The Columbus Symphony has become one of the most innovative orchestras in America. From our pioneering management relationship with CAPA to our profound musical leadership, the CSO strives daily to better serve our community in every way. We invite you to be a part of this exciting season featuring a lineup of phenomenal talent both on and off the podium as we explore works from the great masters of classical music.
The 2013–14 season opens with a one-night-only special event performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 2, “Resurrection,” featuring the combined talents of the Columbus Symphony, Columbus Symphony Chorus, and two internationally renowned guest vocalists.
Also debuting at that concert will be our new Concertmaster, Jean-Sébastien Roy. A native of Montreal, Jean-Sébastien was awarded two of the greatest distinctions in Canada—the Prix d’Europe and the loan of the 1717 Windsor Weinstein Stradivarius (2006–09). Please join us in extending him a warm welcome to Columbus!
We are equally honored to welcome six exceptional guest conductors this season—Thomas Wilkins, Music Director of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra; Jacques Lacombe, Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra; Michael Stern, Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra; Justin Brown, Music Director Laureate of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and General Music Director of the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Germany; Gregory Vajda, Music Director of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and the Hungarian Radio Orchestra; and the Columbus debut of Anu Tali, Estonian conductor and newly named Music Director of the Sarasota Symphony Orchestra.
In our eight Masterworks performances at the Ohio Theatre and four Masterworks performances at the Southern Theatre, the CSO will feature works from the world’s greatest composers, adding the talents of an exceptional assembly of guest musicians, vocalists, and conductors. The abundant and stunning talents of the world stage are coming to Columbus to perform for you!
We are thrilled to welcome international superstar Lang Lang as he returns to perform for our 2014 CSO Gala celebration. It will be a grand evening indeed!
We will also be collaborating with Opera Columbus to present “Carmen in Concert,” a special performance uniting the talents of the CSO, Columbus Symphony Chorus, Columbus Children’s Choir, and Opera Columbus to bring to life one of the most popular operas of all time.
This season’s Pops Series is one of the best in CSO history, including The Midtown Men, En Vogue, Indigo Girls, and of course, the beloved, annual Holiday Pops. Whatever your musical tastes, our diverse schedule of exceptional artists will fit the bill.
We are honored to serve you in our mutual passion for great music, and on behalf of the Board, management, and musicians of the Columbus Symphony, we thank you for your continued support of our work.

RACHMANINOFF & BRAHMS
Perhaps the most beloved of all piano concertos, Rachmaninoff’s Second overflows with appealing Russian-flavored melodies, heady emotions, and dazzling solo virtuosity. The last of Brahms’ symphonies sums up a magnificent composer’s life with waves of warmth, nostalgia, regret, defiance, and joy.

SUITES & SONGS
Ravel’s composition pays graceful homage to François Couperin and the other composers of eighteenthcentury France. The CSO will also perform two additional movements from the original piano suite, orchestrated by Jean-Marie. Ottorino Respighi’s sparkling suite portrays the delightful paintings of Italian master Sandro Botticelli. You will also enjoy Peter Lieberson’s gorgeous musical love letters derived from the sonnets of Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

BEETHOVEN’S FIFTH
Arguably the best-known opening theme in all of classical music, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony leads you on a thrilling, uplifting, emotional journey. Ilya Gringolts, whom the Financial Times has praised as “one of the most inspirational violinists today,” performs Englishman Sir Edward Elgar’s expansive, thoroughly romantic violin concerto. Also on the bill is the world premiere of Invictus by distinguished composer and OSU graduate, Stephen Montague.

RAVEL & BRUCKNER
In this fascinating concerto written as a gift to pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in WWI, Ravel ingeniously wrote a one-handed piano part that sounds like it is being played by two hands and also demonstrates his love of jazz. Bruckner’s final, unfinished symphony is a stirring quest for emotional fulfillment, richly scored and filled with strong passions.

ROMANTIC PASSIONS
Czech master Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is not only the greatest work of its kind, but a masterpiece in its own right. Composed at the close of his three-year period in America, this large scale work aches with homesickness for his native Bohemia. The Symphony in D minor of César Franck also wears its heart on its sleeve, progressing from initial uncertainty to a triumphant conclusion. Grieg’s delectable Peer Gynt Suite adds a splash of Norwegian sunshine to the program.

MOZART & SCHUMANN
Praised as a “remarkable conductor” with “exceptional gifts,” British conductor Justin Brown demonstrates his impressive versatility by serving as both conductor and soloist for Mozart’s elegant and final piano concerto. He then picks up the baton to lead Schumann’s exciting and soulful Symphony No. 2.
Masterworks 9
TCHAIKOVSKY & SIBELIUS
In the hands of Guy Braunstein, the first concertmaster of the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky’s glorious Violin Concerto sparkles, caresses, and thunders as never before. Symphony No. 2 by the Finnish master Jean Sibelius is an epic piece, filled with color, drama, and a sense of forward momentum that will sweep you along. The quiet and moving work of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt pays sincere tribute to Benjamin Britten, one of the twentieth century’s most illustrious composers.
Masterworks 10
MOZART & STRAUSS
On this special Easter-season program, you’ll hear how two great composers concluded their careers and bid farewell to earthly life. In the Requiem that 35-year-old Mozart left unfinished, he offered a compelling mixture of beauty, anguish, majesty, and drama. At 84, Richard Strauss looked back over a long, brilliant career in the achingly nostalgic Four Last Songs.

CONCERTO FESTIVAL
Three engaging concertos — two for piano and one for chamber orchestra — demonstrate the remarkable diversity of pieces with that name. The Bach piano concerto is a serious and substantial piece, while the Shostakovich is anything but. It’s a high-spirited romp featuring a major part for solo trumpet. Stravinsky’s work, inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, is a choice example of the athletic, lean-textured school of NeoClassicism.
