STUDENTS REACH NEW DEPTHS!

NCS SUCCESS WITH 1000TH MEMBER!

PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE The New Year brings a strong reminder that we are likely to see Ofsted this year and it is now over 3 years since our last full inspection. There are a number of areas of concern, particularly the decline in overall success rates over the last two years (impacted by the raising of the participation age, compulsory requirement to study English and maths and the high profile of sub-level 3 provision) and the lack of consistency across our programme areas. However, I am pleased to see that retention rates are currently a few percentage points higher than at the same time last year and it is essential that we improve outcomes for learners in 2016. Last week saw the publication of the DfE School & College Performance Tables and I am delighted that we have achieved the best vocational value added scores of any Norfolk / Cambridgeshire college. Our destinations data for 2014/15 is also very strong and we have many other strengths. I will produce a ‘key messages for Ofsted’ document for all staff in the next few weeks (quicker if necessary!). I was pleased that the feedback form the Ofsted thematic review against the PREVENT duty was broadly very positive. We have made a good start and now need to maintain progress (training, awareness and embedding). I was pleased to see that one of our apprentices, Ashleigh Everett, (Intermediate hairdressing apprentice with Boldero & Filby) was highly commended at the recent National Apprentice of the Year Awards and I am looking forward to going ‘back to the floor’ with one of our apprentices and attending our Apprenticeship Awards event during National Apprenticeships Week. Best wishes,

Some of our programmes are match-funded by the European Social Fund

STAFF NEWS WORKPLACE CHALLENGE RETURNS FOR 2016

Already broken that New Year’s resolution? Maybe you just need a little guidance to get you on track!

The workplace challenge is now well underway but you can still lead a healthier life this February and the challenge’s website is a great way of keeping on track. Workplace Challenge is a national campaign to help encourage more workplaces in Britain to get active! The process is very simple: every time you participate in physical activity - no matter how big or small - you log your hours or minutes on the online database. This database will give you information on how well you are doing individually and also, if you’re competitive, how well you are doing against other colleagues in your department, college or nationally! If you would like to sign up or would like more information please log onto www. workplacechallenge.co.uk (When filling in the application form please put the postcode PE30 2QW if you work in Norfolk or your own work place postcode if you work at Cambridge or Wisbech). From Katherine Middleton, CWA’s energy and environment officer: Did you know that you can rack up the points just by travelling to and from work? There are also leaderboards for carbon dioxide saving and miles travelled through active travel. Car travel accounts for more carbon dioxide emissions than any other form of transport in the UK and personal car travel is the single biggest contributor to personal carbon dioxide emissions. Active travel means something as simple as walking down to the next bus stop, getting off the bus a stop early or parking a few streets away from the college. Many car journeys are just one mile, which would normally take just 20 minutes to walk.

Walking those one-mile trips could save you over £160 each year in fuel! And then there are the obvious health benefits, such as a reducing your risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers. Alternatively, you could try cycling to work. You don’t have to wear Lycra (unless you really want to) and, as long as you buy some basic safety gear like a helmet, lights and a lock, it’s very inexpensive. The college has a number of secure cycle shelters, including shelters at the King’s Lynn and Wisbech campuses just for staff. So why not leave your car at home once or twice a week and get active! Fancy playing badminton? Want to get active in 2016? From 5-6pm on a Tuesday evening in King’s Lynn, we are offering FREE turn and play badminton sessions at the Sports Campus, open to all CWA Staff regardless of ability! All equipment will be provided, just wear practical clothing! If you would like to attend or would like more information please email Sara Edwards sportsdevelopment@cwa.ac.uk

FASHION STUDENTS SHOW SUPPORT FOR BREAST CANCER CARE

Students from the Wisbech campus have been busy making bags with a difference to support Breast Cancer Care. Learners studying towards diplomas and extended diplomas in fashion, clothing and textiles have been busy weaving, sewing and embroidering bras, turning them into one-of-a-kind evening bags. The bags have been on sale at various events including the College of West Anglia end of year show and a silent auction held during a fashion show at Elme Hall Hotel, Wisbech.

The distinctive accessories have raised a total of £199 for Breast Cancer Care and it is hoped that similar product projects will raise even more money in the future. Michelle James, course director for fashion, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for students to use their creativity to create unique works of art whilst raising money for charity. I’m proud of their achievements in this project.” Fashion student Saffron Brown said: “Taking part in the bra bag project was not only fun and different, but also very rewarding, knowing the money we have raised is going to Breast Cancer Care.”

EXCHANGE STUDENTS GET TASTE OF HEALTHY LIFE

As part of the EU project, Healthy Life, five students from Chelmza in Poland visited CWA for a week commencing 11 January.

Stacey Martin, LSO for hospitality and tourism, said: “Friday was a busy lunch service and the students received some really positive feedback on the dishes they had prepared.”

They spent time in the King’s Lynn campus classrooms and kitchens with hospitality students, learning about the benefits of healthy foods, cooking methods and creating balanced and nutritious dishes.

As part of this two year project, we will also welcome Romanian students to the college in February followed later in the programme by French & Bulgarian students.

They worked in the kitchens with hospitality lecturer Alex Harrisson, to produce their newlylearnt healthy dishes, which were served to members of the public in Novus Restaurant.

Students from CWA will travel to Chelmza, Poland, in March this year to learn more about Healthy Life across Europe.

NEW COURSES GET THUMBS UP

28 student apprentices started on the @one Alliance sponsored courses at CWA Wisbech – 18 on the @oneAlliance sponsored level 3 engineering (electrical and mechanical) qualification, and 10 on the level 1 City & Guilds construction course sponsored by Anglian Water and its four alliances. As well as undertaking classroom work, the students also take part in practical workshops led by @one Alliance digital asset creation team manager Mark Hedges.

To see how the theory learnt in the classroom is put into practice, students have been on site visits to places such as Whittlingham Water Recycling Centre and will going on follow-up visits to see progress over the coming months.

Student apprentices with Gary Slater

Gary Slater, a team leader for the digital asset creation team, also helping to run the workshop, said: “It’s exciting to meet our future team mates and to see their enthusiasm. There is some real talent among these apprentices. The facilities on campus are superb and we are really pleased with our partnership with CWA so far.”

STUDENTS REACH NEW DEPTHS!

Instructors at West Norfolk Sub Aqua Club have been working alongside students from the uniformed services department, putting them through the first parts of their ocean diver training.

The trainees are poised to complete their open water dives, after which they will each have a qualification that is recognised around the world. There are several areas of common ground between elements of the uniformed services course and the art of scuba diving, as it blends discipline and theory with risk planning and management. As well as practical skills, the learners are developing a better understanding of planning and mitigation of risks in a potentially hostile environment, something that will help them should they go on to seek careers in the police, military or another uniformed service.

The Sub Aqua Club is looking forward to bringing the group through their open water dives to qualification before the end of the academic year and also continuing their relationship with CWA by talking to this year’s uniformed services students to assess interest in running another course in the future. The Club meets on a Tuesday evening locally at the St James swimming pool in King’s Lynn.

MAKE CWA YOUR VALENTINE!

The College is taking part in a regional marketing event called ‘I Love My College’ in time for Valentine’s Day.

On Friday 12 February, students will be encouraged to take selfies with the ‘I Love My College’ signs situated in social areas at all three campuses, in order to be in with a chance of winning a £50 Love2Shop voucher to treat their valentine (or themselves!). Students simply need to upload their selfie on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and tell us why they love CWA, using the hashtag #ilovemycollege and tagging CWA’s Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account. By uploading to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram students will get 3 entries into the competition! Everyone who takes a selfie will also receive a packet of Love Hearts sweets - plus a warm feeling in their heart! The I Love My College campaign is the brainchild of the New Anglia College’s Marketing group, which is a working group of 11 Further Education providers across East Anglia who meet regularly to promote the sector.

OUR APPRENTICES ARE ACHIEVING!

CWA is proud to announce that its students are dominating the Apprentice / Trainee of the Year category of the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Mayor’s Business Awards this year. Ashleigh Everett, 20, from Hunstanton, is not only nominated at the Mayor’s Business Awards but also is heading to London on the 26th January to the National Apprenticeships Awards at Grosvenor House, after winning her regional category.

Harry Barker, 17, from Downham Market, is nominated for his work with Aspires Ltd, a contract packers company that offers employment experience for adults with learning difficulties, assembling and packing a wide variety of goods which are sourced primarily from local businesses.

CWA apprentice chef Tyler Dawes, 18, from Gayton, is nominated for his work at Congham Hall. Last year, Principal David Pomfret worked alongside Tyler in the kitchen at Congham Hall, as part of National Apprenticeship week ‘Back to the Floor’ event. David helped prepare and cook everything including carrot cakes, macaroons, fruit compote and sticky toffee pudding. The Mayor’s Business Awards take place at Alive Lynnsport in King’s Lynn on March 4.

WISBECH STUDENTS AT THE ART OF DRUG-DRIVING SAFETY MESSAGE

Wisbech campus graphic design students have been put at the heart of a safer driving campaign. Cambridgeshire County Council road safety officers set the Wisbech students a brief to help raise awareness about the dangers of taking drugs and driving.

The winning concept was designed by Jake Howlett. His series of posters with the slogan “Drugs can Colour Your Senses” has now been given approval from the Department for Transport to use for a local campaign starting in February. This will aim to promote awareness of the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of drugs.

Maree Richards, Cambridgeshire County Council’s road safety officer, said: “Working with these students has been a great experience; they have amazing talent and an understanding of how to convey these important messages in a creative way.” Jake, who has since started a degree in graphic design at Norwich University of the Arts, said: “I am really happy that my work was chosen and will be used to promote this important message. Drug driving is a very important issue and to be involved in the campaign design was educational and exciting.”

Following the introduction of a new law this year, police can now carry out road side tests to detect drug/drivers in England and Wales.

FUNDRAISING FANATICS!

CWA staff and students are always doing something significant for our communities and charity and the hair and beauty department are no exception!

They have raised £194.67 for Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), the only international cancer support charity, providing practical and very effective free services for women and teenagers suffering from the visible side effects from cancer treatment. Donations were raised by face painting, students offering massages at your desk at the King’s Lynn campus and a prize raffle. The department held a charity event in the last week of the autumn term in aid of Scotty’s Little Soldiers. The students came to college in festive attire, organised games and made cakes to raise money and awareness for the charity - £135 was raised!

Every year the health and social care and the childcare departments are a ‘Force4Good’ by supporting a variety of both local and national charities - and occasionally overseas. This is considered an important part of the faculty’s principles for developing students as future care workers, but also is something both staff and students have all come to enjoy. So far they’ve raised: • £350 for Macmillan Nurses (Course 1037 SEA - Social Enterprise Activities) • £44 to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Children’s Ward (Stepping Out Childcare course - cake bake) • £165 shared between the RNLI and Cancer Research (Stepping Out Retail course - cake bake and dressing up) • £60 Text Santa - shared between Macmillan, Make-a-wish foundation and Save the Children (Childcare and Staff) In addition, item collections were made for the Food Bank and Purfleet Trust Christmas boxes prior to Christmas. The department has raised a total to date of £619, with more events planned for this term. Keep up the good work!

COLLEGE OF WEST ANGLIA CELEBRATES NCS SUCCESS WITH 1000TH MEMBER! On Wednesday 16 December 2015, 97 young people graduated from the National Citizen Service (NCS), at a prestigious ceremony held at King’s Lynn Town Hall, bringing the total number of CWA graduates past the landmark 1000th member. The NCS programme is a national scheme delivered locally by our college during school holidays throughout the year. Melissa Crofts, 17, was the 1000th member to join the CWA NCS cohort. She is currently studying childcare at the King’s Lynn campus. Young people participate in team-building and community-focused activities, designed to develop confidence, improve interpersonal skills and help them learn about the community through social action projects.

Melissa Crofts with Paul Harrison, Lee Mallot and Sasha Coutrney-Jenner

This wave saw students give back to their local communities through fundraising events for local charities - including bake sales, bucket collections and sponsored walks for Red Wellies - a clean-up programme for St John’s Church in March and litter picking in the walks. Graduates are encouraged to continue their NCS journey by either becoming volunteers or team leaders on future waves and the night saw two previous NCS graduates Freddie Schunmann and Aleksandrs (Sasha) Setela graduate from the mentor programme. Both mentors now qualify to return as paid assistant team leaders. Head of faculty for public services Andrew Gedge said: “Our NCS cohort has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and it is absolutely fantastic that we have now passed the 1000 members mark. We will continue to grow in 2016, with our next wave of students heading out in February half term.” Freddie Schunmann and Aleksandrs Setela

PC USE IN OUR LRCS As you may be aware, there have been a number of changes to the operation of the LRC this academic year, as we improve and develop the service to better meet the needs of the college. Following on from our previous announcement about the introduction of MyPC, we have now rolled out the ability for staff to book a block of PCs in any of our college LRCs. Our aim has not changed from that described in the restructure outcome that all PCs in the LRCs should be available for individual learners to use on a drop in basis for private study. To facilitate this we will continue to have a certain number of PC sin each LRC that are reserved for individual learner use and not available for group bookings. This is to ensure that we retain the potential for learners to access IT, even at times when block bookings are taking place. However, we recognise that there may be times when groups need to be accommodated so we have made this possible in certain areas of all LRCs, and these can now be booked by staff for occasional group use. It is important to recognise that if you need PCs for your group on a regular basis, you will still need to contact MIS to see if there are other options, as our LRCs are not designated for longer term repeated group use. If you would like to make use of the LRC PCs for use with a group, you will need to book at least 24 hours in advance. This is to minimise disruption to learners who may be using the area for general private study use. We will not ask learners who are already logged in to move if they are already using the PCs and engaged in private study, in order to accommodate a group, so please plan ahead. You will however be welcome to drop in with your group at any time and we will do our best to accommodate you, however you will receive no preferential treatment above any other users of the LRC.

To request a group booking at any site, you can: • Email lrc@col-westanglia.ac.uk, stating the site, day, start and end times of your required session and number of PCs needed. • Call the LRC on x2306 with the same information. • Visit the LRC and make your booking in person, with a member of the LRC team. What happens once you have requested a booking? • You will receive an email notification, confirming your booking. This will include: Details of the PCs that have been allocated to your group. • Wherever possible you will be allocated PC within the same area, however this may not always be possible. • Confirmation of the date and time of your booking. • A password that your learners will need to enter prior and in addition to logging on as usual to the PC. Please note that if the PCs are not accessed after 15 minutes they will when be released for general drop in use. It is vitally important that you check all of the information contained in your booking confirmation email when you receive it, as it may not be possible to correct it at a later date. The LRC team will be on-hand to support you at the time of your booking. If you have any questions about this or any other aspects of the LRC, please contact clare.pelling@cwa.ac.uk.

GOVERNOR PROFILE DOWNHAM MARKET ACADEMY – HOW DO WE HELP? RICHARD BRADLEY As well as head of faculty for business, humanities, science and computing at CWA, I am currently chair of governors at Downham Market Academy. I chair meetings of the governing body and help to shape the agenda for discussion to ensure that we fulfil our statutory duties with regard to oversight of policies and procedures. The role of the governors is to hold the academy leadership to account for the quality of the students’ experience, the academic and financial performance of the academy. We are involved in the life of the academy through visits, learning walks, student focus groups and accountability reviews with staff and we attend public events at the academy, as well as involvement in disciplinary meetings, when required. As a body, we collectively represent the academy and the interests of the Downham Market community and act as a critical friend to the principal and his senior team. On a personal note, it is very satisfying to see improvements in behaviour and performance at the Academy and to have played some part in supporting this.

PRAISE PAGE The hair and beauty department would like to thank Gill for her support and for being part of our team. Good luck for the future and keep in touch!

Michelle Blake would like to say thank you to her team for being kind, generous and thoughtful, I’m very lucky to work with all of you.

I would like to thank the entire property services department for being such a great team to work with. The college simply could not run without you, yet so much of what you all do is unseen by so many. I am proud to have been part of the team for the past 7 years and will miss you all. Ruth Martin

On Friday after my day at work I went home feeling satisfied with my days work, I said to my partner ‘I love my job’. I would like to say that this is due to the nice class that I work with and also the very nice ladies who teach in childcare. Thank you, you make my work day’s better ones.

Lucas Cooper would like to thank Aaron Nicol for the management of the refurbishment of student services. Top lad!

Carole Gallagher would like to thank all of the Hair and Beauty team at Wisbech and King’s Lynn for their tenacity in chasing students to attend and progress in maths and English. I know it’s a never-ending job but hopefully one that will pay off in the long run.

Sophia Warner

Thank you to my fabulous colleague Ellen Gooding for all her support and keeping me sane. Also a big welcome to the HE team to Jola CobbPernak. Many thanks Lou Emery

I would like to praise Gavin Reynolds in CIS for his incredibly calm, patient and friendly manner when dealing with the issues that we raise. He is always extremely helpful in solving our problems.

I would like to thank Laura Chambers for all the help she has provided since I have been attending the Wisbech campus, from finding me a key to printing hand-outs and always with a smile know matter what I have asked her. This has made my teaching time at Wisbech both enjoyable and relaxing having to travel there from King’s Lynn. This allows me to focus on the learner experience without any added pressure. Laura a “BIG THANK YOU”. Paul Seaman

A big thank you to all the staff that made the Ofsted Prevent visit a success. Mark Reavell
