St. John Paul II Catholic School (StJPII)’s theme for the 2020-2021 school year was “Growing in Faith and Virtue.” We were determined to be together again, because we needed to share in the joy and love of our Catholic faith with our saint community. Throughout the summer, we worked hard to get our campus ready and school started on time, albeit with many Covid-19 precautions in place. By the second semester the entire student body was back on campus! We truly embraced our motto “Be not afraid...” and trusted that the year would turn out great, which it did! The Lord is with us all the time, and so we were intentional about recognizing how blessed our StJPII community truly is. Throughout the year we implemented a new program which encouraged us to embrace our Catholic virtues and live like Saints. In May, we awarded the first “Tom Bevans Award of Catholic Virtues” to a precious kindergarten saint, thus reminding all of us that everyone can make a big difference when we focus on living as Jesus did!
As we close this 30th year, we look to the virtue of “faith,” challenging us to follow the Lord with all our hearts, hopeful that he is in control and guiding us on our journey. I ask that you all continue to pray for our special school and our mission that we strive to fulfill each day.
In Him we Trust,
St. John Paul II Catholic School has been truly blessed by the generosity of so many members of our community who believe in our vision of providing an outstanding, yet affordable, Catholic education. The 2020-2021 StJPII Advanced Band submitted two of their contest recordings last spring in the Association of Texas Small School Bands annual Outstanding Performance Series. Recordings are adjudicated by class in each of the 22 regions across Texas and the top two are advanced to one of five Areas in Texas (each Area comprises 4-5 regions). From there, the top two are advanced to State Adjudications where the top two recordings are named the Outstanding Performance in each class (Class 1C Middle Schools- like StJPII, Class 2C/3C Middle Schools, Class 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A High Schools).
Both of StJPII’s recordings advanced from Region to Area and from Area to State. While they were not selected as the very top two recordings in their class state-wide, they were in the top 15 in Class 1C Middle Schools in Texas!
In June, StJPII hosted the Symposium for Excellence in Catholic Education which included several principals from other high performing schools throughout Texas. They shared best practices about hot topics such as meeting the needs of diverse learners, STREAM, Endowment, Admissions, etc. The mission of the St. John Paul II Symposium for Catholic Education is to actively protect, strengthen, and expand excellence in Catholic Education in the United States through the sharing of proven and unique practices and Catholic equational concepts from the best Catholic elementary schools in our country.
At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, StJPII awarded the first ever Tom Bevans Award of Catholic Virtues to kindergartener James Olson. This award is made possible by the Scanlan Foundation, in honor of Mr. Bevans, who was not only the Past President of the Scanlan Foundation, but also an influential leader in the early years of our school. James was nominated by his teachers to receive this award for exemplifying the Catholic virtues, just like Mr. Bevans modeled for many generations. The Lord blessed Mr. Bevans (1934-2019) with a lifetime of wonderful experiences. As the son of a naval officer, he resided in many cities, graduating from St. Louis College Prep in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr. Bevans then entered the Trappist Monastery, Abbey of the Holy Trinity, in Huntsville, Utah. Later he studied at Loyola University of New Orleans, where he secured business and law degrees. Mr. Bevans joined the FBI as a special agent, where he spent almost 27 years, serving in Denver, Los Angeles, the field office of Pasadena, California, and Houston. After retiring, he practiced law for many years, providing significant pro bono immigration work for beloved friends of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and from Vietnam. Mr. Bevans and his wife Kathleen were active members of St. John Vianney Parish and above all else, cherished their family, which coincidentally includes daughter Allyson Sutton, a beloved StJPII pre-kindergarten teacher. Mr. Bevans was actively involved in the Serra Club of Houston and served as its president. He was also a working member of the Retired FBI Agents Association of Houston. Mr. Bevans was awarded President Emeritus status of the Scanlan Foundation on March 4, 2019. We are so proud that all of our students strive to carry on the faithful legacy that Mr. Bevans so beautifully demonstrated throughout his lifetime.
St. John Paul II (StJPII) Catholic was recognized by the Cardinal Newman Society as a Catholic Education Honor Roll School for 2020-2025. This honor is only bestowed on those schools distinguishing themselves in the areas of Catholic identity and academic excellence.
StJPII is the only school in Houston, TX to be honored with this award. This distinction also fully complements the school’s National Blue Ribbon Award, proving that StJPII excels in both academics and spiritual formation.
The Catholic Education Honor Roll (CEHR) helps schools strengthen their Catholic identity by evaluating internal policies and practices and recognizing schools committed to the Principles of Catholic Identity in Education.
The Honor Roll criteria conform (since 2017) to the Principles of Catholic Identity in Education, which The Cardinal Newman Society has derived from Church teaching and guidance on elementary and secondary education. They are: Inspired by Divine Mission; Models Christian Communion; Encounters Christ in Prayer, Scripture, and Sacrament; Integrally Forms the Human Person; and Imparts a Christian Understanding of the World

On March 23 – 29, 2021 we hosted our Bidding with Bernie Online Auction. We raised over $33,000 and introduced a StJPII Catholic School custom rosary for our families. Thoughtfully designed, we chose the St. Pope John Paul II papal crucifix and navy beads to represent our patron and school colors. The centerpiece features our patron saint as well as our Blessed Mother holding the baby Jesus. The Our Father medals represent our four Houses and virtues, and our school monogram and motto are highlighted as well. We’re so excited to be able to offer such a treasured keepsake made exclusively for our families.
Having a strong endowment for the school ensures that we continue to fulfill our Christ-centered mission for future generations of aspiring saints. We are valiantly committed to securing the success of the students entrusted to our care, which dictates that we secure the success of our school in perpetuity. The Endowment has designated funds for academic achievement, arts, athletics, and tuition assistance as well as a General Fund for any unforeseen needs that may arise. The Endowment Fund accepts gifts from individuals, corporations, or foundations, and invests these funds for the long-term goals of the school. There are many ways to give, including gifts of securities and planned gifts. For more information, contact the Development Office at 281-496-1500.
