The build-up begins to the most important AGM for years

Update from President David Newman

There were a number of things of real interest to our members on the agenda of our Executive Committee meeting on 24 June.

The easy one was the date for the 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) - 15 September 2024 at 10am at HBCRSA clubrooms. More details and reports in Outwards magazine to come soon.

The Future Sub-Committee also presented its report to the committee looking at options for our future.

The sole reason for the Future Sub Committee being formed in the first place was because our future as an RSA club is at grave risk.

Unless we start to make a profit, or at least contain our losses to interest earned on our investment, the writing is on the wall for us to become another in the long list of failed RSAs who waited until it was too late to take action.

The end for us will come in 5-8 years if we continue with the current losses which have been around and largely ignored for well over a decade.

We have already sold half of the family silver and if we sit on our hands and do nothing all we will have left is land and building and no cash in the bank for operations.

As I have said many times, our premises are not used enough and does not generate enough profit for us to survive with our current operations model and, possibly, in our current location.

Please members and others, visit your clubrooms, participate in what we have and consider standing for committee at the AGM.

Included in the Future Report is the range of options the committee sees as viable for the future. They include an examination of what’s needed if we stay where we are, amalgamations, sale, downsizing and/or renting out sections of the club to private enterprise.

The report will be released to all members in July, plenty of time to study and ensure a lively AGM in September.

With the AGM only a few months after the release of the report, it made a lot of sense to combine a vote on the future of our club with the election of your new committee at the AGM rather than try to squeeze in another EGM before then.

The AGM will give your new committee the direction it needs to head in and get ready for an EGM to sign off a plan and start creating a sustainable future for our club.

Once we have a targeted response from members at the AGM we will begin to create detailed feasibility studies, mindful of our constrained budget. We will analyse the committee’s recommendations and drill down on the financial implications for the long term. We will call on expertise from members and other specialists for these answers.

The Future Report has taken a lot of time and effort from your two vice presidents, Kay and Bevan and committee member David Dryden. A couple of members sat in and offered their views and a special thanks to them also and all others who took the time to make a formal response to a call for ideas.

Our poor old Right of Way. Hopefully Melia Developments will be undertaking

maintenance this month on the large, depressed metal areas in the hotmix surface. All this work is to maintain and hold together the surface for users until site and building works come to an end at some time in the future.

At that stage the road will need to be totally re-constructed. There is a cost sharing maintenance agreement in place, and registered on both of our certificates of titles. This was a negotiated condition by HBCRSA when Melia purchased the land and were granted an access right on our ROW. It is very much in our favour, costshare wise. Please bear with us on this

ongoing repair issue.

I will not be standing for a third term as President in September at the AGM. I would like to, but life is forever gently changing and I need to be more available at home.

Thank you to members and volunteers throughout the club.

With your continuing help we will keep the trust granted to us by those who have fought for the defence of our democracy, a free vote and the right to choose who we want to manage our future.

Golf Club

It was a beautiful winter’s day on Sunday, 16 June when the HBCRSA monthly tournament was held at Takapuna Golf Course. No wind, no rain, just a calm, warm winter’s day. Due to no carts allowed and late injuries/sickness/ withdrawals, we only had a field of 13 players. The course was in good condition considering the heavy rain on Friday and although it was busy, we played at a usual pace for our RSA field.

The golf was not sterling - with the average Stableford score a mere 25.1 - a record low. Tex won the Stableford raffle with his guess of 321. Many people were contenders for NAGA, but it was taken out by Paul Thompson, who had been ill but made the effort to come.

Debbie was the only lady in the field so joined the men for the longest drive and closest to the pin. Nobody won nearest the pin in two, nearest in one was taken out by Ian Price, and the longest drive was won by Keith AdamsBlackie’s son in law and guest.

Best Stableford score was 31 points, won by Alan Harris.

Our lowest net winner was Craig Edwards with a net score of 75. Lionel Lester won the raffle AGAIN and took home the vodka this time. When his name was drawn a SECOND time he gracefully asked for a redraw so that Jug could win a bottle of wine. Jug then got drawn himself AGAIN and also gracefully requested a redraw so that Blackie could win a bottle of wine. Congratulations to our winners.

Women’s Section

Our members enjoyed the talk by Inspector Mark Fergus at our last meeting and we were joined by a small group of husbands/partners.

Our next meeting is on 2 July and we will be entertained by the great-grandchildren of one of our members who will give a demonstration of dancing, and also by Mr Wayne Woods whose music is always enjoyable.

Our next game is at Warkworth on 21 July. The following Sunday we will have our AGM. Data shows that we have more members come to the AGM if it is not immediately following a golf tournament, so our AGM is on Sunday 28 July. The venue is still being decided on and it will be either on or close to Whangaparaoa. Details will follow.

The RSA National championships are being held in Napier this year, from 2nd-6th Nov.

Visit the Hibiscus Coast RSA web page for all the latest news from the club.

We would also like to remind members that we need donations for our trading table which is held every month.

We would welcome household items that are in good clean condition and are no longer required.

Fishing Club

Only one trip on King’s Birthday Monday 3 June.

The trip started in reasonable weather, and we motored for over an hour in a straight line towards the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula. There was some bird life, and the fishing was a little slow to begin with as low tide was around 10am. Once the tide turned there was a noticeable increase in activity and we were able to weigh anchor early and share six -seven Snapper each, so a good ending to the season

Wednesday night 8 Ball starts at 7pm, names are to be on the board by 6:45pm.

This was attended by many our members and some partners.

On Sunday, 23 June a small team from the Pool Club travelled to Warkworth RSA to play in the Colin Whalen Trophy pairs competition. The competition was highly competitive with some high ranked players taking part, unfortunately our team did not get placed. The 8 Ball Club also has an end of month big prize night, where the pot, less the admin costs,
