WELCOME TO LET THERE BE ART AND BLOOM! This annual gathering of artists and now gardeners celebrates fabulous art from across the East Coast, throughout the South, and stretching across to Europe, and with the addition of the botanical tent it now demonstrates our community’s love of the outdoors and our Bradley Olmsted Garden. We welcome this special opportunity to showcase the continued importance that the Columbus Museum plays in the cultural and educational life of our community.

Since March 1953 the Museum has championed the artists of the Southeast, and this “fun-raiser” for the Museum, now in its third year, continues this fine tradition. We thank all participants for their involvement and for sharing their artwork with our audience. We are excited by the addition of the botanical tent and the Master Gardeners for the expertise they bring to our event. To this end, we are deeply indebted to our co-chairs Charlotte Hare and Dori Jones who have provided exemplary leadership at every phase of planning to ensure the success of this event; their talented and committed volunteer committees have also done their jobs unbelievable well.

STEPHEN WICKS

BARBARA W. & BERNARD E. BERNSTEIN CURATOR, KNOXVILLE MUSEUM OF ART Stephen Wicks has guided the Knoxville Museum of Art’s curatorial department for 18 years. During that time he managed the Museum’s thriving exhibitions program and guided the development of its collections of East Tennessee-related art and international contemporary art. He has organized exhibitions including Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee, the first ongoing display devoted to East Tennessee’s art history; Awakening the Spirits, the first-ever retrospective of the self-taught African American artist Bessie Harvey; and Forest of Visions, which examined ecologically-inspired works by more than a dozen contemporary artists. During his tenure as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Columbus Museum, Columbus, Georgia (2003-2007), Wicks organized New Directions in American Drawing, a survey of contemporary drawing. He is active as a guest curator, juror, lecturer, and writer. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Tennessee, his Master of Arts in Art History & Museum Studies from Case Western Reserve University, and was awarded backto-back Cleveland Museum of Art Fellowships.

By taking inspiration from the beauty of our world and mixing it with the contents of her imagination, Gillian Affolter strives to make simple, straightforward objects that help create comfort and beauty for people’s surroundings. She creates and makes each item from a variety of materials and processes ranging from high-fire porcelain to hand processed ‘red Georgia’ brick clay and a bit of everything in-between. She currently lives and works in Georgia.

PERRY AUSTIN, Goodwater, Alabama

A passion for art was a family affair for Perry Austin and his three brothers, who grew up painting together and cultivating a shared love of art. Following graduation from Auburn University in 1971, Austin spent several years working as a technical illustrator with the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and the space program in Anaheim, California. During this time, several galleries began showing his work and in 1998 his work was published in Southwest Art. The same year the Comer Museum of Art named him Alabama’s top artist, at which point he dedicated himself full time to art. Austin says his work as an illustrator enabled him to hone his technical skills while he developed his understanding of composition and color. He lives in the Appalachian foothills of central Alabama with his wife, Carol, and continues to paint with his brothers.

NED BERRY, Cataula, Georgia

Columbus native Ned Berry has never regretted the day he begged a local potter to give him a lump of clay and let him sit down at her wheel. That was in 1990 and Berry has been a prolific master of pottery ever since. His works are a unique blend of wheel-thrown and hand-built elements from glazed clay. He was inspired by his great-grandfather George Berry, who was a well-known potter, and his ancestor Edward Hicks, a well-known early American painter.

Berry’s pottery pieces are in the collections of two U.S. Presidents as well as distinguished collections across the United States and abroad. He has exhibited widely in the South as well as New York.

JANICE BIGGERS, Columbus, Georgia

An Impressionist-style painter, Columbus resident Janice Biggers thrives off the inspiration she finds in flowers, landscapes, and seascapes. Along with her long career in mixed-media painting, Biggers is also a committed preservationist as well as an active member of the local arts community. She has attended numerous workshops conducted by artists of note, and strives for an Impressionistic style which reflects a calmer world.

Dawn Black lives and works in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and has been exhibiting her work since 1997. She received her Fine Arts degree in painting from Louisiana State University School of Art, Baton Rouge in 1997. In 2001, she received her MFA in painting and sculpture from the University of Iowa School of Art and History, Iowa City, Iowa. JUNE ELIZABETH BLACKSTOCK, Parrott, Georgia

Though she has exhibited her works several times in New York City, including two shows at the prestigious National Arts Clubs, artist June Elizabeth Blackstock has called Parrott, Georgia home for the past twenty-eight years. Blackstock has a national base of clients but she lives and works in the picturesque antebellum hamlet tucked away just off the road from Columbus to Albany, the hometown of her husband, fellow artist France Pierce. Blackstock began to concentrate on portraiture in her late 20’s. She is a third generation student of the Ashcan School, having been mentored by Dawson, Georgia artists Robert Henri and George Luks. TARLETON BLACKWELL, Manning, South Carolina

Black Purple House

A native of Manning, South Carolina, Tarleton Blackwell is often cited as being one of the preeminent members of a group of younger African American contemporary artists whose work plays a critical role in the current influx of this genre into the mainstream. He has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including the 1994 Southern Arts Federation/ National Endowment for the Arts Regional Fellowship in Painting. Blackwell has been named an “Outstanding Young Man of America” and an “Outstanding Professional South Carolinian in the Field of Art”. In 2004, Blackwell was invited to receptions at The White House at the request of Mrs. Laura Bush and Mrs. Colin Powell in recognition of his participation with the Art in Embassies Program. BUCKY BOWLES, Fortson, Georgia

Bucky is a full time artist who grew up camping, hunting, and fishing in southwest Georgia. As the son of a photographer and avid fisherman he was exposed to the beauty of nature and the challenges of the sporting life as a young boy. Bucky’s paintings reflect his continuing love and appreciation for nature and outdoor life. Although Sporting Art, primarily bird hunting and fly-fishing, is his passion he paints oils and watercolors of other subject matter ranging from marsh and low country landscapes to dogs and waterscapes. NANCY BRADFORD, Scottsboro, Alabama

Nancy Bradford’s paintings are known for their luminous color and lambent, flickering light.

While she paints predominately in oil, she is versatile and may employ a brilliant wash of watercolor or a bright dancing pastel line. Bradford’s use of animated, dynamic color makes each motif come alive. She has studied with many gifted teachers here and abroad and has painted professionally for more than ten years. SARA BRADLEY, Columbus, Georgia

A Columbus, Georgia, native, Sara Bradley has an MFA from SCAD and a four-year certificate in painting from the Art Students League of New York. She is interested in the relationship of time and space as changes occur in the landscape over an extended period.

Sara assembles images with multiple layers of collaged paper, tape, and acrylic paint. The act of drawing and photographing, composing and re-drawing, tearing and repositioning, and reworking passages reflect the transformation occurring with the construction/ deconstruction process. Sara has exhibited her work in several group shows throughout the Southeast, New York City, and Melbourne, Australia. Her paintings can be found in multiple national and international collections.

ROGER DALE BROWN, Franklin, Tennessee

Back in Time

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Roger Dale Brown now lives in Franklin, Tennessee. Rogers’s initial studies in oil painting followed the Impressionist technique. He studied with nationally recognized artist Ever Raymond Kinstler, landscape artist Scott Christensen, and mentored with Dawn Whitelaw. Roger believes that studying and painting from life is essential to being a good artist and spends hours painting on location to enhance his ability to see the nuances of a scene, a day, or an object. Traveling the country seeking out history, culture, and landscapes is important for Roger and his fiancé, artist Beverly Ford Evans. His paintings have been displayed in galleries throughout the United States and have won many awards. Roger has been published by Plein Air Magazine, International Artist Magazine, American Artist Magazine and American Art Collectore Magazine. WENDY MONTGOMERY BUTLER, Social Circle, Georgia

Wendy is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, where she began horseback riding and fox hunting at the age of eight. She developed her love for art and animals very early while growing up in an artistic family with an older sister as a riding instructor. Wendy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in ceramics, and jewelry fabrication. After several years away from horses and art, she renewed her passion for both and married a professional fox hunter.

Shortly after that she began to paint from the inspiration of their horses, fox hounds, and many Jack Russell terriers. She and her husband live in the heart of a quail plantation near Boston, Georgia. Wendy’s animal portraits and wildlife paintings are done in watercolor, acrylics, and pencil. SUSIE CALLAHAN, Sullivan’s Isle, South Carolina

Painting and drawing has been a passion of Susie Callahan’s since childhood. She studied art in college and has participated in countless workshops with nationally acclaimed artists. She has been painting regularly with the Sullivan’s Island Plein Air Painters since their inception in 1998 with a two year break when she attended graduate school to become a clinical counselor.

She enjoys combining her creative skills in both her painting and her clinical work as a counselor. “Both endeavors require me to work with translating emotion and energy; either through a connection with patients or onto a canvas with color and paint. SUSANNE CARMACK, Okatie, South Carolina

Susanne Carmack is a mixed media painter and printmaker whose texture and mark making is a central component of her paintings and prints. Carmack believes that the empty space in her work is as important as the space enlivened with marks. In a test of ideas and form, Susanne moves back and forth between printmaking and painting. Her art is in public and private spaces nationwide, including many corporate collections. She has exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery as well as the Phillips Collection, and she has also been featured in New American Paintings magazine twice. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in art history from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree in painting from the University of Maryland where she studied with, and was the teaching assistant for, the late sculptor and painter Anne Truitt. Susanne is represented in Georgia by Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta.

CAROLYN CARR, Atlanta, Georgia

An Atlanta native, Carolyn Carr is known for her compelling abstract paintings of interwoven curvilinear lines that are derived from captured graffiti signatures. Her interest in text and narrative has been an ongoing and vital component to her work that has been explored through her titles and interests in film and literature. These culturally significant references are derived from a wide range of sources spanning historical periods, platforms, and various means of distribution. Carolyn received her BFA from the Atlanta College of Art, with a focus on Photography. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries including Gavlak (New York, Palm Beach), Artists Space (New York), 10 Chancery Lane (Hong Kong), National Museum of Women (Washington DC), the Contemporary, David Heath and Fay Gold (Atlanta). Carolyn’s work has been seen in well-known publications such as House Beautiful and Architectural Digest.

MICHAEL CHANDLER, New York, New York

Born in Denver, Colorado, Michael Chandler was a student of Stan Brakhage at the University of Colorado in Boulder during the late 60’s and attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa. He began showing his paintings in 1985 at the galleries of Salvatore Ala in New York and Milan. Chandler has been a gardener in the Hollywood Hills, done mining assessment for the Anaconda Company, worked on Christo’s Rifle Valley Curtain project, painted baseball dolls for the Pittsburg Pirates and Cincinnati Reds, was a surveyor for Contact Logging in Philipsburg, Montana, painted walls at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, worked on the production of Walter Hill’s movie The Warriors, painted cartoon cells for Animalympics, did installations at the Mudd Club and Club 57 with Mary-Ann Monforton and worked as an assistant to Dan Flavin through the Dia Art Foundation. michaelchandler.info/michaelchandler.info/M_Chandler.html

As a fine art major at Georgia State University, Marc Chatov studied drawing under the late James Sitton, who was acclaimed for his drawing and anatomy instruction. Marc begins his work by drawing with paint and prefers to paint alla prima because it keeps a spontaneous approach to his subject. Chatov is a member of The Salmagundi Club in New York, Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, and is an Advisory Board Member with the Portrait Society of Atlanta. WIN CRANNELL, Dahlonega, Georgia

Win Crannell, 3rd place winner in the 2011 Let There Be Art show and sale, held various positions before retiring as a professor emeritus from North Georgia College and State University. Throughout his teaching career, he devoted time to his own artistic interests, which he has continued into his retirement. His work has followed many directions with a strong early influence from Jackson Pollock and the Abstract Expressionist. His early work was large non-objective paintings, but as years have passed and his influences have varied, he has become interested in the landscapes of rural Georgia. The beauty and intrigue of trees have lately been a major focus of his work, some drawings take up to five hundred hours to complete. Other subjects that Win has drawn over the years include carousels, barns, old stores, rivers, and mountain scenes. The daughter of a Naval Officer, Geri Davis was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, and traveled extensively throughout South, Central, and North America. She is a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor Degree in Applied Arts. She also holds a Master of Science Degree in Counseling and Human Development. This unique educational combination has made it possible for her to utilize art in a therapeutic and creative manner for her students. MIKKI DILLON, Lilburn, Georgia

Previously an art major at Ohio State University who also studied print-making at Columbus College, Dillon was an Army wife until her husband’s retirement, when she resumed her art career, working in stained glass, watercolor, and pastel. She has studied with Frank Webb, Katherine Chang Liu, Maxine Masterfield, Albert Handell, Carole Katchen, Sally Strand, Alan Flattman, Wolf Kahn, and many others. Currently working primarily in pastel, Mikki has won numerous national awards and has achieved signature status in seven national pastel societies.

She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, Knickerbocker Artists of America, the National Association of Women Artists, Inc., and is a full member of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club (NY). Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Garner speculates that growing up in a desert environment made her appreciate the trees which now fill her canvasses. She earned a BFA from Arizona State University and has been painting professionally since 1989. Her real focus is on capturing the essence of light. Born and brought up in the Philippines, Suzita has lived around the globe with time spent in Europe, the Far East, and the United States. Ann Getsinger grew up in Watertown, Connecticut, the youngest of five, in a creative, rural environment. Born in 1927, Bill Heisig has been a pro baseball player, a State Trooper, a Realtor, and an antiques dealer. He has studied with The Harold Stevenson Atelier and has been painting for 45 years. Bill has exhibited at Guild Hall on Easthampton, Anderson Gallery in Locust Valley, and recently at Ariel Framing in Locust Valley. He enjoys depicting structures of historical note such as windmills, lighthouses, ships, and bridges.

Born in Amityville, New York, Nancy Hoerter grew up in Birmingham, Alabama.Working in oils, Nancy combines the play of light with the lushness of flowers and fruit in her still-life paintings. From a very early age, Mary Hoffman has loved the creative process and grew up knowing she would one day be a professional painter. She earned a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. Born and raised in rural North Carolina, Mark Kelvin Horton graduated from East Carolina University School of Art. Mark became particularly fascinated with the works of George Inness, Herman Herzog, Frederick Church, and the Tonalist photographer, Edward Steichen. The Gallery Director for the Department of Art at Columbus State University, Hannah Israel received her Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Illinois UrbanaChampagne. Prior to moving to Columbus, she worked at The International Studio and Curatorial Program and James Cohan Gallery in New York City. Hannah has curated several group exhibitions and has exhibited her own work nationally and internationally.

Raised in New Jersey, Barbara Courtney Jaenicke loved to draw and paint as a child and decided at an early age to pursue a career in art in one form or another. She graduated with a BA in Art and Advertising Design from The College of New Jersey, attended the School of Visual Arts, New York, New York, and has studied with widely known artists including Marc Hanson, Bill Davidson, Duane Wakeham, Margaret Dyer, Kim Lordier, Greg Biolchini, Albert Handell, and Susan Ogilvie. JANE FARRIMOND KELTNER, Memphis, Tennessee

Jane Keltner has immersed herself in the arts since her youth in Memphis, Tennessee. Her background performing in musical theater and opera led to a scholarship and a BA from Rollins College. Later she studied opera in Rome, Italy, where her interest in the visual arts began to take hold. She uses the music, which fills her studio to inform her paintings by transferring the feeling in the music onto the canvas. She is a self-taught artist and many individualized techniques have been born by Jane to enhance the uniqueness of each canvas.

The final product reflects her love of color. She began her journey with the brush, but now relies mostly on the pallet knife in order to achieve multiple layers on to the canvas and add richness to her paintings. Professor Elizabeth Roberts McFalls, a member of the Columbus State University faculty since 2007, is an Associate Professor of Art. She received her MFA from The Cranbrook Academy of Art. Since arriving at CSU Professor McFalls has been included in more than twenty exhibitions, given three artist lectures, and completed an Artist Residency at the Osage Artist Community. Altogether, she has had a total of sixty-four exhibits, spanning several bodies of work, three of which were solo exhibits. Professor McFalls’ uses historical photographs that have stereotypically been used to express ideas of family, community, and a dedication to a way of life that has often resulted in heartbreak. Her research focuses on the rural southeast as a departure point for discussing issues of mortality, sacrifice, and beauty, in the mediums of drawing and lithography.

ANGELA TROTTA THOMAS, Charleston, South Carolina

Since 1991, Angela has been the premier toy train artist in America and a one of the few women painters of classic automobile fine art. She is the only artist ever to be licensed by famed toy train manufacturer Lionel Trains Inc./Lionel LLC and has held that honor for many years.

Her toy train art has been exhibited in the Smithsonian and Everhart museums. Her Rockwell like paintings have earned her the title of “The Train lady”. In addition to toy trains, Angela has also featured classic and antique automobiles in her magnificent watercolor paintings. She has been selected four times as the feature artist of the “Concous d’ Elegance of the Eastern United States,” the first woman to receive this honor. Angela embarked in a new direction and with new a medium, creating plein air oil paintings. She attended many world class workshops and studied extensively the work of the plein air masters.

Christophe von Hohenberg is a portrait and lifestyle photographer whose talent was discovered by American Vogue. Throughout his career photographing celebrities, he has worked with magazines including American Vogue, Interview, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, New York Times Magazine, French Vogue, and others. Christopher has established his place in the art world, as a portrait photographer, with his unique gift for capturing the inner essence of individuals in distinguished and elegant ways. His portraits have been displayed at The Grey Art Gallery in New York, Art and Interior in Berlin, and Valentina Moncada in Rome. In addition, Christopher is actively engaged in shooting advertising campaigns for major companies. His book on Andy Warhol was published in 2006. Christopher studied art, philosophy, and history in Germany, France, and Spain and graduated from Schiller University in Paris. Karen Weihs is a native of Charleston, South Carolina, with a BFA from the University of Georgia. ORION WERTZ, Columbus, Georgia

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Orion Wertz is now Associate Professor of Fine Art in Painting at Columbus State University. He studied painting at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received his Bachelor’s degree. He went on to study at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he received his Master’s degree and taught painting and drawing. In spite of his interest in the Chicago art scene, Orion moved to New York City where he spent two years working for galleries. He has exhibited paintings, drawings, and installations in a variety of venues and has produced several short graphic novels.

Now a long time resident of Atlanta, Kathy grew up in New Jersey. She studied art at the University of Colorado and went on to earn her BFA at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

Kathy’s focus on art got serious when she started painting with Marc Chatov in Atlanta. She also studied with Jim Schell, Carolyn Anderson, and Alice Williams. Influences are obvious in her use of color and the energy in her work. Kathy has participated in numerous group and juried shows including American Women Artists in 2009 and 2011. Kathy has received many honors from the Portrait Society of Atlanta including first place in 2007 and 2012, and members choice. Kathy’s passion is painting figures and portraits. She also enjoys painting animals and landscapes. Her work is represented at the Allison Sprock Fine Art Gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

George Woodruff’s passion for art began over forty years ago and was instilled in him by his mother, Mrs. Betty Jinks Woodruff. His portfolio boasts with the wide range of projects, including free hand sketching, furniture and lamp crafting, and sculpting. George’s love of the outdoors inspired one of his artisan specialties; coffee tables topped with quail feathers, turtle shell pieces, deer antlers, or other objects pressed and seemingly floating between multiple layers of glass. All of his furniture items can be customized and each piece is individually handcrafted. George recently gifted a thirty year old sculpture crafted from a 100 year old piece of red oak to Columbus State University. The sculpture is currently displayed at the CSU Yancey Center lobby.

Bruno Zupan was born in Slovenia in 1939. He graduated from the Art lnstitute in Zagreb and decided at the age of 23 to leave home and continue his education in Paris. In 1964, he left Paris for New York, where he began a series of one-man exhibitions of his work in American museums and galleries. He has since achieved wide exposure and critical acclaim on two continents culminating in several singular honors. In 1976, Zupan was awarded life member ship in the Society of French Artists; in 1981 and 1991, he received special commissions to create first day covers for the World Federations of United Nations Associations. ROTHSCHILD DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER Elizabeth Johns, Professor Emerita of Art History, University of Pennsylvania | FREE May 16, 2013| 6:15 p.m. | FREE To accompany the Museum’s current exhibition, Winslow Homer in America, Dr. Johns will provide an illustrated lecture on Homer’s life, the culture of his era as seen in his wood engravings, and his development as an artist. Dr. Johns has taught courses on all eras of American art and written more than 100 articles and book reviews, including Winslow Homer: The Nature of Observation (California, 2002), an analysis of Homer’s images of the Civil War in the context of his other work and his own northern commitments. Most recently, at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Dr. Johns curated the exhibition Circuit of the Summer Hills: Mourning the Losses of the Civil War (January 2010 to February 2011), which included paintings and prints by both Union and Confederate veterans, as well as wood engravings of the war’s effect on families by Winslow Homer from Harper’s Weekly.

Fantastic Fridays bring a variety of musicians, storytellers, dancers, and puppeteers to the Columbus Museum this summer! Doors will open at 10 a.m. and performances begin at 10:30 a.m. each Friday in the Patrick Theater. Following each performance, create an art project in the Galleria, go on a Museum scavenger hunt, and get a temporary tattoo! Chicken George Club Members will have VIP activities on select Fantastic Fridays!

Each camp cost $100 for Museum members and $120 for Non-members. Classes are full-days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and campers must bring their own lunch. Chicken George Club members will receive a FREE gift with their camp registration!

JULY 8-12 | Exploring Modern Art Campers will explore the Museum’s permanent collection and the Bradley Olmsted Garden while creating their own work using a variety of media from pastels, paints, crayons, to natural objects.

AGES 8-10 JUNE 17-21 | Passionate about Painting From still life, to portraits, to landscapes, campers will leave with a variety of new skills and techniques as they explore the Museum’s collection and apply their new skills to create unique artwork.

JULY 15-19 | Sensational Sculpture Campers will learn how to create amazing works of art from media like clay and Papier-mâché, and less traditional mediums like cardboard, paper, and even found objects!

AGES 11-13 JUNE 24-28 | Mad About Modern Art Campers will study the fascinating techniques used by famous Modern artists and learn to create their own modern masterpieces!
