Decisions for 2024 - the first step. Update from President David Newman The next Executive Committee meeting is on the 27th of the month and your committee will be asked to approve the transfer of a second draft of just under $50K from the 32-day call account to an on call account. This is to ensure and back up the timely payments of staff and creditors over the holiday period and into the new year in accordance with the budget. Our $1.8M reserve remains intact through interest due to be earned, but profits this year on deposits are unlikely. I have underway a major review of club expenditure and its social and economic return. Our direction and development in 2024 will likely involve an Extra Ordinary General Meeting to make sure members are aboard and exercising their rights to steer the committee in the best way forward. With the other members of the Finance Committee, slowly failing and even our share of repairing the access road could cost more than $30K. It’s a long list. We are poorly located for passing traffic and while open and staffed for six days a week there are few patrons for most of the day. Our membership is growing but many of our stalwarts are not in the bloom of youth and their days as volunteers, upon whom all RSAs depend, are well gone. Sadly today, membership is more about want and not participation. At least membership is growing from the lows through Covid times. Membership breakdown at the end of 30 October 2023 was 71.5% Associate and only 28.5% Full Members of some sort, from service connections.

I am developing a state of the nation report on the full range of options and their consequences for the So we have a dwindling ex-service membership. club. In the past I have spoken about possibly selling and moving and even amalgamation with another club. The lack of cash flow with both them and us is a constant issue.

All of this is why I have called for a major review of the effectiveness of our current expenditure and its social and financial return. It will provide options for going forward that reflect the needs and wishes of our membership, preserve our reserves and maintain our welfare services.

It’s like the old joke about “you must be rich you have a house worth $2M” and the response, of course, is that I can’t eat the house and have no I hope to be able to share that full review with you money to buy food.A number of us on the committee in the President’s letter on 4 December once it are of the opinion that we are never going to make a has been approved for release by the upcoming profit if we stay where we are. committee meeting on 27 November. Indoor Bowling Club The indoor bowling group meet up every Tuesday (except the first Tuesday of the month) and on Thursdays, playing three games a day. It is very much a social club and they do not take part in competitive tournaments. A number of players stay behind afterwards for a few drinks at the bar.

They have two social events a year; one mid-year and one at Christmas. There is no annual fee but there is a $4 daily cover charge which allows them to fund their game, contribute to door prizes, to purchase any replacement equipment and to subsidise the midwinter and Christmas events while making a twiceyearly donation to the HBCRSA.

A light afternoon tea is served between the second and third games. Indoor bowls is a game for anyone any age and new members are always welcome, both first time bowlers and those who feel like they might wish to pursue past interests as a member of a social bowling club. If you are interested and would like further information, please feel free to give Bob Hill the Club Captain a call on 027 3399 683.
