Welcome Welcome to the College of West Anglia (CWA), one of the largest and most successful education and training providers in the Eastern region and amongst the top colleges in the country. We have an exceptional track record in developing the skills and talents of our students, which is achieved through a combination of great teaching by a team of highly-trained, industry-experienced staff and excellent facilities designed to prepare students for employment and further study. Across our four campuses - King’s Lynn, Wisbech, Cambridge and our sports campus in King’s Lynn - we offer the widest choice of learning opportunities in the region and are committed to providing the best learning experience possible for the thousands of people who take our courses every year. This guide has been specifically developed for Marham, to build upon our existing longstanding relationship with RAF Marham, and aims to highlight the wide variety of options for families and personnel to study and train locally. You may be a young person about to leave school and deciding on your next step or you may already be in work and looking to re-train or improve your skills. Perhaps you are thinking about doing a degree or HND and want to stay local or maybe you are just looking for a part-time recreational course. Whatever your motivation, I am sure we will have something to offer you. As your local college, we would also welcome the opportunity to develop new courses to meet your specific training needs. Please speak to our CWA Training team who will be happy to discuss your training requirements to find the appropriate fix for you. If you choose to study with us, you’ll be joining one of the most successful colleges in the country, where your achievement and development is the focus of everything we do. We look forward to welcoming you to the college.

16+ students Are you in year 10 or year 11? Although you have to stay in education or training until you are 18, you don’t have to stay at school. Getting the right qualifications could make all the difference and will have a big influence on how successful you are in your future career. CWA has an exceptional track record in developing the skills and talents of our students. We offer great teaching by a team of highly trained, industry-experienced staff in excellent facilities, designed to prepare you for employment and further study. You won’t find a wider range of opportunities; we offer a huge selection of full-time vocational courses and apprenticeships as well as being the largest provider of A-levels in the area. At college, you’ll be treated like an adult, gain independence, explore and broaden your interests, pursue your goals and meet lifelong friends your future starts here!

Why choose CWA?

• Stay close, go far - we have four campuses across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire • Outstanding facilities - including recent investment of £25million+ across our campuses • Excellent success rates - our success rate is 82%, above the national average (2013/14) • The widest choice of subjects - from sport to fashion to plumbing, and much more • Great transport links - regular bus services from Marham ensure we are easy to get to

Traineeships A Traineeship is an education and training programme with work experience that is focused on giving you the skills and experience that employers are looking for, helping you secure an apprenticeship or other employment. Traineeships include work placements for 3 days per week over a period of 18 weeks plus you will attend college on a Thursday to complete your training programme. At the end of the work experience, trainees receive a job interview if a role becomes available or a reference and an exit interview with the company.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are an excellent way to gain new skills, qualifications and workplace experience while getting paid. CWA works with hundreds of employers across Norfolk and Cambridgeshire to support students through apprenticeships in a wide variety of work areas. Many of our apprenticeships are delivered entirely within the workplace, which means college staff will visit you to observe practical work and set assignments, whilst some require that you come into college one day per week.

Lucy Vallerine

Lucy studied an advanced apprenticeship in childcare at Swaffham Pre-School Playgroup. “I was very interested in an apprenticeship because I am more of a hands-on person and find it easier to learn in a practical setting rather than sitting a desk. During my time studying an apprenticeship I became more confident; before working at the playgroup I had no experience of working in a large team, but now I work extremely well with all members of the team.”

Jacob Emerson

Jacob successfully completed his hospitality apprenticeship at Market Bistro in King’s Lynn and has secured a full-time job at Michelin star restaurant Morston Hall. At 14 it was just a dream but now it is becoming reality. “I love learning on the job and the fact the assessor came into my place of work made things much easier. I love working in this industry and have met some fantastic people!” CWA offers apprenticeships in a wide range of areas, including: Business and Administration Catering and Hospitality Childcare Construction (Plastering/Brickwork/Carpentry) Cultural & Heritage Venue Operations Customer Service Electrotechnical Installation Engineering Hairdressing Health & Social Care Horticulture

Information Technology Laboratory & Science Technicians Management Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Painting & Decorating Plumbing Retail Supporting Teaching and Learning Team Leading Warehousing and Storage Youth Work

Pauline Ray

Pauline is studying Access to Science and Nursing and GCSE maths after successfully completing Routes to Learning and GCSE English at CWA. She has been accepted to study BSc (Hons) Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. “I did not study GCSEs when I was younger and had gone through life feeling quite worthless and uneducated. A college leaflet came through the door and I enquired about an evening course. To my amazement most of my classmates were in the same situation as me so the camaraderie between us was very special. Going back to college as a mature student is incredibly different from studying as a teenager and made me realise how enjoyable it is to learn.”

Justin Gray & Lucie Gray

A father and daughter from Downham Market are studying together towards a psychosocial degree at the College of West Anglia. Justin Gray suffered a back injury a year ago preventing him from continuing his job as a warehouse operative. After talking to a careers advisor, he decided to follow his interest in psychology. Justin said “It’s so handy to be able to study a degree on your doorstep.” His daughter Lucie completed her A-levels at Downham Market Academy and had originally planned on attending university in Cambridge. She changed her plans after considering the financial implications of attending a university away from home and the associated accommodation costs. cwatraining@col-westanglia.ac.uk cwa training.indd 7

Personnel The two learning credit schemes available throughout your career in the armed forces are the Standard Learning Credits (SLC) scheme and Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme. In addition to these schemes there are also further grants available when undergoing resettlement.

Standard Learning Credits (SLC) Scheme

• All personnel are eligible for SLC. • This is a refund scheme; payments are made after the completion of learning and you must provide proof of learning. • The allowance is available annually from 1 April to 31 March each year. • You can claim 80% of a course fee up to a maximum of £175 per financial year. • The course/activity must directly benefit the Service (unless it is part of resettlement).

Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) Scheme

• You must elect to join the scheme in the first 12 months after enlisting. To make a claim you must have completed four years’ eligible service. • ELC provides a single payment in three separate financial years towards the cost of a nationally recognised qualification at level 3 or above. • You are expected to pay for a minimum of 20% of the course fee (including VAT). • Unlike SLC, the ELC scheme will not refund you if you pay for your learning in advance. • You can claim ELC up to 10 years after leaving the Armed Forces. Please visit the ELCAS website for further information, including how to apply at enhancedlearningcredits.com - our learning provider number is 1254.

Resettlement

Leaving the Air Force brings about major change in your life. You will be made aware of financial assistance available to you, for example travel warrants, training costs and subsistence allowances (where appropriate). Your first point of contact will be your Resettlement and Educational Co-ordinator (REC). When it comes to training, please contact us to talk through your options. Please note, you are unable to use ELC and SLC funding together. However, service leavers are able to use their resettlement grant together with SLC or ELC if required. There is no need to have more time away from your family - speak to CWA, your local training provider.
