New and Continuing Members
Welcome to the 60th season of the Columbus Symphony Chorus!
New Member Fees and Deposit
All new members are required to pay a one-time music deposit and membership fee. A $20 check (made out to Columbus Symphony Chorus)—which includes a $5 membership fee and a $15 music deposit—can be paid to the chorus treasurer. Cash is also accepted.
Chorus Directory
The chorus publishes an internal pictorial directory, for use by the chorus board and the members of the chorus. Please review your information and send any changes or updates to either the new member coordinator or one of the attendance chairs.
Schedule
The chorus rehearses every Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:30 pm in Rehearsal Room 1 of the Ohio Theater Pavilion, 55 East State Street. The date of the beginning and ending of each year’s rehearsal schedule depends on the repertoire of the particular season.
Concert Week
A typical concert week usually follows the pattern of rehearsals and concerts below:
• Tuesday evening: chorus and piano with the conductor (Room 1)
• Wednesday & Thursday evenings: chorus and orchestra with conductor (on stage)
• Friday & Saturday evenings (sometimes also Saturday or Sunday matinées): concerts
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. If you are unable to attend a regular rehearsal, please contact the attendance coordinator. Do not call or email the chorus director. During concert week if you have an illness, unexpected emergency, or are unable to attend a dress rehearsal
or concert, please contact both the chorus director and the attendance coordinator.
Chairs
The chorus rents Room 1 for rehearsals, however, the room is used by a variety of other groups throughout the week. We are responsible for setting up, and putting away, all of the chairs that we use at each rehearsal.
If you are able to help set up chairs before rehearsal, please contact the chairs coordinator.
Music
Music will be provided for all of the rehearsals and performances throughout the year. You are not required to purchase your own music, however, if you own your own copy (in the same edition by the same publisher) feel free to use it.
If you forget to bring your music to rehearsal, please contact the chorus librarian to see if there are temporary copies available. Please return temporary copies at the end of the rehearsal.
Please report lost or damaged music to the chorus librarian as soon as possible to obtain a replacement copy. You will be charged a replacement fee (equal to the cost of purchasing the new copy, plus any shipping).
You are responsible for returning all music to the librarian at the conclusion of each concert. A manila envelope with your name will be provided when the music is issued to you. Please save this envelope for returning your music at the end of the concert.
Folders
All members of the chorus should have a standard black chorus folder in good condition. If you need a folder, they can be purchased at Stanton’s Sheet Music (please indicate that you sing with the Columbus Symphony Chorus), or occasionally through the chorus. Please contact the new members coordinator or the board chair for more information.
Pencils
Please bring a pencil and eraser to all rehearsals. If you need to borrow a pencil from the chorus, please return it at the end of rehearsal. Please do not use ink to mark in copies owned by the chorus.
Tickets
Generally, for the concerts that the chorus is participating in, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra offers chorus members two complimentary tickets, and the option to purchase additional tickets at a 15% discount. Ticket order forms are distributed to the chorus at rehearsal several weeks prior to each concert.
Attire
The attire of the chorus is designed to match the orchestra with whom we are performing, and will be different for different occasions. In addition to following the prescribed attire, please be respectful of other members of the chorus and do not wear perfumes, colognes, or any scented lotions or hairspray.
Women’s Attire. Standard attire for the concert season is a black dress with a pearl necklace and earrings, to be purchased through the chorus. For Holiday Pops, women will wear a red scarf instead of pearls, and if there are summer performances, women will wear their own black slacks with a standard black blouse, to be ordered through the chorus. The approximate ensemble cost is $90, payable by cash or check (made out to Columbus Symphony Chorus). Please contact the women’s attire coordinator to place all orders. Dresses take approximately 3 to 4 weeks for delivery and alterations.
Men’s Attire. Several outfits are required for a variety of occasions throughout the year. Some years not all outfits are required, so make sure to check whether they are required before purchasing attire. You will need to purchase the following items from a menswear store, but please contact the men’s attire coordinator before you purchase to make sure your items match the rest of the chorus.
• Standard Evening Concert Attire: Black tails coat, black tuxedo pants, white wing collar tuxedo shirt, white pique vest, white pique bow tie, black studs/cuff links.
• Standard Matinée Attire: Black suit (not tuxedo), black or dark long tie.
• Holiday Pops Attire: Black tails coat, black tuxedo pants, white wing collar tuxedo shirt, red vest, red bow tie, black studs/cuff links.
• Summer Attire: Black dress shirt, black slacks or suit pants.
