A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO

Dear JFS Friends, Supporters, and Collaborative Partners,

We hope this Report to the Community finds you and your families in continued good health. Although the wide spread pandemic has dwindled considerably, the community continues to feel the effects of new variants and the “aftershocks” of COVID-19 especially in housing, food, and health insecurity. The older adult and immigrant communities have been especially hard hit. Earlier in the year, we embarked on resettling Afghan families evacuating Afghanistan and currently we are working with Ukrainian war refugees. These have been fast and furious operations and we are so glad to have great partners like the Shapiro Foundation, Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Chestnut Hill Realty (CHR), local foundations including the MetroWest Health Foundation, the Foundation for MetroWest, the Sudbury Foundation, and many faith-based organizations that have stepped up in a major way to help us welcome these families. The following Report will show the immensely positive impact JFS made in the community, especially for the most vulnerable families amongst us. You will note this Report is briefer than years past and will only have a few printed copies in keeping with our Climate Change Policy. Note that every program will have a QR code to help you take a deeper dive in our work online.

With everything else that was occurring, 2022 was a year where we initiated the first phase of our strategic plan - program integration and hiring the professional staff needed for growth. As has been the case in many industries, finding the right staff to fill positions has taken longer than anticipated. After much searching, we hired several new staff members and are now positioned to start the growth phase of our strategy, which means working with our collaborative partners to implement (in an innovative and sustainable manner) solutions to some of our current and future social challenges.

ACCELERATING SOCIAL, ACADEMIC AND HEALTH EQUITY 2

The Whole Family/Whole Community approach of our new strategic plan will also involve the increased use of volunteers, which will be a focus of the coming year. We will also continue to be an area convener and leader in Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), especially in fighting racism and antisemitism and being part of the community catalyst for social justice.

We are also excited to announce two other initiatives that will be launching soon, the JFS-Rashi Learning and Leadership Council and the JFS Generation to Generation Legacy Circle. These two programs will create opportunities to expand the JFS family in new and creative ways - more information will be shared in the near future.

JFS is a great philanthropic investment for social good. JFS has a multi-year 4 Star rating in Charity Navigator (with a 100% perfect score!) and is in the top 1% of over 9,000 nonprofits rated by Charity Navigator.

Many thanks to our Board of Directors and our current donors and supporters. We invite others to join us - it is only with your involvement and generosity that JFS’ collective impact is possible.

Finally, we want to thank our amazing professional staff and volunteers that have continued to go beyond the call of duty in responding to the needs of our clients and their families. We wish you a healthy holiday season and look forward to a 2023 filled with new innovative ideas and ways to better serve our community.

Sincerely,

JFS 5 YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN - 2022-2027 GROWTH AND IMPACT

JFS strives to support the needs of older adults, immigrants and Jewish families in the Metrowest Greater Boston area. With a focus on GROWTH and increased IMPACT, JFS will integrate service offerings across departments to embrace a Whole Family/Whole Community supported service model so that when individuals and families come to JFS for help, they will gain access to the shortterm assistance they need to address the immediate crisis, as well other interventions designed to achieve long-term stability. Resources will be dedicated to support three focus areas: 1. Enhancing Programming; 2. Enhancing Brand Identity and Communications; and 3. Enhancing Philanthropy and Financial Sustainability. All with a keen focus to Accelerate Social, Academic and Health Equity.

To support this model, which will strive to engage with and serve the whole family, JFS will:

• Harness the power of volunteers across programs in creative and innovative ways.

• Develop new and collaborative partnerships to increase access to resources and expertise.

• Mobilize the whole community by enlisting family members, friends, neighbors, organizations and other stakeholders to shore up organic supports and fill gaps in the social safety net.

• Recruit Board and Staff members that are diverse in experience and skillsets to meet the needs of clients and to ensure organizational sustainability.

• Lead Tikkun Olam (repair the world) initiatives that fight racism and antisemitism and advance social, academic and health equity in our community.

• Diversify philanthropic goals for future financial sustainability.

Assisting Jewish families struggling to make ends meet is a core mission of JFS.

Devastating medical diagnoses, mental health crises, job loss and extended unemployment, divorce, domestic abuse and death of a family member can quickly drive a normally stable household into emotional and financial distress.

While the reasons for coming to JFS are as varied as the individuals and families seeking help, each client receives the same compassionate attention, gaining access to a wide range of supports and services to address their immediate needs and plot a course to a better future.

Services include: Intensive Case Management, Emergency Financial Assistance, Lucy and Joe Press Food Pantry, Holiday Assistance, Information and Referral, Ready for Success Employment Support

When a young Jewish mom separated from her husband, she needed help getting on her feet. Through the JFS and CJP Anti-Poverty Initiative, case managers were able to help, providing not only short-term assistance but also long-term support. Helping vulnerable older adults live independently in the community is a core mission of JFS.

While most of us envision retirement as an enjoyable time, the reality for many is that it is a time of going without – not being able to afford essentials like food, rent or medicine, grieving the loss of companionship or meaningful interaction, suffering reduced functioning due to debilitating health conditions.

JFS stands with these community members, providing a wide range of services that ensure they have the basics they need, and the care and support they deserve as they navigate the challenges that come with aging.

Services include: Case Management, Meal Deliveries, Wellness Checks, Social/ Activity Groups, Health Screenings, Basic Needs Distributions, Holiday Assistance, Geriatric Care Management, Virtual Support Groups, Patient Navigator, Virtual Visitors, Homecare

The Patient Navigator service is one of the many ways JFS supports the needs of older adults in Metrowest. Go to JFSMW. org learn more about JFS services for adults aged 60+.

RESPONSIVE, INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS

Advancing equity for immigrant families in our community is a core mission of JFS.

Low wages, language barriers and limited experience with American systems are some of the challenges faced by today’s immigrant families. For those already struggling, the ‘aftershocks’ of the pandemic compounded by rising costs due to inflation have pushed many toward ruin, making it nearly impossible to pay bills and keep children safe and healthy.

JFS stands by these families, developing innovative solutions that support the financial, academic and social needs of those most at risk so they have the basic essentials that they need, even in the worst of times.

Services include: Basic Needs Distributions, Case Management, Financial Assistance, Children’s Clothing Closet, Resettlement Services, Citizenship Preparation and Application, Employment Support, English as a Second Language (ESL), Pathways to College Success, Information and Referral

Fearing for her safety, a young single mother fled her native country to seek asylum in the U.S. With the help of JFS case managers, she has reunited with her children and is building a new future for her family. COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATED ASSISTANCE: THE CHILDREN’S CLOTHING CLOSET HAS A NEW HOME AT THE RESOURCE ROOM OF THE FRAMINGHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Launched in 2016, the Children’s Clothing Closet provides a seasonal response to the clothing needs of the elementary school age children in the Metrowest community, with a specific focus on the families most in need in Framingham. The three-pronged operational model includes seasonal Ready to Wear packages, pop-up shopping events, and individual/family emergency distributions. Originally piloted in partnership with the Harmony Grove and Brophy Elementary Schools and Framingham Adult ESL Plus, the Children’s Clothing Closet has found a new home at the Resource Room of the Framingham Public Schools. This move represents an aligning of mutual goals and deepening of the collaborative partnership between the Framingham Public School system and JFS and enables staff to easily and efficiently provide assistance to families and students as needs arise.

Key Community Partners: Framingham Public Schools, Hope and Comfort, Dignity Matters, Operation Warm, Delivering Good, Good 360, Learning Express, CJP, TJX, CocoTree Kids, Family Promise Metrowest and Yale Appliance Foundation.

Demonstrating JFS’ commitment to innovation, the Children’s Clothing Closet has evolved to meet the growing needs of young families in Framingham. Today, in addition to seasonal clothing, personal care items and emergency food supplies, staff are regularly scheduled to help with a wide range of needs, including completing citizenship applications and signing up for public benefits.

JFS facilitates opportunities for corporate philanthropy that have a direct impact in our community. One example is the ongoing partnership with the Yale Appliance Foundation that donated over 550 pairs of shoes and boots, distributed during two employee service day events. Far right: Homecare Training Manager Dámaris Medina-Hernández works with Yale Appliance employees during an outdoor event at the FPS Resource Room.

I’ve walked past this Resource Room and seen families in tears because this is a level of hospitality that they haven’t encountered coming to our country for the first time.

Led by Board Member Elana Margolis, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA spent their 12th Annual Service Day sorting, packaging and loading over 2,000 items of seasonal children’s clothing to be distributed to families in need.

THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERISM

Volunteers are the lifeblood of JFS. They come to JFS looking for an opportunity to do good – what they find is a partnership through which they can have real and significant impact in the lives of those who need help the most.

Distributions of clothing and school supplies, holiday meal deliveries, wellness checks, assistance with medical appointments, English as a Second Language tutoring and acculturation support are just some of the ways volunteers fuel our work in the community. It is only through the Power of Volunteerism that JFS is able to make a difference in the lives of over 7,500 people each year.

Thank you to our over 300 volunteers for partnering with JFS to have meaningful impact in our community!

Celebration of Gratitude – As world events have brought tragedy to our doorsteps, JFS has worked
over 130 war refugees from Ukraine and Afghanistan so that families can be safe in our community. This work has only been possible through collaborative partnerships with foundations and faith organizations that have stepped up to ‘Welcome the Stranger’, providing necessary resources and volunteer-power to embrace these families into our caring community. Shown here is a celebration held by two families supported by JFS and Temple Beth Elohim, Wellesley to thank those who came to their aid. The festivities highlighted their love for Ukraine featuring traditional food and stories, and the children created and auctioned artwork, raising funds that were donated to JFS. Team members pictured above include Board Member Debbie Gotbetter, former Board Member Barbara Shapiro and her husband Ed Shapiro. Barbara and Ed are Co-Trustees of The Shapiro Foundation.
