It’s a game changer Late last fall, when the Chamber board was deciding on initiatives for 2014 and the best and most impactful ways to move forward, then board member, Scott Preston suggested a program loosely based off of reality tv’s “Restaurant Rescue.” We loved the idea and immediately started to gather the information on what such an undertaking would entail. It’s a lot. A whole lot. But, in our minds, the undertaking is worth the nitty-gritty details, projects and asks. Then, we had to identify a business who could use a boost. We thought it might be a tougher sell, until we approached Marijon Lococo, owner of the French Loaf Bakery. We asked complete transparency of her business practices and offered local expert help to offer services, products, time, talents. Lococo graciously, and dare I say, eagerly, accepted the challenge. When presented to our membership base as an opportunity to step forward and help another local business, again, we had members lining up. These members are offering their time, products, services, etc. free of charge. And, for the record, the Chamber has a zero budget for this and will make no money from it. Our goal is to demonstrate the resources we have when a member business is in need, and to be seen as a valuable community resource. Here’s what we have so far: Adept Marketing will build a new website; 2Shea Creative is doing design, logo and branding work; Infintech has analyzed the credit card processing currently in place; Shelby

The third time’s a charm Recently, you should have received the 2014/15 Grandview Community Directory. It’s the third time we’ve produced a full-size, full-color community directory as an at-your-fingertips resource for all things Grandview, Marble Cliff and 5xNW areas. The first two editions were recognized nationally as the “Best Business Publication” for a community of our size. Impressive; even if we do say so ourselves! The Grandview HOP: Season 9 It’s hard to believe that this event has been around for nine years. It’s gone through many changes during it’s near decade existence; ups and downs, shortened season, various vendors and many volunteer organizers. Now, run by Destination Grandview, the HOP has solid footing and has given the event a nice shot in the arm. “We shortened the HOP season two years ago in an effort to have quality versus quantity of events,” stated Jessica Khouzam Walli, Executive Director of Destination Grandview. “This year, due to consumer and vendor requests, we’ve extended the event another month.” Another push is to extend the physical length of the event along Grandview and First Avenues. In the past, the majority of the crowd centered around the Second Avenue/Bank Block area where the largest band sets up and there’s a concentration of restaurants and boutique shopping. The plan is to have vendors on First Avenue in front of Sage Sisters, a food truck area on both sides of Grandview Avenue in front of Grandview Dental and Myers Real Estate offices. Additional art and craft vendors as well as entertainment options are being added by the day. “We want to have something to look at, entertain you, engage you, and draw you in from First to Fifth Avenues.” Walli added that a very exciting addition this year is a partnership with Rife’s Market which will offer an evening Farmer’s Market on their property dur-

Walgreens has opened up a portion of their parking lot on the corner to Tom Hatem of Hatem Automotive to display his collection of classic cars each month. And, the Winking Lizard on the northeast corner will be a great place to finish your HOP experience with a dinner on the patio. MARBLE CLIFF
Streetscape improvements are a sign of the times in Marble Cliff Whether you are driving, bicycling or walking in the Village of Marble Cliff, you most likely look to the street signs to help guide your way. Street name signs usually blend into the urban surroundings and for most are not really noticed for much more than defining a street’s location. Recently, the Village changed out their street name signs and made their look more distinctive. The shape of the sign itself was designed to incorporate a distinctive curved top element, as well as the street name now printed in black on a white background. These new elements set the signs apart from neighboring communities. Also added to each sign was the notation “Village of Marble Cliff” so that each Village street sign helped signify the Village specifically. The impetus for the sign changes was twofold. First, federal regulations had been set in motion outlining street sign size, colors, reflectivity and acceptable print style. Originally intended to be a regulatory mandate on municipalities within the next five years, this timeline was recently relaxed

The second and more Village-specific influence for the new look of the street signs was a recommendation in a
Planning Report (December 2013) provided the Village by an Ohio State University City and Regional Planning studio (see story in the Chamber’s Spotlight, Vol. 2, Issue 1) following an extensive study of

a variety of Village features. A recommendation was for the Village to establish its own brand. A number of options were suggested, including one calling for unique streetscape elements. Creating street sig-
nage that included the Village’s name gave the Village a community distinction, as well as a style that presented a “Village feel.” The street signs have been well received by residents and visitors alike. The Village intends to build on this Village style, as it moves forward with a major streetlight renovation project. Starting in 2014, plans are for the Village streetlight system to be upgraded to a consistent lamppost look and consistent lighting. The lamps will be transitioned to LED lighting for a more efficient and effective lighting system. The project will start on 5th Avenue and plans are for the upgrades to be phased in throughout the Village over the next few years. Continuing to enhance the unique community feel of the Village increases its attractiveness for both current and potential residents and businesses. The Village of Marble Cliff intends to study moving forward with other recommendations of the Ohio State Planning Report.

Tour de Grandview stays the course; Twenty-first race slated for June 27 Pro cyclists will once again test their mettle--and their pedals-- hitting the streets of Grandview for the 21st Annual Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic in late June. The longstanding Grandview event marks the first leg of the biggest weekend of professional bicycle racing in the Midwest, as Ohio plays host to three premier professional cycling events in one weekend. Coined a “three-day racing sandwich” by VeloNews, the Tour joins forces with Cincinnati’s Hyde Park Blast and Madeira’s Centennial Criterium for a three-day cycling celebration. Top professionals from the U.S. and around the world will converge on those cities for races Friday June 27, Saturday, June 28 and Sunday,
June 29. The events, also collectively known as the Ohio Triple Weekend, are sanctioned by USA Cycling, and will feature both men and women cyclists in multiple professional categories, as well as top amateur competitors and Juniors. Grandview Heights will close four streets to provide the venue for its Friday night Tour de Grandview; Cincinnati’s Hyde Park neighborhood will host Saturday’s races; and Madeira, Ohio will hold Sunday’s events through its business district. All three events are part of USA Cycling’s Ohio Cup Series. The sharp turns and grueling demands of the Tour de Grandview criterium courses have long made them a favorite among participating

Grandview’s laidback, eclectic culture and the spectator enthusiasm, along with the community’s historic hospitality, have made the Tour de Grandview one of the best in the Midwest for more than twenty years. giveaways, a bike raffle, and a sizeable street party filled with food, drinks, and live entertainment. For the second year, Destination Grandview will present the street party with Craft Beer Sponsor, The Ohio Taproom. Coined the “Pour de GrandBrew,” the party will span Grandview Avenue from First to Second Avenues. Bike shops and other cyclingrelated exhibitors will set up in the exposition area to showing off the latest bikes--one of which will be raffled the night of the race. The race is riding on them The Tour de Grandview is organized by the non-profit Grandview Community Association with the support of the City of Grandview Heights and a host of local volunteers and corporate sponsors. The Grandview Community Association has donated more than $21,000 in Tour de Grandview proceeds to charities in the last seven years alone. Putting on an event of the size and quality of the Tour de Grandview Cycling Classic takes the cooperation and hard work of an entire community. As the Tour is a not-for-profit event, volunteers provide a large chunk of the foundation for this community favorite. Volunteering for the Tour de Grandview offers a unique opportunity to support a beloved community event, meet pro cyclists, and also spotlight your business.
