Coffman students win national writing awards

Two Coffman students won national awards for work on the school’s news magazine, The Perspective. Senior Kelsey Payne won a first-place
feature writing award and sophomore Abbey Willette won first place in the news writing category from Quill and Scroll. The contest organized by the international honorary society for high school journalists drew more than 2,400 entries in 14 divisions, information from the district said. Payne won an award for her story, “From the Heart,” which focused on a Coffman student who suffered multiple heart attacks. Willette’s award-winning news story, “Like too Much?” covered student reliance on social media.
Bachwich headed to History Bee finals
Sells Middle School eighth-grader Sam Bachwich qualified for the June 1 National History Bee finals in Atlanta, Ga. Bachwich registered for the test on his own and took an exam to qualify for the regional competition in Michigan. At the regional contest, he faced other students in a buzzer-style competition and placed in the top ten to earn a spot at finals. The national contest tests student knowledge of history with head-to-head competition.
