FROM MARGIE’S DESK Kia ora koutou It’s been a busy time for CM Health as we move into winter this year. The hospital has been very full throughout autumn and we are working on our winter plan which includes adding inpatient capacity to ensure we are able to care for the additional patients we expect during the winter months. This year we will be opening an extra 41 beds along with recruiting additional staff to support this capacity.

We have also recently begun the community rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination programme following on from the Border and Healthcare workforce rollout. This is the largest vaccination programme in New Zealand’s history and by mid-June we will have six dedicated vaccination sites across the CM Health district, with the ability to vaccinate over 3000 people per day.

Alongside this we are working with local GP practices and community pharmacies around South Auckland to enable them to provide COVID-19 vaccinations even closer to peoples’ homes. There are currently nine GP practices in South Auckland providing COVID-19 vaccinations and this number will increase rapidly over the coming weeks.

In line with the Ministry of Health sequencing framework, we are currently vaccinating our older Maaori and Pacific people, those aged over 65, and people with underlying health conditions. The vaccine is a crucial element in the fight against COVID-19, to protect our communities and all of New Zealand – please encourage those you know who are eligible to book in. If you know someone who sits in these groups who hasn’t been invited they can call Healthline on 0800 28 29 26.

We’re now also well underway with our flu vaccination programme so if you are eligible for a flu vaccine please ensure that you also receive this – just remember that you need to leave two weeks in between your COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

We are in a very fortunate position in relation to COVID-19 in New Zealand, but many other countries have had a much different experience as we have recently seen with the situation in India. Our thoughts are with those who have family and friends overseas.

Finally, it’s important we all continue to take care of ourselves and each other during winter – there is lots of wellbeing support available. If you are a staff member, visit Paanui where you can find lots of great resources. Externally there are several organisations which provide support to people who need it; the Ministry of Health COVID-19 Mental Health and Wellbeing page also has many excellent resources.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there; it’s about giving clear instruction. My conversation with them is ‘you will be going to work every day, you’ve got children or mokopuna at home, and you don’t know where your mates have been."

All the action at Polyfest 2021 Manukau Sports Bowl came alive with the return of ASB Polyfest in April. Rangatahi from secondary schools across Auckland came together to celebrate their culture through performance and whaikoorero.

As a gold sponsor for the festival, CM Health was at the heart of all the action, encouraging rangatahi to look at health as a career, as well as promoting the importance of getting immunised against measles.

Our volunteers spoke with many rangatahi and their whaanau across the four festival days.

“It was a great opportunity to talk with young people around health careers. Seeing the interest from their parents, friends and relatives was really insightful.

I want to acknowledge and thank all our volunteers who helped with this initiative. Your efforts can make a difference in influencing more Maaori and Pacific youth to choose health as a career," says General Manager, Pacific Health Development Doana Fatuleai.

“In total, we did 337 measles immunisation status checks, with 93 rangatahi being administered the MMR vaccine. I want to acknowledge all the work and support from the project team, our external partners the Totem Pharmacy Group and Moana Research, and staff from teams across our organisation. Acknowledgement also to our Waikato Tainui Iwi partners for the use of their Te Hiwa o Tainui trailer.”

CM Health will be partnering with ASB Polyfest again next year. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Putting their best feet forward!

StepUp is a professional development course that we run four times a year to help our staff improve their communication skills and gain confidence.

The course, designed to support the development of our non-regulated staff, has been on offer at CM Health since around 2011. It teaches important aspects of communication such as body language, literacy, numeracy, and problemsolving, as well as learning about kiwi-isms. Group discussions and activities help to build confidence and strengthen teamwork in the group.

At the end of the course, students are presented their certificates at a graduation to celebrate their success.

“The favourite part of my job is seeing the StepUp group on their first day, looking shy and apprehensive, and then on the last day of the course, they look confident and like one big happy family. Hearing their speeches about how the course improved their confidence and made a positive difference in their work and, more importantly, in their life, always brings happy tears to my eyes,” says Jackie Danes, People Development Advisor.

Di Lemm, People Development Consultant, agrees with Jackie’s sentiments, adding “I am impressed by the group's courage to embark on learning, and love seeing the huge personal growth from our StepUp students.”

“English is my third language and the course helped me put what i am thinking in my head into words. The course opened us up. It is an opportunity to learn about communicating with managers and other people in your personal and professional lives. After completing this course, you start to see the bigger picture and start mind mapping to sort out any problems to achieve a win-win situation. Celebrating our staff It was a proud moment as CEO Margie Apa, our wonderful sponsors, invited family, and colleagues gathered in Ko Awatea to congratulate the winners from this year's Staff Awards.

The audience was treated to a performance by our kapa haka group before Muru Maipi opened the celebrations as MC. Margie Apa presented awards to the winners, along with sponsors for the event: Elixir, Fisher & Paykel, Middlemore Hospital Florist, Ola Bowl, Columbus Coffee, Subway, Vodafone NZ, Middlemore Clinical Trials and Fuku Sushi.

“It was such an honour to be named the Local Hero Supreme winner,” says Jack Tutuvanu. “I was shocked, speechless really, as I’m just doing my job. It’s the people that make this job. At the end of the day, when you see so many sick people and sick kids, when I can walk out and say to my colleagues, ‘see you tomorrow’, I always count my blessings.”

Barrio Fiesta: Celebrating Filipino Culture

This year, for the first time in Counties Manukau Health, we celebrated Barrio Fiesta. Barrio Fiesta means 'Neighbourhood Celebration' in Spanish, and in the Philippines it is a festival often filled with food, music and street parades where neighbours get together and visit each other to celebrate their communities and patron saints. With over 600 Filipino staff working in CM Health, it was a great opportunity to learn more about the Filipino culture and celebrate our diversity.

Our staff celebrated by sharing food, their experiences with Barrio Fiesta and what this event means to them. Almost 200 staff also participated in our cultural quiz and our partners from eCald® training shared their cross-cultural education resources and ran quizzes at the Manukau Health Park. AGAINST B SSMENT AND HARA In 2019 we undertook an organisation-wide employee survey and while we saw some really great results on how staff feel about working at Counties, it was of concern to learn that 20% of our people felt they had experienced bullying or harassment at work. While this percentage figure was relatively low compared with other similar organisations, it was, nonetheless, not acceptable to CM Health. Why? Because we are committed to a workplace where everyone has the right to work in an environment that is free from sexual, racial, or any other type of harassment or workplace bullying - and this is where our Speak Up programme comes in.

Despite the restrictions imposed on us through the COVID pandemic, a team of dedicated staff have been doing a lot of work around refreshing, updating, and making the process easier and far more straightforward for our staff to Speak Up against bullying and harassment. The key aim is to reduce these figures.

In April, we were excited to receive our ninth year of certification from Toitu, which validates our carbon measurement data.

CM Health is the first DHB in NZ to start measuring and reporting its data. Since 2012 we have reduced our emissions by 29%, which puts us in an excellent position to be able to achieve the requirement set by the government for all public sector organisations to be carbon neutral by 2025.

Men’s Health As told by Thomas Kiran Johny

I started as a Registered Nurse at Counties Manukau Health in 2009. I am now the Associate Clinical Nurse Manager here in the Emergency Department.

This is one of the busiest Emergency departments in Australasia and sadly we see a lot of preventable illnesses.

June is Men’s Health Month and 14-20 June is also Men’s Health Week - the perfect time to talk about the concerns around men’s health.

The current statistics in New Zealand show every baby boy born today will live four years less than a girl, is 20% more likely to die from a heart attack, or 30% more likely to contract diabetes when compared to his female counterpart. His chance of passing away from a trauma or suicide is three times more than a female. 12% of male suicide attempts result in death compared to 2% in female.

Heart disease is one of the major causes of fatality in men whereas prostate and testicular cancer combined account for only 4.4% of total male deaths in New Zealand a year.

Thomas Kiran Johny These statistics highlight the importance of men to look after their physical and mental wellbeing.

As a health professional, I try to create more awareness about health among men by empowering men to define what health means to them, educating and offering help to the general population to lead a healthy lifestyle.

To help address this, we have initiatives in our hospital and in the community such as the Alcohol ABC approach and smoking cessation support. It is important for men to recognise and value their health so that they can reduce their presentations to ED and stay Healthy.

Reducing ED Queues with

Emergency Q

In September 2018, Middlemore Hospital Emergency Department (ED) started trialling new technology designed to help reduce waiting times in ED for less urgent cases, freeing up resources for those who are very unwell.

Middlemore Hospital’s ED is for patients with urgent or life-threatening emergencies, but often can be crowded with non-urgent cases, especially in winter months.

Now when patients enter the Emergency Department, screens show them real-time information about the wait times and compare them to wait times at nearby Accident and Medical Centres (Urgent Care Clinics). In addition, it offers seven languages, including Te Reo Maaori, Samoan, Tongan, Hindi, Korean and Mandarin.

Elisa Hailstone, Registered Nurse and Emergency Q Coordinator, talked to us about the differences she has seen in ED.

"There were around 500 patients less this month that would have been in the ED waiting room to see a doctor. The technology has helped reduce congestion in the ED and given nurses a tool to empower clinically suitable patients to begin their journey in primary care.

"Patient feedback has been positive. In many cases, people are happy to attend Urgent Care Clinics and don’t have to wait as long as they would in ED. Patients are also reassured if they are not an emergency, and it frees up staff to concentrate on the patients with medical emergencies."

Supporting your

recovery or care Do you have a loved one who needs help caring for themselves, whether it’s because of a chronic health condition or recovering from surgery?

Our Needs Assessment Service Coordination Team (NASC) work in our hospitals and the community to meet with people and assess their care requirements.

“When I first started working in my role with the needs assessors, I was amazed at the many types of support available to help families care for their loved ones and stay at home after they have become unwell. They are very focused on arranging individual support packages that meet the needs of each person and their family/whaanau. However, suppose the time comes when the person needs more support than can be provided at home? In that case, we discuss options for residential care with the person and their whaanau/family," says TaMera Rolland, Team Manager (NASC).

The team works on a referral basis, so the first step to accessing the service is to contact your health provider. If you are in one of our hospitals or sites, we will refer you to the Needs Assessment Team to organise support as you leave hospital.

Karen’s story “My partner had a stroke, and I became his carer. Recently his health issues have gotten worse, and I am pretty much his full-time carer. At first, I tried to do it all myself, but accepting help is important when you are a carer. You need to take care of yourself too, so you can keep taking care of them.

"Thanks to the Needs Assessment Team, I was given home help and respite care time, which meant that I could take some needed breaks and get some balance in my life. Caring for a loved one is good because it allows them to stay at home, but it can be a 24/7 job and pretty stressful. I would encourage anyone who is a carer to look into these services.”

“I felt nervous having another C-section, the same way I delivered my first two babies. But I knew this time would be a little bit harder as this baby was bigger than the first two.

"My midwife was Colleen Manickum. She took me on as her client, and I felt happy and cared for. My experience with the staff at Middlemore was so cool. From the theatre where my baby was delivered, to when I went into my ward, I felt cared for.

"The anaesthetist, surgeons, and helpers were terrific at keeping me cool, calm, and collected. They were super amazing at their job.

"My superman and partner, Warren, came into the theatre with me, cut our baby’s cord, and stuck by my side. I am so happy our baby is healthy and that I'm doing ok as her mother.

We will always cherish the birth of our thirdborn baby."

“It was late at night and I had noticed pain in my leg but then it started getting worse and the redness was going up my leg. I knew something was really wrong and it was a scary time for myself and my family.

"I went into Middlemore Emergency Department. I was nervous about being in ED, but they make you feel at ease and you know they are helping you. They told me I had Cellulitis and I ended up on IV antibiotics and stayed in the wards a few days. It can be dangerous if it's not treated so I am glad I got treatment when I did.

"The nurses and all the staff were so great and really looked after me. I felt like I was in a hotel, not a hospital. I got better and went home a few days later. Thank you Middlemore Hospital."
