full sun for the best color display. This visually stunning plant will grow 3’ to 4’ in height and 2’ in width. You will not be disappointed with this plant. It has been over-wintered in a container in my backyard, and I water it every 10 to 14 days.
These ten unique plants can add interest with shape, color, or texture to your yard. While these plants may be difficult to locate, they are worth the hunt. Remember to look online if you cannot find them in local nurseries. Happy gardening! ◀
