GVS launches second director search By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers The German Village Society’s board of trustees has launched another search for a director. The board has decided to reopen the process after a previous national search, which began last November, was unsuccessful, said Roy Bieber, treasurer

of the GVS and co-chair of the search committee. “I think what we’re trying to avoid this time around is taking too long,” Bieber said. The job officially will be posted Thursday, June 16, on germanvillage.com. Bieber would not divulge the salary range for the position. The society received around 60 re-

sumés last time and interviewed a handful of candidates. However, the GVS didn’t act quickly enough to hire someone for the position, Bieber said. He said it will be more efficient to renew the search rather than find candidates from the existing pool. Also, the society hopes to select someone from the local job market. Bieber said the society doesn’t have the money

to bring people into town for interviews or relocate them for the job. The last person to hold the position, then called “executive director,” was Erin O’Donnell, who resigned in 2009. Russ Arledge, who had been office coordinator for the society for a year-anda-half, was named programs and operations manager in March. He handles dayto-day duties at the Meeting Haus.

The new person will complement Arledge’s responsibilities, said Mary Yarbrough, who also co-chairs the search committee. Yarbrough, wife of GVS board vice president Mike Yarbrough, said the society is seeking a candidate with leadership qualifications, management exSee SEARCH, page A2

When David and Cindy Holloway bought their German Village house three years ago, they had to finish an incomplete renovation project. Not that they’re complaining. David Holloway is a landscape designer and his wife has a background in interior and exterior design. “It had all the great bones; it just needed the finishing touches,” he said of the house at 764 S. Sixth St. The home is one of 13 properties on the 52nd German Village Haus und Garten Tour, slated for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 26. Tickets, $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour, are still available at germanvillage.com and the Meeting Haus, 588 S. Third St. The Holloways’ house, built in the 1890s, has all the modern accentuations one might expect in German Village. It has undergone three additions. The most recent, which the Holloways had installed, is a 216-square-foot family room off the kitchen. The space offers a fireplace embellished with mosaic tiles. Another fireplace is in the kitchen dining area. The master bedroom is located on the upper level, which includes a balcony that overlooks the kitchen and dining area. The first story has light hardwood floors accented with area rugs and many creative appointments, including David Holloway’s original paintings. The kitchen has a mix of dark and light cabinetry, a large island and granite countertops. The backyard features brick pavers and a colorful mixture of annuals and perennials, as well as an assortment of shrubbery, vegetables and herbs. See TOUR page A2

The Columbus Recreation and Parks Commission changed the rules for naming and renaming public facilities and parks in the city. The commission voted 7-0 June 8 on the changes, meant to preserve continuity of city-owned properties. Two commission members were absent for the vote. “It really more clearly defines the criteria that we look at” in the naming process, said Terri Leist, assistant director of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. She said the revisions were made after a group of German Village residents sought to change the name of Huntington Garden in Schiller Park. See NAMING RIGHTS, page A3

Fred and Howard Award

Society honors WOSU-TV for local documentary By GARY SEMAN JR. ThisWeek Community Newspapers WOSU-TV was honored last week for its documentary series that included a stop in German Village. The German Village Society bestowed the local station with the Fred and Howard Award, presented at a breakfast June 9 at Caterina Ltd. The award is given to those who best pro-

mote the village to a local and international audience. “We are, as a station and as producers, just thrilled,” said executive producer Cindy Gaillard.”We had such great access to the people in German Village. They welcomed us with open arms. We couldn’t have done such a good job without their enthusiasm.” “Columbus Neighborhoods: German Village” was one in a series of six doc-

umentaries, three of which have not yet aired. The German Village installment aired in October. It told the story of the German settlers and the early architecture and lifestyles of the people who lived in the village. The documentary also chronicled modern history and the people who made the village what it is today. “It was one of those stories that was

so good, just one of those basic transformational stories: A down-and-out neighborhood that just turned out to be this beautiful jewel,” Gaillard said. “You can’t go wrong with that kind of story.” Gaillard, online producer Drew Bracken and editors Bill Bullock and Diana Bergemann were presented with the award.

As a little girl, Mary McClendon would test her pipes at every opportunity. “Any choir I could get in at church or school, I was there,” she said. She took an instant liking to gospel and jazz vocalists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson. “Music’s always been there for me, something I could always depend on,” she said.
