Founded in 1999, Troop Industrial started out as a small fastener supplier working out of a portable building at the owners house; pulling an enclosed trailer from job to job. Through hard work and perseverance, Troop Industrial has grown to a thriving industrial fastener supply house with THREE LOCATIONS covering the industrial Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.

As we step into 2025, our fourth year as an organization, I want to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared and the exciting opportunities ahead. Together, we’ve built a community driven by strength, resilience, and a shared mission of empowering veterans in business.

It is an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Board alongside passionate individuals who represent the best of veteran leadership. As we grow, we are focused on making 2025 a transformative year by building excellence in three key areas:

is the foundation of any successful organization. This year, we are prioritizing streamlined communication strategies to enhance member engagement, improve outreach, and ensure every veteran business owner feels connected and supported.

• Infrastructure and People Ready for Growth:

To prepare for the next stage of our evolution, we are investing in our operational systems, leadership development, and member support services. This focus will position HRVCC for sustainable growth and ensure we are ready to serve an expanding veteran business community.

• Grant Readiness:

Securing funding through grants is essential to expanding our impact. We are committed to enhancing our grant-writing capabilities and aligning our programs to meet funding opportunities, enabling us to deliver even greater value to our members.

These priorities will amplify the impact of our signature programs, including the Veteran Business Growth Academy, which continues to provide strategic tools and insights to help veteran leaders excel. Additionally, we will strengthen our member value by fostering targeted networking opportunities and building a cohesive ecosystem for veteran entrepreneurs.

I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities HRVCC offers. Whether you are a long-time member or new to the Chamber, this is your year to thrive. Together, we will continue to empower one another and showcase the strength and innovation of veteran business leaders in the Houston community and beyond.

VISION

Vision for an Empowered Veteran Business Economy

Veteran + Empowerment + Purpose = SUCCESS

When I think Veteran, I think success about the Veteran Business Economy, I am inspired by all the amazing Veteran Owned Businesses & Entrepreneurs out there that are doing some amazing work, contributing to their communities and adding to the economy. While envisioning your Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce (HRVCC) in 2035, I see an organization that has fundamentally transformed the way Americans view and support veteran-owned businesses. What started as a community initiative in the Houston area has grown into a national force for change—a blueprint for how communities, corporations, and

governments can collaborate to create lasting economic impact for veterans.

This vision isn’t just a dream; it’s a roadmap. Here’s what the future looks like for your HRVCC:

A Nationally Recognized Leader

By 2035, we’ll be recognized as the premier organization for veteran business advocacy and economic development, setting the standard for veterans chambers of commerce across the country.

Our reputation will extend far beyond Texas. Cities and states nationwide will look to HRVCC as a model for fostering veteran entrepreneurship and creating robust ecosystems that empower veteran businesses to thrive.

Economic Powerhouse

In 2035, HRVCC will stand as a key economic driver in the Texas & Houston region and beyond. Through our advocacy efforts, we’ll have influenced major corporations and government agencies to adopt intentional veteran spend goals, ensuring that at least 5 to 15% of procurement budgets are dedicated to veteran-owned businesses.

Our data-driven approach will provide clear metrics on the economic contributions of veteran-owned businesses, demonstrating their impact on city, county & state GDP, job creation, and improving the community we live in. These numbers won’t just tell a story—they’ll shape policies and inspire action.

A Thriving Ecosystem for Veterans

The HRVCC of 2035 will be an opportunity model of collaboration, bringing together veteran businesses, corporations, nonprofits, and educational institutions. We’ll be the bridge that connects veteran entrepreneurs with the resources they need to grow and scale their businesses.

Key components of this ecosystem will include:

• High value resource Network

Connections to resources that solve business challenges and those resources that connect them to opportunities for businesses. Americans will intentionally buy and source from identified Veteran Owned Businesses.

• Veteran Business Marketplaces

Partnerships with EXPOs and major events to showcase veteran businesses and connect them directly with customers and clients.

• Training and Development

Access to world-class business training programs tailored to veterans, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to succeed.

• Mentorship Networks

A thriving network of veteran mentors and business leaders offering guidance, support, and connections.

Changing the Narrative

For decades, veterans have been seen primarily through the lens of charity. By 2035, HRVCC will have completely flipped that narrative to one of success. Veterans will be celebrated as leaders, innovators, and economic powerhouses. Success stories from our members will inspire not only the veteran community but also the broader public, showcasing what’s possible when veterans are empowered & given an opportunity of purpose.

This shift will create a ripple effect, encouraging more veterans to broaden their horizons, pursue entrepreneurship and inspire others to support veteran-owned businesses.

A Legacy of Leadership

HRVCC’s leadership team will remain steadfast in its commitment to the mission. The Decision Flow Matrix, a tool we’ve adopted to ensure continued alignment with our core values and goals, will guide us as we navigate opportunities and challenges. By fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and accountability, we’ll continue to set the standard for effective leadership.

Our leaders will also serve as advocates, working tirelessly to influence legislation, secure grants, and build partnerships that drive the veteran business agenda & veteran success forward. Your HRVCC will be known not just for what we’ve accomplished but for how we’ve led the way.

The Path to 2035

This vision for 2035 isn’t just about where we’re going—it’s about how we’ll get there. Every step forward will require the dedication and commitment of our members, leaders, and partners. Together, we’ll:

• Advocate for veteran-owned businesses at every level of government, industry & community.

• Build a research arm to collect and share data on the state of the veteran economy.

• Expand our membership and create more opportunities for collaboration and growth.

• Tell the stories that matter, changing perceptions and inspiring urgency & action.

ONE TEAM - ONE MISSION

THE STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE

Why Veterans Make Exceptional Business Partners

In military service, phrases like “No one left behind” and “I got your six” are more than just motivational quotes—they represent a fundamental philosophy that shapes every action and decision. This mindset, forged in high-stakes environments from battlefield operations to submarine crisis management, translates remarkably well into the business world, particularly when it comes to building strategic partnerships.

Veterans understand deeply that survival and success depend on mutual support. Whether protecting a fellow service member who’s had one too many drinks during shore leave or backing up a teammate in combat, military personnel internalize the principle that today’s assistance may be tomorrow’s salvation. This ingrained philosophy of reciprocal support and loyalty carries forward into their business practices, creating a unique approach to professional relationships.

In the civilian business world, veterans apply this collaborative mindset to building strategic partnerships - relationships that leverage shared customer bases and complementary services to create mutual benefit. They recognize that business success, like military operations, rarely comes from solo efforts. Instead, it requires a network of reliable partners working in concert toward common goals. Consider the practical applications: A veteran-owned real estate business naturally seeks alliances with trusted plumbers, electricians, and house painters, creating a comprehensive service network for clients. In the luxury travel sector, successful

partnerships might include executive administrative assistants, event planners, and custom clothing manufacturers - all professionals who interface with clients planning significant trips or celebrations. What sets veterans apart in these business relationships is their strategic approach to partnership. Military training instills the ability to analyze situations holistically, identifying potential allies and creating networks that multiply effectiveness. This strategic thinking extends beyond simple referral relationships to true collaborative partnerships where each party’s success strengthens the whole network.

Veterans bring a unique perspective to business partnerships: they understand that mutual success requires active engagement and support. Just as military units depend on each other for survival and mission success, veteran business owners actively work to promote their partners’ success, sharing opportunities within their networks and creating reciprocal value relationships. The military’s collaborative ethos—where unit success takes precedence over individual achievement—translates into a business approach that prioritizes long-term partnership value over short-term individual gain. This mindset makes veterans particularly valuable business partners, as they inherently understand that their success is intertwined with the success of their strategic allies. This approach to business partnership, grounded in military values of loyalty, mutual support, and strategic thinking, offers a compelling model for business collaboration. When you partner with a veteran-owned business, you’re not just gaining a business connection - you’re joining a network built on proven principles of mutual support and strategic cooperation.

In today’s interconnected business environment, the veteran’s approach to partnership, shaped by military service and proven under the most challenging conditions, offers a powerful template for building resilient, successful business relationships. Their commitment to mutual success, strategic thinking, and unwavering support makes veterans not just good business partners, but exceptional ones.

Why Every Veteran Business Owner Needs the Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce

Andy Valadez

Marine Marketer

Marketing Strategist of Marketing Dynamics (AI Agency)

As a veteran, you’ve already demonstrated discipline, resilience, and leadership— qualities that make for a strong business owner. But even the most battle-tested leaders know that success in business, like success in the military, is never a solo mission. You need a team, resources, and a strategy. That’s where the Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce (HRVCC) comes in.

The Power of the Chamber: Your Unit in Business

The HRVCC isn’t just another networking group—it’s your strategic force multiplier in business. We bring together veteran entrepreneurs who understand your journey and can help you grow, scale, and sustain your business. Whether you are just launching your company or are an experienced entrepreneur looking to expand, the HRVCC provides access to mentorship, training, and partnerships that give you a competitive edge.

Think of it this way: in the military, you relied on logistics, intelligence, and a wellorganized chain of command to complete your mission. In business, the same principles apply—except now, your mission is profitability and sustainable growth.

The E-Myth and Why Business Owners Struggle to Scale

Many entrepreneurs fail because they don’t understand the three critical roles they must play in their business: the Technician, the Manager, and the Entrepreneur, as explained in The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. Too many business owners get trapped working in their business instead of working on it.

• The Technician does the work (the product or service).

• The Manager organizes, systematizes, and ensures operations run smoothly.

• The Entrepreneur is the visionary who grows the business.

If you only focus on being a Technician— delivering your service or making your product—you’ll never scale your business. The HRVCC helps veteran business owners transition into the Manager and Entrepreneur mindset by providing resources in sales, marketing, administration, operations, and leadership.

Content, Sales, Upselling, and Follow-Up: The Formula for Growth

Your business success depends on four critical areas:

1. Content Creation – Your brand must tell a story, educate your audience, and establish authority. Blogs, videos, public relations, Marketing AI (automation), and social media posts position you as the expert.

2. Sales Training – Every business needs revenue to survive. Learning how to sell effectively and close deals with confidence is crucial.

3. Upselling & Retention – The best customers are the ones you already have.

4. Follow-Up & Relationship Building –Business growth depends on follow-up.

The chamber can open you up to dynamics connections that can change the trajectory of your business vision.

Join the HRVCC Today – Your Business Needs You, Our Membership Needs You Success in business, like success in the military, requires continuous learning, adaptability, and the right team. The Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce exists to ensure veteran entrepreneurs have every tool, connection, and strategy necessary to thrive.

Whether it’s strategic marketing, sales training, operational support, or leadership development, HRVCC is here to help you build, grow, and scale your business. Join us today and take the next step in your mission to success!

3 Common Mistakes New Business Owners Make BUSINESS

michael@goodrichfinancialadvisory.com

Launching and running a successful business is an exciting and often rewarding journey, but it also comes with challenges that can be overwhelming without proper preparation. There are several pitfalls that new business owners frequently encounter as they build their ventures, each of which can hinder progress if not addressed early on.

1. Neglecting Proper Accounting Practices

One of the biggest mistakes many small business owners make is failing to implement an accounting system suited to their specific operational needs. Accounting services are not a one-size-fits-all solution; they vary widely depending on your industry, business model, and growth stage. For instance, a construction company and a marketing firm, even with similar revenue levels, may need entirely different accounting approaches due to distinct regulatory and operational requirements. Selecting an accounting service that understands the unique characteristics of your business helps ensure organized financial records and avoids unpleasant surprises come tax season. Proactive financial management is essential for peace of mind and for minimizing the risk of costly errors and penalties.

2. Over-Leveraging Through Debt

Taking on too much debt to fund or

sustain your business can quickly become a significant burden, especially in today’s financial climate. The “cheap money” era is over, and businesses now face a more challenging economic environment, with higher interest rates and tighter lending conditions. Relying heavily on loans or credit lines, especially at high interest rates, can strain cash flow and restrict the ability to invest in growth. It’s crucial for business owners to assess whether they can manage debt levels sustainably, considering today’s more restrictive financial environment. Focusing on strong cash management and lean operations can provide greater stability without over-relying on borrowed funds.

3. Prioritizing Viral Growth Over Sustainable Strategy

Social media and digital marketing have made it easier than ever to attract attention, but the allure of “going viral” can sometimes overshadow essential business fundamentals. While visibility is important, ensuring that your product or service is well-developed and ready to meet market demand is even more critical. Additionally, focusing solely on customer acquisition without considering the long-term value of those customers can lead to cash flow issues. If customer acquisition costs exceed the lifetime value of your customer base, the business may struggle to achieve profitability. Prioritize customer retention and satisfaction alongside acquisition for a balanced approach that supports sustainable growth.

In uncertain economic conditions, cash flow management is paramount. Patience and a measured approach are invaluable—allow the market to engage with your business organically without overstretching your resources. With a solid financial foundation and a clear strategy, you can build resilience in your business and navigate periods of economic volatility with confidence.

Each business’s needs are unique, and the complexity of financial and tax regulations requires professional advice tailored to your circumstances. In every industry, trust is a cornerstone of successful partnerships. But when it comes to security, trust takes on an even deeper meaning. It’s not just about contracts or deliverables… it’s about knowing that the people responsible for protecting your assets, employees, and operations are equipped to handle anything that comes their way.

At GPI Defense, this trust is rooted in a culture of service, discipline, and reliability - qualities that stem directly from the company’s veteran-owned identity.

GPI Defense is proud to say that over 70% of its personnel come from veteran and law enforcement backgrounds. This isn’t just a statistic - it’s a testament to the company’s commitment to excellence and its belief in the unparalleled skill sets these professionals bring to the table.

Veterans and former law enforcement officers understand what it means to stay calm under pressure, execute plans with precision, and adapt to evolving challenges. These are the same qualities that GPI Defense leverages to ensure every client’s security needs are met - on time, every time.

But GPI Defense’s commitment goes beyond hiring veterans… it’s about creating a team that shares a collective sense of duty and accountability.

This mission-driven mindset is what sets GPI Defense apart, allowing clients in industries like oil & gas, retail, and construction to operate with confidence, knowing their security is in the hands of proven professionals.

and Confidence

Why Hiring Veterans & Veteran Business Owners Matters

When you hire GPI Defense, you’re not just getting a security provider, but you’re gaining a team that’s been battle-tested in the most demanding environments.

Veterans bring a unique blend of skills that can’t be taught in a classroom. They’ve honed their ability to make quick, sound decisions in high-stakes situations, maintain composure under pressure, and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. These traits are invaluable in the world of security, where every moment counts.

For industries like oil & gas, retail, and construction - where safety, compliance, and operational continuity are nonnegotiable - veterans offer a level of reliability and professionalism that’s hard to match. Their training and experience translate directly into proactive risk assessment, effective conflict resolution, and seamless communication with stakeholders at all levels.

GPI Defense’s commitment to hiring veterans is also about giving back. These services empower industries to navigate emergencies with confidence and implement best practices to safeguard their operations.

Reliability Backed by an On-Time Guarantee

In the security industry, reliability isn’t just

an expectation - it’s a necessity.

At GPI Defense, this standard is upheld with an unwavering commitment to punctuality and performance. The company’s “on-time guarantee” isn’t just a promise… it’s a reflection of the precision and accountability instilled in its team members, many of whom honed these traits during their military or law enforcement careers.

This reliability has been a game-changer for clients across industries, especially those in oil & gas and construction, where delays can have significant financial and operational impacts.

Whether it’s mobilizing for a disaster response effort, providing comprehensive training sessions, or deploying onsite security teams, GPI Defense ensures its clients’ needs are met with the highest level of efficiency.

And the company’s dedication to excellence hasn’t gone unnoticed.

GPI Defense is a proud recipient of the HRVCC’s (Houston Regional Veterans Chamber) Award of Excellence, the Texas Governor’s Small Business Outstanding Small Business Innovation Award and has been named a Top 10 Emergency Services Provider. These accolades underscore the company’s commitment to delivering exceptional service and innovative solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs.

Additionally, GPI Defense has achieved remarkable recognition in the API Capacity Building Program, where it ranked in the top 5% of its class by successfully closing all 88 criteria gaps. This accomplishment underscores the company’s commitment to meeting the highest industry standards, a fact that resonates particularly with oil & gas and energy sector clients who recognize the importance of API certification.

Leadership Spotlight: COO Kyle Graham

Behind every great team is a leader who exemplifies the values and vision of the organization.

At GPI Defense, one of those leaders is Chief Operations Officer Kyle Graham. With an extensive background in the Department of Defense and DIA, Kyle brings a wealth of experience in operational planning, crisis management, and largescale security coordination.

Kyle’s career has taken him to some of the most challenging environments in the

world, where he was responsible for ensuring the safety and success of critical missions. This experience has given him a unique ability to anticipate risks, develop proactive strategies, and manage complex logistics - skills that directly benefit GPI Defense’s clients.

Under Kyle’s leadership, GPI Defense continues to refine its approach to security and emergency services, ensuring that the company remains at the forefront of the industry.

His dedication to excellence is evident in every aspect of the organization, from the rigorous training programs he oversees to the client-focused solutions he helps implement.

Championing Veteran Entrepreneurs: Collaboration, Impact, and Growth

Amy Reid Director of Galveston County SBDC

Veteran entrepreneurs represent a cornerstone of the American small business landscape, bringing discipline, leadership, and the ability to thrive under pressure— skills honed through their military service. Recognizing these qualities, the University of Houston Texas Gulf Coast Small Business Development Center Network (UH SBDC Network) is dedicated to empowering veteran entrepreneurs across the Greater Houston area and beyond, ensuring they have the resources, support, and connections needed to succeed.

One key element of this effort is the network’s strategic partnership with the Houston Regional Veterans Chamber of Commerce (HRVCC).

“Our partnership with HRVCC, formalized through a Strategic Alliance Memorandum nearly two years ago, has been a game-changer,” said Amy Reid, Director of the Galveston County SBDC. “It’s allowed us to deepen our collaboration and cross-promotion efforts, ensuring veterans have seamless access to vital business resources and opportunities.”

Driving Impact Through Collaboration

The partnership has yielded impressive results. In 2024, the UH SBDC Network

worked with numerous veteran entrepreneurs, contributing to 34 new business starts, 190 new jobs, and $10.4M in capital impact.

“We pride ourselves on our ability to track and support veteran-owned businesses, including those owned by service-disabled veterans and military spouses,” said Reid. “These metrics reflect our commitment to fostering a thriving veteran entrepreneurship ecosystem.”

The network’s influence extends beyond numbers. In May 2024, the UH SBDC Network hosted the semi-annual Veterans Business Community Leaders Roundtable at its regional office in Houston. This pivotal event brought together over 50 leaders, including representatives from the mayor’s office, state legislators, business owners, and lenders. The discussions were instrumental in strengthening the veteran business ecosystem and fostering new opportunities for collaboration.

Engagement Through Events and Education

The UH SBDC Network’s commitment to veterans is evident through its active participation in HRVCC events. Both Apex’s Program Director, Tim Healy, and Reid have represented the network at the semi-annual

roundtables; and Reid has even presented at the HRVCC’s business EXPOs in 2022 and 2023. Her sessions, focused on dynamic business planning and marketing solutions, attracted more than 20 participants each and provided invaluable insights to veteran entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the network’s advisors have hosted booths at veteran-focused expos, offering one-on-one advising and connecting veterans with tailored resources.

“Our goal is to ensure veterans have the tools they need to overcome challenges and thrive in business,” Reid said.

Expanding the Reach

Looking ahead, the UH SBDC Network is poised to expand its veteran-focused initiatives. Plans include establishing a Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Lamar State College-Port Arthur SBDC, making resources more accessible to veterans in that region. In January 2025, the network will host a comprehensive Business Information Session for Veterans, bringing together the SBA, VBOC, and SBDC to provide holistic support under one roof.

Empowering Veterans to Thrive

“The qualities that make veterans exceptional service members—adaptability, strategic thinking, and mission-driven focus—are the same qualities that make them extraordinary entrepreneurs,” said Reid. “We are committed to ensuring these individuals have every opportunity to succeed.”

With strong partnerships like the one with HRVCC and ongoing initiatives to support veteran entrepreneurs, the UH SBDC Network is building a brighter future for veterans and their communities.

Reid said, “Our message to veterans is simple: your service to our country has equipped you with invaluable skills for business success, and we’re here to help you every step of the way.”

Together, with HRVCC and other partners, the UH SBDC Network is shaping a more vibrant and empowered veteran business community across Texas.

The UH SBDC Network comprises 14 center locations serving 32+ counties throughout the Texas Gulf Coast area: For small business resources, visit SBDC.uh.edu.

Patrick E. Alcorn

For years, the phrase “Thank you for your service” has been a common greeting for veterans. While I appreciate the sentiment, my usual response has often been met with a shift in tone, as the well-intentioned greeter begins to contemplate the prevailing narrative: that veterans are inherently wounded and in need of help.

This misdirected offer of condolence is based on a distorted image of veterans, often reinforced by media portrayals and the prevailing narrative that we are wounded warriors, homeless heroes, or individuals challenged with visible or invisible wounds of war fought on battlefields in distant or foreign lands. What these greeters may not realize is that our service did not end when we took off the uniform. We are more than the challenges we may have faced; we are capacity builders who continue to serve our nation with an exceptional blend of leadership, resilience, and innovation in a variety of ways.

Veterans are entrepreneurs. As of 2023, there were approximately 1.4 million veteranowned businesses in the United States, employing over 11 million people. These businesses contribute significantly to the U.S. economy, generating an estimated $1.2 trillion in annual revenue.

Your Houston Regional Veterans Chamber (HRVCC) & the Veterans Business Outreach Center University of Texas

Arlington (UTAVBOC) is actively changing this narrative. BBBC is an annual business development and entrepreneur educational experience specifically designed for the military-connected entrepreneur ecosystem.

BBBC is more than a social gathering. It’s a professionally curated business-tobusiness networking opportunity, showcase for small businesses run by veterans, and an educational symposium to equip veterans with the tools and resources they need to thrive in the business world.

Let’s change the narrative. Veterans are actively serving in a wide range of industries, including professional services, retail, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, and more. They are critical thinkers, problem solvers, founders, franchisees, and independent business owners, contributing to the economic growth of their communities. As veteran-owned businesses continue to thrive, they will play a vital role in shaping the future of America. Perhaps, this Veteran’s Day, we can shift our focus from the wounds of war to the strengths of those who served and continue to serve in a business beyond the battlefield. Let’s celebrate the contributions of veterans to our nation both then and now.

Facing the Unexpected as an Owner-Operator or Business Leader

Jonathan Campos

As both a business owner and former firefighter, I’ve learned that surprises are a part of the job, whether you’re handling things solo or leading a team. In firefighting, every shift prepared us for the unknown. As a business owner, preparation, flexibility, and clear communication are just as critical, regardless of your business structure. For owner-operators, the responsibility of dealing with unexpected events falls squarely on your shoulders. Like a

firefighter preparing gear and planning responses, you must anticipate potential risks by keeping finances in check, setting aside time for problem-solving, and maintaining a support network of trusted advisors or fellow business owners. This solo readiness ensures you can tackle challenges head-on without missing a beat.

For those leading teams, preparing for the unexpected requires training, trust, and role clarity. Just as firefighting crews train for each member’s role in an emergency, business teams benefit from well-defined roles and responsibilities. Equip your team to make decisions and adapt if you’re unavailable or if a situation demands immediate action.

Adaptability is key, whether you’re a team of one or managing others. In firefighting, changing conditions call for fast, confident decisions. In business, this means being open to pivoting strategies, adjusting service offerings, or rethinking daily operations to meet new demands.

Communication is vital. As a solo operator, staying connected with clients

and suppliers keeps relationships strong when things go awry. With a team, communication ensures everyone remains aligned and ready to take on changes together. Keep communication channels open so that information flows freely, even under pressure.

Finally, reflection after any unexpected event is crucial. Just as we debrief after every firefight, take time to evaluate what worked, what didn’t, and how to be better prepared next time—whether you’re on your own or with a team.

VETERAN BUSINESS AWARDS

Fellow veterans, and supporters,

It is a tremendous honor to address you today as a new invested member of your HRVCC.

As an 8-year U.S. Air Force veteran and a proud business owner, I want to share my journey and emphasize the importance of celebrating veteran-owned businesses (VOBs) and what they represent.

When I first arrived in the United States as an immigrant, I was driven by a strong desire to prove my place in this great country. I thought, “If I serve in the military, no one can ever question my right to be here!” Reflecting on my military service, I often say that the military has served me more than I served it.

It provided me with shelter, sustenance, and a vocation that led to a rewarding 21 years in the medical field. I often joke that joining the Air Force was the best decision I ever made— right after mastering the art of folding my underwear into perfect six-inch squares! Through my service, I learned the true meaning of values like honor, integrity, and respect. These weren’t just words; they were principles we lived by daily. Today, I still make my bed each morning, align my shoes, and ensure my gig line is straight. You could say I have a bit of a “military aesthetic”—my closet could pass for a recruiting office!

What I cherish most is the camaraderie and brotherhood we share as veterans. I vividly remember my service during the

invasion of Grenada when we, the Airmen, often found ourselves in playful rivalry with the Marines. During one memorable night at the Airmen Club, I heard “I’m Proud to Be an American” for the first time, and everything changed. In that moment, I was no longer just an immigrant; I was part of something greater—a united front of Airmen, Marines, Soldiers, and Sailors, all proud Americans.

Despite my reservations about calling myself a veteran-owned business, I recognized the necessity of promoting VOBs. Many veterans, including myself, have benefited immensely from our military training. This is what makes VOBs unique and deserving of recognition. Who better to understand this than veterans themselves?

Celebrating veteran-owned businesses is not merely an act of honoring our past but a means to showcase the unique strengths and values we offer. Here’s what makes VOBs stand out.

Veterans are trained to see tasks through to completion. When we commit to deliver, we do so with unwavering resolve. Just like when I worked as an edge impact weapons specialist—if I say it will cut, you can be sure it will be sharp!

Our experiences in the field equip us to lead and make quick decisions, invaluable skills in business. We’ve faced challenges far greater than a mere printer running out of ink!

We know that every role matters in a veteran-owned business, just like in the military. If you need help, just ask; we’ll be there faster than you can say “Hoorah!”

Many veterans are dedicated to giving back to their communities. We understand the value of support and service, striving to make a positive impact wherever we can. Our military service is about family, community, and country and our training fosters adaptability and creative thinking. In my journey as a blade designer and military combatives contractor, I learned to think outside the box. This creativity has translated into my business, where we create iconic weapons inspired by our military history.

I owe my success to my military service. It honed my craft and led me to become a judge on the show “Forged in Fire,” where we honor veterans by creating iconic weapons. Our special episodes spotlight the incredible contributions of veterans, showcasing that we are not just survivors but thrivers, forging our paths in business and life.

By celebrating veteran-owned businesses, we dismantle the stigma that suggests all veterans are broken. We are resilient, capable, and ready to contribute to our communities. Supporting a VOB means investing in honor, commitment, and a shared vision for a brighter future.

Let us continue to uplift and recognize the remarkable contributions of veteran-owned businesses. Together, we can forge a strong community and an even stronger nation. Aim high, and let’s make a difference together! Thank you for this opportunity to speak.
