Toys museum

We organized "Toy Museum" in which were, besides toys made in Tiny hands atelier, Croatian traditional wooden toys painted by hand, which are under the protection of UNESCO as cultural heritage. We also exhibited photos of traditional toys that were made by grandparents from our region, which we obtained in collaboration with the students of the University of Zagreb, Department of Teacher Education Faculty in ÄŒakovec. All of the toys were displayed in our kindergarten. As the project grew, so did our museum as well. Shelves got bigger and number of toys increased.

Traditional toys

• Traditional toys, like our grandmothers used to have, were all made of natural materials. They played all together. Small and big kids, older and younger.. It did not play a role when it come to play. They were all together. Hardly any child had bought toys or one that would be produced by industry. They were expensive and parents could not afford such a toy. But they did not care for such toys. They were happy and satisfied with what they have and what they themselves could do showing their creativity and imagination. Dolls were made out of different materials, such as wool, yarn, wood, corn leaves... They also made balls out of fabric, making a small lump and stiching it together so they could play with it. In autunm children would collect natural materials like nuts and make boats out of their shelves or chestnuts for makeing all kinds of animals.

UNESCO heritage traditional manufacturing of children’s wooden toys in Hrvatsko Zagorje

www.vrticdjecjisvijet.hr

Wooden children’s toys are recognizable traditional products of Hrvatsko zagorje with a long history. Precisely in this area, a peculiar production of toys was developed in the 19th century and it has been preserved in some villages such as Laz, Stubica, Tugonica and Marija Bistrica. All these villages are on the route to the greatest pilgrimage site in Croatia - Marija Bistrica. From very simple reed toys, the assortment widened so that, at times, one hundred and twenty different toys were produced. The method of their production was passed on from generation to generation in some families and has been kept to this day. The peculiarity is that they are handmade by men and mostly painted by women. There can never be two completely identical toys since each one is handmade. The material used is soft wood from the area, willow, lime, beech and maple that craftsmen hew after drying and then cut and shape it with the help of wooden or cardboard models. In painting they use eco paint and their base colours are usually red, yellow or blue. They paint the toys with floral and geometrical ornaments. Today, about fifty types of toys are made, ranging from various reeds, tamburitzas, animal toys and objects of common use.
