Welcome to the first issue of Connect+ for 2018. As always this issue is full of stories focused on the work taking place across our vast organisation and how our staff live our values each and every day.

As many of you are aware we have been actively working on a Turn Around Plan that will help identify a suite of financial initiatives that will enable us to provide more cost-effective and quality care now and in the future.

Our aim is to have a break-even budget in three years, which is why we are looking at everything we do across the health sector and asking ourselves “can we do things differently?”

With tight time-frames we have accomplished a lot and I’ve been really encouraged by the range of proposals/ suggestions put forward by our staff, health users and community partners. The commitment and support to continue to provide health services we are proud of has been inspiring to see and while we won’t be able to implement everyone’s ideas or suggestions, we will choose those that add the most value to patient care and experience. A selection of these proposals will be presented to the Board in June 2018. For an update go to the Turn Around Plan webpage on Paanui.

“People often ask me why I choose to be a Security Officer at the Maternity Ward rather than on the floor where there’s more action, but I love it here,” Robert laughs. Recent feedback forms and emails came in singing Robert’s praise about his role and we had to find out what makes him so passionate.

“I’ve worked on the Maternity Ward as a Security Officer for 12 months now. I love it because I get to interact with people - especially as an advocate for the fathers that I meet,” says Robert.

Whakawhanaungatanga is at the heart of all Robert does. “It puts us all on an equal platform; valuing others and treating patients with empathy, compassion and giving patient’s confidence in our care.”

“At Maternity we want our patients and families to feel valued.

We want them to know that their experience matters to us.

Embedding our values into our everyday work and practice will bring us closer to imparting a positive experience to all patients consistently.”

“One of the main things I’ve noticed on the ward is there’s a specific moment where the father looks slightly shocked as he’s just come from the birthing of their new-born baby. He wants to help his wife/partner as the orderly takes her to the ward, but in that moment he is unsure how to help. I see his wife/ partner look back at him reassuringly, and that’s where I step in. I’m able to provide a positive word or a simple smile and that’s all it takes,” he says.

We had some fabulous help from retired Nurses Marlene, Mary-Anne and Barbara who took some time out of their day to return to their old workplace and help our patients complete their Census forms.

Research Week is an annual Counties Manukau Health event, which celebrates and promotes the excellent and diverse range of health research undertaken across our DHB. Now in its third year, Ko Awatea will again be organising Research Week to showcase research from within the hospital, and across the community, through presentations, posters and workshops.

The call for abstracts to deliver a presentation or poster is now open until Friday 27 April, for anyone who has carried out research within Counties Manukau Health.

Research Week is a great opportunity to present your research and widen its reach. Last year the event showcased seven research workshops, 25 research presentations and 22 general research posters, as well as another 20 posters from

second year nursing students and six representing summer studentships. Get involved and you could win funding towards your next conference!

From encouraging staff to use bicycles to promoting reusable cups, we’re on a mission to be carbon neutral by 2050* The goal comes after our recent achievement of a 21.2 per cent carbon reduction over the past five years to 2017, resulting in CEMARS recertification for both Middlemore hospital and Manukau SuperClinic sites.

To recognise this success and look at the ways CM Health staff are helping to reduce its carbon footprint, Associate Health Minister the Hon Julie Anne Genter recently visited Middlemore hospital.

Ms Genter, whose visit to the hospital was the first since her appointment to the office, learned about the steps we are taking towards sustainability including promoting the use of Associate Health Minister Julie Anne Genter visits Middlemore hospital

reusable cups, resulting in a saving of more than $40,000 since 2012.

Other activities which have reduced our carbon emissions include programming computers to go sleep mode after a period of not being used and waste reduction activities.

Targeting these areas have resulted in a combined saving of $150,000.

CM Health Anaesthetist Rob Burrell has also been involved in a project looking at the impact of anaesthetic gas on the environment and has identified one option (sevoflurane) that has less impact on the environment and is cheaper to use than alternative drugs.

This has also resulted in an estimated $150,000 over the last 12 months.

Ms Genter congratulated us on the progress we’ve made and noted it was an example to other health organisations.

“It is estimated New Zealand’s healthcare sector contributes between 3 per cent and 8 per cent of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Hospitals, for example, use about twice as much total energy per square foot as traditional office space. Improving sustainability in the healthcare sector benefits the climate and human health,” she says.

The new goal of becoming carbon neutral is part of the Environmental Regeneration at CM Health 2017-2050 strategy. It covers several areas of carbon reduction including energy, travel, waste, procurement, supply chain, and green building design, with an emphasis on communicating this message to a wide audience.

Acting Chief Executive Gloria Johnson says CM Health is proud to have already reduced its carbon footprint by over 20 per cent in the last five years and the organisation’s ongoing commitment to environmental regeneration will accelerate this progress over the coming years.

“In 2015 the United Nations launched a new set of global sustainable development goals and all member states will be expected to use these to frame their domestic policies for the next 15 years. Regenerative practices ultimately improve the wellbeing of our population – through creating a healthier environment, and through saving money that can be better spent on care.”

Ms Genter’s visit highlights the fact that CM Health is on the right track, she says. *Carbon neutrality is achieved by balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset.

Working closely with the Director of Patient Care and the Executive Leadership Team, we bring the voices of our community to the heart of the organisation.

Our family have lived in Papakura since 2004.

Having five children with high health needs has meant frequent and ongoing use of the health system. Through these experiences I have learnt to be an advocate for those whose voices are not always heard. I am currently a representative on a number of health care working groups both locally and regionally. At CM Health I am a consumer representative on the Patient and Whaanau Centred Care Board (PWCC).

I moved from Tonga to Mangere eight years ago. I love the diversity and richness of the people who live here, however when it comes to looking after our health and accessing health services early, we need to raise awareness among our Pacific and Maaori communities.

I truly believe to fully understand a person you need to understand their culture. That’s the first step in helping to change minds and behaviour.

Over the past decade I have experienced our healthcare system from many angles. I have observed both heartache and joy; wins and losses. I have been the one who has provided cared and been cared for and I have been the one who has won the war against life-threatening illness. Although the acute battle is over, not a day goes by without the memories of staring death in the eyes.To me, I am a member of a community whose voice deserves to be heard - a community where each and everyone one of us can make a difference and together we will make change.

I am an art educator who has a lived experience of mental health issues and recovery. I attended Wellness Recovery Action Plan and Peer Employment Training in 2011. Upon graduation, I have been actively involved with peer support work and consumer advocacy initiatives in both the local community as well as among the Asian community in Auckland. I am privileged to be able to combine my passion in art with my lived experience of mental health in the work that I do.

Ezekiel is an experienced leader and advocate in the disability community, based in Manurewa. He is currently engaged in various governance and advisory roles, and community projects in health and disability networks within Counties Manukau and throughout Auckland.

Ezekiel is also a member of the national Health Quality & Safety Commission Consumer Network, which provides consumer input on a wide range of quality and safety programmes and activities connected to the Ministry of Health and the broader NZ health system.

Layla is of Maaori (Ngati Porou/Nga Puhi) and Niuean decent with strong ties to the Northland and Franklin regions.

Layla’s desire to improve the health outcomes of her whaanau have extended outward into the community where her efforts to support the Franklin locality can be seen.

As a resident of Pukekohe, Layla has over 10 years’ experience as a professional in the health sector, across a number of different roles in Maaori health, Public health, mental health & Addictions.

Barbara Broome has had a life-time of chronic ill health issues resulting in frequent hospitalization. I am able to contribute towards bringing about improvements in quantity and quality of life to those with chronic health conditions.

David Bryant has been a community representative on various groups for over 10 years in the Eastern locality, helping to organize public health events for their ethnically diverse community.

I also have a special interest in finding better ways for people ageing rather than just going into inevitable decline. If we continue to just do the same things in the same ways we will come up with the same results.

David has had a long-term interest in education, and was appointed by the Minister of Education to chair a Tertiary Education Commission and, later, chaired a National Standards Board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

I have established strong relationships with various groups and organisations in our community especially the Asian community.

Stella is now retired, but is on various boards and volunteers with Middlemore Foundation, Stella was recently elected to the Board of the Manurewa Local Board, a role which will enhance her passion for the community and help raise awareness that south Auckland is somewhere to be proud of.

I am particularly interested in the health of children and older people and endeavour to bring in their voice (positive feedback and suggestions) to Counties Manukau Health to help further improve health care delivery.

Passionate about people and health, I have worked over thirty years within the optometry industry. Recently I have become involved with One Sight, which is an organization that travels into remote locations within New Zealand and abroad screening school children’s eyes to supply glasses at no cost. Two years ago my son was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. This lead to major changes in our families’ lives and much ongoing involvement within the ‘health system’.

After experiencing many highs and lows, a lot has been learnt.

Raised and educated in Otara, John developed a strong social conscience which continues to support him today in his efforts toward improving overall community health and wellbeing.He performed a variety of management roles across a number of industries. Some previous employers include Housing New Zealand, Immigration New Zealand and recently Auckland Council.

John also serves as member of the OtaraMangere Localities Leadership Group.

WITH A BIT OF TEAM WORK AND PERSEVERANCE,

Anything is Possible It’s been in the pipeline since 2015, but finally, the Manukau Surgery Centre Central Sterile Supply Department or CSSD, has been revamped. CSSD has long been the hub for all things sterilisation.

Not only does the Unit supply both the SuperClinic and Operating Theatres at MSC with sterilised equipment, it’s services extend to external customers too.

Despite the five week shut down that allowed the make-over to take place, staff have adjusted to their ‘new normal’ well. The shutdown had significant impacts as it meant that a lot of the equipment from Surgery had to be transported to Middlemore hospital for processing. Staff used closed case carts which enabled the transportation of hazardous and used equipment.

The sterilized equipment was then transported back to the CSSD at MSC.

CSSD has been operating for about 20 years at MSC, and keeping the Unit running are trained and qualified technicians.

These teams are responsible for processing patient care equipment used for operating theatres, clinics, modules and various other departments. Podiatrists, GPs, independent midwives and even the Police use CSSD’s services.

Swedish company Getinge provided the equipment and the Unit’s team haven’t been happier: “The new machinery has made a huge difference to the process,” says Aileen, CSSD Manager. “It’s made the workload lighter, increased capacity in the washers, reduced the risk of manual handling injuries, and overall the machinery is easier for staff to use- it’s also amongst the latest machinery on the NZ market.”

A make-over of the Unit has been a long time coming and after some impressive teamwork and new processes for old tasks, the project is now complete. Project CSSD involved replacing essential equipment which has been around for the past 20 years! In total, two steam sterilisers, and two old batch washers (we now have five), have been replaced.

It’s been a lengthy process and required a lot of coordination and assistance from staff in various departments, but the team are very happy with the outcome. As they say, good things take time.

Knitters across the nation help keep new families warm Each day numerous boxes of knitted items arrive at the donation room in the Poutasi Link. If you’ve ever walked past you’ll see our dedicated Wool Programme volunteers Aileen and Marion sifting through the generous donations from the Knit Knatters. They’re then bundled up and delivered to young families on the Maternity and Neonatal wards as well as satellite sites across CM Health.

The Knit Knatters are made up of 600 volunteers across the nation and are a part of the Middlemore Foundation’s Wool Programme. Word of mouth has helped the programme grow, with many loyal knitters sending items in once a month.

Volunteers spend hours of their time knitting blankets, vests, cardigans, hats and booties, says Wool Programme Coordinator Diane. As a thank you for their kindness, twice a year, 100 of the Knit Knatters gather over morning tea where knitted items are showcased. “It’s also a nice opportunity

for the volunteers to share patterns they may like and get to know one another,” she says.

Every donation gets a return personalised note of thanks from Diane. The packs are then made up by duo Aileen and Marion who, when asked how long they’d been doing this for say it’s more than they can remember! Separate packs are made for boys and girls, which include enough items to help keep families warm through their first year.

“We’re so grateful to have the support of these kind volunteers, and we know it means so much to them to be able to knit and give back to the families” says Diane.

We are recycling on average 10 TONNES MORE per month.

This is equivalent to 250 more wheelie bins of recycling!

In late 2017 we surpassed our baseline target reaching 21% reduction in our emissions.

Both Middlemore hospital and Manukau SuperClinic have been recertified with the CEMARS certification.

The aim of the staff sessions are to give an oversight of where the team is up to with the Turn Around Plan, do an early 'sense check' of some of the themes that are emerging and some scenario testing. New MRI Suite IN HARLEY GRAY

In December 2017 the CM Health Board gave final approval to install two new MRI scanners on the Ground Floor of the Harley Gray Building. This will signal the beginning of a long term plan to relocate the main Radiology department to the Ground Floor of Harley Gray.

The Middlemore hospital site currently has only one MRI scanner which causes significant constraints on being able to cope with variable demand of acute scanning. It is expected that the addition of a second scanner will provide immediate improvements in the turn around time for hospital referred MRI’s. The 3T and 1.5T scanner will be co-located and this

will enable the Radiology service to provide a wider range of imaging capability on site. This will also provide faster and automated processing and better service continuity.

The new technology in the scanners, includes a wider bore hole and faster patient experience and provides higher quality images. The Radiology service is currently outsourcing approximately 2,000 MRI scans per year to meet current demand so the additional machine, with a capacity of approximately 2900 scans will enable nearly all of this imaging to be performed within CM Health.

The new scanners are anticipated to be fully operational by the end of 2018.

Help stop the spread of mumps in your community Have you and your whaanau been immunised against mumps?

There have been over 1,100 confirmed cases of mumps in the Auckland region notified to Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) since early February 2018. Mumps is a serious disease that can be spread from one person to another, and can cause serious illness.

In particular, there are low levels of immunity in our rangatahi aged 10-29. This age group is the most affected by this outbreak. Symptoms are fever, loss of appetite, pain or swelling on one or both sides of the face or neck, and sore and swollen testicles in boys/men.

“Vaccination provides the best protection against mumps. If you are unsure if you have had two mumps vaccinations, and it’s not documented with your GP, it’s free to get vaccinated.

The vaccination also protects against measles and rubella.

There are no concerns about having an extra dose of the Mumps, Measles and Rubella vaccine,” Dr Anderson says.

There has been a great deal of effort directed to ensuring young people are aware of the importance of being protected against mumps. Papatoetoe High School registered nurse Suzie King says education and prevention awareness is key.

Local health care workers are continuing to work hard to vaccinate young people to help contain the spread of mumps in our community.

“It was a collaborative effort by all staff (teachers, admin staff, Senior Leadership Team, and nurses) to ensure ARPHS guidelines were followed to prevent further cases of mumps within the school population,” King says.

Communities from Tonga, Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, and Vanuatu need to check with their family doctor as the immunisation for mumps isn’t given in these countries.

“Our school is very diverse and many of our young people were born overseas, so some didn’t have records of their immunisation status. Some of the Pacific islands don’t have mumps as part of their immunisation programme, whereas in New Zealand, we have two injections - 15 months and four years,” King says.
