UNDERSTANDING THE TERM ‘BARIATRIC’

See our money saving Bariatric products overleaf!

WHAT IS A BARIATRIC? The definition of Bariatric is based on an individual who has the BMI of 40 or more and/or is someone weighing in excess of 25 stone (150kg).

BARIATRIC OR HEAVY DUTY? Often the term Bariatric is used to describe individuals who are large in size but this does not necessarily mean they require Bariatric equipment. Sometimes equipment classed as ‘Heavy Duty’ is suitable and is a lot less of an expense. Naturally there are other health considerations that need to be taken into account such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, lack of mobility or sleep issues, but when talking about sheer size and weight even if a client ticks the ‘bariatric’ box it does not always mean they need to have equipment promoted as bariatric by many manufacturers.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT FOR ME TO KNOW? It is of prime importance when looking at saving on costs without effecting the quality or suitability of a product. The Bariatric range of products can be very expensive as it caters for the higher levels of user weight – often up to 70 stone (445kg). This level of strength is often way in excess of what is actually required for a patient.

HOW CAN CLH HELP? Today there are many products suitable for Bariatrics but classified as ‘Heavy Duty’ and we have provided a brief insight into what we can offer overleaf…
