Registration Guidelines

The Wildcat Academy High School Course Catalog has been prepared to assist you in your choice of classes Please read it carefully and make decisions that are best for you and your future If you have questions about the courses listed in this registration guide, please reach out to one of your teachers, a counselor or the Wildcat Academy Coordinator We want to assist you in any manner we can to ensure proper choice of classes.

Students should:

● Review all materials and information and begin to make decisions on classes they would like to request for next year

● Read the course descriptions carefully

● Check for prerequisites

● Review credit check

Select courses that meet our district and state graduation requirements, as well as support future post-secondary plans.

Discuss your plans with your parents/guardian

You are responsible for completing your registration form by the deadlines

Schedule Change Policy

Students will register for courses for the entire school year. If a student would like to change out a course, they should fill out the Schedule Change Request form. Registration deadlines/changes are due the Friday before the 1st day of the term Once the term starts, students have 5 days to change classes After 5 days, students must meet with the Wildcat Academy Coordinator to request a schedule change Withdrawing from a class at this point may result in a F for the course.

Graduation Requirements

Credit requirements may be altered due to Board of Education action

Total Credits needed for Graduation: 26

Semester class = 1 credit

Term class = ½ credit

*Personal Finance is a required elective to graduate for the class of 2028 and beyond

NOTE: Students who take Algebra I at the high school level will receive elective credit only for these courses These courses do not count toward the math graduation requirement

Graduation Participation Seniors must have earned a minimum of 25 of the 26 required credits to participate in the graduation ceremony All credits must be completed at the time of the graduation practice In order to participate in the ceremony, it is mandatory to attend rehearsal and pay the participation fee. Commencement is a voluntary event in which students may choose to participate

General Information

All courses at the high school grant credit on a term/semester basis. Students are enrolled in 4 courses per term (2 credits). Seniors must be enrolled in at least 2 courses (1 credit) each term regardless of already meeting the 26 graduation credit requirement If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact the Wildcat Academy Coordinator

Grading Scale

A = 93-100 A- = 90-92 B+ = 87-89

B = 83-86 B- = 80-82 C+ = 77-79

C = 73-76 C- = 70-72 D+ = 67-69

D = 63-66 D- = 60-62

Cumulative Grade Point Average

Below 60 = No Credit

Students are graded on an A-B-C-D-F basis Each grade received in a given grading period is assigned a numerical value, dependent upon its credit value for that grading period The sum of these numerical values is divided by the number of credits attempted in that grading period to determine a GPA (Grade Point Average). A GPA is calculated for each student at the end of each grading period

Incompletes

● If a student doesn't complete the necessary work to earn a credit in the course, they should contact their teacher The teacher can grant a student an incomplete

● At the end of terms 1,2, & 3 students will have five (5) school days to complete any work for the incomplete. If at the end of the 5 school days, sufficient work has not been completed, a grade of "F" will be assigned At the end of term 4, incomplete work must be done by the last day of school Extensions need to be arranged through the teacher and the counselor.

Class Rank

● Class rank is computed at the end of each term.

● The same point process used to compute the honor roll is used to compute rank in class

● Class rank statistics are computed and printed on the report card each quarter.

● Wildcat Academy student’s class rank is separate from the other schools in Chisago Lakes School District

Academic Letter

● Students may earn a CL yearly at the end of Term 3 with a 3 5 GPA or higher

Senior Honor Students

● Seniors graduating with GPA of 3.50 to 3.749 graduate with honors, and seniors graduating with GPA of 3.75 and above graduate with highest honors.

● GPA will be computed after 3rd Term

College/Military Entrance Recommendations and Requirements

Community College

● Offer career programs leading to a job

● Open admission policy - students with a high school diploma can enroll

● Do not need to take ACT or SAT - need to take a placement exam once accepted

● Examples: Anoka Ramsey Community College, Century Community College

Technical College

● Earn a 2-year degree, diploma or certificate

● Offer programs that teach specific knowledge and skills leading directly to careers

● Open admission policy - some programs fill up fast

● Do not need to take ACT or SAT - need to take a placement exam once accepted

● Examples: Pine Technical and Community College, Anoka Technical College

4-Year

Colleges and Universities (public & private

● Offer programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s and advanced degrees

● Some 4-year colleges have a traditional admission policy (student needs to complete college preparatory curriculum and be in the upper half of the class) Some are more selective Stop in the career center or see your counselor for specific admission requirements

● Need to take a college entrance exam ACT or SAT

● Examples: St Cloud State University, University of Minnesota or University of St Thomas

College prep curriculum for new freshmen at most 4-year colleges

● 4 years of language arts

● 3 years of math (some colleges require 4 years of math for admission, check with your counselor)

● 3 years of science

● 3 years of social studies including geography

● 2 years of a single world language

● 1 year of the arts (visual arts, music, communication tech , and/or drama)

Requirements for Military Service

Students may choose from a variety of military service opportunities i.e., Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard or Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) A high school diploma or advanced degree is the basic academic requirement Recruits must also pass a physical examination and complete the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Contact specific branches of the military for more information.

Environmental Science is designed to introduce students to the main concepts of environmental science It will help students gain knowledge of the natural processes that occur in nature and understand their importance and relevance Students will also gain awareness of some of the environmental issues and challenges we face in the world today, such as land use and management, wildlife conservation, resource and waste management, and the different kinds of pollution Finally, students will learn about energy sources and production, sustainable development, and environmental policies.

Exploring Agriculture Science and Business is designed to focus on the role of agriculture and its impacts on society and the concepts of sustainable agriculture, agribusiness, and agricultural mechanics Students will learn about the plant lifecycle, characteristics of livestock, food sources, nutrition, and food safety principles. They will also research and write about major advancements and issues in agriculture, create nutritionally balanced meal plans, and apply the scientific investigation process to answer questions and solve problems They will also evaluate the effects of pollution on ecosystems and propose solutions In addition, the course covers agricultural mechanics and technology and their effects on society and the economy, as well as various types of agribusinesses and their functions. The course will also teach students about local and national job opportunities available in the agricultural science and agribusiness industry and the skills needed for success in these careers

Forestry and Wildlife Management begins by identifying employment and entrepreneurial opportunities in forestry, wildlife, and natural resource management Students learn about safety hazards and procedures in the industry They also learn about soil, mineral, plant, water, forest, and wildlife management, as well as the laws that govern these professions. In addition, students learn about the tools and practices used in forestry and wildlife management careers Finally, they learn about the carrying capacity of rangelands and the consequences of overgrazing

WA0414 INTRODUCTION TO MARINE BIOLOGY

Introduction to Marine Biology is designed to introduce students to oceanic features and processes, ocean habitats and ecosystems, life forms in the ocean, and types of interactions in the ocean. Students will learn about the formation and characteristic features of the oceans They will learn about the scientific method and explore careers available in marine biology The course then covers the characteristic features of different taxonomic groups, habitats, life forms, and ecosystems that exist in the oceans and different adaptations marine creatures possess to survive in the ocean Students will learn about succession and the flow of energy in marine ecosystems, as well as the resources that the oceans provide and the threats that the oceans face from human activities

WA0415 INTRODUCTION TO VETERINARY SCIENCE

Introduction to Veterinary Science is designed to introduce students at the high school level to the fundamentals of veterinary science The students will explore the history of veterinary science and the skills and requirements for a successful career in the veterinary industry They will also explore the anatomy and physiology of animals, learn how to evaluate animal health, and determine effective treatments for infectious and noninfectious diseases in animals. Additionally, they will learn about zoonotic diseases, and the impact of toxins and poisons on animal health

Natural Resources focuses on the sustainable management of natural resources such as air, water, minerals, energy sources, soil, and land The course begins with an introduction to types of natural resources, including biotic, abiotic, renewable, and nonrenewable resources, as well as their geographic distribution and uses It explores how human activities affect the availability of natural resources and examines the environmental and economic consequences of natural resource use and overuse In addition, the course covers soil, land, forest, and rangeland management Students will discover career options and the skills needed within the natural resources industry, as well as workplace safety regulations Finally, the course examines the laws and regulations that govern natural resource use and management

Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources is a course where students will learn about various career options in the agriculture, food, and natural resources industries They will learn about technology, safety, and regulatory issues in agricultural science They will also learn about topics related to agriculture, such as international agriculture and world trade, sustainability, environmental management, research, development, and future trends in the industry The course helps students understand how the rising demand for sustainable food sources can be met while also meeting the challenge of producing higher yields to feed a growing world This course is recommended to take first before other agriculture classes

Art and Music

Art Appreciation is a survey of the history of Western visual arts, with a primary focus on painting. Students begin with an introduction to the basic principles of painting and learn how to critique and compare works of art Students then explore prehistoric and early Greek and Roman art before they move on to the Middle Ages Emphasis is placed on the Renaissance and the principles and masters that emerged in Italy and northern Europe Students continue their art tour with the United States during the 20th century, a time of great innovation as abstract art took center stage. While Western art is the course's primary focus, students finish the course by studying artistic traditions from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas

This course explores the main concepts of art, expression, and creativity as it helps students answer questions such as what is art; what is creativity; and how and why people respond to art. Few recent technical innovations have changed an industry as fundamentally as digital photography has changed everything about the way we capture our lives in the way we take, edit, store, and share pictures. Professional Photography provides a practical, hands-on guide to help students understand the skills required to achieve success in photography careers This course will cover various topics, such as types of photography, using digital cameras, photographic lighting and composition, manipulating images, printing photos, darkroom development, evaluating photographs, and print production. By the end of the courses, students will learn how to create a photography portfolio.

Computer Programming I familiarizes students with the basics of computer programming Students will learn about data representation, program execution, programming languages, and program structures. They will also create web pages in HTML and a JavaScript program Then students will learn about the phases of the software development life cycle (SDLC) and methods of software development, including learning about security threats, disaster recovery, and data privacy issues. In addition, the course covers the skills, ethics, and training required for careers in computer programming.

Computer Science Essentials offers a focused curriculum designed around foundational computer science concepts, including computer systems, programming, networks, and data management The course also introduces students to foundational computer science skills such as coding, troubleshooting, and being a responsible digital citizen Course topics include the history and impact of computers; careers in computer science; computing laws and ethics; bias and equity issues in computing; algorithms and coding; data storage, organization, and analysis; hardware and software; robotics; networks and the internet; cybersecurity and online safety; website design; and the use of abstraction in computing. Students discover new concepts through guided instruction and confirm their understanding in an interactive, feedback-rich environment. This is the second course for a computer science pathway.

Security Fundamentals is designed to enable students at the high school level to develop the critical skills and knowledge necessary for careers in cybersecurity. Students will learn about the basic concepts of cybersecurity, basic computer components, file management, types of networks, Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network protocols, and IP addresses

This course then covers security threats, prevention methods, and legal and ethical issues in cybersecurity. After gaining an understanding of security agencies, security topologies, quality control systems, and physical security devices, students will explore securing network devices, data security, data backup and recovery, and risk management

English 9 is designed based on a clear thematic connection and lessons that build upon each other Texts in this course are diverse, authentic, complex, and rich in length. Students encounter texts multiple times over the course of a unit digging deeper in theme and focus standards Each lesson follows a clear instructional model mirroring that of the traditional tier-one lesson cycle: warm-up, direct teaching with modeling, guided practice, independent practice, and closure. English 11A explores the relation between American history and literature from the colonial period through the realism and naturalism eras. English 11B explores the relation between American history and literature from the modernist period through the contemporary era and presents learners with relevant cultural and political history Readings are scaffolded with pre-reading information, interactions, and activities to actively engage learners in the content The lessons focus on developing grammar, vocabulary, speech, and writing skills.

Business English is designed to strengthen students’ ability to read and write in the workplace Writing for business purposes is a main focus of the course Students will learn how to communicate effectively through email and instant messaging, as well as format specific types of business messages and workplace documents. The role of digital media, visuals, and graphics in workplace communication will be explored The importance of professionalism, ethics, and other positive skills are also emphasized in the course Additionally, guidance is provided to help students through the process of searching, applying, and interviewing for a job.

Creative Writing is a course that is designed to get students to pursue creative writing as a vocation or as a hobby To that purpose, it exposes them to different genres and techniques of creative writing and the key elements (such as plot and characterization in fiction) in each genre. Great creative writing doesn't come merely by reading about the craft one also needs ideas; a process for planning, drafting and revising; and the opportunity to experiment with different forms and genres The lessons in this course familiarize students with the basic structure and elements of different types or genres of writing

In keeping with the model established in English 11, these courses emphasize the study of literature in the context of specific historical periods, beginning with the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods in Britain Each lesson includes tutorials and embedded lesson activities that provide for a more engaging and effective learning experience English 12B covers the romantic, Victorian, and modern eras.
