StJPII Summer Reading & Math - Elementary (NEW Students)

May 2021 Dear StJPII Parents, Each summer students are required to continue to read and practice their math skills, so that knowledge is not lost over the summer. Research has proven that 15-20 minutes of reading each day increases the amount of vocabulary a child learns, which in turn increases comprehension, all resulting in higher academic performance. By reading and reviewing math skills over the summer, students are able to begin the school year better prepared for new content.

Summer reading consists of two required books. Students will participate in a variety of classroom activities to demonstrate their learning of the selections when they return to school in August.

Summer IXL will focus on specific Math and ELA objectives provided for students in each grade level using IXL software. In August, teachers will review and grade the twenty concepts practiced. The goal is to allow for practice and reinforcement for a successful start of the school year.

Summer reading is an important part of the educational growth of boys and girls. This reading should include required, pleasure reading, and some materials that challenge students as well. These reading assignments are to promote and maintain reading skills. Research tells us that students can lose as much as thirty percent over the summer without the rigors of classroom learning. Please look for additional links on our website for Reading and Math activities. Required reading books can be read at any time during the summer. A brief revisit to these books would be in order just before school starts since teachers use these required books as the lesson material for the first few weeks of school. It is highly recommended that students have their own copy of the required books for this purpose.

Encourage your students and take the time to rediscover as a family, favorite childhood books. With virus-related closures, check with your local public libraries for hours and availability. Elementary Summer IXL ELA and Math

Dear Saints and Families, Each Summer we require our students to practice their skills in order to retain ELA and Math competencies and prepare for the coming school year.

The link below will take you to a list of specific IXL lessons called the ELA and Math IXL Summer Boost. Each Summer Boost is broken down daily into 20 specific concepts to help keep students organized, on level, and well paced. Your teacher will be able to digitally review work when we return in August. The ideal “IXL SmartScore” for a concept is 100, but an acceptable “IXL SmartScore” is 80.

Since IXL will produce a report of your completed work for your teacher, there is no need to complete a “Summer IXL Log” as had been required in the past. Each Summer Boost will count for a Quarter 1 grade.

Important Instructions for your child regarding logging in and accessing assigned list of IXL lessons: 1) Log into IXL - www.ixl.com/signin/johnpaul (login information will be sent by mail no later than the first week of June) 2) Open the IXL Summer Requirements document - bit.ly/elemixljp2 3) Once you open the IXL Summer Requirements document, click on the appropriate ELA or Math link for the grade that you will be in for this coming school year (2021/2022).

4) Follow the schedule for Days 1-20. Try to achieve a SmartScore of 100, but a SmartScore of 80 is allowed 5) Repeat for both Math and Language Arts
