Spoonful Spring 2026

Page 1

Hello Spoonful Readers!

Spring is upon us — a perfect time to reflect on planting seeds and considering how we influence the growth of our community and ourselves. As a co-op, we planted our seed in a small garage in 1974. Since then, we have been proud to be part of the Frederick community as a community-owned cooperative.

Our commitment to local has grown tremendously over the past several years. Today, we buy from more than 40 local farms, work with over 145 local vendors, and carry more than 700 individual local products. We deeply value our relationships with small, local companies that craft their products with pride in small batches. These partners believe, as we do, in strengthening the connection between farms and the community that depends on them.

Our Meat Department offers one of the largest selections of local meats in the area, along with grass-fed options and sustainably sourced seafood. Our Produce Department consistently carries a wide variety of local fruits and vegetables. We feature a great selection of local cheeses, and our Wellness Department proudly supports several local producers. In our Café, we use local ingredients whenever possible and prepare most of our menu fresh from scratch daily. Our Grocery Department also offers a strong assortment of local products.

We all benefit from these partnerships. We provide local producers with a venue to sell their products and help keep 41 cents of every dollar spent on local products within our community.

We love all of our local partners, and I would like to name just a few: Fox Haven Farms, House in the Woods,

Lancaster Farm Fresh, Catoctin Mountain Orchards, Applegate Farms, Stoney Point Meats, Koch's Turkey Farm, Roseda Black Angus Farm, Hays Apiary, The Kombucha Lady, My Dad’s Chips, K9 Granola Factory, Earth Animal, Goose Ridge Soaps, Arrowlands Natural Goods, FireFly Farms, Jehovah Jireh, Organic Valley, Dohah’s Kitchen, Twin Bears Bakery, Michele’s Granola, Zoe’s Chocolate — and many more.

Supporting local reduces our carbon footprint, improves supply chain reliability, and strengthens our community connections. Local products are fresher and tastier because they are harvested at peak freshness and do not spend weeks in transit. Supporting local also helps preserve biodiversity while ensuring fresh, high-quality products.

At The Common Market, we cannot thank our local vendors enough for trusting us with their products and allowing us to connect them with our community. In today’s economy, “Local is the new normal.” One powerful example of this partnership occurred during COVID. While major meat packers faced supply challenges and many large grocery chains experienced empty shelves, our shelves remained full — thanks to our strong network of local meat producers.

During this planting season, we will have everything you need, from seeds and planting supplies to peat moss. We are also partnering with local vendors to host classes and events throughout the year. Be sure to join us for our Loco for Local event at Route 85 on May 16th. Stop by one of our co-ops to learn more about the benefits of becoming an owner.

We are Frederick — and we are proud of that.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

As the days grow longer and swaths of green return to our fields and gardens, spring brings fresh energy and abundant possibilities. Your Board of Directors is delighted to welcome this vibrant season and invite you to step in, participate, and celebrate the meaningful ways we can grow alongside one another.

We encourage you to take a class and learn something new! Whether it’s sharpening your kitchen skills, exploring nutrition, or diving into sustainable living practices. Be sure to stop by for a cooking demo to sample fresh, seasonal recipes, participate in our textile recycling event, or move your body and unwind in our weekly yoga classes. Each of these experiences nurtures a sense of togetherness that makes our store more than just a place to shop—it’s truly a place to belong.

Spring is also a beautiful time to support the local farmers, makers, and small businesses in our community. Bring home fresh flowers for your table, prepare a thoughtful meal, and celebrate the ones you love with food and gifts that reflect your values. Every purchase is a vote for a thriving local economy and a resilient food system--proof that it’s always a good time to stand on business (literally and lovingly)!

As this year unfolds, it also marks a personal transition for me. After six years of service, this will be my final year on the Board. It has been an honor to serve this remarkable community, and I look forward to continuing to support our co-op’s growth as an Owner, forever and always. <3

With the steadfast rising of seeds into light,

Alecks Moss

Outgoing Board Vice President

The Common Market Board of Directors

What do you like best about your job?

The autonomy. I get to decide my daily workflow based on the different tasks and deadlines I have.

What is your favorite meal to make?

Well, my spouse does most of the cooking, but when I get a chance, I really enjoy making tofu scramble.

When you have 30 min of free time, what do you do? Either read or work on one of my many unfinished craft projects.

If you were a fruit or vegetable, what would you be and why?

A potato because it's versatile and reliable.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I would become fluent in ASL.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully living in a house, building a family, and working on my career.

What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten?

A vegan burger, milkshake, and sweet potato fries from HipCityVeg in DC.

What’s your food philosophy in 20 words or less? Prioritize local, plant based, and whole foods whenever possible, while also making space for foods that bring you genuine enjoyment and satisfaction.

What do you like best about your job?

The balance and variety! It allows me to work and interact with so many people, while still having some independence. I really like that I get to work with each department in the store, and being able to help both customers and my coworkers in so many different ways.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, what do you do?

Eat a snack and hang out with my cats

If you were a fruit or vegetable, what would you be and why?

A carrot... I also need time to be in the dark before I'm ready to face the world!

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I guess the Olympics inspired me a bit, but I always thought figure skating looked so fun and cool. There's so many things you can do and they are all so impressive.

What is your biggest splurge ingredient? Prairie Breeze cheese!

What is something always in your pantry/fridge? Hot honey

In Our Community

Holiday Light Recycling

Thanks to all of our eco-minded customers, the Co-op was able to recycle about 790 pounds of expired holiday lights! Each year, we collect strands and take them to Pedal Point Recycling (our Community Partner in sustainability), where they break them down into their recyclable parts and keep them out of the landfill.

Street Dog Coalition Donation

The Co-op jumped at the chance to provide a food donation to the local chapter of the Street Dog Coalition for one of their street clinic events in February. The non-profit provides free veterinary care to pets of people experiencing homelessness. Our food donation helped feed the pets' caretakers while their 4-legged friends received care!

Blessed Provisions Diaper & Toiletry Bank

The Common Market 7th Street is now a dropoff location for Blessed Provisions Diaper & Toiletry Bank, the only exclusive diaper and toiletry bank in Frederick County, Maryland. The organization collects and distributes diapers and hygiene products to underserved

families in Frederick County. Visit our 7th Street store donation center to donate diapers, wipes, and feminine hygiene products, or drop donations in on your next shopping trip!

Black History Month Art Pop-up with Taurean Washington

On February 22nd, local artist Taurean Washington filled the Artspiration art space with inspiring portraits, highlighting Black history and culture. Guests included Frederick Mayor Michael O'Connor, Congresswoman April McLain Delaney, and more! The Common Market was proud to sponsor and help organize the event.

Mobilize Frederick Climate Summit 2026

The Co-op was honored to be a sponsor of the annual Mobilize Frederick Climate Summit at Hood College on February 27th. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak with others in our community who are working toward sustainability. The Summit left us energized and excited to continue our sustainability efforts throughout the rest of the year and beyond.

Support the Cooperative Business

Model

-

The Co-op isn't owned by a CEO, but is instead collectively owned by over 10,100 community members. Ownership helps cultivate and expand upon this model of business as an alternative to corporate ownership.

Our Board of Directors:

Alison Wexler, Alecks Moss, Toby Schermerhorn, Kimberly Bloch-Rincan, Nina Carr, Kai Hagen, Armando Martinez, Jaime McKay, and Phil Westcott. Contact the board by emailing board@commonmarket.coop or join us for an online Board meeting.

Upcoming Board meetings:

Everyone is welcome to attend monthly Board meetings, typically held on the 4th Thursday of every month on Zoom. To join a meeting, visit the Classes & Events page of our website and navigate to the event date.

- Thursday, March 26

- Thursday, April 23 (hybrid meeting - join online or in-person at Route 85!)

- Thursday, May 21

Ends Policies:

The Common Market Co-op operates in order to achieve 4 ends:

1. A prosperous, just, and vibrant local food economy.

2. An economically successful and growing business operated on the model of cooperative ownership.

3. A community whose members are educated about food, health and wellness choices, about social and environmental issues in food production, and about the value of cooperatives as an alternative business model.

4. A model for the use of environmental resources that is increasingly sustainable in the products we sell, the business we operate, and the practices we promote and support in the larger community.

Why Ownership Matters

Co-op Ownership Supports:

The local food system – When you choose to shop here, a larger portion of your dollar stays in the community, helping to support the viability and economic success of local farms and businesses.

Ethical and sustainable business practices – The Coop supports international brands who prioritize fair business practices including fair trade coffee, slaveryfree chocolate, cruelty-free beauty products, and more.

Community outreach – Shopping at the Co-op helps us donate money and fresh food to local non-profit organizations.

The cooperative business model – A cooperative is a business owned by the people who use its services. We are not owned by a corporation, but a community of over 10,100 community members. Your investment in the Co-op helps expand awareness of this jointlyowned and democratically-controlled business model.

Local jobs – The Common Market is operated by over 160 dedicated employees who are helpful, team-spirited, and welcoming. Your Ownership ensures that we can provide livable wages and benefits to our team.

Our 8 Cooperative Principles

These are guidelines by which cooperatives put their values into practice.

1. Voluntary & Open Membership

Anyone 18 years and older may join.

2. Democratic Member Control

Owners vote on proposed bylaw changes, elect the Board of Directors, and may run for a seat on the board.

3. Member Economic Participation

All owners purchase a legal equity share and further invest through shopping at their co-op.

4. Autonomy and Independence

Co-ops are controlled from within. No outside influences compromise the values of the co-op or its owners.

5. Education, Training, and Information

Co-ops provide education and training to owners, elected representatives, managers, and the general public.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

All co-ops seek to help the model thrive. They work together, not against each other.

7. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Co-ops contribute to the local community and economy.

8. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Cooperatives believe we are stronger when a proactive effort is put forth to engage everyone in governance, management and representation.

We Are Frederick The Common Market Community Mural Comes to Life

You’ve probably noticed the transformation of a large blank wall at the 7th Street store where local artist, Yemi Fagbohun and his team of artists and students - from Frederick Community College, Hood College, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Frederick County Public Schools - have been busily sketching, tracing, painting, and will soon be hanging some 3D elements, to create an inspirational mural: We Are Frederick!

The diverse group of friends in the mural represent the wide variety of people who call Frederick home. Their dandelion puffs being blown across the mural represent the hope, wishes, dreams and community of Frederick past, present, and future.

We invite you to visit the Common Market Coop 7th Steet to be part of the magic, say hello, or snap a photo. Tag us in your photos with the mural on social media and we'll repost, with a chance to win a Common Market gift card!

Note that Yemi is no stranger to the Common Market. A loyal shopper since the Rt. 85 store was on the opposite side of Buckeystown Pike, Yemi is the same artist who created the etched design of Downtown Frederick on the cafe glass windows at the current Rt. 85 store!

So, if you’ve not seen that design, just another reason to visit the Common Market Co-op to enjoy the art, good vibes, and healthy food!

We hope you enjoy these progress photos of the mural being brought to life! Look for more updates soon as the finishing touches are added to this masterpiece.

Sustainability

at the co+op

Our team has been hard at work expanding our sustainability efforts! Here are a few of the initiatives we've been working on:

• Textile Recycling & Clothing Swaps

According to Helpsy.com, about 85% of our clothes end up in the trash (that's 100 lbs. per person per year in the U.S.)! The Co-op is doing their best to help you divert textiles and unwanted clothes away from the landfill with our twice-yearly Textile Recycling events (in partnership with the Frederick County Division of Solid Waste & Recycling and Helpsy), and Co-op Clothing Swaps! Check our calendar for upcoming events.

• Magic Cycle Donations & Composting

The Co-op is working hard to reduce food waste at both store locations. We do this by donating usable food items to our friends at Magic Cycle,

a community-powered organization working to rescue foods at the end of their shelf life, but are otherwise usable. We also prioritize composting food waste via Compost Crew, Frederick City's local composting service.

• Sustainable Packaging Options

Our Grocery and Wellness teams are constantly on the lookout for products with sustainable packaging. Not to mention our package-free bulk department, featuring pantry staples, coffee, wellness products, and more.

• Specialized Recycling

Visit our store's exit vestibules to see our recycling options, including batteries, baby food pouches, oral care product packaging, and more (options vary by store location).

Cherry sauce

2 cups fresh or frozen pitted sweet cherries

1 ⁄4 cup minced shallots

1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon chili powder

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

1 ⁄4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chicken stock, divided

1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon arrowroot

1. In a shallow pan, stir together lemon juice, avocado oil, salt, pepper and shallots. Place pork chops in pan, coat with marinade on both sides, and let rest for 15 to 30 minutes.

2. For the sauce, put the pitted cherries in a

small saucepan. Add the shallots, chili powder, vinegar, honey, salt and ¾ cup of the chicken stock. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Cook for about 12 minutes to reduce until thickened. Whisk the arrowroot into the remaining stock and add to the hot pan, whisking as it thickens.

3. Prepare a charcoal fire or preheat the broiler. Place chops on grill or under broiler, about four inches from heat, and cook until browned on one side (about four minutes). Turn and cook the other side until lightly browned and slightly firm when pressed with a metal spatula (about three minutes).

4. Top the chops with cherry sauce and serve immediately.

Take advantage of fresh sweet cherries to make a sauce that perfectly complements savory grilled pork. When fresh cherries are out of season, a bag of frozen cherries works equally well.

Green Papaya Salad (Som Tum)

Serves 4. Total time: 15 minutes.

1 medium, hard green papaya

4 cloves garlic

2 large jalapeño peppers, stems removed

½ cup French beans or green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces

2 large ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges

2 tablespoons fish sauce or tamari soy sauce

½ teaspoon salt

¼ cup lime juice

1 tablespoon brown sugar

½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped

1. Peel, seed and shred the papaya. Place the garlic and peppers in a mortar and crush into small chunks or pulse in a food processor. Add the beans and pound or pulse to break up but not puree. Scrape into in a large bowl and add the tomatoes and papaya.

2. In a cup, stir together the fish sauce or tamari, salt, lime juice and brown sugar and pour over the salad. Mix thoroughly. Top with peanuts.

Serves 4 to 6. Total time: 20 minutes.

1 pound cooked chicken breast, chopped

1 ⁄ 2 cup full-fat Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon salt

1 ⁄4 teaspoon pepper

2 large scallions, chopped

2 kiwi fruit, peeled and chopped

1 large orange, peeled and chopped

1 avocado, diced

1 ⁄4 cup slivered almonds, toasted

1. Place the chopped chicken in a large bowl.

2. In a cup, stir the yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and pour over the chicken.

3. Add the scallions, kiwi, orange and avocado and toss to mix.

4. Mix in almonds just before serving.

Chicken Kiwi Salad

Pomegranate Glazed Salmon

Serves 4. Total time: 25 minutes.

4 6-ounce salmon fillets, skin on

2 cups unsweetened pomegranate juice

2 tablespoons light brown sugar

1 ⁄4 cup chopped shallots

1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 ⁄4 teaspoon coarse salt

1 ⁄ 2 teaspoon black pepper

1. Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels and allow them to come to room temperature while you make the glaze.

2. In a small saucepan, combine the pomegranate juice, brown sugar and shallots, and bring to a boil over high heat. Boil for about 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until reduced to about 3 ⁄4 cup. Pour into a metal or glass measuring cup and let cool. When slightly cooled, whisk in the arrowroot to thicken.

3. In a large saute pan, heat the olive oil over high heat. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the salmon. Place the fillets in the hot oil, skin side up, and sear for about a minute and a half, until the salmon releases from the pan when a thin spatula is inserted underneath. Carefully turn the salmon pieces.

4. Take the pan off the heat and carefully pour the pomegranate mixture in the pan (since the pan is hot, pour it in on one side and tilt to cover the bottom of the pan). Return the pan to the stove; cook for about 2 minutes longer, depending on the thickness of the fillets, using your spatula to scoop the glaze over the filets. Serve hot over cooked brown rice or rice pilaf.

When pomegranates are in season, scatter a few brilliant red seeds atop the salmon fillets for a finishing touch.
