by Parker Geiss Staff Reporter It’s that time of year again. Spring is just beginning, Prom has just ended, and everyone is making plans for the summer. With AP tests, college preparations, and finals for all grade levels looming around the corner, spring is easily one of the most stressful times of the year. To top it all off, juniors also have to worry about the ACT. For these students, it’s key to get a high ACT score in order to get into college and also to earn scholarships all across the country. Understandably, the test is a high priority for many. Luckily, Millard South has secured a 3-year grant to once again provide John Baylor Prep (JBP) to the junior class in order to help them prepare for the ACT. This is the second year that Millard South has utilized the services of JBP to come and teach the students helpful strategies for the ACT. “Skip the reading on the science section,” junior Jacob Ladage said. “That helped me out a lot. Also, 30 seconds left…. It’s bubble time. I remember that much,” he said.

These are just some of the tricks and strategies that Baylor teaches. With only a few more sessions before the juniors take the ACT, students like Ladage are working diligently on preparing themselves for this test. Zach Randolph, another junior, said he feels that these classes will definitely help with the ACT, but wishes for more focus on preparing for college over the ACT itself. Instead of several the longer live sessions like last year, administration and JBP planned three 90-minute live sessions, and six shorter video sessions with the goal of helping students improve their focus. “Last year’s live sessions were 3 hours long, which is a lengthy stretch for anyone,” Baylor said. “Millard South scholars will have to hold each other more accountable during video sessions, because there won’t be a teacher there to push them.” The drawback is that the videos are during classes.

Junior Taylor Barham said she feels that JBP is targeted for people with lower ACT scores. “Being in AP classes and with the exams coming soon, I do feel my class time is more valuable,” she said. Depending on a student’s schedule, it was possible to have three class periods in a row of JBP. This was the case for junior Austin Novak. “There was one day I had to watch three John Baylor videos in a row. It was math, science and reading. It was tiring but hopefully it will be worth it in the end. I went gym class first period and then that was it. John Baylor the rest of the day.” The date for this year’s ACT is April 19. Last year, MS earned a 21.4 average score. With this year’s sessions, there are high hopes to get even better scores than last year, and the student engagement seems to be reflecting that goal. That number may increase with the two extra years of JBP the school gets with the new grant.
