A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends:
As I reflect on my time as a student at HPU, I cannot help but be thankful for all of the people God used to shape me into the person I am today. I can still remember sitting in classes under Dr. Donnie Auvenshine and Dr. Gary Gramling. While these men taught great lessons and sound theology, they also lived their lives in a godly manner that spoke volumes. I learned from both what they taught and how they lived.
This publication is centered around the theme “Then and Now.” We asked several alumni to reflect on how their experiences as students led them to support projects at HPU today. The impact of each of their gifts can be seen through the responses of current HPU students. I know you will be encouraged to see that God continues to work in and through the lives of students on this campus to prepare them for the future leaders they will become. God has been moving on this campus for 136 years and He is still at work.

WOODY ’80 AND MIKI (MIETH) ’80 MARTIN FUND
Alumni Woody ’80 and Miki (Mieth) ’80 Martin have always viewed their involvement at HPU as a kind of mission work. As students, each of them found meaningful connections on campus through mentors, accountability partners and lifelong friendships. So, whether during their time as staff at HPU or through their support now as alumni, the couple views campus as a place that holds special meaning.
“I think it’s important that people be on campus, because that place has an effect on people,” shared Woody. “I just think the Lord speaks to you at that place because that school honors him, and so there is a profound effect on people.”
It was this draw to campus that caused the idea of a new beach volleyball program to strike a chord for the Martins. It ultimately led them to fund the construction of three new sand volleyball courts, which were completed in the spring of 2025.
“There was hardly any way we could say no,” said Woody. “There isn’t another intercollegiate sport that

competes on our campus, except this one. And so, that’s kind of huge.”
Miki’s own experience as a volleyball player at HPU also played a key role in the couple’s decision to fund the new courts.
“Because I played volleyball while I was at HPU, the idea of sand volleyball really was exciting to me,” she explained. “Not only do the new courts allow the team a campus location but they provide a place for fun and fellowship for all our students, which is so important to campus life.”
It has been gratifying for the Martins to watch as the courts were completed and then filled with students almost nightly. Brooke O’Neal, kinesiology major from Red Oak, shared about how much the courts mean to students.
“They give students opportunities to connect,” she explained. “They also introduce students to new interests and passions they may not know they had until they were given the chance to play this sport.”

Woody and Miki hope that the courts will continue to bring students to campus where they can grow in their faith.
“We always say that we feel like we’re involved in missions when we give to Howard Payne,” Woody explained, “because if a kid shows up to school knowing Jesus, they’re going to be mentored and discipled, and if somebody shows up without Christ, they’re going to be introduced … we just want to see the mission fulfilled.”
The intention behind the project is felt by Rylee McAlexander, kinesiology major from Montgomery.
“It just shows how much of an impact HPU has had on students even after they graduate,” she shared. “Alumni love our campus so much that they want to make it better for future students.”

GIVES TO START CENTER FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
For Dr. Diann (Smith) Rozell Huber ’71, reflecting on her time at HPU led her be involved as an alumna. She wants to see young people today have access to settings such as Howard Payne where they can grow, mature and better know the Lord.
“My experience was really impactful to me, and now, later in life, I want to give so others can experience that,” she said.
Dr. Huber gave a gift that enabled HPU to establish the Center for Student Success (CSS). The facility is housed on the second floor of Walker Memorial Library and provides vital resources for students such as tutoring, academic coaching and learning accommodations.
“I want every student who makes the commitment to Howard Payne to be successful, and every student
learns differently,” Dr. Huber explained. “School is hard. Freshman year is really hard, and people come from so many different backgrounds. If there was a place they could go and feel comfortable … and along the way, get that paper written correctly, get that résumé developed, get a little help with that algebra problem, it’s a win-win.”
Dr. Huber’s idea for the CSS came from her grandson Bo’s experience looking for a college to attend. He toured a school with a student success center that could help with learning accommodations for dysgraphia. Dr. Huber wanted her grandson to succeed and thought that other HPU students could also benefit from such a resource, so she brought her idea to Dr. Cory Hines ’97, HPU president.
Bo elected to come to Howard Payne but weeks into his freshman year was diagnosed with cancer.
Dr. Huber promised when he was cancer-free, she would take Bo anywhere he wanted to go. So after he rang the bell, symbolizing he was cancer-free, he and his grandmother took a trip to see the Northern Lights.

what I started – I’m going back to Howard Payne,’” Dr. Huber shared. “So, he’ll be back on campus in the fall using the Center for Student Success. I couldn’t be more pleased.”
The CSS has already proved to be incredibly valuable to students on campus. Nicole (de la Houssaye) Griffin ’25 shared how beneficial the resource has been.
“This has by far been one of my favorite renovations that HPU has seen because it’s prioritizing something that I’ve witnessed a need for firsthand,” she said. “I have several friends who are tutors currently, and seeing
the difference not only in the facilities that have been provided but also the increased number of tutors that are available has been amazing.”
Recent graduate Luis Oscar de Santiago ’23 and MBA ’25 thanked Dr. Huber for all the center has meant to him and his classmates.
“Thank you, Dr. Huber, for your vision and dedication in creating the Center for Student Success,” he said. “Because of your leadership, we’ve had the support, guidance and resources needed to reach our goals –thank you for believing in our potential.”

PROVIDE GIFT FOR TENNIS PROGRAM
As alumni Ronnie ’83 and Teri (Davis) ’83 Andrews reflected on their days as HPU students, they both saw the campus as the place where their faith took root, enduring friendships were built and their life together was set in motion.
“Sound academics, a structured, egalitarian culture, and honorable, trustworthy mentors were all available at HPU under a broad umbrella of spiritual covering,” Teri said.
The Andrews recently gave a generous gift to support the tennis program, which will strengthen the future of tennis at the university.
“The choice of where to give is often guided by those places that have most profoundly impacted one’s spiritual and personal formation,” Ronnie said. “Our gift is both a reflection of profound gratitude and a commitment to nurturing future generations of students who will be similarly transformed.”
Teri has a passion for tennis, both as a player and spectator.
“It is with great joy that Ronnie and I join forces with the esteemed host of past and present Yellow Jacket tennis players, coaches and donors to continue building the legacy of HPU tennis,” she said.
The Andrews also see the value in competitive athletics as an avenue to teach, inspire and unite players both on and off the field.
“It is a powerful force on any campus to rally past, present and future students around a common banner, resulting in lifelong friendships and camaraderie,” Teri said.
Noah Baiani, mathematics major from Wylie, shared about how formative his experience has been as a tennis player at HPU.
“At HPU, I’ve found my tribe – friends and relations that will last a lifetime,” he said. “This is a place that I feel like I truly belong and can call home. I have mentors and coaches that continue to teach and guide me through my college journey. I am lucky to be a Yellow Jacket.”
As the tennis program continues to grow through strong leadership and continued facility improvements, the Andrews hope it will serve as a catalyst for the continued growth of the entire athletics department.
“Added to HPU’s existing academic and social programming, this will position the school well for growth and prosperity far into the next century –all for the ultimate glory and honor of God’s great name,” Teri said.
Victoria Ramos, biomedical sciences major from Brownwood and member of the tennis team, commented on what alumni giving means for students to come.
“It creates such a bright future for Howard Payne to know that people who once walked the same paths I’m walking now believe in giving back to help future generations of students thrive,” she said. “Alumni support makes a huge difference for Howard Payne as a whole, not just in funding athletic programs but in creating spaces where students can learn, connect with others and create a loving community.”

Kyle “Austin” Griffin ’25 received the Edward Garrett Ministerial Scholarship during his senior year at HPU. The scholarship helped enable Austin to complete his undergraduate degree while serving as a pastor in a local church.
The Robnett Legacy Society, named in memory of HPU founder Dr. John D. Robnett, was established to recognize former students and friends of HPU who desire to invest in the future of quality Christian education by remembering HPU in their wills and financial plans. Generous planned gifts from past alumni and friends have addressed campus needs, enlarged the endowment and supported student scholarships.
