2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

“Christ’s love is the key”

From the Principal

Principal Rebecca Bogard

Dear Parents, Alumni,

and Friends of

The 2017-2018 school year is full of tremendous celebrates 30 magnificent years of serving students Education. Our community has embraced a study Catholic faith, beginning with “hope.” This virtue as we weathered one of the most destructive experienced. Our Saint families demonstrated together to support those impacted by Hurricane

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of St. John Paul II Catholic School, St. John Paul II’s 2019-2020 school year was certainly one that will go down in the history books! We started the year with the theme, “Christ’s Love is the Key”. God is Love and without His love we are nothing; for truly love is the reason we were created! This year in particular we focused on loving like Christ in all of our interactions, thus ensuring that we became extensions of His love in our actions.

These actions of love and generosity are what of saints. We are fortunate to have so many friends and family St. John Paul II with donations of all kinds in order to fulfill our mission. Last school year, Annual Fund Drive to date thanks to your donations totaling over $500,000. In this everyone to take part in order to meet our goal.

We remain committed to ongoing excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts listen to God’s will. The school has launched a new strategic plan which paves the to grow in excellence and to meet the various needs of each and every one of our of tradition and innovation. StJPII continues to be a leader in Catholic education Archdiocese as well as the first to receive recognition as a National Blue Ribbon school in all areas and earn an average of 20 academic scholarships to the local Catholic Just this last year, two of our young men were recognized as Ignatian Scholars at Stake testament to the formation our students receive at StJPII that prepares them for the and beyond.

We opened our hearts wide and our community’s strength was evident in so many ways - from our new round cafeteria tables, new House shirts, the Mardi Gras gala, and our first $1MM endowment gift. Little did we know that our world would be turned upside down when everything shut down due to Covid-19. School couldn’t reopen after Spring Break, so we were challenged to reimagine being a community while we embarked upon distance learning. StJPII even hosted a virtual Stations of the Cross and virtual Fun in the Sun! While it was difficult to be separated from each other physically, our love for Christ, and trusting in his love for us, brought us together in ways we never thought possible.

As we close this 30th year, we look to the virtue of “faith,” challenging us to follow the Lord with all our hearts, hopeful that he is in control and guiding us on our journey. I ask that you all continue to pray for our special school and our mission that we strive to fulfill each day.

Note From the Development Office:

ACADEMIC AWARDS

Outstanding Contributor Award

Mr. Kenneth Griffin, our Band Director, received the Outstanding Contributor Award from the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, an international bandmaster fraternity. Mr. Griffin was inducted into the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame August 2018 and was recognized at the annual meeting of the chapter in San Antonio during the Texas Bandmasters Association convention as the 2019 Outstanding Contributor. This award is usually given to music companies and organizations that contribute to the profession, but occasionally it is given to individuals who have contributed to the advancement of instrumental music in Texas.

house system

Last Fall, St. John Paul II Catholic School introduced a House system for the student body. The Houses at StJPII are based on our long-standing tradition of Saints Families. StJPII’s House system promotes unity, school spirit, leadership, and most importantly, spirituality. Students have been learning to live the virtues of their assigned House while they model the character of our community of saints. The four Houses of StJPII are named for the Holy Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Each of these Houses is made of up approximately 15 Saints Families, which are smaller groups representing students from each grade. Every Tuesday, students wear their “House” shirts, which are all designated with a unique color, so they can identify themselves with other members of their House and Saints Family.

Saint Family Crest Symbolism

I. House of Matthew: COMPASSION represented by angel wings (purple shirts)

II. House of Mark: COURAGE represented by a knight (red shirts)

III. House of Luke: SERVICE represented by heart and hands (green shirts)

IV. House of John: FAITH represented by the Bible (blue shirts)

2019-2020 Annual Fund benefactors

The mission of St. John Paul II Catholic School is to prepare all students spiritually and academically to succeed in life and to do God’s will. Our Annual Fund supports every aspect of our mission and it is put to use in our current academic year. StJPII benefactors’ support of the Annual Fund allows us to further our Catholic educational mission, offer outstanding academic programs, retain excellent faculty, maintain facilities, fuel innovation, and provide tuition assistance. These are all very visible and tangible ways your support elevates our students’ experience at StJPII. Making a philanthropic gift to the Annual Fund is an act of faith that lessens the burden of tuition and encourages our students to grow closer to Jesus. $417,343 was contributed to the 2019-2020 Annual Fund Drive.
