Rolling Hills primary School
A Special Message from Mrs. Santarpia Dear Rolling Hills Families, Happy New Year to all of our families at Rolling Hills. We are excited for 2019 and all that the year brings. A special thank you to all of our members of the SBMT! They have been working diligently on our Partners in Reading (PIR) calendar that we will unveil later this month. It will include over two weeks of fun filled activities and special events that help foster the love of reading. We hope everyone can join in on the fun. We are looking forward to Warm Up to Reading in January and Family Fitness Night in early March as well as many more exciting PTA and Arts in Education programs and field trips. Please continue to access both Backpack Mail and download the Commack App if you have not done so already to learn more about our activities and special events at Rolling Hills! Warmly, Jessica Santarpia Principal

What a busy time of the year it is in Kindergarten! The holidays are behind us and we have started a new year! Learning numbers and number concepts have been exciting as we work and play with many manipulatives in the classroom. Playing and talking about numbers and their relationships enhances the understanding and supports solid brain development. In English Language Arts, we are mastering our sound knowledge and listening for sounds in words. Our focus is to be able to hear beginning, middle and ending sounds and write the appropriate letters. Labeling things in our drawings and learning the structure of a sentence will provide students with an opportunity to strengthen and continue to master their sound knowledge. The character trait of Respect is one that we are speaking a lot about at this time of year, and all the ways we can show respect at school and at home. By honoring our STARS at our Gatherings, we are learning more about each other and sharing examples of making good choices. As February rolls around, the kindergarten students will have fun counting to 100, celebrating the 100th day of school, and learning different ways to make 100. Celebrating Valentine’s Day and sharing ways to show our love for others will be a focus as we continue to incorporate our academics into these themes. Songs and stories will be taught and shared, and learning them will be fun!
